We chose MSC through previous good experiences in 2008 and 2014. However, our experience this time left us feeling cheated. Ports of call were in most instances too short in time, particularly if you have limited mobility. The evening dining experience left very much to be desired. We had to complain numerous times about the temperature and standard of food being served, and it was barely tepid. The quality of the food also left a great deal to be desired. Moreover, as for the amount of food served on the plates, this left one feeling, was it worth the effort in ‘dirtying the plates’! It was pitiful. One evening my wife was served a 'Shank of veal' as a main course. It filled the plated about an inch thick comprising entirely of BONE & FAT. When questioned what was wrong, my wife explained, and she was offered another meal, but quite frankly she was put off by her experience. Additionally, I personally enjoy cheese following my meal. The amount served on the plate certainly would not have appeased a reasonably sized mouse! The wine as part of our all inclusive package was undrinkable. The self-service food quality and standard was appalling and not kept at reasonable temperatures. Hygiene, cleanliness of tables, seating etc, was very questionable too with only quick wipes of tables and remnants of food brushed onto floors and chairs! As for the cleanliness of the staff, their uniforms were in a dirty state and some were viewed with splits in trousers! As for deck bars, unless everyone had left the ship to go ashore service was virtually non-existent. One had to wait to be served at the bars as Bar Service waiters were at most times not present or insufficient. In the evenings, things were no better, and one constantly waited at the bars before being served. There appears to be no provision or training given to helping people with disabilities. We are made to queue as everyone else despite having restrictions in mobility and ability to stand for any period of time. Only once in the entire week onboard was I offered assistance in the self-service restaurant, a commendable gesture. However, on another occasion whilst walking around the self-service area, using a walking stick as always, I was made to back up by one of the staff as distinctly he would not give way to me. This was witness by another passenger who looked on in total disgust! Because of my limited mobility and after discussing and receiving a high recommendation from an onboard representative at the excursion office, my wife & I agreed and looked forward to an evening out for a Greek Night in Mykonos. We were to have left the ship at 5.00 pm for a 15-minute transfer by boat. A letter was delivered to our room with the timings. For whatever reason, we were late leaving the ship and arrived at the Mykonos port after 5.30 pm. We were all ushered off the transfer boat. After some commotion by the representatives we were herded onto another boat and taken across to the other side of the harbour. We were advised that it would save time! We arrived at our venue a few minutes before 6.00 pm. We were told originally dinner would be served 5.15/5.30 pm. We were at the Greek Night venue for just on an hour before being ushered out by 7.00 pm. The entertainment comprised of 2 people doing 2 short dances. Certainly nothing like our previous experience of Greek Nights. The food was tepid and diabolical. It comprised, a bowl with salad shared between two people. A plate was served to the table with a small amount of chicken on a stick and one similar of lamb, a couple slices of spiced sausage, with yoghurt a few chips. Of the six persons at our table, virtually all food served was returned uneaten. The dessert comprised of a small square of inedible sweet which was purported to be typically Greek. But, in my personal experience of Greek cuisine, I have never ever seen or tasted such! It was also stated that we would to be taken to see the sunset at a particular place but ended up after a short walk at about 7.15 pm on the harbour side as a group whilst the representative spoke to others in different languages. We missed the setting sun. We had to return to the ship via boat by 8.15 pm latest. For this we were charged an extortionate sum of 62.99 euros each, total 125.98 euros. Our previous experience of Greek Nights was excellent, enthralling and entertaining. This was a shamble and certainly not value for what we paid. We felt cheated. Having experienced this excursion we certainly would not book another, certainly not value for money. The shows onboard compared nothing to what we had experienced on previous cruises and cruise lines. One night comprised of a couple a songs being sung with a dozen other persons dressed up to the nines purporting to be dancers but just strolling and standing around looking pretty! Then we had to contend with the introduction of the Captain and Staff. The show element was no more than about 30 minutes! Embarkation was a mess with passengers waiting around for over two hours with no information as to what was happening! The ship had apparently docked late and previous cruise passengers were late getting off. We were only told this once on board. Disembarking was a fiasco again and being given the wrong information. On the surface the ship looked good but once you scraped away the surface paint, it left a great deal to be desired! Never again, we spoke with several other passengers who felt that they had been ripped off as clearly the service, quality/standards were not what MSC state and I quote “The MSC Cruises experience embodies the elegant side of the Mediterranean to create unique and unforgettable emotions for guests, through discovery of the world’s cultures, beauties and tastes. MSC Cruises translates its passion for the sea into a commitment to excellence in hospitality, professionalism, dedication and mastery of every single detail to ensure the complete happiness and satisfaction of each and every guest”. An absolute nonsense and certainly not what we had experienced. Lastly, at times communication was a problem in being understood and some staff were very rude indeed. Read Less

we choose this cruise to celebrate our exams ending, and although it started weak, it ended up being amazing. the ship had everything you needed, and you could eat whenever you wanted, and there was food for all tastes, although the buffet was crazy. The dinners were better every day, and all waitress was simply great, i celebrated my birthday there and they made it unforgettable. the entertainment team was super energetic, they always gave the best of themselves, offering and they had always a big smile for you, but with the visits, you didn't have much time to do the activities. The best part of the ship was the lord nelson pub, despite we didn't smoke, the voice of konstantin it's just amazing even being sick, it was crazy the way he played, and all the pub team was just wonderful, we tried to go every night. All the ports was amazing, the only negative point was that you had to take the shuttle bus to the center for most cities, and these should be free. We enjoyed each second inside and outside this ship. Read Less

