Sadly, NCL currently has the market cornered when it comes to Hawaiian cruises. No complimentary transportation to or from the airport to the ship. $30 for a 5 mile taxi ride each way. From the minute you step on the ship you are charged for something. As if paying over $4000 for a room is not enough for them, they also hit you for an additional $15.67 per person PER day for "services and fees". Our room was supposed to be cleaned daily. It was not. They made the bed. The sheets were to be changed every 2 days. They were not. They changed them once. There were enough cheerios under our bed for a meal, and apparently glass cleaner is an unknown substance here. Small hand prints on the mirrors were there from day 1. (probably from the same ones who left the Cheerios) Greasy head prints on the mirror behind the bed. Mirrors in the elevators and deck windows were filthy. The food was fair, depending upon where you ate. They actually charge you for internet, and a 20% gratuity fee automatically on every drink and food purchase you make. Poor service? Too bad. You are paying that gratuity regardless. Drinks are over priced and weak. Alcoholic drink packages, if you wanted to purchase them, were $100 per day per person and all adults in the same room were required to purchase it. Off shore excursions were very expensive, and were also hit with taxes, even if you prescheduled them prior to the cruise. . Boarding and deboarding for these excursions were very chaotic and unorganized. Doing construction on a door during breakfast hours in one of the buffet rooms. Couldn't this be done at night when the dining area was closed? The workers live on the ship. It's not like they have 9-5 hours. They closed down the one and only popcorn maker because "they needed the outlet to run their power tools". We saw a worker changing the lights above the state rooms wearing a mask. The insulation he pulled out was left in front of our doors in the hallway for a couple of hours before it was finally swept up. Again, in the busy middle of the day when people are tracking it throughout the ship. As a fare well gift, they were actually charging people a $20 fee to print their airline tickets. Staff was pleasant for the most part and work very long hours. When another cruise line starts offering these Hawaiian cruises, NCl is going to suffer dramatically. We literally met not one person on this ship who said that they would ever use this cruise line again. Read Less

Was very excited for this cruise and being able to see all of the different islands. Embarkation was very smooth, and we were able to get into our rooms with 3 hours of getting on the boat. Luggage also showed up early evening which was impressive. I do not believe that the stewards had enough time to turn around rooms, as room was not as clean as we were used to when we first arrived, however, got better the next day and coming days. Steward was always very nice when we saw him in the hallway. When we first arrived, the balcony had not been cleaned (hair was left, along with sand/dirt). The one main reason I am rating this experience less than average was because of the food. The price for this cruise is significantly more expensive than others (Caribbean), but the food was beyond disappointing. Each meal in the Aloha Cafe left little to be desired. Breakfast was identical each morning and lunch had a few changes, but overall the poor quality remained the same. We had dinner in two specialty restaurants and the Skyline and Liberty in the evenings. Our experience has been that the seated dining rooms have consistent top quality food, but even those dining rooms were below average in taste. We ate at Cagney’s steakhouse on the last evening, I had the Fisherman Platter and my husband had Prime Rib. The starters and salad were the best meal of the entire cruise, but main course fish and steak were again below average. Steak was dry and bland, and fish had a very fishy frozen taste to it. Moderna Dining was consistent across the meal, and the most satisfying and consistent across the board for the entire dining experience. The entertainment was average, we spent most of our evenings in the Wine Bar and Pink’s Champagne Bar. The Wine Bar had a great selection and the sommelier was extremely knowledgeable. If you are a wine drinker, this is a must do experience if on this ship. Pink’s has live music every night, which was better after a few beverages. The other significant item we noticed was the staff. In uniform, there was an instance that a staff member came through and yelled to another staff member across the Gold Rush Saloon to a female staff member, “How do you like your eggs? Fertilized?!” My husband and I were the only ones in the dining area and I’m sure he didn’t realize as he was walking through, but unprofessional while in uniform. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to see all of the Hawaiian Islands and take our son and his family on an amazing family vacation. Having been on several other cruises, the ship was very disappointing. I was told at booking that there were no cabins that would accommodate 7 people so I booked a suite with an adjoining cabin. Upon arrival they wanted to split up my family. Those booked in the suite got extra privileges and the 3 booked in the adjoining cabin were separated off from our party. Until I complained, they didn't even want to let us check-in together. And then, to find out the ship actually had two bedroom family suites that would accommodate 8 .... I was not a happy camper! The spa was very disappointing. Not enough people to make getting appointments very easy. And the service in the dining rooms ,.... Oh, don't get me started. Everywhere I went I wanted to tell people to just smile. At least that would make me feel like you enjoyed your job and wanted to be there. When I booked the cruise I was told that the kids would be given kids menus in the specialty dining restaurants but I wasn't told that it was the same menu for all of them ... hamburger, hotdog or chicken nuggets. Very embarrassing to ask my grand-daughters to eat that while we were enjoying our meals, especially the Teppenyaki. Shame on me for expecting restaurant appropriate kid menus. like similar options with maybe smaller portions???? AND the upcharge for your kids to eat is $39.95 EACH. They charged us $120.00 plus automatic 18% gratuity for a 6, 8 and 10 year old to eat at the Teppenyaki I will say that the service at Moderno Brazillian Restaurant was excellent and our last night at the Liberty Dining Room was good. Other than that, smile people!! It can't be that bad!! And the time it takes to get served .... crazy long. We actually gave up and started eating at the Aloha Buffet. You just can't get young kids to sit and wait that long to get food in the dining rooms and restaurants. Because we had a suite, we had a butler for the guests in the suite and she was amazing! She didn't separate us off from each other and took care of all of us. For our kids, it was their first cruise so other than the time it took to get food service in the dining rooms, they thought it was amazing. We booked on NCL because we had been on a cruise on the Getaway last year and had a great time and great experience. This time, not so much! It seemed like the attitude was "hey, it's Hawaii, what more do you want"? Read Less

