Chose the cruise because the price sounded good and was "inclusive". Was disappointed certain cities and port fees were added to the trip and the way it was presented and the experience we had. Excursions were not what was expected and not what I thought they would be and the cities were not tourist oriented and only wanted the tourists dollar. Socialism has ruined these countries and it shows it: no park benches to wait for a bus, charge for public bathrooms, bothered by street "vendors" not being chased by police, trash in the streets and next to restaurants, terrible roads in cities, every restaurant charges like they are Michelin operators ( don't even get bread for your meal but are charge if you want some. Also be aware that the charges upon debarcation include VAT taxes in certain cities and also port taxes in some places that appear on your bill. Do not appreciate wanting a daily charge for the internet ( all American Hotels have FREE internet and the hotels in Europe). Did not appreciate no seating in the World Market: go in, get your food, and then look for a seat and then wind up upside to eat with cold food! Being charge extra for the 2 "special restaurants", having the cruise lines saving money on these venues and also when people are on their tours do not eat on the boat so there again, they save money. Putting water bottles in your room with a sign for purchase on them! Sold as a seven day cruise and never told that you could go for another 14 days: poor marketing on the operator. On our flight over could not sit with my wife and coming home, supposedly, my reservation was canceled. Read Less

We chose this cruise as a wedding anniversary treat, looking for a romantic setting, lots going on but not a party atmosphere, and not overrun with kids. The ship delivered perfectly. There was always plenty to see and do, and places on the ship that catered to adults only. The ship was busy, but there were never long lineups anywhere, even for free pizza, burgers or ice cream on the top deck. The excursions were all wonderful and very well-organized as we were taken ashore and returned quickly and efficiently at all ports. On board, there were good entertainment choices and lots of opportunity to stay fit (Zumba class on the deck, etc.) Loved the adults-only pool areas. The restaurants were definitely a highlight of the cruise with wonderful food experiences at all but one. The suite was beyond expectations in terms of space and comfort. A few minor glitches: difficult to get through to restaurant reservations or room service on the phone. Communication was a challenge with some staff as their English was not great (but then, we don't speak any other languages so some of that is on us). Loved all the restaurants, except Steamers Seafood was a bad experience. Quality of the food and service at this restaurant did not warrant an upcharge. Drinks were a bit pricey. At the Anytime Dining breakfast, it would have been nice to have more yogurt, granola and fruit options. Too focused on American-style breakfast. Some of the entertainment was average, but still fun and enjoyable. And it would have been nice to have even more places on the ship to have a quiet conversation over a drink. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the ports of call and our Parents, who went with us, are Platinum members on Princess. The check in was the quickest we have experienced in comparison to Royal Caribbean. The Food choices each day in the restaurants were excellent and very appealing to look at. PROS: Check in process was efficient and quick The itinery was great. Ports of call were gorgeous and perfectly fit our bucket list. Staff was very friendly and professional. This was especially true with stateroom Stewards and casino hosts. Bar staff was quick and friendly. We booked interior rooms because we didn't plan on staying inside. Were very surprised with how spacious the rooms were and the bedding was so comfortable!! CONS: Entertainment was very poor and catered to over 70 crowd. No variety each night. Food in Dining rooms were great but Buffet selection and taste was poor. Part of our excursion was canceled to rough seas(Amalfi Coast and Pompei) They took us to Sarrento by bus and dropped us off at the square for 1 hour. Poor substitute for a boat cruise down the Amalfi Coast. Princess credited us $40 for the change in itinary. Eve though I appreciate the thought, I think this was highway robbery when you consider the substitution. I felt that Princess Excurtions did not credit us the appropriate amount for the shortfall. How can you compare the experience and price to being dumped at the city square to sit in the hot sun for an hour. I would have preferred to return to the ship and use the credit on another excursion. This left a poor taste in our overall impression of the cruise. They lost one star for this experience. Read Less