The ship itself is small carrying less than 2000 people the main issues we found is that there is no functional space big enough to accommodate passengers wishing to watch the shows provided by the animation team. This resulted in even if you found a seat, passenger standing in front of you obscuring your view with a result that you too had to stand to watch the show. That said the ship is very clean. The Cabins as you would expect are of a good standard we were in the new section of the ship added in the past few years so ours was not as old some of the others. On the most part I did not hear anything bad about the cabins or the service of the attendants ours seem to speak very little English and did not truly make herself known to us to provide the one on one service that you come to expect when booking a cruise. The ship has good dining rooms and facilities. We only used the buffet restaurant once choosing to have all our meals in the main restaurants this we found to be a great option with a greater array of choice. Without the greater numbers of people the noise and the pushing, barging and lack of tables that we found on our one visit to the buffet restaurants. The restaurant staff were very good always polite happy and willing to serve. The only issue that we found was that they did not seem do you want to serve tea or coffee at the end of the meal the option was never offered. That said they were in no hurry to push you out of the restaurant. The dining overall was fair but it was noted that the same menus were offered this year as were offered last year with no variance so even though we had a choice it did seem a repetition and that you had been there before. Again as with our previous trip. It was noted that the level of competent staff seem to have dropped, this again can be attributed to the launch of the new MSC mega cruise ships. Again a few staff seem to have been moved into positions that they were struggling to provide the level of service required. When spending this kind of money you expect first class service at all times. The ship seems to mainly cater for the Italians who seem to make up the vast majority after passengers. This caused many issues with some passenger who had never sailed with MSC before who thought they were treated as second rate passengers and pushed to the back of the que where service was concerned. There was a great push for you to buy the on-board packages provided this was especially true with the drinks package, a few people who had brought the drink package mentioned and it was indeed the case that the service in the bars was very slow. People that we spoke to were of the opinion that this was so you drink less and therefore could not use the drinks package to its full potential. We did observe servers in the bars ignoring passengers who had recently arrived and were waiting to be served. I myself opted to go to the bar on more than one occasion to get served as this had happened to me. I did find the bar staff in most cases to be helpful but again I did notice passengers orders were being combined by the servers to be taken out at one time instead of being taken out when you order was completed this meant that some servers carrying as many as 10 to 15 drinks on a tray at one time. This resulted in some passengers waiting up to 30 minutes to get their drinks. Where two or three trips could have to have been made to better service the passengers and reduce just waiting time that so annoyed most passengers. I know of at least 4 groups of passengers who refused to pay the service charges mainly due the level of service they received in the bar areas of the ship. This cannot be a great thing for MSC. MSC need to realise that they are judged as a brand on all their fleet. The older and smaller cruise ships with lower standards of service affect how passengers and potential customers perceive the brand. Whilst talking to passengers a number stated that they would never use MSC again based solely on the experience of this Cruise. We have another cruise bookedwith MSC in May next year and I am hoping that there is a vast improvement in the level of service that we receive or that to maybe the last MSC cruise we undertake. The itinerary for the cruise looked wonderful with great destinations what we did find was that on closer investigation some of the stops were only 6 hours this resulted in rushed time ashore with the constant worry and an eye on the time you had to be back on the ship. That said it did not take away from the beautiful locations that were visited Read Less

Chose the cruise because we liked the itinerary and had heard good things about MSC. On arrival at Venice we were kept waiting for ages at the terminal waiting for our transfer. We were given no information but found out later that there were problems due to the fog. Check in procedure could have been better, another long wait. Cabin was excellent, very spacious, fantastica suite. The ship was lovely and the bars were nice. The shows were entertaining. The service at some of the bars was very slow. The food in the most was in my opinion very disappointing. Very small portions and on the whole tasteless and uninspiring. It did get slightly better towards the end of the cruise. The service in the mdr was very good. The drinks package is excellent value. The buffet was not very good not enough choice. They also ran out of butter. We could have done with extra time in Dubrovnik and Heraklion. Not enough time to enjoy these places. Read Less

