We were looking for a one-way travel itinerary and chose a cruise over a one-way air-ticket. It served as a family vacation for 24 days and was worth the experience. The only thing to keep in mind when doing a long crossing is that most of the passengers are retired and that there are not many children on board, however the team at the Mini-Club are fantastic and have an action packed program for every day. This allowed us to have some "Mommy and Daddy" time which was a treat. Dining was good, with a new dish option every night as well as any-time pizza was always a winner with the children. The photo service is fantastic and well worth buying a photo package. The photographers were professional and friendly and produced some fantastic shots. There was a variety of daily activities and the atmosphere was pleasant. We enjoyed our time on board and will seriously consider doing it again. Read Less

My husband and I went on this trip that was special to us we were celebrating our golden wedding anniversary, This was our first Cruise with M.S.C and the calamity’s started at embarkation where we were left in a car park to take our cases and find where we had to go. Next the cabin although clean it was one of the smallest balcony cabins we have been in. The food I couldn’t give one good word for yes I know they have to cater for all tastes, even the pasta wasn’t cooked properly. The shows left a lot to be desired, as you can tell we didn’t enjoy. This is a ship that has been extended cut in the middle and a few more cabins added unfortunately they didn’t add any extra facilities to accommodate these extra cabins so you have to book to see a show, having never had to book a show on any other cruise we have been on we didn’t always remember. We picked this cruise because of the Ports of call, We had 3 days of in Durban before joining the ship. The first port was Reunion followed by Mauritius, Seychelles,Jordan, 2 days thru the Suez canal, On to Greece, Kotor, Split, Ending in Venice. As you can see the ports are the reason we booked the cruise. After reading lots of reviews about MSC, which WHERE NOT ALWAYS GREAT, We decided to book any way. The ship, 2.300 passengers, Not as big as we normally sail on, But big enough. Food,Very poor,In the main Dining room, Very small portions, A rack of Lamb was 2 VERY small chops, 6nights on the run we had the same soup with a different name, Red Pepper which was Yellow ? All based on potato soup. The service was very slow, This was not the fault of the staff waiting on, but the time it took the kitchen staff to serve the food. Twice we decided to eat in the Buffet in the evening, Only 2 mains where available, One was a meat stew, the meat was 75% fat, Unable to eat any of it,The other MAIN was a HOTDOG . If you dont fancy any thing on the Menu we where told there is always a CURRY available, We tried it a few nights, On the last night before Venice, My wife plus an other lady and my self Decided to have the LAMB curry, When it arrived there was no meat only 4/5/ lumps of bone, I asked the MD where is the Lamb, He tried to make a joke of it and said Its not Lamb curry, Its Bone curry, He took it back to the kitchen, I am still waiting for an answer, But we have been home 4 days. You are told that if you want water with you meal, You can buy bottled water at $3 a bottle, Which we did. Until after around 2 weeks in the the cruise, When one Lady on out table asked to see the catering manager due to the number of complaints we had made. We where then informed that you DONT have to buy water, You just ask for a glass of water and you can have as much as you like FREE. Entertainment, All a bit hit and miss, The best show was from the staff, Fantastic. Ports of call, Can not fault any off them, All of them where first class, There was one port which gave concern, Kotor. Kotor is a Fantastic place and this has nothing to do with the port, But it took us 45 mins to get of the ship due to the Angle of the gangway, It was so steep, When asking some of the ships Officers why it was used like that, They told me that they did not know about the tide when the ship docked?. Cruise ships are booked 18/24 months in advance, If they did not know about the water levels when the ship is due, Some one is in the wrong job.As some one who has worked on Cruise terminals for a number of years, THAT gang way would not have been used in THE uk. 4 Days out of Durban . I had been Drinking S.A.Cider, Which was very good, On the 5th day they ran out of it, 5days after leaving port, 3 days before we reached Venice they ran out of Tonic Water, That was the end of the G/T. Think what you like of this review, But this is how it turned out, We have an other cruise booked with MSC NEXT YEAR, But that was booked before we took this one, We have only paided £100 deposit each, Which may be worth loosing. We chose this, our first cruise for two reasons: 1. The rest and relaxation it would afford us and 2. the places we would get to see. We were not disappointed; every place had its own unique history and was a worthwhile visit. The pre-stop talks by Alison were appreciated but not always accurate and lacked practical information for those not doing the organised Excursions. However, that said, the cruise was hugely beneficial from start to finish, with a variety of meal options and food available almost throughout the day. The coffee was disappointing in two ways - ready made was not the best tasting and although Nescafe instant sachets were alternatives, they were not always available. There was never a dull moment for those seeking activities through the day. The gym was well equipped but not monitored that well, and some fitness enthusiasts were just too enthusiastic, hogging more than the permitted 20 mins per item. Disappointingly, I had called MSC before the cruise to check whether or not the ship had a Squash Court because not of all of their ships do have. I was assured that the Sinfonia did have, only to find that this was not so. The Golf Simulator was also in disrepair. Our cabin was adequate although being one of the budget ones and well serviced. Being on the 7th deck we were situated above the Theatre so sometimes the noise of practises or late night entertainment filtered through to our cabin. We found the staff pretty helpful in general especially when we requested the opportunity of offering church services onboard. They went out of their way to provide us with a venue, sound support and media projection (although the dat projector does need upgrading).Thank-you! All-in-all it was a great cruise and our compliments to all crew who made it so enjoyable. Read Less