The NCL Pride of America is the only American based ship that stops on four Hawaiian islands, without a stop out of the country, ie, a Polynesian Island. This means the ship has different "rules". There is no casino, the drink packages are overpriced, everything has a service charge, it is an all American crew, and all American chefs. The cruise departs from Honolulu and stops in Maui for two days, Hilo, Kona, Kauai for two days and then back to Honolulu. For reference, the cruise cost us $7,100 for two people. If you did what we did with a land only trip, you would spend close to $13,000 without airfare. If you go into the cruise being aware of its deficiencies, then it's easier to look past them and enjoy the trip. The port in Honolulu is clean and was easy to navigate. Took an Uber to the port, dropped us off right at door. We used a porter to get our bags to security and waited in a small line to get on the ship. I think going later in the day, after 3pm helped with the lines and time for embarkation. Debarkation was a little less organized as a lines formed on the sixth deck to get off the trip. Took about 30-45 minutes. The ship as a whole is old and run down. It needs a lot of updating. Due to the fact that this cruise is routinely sold out, it seems NCL doesn't think it's necessary to update the ship. There are two dining rooms, a buffet, a 24-hour diner and five specialty restaurants. All were mediocre, except Cagney's Steakhouse. That was by far the best meal of the trip. All the stops were fine. We recommend renting your own car and doing things on your own. The costs of the excursions is high. We also recommend finding your own Luau. The one run by the ship ran our of food according to reports and was drawn out. Finally, keep an eye on your bill. They nickel and dime you for everything on that ship, including 29$ for an umbrella and 5$ for a poncho. Read Less

I travel with my mom and brother every summer and we've sailed on the Norwegian Cruise Line approximately 6 times before to Alaska, Italy, the Baltic Sea, the Caribbean, and the East Coast and we've enjoyed our experiences and recommended NCL to our family and friends. We loved the Hawaiian Islands itinerary and the excursions, however, our experience with the Pride of America was the worst we've had so far so that was disappointing and something future cruisers should be aware of. We purchased the same type of balcony room that we've stayed in in the past (the best balcony room you can get without moving into the private concierge category) and the room and bathroom/shower were the smallest we've ever been in. The balcony was the best one we've had so far - we loved the 2 lounge chairs and 2 regular chairs w/footrests - but the room itself was so small that my mom and I couldn't move around in the room at the same time. This was our first time having a stand-up shower with a shower curtain rather than a shower door. Fortunately, the curtain had rods in it so it didn't get sucked into the shower and cling to us, but the shower was so small, that we could barely turn around in it. The toilet system was the worst we've ever experienced on Norwegian or any other cruise line. Our toilet stopped working in the middle of 3 different nights where it suddenly stopped flushing. This interrupted much-needed sleep and relaxation each time it happened. The first time it happened, I thought I was doing something wrong even though everything was working earlier. I tried not to wake my mom as I tried to get the toilet to flush, but finally had to turn the light on and call the front desk to let them know about the problem waking my mom in the process. They fixed the problem within 30 min. The same thing happened again another night - that time I realized it wasn't anything I was doing wrong, but my mom still woke up when I called the front desk to let them know about the problem. We waited up about an hour waiting for the system to start working again. I complained to the front desk and was told that someone in our area was putting foreign objects into the toilet which clogged the whole system in our area and resulted in our group of toilets being turned off so the problem could be fixed. The front desk staff were apologetic and thanked us for our patience. On our final night, the toilet stopped working for a 3rd time at 1 AM - again disrupting our sleep as I called the front desk again and waited for the toilet to start working again. This experience not only interrupted our sleep 3 out of the 7 nights of our cruise, but it also made us anxious every time we used the bathroom b/c we didn't know if it was going to actually flush or if it would suddenly stop working and become unavailable (and disgusting) for the next person. It would have helped to have been forewarned about the tiny size of the stateroom and the bathroom/shower. The website gives dimensions of the room overall, but there aren't specific dimensions for the room and bathroom/shower. Photos of the spaces would have been even more helpful. The ship signage was also incorrect. I told the front desk about the misleading signage after I tried to find the workout room. One of the signs had an arrow pointing in the wrong direction making it frustrating to find the room. I had to ask 2 different employees for directions to find it. Later, we looked for the Hawaiian Culture area that was advertised on the Norwegian website and that was posted on the ship signs. We followed the signs that didn't lead to anything (they led to Pink's Champagne Bar) and asked multiple crew members for directions. We were finally told that the Culture Center had been removed and wasn't on the ship anymore. That was another complete waste of time and disappointing. Placing a little tape over the signage and removing the information from the web page would have easily solved that problem. We've enjoyed our other experiences on Norwegian and we want this company to continue to do well. As I mentioned earlier, we've recommended Norwegian to our friends and family, but we cannot recommend the Pride of America to anyone. We were extremely disappointed with the room size, signage, and the unreliable toilets. We hope this was isolated to the Pride of America which didn't live up to its name, but we are now very wary of possibly having the same experience on another ship. To end on a positive note, we've enjoyed the other ships we've sailed on. The Hawaiian Islands itinerary was excellent as were the shore excursions. Our balcony was the best one we've experienced, the free drink package was excellent, and the food was delicious. And we love the Latitudes program - especially priority boarding at the platinum level! Read Less