This was my family's first cruise on Princess and I have to say we are extremely disappointed. We experienced so many issues, the most important being with poor quality of service. Here is some of what we experienced: - Nights two and three we had horrible (and by horrible I mean nonexistent) service at dinner. Our other tables in our large party were literally finishing their entrees and we had yet to receive our appetizers. I still could not tell you who our assistant server was after our 7 night cruise because he was nowhere to be found. On night three no one came to our table for over a half hour. - The toilet in one of our rooms clogged like clockwork every night for the first three nights and instead of apologizing and fixing the problem the plumber essentially accused us of putting something other than toilet paper down the toilet (we didn't). When we would try to call the desk to have someone repair it no one would answer the phone, forcing us to walk to the lobby each time. After the third time the toilet broke, we went back to the desk and I could see one of the women at the desk mocking me as I spoke to her colleague. In front of my face. I work in the hospitality industry and can assure you that while direct and frustrated, I was very polite and calm while interacting with him. Completely uncalled for. Finally the next morning the plumber actually disassembled and repaired the toilet instead of the usual quick-fix from the previous nights. It worked fine after this. - The toilets in the public women's rooms were often filthy and would remain this way for hours. - The currency machines were out of order 80% of the time. The machines to check your account balance were down the last two nights of the cruise, causing insanely long lines at the front desk. When directed to the desk to exchange money, they acted as though guests were a bother. Every crew member we spoke with at the front desk was incredibly unprofessional and far from friendly. - In fact, most staff we interacted with on the cruise were unprofessional, unapologetic, and rude, making it very apparent they do not enjoy their jobs and do not wish to be there. After constant issues, sometimes all you want is a seemingly genuine apology, and we never received that. Not once. - Like I said, the attitude of most staff we encountered was poor to say the least. A couple examples: We watched an employee in the photography studio on the last night of our cruise yell (loudly!) and berate an elderly woman who took a photo of one of her pictures, not realizing this was not allowed. He followed her around the store yelling loudly for everyone to hear, demanding she delete the photo immediately. This was NOT the proper way to handle this situation and everyone around was mortified and embarrassed for her. Another night while shopping in Calypso Cove if you needed assistance from a staff member you would not receive it. Why? The two working were arguing in front of the store. - Want a drink at night? If you are directed to a bar that is supposed to be open until 11pm, prepare to get there only for them to be completely shut down and unable to pour you a drink by 10:30, a half hour before closing time. This happened twice at Adagio. - Spa staff was polite and helpful, until there was a concern with one of the treatments. Their demeanor then completely changed and became curt and defensive. - Disembarkation was chaotic. We did the walk-off option as we had to be off the ship early, and our entire group had to carry our 50+ pound suitcases down over ten flights of stairs because it was impossible to get an elevator. Three of the five elevators were marked 'R' for reserved and the other two were at capacity for over twenty minutes before we opted to take the stairs. Two people in our party who were unable to take the stairs waited over 45 minutes for an elevator. Children, seniors, and everyone in between were lugging their gigantic suitcases down the stairwells. POSITIVES: - Our stateroom, while dated, was always very clean. Our steward Winston was so friendly, always asking about our day with a genuine smile. - The restaurant 'Share' by Curtis Stone was excellent. We loved our food and entire experience here and agree it was definitely worth the up-charge. We wish we came here more than once - The Ports of Call were great. We loved each destination. It should be noted that we did not book any of our excursions through the cruiseline, only outside companies. - Embarkation was smooth, quick, and efficient. As first-time guests on Princess, we are beyond disappointed. After one day of this, we thought 'maybe this is a one-off.' But the continuous issues and unapologetic staff day in and day out made this vacation far from relaxing. We had high hopes and expectations and this cruise did not live up to them. For all of these reasons I would not recommend Princess cruiseline. I have no experience on their other ships but this one specifically was disappointing. I have sailed with three other cruiselines and have never experienced such poor service. My family spent a ton of money for what should have been the trip of a lifetime and while the ports were fabulous (again, excursions not booked through Princess) our time on the ship was stressful, agitating, and honestly shocking. Went on this cruise for my friends 50th Birthday. The whole cruise was amazing onboad the crew were great they could not do enough for me. They made my experience priceless. The on shore excursions are a must and I pre booked before leaving so I did not have to line up to book and took my time researching them. All the places we visited were amazing to see and plenty to do. You don't have to go a shore if you don't want to but would be mad if you didn't. The bar and wait staff in the casino were a lot of fun and I liked how they remembered your name and your drink. Also top deck and pool side were great too. The daily activities were fun and a great way to meet new people. Entertainment by the cruise entertainment people were quite funny and enjoyable. All in all had the best time ever. It seamed like an ideal way to relax after a busy work schedule and as a way to see other parts of Europe in transit to Turkey. It is a matter of choice how busy one can be on a cruise and this one did not disappoint. The sea days provided the necessary relaxation to reboot the energy for the day excursions and in preparation for the long hikes ahead. A taste of three different cultures during the shore excursions provided the enrichment and entertainment that I enjoyed. Gibraltar provided the English/Spanish history. At Marseilles, although it was disappointing that our first option was not available due to the bicycle race Avignon provided another historical visit and a glimpse at the countryside. Genoa and Livorno both gave us the opportunity to see the countryside and observe the enormous engineering feats that the Italians have accomplished with roads through hills with tunnels and viaducts. The picturesque beaches were a treat. Leaving the ship in Rome was inevitable but a place previously visited. The excursions are as described in the brochures and efficiently organised at each port along with the apparent seamless process for embarkation and disembarkation. The activities provided were a huge range and everyone should have found plenty of a high quality to meet their needs. Emerald Princess is a great ship. Read Less

Excursions too rushed and actually didn't see anything properly and definitely did not have the experience expected. Summary - 'Been there seen that' - Not 'Been there and done that'. Embarkation and disembarking were very well organised and efficient. Cleanliness was high and service from our steward was excellent. No issue service wise. Food was basically the same form day to day will minimal variations - food was ok of you love great if you love salt. Would have preferred to have more local foods from each destination we went to. Couldn't get into the restaurant we wanted even when booking a day on advance. Was my first cruise so wasn't sure what to expect - but definitely felt underwhelmed. My 2 teenage daughters did enjoy it but even their excitement was starting to dull toward the end. Everything seemed to have an additional charge when I expected most things to be included. Overall pretty poor value - rather do hotels and stay for a few days at each location that this overrated hop on hop off bus. Read Less

The destinations were fabulous! However, everything else on the cruise was horrific. The food was so bad that when we did discover edible food, we thought we had hit the jackpot! We went to bed hungry when the ship did not have a stop. When we got off the boat, we ate on shore and purchased lots of snacks. The menu was not pescatarian friendly and the cooks clearly struggled with seafood. As for our cabin, it was located directly under the aft deck. Every morning the crew dragged chairs over our heads to set- up the deck. We requested another room and offered to pay for an upgrade, but the guest services never got back to us. The excursion assistant manager is so disrespectful that he should be fired! The photographer never showed up for our appointment. We waited for 40 minutes. When we bumped into her, she claimed not to have us on her itinerary. Our luggage was misplaced for disembarkation. Overall, Princess Cruises are the worst. Read Less

My agents recommendation. Travelling with my daughter who was a first time cruiser we had three days in Athens before boarding and then a magical two weeks of discovering the ship and the 9 ports and finishing in Rome. Everything ran so smoothly getting on the ship and getting off,no hiccups luggage was out there waiting . After tours on shore and before we entered the ship the staff were waiting for us with cool towels and cool drinks , we were all very grateful as the days were very hot. Once back onboard it was so hard to fit all the things in entertainment etc plus choices where to eat . There were so many choices of where to eat , lots of variety and food was top class wherever you went, service at all of them was impeccable, entertainment was entertaining great songs , costumes and staging.Loved seeing people compete, having the courage to get up and sing in the Voice of the Ocean. I could have kept cruising , I was the lucky winner of Stanley the Bear...Can hardly wait to cruise again with Princess. Read Less