I am afraid our experience was bad firstly the majority of travellers on board were loud, and had little or no manners, the entertainment was very poor ie the music in Beverly Lounge was very loud and of poor sound quality and musically poor, the theatre show which was supposed to be the highlight show was dreadful as lip synch and poor dance routines was all that was offered many people along with us walked out, the guitar player in the Lord Nelson sounded if he was in agony, in another lounge the piano player was good playing to backing tracks however, he was unable to reach high notes when singing pushing the microphone away, these observations were also observed by many others who we met, overall the entertainment was of poor standard. The stateroom cabin was just about ok ie small and the toilet was not working on many occasions i reported it several times. The ship seemed to be full and we had difficulty getting sunbeds at times and there was no area to get away from the incessant loud chanting and noise coming from the pool area not at all relaxing. The food was just about all right except for crowds descending on the on the buffet at times particularly Italians who were brash and loud, the dreadful background music and the Cruise Directors loud announcements who decided meal times was best to make announcements which few could understand because of the noise level was very uncomfortable and annoying. The trips ashore were just about alright except for Dubrovnik which was vastly overcrowded because of the amount of cruise ships because of this and the heat we immediately left and went back to the ship. I have cruised before in the Caribbean with MSC Divina which was better not by much however, I would not recommend MSC based on our experience with them. Click &GO ie Edel was very good to arrange an alternative flight because of fog delay, the same happened last cruise in the Caribbean because of hurricane Erma. These are our views and many other Irish people on board. PS I would like to point out that i have played music for years and my observations would be fair if deserved. Read Less

This was our first experience in a Cruise. We are very happy about it and these are the reasons why: - The organization of MSC was very good, allowing us to have a safe and very enriching experience; - The places we visit were beautiful and very special; - The cruise staff was amazing. We would like to emphasize the performance of the singer Nenad Konstantin (Lord Nelson's Pub). He is a wonderful singer, musician and artist and he made our holidays even more special. Congratulations! We would pay to watch a show performed by him; - The ship is beautiful outside and inside - the inside areas were very organised, clean and appealing. In our opinion, there are also some negative aspects to point out: - The food could be better; - The medical service is too expensive; - The music of the disco was poor, our biggest disappointment; - The 11th deck was always too crowded. In general, it was a very good and enriching expecience and we would like to repeat it! The experience of a Cruise allowed us to meet wonderful people, from different cultures and different countries and that is the most important thing. Read Less

Fantastic Mediterranean cruise with the MSC Lirica. Amazing experience. I have seen so many beautiful places in Italy, Greece and Croatia. And that in just 1 week. Beautiful Greek islands. The varied coast of Croatia with Dubrovnik as a highlight. And of course Venice with all its water. Temperature averaged above 30C. Very delicious. The water temperature of the Mediterranean in late August is also excellent. For swimming ideal. To visit Venice with a ship is very special. It is also very nice to enter the center of Venice. Everyone in the center uses a boat. You do not see cars, buses and trains. Everything goes through the water in the center. Public transport is via a bus boat. Very cool. The MSC Lirica is a beautiful ship. A recently renovated boat that looks like new. There were 2.000 passengers on the ship, the maximum. There are ships with 4.500 passengers, but 2.000 I also find a lot. The service is good and very friendly. There is so much to eat and drink. Not normal. On board the ship you will find people from all over the world. Staff and passengers come from everywhere. That's pretty funny. A cruise ship is a small world in itself. Nice to experience. Highlight on board: the Lord Nelson Pub, with his modest singer and super guitarist Nenad Konstatin from the Czech Republic, and the sweet Mary from India, who is always ready to serve you. Finally, I want to thank my new Mexican friends for the Mexican Cuba Libres. My favorite drink from now on. Thanks everyone.. Read Less

The cruise was very nice, has a lot of ammenities inside. Moreover, the stops that we did were very good. It was a trip from Venice to Bari, 3 islands in Greece, Dubrovnik and returned to the departure point (venice). The cabin had a view to the sea and it was large enough to fit our needs. The cleaning service was really good as our cabin was always clean. The overall personnel service was good, however sometimes over saturated during peak hours like lunch or dinner. Waiting for a drink sometimes took over 5 mins at the bar. Regarding food, all of the restaurants had good food. The pizza was really good and the fancy dinners had a nice menu. For the night, the pub has outstanding live music/guitar by Nenad Konstantin. Having a couple of drinks after a day full of activities At this pub was a must during our trip. Read Less

Thought we would give MSC a try because of the itinerary from Venice with ports in Greece. Would not recommend if you only speak English. This cruiseline caters to European guests. We pre-booked 5 day excursions through MSC in which 3 were cancelled because there were not enough English speaking guests booked. This was a big disappointment. Many tours available for Italian, Spanish, French and German speaking guests. My son tried the teens club but no one spoke English. Entertainment shows at night some in Italian or French. Other evenings in English. Same type of show each night with same entertainers 2 singers, a few dancers, juggler and acrobats. Don’t expect Broadway type entertainment. We stayed in a balcony suite 10065 which was very spacious with a great walk in closet. One of the better cabins we’ve stayed in. Buffet was crazy. Too small and not enough seating. It was like fighting a crowd at breakfast who hadn’t eaten in a week. We avoided the buffet after the first day and got room service for breakfast. The day excursions we went on were great and getting onboard and off went smoothly. Best meals were dinner in the dining room. Wait staff were great very friendly. Cabin Stewart was great the room was always spotless and clean. It was just an ok cruise. I wouldn’t recommend it and we won’t sail on MSC again. We will go back to sailing with Norwegian and Princess. Best cruise for our family was Norwegian Epic Mediterranean cruise last August. Fantastic ship, lots for the kids including water slides, buffet was awesome, lots of activities, large casino, fabulous staff and excellent customer service. Read Less