This was supposed to be a dream trip for our family of 7.I went all out! Balcony rooms for everyone, beverage pkgs (they tax every drink but don’t tell you this!), specialty dining, etc. First day there was water in our hall, not in our room, but I walked to our room and our door was wide open with all our stuff to see. The lady was rude. Second, I was napping and someone knocked on our door and I told them I was in the room, suddenly a strange guy opens our door and said he needed to do maintenance on our balcony! He said he’d come back later. I’ve never been on a ship where so many strangers can enter your room! Also, they were doing constant painting, oiling, pulling up carpet, etc during the cruise.I wish we had gone to Alaska instead! Staff unfriendly. Also, you do not spend a full two days on each island. One day on Maui and then the second day you have to be on board by 2 pm. Big Island one day in Hilo, back on ship by 3, go to Kona overnight, have to be back on ship by 2:30, go to Kauai one day there, second day back on ship by 2 pm. It’s very deceiving. Oh, and get Uber, Lyft or a taxi to take you places. Fraction of the cost! Pearl Harbor is FREE to the first 1300 people! The cruise ship will charge you per person! Not impressed for the $25,000!!!! We chose this cruise as a way to sample the Islands without the hassle of Airport suffles. EMBARCATION. Sooth and efficient, we were directed to a Suite waiting Lounge and had our checkin performed very quickly. Following check in we were escorted to the escalators and told to proceed to the ship, We lined up along with all other passengers with no direction for Priority Boarding, until we stumbled upon a line that was apparently for Suite Guests, nobody had bothered to inform us of this line. Once on Board we were directed to Cagney's for our lunch, which was nice.' DINNING we dined in the two main restaurants on two separate occasions, The food quality was fair at best, and only warm and lacked flavour. The wait staff were not attentive and I noticed that many wore dirty aprons, not a great impression for food service. We dined twice using room service and again the food was only warm and lacking flavour, with no condiments provided or appropriate silverware. We Dined only once in a specialty Restaurant East Meets West, the Food here was a little better here, but nothing to rave about, the service was a lot better, but you would hope this was the case as an extra charge is applied here. We ate twice in the Main Buffet Aloha Cafe, usual mass produced food without any flare or taste, with the exception of the Hot Dogs. We ate at the Cadillac Diner for Lunch on a couple of occasions and the HOT Dogs were good there also but the English Fish and Chips were very Greasy Fish and American style french fries ( not english style at all, to add to this disgusting food the Malt Vinegar was only 10% Vinegar and 90% water, if I wanted water on my Chips I would have done so. BAR SERVICE The bar staff were uninterested in providing service, on a number of occasions I found the Bar staff watching the sports on the TVs and not worrying about the customers, additionally when I asked for a specific cocktail A Mango Daiquiri I was looked upon as if I had ordered something they had never heard of and made comments around they would do there best and how good they were making drinks. this happened at a number of Bars. Prices for drinks were outrageous as an example.I ordered a single Malt whisky on ice, and was charged USD$19.95 + Tax Plus + Gratuity now I understand that Taxes and Gratuities are standard when cruising, particularly in US based ships, but he base price for the Whisky at $19.95 was more than double compared to buying the same thing on Ovation of the Seas only 3 days prior where I paid $8.50 + Garturity & No taxes. BUTLER AND ROOM ATTENDANT The room attendant Lucica was absolutely brilliant any request was dealt with quickly and without expectation of reward, When we first went to our room she greeted us warmly and showed us the amenities and features of the room and advised us that our Butler Georgia would be along soon to introducer herself. Well Georgia did arrive some time later and introduced herself and asked if we wanted to have her unpack our luggage, to which we said no, I didn't want someone going through my underwear. When we did ask her to arrange for some room service we were informed that we should advise her at least 24hrs in advance so she can prepare. she took our order and after approximately 30 minutes the door bell rang and she let herself in. Apparently not wanting to wait for us to answer the door ( This happens every time she came to our suite Very inappropriate). Anyway she walks in with our dinner and as we had no table in our suite she places the food on the coffee table and lounge at the foot of the bed and leaves the silverware still wrapped in a serviette on the table and leaves, This is not butler service and room service attendant could do this. We find there is insufficient silverware provided and no condiments or bread and butter. Surely these are standard things a Butler would ensure are available. Our Butler did not provide any particular service when ever she came into our suite she would blow herself kisses in the mirror, she appeared to only be nice to solicit a tip at the end of the cruise In the End we went to extraordinary lengths to avoid her as we found her demeanor to be obnoxious. SUITE BENEFITS We had a Butler? We had free inhouse movies and we got to eat in Cagney's for Breakfast and Lunch No Internet No speciality dining No suite guest lounge with canapes and drinks in the afternoon Pay extra for a suite and get almost nothing for it apart from a larger room. DISEMBARKATION Bags Packed and left outside our room the last night onboard, on the Disembarkation day we proceeded down to the Gangway and were directed off the ship very quickly and efficiently our luggage was waiting for us at the appropriate location and we were off the ship and in a Taxi within 30 minutes of leaving our cabin , a very quick and professional experience. IN SUMMARY: I would recommend this trip if you want to sample some of the islands of Hawaii without .having to do the airport suffel. Would I recommend this as a cruise , Definitely not. as the title states its a Ferry service. Would I do it again NO Was it Value for Money NO Was there good service IN General NO but there were exceptions Read Less