We saw a cruise that included a return flight for an acceptable price. We wanted to visit family in Europe and celebrate an anniversary. (that was a complete misnomer!) We were cordially received by the staff on-board, but it is overwhelming to be accosted with hard sell on drinks vouchers etc. The cabins were not yet ready, but our cabin steward was a real delight Luciano from Madagascar. He served us really well, clean room, clean linen, always a friendly greeting. Did not leave a tip , no euros available and the exchange rate prohibitave. It would have been so much easier if the cruise payments and prices were in euros and not dollars. An european ship with a european destination should have been. We ate at the cafe del mare a few times, but it was permanently dirty and full. The tables had stains people behaved so badly, and the coffee was not good. The staff were running around trying to cope but sadly were not able. The mealtimes down in il galleone were better. The quality of the food was actually dismal . The head chef should be relieved of his position-- there was no seasoning in the dishes. If we had been presented with the descriptions in the printed menu , we would have been in foody heaven!!! Our waiter Darmawan was struggling with the kitchen and we waited for 2hours before the meal finished. No opportunity to go to an early show. Adrienne our maitre d was really helpful. At breakfast we had a most wonderful waiter, Mark from Philippines. He was jacked up, kept his eyes everywhere, noticed when there was a lack, jumped in and rectified. Served the meals, poured the coffee and all with a smile and a song. The baristas in la baroque were so friendly. The ship's chairs were not comfortable, interior designers must sit and read in a chair before designing and purchasing. The ship ran out of wine, every thing we ordered they did not have, even to get a glass was a problem. And as far as the cocktails, they were mediocre. Onboard arts and crafts was very good with Bob and Irene. The other was disorganised and infantile. The destinations were lovely, but the long long queues to disembark and then back on board, disorganised and chaotic. Why bus numbers were not individually called, when the deck cleared, the next number- instead there was pushing and shoving, people who were ill, coughing and splattering down the stairwell, others worried they would not get off, just as though they hadn't eaten in years. There were obvious maintenance issues, which were being cared for as what seemed possible. Except the light above our dinner table. Never replaced! Believe it or not, I loved the cruise. I did not want to get off. Really not happy at not having a dinner time option. Felt like a second class citizen. Read Less