We had never heard of this cruise line but ran the Eastern Italy and Greece and it fit our schedule. We didn’t have a lot of expectations of this cruise but it turned out to be one of the most fun cruises we have ever been on! As Americans we were concerned that we would not understand what was going on, but we actually did just fine as they make announcements and daily information letter in English and other languages. There is a wonderful show every night that was highly entertaining! Very talented performers! They also have a entertainment staff that run all the activities throughout they day and into the evening. They were so funny and engaged the guests with so much energy! They put on their own comedy show every night that had very few folks at the first night but by the end of the cruise there was standing room only! You could tell they loved their job! We met several staff members on board that we formed a relationship with which always makes a cruise more enjoyable. Our favorite bar was the Pub. Really have only a few negatives we found on board. Breakfast was not the best meal for sure. We only had lunch on board 3 times and that was good but found we liked eating in the dining room better for lunch. Dinners were fantastic! There was probably on 2 dinners that were not a good as others. We traveled with 4 of us and almost always each of us had something different so got to taste a lot of the food. The elevators are very slow, so we tended to walk up and down instead. Getting off the ship in ports could have been better. People can start this cruise at several ports so there was folks going on shore for the day and some leaving the cruise. For the most part we didn’t notice unless it was a port where there was a lot of guests disembarking like in Venice. They should have had a separate exit off the ship for those going out for the day as you had to wait in line to get off the ship along with everyone else. Takes away from your port times. Some of the ports had such a short time in them that was not fun in some of the ports. Some of them a few hours were enough, others, we would have loved a full day. The buffet area is not good! Way too small and hard to get around with the layout they have. Food was good, but it was really hot in the dinning area and very narrow. Not a good feel up there. Like I said before, we liked eating in the dinningroom for both Breakfast and Lunch better. Just a better feel. You could order off menu or go through the buffet in there. Overall, we had a blast on this cruise. Felt a little “fish out of water”the first day only because we felt like we were the only ones on board that spoke English, but by day 2 we were just fine and met folks from all over Europe, and had a blast trying to communicate with them! Just added so much to our experience! Give them a try, you may be pleasantly surprised! Read Less

We choose this cruise for the Itinerary and wanted to try a new cruise ship other that what we have been on.To start getting on was no problem bags taken to our rooms except mine never turned up until four hours later as I had a travel iron in my case which is not allowed. The minute you get on the ship you are hassled to buy the drinks packages we explained numerous times we already had this.my husband went to the bar to order some soft drinks to be told we did not have the right card, eventually sorted by reception it was there mistake.Dining we was first sitting and seated in a nice area waiters seemed great until you order, they are so busy trying to look after so many tables we got forgotten about on numerous occasions for drinks. The food is average very small portions but other tables were ordering more than one starter and dinner.Entertainment is geared up for Italians very poor same thing most nights, shows were ok but the stage is so small they look cramped up together I kept looking to see if they were going to fall of the stage. Most night we ate at the buffet as the food was better than the dining area but this is like being fed at the zoo with people pushing and shoving to get at the food.Hygiene is hit and miss I have never seen so many people walk past the gel stations there to stop infection, including staff.Cleaning is not great on board buffet are is strewn with empty plates with the staff trying there best to keep on top of everything which was in possible. Don,t think the windows have ever been cleaned on the deck is littered with empty glasses most days. The pub area Lord Nelson is absolutely freezing you need to wear a jacket to keep warm this was the worst place to order drinks yet the quietest. What MsC don,t tell you is about the transfers to the ports of call as the ship is big it cannot dock near so you have to use the shuttle which you get a ticket for and pay at the end of the week. Most times it is much cheaper to get a local taxi than use there own.as sometimes you only on for five minutes.Dubrovnik was the worst 14 euros each taxi outside 12 euros for four people total rip off.The staff try there best it is just too busy for them to cope.Beware if you intend to use the gym there is a 20 minute curfew on all the equipment which is crazy as a runner it takes this time to warm up it clearly is not big enough for the amount of people on board. Disembarkation on the final day was the worst we have seen nobody knew were they should be we got separated from family and went to three exits to be told we were at the wrong place it took longer to get of the boat than to get on.Value for money its not great better ships to go on it is defiantly geared up for European customers. We chose Lirica to sail across Italy, Greece and Dubronvik. Was happy with most of the ports, halts, amenities on the cruise and excursions. We took guided excursions at every stop and were satisfied with the trips. There was an excursion of Paradise island, Corfu, that got cancelled due to strong winds n rough sea condition but the cruise refunded the excursion fee in full. We faced some issues using our travelers card as it got blocked due to multiple transactions by the cruise. Its advisable to carry more than one card or have a back plan in case travelers card does not work. Most of the restaurant had set menu, depending on the theme nights, but we were lucky to get an Indian chef, from Pune, who prepared special Indian meals for us. My husband, being a vegetarian, was extremely pleased. My son enjoyed the kids club as he met a few english speaking kids. We booked a full board plan and balcony cabin but took yet another upgrade to include unlimited select beverages at all restaurants / decks, though we ended up using the deck 5 and deck 11 restaurants most of the time. Theater had a different show each night and was a great way to end each night. I wish the cruise is able to add a few diving excursions to its itinerary as we crossed almost 3 - 4 seas / ocean but could not dive anywhere. Read Less