There is no better introduction to Hawaii than this cruise around the islands, and NCL must know this so they run this wonderful itinerary on a poorly rehabilitated ship. Everywhere I looked I saw rust, cabin toilets broke down and guest services, while they talked a good game, only seemed to half care. Noise complaint about adjacent cabin was countered with earplugs and chocolate covered strawberries. Food was only fair and even premium restaurants lacked what one would expect on a cruise like this one. The pool deck is small and crowded and deck service was lacking. With all that said, it still was one of the most amazing cruises I have ever been on but only because of the itinerary and not much to do with NCL. Excursions offered by NCL were good but there are better offered from the many other excursion operators. The pre-cruise hotel, Park Shore Waikiki was in a primo location but is not a food hotel as it lacks amenities and is in need of an upgrade. Read Less

My basis for comparison, while i have been on over 40 cruises, was a cruise on The NCL pearl just 3 weeks prior, so memory of expectations wasn't distorted by time. as a Platinum member, had to request and fight for what the fall over themselves promising you to get you n board. Whole experience has really soured me on NCL going forward. In addition, the cancelled a scheduled stop in Kona, "technical issues" and rather than extend Hilo, we went to our next port a day early, with no offerings of shore excusrions or anything to do, with a docking a good mile from anything, for a port we were already going to be in for 2 days anyway - now 3. We had a group of 12 adults that wanted to see the Hawaiian Islands. The itinerary of the NCL Pride of America looked good and we got a decent deal. After getting on board we were surprised at the lack of amenities on the ship compared to other cruise lines. We were also completely disappointed in the quality of the food in the main dining room. We thought that maybe they were trying to force us to use the pay per meal restaurants on the ship? My wife has a shellfish allergy and the food she received from the chef was awful. I think that NCL has completely let this ship go to pot. The service from the staff was also lacking. I guess poor leadership is reflected by the staff. It seemed like they got our money and now we were just trapped on the ship. Be prepared to be underwhelmed. Read Less

This was my 7th cruise, first with Norwegian. Food was just average, paid extra for Brazilian Steak House evening and waited forever for my drink and it took 15 mins to get a plate so I could be served. As we left the restaurant, realized they had not even received all the meat options. Service was S L O W! Meat had little taste and wasnot worth the extra cost. Pool and deck service was zero, no one came around the entire cruise to take drink orders by the pool. Seemed like a lot of the crew was new, like it was their first cruise. The cruise line charges you a flat fee for the tips. I felt the crew was just doing a job, unlike other cruises where crew bend over backwards for you and are super friendly. This may have something to do with the all American crew of this crew. Unlike other cruises, foreign crew members are making money to send home to families, so going the extra mile to get a good tip is a great incentive. Entertainment was average at best. China, the Hawaiian Ambassador, on the ship was great. Her Leui making and hula classes were fun. I picked up my alcohol bought during a port at the end of the cruise and they gave it to me in a used McDonalds bag. Uncool. Some of the entertainment crew clothes didn’t fit and looked like they were squeezed into their outfits, unprofessional looking. The ports were beautiful and fun, but Norwegian can take no credit for that. Wouldn't take another cruise with Norwegian. Read Less

