What can i say more than a horrible vacation? The boat was overbooked..too many people everywhere..not one place next to the pool to reserve a chair, noisy boat with under age kids drinking and screaming..we had hate notes left on our door several times..gum on our door handle and the security officer told us that it wasnt their priority to see who might have done that and that camera footage was only made to check for the casino. the food is always the same thing in the buffet and changes slightly in the restaurants..activites and boring the staff was rude and didnt look like they wanted to be there..this is my first time on norwegian and i can promise you its my last!! dont go there if you want a peaceful vacation. i thought by seeing many reviews that this boat was going to be fun but the boat is very old and needs a major update in style. We went on the Dawn last Summer and everything about it was perfect so we decided to do it again. Booked the Gem because we like to leave out of Boston. We booked 11 months in advance and decided to do a mini suite . We stayed in one last year and loved the extra room! Not the case on the Gem! We only saw our room steward in hall 3 times. Customer service rep Manuela de Olivera was incredibly rude and combative!! Good customer service is non existent! Never again! Our suite had some kind of bump out that took up additional space in our room. We couldnt walk by our bed to get into room without going sideways! We also couldn’t stand in front of closet and open doors! My son had a balcony room that Was more spacious ! When we asked the desk why it was considered a mini suite the rep became very combative and rude! She said “You are not getting an upgrade!” We told her we didn’t want to move just wanted it noted that cabin 11016 should not be considered a mini suite! She said it was our fault WE didn’t do our homework! She also kept arguing that all mini suites are the same size. (We later found out that our suite was less square footage than typical mini suites.) The customer service rep Manuela kept saying we were wrong so I asked for a manager. He came out and said all mini suites the same. I asked to please come look at it with me. When he got to our room he said you are right this is smaller, also said many others complained about this suite before. Food was poor to mediocre Loved buffet on the Dawn. The Buffett on the Gem was tasteless and similar to school cafeteria type food. Rooms were not kept as clean, they took my dirty and damp towels and rehung them instead of fresh ones. Room AC never got cold. Staff not very friendly. Empty beer cans and trash on ground around pool , very rusty balcony, Played Deal or No Deal. It cost $25 and only one person goes up to play, It said you have to be 18 plus and the name they called has to be present to play. They called a mans name and he wasn’t there so his 2 kids both under 12 went up with aunt and played. One of the kids actually played as contestant. Biggest prize was $500 and only 1 person won. Lots of underage drinking and lots of teenagers in night clubs. Read Less

We have cruised on Norwegian before and liked the idea of going out of Boston and not dealing with flights. My husband and I, my son, wife and 2 granddaughters, my daughter and her husband went on the cruise. Getting onboard and off went very smoothly. comfortable rooms, great meals, great entertainment and lots for my granddaughters to do. They especially loved the Splash Academy on board!!! They kept asking to go there. The port in Bermuda has lots to see and do and transportation is everywhere. We ordered the premium drink package so we enjoyed many different types of drinks!!! The Stardust Theatre is beautiful and the shows there were wonderful!!!! The band that played by the pool was awesome and everyone was so into the music!!!! I think they should have played longer though! My daughter, daughter-in-law and I all went to the Spa and got massages!!! They had a great deal for a twilight massage!!! Read Less

This is my 5th cruise with Norwegian. We usually take the cruises out of Miami which the ships are a lot bigger and offer more things to do.but decided to go out of Boston because it was an hour away drive.Although it cost twice as much to go on this cruise compared to cruises in Miami where there bigger and newer. If this is your first cruise i guess you would enjoy it but being my 5th cruise the food was awful. The bathrooms were dirty the paper towels were overflowing in the trash. There was no soap to wash your hands in the bathrooms and you were lucky if you found a bathroom door that locked.Dirty dishes left all around the ship for days. No one ever picked them up! We got one towel animal the first night and that was it. My daughter always looked forward to them.FYI - For teenagers there really wasn't much to do very boring.I guess the ship had a plumbing issue because it smelled like sewage though out the whole ship.FYI if you pay for the medical insurance you still have to pay on the ship to see a Doctor.$150 just to look at you so its a waste of money for the insurance and the Doctor on this ship was very rude and i wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't a physician at all. Definitively wouldn"t ever go on this ship again!!.Well I think it's time to try Royal Caribbean. Read Less

We chose the Norweigan ship from Boston to Bermuda. Getting on the ship took 40 min to check in because the desk has to check on our green card status. Our state room with a balcony was nice but for 7 days we never recieved fresh sheets and were asked to hang and reuse bathroom towels. If we wanted water in our room we had to pay $5.59. Our room steward took 3 days before he finally met us. The announcment speaker was broken. Steele cabin doors slammed all hours of the day and night. The worst was the food. On the Gem it was horrible!!! Except the pool side bbq. The food tasted frozen and packaged then warmed up. Anything under a heat lamp was dried out. We ate fruit for days. Entertainment was boring. Stacks of Lounge chairs outside were ratchet strapped together but never put out for the number of passengers to use. Rock climbing wall was closed. Never again! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had heard positive things. Very disappointed, we took this cruise for out fortieth wedding anniversary. Cold food was served starting the first night and every meal after that except at O’Sheehans. The specialty restaurants weren’t any better than the rest of the dining. We paid all of our fees before we took the cruise and were still charged $30.00 every day. I will not take another Norwegian cruise line cruise. We were charged to play some of the games and the biggest prize that an audience member won during Deal or no Deal was $50.00. The cards cost $25.00 per card. I really was disappointed because you hear so much about how good the food is and you look forward to this. It certainly did not even come close to what I have read. The shows were good. I will give the, that. I enjoyed all the shows that I attended. Read Less