This was our fourth cruise on princess 2nd time on the Emerald. Th is was a 14 day cruise. Starting in Rome. 10 ports ending in Barcelona. I recommend this cruise or any cruise going to th is region of the world, we previously did a family land tour of northern Italy so this would be all new territory. We were picked up at our hotel in the Spanish steps area to the Ship. I think it was about Two hours. This trip was my wife and I first time cruising just the two of us. Getting on the ship was very organized and quick dropped off our bags waited about 2 minutes to get to the check in desk received our cards and off to the ship. We had a balcony 14 deck near the front of the ship, same type size room we had when we did Alaskan cruise Two years earlier. Plenty of room for two and our four bags . One thing to know if you never cruised before we bring a heavy 6 foot extension cord with multiple plug ins. The bed was great room clean and our room Stewart was very good always seemed to know when we would leave room always kept clean . There are two dining rooms we ate Da Vinci, and Michelangelo. We ate breakfast almost every day at Da Vinci. . And Dinner at Michelangelo had the best Materdi Carlos the magnificent And our lovely waiter Franco from Mexico. We had anytime dinning but our table was always saved for us we started with just my wife and I and as we made friends we had a table for 6.the food was good some excellent some ok mostly very very good. Franco always new what we’re drinking and never waited long to receive them. I would not recommend the buffet much. We ate there two times . Excursion We did two from the ship. We did Pompeii from Salerno all I can say was the tour guide from the princess ship was horrible he made up stuff and not one time did he take us to a shady area when it was near 100 degrees. My suggestion make all your excursions before you leave home online with reputable companies. We did a excursion in Kotor Montenegro was booked before we left home. We did this from a group of 6 Aussies we met from roll call. We did a speedboat. Blue cave , submarine caves tour with swimming at the blue caves,a very fun 3 hour tour, we then did The Godfather tour booked from princess , this was a very fun day. Great tour guide if your a fan of The Godfather movies you will enjoy this. Our next paid excursion was also not from princess with family we met from roll call. We did Pompeii again from Naples. This was a fantastic tour our guide his name was Sasha was so knowledgeable his father was also a tour guide I told him what the tour guide from the princess ship told us and he said what load of garbage i showed him the pictures I took from the first tour and what the guide told us about that. He was blown away with the crap the first guide told us. Every time there was shade he took us to the shady spots and explained what was the real history, all ”other ports we did either the hop on bus or just walked the towns. We had some of the best food on land ever.seafood was more then fantastic. One thing if your going to book your excursion from princess do it before you get on the ship most of the good excursions sold out very fast. I do recommend using non princess excursion. We made a lot of new friends in this ship. After dinner we would go to crooners bar see the piano player. We did trivia one night. And we watched a few movies on the deck with greasy popcorn. If you drink much including alcohol coffee and water get the drink package we got ours free with our balcony booking so it was worth it. Drinks are not cheap if you buy your own . Bottle water $2.50. Latte $2.50 each . We had a later time to get off the ship in Barcelona our transportation was supposed to pick us up at 10 but after 3 phone calls they finally got there by11.00 there is no place to sit and almost no shade at the Barcelona terminal. Then they took us to the wrong hotel , this was not booked through princess . One thing I would recommend transfers book from princess. If you smoke they have a cigar smoke room or you can smoke on the 16 th deck ... Feel free to ask my anything you would like to know. Read Less

We are a family of 6 - 3 generations consisting of 80 year olds x 2, late 40’s x2 and 2 children 8 and 12. The booking experience was not great with the dining time being changed from 6.30pm to 5.00pm without our knowledge and the on board packages being altered on the day we were booking them. However, we were determined to enjoy the holiday and we did. The ship in our opinion is very good, with majority of the staff being friendly. We did find the muster station drill a little bit cringeworthy and reminded us very much of Disney, and not in a good way. The food in traditional dining was okay, but if it was not for the staff, we would say the experience was not great. The buffet during the day we found to be good, clean and efficient. The cabins were kept very clean and we liked the fact we could have the balcony dividers open allowing for an open area for our family, which worked very well. My father was 80 during the cruise and we booked to go to the Steakhouse. Big mistake - wines were out of stock, poor service and food, and the whole atmosphere was not what we expected. Diners were there at 930pm wearing pool attire and sun hats, whilst we had dressed formally. Entertainment was good, pool areas were good, bar service was good. We had prebooked the soda package but not convinced we were not always charged for soft drinks as they do not give you receipts. The demo with the chef and maitre d’ was very good and funny. The tender at Kotor was a shambles with us having to wait for over an hour to get off. Had we known the length of time, we would have arrived earlier. On the return, they had run out of drinks and cloths despite standing out on quayside in the heat and they knew how many people were still not on board - they seemed ill prepared. On the morning of disembarkation, why are most lifts not working? They all were reserved which is crazy when you have elderly relatives. We did not do any ship excursions as learnt our lesson on previous occasions - always book your own! Our cabins were right by the laundry - noise was not an issue at all. Perfectly happy with cabins. We all enjoyed the cruise itinerary and particular pleasures were Pompeii, Mykonos, Chania and Athens. A good, family holiday and felt safe and happy at all times. Would I go with Princess again - possibly but not overwhelmed and would think twice. Read Less

We chose this cruise as we had a large party and it was basically the one that suited all. That said there was some thought that there may have been better cruise available - that was proved incorrect as we all loved it. The embarkation process was seamless and very fast. Baggage assistants on the wharf helped the process and our luggage was in our room when we opened the door. The condition of the ship at present is very good with no real sign anywhere of wear and tear. Common areas are very nice and well maintained. The stateroom was above our exceptions in size and condition. The itinerary from Barcelona to Athens was very impressive and some notable surprises for us in Gibraltar and Kotor. We all agreed that what we saw of Marseilles made it our least favourite port. Stateroom steward was perfect....there when you needed him otherwise rarely saw him. he kept the room spotless. Meals were spot-on. Be aware that if you are doing a 14 or 21 day Med cruise that your menu will basically repeat every 7 days. Shore tours were very good and ran smoothly. Read Less