I wanted to go over the equator by ship and the cruise line I chose was the perfect one. Plus the dates fell on my birthday .. this was awesome. The entertainment was perfect perfect. The food.. good food and for weight watchers there.. you do have some choice. Quite a variety for all. The rooms were very clean and well kept. As for the gym and say daily workout.. it was great. The morning yoga and stretchings were great. I loved them. For those who love running/ jogging there is plenty of space to that. Imagine the morning sea breeze flushing on your face. Awesome experience. The theater was rolling with daily activities. No boredom at all. The casino.. the restaurants, the shops with beautiful prices and discounts with the latest fashions in bags and other accessories.. great stuff. The music played in the club and other pubs was great as well. Lastly the MSC staff are well trained and have good work ethics and have made my trip a home away from home. I’ll surely be packing my bags for the next trip. Read Less

We wanted a LONG cruise and this was it❣️ The embarkation process went smooth. The fact that we could check in online, made it easy The ship is awesome and has everything you can think of Our cabin was very good and we had enough space not to feel cramped. All the food was excellent. The food from the dining experience was good - although the service was slow (but it was not the waiter’s fault). Some of the entertainment was excellent, especially Roelof and the lady concert pianist The artists from the Manhatten Lounge was terrible on the other hand. The service from some of the staff from customer care was not very friendly. Sometimes, some of the staff clearly ignored you while standing in the queue. The ports and shores were beautiful but the excursions were extremely expensive. I would LOVE to travel on a long cruise again Read Less

I liked the way that the whole entertainment was involved and everyone in the team played an important role. The food was good as well as the bar service. Cabin was cleaned and serviced to my liking. The cleaning cabin staff did little things extra like, lying out the pajamas and making animals from the towels which was great. The shows were good, except for the classical shows which I felt was not up to the previous standard. The on deck parties were a highlight. The waiter staff in the downstairs dining room were very attentive an tried to please where they could. The captain managed the ship well. The presence of the officers at various times was good. The buffet staff both waiter and food dishing up staff very friendly and helpful. Read Less

We wanted to do a longer cruise. We started in Durban which we knew so only did a half day in Durban. Embarkation and disembarkation at the beginning and end went smoothly however at the different ports it was a little chaotic. When you have more than 4 buses going perhaps you could call two at a time rather than 4. The ship was lovely and clean. Our room which had a big window was spacious and comfortable. The food was very good and was always available. The restaurants were clean and waiters very friendly. I did feel a little sorry for them when the ship was running out of wine within the first 10 days. The waiters took the brunt of the people anger and when asked for the manager he was never available. However saying that they did supply us with more expensive wine that was available that wasn't for the vouchers that we had pre-booked. Entertainment was good and plenty of activities. Found quite a lot on before 10am - breakfast the talks and gym - so we missed a few of the talks which were extremely interesting. Excellent service in the cabin, at the pool and in general the crew was fun and always polite. The excursions were great and very informative. Pity Montenegro and Split were such short stops as they were really beautiful. I would definitely go again in fact trying to decide on the next route. Thank you for a great experinence!! Read Less