My significant other and I just returned from the Boston to Bermuda cruise (5/3-5/10). We were on a Royal Caribbean cruise in December which we enjoyed very much but unfortunately we were very disappointed in the cruise on the Gem for several reasons. I purposely took notes so that I could let the customer relations department know about my first Norwegian experience. I do not believe you can fix something if you are unaware the problem exists. • 5/4 during our first experience at the pool below the upper bar, it was a windy day and the trash from above was blowing down into the pool area (cigarette boxes, cups, wrappers). It would be one thing if someone was cleaning this up and on top of it but the trash sat there and accumulated the entire time we were at the pool. There were plenty of people standing at a table pushing spa products but nobody to pick up or sweep the area. • We had a couples pedicure scheduled for the morning at 9:00am that we scheduled during our tour of the spa. Not one person mentioned to us there is a time difference and that we should adjust our phones accordingly. Although it may have been written someplace it was the next morning and we had no idea. The spa called us three or four times and we answered the phone but nobody said anything. We learned 10 minutes later the cord on the phone was broken and unless you held it a certain way the person on the other end could not hear you speaking. They told us that they could fit us in if we hurried. • 5/5 mid-morning/afternoon we were at the Garden Café and there was a loud banging coming from what I thought was the other side of the bar area so I ran around to see what the loud noise was and the gentleman at the counter informed me they were working in the room behind the bar. Right after that there was loud grinding noise on top of the banging that continued for at least 20 minutes to a half hour or more. • 5/6 approximately 7am we were awoken by loud clanging noise that continued until 9am. When we complained they mentioned something about the life boats but this was still unacceptable at these hours or at all during the cruise. • 5/6 the main pool bar had approximately 20-25 people waiting with one bartender on. • Our friend fell getting off the boat to go to town, when she came back on the boat immediately after falling to get Band-Aids for her road rash knees they told her the doctor would not be available until 5pm. She went to get band aids at the front desk and they told her she could purchase them. • 5/8 it was a beautiful day and everyone was at the pool. Unfortunately both pools were drained and closed. There were men in white coveralls in the pool doing some sort of maintenance for most of the day. At some point they put on masks and were applying some sort of toxic chemical that they were wearing masks to put on. The concerning thing for every guest aside from the inconvenience of the pool being closed was now this incredibly strong chemical smell wafting up into the area where all the guest were sitting without masks. Not only is this a health hazard but just a mindless act that I am shocked Norwegian corporate signed off on. • There were parts of the boat that were roped off and being painted while the cruise hardly half way through. This was not due to the wind that was an entirely different thing and I completely understand the decks being closed off for high wind. • During Bingo the final day there was a 10 minutes hard sell for re-cruising if you book now you can get all of these discounts, which honestly in my opinion was too much considering there was construction on the boat the majority of the time we were cruising. • The final day we headed back to the garden café to get a drink and again there was a group of men in white coveralls painting the stairs white. In summary, I am truly disappointed with the lack of staffing, the lack of professionalism, the nickel and diming for everything. Since when does a premium drink package not include water, soda or coffee? I walked up to more than two bars where the bartenders were either arguing with each other or ignoring the customers. I think it was the first day we sat at O’Sheehans to eat and they said we could eat at the bar but we had to walk over to the hostess stand and get menus. I then pointed out there was a menu right behind the gentleman who said this. I don’t mind walking over to the hostess stand I understand that is the policy when you are trying to be seated in the dining area. This was day one and the lack of interest in the guests or to make us feel welcome should have been a red flag because it was consistent throughout the entire cruise. It is not for us to know that the waiters shouldn’t come behind the bar because the bartender kept yelling at them. I am have been in the hospitality industry my entire work life and know exactly what needs to be done to make someone feel welcome and appreciated. If this was the representation of Norwegian that this company has put forth to keep people cruising on their boats then I can say without a doubt we will be pursuing our next vacation with a different cruise line. The biggest disappointment for me is that I have heard so many great things about Norwegian and was really looking forward to a great vacation. Read Less