Just came back from a fabulous 14-day med cruise from Athens to Gibraltar and back to Rome. - Ship: 4 STARS. The ship was just refurbished and was in tip top shape. It's a very pretty ship but is not one of the newest, 5,000 passenger "mega" ships with roller coasters and 18-hole golf courses. - Rooms: 4 STARS. Rooms are larger than other ships and well laid out though the interiors feel a few years dated. Brand new mattresses were very comfortable. The balconies were great. A must have! - Activities: 4 STARS. There is lots to do on the ship but no pressure to join in and there are always quiet corners you can escape to. The gym is well equipped with brand new machines, which have a great forward view of the sea. - Entertainment: 5 STARS. The entertainment, particularly the guest entertainers (singers, comedians, piano player), was very good. I loved the 45-minute length of the shows. That is appropriate for all of us with attention deficit disorders. - Service: 3.5 STARS. Crew was generally courteous and efficient but workmanlike and detached at times. Quite frankly they weren't particularly friendly. Part of that may have been our utilizing the anytime dining and so we always had different waiters. We may have had more of a connection with out wait staff if we did traditional dining. At times some of the bars and restaurants were understaffed. I think the lack of traditional tipping affects the quality of service and much of the crew seemed overworked and exhausted. They did a good job at accomplishing their assigned tasks but there wasn't a sense of warm hospitality on the ship. Princess needs to review and amend their staffing ratios so there is a better staff to passenger ratio in the various venues to allow for more of a relaxed and hospitable atmosphere and mroe responsive and expedient service. - Food: 3.5 STARS. Overall the dining was decent but a bit inconsistent. The menus in the main dining room are fairly limited and consist mainly of simple American favorites, which I liked. Sometimes execution in the main dining rooms was off as some dishes were better than others. There is good selection in the buffet areas and they seemed to have reorganized them during the recent refurb because there was no real lines. Sometimes tables were hard to come by at the buffet but usually it was not an issue. The pizza shop and burger grill are both excellent. The soft serve ice cream is meh. The bars serve good drinks that are reasonably priced but sometimes the waits are ridiculous (see staffing issues above). We didn't try room service or the specialty restaurants. - One Complaint: Charging $5-15 per person for shuttle buses from a distant berthing port to a city center is ridiculous and unfair. If a Princess cruise itinerary says they will take me to Barcelona, Marseille, Naples or Livorno, then they should take me to those places, not a berthing station that is 3-5 miles from the city center and not-traversable via walking. If I can't walk from where the ship docks then Princess has not lived up to its end of the bargain. Some locales had free shuttle buses and some did not (some ports did not need shuttle buses as the ship docked right in the city center). Charging for a shuttle bus is akin to charging for a tender (which were required in two ports we visited). Princess wouldn't do the latter and so shouldn't do the former. Do better Princess! Stop nickeling and diming people that paid $5-10,000 for a cabin. My one complaint aside, this was a great cruise and a great time. I would sail again on Princess, though I am not sure it's any better than Carnival or RC. Read Less

Booked this Mediterranean Adriatic cruise to spend time with friends and to see Montenegro and Sicily. Big mistake to book with Princess even as an Elite level Princess customer the accommodations and service were terrible considering the price. The Emerald Princess ship is very outdated and I would never book another cruise on this ship. Our cabin was small, hot and noisy. The staff was friendly but their overall service was poor in terms of making improvements. I have cruised with Princess for years but this was my first cruise with them since 2016. Although I had heard unfavorable feedback from friends and family, I was shocked on how much their service, excursions and equipment had declined. This cruise was overpriced based on the experience and I felt Princess is doing a lot of cost savings at the expense of quality. There are additional charges for everything and there drink and internet charges are outrageous. We stayed in Barcelona for a couple of days in a Princess package Hotel. What a mistake, same issues, poor service and overpriced. Paid them $400/night for a hotel we found out you can book for $150/night. Room was not available until late evening and the luggage storage and check in was a cluster. We were disappointed in the ports of calls and excursions. Gave Princess every chance to acknowledge our survey complaints requesting someone to contact us for feedback versus sending this review. We have been a loyal customer to them over the years reaching Elite status in their program. If we experienced this cannot even imagine what new or mid customers experienced. On the whole this was a fantastic cruise. Gibraltar, Marseille, Genova, and even Pisa (once you manage to leave the port of Livorno) were all fantastic. I can highly recommend the itinerary. Buffet areas were busy but we always managed to find a table for the four of us. Food was good, generally no complaints, although they were running out of basics like honey and muesli by day 5 and the watermelon were past their ‘use by date’ by then. Waiting staff were great, all of them although I could hear a rather heated work discussion from the ‘kitchen’ area which was a bit awkward. We embarked straight after our flight in Barcelona at 2 p.m. planning to head out to the city afterwards. This plan fell through because we were told we had to attend the safety demonstration at 5 p.m. with all the usual threats about not attending. They didn’t tell us there would be a second safety demo at night, which would have suited our plans much better. So we missed out on Barcelona. Gibraltar was perfect as a cruise port. The town entrance is a 15 minute walk from the pier. Another 15 minutes walk to the cable car. Took a shared taxi (as advertised everywhere on bill boards everywhere for 35 euros) up the mountain due to long cues for the cable car. The driver/guide was fine but spoke in as few words as possible. The monkeys/apes/macaques/whatever they are were present. The caves worth a short visit and the view stunning. Sailing away from Gibraltar is a sight worth seeing. I did not expect much from Marseille but the city proved us wrong. Finding your way through typical French streets leading to the steps all the way up the steps to the Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral was one of the highlights of the cruise for us. Took a City bus tour in Genova, but you can see the same sights by foot if just head out from the cruise terminal to the aquarium and then enter the inner city. You can enter the city straight from the terminal but the area looked a bit ‘rough’ at first sight. I could be wrong. I loved walking through the narrow streets and alleys of Genova and the aquarium is one of the best I’ve seen with an impressive dolphin tank. Make sure to take a picture from the ship of the city just before sunset. The light is stunning. Now onto Livorno. The shabby port of Livorno left us with a very sour taste and we will avoid this port in the future. Why? Because you have to pay to get off the ship. Even though the town centre is less than a mile away, passengers still have to pay five euros per person for a shuttle bus. I get it, the harbor area doesn't lend itself to pedestrians, but at least offer the shuttle service for free (like in Marseille and many other ports). It's a matter of principle. But what really ruined this day for us is how we and others were treated by the shuttle staff: -As is my custom on almost any cruise destination, I like to start the day with a morning run through town as soon as the ship is docked. It's a great way to get a feel of the town while the wife and kids are still asleep. At least that was the plan till a local member of staff rudely blocked my exit from the terminal: you cannot exit the terminal by yourself, you have to pay for a shuttle. So far for my morning run. -Due to a small miscommunication both my wife and I ended up buying those shuttle tickets for the family.Totally our fault and we spotted the mistake immediately. But guess what, the shuttle service flatly refused to reimburse the two surplus tickets. We were the ONLY passengers in the terminal, the tickets were bought less than a minute ago form the same employee, so it was obvious we did not use the tickets. But nope, they flatly refused to take the tickets back. -We rented an extravagantly overpriced car from Avis. There were 3 ships in town, so yeah, I get it, the price goes up. But at least clean the diesel fuel spill that covered most of the rear passenger door and booth. Driving is fine if you are used to Southern European roads or confident enough behind the wheel. -Pisa was fine. The tower is there. It leans. We took the same cliché pictures as every other tourist and went back to the port, returned the rental car, and waited, waited, waited, 10, 20 30, 40+ minutes for the paid shuttle to arrive. In the sun. At least five other shuttles passed us by, just not the very specific one for our ship. Our ship which was just a stones throw away.. -Oh and a fellow shuttle passenger got shouted at for not presenting his ticket on the spot. I'll end my rant here. We had six fantastic days during this cruise. Just not in Livorno. If you buy an official tour then you will probably be just fine. But if you like to do your own thing like us, then you know now what to expect. Read Less