Celebration cruise my 70th and my wife's 69th birthdays. This ship was under provisioned for the entire cruise. The following were poor quality, meats, juices, salads, burgers and most of the time no bananas etc. The food on board was poor quality in all dining areas; meat in particular was of the lowest quality and inedible most of the time. There were no sauces or condiment to accompany meat or fish courses. No Sorbet available on the first night and only one type of ice cream although they were listed on the menu. No provision for Lactose intolerant guests, no soya, ice cream, cream, butter and a poor selection of meals and sweets available in all dining areas. I was informed the sorbet even contained milk to cater for the South African guests which was unsuitable for lactose intolerant guests. Soya milk was obtained after a protracted period with some negotiation. This was my 39th cruise and it was the worst I have experienced after 564 days at sea. Served with poor quality beef at the buffet fat inedible, the first portion was all fat, the second portion contained one folk full of meet. I discuss this issue with the restaurant management who conceded the meat served was fat and unsuitable for consumption. Room service was variable sometimes items missing either with food or utensils. Reported health and safety issues at reception the end caps on some of the hand rails on deck 8 outside our cabin were missing with the ends of the tubes exposed which caused scuffs and abrasions whilst trying to pass cleaning carts. I counted 8-10 missing. Although there were approximately 200 missing throughout the ship reported by one of the staff The menus had many items list that weren’t actually available. The poor staff serving the dishes had to report that they weren’t available, this was embarrassing for them and infuriating for the guests. Public areas: The furnishings were well passed there sell by date and uncomfortable in most public areas which were shabby. The theatre was in adequate for the number of guests on board. The booking system had its faults and I found it was difficult to obtain a seat if a show was popular. The theatre seating was poor and the layout caused problems for actually viewing the artists some of which were mediocre. People reserving seats was a problem allowing some guests to arrive minutes before the start of the performance in prime positions which blocked the view of people who had sat in their seats approx. 45 minutes before the show started? The reservation of sunbeds and chairs on open decks was a problem. Often people reserved 2 or 3 items in sunny and shaded areas sometimes on different decks also the reserved items were not used for 3-4 hour periods.I spoke to many people of various nationalities on board and they concur with my observations. We were on a cruise trip "Oppiwater Kunstefees RSG" to Maputo, Portugeuse Island and Pomene on April, 15, 2018. It was for 5 nights to remember for a long time. Although we couldn't get off the boat at Pomene, because of the weather, there were enough to do like watching shows, swimming or just relax and many more. There was a big variety of delicious food to eat. The crew members were very friendly and helpful. We have all we need in the cabin. No shortage at all. They came about 3 times daily to clean up the room. When we left the room and came back all was neat and cleaned. I can't wait for my next trip in December 2018. However unbeknown to us the Op die Water took over there was no entertainment at all in evenings for the English and we were ready to get dressed up every night booked the early dinner so we could go to all the shows etc. so disappointing and I had encouraged all the girls to do the cruise and it was nothing like we were expecting. The service and food was fantastic but sadly not worth all the money we had saved without the entertainment We May as well have booked into a hotel Even the music on the deck was in Afrikaans we had to ask them to please play some English music which did but not for long. Unfortunately we weren’t able to go the island due to big swells. I flew in from the UK and two other girls flew in from Zimbabwe one from Pretoria and the other from Scottburgh. Read Less

We decided in November 2017 it is time to try a cruise and see what it is all about & just went into Pentravel to book. We didn't know it was Oppiwater Festival & we were really surprise about all the show's. The celebs on this cruise were all very friendly & we really enjoyed meeting them all in person. It was just a pity that the travel agent didn't tell us we need to book tickets for all the shows, but we were lucky enough to have gotten some complimentary tickets. We did not go on any shore excursions because we heard that there was no facilities on the Portuguese Islands & because of safety reasons & weather conditions we could not get off at Pomene. It was not a problem for us as there was so much to do on board & we still enjoyed ourselves. We are telling all our friends & family that this should be one of the things on their bucket list to do. We are already planning to go on another cruise hopefully on the new Musica that is coming soon. This was worth every cent we spend from start to finish it was worth it. The service on board is excellent, the food is good, entertainment excellent, cabins comfortable, everything is just perfect, We were also pleasantly surprise at how quick the embarkation & disembarkation process went, the only real problem was with the waiting for parking at Durban harbour, but once you had your parking it was smooth sailing from there on. One other thing the cocktails are amazing. Read Less