We chose this cruise, because of the path it took and the timing for our travel needed to be in this specific window of time. The trip only included my husband and I. Our trip was Venice>Bari>Delos>Mykonos>Herkalion> Corfu>Dubrovnik>Venice. We opted for a room with a balcony, the aurea package which included unlimited*(select) drinks, a couples massage, access to Deck 13, preference seating during dinner with extended menu. We chose the excursions in Delos to explore the ruins, and our favorite excursion was the Dubrovnik cave snorkeling. On our own, we did wake boarding, parasailing and other water sports at a local place in Corfu. The staff was courteous and attentive. We had privacy when we needed but at times, it was difficult to find any seating when it was time to eat in the dining areas. We enjoyed the poolside area of the ship. Usually there was enough seating and Deck 13 was okay but exclusive. The massage at the spa was one of the best Ive ever had. We also had access to the sauna with the aurea package but did not use it as it was not coed and I did not wish to go sit alone and neither did my husband. There was a gym which looked pretty cool, but we did not use it. The entertainment on the ship, a dancey magic show, with singing. It was....sub par. Kind of silly, super cheesy and not really worth the time. Maybe those with children enjoyed it but as a couple of adults, we could take it or leave it. The casino, blah, not interested even with the tiny bit of allotted credits we had. Bingo was offered but seemed too expensive. We did choose to have our picture taken on one of the two formal nights. We really enjoyed getting dressed up and dancing. Our favorite thing to do after dinner was go listen to the lounge singer, who sang some in spanish, maybe they were Puerto Rican? They were fantastic. Also, listening to the piano being played in the other lounge area was nice. We danced and drank as much as we could. Then, we would get a couple of cappucinos or american coffees in the cafe area of the ship. We enjoyed our options at dinner. We were always at at the window area in the restaurant we ate dinner at every night. It was a really cool view but the sun gleaming in the window all day made this particular area very hot. The heat coming in combined with my husbands sea sickness, did not always make for an enjoyable meal. Most of our favorite foods were in the common eating areas where there was all you can eat pizza and sandwiches, and sweet treats. At one point, I had a little hint of a not so good time. I'll explain, I am very petite. I am under 5'0, therefore many times when seated, my feet dangle. Because of this, I often prefer to sit with my legs crossed in my chair, this is a habit and for comfort. I was sitting this way at dinner one night and the waiter told me to put my feet down. I was a little offended and embarrassed. Other than that, everything was WONDERFUL. Read Less