Emerald Princess Cruise Ship Review: Summary of pros:                                                      Summary of cons: Ship Atmosphere Our steward (name was Kemmanat) Room location on Lido Deck                                     Port of Salerno view Big room/closet                                                         Food was hit or miss Princess Beds                                                              Great Internet Gluten Free taken seriously Share Crooner’s Bar/AJ Clarke Skywalker’s bartenders Pools Love Boat Cast/Ashleigh Front Desk Pompeii/Salerno port Embarkation/Disembarkation                                                          Overall:  One of our favorite ships, and one of our favorite cruises!  Ship atmosphere: Relaxed ambiance.  This cruise was all about the destinations, and this ship was perfect for that.  No over-the-top gimmicks, no climbing walls and waterslides! This kind of energy was saved for the ports and excursions.  It was a mostly older crowd which looked to be ages 40+ (including us at 49 and 52). We saw very few young children on this cruise. It appeared and sounded as if most people were European or Australian.     Lido Deck Room 247/Balcony: First, we LOVED being on the Lido deck.  Walk right out to the pool, the food, etc.  We expected noise, being so close to all of this, but never heard anything! It was very convenient! But second, there was no one above our balcony that could look down onto our balcony, as we could to the ones below us.  Speaking of the balcony, you need this!  Watch the sunrise or sunset from the privacy of your balcony in a chair with a drink or snack. Wake up to amazing views and go outside to take pics in your PJs.  It’s just an entirely different experience with a balcony.  Room L247 was a good size, with a huge closet and a lot of drawers.  By far, this is our favorite cabin on any cruise we’ve sailed on, and we will always book on the Lido deck in the future.     Princess Beds: That bed….I miss that bed!  The bed and the bedding were so comfortable.  We’ve talked about the bed/bedding as much as we’ve talked about anything else!   Internet:  The Internet was incredible!  All texts and pictures were sent and received instantly as if we were on land.  We’d sit at the pools before dinner after long days on our feet exploring in the ports, perusing Facebook, posting pictures, using Google Maps, watching news stories, etc.  Not once was anything slow. One night we were nowhere near land in the middle of the ocean and I sat inside our cabin on our bed Facetiming our children. And this is before the upcoming Medallion system! Food:  We arrived to see a Gluten free acknowledgment on the desk, even though I’d already received an email verification from them.  When we gave our card for drinks at dinner, the server would then point out what was gluten free on the menu.  So it must have also been registered electronically.  So nice to know they take it seriously as I have Celiac’s disease. There were always gluten free options, no matter where we went to eat, with always at least one dessert option in the main cafeteria area. However, the food was hit or miss; sometimes great, sometimes disgusting really.  Overall I’d say the food was fair during the day, and above average at dinner.  Not as memorable as other cruises, but not bad, mostly.     Share: Amazing food!  But allow a lot of time!  There are six courses with considerable time in between.  For us, it was just too much time spent on dinner – about 3 hours.  But all of the people working there were very nice and went out of their way to make our anniversary dinner special.  They even sang to us! Crooner’s Bar/AJ Clarke: We ended up going there four out of seven nights. The bartenders were professional, friendly, and skilled.  It was them that introduced us to a Beverly Hills Iced Tea, based on questions about what we liked.  AJ Clarke was very talented and entertaining.  One night his mom was his guest. We very much enjoyed his performances.  We also liked the Crooner’s Bar isn’t enclosed, allowing people to come and go at ease and spend a little or a lot of time there, without worrying about interrupting his performance. Skywalker’s Bar:  The bartenders were great!  Funny, accommodating, and skilled! We sat at the bar the last night and wished we’d done that every night.  We went to Skywalker’s almost every evening. The DJ, servers, music, crowd – average. The bartenders there made Skywalker’s a lot of fun!     Pools: There were four pools, never crowded.  We loved them all, but especially the ones at the back of the ship.  It was amazing watching the sea go by behind us. The band, The Sound, frequently played at the Neptune pool.  They were incredible!  Great lead female singer, awesome song choices (top 40 from many eras; songs everyone knows). But it was entirely too loud!  However, moving up to the top deck took care of that. When they started playing, many people would move to the top deck, but also many would leave.  I felt bad for the band as I’m sure they noticed people leave when they started playing.  But it wasn’t them, they were amazing! It was just overwhelmingly loud if you were down in the pool area.      Love Boat Cast: We had every intention of attending the Love Boat fun, but missed it due to an emergency call from home we had to take care of.  However, upon leaving our room after that call, we encountered some of the cast at the elevators as they were just leaving the pool area where it took place, on the Lido deck close to our room. They carried the fun that we’d missed to us personally!  Took our hands and danced, even used our cameras to take selfies.  As quick as they appeared, they were off, laughing and having fun.  They probably ran into other cruisers and made their night also!  They could have ended their responsibility on deck and gone on their way.  Thank you Love Boat cast!  That made our night!  I was able to zoom in on one of their name tags from the selfies and one girl’s name was Ashleigh. Her tag says she is the Jr. Asst Cruise Director, from South Africa. Thank you!   Front Desk: Everyone at the front desk was incredible.  They helped us with a few different things, but mostly they were instrumental in getting our luggage to us, that had been missing for five days.  It was the fault of United Airlines, not theirs.  But when our luggage finally made it to Santorini, it was them that got it from the port, onto the ship, and to our room.  Thank you! Pompeii Ruins: Our very favorite excursion, ever! Our guide, Paulo, was incredible too! If you ever have a chance, cruise port or otherwise, this is simply a must!       Embarkation and disembarkation:  We arrived with no luggage, so it was very simple from the start.  But we walked right in, and right onto the ship.  From Uber to our room was about 15 minutes!  Disembarkation was also simple.  We were the last group off, walked right off, and right to our luggage.  Again, from room to transfer service was about 15 minutes.  Easiest process we’ve ever been through.  No lines at all, anywhere, on or off.  Salerno: One morning we opened our balcony curtains to the amazing view of the next port – and it wasn’t.  Apparently this port is also a container terminal.  The view was row after row of huge industrial containers. Not a huge deal, but a strike contrast from the other incredible views off our balcony that we enjoyed waking up to each morning. Our excursion guide explained that they’d actually built a port for cruises, then discovered it wasn’t deep enough and had to return to using the container terminal.       Steward: Sadly, this was our first cruise where our steward disappointed us.  According to him, our schedule should revolve around what made his job the most easy.  When it didn’t we were judged, put down, and criticized.  Most of the people in the rooms he serviced rose earlier, ate earlier, and went to bed sooner. Several times a day he would ask us why we weren’t in port, weren’t we going to eat dinner, when were we going to bed. Our replies were met with judgement, shaking his head, looking put out, or openly telling us we wouldn’t receive his services if we didn’t comply.  One night early on told us he was done at 5:30, and wouldn’t be back to turn down our bed if we didn’t leave for dinner by 5. We told him we wouldn’t be leaving for dinner by then but that was fine, we understood, no worries. But at that point we tried to temper his frustration by responding to his many criticisms about our schedule.  We explained that we were on an 8 hour time difference, slept/ate later, liked the activities offered at night, slept in, liked going to the pool in between the port excursion and dinner, etc.  He shook his head, put out. I walked away thinking we didn’t owe him an explanation, and that his response was incredibly rude. It got worse as the week went on as he tried to tell us what our schedule should be, and we went on with the schedule we’d planned, on OUR vacation. He became more and more insistent, and we anticipated his glaring judgment, harsh words, or condemnation each time we came and went from our cabin.  One day we returned from port to put our suits on. He asked where we were going and I told him we were going to the pool.  He then scolded us and asked why we weren’t getting ready for dinner. We told him we were going to dinner later. Again, we were met with his irritation.  There were too many incidents to go into each one, but most were similar to this, each worse than the next.  However, the worst incident was one night when we were in our room taking pictures of the sunset and getting ready for dinner, when he went from annoying to alarming.  We had just returned from port and there he was standing by our room, again asking why we weren’t at dinner.  We explained we wanted to watch the sun set from our balcony, and would also be getting ready for dinner, AND what time we’d be leaving, that it would be at least an hour or more.  He wasn’t happy about that. About 15 minutes later he opened the door without even knocking.  He knew we hadn’t left, obviously. He probably hadn’t left the place he was standing when we got to our room – lurking, as always, by our door.  But apparently he thought we needed a reminder that we were on his time and he was waiting, and that barging in would make us go faster. I was unclothed, nude from the waist up.  It was very embarrassing, and the trust to our privacy was now completely gone. That was a purposeful violation of our privacy that alarmed and actually frightened me. But even that aside, I don’t appreciate being told how to spend my time while on vacation, especially that I should be out of the room by 7 and back from the port and at dinner by 5:00, when the ship doesn’t ask that, provides many activities at all times, and doesn’t even require you to be back on the ship that early.  The dining room schedule was our focus, not his. If I want to sleep in I don’t owe an explanation and don’t deserve condemnation or judgment, from anyone.  I don’t need to be scolded by the steward because I went to the pool at HIS dinner time, or because I bring pastries back to our room instead of eating them there. Boy, his stare in the hallway between me and the napkin was intense! The pastries were gone when we returned a couple hours later, of course. Part of a cruise is enjoying the freedom to experience the many wonderful things scheduled, at all times, not on the steward’s schedule. But even if we wanted to sleep in all day or not eat dinner at all, that’s our choice, it’s our vacation. Usually the steward is rarely seen. Ours was always there, as soon as we opened the door to leave, and right there when we returned, asking why we weren’t where we should be, according to him.  We continued to be kind, in every interaction, even when he barged into the room as I was nude.  What do you do when someone has a key to your room and there’s nothing you can do about it? You respond with kindness, but include it in your review.  Hopefully others will also let Princess know, and this will be taken care of for future cruisers. Summary: We love Princess, and we loved the Emerald ship! We’ve sailed with Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian previously but this was our first Princess cruise. We are now BIG fans of Princess. We had an almost perfect week! Read Less

