Frequent cruiser on Star Libra and interested in the new port of call Medan. Disappointing to see the service has deteriorated significantly from previous cruises and the new port of call Medan seem to be poorly planned. The usual good range of food from the restaurants were gone, the service was poor. and the portion served is small. The new port of call Medan is very poorly organised. You have to walk approximately 3 Km from the dock to the arrival hall under the hot sun. This was later remedied by the offer of shuttle bus when they realised that very few passenger took the challenge to walk. The port is hours away from any places of attraction. The gaming room (casino) has been downsized with only few slot machines left which were mainly old and the table games were severely restricted. The opening hours restricted to 2 am closure. With the ship leaving port in the evening the opening time was cut down to 3 hours, hardly worth playing at all. The main reason given was due to lack of staff. The welcoming drinks has been removed and the disembarkation chaotic. Overall a disappointing poor experience. Read Less

If you are planning to go on the cruise with children, let me just stop you now. Your kids and you will have a much better time elsewhere. The childcare centre on the ship charges RM20/hour/child. If you have more than one child, it would be pretty expensive. Other than the childcare centre, the children have the swimming pool to frolick in and some board games they can obtain from the activity centre. Entertainment for the children is quite limited. Some of the shows require a minimal charge. There are other resorts which offer FREE child activities all day long but they are not on a ship of course. The cabin is adequate. Cosy. The bathroom can be quite challenging when you need to shower your children. The cabin itself is clean, cosy and comfortable. Dining was a little nerve wrecking as most of the time we were greeted with "Sorry maam. We are full house already" To top it off, the closing time was not in accordance with the Star Navigator sheet we received daily outside our room. Most of the time we had to drag our 5 kids up and down just for a meal. Apart from 5 kids, we had 1 senior citizen and 6 adults. So we had 12 in a group. Imagine having to go from one restaurant to another. I would think that if you knew you will be having thousand plus passengers, your restaurants should remain open for an additional half hour or one hour. And you should stick to your opening and closing hours as stipulated on the Star Navigator(for those who do not know what this Star Navigator is...it is a sheet of information with all you need to know about the ship and its activities for the day) Please fill up your drinking water during your meal as once the restaurant closes, it is impossible to get drinking water. You might have to resort to the water fountain located at the side of the bar on deck 9. Please be very careful about leaving your valuables in the cabin. This is because front desk actually gave one of our rooms to a new passenger. We would not have known if someone from our group saw this couple opening one of our rooms. And when we brought this matter up with housekeeping, she just giggled and said that front desk heard her wrongly. I didn't think this matter was funny at all. I cannot imagine the number of times when this happened and no one knew about it. So please keep your valuables with you at all times. The scene at the swimming pool is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The children's pool was packed to the brim. Many passengers tried going in without the proper swimming attire. They were of course, asked to change by the "lifeguards" We found out that these supposed "lifeguards" were not trained to be lifeguards. That is why they do not allow children to go into the adults pool. If someone is drowning, they are not qualified to save them. What horror!!!! This information was shared by the lifeguard to us. We were advised to check out the night before so it would be smoother the following day. All went well until we wanted to pay. We were told the signal was weak. So we could not pay. We were told to come back later or pay the following day. You advise your passengers to check out early but cannot obtain good signal for credit card paying? Check out counter was open till 2am. The next morning, we were asked to be out of the cabin by 8.30am. We only disembarked at about 10am. Almost everyone was bleary eyed. When we asked the staff why it was taking so long...her reply was "I also do not know why its taking so long" This was our first experience on a cruise. I would say it was not unpleasant all the way. There is room for improvement. I just hope the management looks into it seriously. I think majority of the staff are from Philippines. They are a few from China who cannot speak English. I think all staff should be trained to handle any passengers questions. And since this is an international ship, your staff should be able to speak simple proper English. Having said all that, this was my family's experience. It could be different with yours. Bon voyage! Good luck! Read Less