This was my 27th cruise with NCL since 2004. They have progressively gotten worse since that time. Specifically the food, service, and loyalty to their returning customers. Lobster use to be available in the main dining room and specialty restaurants. Not anymore! The desserts used to be something to look forward to. Not anymore! The desserts are made for the masses now. You know every day in the buffet there will be some flavored sheet cake moose/gelatin cut into rectangles with a piece of chocolate stuck into it to look fancy! So disappointing! The service is much different now. We used to feel special. Now we are just another number. You would assume being a “platinum plus” member NCL would elevate you to a higher level. NOPE! NCL keeps taking away and taking away to make their numbers work at the expense of their customers and with a smile on their faces! So disappointing! So this cruise the jacuzzis didn’t open until 8am! WHAT!!! On past cruises I looked forward to watch sunrises from the jacuzzi. Now NCL has ruined that!!! So disappointing!!! NCL should be ashamed! Where should I start on that. I'm normally not someone who easily complaints about issues and who is willing to overlook things but this cruise was the worst cruise I have ever done. I mean we spend over $10K just for the cruise which was nothing what came close to what NCL is promising in their advertisements. But from the Beginning: Embarkation: We had chosen (My parents, my Fiance and my two boys) that we will take the 10am time slot as the ship were supposed to leave at 4pm and the Intrepid Museum is next door of the cruise terminal. Then we arrived there was already a huge line in front of the security control and announcements were made that the computer system isn't working and they will open the check in soon (I don't want to even know how people felt who had the 8am check in time). After about 15min wait the line actually started to move and we were all still in a good mood. Check in was quite easy and it didn't was anything different from any other American Cruise line we have sailed on (the European ones are much better organized and faster (AIDA, TuiCruises)). We were told not to leave the waiting area as boarding would start at 12pm anyways which we didn't really like as we wanted to go to the Museum with our boys but which we accepted. So at around 11.45 we found a seat and started to wait. Till 1pm nothing happened until an NCL crew member made the announcement that the ship has arrived late and they have to go through the procedure with the Port Authority which will take till 2.30pm. Uff. I mean our boys are easy to entertain but 2 1/2 hours in a waiting hall where nothing was is quite interesting. In between where were more announcements made that maybe it will be a little bit earlier and they will try everything to get us on board as soon as possible. At 2.30pm the next announcement was made that they will start any minute with the boarding. We had to wait till nearly 4pm to finally get on board of the ship (just a reminder 6 hours from arrival with two little boys (5 and 8)). Cabin: Okay at least we were on board now and could start enjoying our vacation. As we arrived in our cabin it was obvious that it wasn't really cleaned. We found the trash and the room card from the ones who were traveling in that cabin the cruise before. The mirrors had finger prints (and then I say fingerprint I mean dirt) and the tables were all sticky. I have slept in hotels in China which were below the 1 star rating and I didn't had any issues. But I knew what I paid for and what I had to expect. This stateroom wasn't anything near what I would expect for that amount of money spend. The good thing about the room was that the toilet was separate from the shower and the sink in its little own "room". Dining/Food/Crew: Exhausted from this start we just wanted to have some dinner so we thought it would be a good idea to go to the dinner restaurant so that we don't have to get our food from the buffet. We didn't have to wait at all to get seated and were really surprised that we had a table that fast. The waiter greeted us and asked what we would like to drink. As we had the Ultimate Beverage Package (includes Alcohol and sodas/juices and so on, but don't include coffee or sparkling water (to get that you have to buy another package for an additional $39 per day(!)). So we asked for a few sodas and apple juice for the boys. This was the first time we got eyed rolled on us (and not the last time). It took just 15-20 minutes to get our drinks, which means our waiter wasn't seen for the same amount of time. Her back we started with ordering food and I did the mistake and asked for a 2nd starter which made me earn the next comment in Chinese and rolled eyes. By the time then the starters arrived (another 15 minutes later) we had drunk our sodas and juices but our waiter ignored that we had either water nor any thing else left in our glasses and just didn't asked if we would like to have anything. So I asked if we could get refills and earned the next pair of rolled eyes and rudeness. I think I have never been treated like that before. Unfortunately this attitude stayed the same the whole cruise with one exception. After we had complaint to the customer service the next evening dinning we had the restaurant manager and his staff at our table every 5 minutes so that it didn’t feel genuine as more as a thing they had to do. I didn't feel any better with that and honestly the interaction with our kids was quite creepy. Overall the service was very slow (one exception was the Moderno were the bar is right around the corner), inattentive and most of the times not friendly at all. They gave us the feeling we were just a burden and they have to do their job. By the way, I haven’t seen the Captain or his first officer or the hotel manager or the entertainment manager once during the whole cruise. This is not really a good thing. On top of that the food was nothing close to anything we had on different other cruise ships. I mean I can taste the difference between fresh mashed potatoes and instant ones. These were definitely not fresh ones. And when you bite on clumps of instant powder in a soup then you know that this one isn't made fresh either. The breakfast buffet didn't have had any variation (the same cheese every day, two types of ham, no honey, the same baked beans, the same pancakes, waffles and so on). I mean no variation at all. It was quite similar with the lunch and the dinner buffet but not as bad as the breakfast. This food was hardly enjoyable and had nothing from premium concept NCL is advertising. Entertainment: If you have kids stay away from the Norwegian Gem. There was nearly nothing to do for kids and we got most of the times the feeling they are just annoying and in the wrong place. I never had that my kids were treated with such a small amount of attention. Yes there were two exceptions who were awesome and super nice but unfortunately it were only two crew members. Other than that the entertainment was okay but nothing really exciting nor was it so much that we couldn’t decide. Money: Money is a big thing for Norwegian because as soon as you enter the ship it feels like they want to rip you off. I mean the Arcades for the kids were $1 (!!!) per minute. Yes you could buy a game pass for unlimited games for $175 for the cruise per kid (!). Before nearly every show they tried to sell their "awesome" offer to buy the next cruise and make the down payment and you get up to $500 on board credit for “free” (if you made a down payment for $1,000 at the same time). The photographer were rude and very pushy and in general we got the feeling they had to reach a certain amount of sales. During our specialty dinners the photographer pushed us to make a photo with him just to show us the result at the end of our dinner where we just wanted to enjoy our desert. The price tag for that picture was a cheap $25 for one (!) picture which wasn’t even really good. And then you say friendly “no thank you” you get either “Why? Isn’t it a good picture?” or “Are you really sure?” or they rip the photo out of your hand and just leave without any comment. As written before, having certain packages doesn't mean it is for free as they try to get still things paid on top. For example we had the dinning package (4 times special dinning for the 1st and 2nd person in our cabin but