We wanted to see some of Europe and this looked to be a great way to see a lot of the places we wanted to see and cruising is one of the best ways to holiday. unpack once and let them take you to the places you want to see. The ship is very welcoming lots to do well set out very clean. Was impressed with the food on board especially the dining room, all food groups were catered with. service on board was exceptional couldn't fault it. Activities on board were ok some needed to go on longer as passengers were enjoying themselves, and some games, etc just stopped. some activities were only available on port days but we were off on shore would have liked some of these to be done later or on sea days. the Ports were very interesting and different we did x2 tours with Princess a bit more than we wanted to spend but very happy with the experience. My husband and I were celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary and wanted to explore Italy and Greece. I loved the itinerary Princess Emerald had to offer which covered a lot of the places we wanted to see...and more. The ship was very nice and had a lot more amenities that I wanted such as the "adult only" pool areas as well as the sanctuary pool/areas. Our cabin, while an inside one, was more than we expected too. Surprisingly, it had enough space not to feel cramped up and storage for our things. Our stateroom service was exceptional too! Everyday she made sure we were comfortable and happy with our accommodations. Our dinning experiences were great too. We had anytime dinning so we got to enjoy the different rooms and waiters; all the Major Ds were good too. We tried two of their restaurants: Crown Grill and Share - they are a must do! Food and service was phenomenal at each. Entertainment and activities were good too...it was nice that they balance it out (not a 24/hr party nor a lack of one). The ports and excursions were nice and many of our guides were good. We enjoyed those trips and it was well organized. Overall we had a great time, met a lot of interesting people from all over the world, and it was the vacation we were hoping for. We enjoyed everything Princess had to offer and how it provided an amazing experience for us; that we literally cried when we stepped off the ship for the last time. The Emerald Princess is a lovely ship. Not the newest ship or the biggest ship and has some needed upgrades/updates that are scheduled. Medallion Net etc. but it is a lovely ship. We sailed transatlantic from Ft. Lauderdale to Rome. 22 days and enjoyed every one of them. Great weather helped. Friendly passengers who are like minded were lots of fun but the best part of the experience was the staff. they are remarkable. Mike and Ref in International Cafe and Vines are super stars. Berlin the bartender in Cub Fusion is great and Amal in Adagio is always fun and entertaining. Magda and Clifton in the Sanctuary will do anything you ask to make your time there fabulous. Our stateroom steward Ramel was helpful with any special requests and may be the best steward we’ve ever had and we’ve cruised 10+ times. Food options are extensive. We especially enjoyed all the casual dining, Salty Dog Grill, Slice, and the International Cafe. Healthy options abound and my husband actually lost about 5 lbs!! Wish I had. Pools were clean and well maintained, entertainment options were more than we could do. Loved playing trivia and the comedy shows. Johanna the port lecturer is superb! Now for the cons - all Princess ships pool loungers are uncomfortable as was ur mini suite balcony furniture. TV selections were minimal. Played the same shows over and over. Okay if you’re on a 7 day cruise but on a 22 day cruise it was pretty boring. No DVD player in the MS so no movies. The movies that were offered were new releases and very good. The self service laundry on the Dolphin deck was marginal. Only two washers and two dryers. One of the dryers was broken a good part of our cruise and it was tiresome trying to find another place to dry clothes. Other than that it was wonderful. We’d definitely do it again and would recommend it to friends!!! Read Less