We chose this cruise as the best way to see a variety of the Hawaiian Islands. SHIP - old, but recently renovated. CABIN - very small for a balcony room, clean DINING - food was good and what I would expect, not anything over the top, other than specialty restaurant - Cagneys, which was fantastic. ENTERTAINMENT - great comedian and magician, DJ was really good as was the entertainment in the Pink Champayne Lounge ACTIVITES - not much going on, we missed the music on deck all the time and the deck parties we have experienced on other cruise lines. SERVICE - it was seriously horrible. We have cruised 10 previous times (none with Norwegian) and have never had to search out someone to bring poolside drinks or assist us in a diningroom, or answer questions. This ship is completely different. The people working on this ship acted like it was a complete imposition for them to assist you. Even when tipped, no appreciation, nothing. In the Liberty Dining Room, we had to go find someone to fill our water, we filled our own wine from a bottle we purchased for dinner and the waiter actually slammed the coffee carafe in from of one of the ladies dining at our table as she had requested that he return with coffee. One night we were asked if we were ready for dessert and had not been served our entree yet. Many people were talking about how horrible the service was. I heard a lady ask a member of the crew - what is wrong with the morale on this ship? Several previous Norwegian cruisers on the ship told us not to judge Norwegian by this ship as they have had wonderful experiences on other Norwegian cruises, pretty sure we will not try again. PORTS AND SHORE EXCURSIONS - ports are beautiful and we booked our excursions with outside vendors, they were also beautiful. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was the only cruise around the Hawaiian islands. We purchased our tickets which included 3 benefits, 3 shore excursion discounts, 3 dinners in the specialty dining rooms and free wifi/internet. When we tried to book our shore excursions we were told we did not have any discounts, specialty dining and free wifi/internet. We tried to explain that these benefits were included with our initial purchase but the desk on the ship said they had no knowledge of our benefits. Luckily we had the telephone number of Norwegian Cruise Line's office. After several days and attempts to call them on our cell phone, despite the 5 hour time difference and the reception we connected with them and they said we did have the 3 benefits and they would email the ship. The ship never contacted us that they had received the email but when we went back to the ship's desk they said we did have the 3 benefits and they would include them on our bill. NO APOLOGY OR EVEN AN OFFER OF A FREE ICE CREAM OR DRINK FOR UPSETTING OUR PLANNED EXCURSION AND DINNER RESERVATIONS. WE NEVER DID RECEIVE FREE INTERNET/WIFI. OR A CREDIT FOR THAT. Also I talked to the NCL representative about a balcony upgrade and she suggest cabin 9502. I trusted her and that balcony was the most forward balcony/cabin on the ship and th balcony was completely framed by a 2 foot metal structure cutting out a big portion of our ocean view. The first night of the cruise was extremely rough!!! We also came into port 2 hours late. As I learned later while over hearing a conversation from the crew the ship was having engine problems which we were never made information from the captain. Finally, my husband has celiac disease which make him unable to eat wheat, barley or rye. We made NCL aware of this issue and they assured NCL would take care of him. Because of the issue with the dinners in the specialty dining we had to eat the the buffet. There was no signage on any of the food indicating if they were gluten free so we asked the staff and they also did not know. I registered a complaint to NCL more than 5 days ago and they have not answered me or refunded me for not providing wifi/internet as promised in my contract. This is not a cruise I would recommend to anyone. Read Less

Wanted to see Hawaii; preferred to do our own agenda but ridiculously expensive to island hop, and wanted to avoid the sea days of the other cruise options. The weather caused us to miss Maui entirely - 1/3 of the anticipated stops - surprised to not be able to tender on the second attempt when whale watching boats (smaller than our tenders) were in business under the same conditions. The cancellations led to the sea days we wanted to avoid; we recognize that you do not control the weather but it is difficult to check off this one from the bucket list The ship is older but clean and well kept. Cabins small for the price; our steward was excellent. Dining (Liberty and Skyline) quality was marginal for a major cruise line; the service was friendly but not as polished/trained as we have experienced - the Italian and Bistro specialty restaurants were very good, but the additional charges are the highest we have ever paid in past cruises. The Entertainment was good. Overall service was good with the exception of the Internet - the absolute worst in our experience and outrageously overpriced for anyone needing more. We did private shore excursions and the ones we were able to get to were excellent. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it is the only one that circles the Hawaiian Islands so you don’t have to spend the majority of your week’s vacation time at sea. Norwegian was also recommended by a couple of my friends who travel on the line yearly but only in the Caribbean area. When I told them we booked a mini-suite, they started telling me all about the Haven on the ships they had been on. I was told you get your own restaurant with dedicated staff. You get your own pools and hot tubs that only haven members can use so they aren’t crowded. Your even had your own bars. When we got to the ship, we were told that the ship was too small to have a Haven (by the Concierge that was giving us our introduction speech in the Haven waiting area). We didn’t have a designated dining room so as a replacement they were giving free breakfasts and free lunches to Haven customers at Cagney’s Steakhouse. (Remember that the ship was in port every day so the only days we got the free lunch was the first day while we waited for our rooms and the last day because we were leaving port early. The rest of the day we were out on excursions.) For dinner it was recommended that we PURCHASE specialty dining packages. Apparently, the specialty dining needed due to lack of an exclusive restaurant wasn’t included in our $5,599 PER PERSON guest fare. If we wanted drinks on deck after we got back to the ship each evening, we had to go to the overcrowded and understaffed bars with everyone else who didn’t pay for or expect the Haven amenities. We booked a room that said it had a whirlpool tub. When we got to the room it turned out the tub was the same size as a standard household shower tub. They added jets to both ends of the tub and added in arm rests inside the tub which made the tub even narrower than a regular tub. Definitely not worth the extra we paid expecting a decent whirlpool tub. The crew on the ship were very friendly and helpful. The bar crews did as well as anyone could hope with as woefully understaffed as they were when we were leaving port. The restaurant wait staff was very knowledgeable, skilled and courteous. The concierge and butler did a great job especially when dealing with all the headaches the last minute dining reservations created. The Big Island Spectacular and Botanical Garden tours were excellent. The other tours we had were okay mainly because the tour guides were very good. It’s a shame such a fine crew and nice vacation destination were so badly tainted by the scam that Norwegian is perpetrating by selling “Haven” fares on a decidecdly non-Haven ship. This is most definitely the last time we will ever go on Norwegian. As a final note, and one that cements in my mind that Norwegian knows how bad the “Haven” room fares actually are, we have yet to receive ANY communication from them after departing the ship over four full days ago. We never complained while on the ship so there would be no way they would know we would give a bad review unless everyone gives this cruise bad reviews. A cruise company that does not try to reach out to a first time customer who paid for high end rooms is trying to hide something. Read Less