I surprised my wife with this cruise for our 10th anniversary after we talked about visiting Greece for this anniversary since last year. I chose this cruise based on the itinerary and the price for these great ports of call. The ports of call did not disappoint at all, whether it was Bari (go down to Polignano a Mare for a little bit while at this port), Mykonos (absolutely spectacular), Heraklion, Crete (a solid stop but didn't have enough time there to explore outside the city to see more impressive Cretan sights), Corfu (nearly as spectacular as Mykonos), Dubrovnik (incredibly beautiful as well), and of course Venice (which is amazing)! When my wife and I reviewed the MSC shore excursions after booking the cruise, we were disappointed in their offerings and asked our travel agent for her advice on what else we could do. She recommended Viator and we were very happy with their tours. We planned our own excursions in Bari/Heraklion/Venice, and used Viator for excursions in the other three ports. Viator had more interesting and MUCH less expensive excursions than the cruise ship offered. As an example, we did the Achillieon Palace excursion in Corfu through Viator and it ended up as a private tour (it was supposed to be up to 10-12 people but the tour guide chose not to cancel even though only my wife and I were booked for that day). The similar MSC excursion cost ~$15/person more and was large groups of people crammed on buses. Do a little bit of homework ahead of time and you can have phenomenal experiences for a lot less than you would pay through the cruise ship. The MSC Lirica was "stretched" a few years ago which added additional cabins but, as far as we could tell, no meaningful additional common spaces. This leads to the ship feeling cramped at times, particularly during the one full day at sea. Just temper your expectations with this ship and know that it is an older ship and not laid out to comfortably accommodate all the passengers. The service on the ship was excellent, from our room steward to the servers in the restaurants. They were very attentive and willing to help with anything. Since this ship is more of a value ship, they try to do lots of upsells from the moment you walk onto the ship. Whether it is the all inclusive drink package or a water package or a soda package, be prepared for people plugging these packages throughout the entire cruise. Our stateroom package included 12 vouchers each (total 24) for any drinks throughout the cruise (excluding premium drinks) and we didn't need any additional vouchers or packages. If you like to enjoy multiple drinks a day then you'll probably want to get one of the other packages at some point during your cruise. Up on the pool deck, you'll notice a delicious looking gelato bar, but unless you've purchased at least the all-inclusive standard drink package, you can't get any of that gelato without paying extra. Dining was a bit of a let down on this cruise from our previous experiences (Norwegian & Carnival). The main dining room (we were assigned to L'Ippocampo) was hit or miss, with most meals being misses. Out of the 5 meals we ate in the dining room, only 2 were above average. In order to get a more premium meal, the staff offers a lobster package (€22/meal w/ glass of prosecco) or a T-bone package (€18/meal w/ glass of red wine); we didn't opt to pay for any of these premium meals. The buffet areas in Le Bistrot and La Pergola had okay food most of the time, with occasional above average food. The MSC website shows two specialty restaurants (Kaito Sushi & Jia Yao) on the Lirica but only Kaito exists on the ship. Kaito also becomes a Bar/Dance Club after hours. The Entertainment/Activities on the ship were average to below average. The main ship theatre entertainment each night was well below average. The performers tried their best but the stage is small and not configured well; one night, the gala night (when you would expect the performance to be at its best), my wife and I walked out 15 minutes in because the performance wasn't engaging or interesting at all (several other individuals had been walking out since shortly after the program began). The theatre itself is on the small size for the number of people on the ship and the chairs are old and make it feel as if you're sitting on the ground. They offer some activities throughout the day and night. We didn't participate in most of them, but the dance lessons late at night in the Blue Disco Lounge were fun and the instructors very engaged and lively. Overall my wife and I loved this cruise, not for the ship itself or for MSC, but because of the amazing ports we got to experience. We met people at our dining table that are now wonderful new friends that we look forward to seeing again soon and we had fantastic adventures at each port. If you are looking for a stellar itinerary at a great price, this is the cruise for you. If you look more for the ship experience and its activities, then this may not be the ship/cruise for you. We booked this cruise as it fit our travel dates and destinations but what a MISTAKE! This cruise is really just for Europeans and rude ones at that. The cruise staff just did not seem happy at all. They were argumentative at times and did not want to hear your comments. We paid for the Aurea Package which was the "all inclusive" drinks etc. So we get on board and go to the bar to order a drink - sorry sir/madam you can only have water! So we have to go the reception desk and wait in line with a lot of other people who were having issues also with our paperwork which was lucky that I printed our before we left home. This clearly stating that we had the all inclusive package. Sorted - no. Go to a bar that night and order a cocktail and are told that this in not included in this drinks package - what part of all inclusive is this? Anyway go back to the reception desk and this time get the supervisor who informs us that there are 2 type of all inclusive - ours and a premium one. This girl was just so horrible that we left and went back to our cabin. In the morning we demanded to speak to her boss who was lovely and sorted this all our for us - The cabin on this ship was lovely - cannot fault that - the cabin steward kept it really clean and tidy and there is plenty of room to more around - Dining was not good at all. Food was generally served cold and not a very good menu. We have anytime dining but this is not actually true as most of the passengers had already booked their tables (in the prime spots) on the first night leaving the rest of us just getting whatever was left. It just seemed to be unfair. Entertainment was the worst and most ridiculous I have ever experienced. Most times we just walked out - once they had a man crawling around screaming. The service from our dining waiter and one of the bars was great as was our cabin steward but most other could not care less. You do not get served sitting at the tables you have to go the bars and order yourself. Its quite bad. The ports were also not that great. Seemed that this ship got the worst and further away from the docks. From the bus transport from Venice to the port should have been a warning sign for us - we were not told anything just follow the girl - this was a long way from the airport to the bus with our suitcases and several older people were really struggling. Then no communication = get to the port and we had to get our own luggage from the bus and once again walk it to the terminal. On other cruises this would have been done for you. Also, on the compulsory demo re the lifejackets - the staff on the boat did not enforce this at all - the announcements only came one and the only way we knew about it was we saw other people doing it. But this ship had to do this exercise 3 times as passengers just kept on ignoring. I would not recommend this cruise line at all - its basically aimed only at Italian and other Europeans. They make announcements in so many languages that it just goes on and one for ages and you forget what it was about in the first place. Read Less

We had an absolutely great time in this cruise! One of the entertainers Amin was extremely kind and so much fun! He always greeted us on the ship which was nice and always lit a smile on our face. He also spoke Arabic which was really exciting because we couldn’t find anyone else on the wholeshio that spoke Arabic but him! He always made us laugh and ensure we had the best stay possible! The things I didn’t like about the ship were: the restaurant buffet didn’t have many options and was sometimes hard to find a seat, the bartenders on the cruise a lot of times didn’t go in order of who got to the bar first which was kind of annoying! The fitness room had some machines but they were all outdated and the hot tub was extremely small where most of time it was full with people without a time limit which could be fixed with a set time limit. Overall the hotel was average, nothing great but it was not a bad experience. Read Less