Chose this cruise because it was later in the spring, have cruised to the Baltic five times already, and cruised the TA on the Emerald Princess its inaugeral year. Our first surprise was a five category upgrade. Embarkation was a breeze with our luggage delivered before dinner. Pizza for lunch did not disapoint. DaVinci main dining room was great our waiter and assistant waiter were professional and and lots of fun. The entertainment was high class as always with a very funny Cruise Director. Activities were so numerous, one could not attend them all. The complimentary Sauna was great. The new Salty Dog grill Lido deck has an improved menu. The Fresh Market buffet is remodeled with a larger selection. The BBQ and Seafood restaurants are an improvement along with Share, Crown Grill, and Salty Dog pub. I did not use the Excursion desk. Disembarkation was very smooth. Thank you Emerald Princess for a very enjoyable TA. Read Less

We chose because, although this would be my first cruise. the other three people had previous good experiences with Princess. However, all four of us will NEVER sail with Princess again. From booking on there were problems. We were misled on the use of on board credits; our free premium drink package was not honored until we proved it was legit; food was lukewarm on the buffets while the plates were scalding hot. One real danger to passengers: Princess is very misinformed about passport use. They claimed passports did not need to be carried with you off the ship, and were totally ignorant of when a passport needs to be stamped at entry. Almost got us arrested following their advice. Luckily, quite by accident, we met a Spanish immigration official in Barcelona who gave us the real information. But the real problem was with shore excursions. Be forewarned, Princess will not come to your aid if something goes wrong. Our tour guide went rogue. During the "kidnapping", I tried to call Princess. No phone numbers worked. Their offices were not open. When I finally got someone and gave all the info, including the location,tour number, my name, and all contact info, they hung up and failed to call back. Then for the next five days, they attempted to bury the incident. They never investigated. I forced their hand, and had meetings with all levels of management, including the captain, who took no responsibility and claimed that Princess would never cover up any incident. BTW, after this horrendous experience, I could not leave the ship due to panic attacks until we got to the end of the cruise. I was a prisoner in a billion dollar jail. All Princess staff claimed that no cover up was going on. They never investigated, even 30+ days later and never tried ANYTHING to help. They endangered my life and the lives of 40 other passengers, and showed nothing but neglect and indifference. Keep in mind that Princess Cruises was just fined $20 million dollars for covering up dumping waste in the Caribbean over a five year probationary period by falsifying records and lying during inspections. So the bottom line is: Princess just wants to cash in, and anything else can be bought off, even the health and safety of its passengers. Read Less