Selected this ship for the itinerary. I did not read any reviews for the Pride of America - NCL prior to the trip, but decided to check them out upon my return. After reading many of the poor reviews, I had to agree with many of those less than satisfactory comments. As a seasoned cruiser with 15+ different ships/lines, this is the first time I felt I needed to write a review of my own less than favorable observations/experiences. We got on the ship early only to be told that the cabins were not ready and they called floors as they were done. Ship - old. There were odd overly large game pieces of chess and checkers on deck 7. OK, no one ever played these and the pieces were cumbersome to walk around. Nearly face planted trying to get around those several times. Cabin - everything was miniature and window was cloudy and hard to see through. Minimal cleaning by cabin steward. I never heard a vacuum when walking by cabins being “cleaned.” Steward also robbed us of three hangars throughout the trip - taking my husband’s shirts off of them and hanging them loosely on a hook inside the door of the closet. We are thinking he did this for the toweled animals he hung (with our hangars) in the room. (We never got those hangars back and we did not ask.) Steward tried to be friendly but he was almost too obtrusive, and even knocked on cabin door at 745 AM on last morning to tell me that I should be leaving the ship now... Dining - buffet choices limited and food did not taste very well. The “special” steak and shrimp dinner was a well-done greasy minute steak and the shrimp was tiny shrimp cocktail. Staff picking up plates and refilling utensil holder were robotic and not very personable. Entertainment - comedian and magician were good. Toby Beau (band) was very entertaining. Broadway dance shows mediocre. Pool - bar staff service was slim to none - servers disappeared early afternoon - on your own to get your drinks after that. No monitoring by any staff of the hot tubs where a diapered toddler less than 1 year was allowed in the water with the parent for hours on end. I did not go in the hot tubs after seeing this. Halfway through the cruise my family caught the hacking cough illness going around the ship - even with the washy wash ladies best efforts. If you are a smoker, they have one of the best areas reserved for you. It is at the Waikiki bar on 13th floor - spaciousness, tables, chairs, a pool, and the bartenders up there were the friendliest of all the staff. Spa area was nice - did pay for one service. Fitness room looked nice - did not use it. This was my second and last NCL cruise. The only thing this ship has that you can not put a value on is the itinerary. Did not pay for the excursions - used the transportation provided by the individual islands (hoppa on and hoppa off buses - free!) Read Less

The stuff you need to know: Embarkation is easily one of the WORST I have ever seen having done many Alaska, Mexico, Med and Carib cruises on all lines. Bottleneck at security and at the NCL check-in counter, where they ask you all the same questions you already handled in the pre-board questionnaire, then require a separate credit card for each room even though we had already linked a single credit card for multiple rooms, then each agent has to walk over to a bin to locate your card. Ridiculous. ADVICE: Show up at 3pm and avoid the absolute incompetence. Ship: any nice touch you have seen in any TV commercial for a cruise ship... the POA doesn't have it. I'm not asking for a rollercoaster, but the "mini golf" is literally a 10sq ft carpet with some metal bowls for holes stolen from the kitchen. Imagine that kind of low-cost crowd pleasing effort that NCL has avoided... and you have the POA. Another example is that- despite the recent drydock renovation- they seem to have avoided replacing the windows along the main walking decks, like 5 & 6. It looks like someone tried buffing the windows and ended up scraping them so badly that you can barely see out... 100s of windows. Complete headscratcher... its a cruise, of Hawaii... people might want to look out the window. Port area: as many will report, the Kahului port area is a dump, and the port agents make it worse by not allowing any convenience for personal pickup/dropoff of passengers. Tons of passengers rent cars on Hawaii port-of-call, and most cruise passengers are older. But getting the rental car anywhere close to the passenger pickup/dropoff is next to impossible. Why not make this an easy thing? And local Hawaiians working the Maui security areas could get reminded about the "Aloha spirit". Could NCL spend a tiny bit of money and get some local artists to paint some murals on the side of the ugly warehouse walls that they dock next to (Hello Lihue, looking at you)? Food: Buffet is above average, main dining room food and service was below average. Cooks could not get the steak cooked to order to save their lives. So disappointed that we went to the specialty restaurants for the second half in order to have the dinners be a complete disaster. Le Bistro was solid, good tenderloin but duck and creme brule cannot be recommended. Tappenyaki made an effort, but you get quantity more than quality here. NCL website advertises John Adams coffee bar as "complimentary" which seemed too good to be true... and it was. They put the same pastries out in the morning as the buffet has, and call that the "complimentary" part - so said the barista. Literally everything else was a charge. Sad... just a few little things that could be improved that would bring this cruise experience up to par with other lines, and NCL doesn't do it. Overall, you are on this particular route for multi-Hawaii stops. You could do it with island hopping airlines, still see the same stuff and rent the same car... but you think the cruise would combine the convenience and the service of a cruise ship. Thus you are willing to pay a premium price (POA is not cheap) and settle for a small ship, hoping for good service. But you will get a small ship with no features and not so good service. Concept is good, NCL execution misses. Comedian Michael Somerville was the lone standout. I would recommend that you take the same money and do island hopping on your terms. The flights, hotel, rental car and restaurants will end up being better service for the same price or cheaper- and on your terms. Read Less