Dear Star Cruises, I had wished that you would have showed a little more integrity in your advertising and marketing to your Australian market prior to booking this cruise. Being an experienced cruiser and being it was over the New Years holiday, I had expected much more. Our check-in process was a sorry, disjointed affair requiring us to stand in queue several times with little or no direction from shore staff - a process that took several hours, including an hour for a late arrival of the ship. Due to the poor communication, some couples waited all day to board wasting a day of their vacation. The cabin we had was poorly laid out and in a bit of a sorry state - doors rusting away and falling off the hinges. The state of the boat was generally filthy in the public areas (especially in the pool area), staff just ignored the rubbish and dirty dishes. Dining in the Mariner Buffet was an experience that reminded me of my worst days eating in an Army mess with less selection and quality, eating off of plastic plates and cups. The same song played over and over for days... The other restaurants were better, but never approached the level of standard and service that I have experienced on other cruises. 'Smart casual' was as much as I could bring myself to dress up on the 'Gala Night' many people were comfortable in shorts most nights... The ship's entertainment was sad - the musical entertainment was repetitive and was pulled from some low-end pub Indonesia while the celebrity singers were a couple of has-beens. The magician was first rate mind you. The DJs were underemployed as the same CD played day after day in the pool area. What is probably the most offensive thing is the itinerary and how you have presented it. Nowhere could I find details of the ships arrival and departure times - not on the web, not in the brochures, not in the info from the travel agent. So when we saw we had 'two days' in Phuket on the itinerary we at least expected the better part of a day or overnight to enjoy the island. Every one of the Australia customers had the same experience and felt the same way - duped. One couple even left the ship due to the minimal information given, having made previous plans. Officially we were to have arrived at 5 pm only to leave at 2 am the next day. If you were the first person off and the last person on, you would have only gotten 5 hours on shore. That same couple made the mistake to get back on the boat a couple of days later to attend the 'New Years gala affair'. The last night he ate a bad mussel at dinner, being polite he never spat it out being in mixed company. The next day, I convinced him to at least tell the doctor that he was violently ill with food poisoning (my wife an experienced nurse) even after he was better. His request to see the doctor was rebuked by reception staff as she told him the "you don't have food poisoning, no one else on board has food poisoning... the doctor is unavailable". Are your reception staff health professionals that are qualified to triage medical queries? No, I don't think that I will ever consider another Star Cruise again. Market the trip for what it is... a GAMBLING SHIP. The itinerary is all based around getting the most time out in international waters to maximise revenues. Most Asian clientele loved the cruise, every Australian we talked to hated it. Be honest... I have. Read Less

We had travelled before on Superstar Gemini & Virgo. If you have travelled these two ships DO NOT TRY THIS ONE What a let down. Many Aussies patronize the Superstar Line & because of our previous experiences we were really looking forward to this trip. Ship very old & tired. Buckled decks. Rust in pool. Carpet not flush in common areas. This was a three & four day cruise which we joined together to make 7 days. Boarding...Was like boarding a ferry service. As it turned out that's all this cruise was. Mini Suite Cabin...Broken Drawers & not much wardrobe space. Light in wardrobe never went out. Consequently we had a comfort light coming through the door joints for the whole cruise. Dining Menu was repeated for all meal types. Morning/Afternoon teas were cheap & misely looking. Liquor expensive. A $15.00 Aus bottle of wine cost over $40.00. Alternate dining expensive. Dinner... Dining in the main restaurant was informal. Some passengers dressed up while others were in shorts & sandals. Buffet was abysmal. Hygiene standards were the poorest I have seen in all my years of travel. No facilities to clean hands near this outlet except the toilet. Children coughing into food. A shocker. Entertainment..Same show more than once. Topless cabaret show $40. Chinese acrobats, dancers were excellent. Excursions...Our trips were excellent & reasonably priced. However on one bus there were passengers who had their bags stolen. There was no customer service recovery from the shipping line until complaints were made. Crew...tried very hard & were friendly. Many crew apologized to us when we advised them we had sailed on both Gemini & Virgo. I ordered a bottle of wine to be delivered to our cabin but ended up having the poor cabin attendant in trouble because that was not her job. English was also a problem on many occasions. This was a 5 ports in a 7 days cruise and consequently passengers were changing nearly every day. We were constantly advised that the casino was now opened. This was no Gemini or Virgo cruise and you will never see me on another starship cruise as the cruises ex Australia are now varied with plenty of choice with new ships. Admittedly I was on a two for the price of one promotion. You certainly pay for what you receive. Read Less