due to corporate policy (which is not written or shown on the website) we weren’t allowed to share this dinning package with our children who were cruising in the same cabin. There wasn’t even the possibility to buy these packages for the 3rd and 4th person cruising in the same stateroom. It wasn’t like I wanted to give it to another person on the ship to invite them. It was for our own children in the same stateroom. The restaurant manager just answered to our complaint that this is normal and they have the same complaints at least a few times per cruise. Why doesn’t NCL change it if this is such a big complaint or at least mention it on their website or somewhere. Ports/ Excursions: When we booked our cruise we had Saint Kitts in our itinerary but do to schedule issues NCL changed the itinerary to St. Marteen/St. Martin which was fine with me as I always wanted to see the famous beach where the planes land just a couple of feet above your head. But in general the planning of NCL for their ports is horrible. I mean then they say you will be at 4pm in the Port they are either early or late. I never have made such experiences with any other cruise line. I mean being early by half an hour or having some issues with clearing the boat so that it is a little bit later (half an hour) but most of the ports I have visited with other cruise lines were on time. Not with NCL. One port we arrived like 4 hours early another port late and none of the ports on time. I mean I stopped to look in to the cruise journal as it didn’t matter at all what was written for the arrival time. It wouldn’t work anyways so it was easier just to accept that we will be there then we are there. And it isn’t such a big issue as we still had our fun on the different islands but what was really annoying that NCL canceled our last port because of a “storm” on our route and they want to make up the time they will lose in the storm so that we can be “safer”. Sounds at the beginning right and good that the company is taking that good care of us. But then you find out that you are back in the NY port by 3am docked while it was planned to dock at 10am and you miss going by the Statue of Liberty in daylight which was one of the main reasons why we booked this cruise when you get the first questions. When you then hear that this was the last cruise on this route and the ship goes without passengers to Boston afterwards then this is getting even more irritating. Especially then I let you know how the disembarkation worked. Disembarkation: Two days before the arrival you had the choice to get tags for your suitcases for either going from board with your luggage or at a certain time. We decided to take the latest possible time which was 12pm for going of board. The evening before we arrived we got the information from our steward that we have to leave the cabin no later than 8am. Okay, but we thought okay we will find a place in the restaurant or on deck. No big issue. Next morning we got ready so that we could leave the cabin by 8am as we were told to do so. At 7.30am the first announcement came that now all individuals with luggage can leave the boat. We thought wow they are starting early with disembarkation especially as we were not planned to be back in port before 10am. But we didn’t thought anything bad and went for breakfast. At 8.30 they called the first passengers with luggage tags and only 15 minutes the next group. Our group was called at 9am. Again we were supposed to be not from board before 12pm and made our travel arrangements accordingly. So we thought okay it is just a nice information that our luggage is now available. And again we were so wrong. At 9.15am they called again all groups and at 9.30am they made the last call for all passengers. 9.30am (!). Half an hour before we were even supposed to arrive back in New York. So we made our way to the check out where the next surprise was waiting for us. While everyone out of my family was allowed to leave the ship I was quite rude informed that I have to go back to the customer service because there is an account issue. Not that we were waiting already in line for getting off board for 20 minutes and not that this was the time to inform passengers about another corporate policy no you wait till check out and then you have one of your big security guards moving you out of the line. As I got to know afterwards the security was even more rude to my children and my family as the wanted to either go with me or at least wait for me as they didn’t know anything of what was going on. Nevertheless, I went back to the customer service where the customer manager informed me that I have some board credit left on my account. When I asked him what the problem is as they have my Credit Card on file where they could have easily booked the money to I just got the answer it is corporate policy to pay it out cash. I never had any issues with board credit not being able to get it back in my account but it seems like all what NCL can do is charging. So all of this trouble only for paying my board credit in cash and this as rude as possible. Fun fact about safety with NCL: We had to use an escalator for going down to our luggage. When my son (5 years) stepped onto the escalator I wanted to follow immediately as how it is done by good parents not expecting what would come next. Instead of making my way on the escalator I got stopped very rudely from another NCL employee with a stick until my son was already a few steps down. Then the stick was lifted and I was allowed to enter the escalator. The same with the rest of my family and other passengers behind us. As I wanted to get to my son as he has sometimes trouble to get of the escalator I moved forward which earned me a again a very rude: “Sir, don’t move on the escalator”. Just in case you don’t know how to use the escalator just ask NCL. They will tell you! In general the employees at the check out and in the terminal were very rude. Waiting for family members where answered with: “SIR, KEEP moving!”. I mean we were within the last passengers going of the boat so that there not really more masses on people to expect but yeah the nearly empty arrival hall was still to small to make it possible for me to wait for my children and my family. Overall Yeah, I think you know my conclusion and what I want to say. But another fun fact before I come to the conclusion everyone is expecting. It was a lucky coincident that my son was chosen to draw the lucky winner of a future cruise with NCL and he drew the couple sitting next to us. After the draw then a person from NCL had explained everything to the couple I asked them if I could get to know what kind of cruise it is. They answered that it is a 5 day Caribbean cruise but that all the taxes, port fees, gratuities and so on aren’t included in the “free” cruise. Just to let you know if you get a “free” cruise from NCL be careful, it might not be for free. Okay but now to my conclusion. If you are a foody or you are travelling with your family or your taste buds are still working in a good way or you like to relax and have a friendly atmosphere, then run and don’t book with NCL. If you don’t know what to do with your money, and you like instant and frozen food, and you want to get bothered by employees trying to sell you what you have already bought then NCL is the right cruise line for you. For me I can say that I will NEVER ever cruise with NCL again because if I would have the feeling it was just this ship then I would be like “meah” lets try another ship but this experience has shown pretty much that this is a corporate issue and not a ship or crew issue. I have gone on more than 10 cruises and first and last NCL cruise. Cabin was old and worn. Shower door broken. Bathroom door broken. A/C made terrible noise. Ship cannot comfortably accommodate number of passengers on a sold out cruise especially in inclement weather. They are short on staff and the attitude of the staff was the worst I have ever seen. You can seriously get better service at a fast food restaurant. Specialty restaurants are a joke. Same type of food and service just a different setting. Pool deck vastly overcrowded and on a 10 day cruise the 2 pools were only open once at the same time. For certain types of liquor you had to go to more than one bar to find it. Overall Royal Caribbean, Princess or Celebrity are better by far at the same price point. Read Less