It was our first cruise; we thought it was luxurious and senior citizen/disabled friendly - we met old ladies who were over 80 years of age. It inspired us, as one has the idea that after 70 it would be difficult to travel on holidays, etc. but It gave us new hope for our future holidays...! Food was excellent and service outstanding. Thank you! Cabin was cleaned regularly and towels were replaced regularly. Shower curtain a bit irritating while you shower; suggestion: shower door in stead of curtain. Thanks. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly; however we have one complain about our luggage which was taken by another MSC guest after disembarkation. Suggestion: The luggage should be supervised in a better way so that every person make sure that he is collecting his own luggage and not somebody else's. Another complain about Wi-fi; I bought pre-paid data of 2GB, but I was not able to use it, as I was unsure how to go about. I went to the Customer desk and they explained to me, but it still did not work. I have wasted my money, as I did not use even 1MB. Keep up the good work. This is our 3rd Oppiwater trip and we enjoyed each one. Great stuff. The staff is very helpfull and pleasant , specially our dinning room waiter , Warnaya. The embarking has definitely been streamlined from the previous trips . The rows kept going at a steady pace. No waiting. It is quite something to handle so many people ( 3000) so well and efficient. The vibe on the ship was as good as always with everybody in a real holiday mood and the entertainers and music just added fuel. The cocktails were great and thanks to the drinks packets , which is a good deal, one could enjoy enough of that. The only complaint is that the wine stock was low , so the selection was limited and you had to take what you get. But the overall experience was still great - so much so that we will most probably be on this trip again , next year, just on the bigger MSC Musica. Read Less

And thwen pomene all the cruises go there but most of the time people cant get off due to the wearher so why keep on going there. Worst of all next year they only cruise to pomene not even a stop at the portugese islands this is going to be a huge mistake i would rather stop twice at the portugese islands than never getting off. Then some off the staff is not very friendly at all can hardly understand what you ask that makes it difficult to get things sorted or booked. The pizzas, buffet and restaurant was excellent. The coffee bar was one of our favourite spots. Implement a paperless photo option, maybe desktop stations where guess can purchase a USB and download their own photos. Prints for booked shoots/gala events only. That way you can save paper, and guess don't waste time looking for their photos in an overcrowded space. The entertainment in the one lounge was very average. The cruise was a surprise 60th birthday gift for my husband. He turned 60 on 15 April. When we booked, an additional amount of R750 .00 per ticket was charged for the Oppiwater concerts. We paid our full cruise ticket as well as the additional amount being under the impression the concerts on board would be part of the cruise.Great was our surprise to find that we had to still book tickets for the concerts and that the ship's usual super entertainment program was cancelled in lieu of RSG managing the entertainment? The out come was that we hardly had any entertainment which we could enjoy - which is one of the greatest pleasures on the cruises. Even the open lounges were closed if we did not have tickets for the show? Some of the concerts clashed with the excursions as well? I would like an explanation of what the additional R750.00 we paid with our ticket was for as we had no added benefit - actually had less as we could not enjoy the usual MSC entertainment? We also ordered and paid for a My Cruise video / DVD package only to find it contained nothing of our cruise? There is a short insert of the landing on Portuguese island and when we were on the ship but the rest of the video / DVD shows the various shows from the MSC entertainment team - this is not the entertainment we had while on our cruise? I would like a refund on this as I was under the impression it would feature at least some photos and moments of my husband and myself? And to say it was our cruise but highlight shows from another cruise is false advertising? I will not book again when other groups such as RSG manage the entertainment. The excursion to Inhaca was a bit of a disappointment as we were first of all harassed by some of the local people wanting to take us on the tour and there was not a clear presence of MSC on Inhaca leaving the us at a bit of a loss as what to do. Chose the cruise because it was going to destinations which were favourable. First of all, foor a month of travelling, the luggage allowance was not enough as allowed by the air line. Hotel stay in Durban was excellent. The ship' entertainment was good, although quite short. The entertaining team were friendly and tried their best to get guests involved in activities. Crew were polite. The cabin was satisfactory with enough storage space. Meals- Poor choices, breakfast was the same, the bacon was hard and dry. The choice was limited, if we wanted salmon, we had to go to the restuarant. The service was poor and the waiters sèmed tired and worn out. Lots of the meals were of poor quality. Some were recycled from the buffet lunch to dinner in the restuarants. Presentation was poor. Sometimes the meat were hard and inedible.Sometimes the waiters were embarrased to serve the meal. Water was not served on the table and there was not a choice for tap water until many concerns were raised, afterwhich water was served. Bought a wine package, most of the wines we were told were not available. Had to get the wine from the bar and dring it to the table. Soon after, these same wines became available. Hygiene was not enforced, people were entering the restuarants inappropriately dressed from the pool area. Lots of people had colds and coughs and they were alllowed to use communial areas without taking preautions to stop the spread of the virus. Going on shore excursions was very disorganised. Long queys and delays, causing us to lose valuable shore time when it was already short stops. In Venice, organisation was very poor. Immigration should have boarded the ship and clear people rather than us coming out, them reentering again to join the water taxi. Communication was poor during these times Public areas were dirty and smelt of urine. Stains were noticeable in the day time on the seats. They were cleaned during the trip. i chose the cruise to spend quality time with my family.I cannot stop telling people about the good restaurants and entertainment. will do these trips over and over again. telling people daily about cruising with MSC.i am glad to have taken four of my family members and friends on this cruise. we enjoyed the island a lot especially the warm water stream.i enjoyed the live entertainement a lot. the casino was a big plus for me.not too shabby.those times i spend in the casino the younger ones danced the night away. the diferent pubs was of best quality. the midnight snacks made the younger generation very happy. never a dull moment.the staff was exceptional.we realised they must be tired but never heard complaints.for sure they work very hard but ajways smiling and friendly. the pools and jacuzi is also exceptional. the activities for kiddies is amazing. lots for them to do. wiill right a good review next time. will ask more people to join. one word awesome Read Less