Had wanted to see the Hawaiian islands and liked the itinerary this cruise offered. The Hawaiian Islands were beautiful and well worth seeing but the experience we had on the cruise ship was terrible. Food was of poor quality for majority of our dining experiences and was overcooked and flavourless . the only 2 exceptions were Cagneys steakhouse and the Brazilian restaurant where the food was good. We had purchased the dining package but you had to make sure you made reservations early in your trip or either couldn't get in or had extremely late times available. Even with the restaurants that were free you needed to have reservations or would have up to an hour wait to get a seat. This was never communicated you by the ship. The actual service in the restaurants was excellent though. Prices on the ship for drinks and water were excessive and had to watch your charges as 2 times we were charged double for our drinks. Thank goodness we had found out before we left that you could bring you own wine on board for a corkage fee of $15 per bottles this made the ship experience more tolerable. If you are bringing on your own wine each port handles it differently so be aware. Again something that was never communicated to us. The service at guest services was TERRIBLE the worst I have ever experienced in my 50 plus years of travelling. Shore excursions were extremely expensive and service at the shore excursion desk was also terrible and non informative. There was poor information provided about your stops in port so if you want to have an idea of the islands do your research prior as don't expect Norwegian to be helpful. The shore excursions we did do were extremely poorly organized and again could have waits of over an hour to get off the boat. the actual excursion once you were off were very good but you could certainly book similar excursions on your own that were excellent quality. For example booked a tour on Kauai from ALEX's tour which was excellent. He met the ship in Kona and booked people for Kauai. The one excursion that you would likely have to book through the cruise ship is the Luau on Kauai and this is very worth seeing, one of the best Luau's I have ever been to. Just be prepared for long wait times and disorganization by Norwegian to get you there. You can't book this on your own as the night is set up for cruise passengers only. The pool and hot tub area are small for the amount of people and poorly maintained. The cabin is extremely small and outdated , we even had duct tape on our door around the latch to the balcony. Plumbing was slow and talking with fellow passenger they had the plumbing in their cabin quit and it took crew about 8 hours to fix it. Bring your own shampoo and conditioner as they provide a mix of shampoo/conditioner in the cabin which was separated so didn't get any conditioner. The itinerary was good for this cruise but if have any other way to see the islands do not take this cruise!! If you do choose to go, choose a cabin with balcony on the port side as get to view the Napali coast from your room which is beautiful. My partner and I have traveled fairly extensively in the past and in total have been on 5 previous cruises with very good experiences. This cruise by far was the worst travel experience we have both ever encountered and would NEVER consider Norwegian cruise lines again. Read Less

Definitely the worst cruise we’ve been on. Staff were not as friendly or helpful as I would have expected. Youth program leaders seemed disinterested in attempting to keep children (especially younger ones) happy or wanting them to stay in their area. They would rather parents not drop them off at all. Food, especially in the main dining rooms was hit or miss; mostly a miss. Toilets in the stateroom and around the ship were in disrepair. Ship wasn’t in great shape all around. You could feel the ship vibrating at times which was not normal. They changed itenerary a day before the cruise to stay in port an extra day for ship maintenance so we missed a day on Maui. A staff member I told about a gentleman bleeding pretty badly on his arm that got in one of the hot tubs went to talk to him but let him stay inside saying the chlorine would take care of it which was a health risk to everyone on board. I really was not impressed with this cruise. If it wasn’t for having our family with us and making memories when we disembarked it would have been much worse. Read Less

Great way to island hop. However, the ship is old with continual problems with the toilets that would not work despite the best efforts of the maintenance crew. In attempts to address the problem the ship was held in port an extra day which robbed us of a day in Maui which was for us a primary reason to travel halfway around the globe on this trip. This problem was not isolated to just a part of the ship, it was everywhere leading to fowl smells, midnight searches for a working public toilet, and ultimately a UTI. Food was mediocre. Specialty restuarants were not worth the money. Beds were very comfortable. The ship has special activities for the kids during Christmas. The entertainment was not that bad. The excursions are very much a variety as there something for everyone, but you do have to book early as they sell out. Be aware that it rains a lot on the islands which will impact the excursions. Rain on volcano makes it impossible to see anything. Water run off from the mountains to the sea makes snorkeling spots have murky water making it impossible to see anything. We had 3 days of rain impacted excursions. Make sure you have something else to do. Read Less