My husband and I area living in New York, then we decided to take this ship + Caribbean route. We are in mid-40-50 and most of the cruisers were much older, few youngers. Embarkation & Desembarkation (New York port): We have been cruising with other cruise lines (Royal, Celebrity and Carnival. First with NCL and probable the last. The embarkation and disembarkation are very disorganized. DINING We had one night at ‘Moderno’ Restaurant (Brazilian steakhouse), that was very disappointing. First, we are Brazilians and the way they serve the food is not the same. Rice and beans are served together in Brazil. At Moderno, rice was on the buffet and beans are served as a side dish, later. The meat was very spicy and salty. The service was very slow also. It was my birthday dinner ... The waitresses sang a ‘Happy Birthday’ and gave me a very hard and old cake, as a gift. I tried to eat but I just couldn’t. We went twice to ‘Garden Café’, complementary, we felt very chaotic and the food was not good, not healthy at all. To get a table, we were having breakfast before 7:00am and lunch before noon. The rest of the days and nights we had dinner and lunch at the ‘Grand Pacific’, which the food was OK, nothing special, the lunch menu was the same every day, the dinner had a daily variation with few options. DAYS AT THE SEA We felt bored with few options of entertainment. Sales onboard were range for cheap stuff (in quality) to expensive jewelry/watches. Very few options to buy as a souvenir. EXCURSIONS: • Most of the NCL shore Excursions which include a beach do not mention the name of the beach. Pay attention!!! Puerto Rico: We docked at 4:00pm in San Juan and decided to walk around the Old San Juan, El Morro and churches. We had few time at El Morro before closing. The weather was very windy and started raining. Were Back to the ship at 6:00pm. Supposed to left at 10:00pm, but We left only at 11:00pm due to a late excursion. We book shore excursions for all the other Ports through NCL. Philipsburg, St Maarten, St Martin: We had a city tour on both sides of the island (Dutch and French) + 1 hour at the beach (Dutch side). The island still has a lot of destruction from previous hurricanes, If you don’t like to see it, go straight to the beach. This trip was booked on September/2018 for March sailing. St Kitts was scheduled for the second Port, but all the sudden NCL changed for St Maarten with no announcement. St Lucia, Castries – It was a lovely day with a city tour to the Pitons, Prayer Garden and volcano. Antigua, St John – We choose the ‘Hop on Hop Off’ catamaran com option to visit 2 beaches. (90 minutes per beach) Dickenson Bay beach (beer $10) and Runaway beach. Be careful on Runaway beach Restaurant, we ordered beers (we get it) + fish burger (which we never get it). We had only 1 hour at that beach and they had all excuses (a lot of orders, we are doing our best, etc. We had to take a taxi on order to be on time for ship time, the catamaran was overboard taking people from Dickenson beach and left us at Runway beach. Not only our group (8), but more than 50 people from other cruise ship/excursions. St Thomas, US Virgin Islands – we spend 2 hours at Maegan’s Beach. Lovely beach. Previouly, we are supposed to arrived at 8:00am and leave St Thomas only at 5:00pm. Again, NCL changed with no announcement and we left St Thomas at 1:00pm. Will I cruise again? Yes, but with other cruise Companies, NCL never again. After bad reviews about WIFI onboard, we decided not go for a 39.99 per day. We also had a big issue, that was resolved only after 5 days of disembarkation. We always book our cruises through a Travel Agent, always receive a credit onboard. NCL not only denied our credit during our trip but also my Travel Agent had to fight with them for many days and finally they admitted their mistake. I complained on board (NCL customer service) 3 times, even call my Agent. What a stress! Be careful! Another annoying part from NCL are the pre-payment that are placed few days before the end of the cruise on your credit card, that only disappear 4 days after the end of cruise. Not mention, the full invoice already charged on your credit card on the last day. Good point: the size of our balcony + bed was good + size of the bathroom shower. Read Less