Had been on Royal Princess five years ago and it was wonderful. Also, Princess Cruises seems to be the only cruise line with self-service laundry on each deck. -Check-in at Port Everglades was chaotic. Different agents told us to go to different places. -Luggage took almost 6 hours to come to our cabin. -Before we left home, Princess agent told us unlimited email was $139.99 and we had to buy this service on board. When on board, we were charged $169.99 - $30 extra. Ship’s internet manager “Dan” refunded this overcharge after we complained. -Took three visits to Customer Service desk to get our computers set up with ship's WiFi. Repeated efforts and no phone answer (on hold 10 minutes then gave up) at Customer Service desk. -Internet down all day (5 May). We requested and received one day refund. -Machine in laundry that sells tokens was broken—reported 5 and 6 May. Finally fixed 7 May. -One of the main reasons we chose Princess over other cruise lines was availability of self-service laundry. With thousands of passengers and only perhaps a dozen machines, demand was high and machines were often unavailable. To further complicate problem, management decided to open laundry only from 8 am-8 pm, with limited hours. Solution – keep laundry open 24 hours/day to meet high demand. -Shore excursions offered us a tour of the Royal Palace in Rabat during Casablanca port call but we left the ship so late (tardy) that the palace was closed by the time we reached it in Rabat. At my request, shore excursion director sent me a letter of apology and a 50 % refund. -Ship's entertainment was painfully loud, causing me and many others to walk out at what could have been enjoyable. Pre Cruise: Our vacation began in Ft. Lauderdale where we stayed in a small, newly-built, Quality Suites hotel near the airport. If you're staying overnight prior to the cruise, you won't need a rental car. The hotel will pick you up at the airport and transport you to the cruise pier for free. You won't need a car rental, as you can walk to a few nearby restaurants. But if you plan to do shopping or site seeing, rent a car and enjoy everything that this city has to offer. Embarkation: We boarded the Emerald Princess on Saturday around Noon time and the call for general boarding had commenced. Although we have Elite status, we were ushered into a long line which took about an hour for us to get on board. So we missed having lunch in the MDR which closes at 1pm. We didn't mind this so much because we had five days at sea before reaching our first port. We were not in a hurry. We chose this voyage because we wanted to experience ports that we had not previously visited. In Barcelona, all passengers were required to exit the ship for customs clearance. No luggage checks, just passport clearance. Passengers on a tour/excursion were required to take their passports with them for re-entry at the terminal. Those individuals who remained on board took their passport to the control officer. Quick & easy. Of course, some passengers didn't understand that the term "all passengers" applied to them, so the crew had to locate those individuals and usher them off the ship before the rest of us could return. We waited about 2 hours in the terminal before we noticed that everyone was already returning to the ship. I recommend that you take a tour of the city to avoid the wait time and enjoy a walking tour of Barcelona. The bus & metro service are super easy, the taxi service is reasonable, and the city is very pedestrian friendly. Las Ramblas is an area that should not be missed. The Ship: The Emerald Princess emerged from dry dock just prior to our cruise. So much of the public areas were updated and polished. The most noticeable upgrade is the Market Fresh dining area. Other areas of the ship received fresh carpet and some areas were got a fresh coat of paint. We were pleased that the zumba classes were moved from the piazza area. Sports events, competitions, and musical celebrations can get pretty loud. We could clearly hear the dance music in the elevator on the Lido Deck (deck 15). We found several empty bar areas to use as a hideaway for reading, puzzles and light conversation. The destination lectures were fabulous. The expert advice offered during these sessions were invaluable. She had a wealth of knowledge, a great personality, and a direct focus on the important issues. Entertainment: I don't enjoy the musicals and stand up entertainment shows provided on cruise ships. I live in a city where entertainment is the main industry.So I don't attend these shows while cruising. Some people in the audience clearly love them. So I consider myself an anomoly. The ring toss, bag toss, and poolside events appear to be very popular with the majority of cruisers. Since I don't enjoy watching or participating in those activities, I don't criticize them. The ratings scale does not provide N/A options. Dining: The Horizon Court is now called World Market Fresh which features a clean and spacious design with new tables and chairs. The food is appealing, artfully displayed, and makes self service much easier. The section at the rear of the ship featured made-to-order omelets at breakfast and ramen noodle stir fry at noon. The serving lines could be long on those days. At dinner time, those areas at the rear were converted to casually elegant restaurants called Planks and Steamers Seafood which alternated from one night to the next. I don't know the schedule because we dined only once in each venue. They weren't busy so the hostess would seat you without reservations. There was a lot of food included for the $12 upcharge and the food was plentiful and flavorful. It was also nice and quiet. Other dining options that are free, besides World Market Fresh, include International Cafe, and the open deck spots featuring pizza and a hot dog/hamburger grill. The Crown Grill and Share are specialty restaurants, in elegant surroundings, which charge $39 and $29 respectively. There are three main dining rooms (MDR) on this ship. Two feature traditional dining and one features anytime dining. The Anytime Dining option has improved significantly. If you arrive anytime after 7:30pm, you'll be seated expeditiously. If you prefer to eat earlier, I recommend the traditional dining. It might have been a fluke, but it seemed to me that the MDR is as noisy as Market Fresh with clattering of dishes, loud conversations and very little sound absorption. Excursions: In Funchal, Portugal we thoroughly enjoyed the TukTuk Taxi tour. We made reservations prior to departure at http://www.tukxi.pt/, and the driver, Caroline, picked us up right outside the terminal at the pier, right on time. She took us on a 2.5 hour ride through the winding streets of the city where there were very few cars, lots of locals, and some terrific photo ops. We visited the major tourist attractions and she even stopped to pick some fruit and fragrant plants along the way. The cost for 2.5 hours was 52.00 USD (47.00 Euro) and we were extremely satisfied. In Morocco, we selected a Princess excursion that included a visit to the capital city of Rabat because our research indicated that there was not very much to see and do in Casablanca. In both cities, the traffic jams, road construction, and pedestrians made it extremely difficult to move around. Our guide had a very strong accent and the radio communicators were fuzzy and annoying. In Casablanca, we stopped at a mosque and a government building to view non-descript mosaic tiles. There was really nothing else to see. On our way to Rabat,the guide told us that we would enjoy a bathroom break "very soon" which turned out to be after noon. He told us that the acceptable bathrooms along the road were closed for construction. In Rabat, we visited a major mosque with acceptable toilets and we were able to see only the outside of the Royal Palace because, unfortunately, the royal family was in residence. We had lunch, with lots of food, in an upscale restaurant without air conditioning before returning to ship. The rush hour traffic of Casablanca was the most memorable portion of the tour. I don't mean to sound snobby in my assessment of Morocco and I hope to visit again in a couple of years as it will likely be more prepared for western tourism. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it ended up in Barcelona, after visiting the Azores, Madeira, Morocco, Seville, and Malaga. We had cruised on the Emerald a year earlier and were happy to see improvements (it had recently come from drydock). The upgrades in carpet, wall, flat screen TVs, and the buffet and bars on top were good. We were disappointed they had not yet fully implemented the new internet or on-demand TV. The internet was still terrible. I understand they expect to have those upgrades done by August. We had a mini-suite, as we had before. It was the same as before except for the TV upgrade. It was fine. However, the sofa was old, worn, stained and uncomfortable. Time for a replacement! I have loved Princess beds but this one felt too soft. (and I like soft beds)--time for a mattress replacement, I think. We felt food was a bit better than a year earlier. The pizza, source of endless debate was quite a bit better than the year before. Husband's theory is new, hotter pizza oven. It's still not top gourmet quality but was much better than last voyage. We still love the International Cafe. As always, nice tasty snacks and treats. They were even keeping the almond croissants warm in the oven (so much better that way). There is still too much blatant up selling for my taste, although it is reduced from in the past. The cruise tours were excellent. We often stick with Princess because they seem to have great itineraries and this was no exception. I forget her name but there were excellent destination lectures from a British woman, which were broadcast on TV. They were very well-done. The food was extremly good and we really enjoyed our time on board The shows were really good and the entertaiment in the lounges were excellent. We had fun in the CaSSINO . wE THOUGHT THAT WE MIGHT HAVE FOUND THE 6 DAYS AT SEA TOO MUCH BUT WE ACTUALLY ENJOYED IT. Once we reached our first stop we were ready to get off the ship. We took a tour and explored the Azores. The next day was a sera day and a day to rest. Then we reached Funchal and enjoyed exploring. The next stop was casablanca. we had been ther befor and did not like it so we stayed on thbe ship. It was a very relaxing day.Then we wer on to CADIZ and we took a tour to Seville. It was a very interrsting but tiring day. Then was Malaga. Really beautiful we took the Hop on Hop Off Bus and really enjoyed the day. Last stop Barcellona and what a sto.