I went on a cruise 30 years ago and couldn't wait to take my husband and go again. This was such a disappointment. I guess when they have no competition, this is what happens. They are the only ship allowed to tour the islands without starting at a port in the mainland. You pay for all food included, then find out that they want you to upgrade and pay more for the decent restaurants. The food in the dining room that is included in your fare is horrible. We are in Hawaii and the chef can't cook fish! I tried 2 different nights and both nights it was mushy and awful. If you want soda, it's extra. The food on my first cruise was amazing and Hawaiian themed. For breakfasts on the previous cruise, there was a buffet with unlimited hawaiian fruits. They had nothing on this one except apples, oranges and pineapples. Milk was not cold, breakfast items not hot. The entertainment on this ship was las vegas and broadway themed. This is not what i'd expect in Hawaii. On the previous cruise, it was all Hawaiian themed. Why would I want a Las Vegas show on Hawaiian cruise? Everything was very generic. I would imagine if you were in Alaska or Europe or Asia, you would get the same cruise. If you want photos taken, they no longer wander the ship and take pics of everyone. You have to go to the photo booth. I can do that anywhere. We tried different dining rooms and the buffet. The food was awful everywhere. Coming back from onshore, we had 3 bottles of water and a bottle of coke. They make you throw all but 1 each away. Seriously? You are forced to buy water from the ship for an exorbitant price. This really upset a lot of people. The greed from this alone will keep me away from Norwegian. The staff was very nice though and I can't say enough good things about our room steward, Cris O. He was amazing. One day I was too sick to leave the boat and he kept checking on us and made me extra towel animals to cheer me up (which they don't do at all anymore). He knew our names and always made sure we had what we needed. He is truly the only good thing we encountered on this ship. It's the best way to get around Hawaii and see several islands in one trip. However, if we were to go back, I'd settle on just visiting one island and skip the cruise. I was so excited to go back and experience the cruise life again, but this really ruined it for me. I am glad we got a balcony though since we could sit out and watch the ocean. Read Less

We choose this cruise because our son is in the Army stationed on Schofield Barracks in Oahu. We have cruised many times on Carnival, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean. This was our first and probably last on Norwegian. It seemed perfect for us, a seven day Island tour round trip from Honolulu. We stared out quite impressed with the ship and food. But from day one it went down hill! Our travel agent suggested we let the ship pick our ocean view room. We were quite happy to see the ocean side of our smaller room was all window, but when we opened the curtain we had a view of a lifeboat! From day one our toilet did not work. I called and complained immediately, but only got lip service that people flushed things they should not. I expressed that on all the other cruise lines we have been on have the same systems and if there was ever a problem, it was fixed. On day six of a seven day cruise the worked on it and it operated for a few hours. Not only could we not use our bathroom, many times we could not stay in the room because the toilet was full and would not flush! After day two we noticed the food was never hot, warm at best! We went to the formal dinning rooms and the buffet with the same results. How likes cold eggs? The food was good when warm. The shows were good for the most part. The crew was very friendly and accommodating. The upgraded state room view of a lifeboat, non working toilet and cold food has made us say never again on Norwegian. Read Less

The convenience of traveling to four Hawaiian islands without having to fly to each, or to unpack was enticing. We've cruised before on Royal Caribbean and there was no comparison here to the wonderful job they did. Staff was rude and rushed, we felt herded into the buffet every day for the same sub-par breakfast, since no other restaurant on the ship was open early enough for us, beds were like slabs of cement, the faint smell of mold was in our bathroom--which required climbing up a high step to get into, and the cabin itself not only required us to walk sideways to get around the bed, but contained nothing to sit on except a fold out sofa bed that would not stay closed, so it took up even more space in the miniscule cabin, and made it impossible to sit on it without practically lying down backwards. Too bad Royal Caribbean isn't allowed to cruise around the islands. A monopoly by NCL means no incentive to improve. The worst thing of all was that we received an email after we had already arrived in Honolulu, informing us that our scheduled early disembarkation ten days later--to sail along the gorgeous Napali Coast--had been cancelled due to "required maintenance". Not emergency maintenance--just required. We had to pay nearly $300 to book a cruise of the coast ourselves, and would not have chosen a balcony cabin on the cruise if we had know this highlight of our whole trip would be cancelled. I wish we had stayed with our original plan to fly from island-to-island. Much cheaper, and not too inconvenient. I would not recommend this cruise to anyone. Even the entertainment was abysmal, although the clearly very, very amateur performers tried their best, the choreography was frantic and disjointed, and performances among the worst we have seen anywhere. We did the Hawaiian cruise from Dec 8 - 15. The first two days we didn't have A/C. Three times during the week our toilet didn't work. Every day they were working on the ship outside our cabin window. WE heard loud banging everyday. One day the chemicals that were using were so bad that they sent me into an asthma attack. The cabin was cleaned well every day but it was very uncomfortable with the noise and smell and lack of A/C. Hawaii was beautiful and we enjoyed that very much....the ship was not clean: the railings were sticky, there was always food and liquid on the floor in the buffet, the elevators were not kept clean. There wasn't always someone there wiping down the spoons in the serving lines. The public bathrooms were often out of order. The windows were so disgusting that you could barely see out of them. NCL should want to deliver a better product than this, ship is definitely outdated. Staff was friendly & good overall. Food was presented well, but I was majorly disappointed due to the fact that Steak & Lobster was not on the menu. Ive been on approximately 7 cruises and all except NCL have Steak & Lobster night. Balcony cabin was very small, bed slept well and room steward was good. Napoli Coast was definitely a highlight for choosing this cruise , NCL deleted that part of the itenary after the ship left port. The $100 on board credit due to taking away the Napoli Coast was a joke. Locals informed passengers on this cruise that NCL has been maintaining this ship for at least 6 weeks. NCL do maintence on your $$$ and not your passengers $$$ or time. The sights on this trip were incredible and this is a trip worth taking , if U choose the right cruise line. Read Less