My wife and I have been on several cruises before but this was our first and last cruise with Norwegian Cruise Lines. Their lack of communication and unwillingness to take any responsibility for anything is astounding. Our departure was delayed by one day because of bad weather which we understand. However, we do not understand why Norwegian did not communicate that to us. Instead our Norwegian shuttle picked us up at the airport and drove us to the pier where the dock hand informed us that our ship would not be arriving until the next day. Our shuttle driver unloaded our luggage and told us we would have to find ourselves a hotel for the night. There we were wondering the unfamiliar streets of New York City looking for a hotel that had room along with the other 2000 guests of the ship that were in the same predicament. The next morning at embarkation they handed us a sheet of paper telling us that because of the delay in departure they had cancelled 2 of our scheduled ports with no reason given and that they would be refunding us for 1 day of our cruise. It is now more than a month since the cruise ended and we are still fighting for our 1 day refund and they will not even reply to my emails. It was not the cruise itself that we have a problem with it is Norwegian's complete lack of customer service that we find unacceptable. Read Less

We are not first time cruisers, but this was our first (and last) cruise with Norwegian. We chose this cruise because of its date and itinerary. We hadnt heard anything bad about Norwegian so we figured we'd give them a try. A series of unfortunate events turned our 11 day cruise into a 10 day cruise. We understood the weather is something no one can control so that is not Norwegians fault. However the day before our departure day and even departure sail we recieved about a dozen notifications that the ship would be departing 2 hours late. (Bad weather had delayed its return to New York) Because of the weather our plane was delayed. We were worried we'd miss the departure but fortunately we landed and met uo with our Norwegian tranfer rep. She got us on our shuttle reassuring us we'd made it in time. Got to the peir.... no ship! Now informed the ship was not able to safely dock. Its about 2pm. (This cruise leaves earlier in the day to travel as far as we were to go) With no help from Norwegian we are dropped off to find a place to stay overnight. We had never been to New York before so we took a bit of time to find a hotel that was a reasonable price and distance to the peir. This extra night in New York was not cheap. We had burgers for dinner at a chain restaurant with a pop each (just my husband and I) and that came to about $80. Plus the $300 for a hotel room, breakfast not included there so another meal about $50 more. The whole time we were trying to keep our spirits up. Also the rumour from the other guests was Norwegian would help with the costs. Finally at 4pm we got the first text message that the cruise would not be sailing this day. (Of course we already know a couple hours before) How can they send us so many notices for a 2 hour delay but then nothing on the sail date. They knew for at least 2 hours before sending any notices. We boarded the next day to only discover that our 11 day 6 port cruise would now be a 10 day 4 port cruise. No explanation from anyone as to why we had lost 1 day but 2 ports. Still kept spirits up. Disappointed of course. We found the service was just ok. As was the food. My husband and I both work in customer service and it drove us both crazy to see how it seemed like the staff didnt really care to be there. No one looked happy really. Smile while beside a guest, look unhappy away from guests. I dont expect people to be jolly all the time but they just looked like they were going through the paces. No one did anything extra for a guest. We saw a few times where someone was waiting for service or a table and the staff would see them too. No acknowledgment was made and even saw a table get up and leave. Towards the end of the cruise my husband and I went to ask about getting money back for our missed day and for any help for expenses. They told us that we would have to submit for expenses and to watch the website and our Visa for the days refund. A week after returning home we finally saw our days refund. We got a whopping $149. We were happy to see we did get our shuttle fare back, since we had to get our own transportation to the ship. (The second try!) A few days later we heard that Norwegian will not be helping in anyway towards expenses in new york. My husband had taken the number of days of the cruise and divded it by the cruise total. Came to $300, not $149. Theres never been anything on their website or any emails. Nothing in our Norwegian account. No communication. The deals they were offering to try to get cruises to return were fantastic but the lack of service and the no communication we've had with Norwegian has left us realizing we will never cruise Norwegian again. We are escalating our complaints with Norwegian. Hopefully we at least get a full day refunded. Read Less

I choose this cruise because a friend won the trip. We were treated well because we were Casino cruisers, so our embarkment was quick and painless! We ate when we got on the ship at OSheehan's and the food was not very good. The portions for the appetizers were small and although we could have ordered more they were not good enough to want to. I understand about why there are not straws, but it is hard to drink frozen drinks without a straw-there has to be a way around this. I was very disappointed on the overall trip and I would never travel on this line again especially at this time of year. I was surprised at the lack of pride many of the workers had for their jobs except for the bar staff, room staff and entertainment. The wait staff was less than efficient, most of the time the wait for food and drinks was poor. One night I did not get my glass of wine I ordered at the start of my meal until my dessert came. I was pleased that you could order 2 drinks at a time which came in handy since the staff was not good at coming to you. I felt the food was the same at the buffet each day- little variety, in the dining rooms it was almost the same each night. I had pork one night and it was tough, and a steak another that was less than tender. I had a couple pasta meals with seafood that were good- On Carnival we had lobster one night- Hmm did I miss that night on the Gem- nope was not offered. I was unimpressed with the taste and variety. Excursions? I missed a whole island with no compensation, Our excursion in Florida was cancelled, and Nassau was fine. super disappointing! The shows were impressive- the bands were fantastic and the dancers in Blazin Boots and the show the last night were superb.supurb I would most likely go back to Carnival even if they charged more for the same cruise, because the staff seems to really like their jobs-they have entertainment at meals and the staff was great with the children. I did not feel any connection with any of the servers except for at the bars. Read Less