I went on this cruise with my family and a friend and purely picked it because of wanting one from a specific date. Honestly an amazing cruise and experience overall. It was my first cruise so obviously I have nothing to compare it to but the friend that went had been on several top class cruises through his life and said it was the best one by far. The staff were great as they were helpful and friendly and were from places all over the world so they were also very interesting to speak to. The cabin was a bit small for three people but was very clean as it was cleaned every day. The main dining room was very posh and nice but sometimes the selection of food in the money was not very large. Not a lot of vegan options in the buffet so my sister had to make do with fruit most of the time. I would definitely recommend getting the drinks package as you will definitely get your money’s worth as cold drinks are needed through the hot days. The entertainment was great and there was lots of things to do through the day if you stayed on board for whatever reason or for any days at sea. The gym was great but the spa costed a lot extra so I didn’t bother with it. There was a great room for leaving your kids if you needed to where they would be looked after, have fun and make friends. There was lots of people from different places, mainly Italy, Germany, Spain and France but a few other English people. This didn’t bother me as it was interesting to meet people from other countries but if you don’t like culture and being outside your comfort zone then maybe give it a miss. The pool could get very busy when it was hot so if you wanted a deck chair near the pool or in a good place you would need to get up pretty early. Also travelled with a wheelchair passenger and the staff did everything they could to make life easier and make boarding and embarking easier. It was overall a spectacular cruise and there was almost nothing to complain about, I would definitely recommend Read Less

MSC LIRICA May 11-18 I have recently returned from a cruise on the MSC Lirica, sailing from Venice through the Adriatic. Everything I will report is my personal opinion, which I recognize could be quite different from someone else’s take on the same cruise. I am a senior female from the USA and I traveled solo. This was my 30th cruise. As on most cruises, there were pros and cons, but overall, I was very satisfied with the cruise. I embarked around noon on May 11th and it went smoothly and quickly, maybe 30 minutes from arriving at the terminal to walking onto the ship. The ship is clean and in very good repair. The décor is mirrors everywhere. The staircases and elevator banks look so similar that sometimes it was hard to tell if I were in the place I meant to be. I had an inside cabin which was quite roomy for a solo, but might have limited drawer/storage space for a couple. The closet was large and had a dozen hangers. Service was good. The staff must deal with multiple languages, so there was occasionally a breakdown in communication there. Nonetheless, they all tried to fulfill my wishes. I attended 2 ship’s parties and both were very well handled. One was for the returning Voyagers Club members. They had unlimited champagne and mocktails, music and dance entertainment, and the Captain addressed us. It was held in the theater, though, so the intended purpose of meeting others who have sailed on MSC before couldn’t really happen; not when you are immobilized in rows. The other party was a meet-the-captain party, but he did not attend. There were multiple complimentary drinks offered and good entertainment. Go a little early to get a good seat as there was standing room only for the late-comers. I would like to have attended more of their shows but their reservations system took some figuring out. The shows were complimentary but required a reservation, to be made on automated screens. I was not the only one who thought they had made a reservation, only to be turned away from the show for having no reservation. Get some help from the customer service desk. What I did see was very good quality, lasting about 30 minutes. Due to the many languages served, you can expect singing/dancing type entertainment with some acrobatics. Most of the passengers were sun lovers and the pool area was always packed with full lounge chairs. Even the “promenade” deck was packed, so a walker would have to dodge the chairs. There was no observation lounge at the front of the ship as there has been on every other cruise I have taken. So finding a nice place to relax and enjoy the view took some ingenuity. Earlier reviews had mentioned nuisance smokers, but I did not find that to be a problem. There were 4 designated smoking areas and the only one that had an odor was around the Lord Nelson Pub. I never noticed it in the Casino, but I was not there at a time of peak activity. The food was average for a cruise. Some dishes were very good, but many were just okay. I had a fixed dining time and saw the maitre d’ right after boarding to ensure that I was seated at a table of English speakers. At breakfast and lunch you could sit anywhere and others could be seated to share your table. Portion size varied but tended to be small, which suited me. My table companions and I ordered two courses if we felt one would not be enough. The deserts were especially good. (On many other cruises I have felt the deserts were pretty, but not tasty. That was not an issue on the Lirica and I ate more sweets than planned.) The buffet was just like most buffets and I ate there only on embarkation day, when that was all that was available. On the negative side, the biggest complaint throughout the ship was for the ubiquitous upcharges. I had booked through MSC-USA, consequently, I received a water package for lunch and dinner. Otherwise, that is a separate charge for water. That was the limit of my benefits. Dealing with MSC-USA was very frustrating. Representatives were not knowledgeable and gave different answers to the same question and usually gave incorrect information. I was entitled to free room service during certain hours, but that was useless since there was a charge for every item on the room service menu. At meals you should take care that certain items may have an extra charge. If in doubt, ask before ordering. For example, fresh orange juice at breakfast was about E4 and when they ask if you want orange juice, you may assume it is included; processed orange juice is included. There is a nice coffee shop onboard, with charges for coffee, but accompaniments are included if you buy coffee. The ship usually did not berth near the destination towns and provided shuttles for various fees (from about 7-13 Euros each). (FYI: in Mykonos the ship’s water bus is directly next to the city water bus and goes to the same destination, but the public bus is only E2 each way and runs more frequently. Heraklion was walkable.) I had been to all the ports before and did not take any of the ship’s excursions, so cannot comment on them. Port stays were too short on several stops. There were especially a lot of complaints at Dubrovnik, that there was hardly any time to see things, considering the time to get to and from the city. I hope these observations are helpful to those of you wondering about the MSC Lirica. I ask myself if I would sail on MSC again and the answer: it depends. I would have to like the ports and be sure there would be enough time to see what I wanted, including transport time. The ship experience itself was fine. Read Less