The information i was told and given was that there would be entertainment......not told it was in afrikaans and no english shows!!!!!! I often called and never told the truth....the music on deck 11 was afrikaans!!!! NO WAYS DO I FEEL I WAS GIVEN VALUE FOR MONEY I WAS HAPPY AND I BROUGHT 4OTHER PEOPLE WITH ME 2 FROM ZIMBABWE SO THEY WERE ALSO VERY DISAPPOINTED.....I unfortunately dont have a good review to give of MSC CRUISES I went to the first island but apparently could not go to the 2nd island pamento island??? Due to the weather which i am led to believe was not true.....i heard the crew talking as i was getti g onto the boar to the 1st island saying they had planned already we would not be going to the pomento island......too expensive for mac cruises they could rather pocket the money!!!!?????? It is costly to get the people to the island and get the food there too......wow i was shocked and hurt by this info from overhearing the crew talk.... I have since been told by other people's experience that the entertainment has gone down....irs too expensive for mac to accommodate the entertainers on board and give the passengers good loyal service is something of the past and lead their customers up the wrong belief and truths...... I am so very disappointed and trust and want to believe msc is not screwing people over.....but the negative from other previous clients who have been on your ship trips lead me to think i have also been taken for a ride...... I look forward to hearing from msc to arrange for fair compensation for a trip i have saved up for over 3 years to have an experience of a life time for my 60th birthday on board with msc but came home leaving a very sour taste in my mouth thinking twice to make plans for my next trip with msc cruises. Kind regards JenJ Read Less

Chosen: short trip, able to fit into a tight schedule. Was it worth it though? Hell freaking No! The food was sub par and often leftovers were recycled. I have no issue with leftovers, wastage is awful. But honestly too water down baked beans 3meals in a row was crazy and disrespectful to baked beans and paying customers. The apparently free water and juices were closed most all of the time. Beware of the restaurant bookings! You may book 1st sitting and end up with 2nd. Which too people with kids is very annoying. They do not provide you with sufficient information and are quite irritable and no patience when you ask your Q. If your diet is varied then you're okay. But if you are hindu or vegan, theres not many options. The only truly edible item was the 3cheese pizza. They do have a variety of tea flavours, however no herbal teas or hot chocolates, and very limited amount of decaf coffee, that was not replenished. Overall quality of food was very poor. Will not recommend to anyone. Read Less