This cruise was so terrible that we canceled our previously booked March 29th, 2019 cruise on this ship. We have sailed NCL 13 times and on the GEM two other times. The food was cold, unappealing and no variety. Except for the Duchess Of Soul the entertainment was not worth seeing. The ship was disorganized with long waits on and off the ship. I am so disappointed in NCL. The activities during the day that were free were very limited. I tried talking to the cruise director but she was rude, aloof and unaprochable. The cabin stewards were excellent as our cabin was always immaculate For first time cruisers this cruse would be fine..They do not know the difference. We have sailed on over 60 cruises. We are non complainers and go with the flow. Sometimes I read reviews and feel that passengers just look at one or two minor details to focus on and complain However I need to voice my complaints on this cruise. There were numerous issues. It was bad!!!Everyone on the ship was complaining. Hopefully they will put their complaints in writing. Read Less

Your drink packages was ridiculous, the only thing I enjoyed was the Stardust entertainment. The spa was nice, I enjoyed the massage. I do not plan on another cruise. Its not for me. Each embankment was breathtaking, but we were not there long enough to enjoy it. The excursions were too expensive.i did not like the cruise I will not be going again. The cabin was ok, but for what I paid I expected a little more of a first time experience, I was not wowed, the ship was beautiful inside and out, but it's not what I expected it to be. I was disappointed. With the reviews I read, and the star ratings I saw, I was disappointed Read Less

Chose this cruise fo spend the Thanksgiving holiday in the Caribbean with family. Upon embarkation, I commented to the representative that I should have filled out the health questionaire online, she promptly told me "Madam, they don't have pens online". She then told me that she needed my home home number, not my cell phone number, I said I thought that is what I already gave, she then told me not to interrupt her, since she was so rude, I changed to another representative, good start. When I booked, I was given three free offers, I chose a drink package and two specialty dinner packages and was told I could use one of the specialty dinner packages for my family that was traveling with me (two people). When we went to the first specialty resaurant I was charged $59.88, I was told by the assistant Maitre D' at Moderno Restaurant to sign for the check and the amount would be credited as soon as my extra specialty dining packge was verified, After I did sign, I was told I wouldn't be credited because my dining package was not transferrable. Salad bar was great at the Moderno Restaurant but the food itself was horrible. I was looking forward to showing my grandaughter the monkies when we docked in St Kitts, only to find out that there wasn't room for our ship at the regular dock, so we docked at the container port, not happy! On top of all these issues, the food was the worst I've ever had on any cruise, I've always enjoyed the food on all of the many cruises that I have previously taken. Very disapointed in NCL and the Gem!! Read Less

This is my 15th cruise, spread over 5 cruise lines. My third NCL and most likely my last NCL. Where to start.... It’s no secret that NCL nickels and dimes you to no end, however they have reached new lows. I understand that it’s a business that needs to make a profit but NCL needs to learn that they must provide a service, and in this business a good service to compete. Most people have the beverage package, which NCL charges a 20% gratuity. Well, trying to find someone to serve you on this ship is near impossible and when you do, they’re expecting cash tips from you. On Other cruise lines I have actually been annoyed at how many servers asked me if I needed anything to drink, well I miss that service ! I don’t really blame the workers as most of them are working as hard as they can, it’s just that bars and restaurants are severely understaffed. Dinner in the complimentary dining rooms is not very impressive food and not very impressive service. So, you pay a fee and go to the a la carte restaurant. Well, the food is much better however, the service is ridiculously slow. Waiters are literally running trying to cover their tables and often forget you. And then when they see you’re unhappy ( in my case waiting an hour for my medium cooked steak that finally arrived near raw) they become nervous that perhaps you will complain to their supervisors.... just making things worse. Pools ( when actually open) are dirty .... one example is my wife and I sat on the sun deck and people beside us spilled their drink and some food.... well that food stayed there for 2 days before being cleaned up..... never saw that on other cruises. Garbage and recycling bins around the bar area drip all over the deck being over filled and never emptied with half finished drinks etc. I can go on and on, but the fact is, it will take a super cheap price to get me to even consider doing another NCL again.... I work too hard for my money and knowing how other cruise lines take care of their customers for the same money.... it’s no contest. Read Less

Let's just start off by saying that the customer service was awful. No one offered to assist in any way for anything, snapped my sail pass card out of my hand several times, never greeted you in passing, and the lines to even get a drink at any of the bars was too long to even bother - no waiters going around either. The food.. awful. Cafeteria food unless you go to the Specialty Dining - which is an extra cost. We did not have the drink package but each time we purchased a drink it was wrong on our account - as in, if it was a 'drink of the day' it should have been $8.95 and it would show up on the account as $14.71. I spent a lot of time at the guest service desk each day to rectify my account - great way to relax. Activities... if you don't play BINGO or Gamble, then just don't even bother. I never thought a cruise could be so disappointing - I felt nickeled and dimed the entire time. Just DON'T.. Norwegian is terrible. Read Less

When I made the reservation for my friend and I and our husbands, I mentioned to NCL agent that we are celebrating my 44 year anniversary. Big year right? Who can say that these days! The agent told me they will send us a cake with a card to celebrate our special occasion..We were left empty!! Our mattress was so uncomfortable that my husband and I received back pain. One week later, we are still experiencing pain..... We tried the food at different restaurants and everything we were served was very cold. Also, the menu was same every night. Overall quality of the food within the Buffet was unacceptable. The ship had over 2000 passengers and all of us could not be accommodated in the dining halls. There were not enough tables to sit and this left us all wandering around to find a table to sit. It was a very uncomfortable experience for all of us. All PA announcements were not clear and we could not understand the anything said. This is worrying in times of emergency. WIFI was part of my package at the time of reservation and I was not able to use it. I personally went to the front desk asking for help but no one knew how to do it. Let’s just say I’m a veteran. I’ve been on 20 cruises in my life and overall this was the worst experience I’ve had to date. Both my husband and I along with our friends were disappointed in taking Norwegian. I chose this cruise to celebrate an important anniversary and it did not meet any of our expectations. I will not recommend this to anyone especially those who want to celebrate an important occasion. Read Less

This ship went to the towns that I wanted to visit and ended up in Quebec City, Canada, which was important to me. The rooms were itty-bitty. The bath had doors to toilet, etc. but no more than 1/2 of a person could fit in there at a time and I am not a large person. I could only raise my arms to shampoo my hair if I turned on a diagonal. The food was terrible and served over and over. There wasn't a truly good meal the entire trip except maybe the prime rib on the last night. That too was thin and covered with an indescribable sauce. A few dishes of fish were ok, no shellfish except tiny, cut in half shrimp. The steak was terrible. Everything was overcooked and then covered with unrecognizable sauce. They had several days at the buffet with very strong Indian food that I could not eat, so it was back to salads and eggs. The tours were abominable based on what people said and I had read that earlier in the reviews. Most towns were easily walked in about an hour so tours were mostly unnecessary. I did take a Hop On-Hop Off Bus in Boston and asked why they were charging $69 for one person when I remember it being much cheaper last time I was in Boston, or any other city for that matter. The staff at the kiosk said it was because NCL owned the buses. At the very least, they had a connection. Never mention that you are on the NCL! The staff was remarkable but usually unhappy, we saw some cry while working. Entertainment was 2 days of real entertainment. There was a juggler/comic who couldn't. In the bars there was a piano player who was wonderful but they made him sing, which was awful. Being tone deaf would help the audience immensely. I have been on Holland America, Princess, and even Carnival (although I wouldn't recommend them either) I have loved the first two. I heard so many people complain, almost everyone I met. Also directions to exit were barely posted, not even the floor number so we had to ask other guests or follow any line we saw. Speakers didn't usually work in our room. Directions for the next day weren't even printed. Plus events were canceled so eventually we stopped going. Never again on NCL!!! Read Less

My review is based on past NCL experiences as we are Gold members on NCL, have sailed on Royal Carib, Princess & Celebrity, most of our cruising has been on NCL, as we liked the food, freestyle and restaurants. The cabin, room steward and some of the food/bar servers were exceptional and I feel sorry that they are subjected to management policies that have impacted NCL experience. The food has gone terribly downhill, I had to return my meal in the French restaurant as I could not even cut the veal with a knife it was that tough. Always loved Cagneys, but that has also suffered from management trying to cut expenses. The potatoes au gratin were like tasteless cardboard, could not eat those. Sauces served with meat were tasteless. The buffet is SO unappealing to even look at no less eat there, dried out burgers sitting out for hours, what used to be lox and capers is now a dollop of pink cream cheese with one caper on top of it. In the main dining room, again rationing capers 4 at most. French onion soup in main dining room has no cheese on it at all, instead they told us the cheese is baked into the crouton floating in the soup, just terrible did not even eat that. Top it off with how can you make a dessert look and taste unappealing, NCL can do it. Tender wait to private island was too long and crew staff loudly arguing among themselves in the main dining room and the tender to private island, very uncomfortable. NCL pool area has always been tacky looking and I did not go into their pool. Some cruisers at the pool very downright rude and absent any manners. Cruise director was just okay.. everything was extremely ear blasting loud from pool activities, bands to shows, the book I was reading was vibrating it was that loud....Gym is nice. Hoping NCL gets their act together, will give it one more chance before going back to Princess / Royal. Read Less

Last minute cruise... Travel agent tried convincing not to take Norwegian so adamant I thought she was getting a cut from other cruise lines I've taken. Called Nowegian & booked anyway. BIG MISTAKE Here's why: 1. Luggage was visibly smashed after searching it 2. Hair in sink. FECES on the inside toilet lid. Told the desk. Told it was cleaned. Later that night FECES was STILL there 3. Bartender rolled eyes because drink made was SOOO sour I NICELY asked for orange juice to cut it 4. Excursion desk worker was RUDE! 5. Front desk dismissive 6. Cabin light was like a strobe light 7. When I tried to share concerns, I was told it wasn't necessary & NONE of the issues were in my docket 8. Toilet would flush after 11:30pm 9. POOR customer service, was in tears as a result! 10. Heard others agree & complain about their experiences and treatment at the desk. I took ONLY my 13 year old and he was bored MOST of the time due to a lack of teen level interesting activities. He even got stuck on the sliding board due to a lack of adequate water flow through the tunnel. He had to SCOOT down the WATER slide! Ridiculous! NOBODY CARES!! AWFUL! Read Less