We chose this cruise as we wanted a comfortable and relaxing way to explore a lot of different cities. We have been on the MSC Sinfonia before, and we immediately felt at home on the Lirica, as they are similar. Our cabin was fantastic - we booked with a balcony and got upgraded to the top floor (thank you MSC!) including a lounge and a bath in the bathroom :) We also chose to purchase the "all inclusive drinks package" and wow, this really saved us a lot of money and meant we could, other than the great drinks and cocktails, have as much water, awesome coffee and ice cream as we wanted! Very friendly and professional staff, it really feels as if you get to know them personally - they remember your drinks order, greet you by name and stop to chat. The entertainment team is a special bunch of people; they have an awesome zest for life and ensure non-stop fun! We absolutely loved the theatre shows, we did not miss one and each one was quite different from the other. We did not get off at every port, as it is also enjoyable to stay on the ship and lounge at the pool, chill in the Jacuzzi, sip on a cocktail, take an afternoon nap - just have a real relaxing time. We alternated having dinner in the sit-down restaurant downstairs, or the buffet upstairs - there really are great options of food for every meal! We did not do any paid excursions, but opted to explore by foot as we are fit and used to travel - a real highlight on this itinerary was Dubrovnik - walking the old city walls was an incredible experience! The embarking and disembarking process was seamless, despite the number of people. Read Less

We selected this cruise to introduce the cruise way of seeing countries to family members who never been on a ship before. This was an affordable way of seeing many places although we have seen some of the location already on a previous cruise. The fact that food is included makes it worthwhile. the cost of any drinks is however too high for us being used of paying more reasonable prices in our own country for soft drinks etc. The very long stay at Mykonos was not very well planned since there is not much to do apart from the short excursion. More time could have been granted at Dubrovnik for example to enjoy this fabulous city and areas. The food was good but not as good as on Sinfonia and less available during evenings. The shows was very good and enjoyable. Just not enough emphasize on English guests, we again were in the minority and felt left out in the entertainment on board. not enough done for English speaking guests. This will therefore probably be my last MSC cruise. Not enough space in gym. Read Less

Poor entertainment, food and service. worst cruising experience of my life. I thought a European (sailed from Venice without even realising we had left, absolutely no atmosphere on board) cruise would be amazing but boy was I wrong! I have cruised many times from Sydney to various destinations but this onboard experience was the absolute worst. Which cruise liner runs out of mugs every night when they advertise a 24/7 coffee station? Pay big euro to get off at every port to travel 1 to 2 kms out to the town (i suggest you catch a taxi). They charged 160 euro to borrow a wheelchair to the medical room since no bell boys were available. Wait staff were only friendly for first two days when they constantly tried to sell me a drinks packages. After then nothing, no conversations happened again. Unlike other liners waiters who I still communicate with today. Italian front desk receptionist had so much attitude. Lady, change your career path if you're not happy to assist customers! Entertainment on board was at a minimum and very cheesy. I've seen better productions at a school assembly than their evening entertainment (30 minute performances). Shows were laughable. FOOD!!! Everyone's fear on a cruise is putting on weight. Forget it onboard MSC Lirica. The same food (minus two meats they'd change at each sitting) in the same order for lunch and dinner. Often they'd run out of the popular desserts. I will NEVER cruise with MSC ever again and I strongly suggest you google another cruise liner!!! Read Less

I once traveled with SilverSeas, where everything was included – truly it was. Also, the food was very good and interesting. So that is what I have for comparison. The MSC was a cheaper cruise; so I took the top package offered – largest room and “Aurea” experience. As the sales person told me, you can have anything you want to eat and drink on the ship and go anywhere. Also, you can use your minibar in your room and have free room service. Turns out that isn’t true. Perhaps I did purchase the “top package,” but later I found out some food is extra and most of the drinks are extra. So if I wanted to get the “extras” package on top, that would be another $200/day. For example, I could have one “bar” vodka and one brand of beer, but the other 8 vodkas they had were extra and the other 9 beers were also extra. That is just an example. Also, the minibar was not included and room service was only for some rolls and horrible coffee in the morning – not regular meals. I did complain and was told it is unfortunate the person selling it to me didn’t understand it. There is nothing they WOULD do for me, except upsell me more, which is what everyone was constantly trying to do. I also found that annoying. SilverSeas was so much the opposite – no upselling things. I wasn’t sure what to expect with the food. The buffet was large and looked good, but the food was just edible and not delicious. There isn’t one thing I wanted to have again. They had bacon at breakfast, but it had no taste. How does one make bacon with no taste? I had read the best food is on the pool deck at the hamburger and pizza areas – they weren’t great, but were probably better. There are 2 main restaurants, but they all have the same menu - rather boring. I chose calamari. It came with veggies as in tempura, BUT was VERY greasy and cold. I didn't eat it. They wanted to bring me something else. I told them I don’t want anything - I was afraid to try anything else. So they made me a new one fresh anyway. The shrimp and calamari were now hot, but still very greasy. The veggies were still greasy and cold, so they didn't bother making them fresh. I was happy to know there was a sushi restaurant, too. But that wasn’t included. The coffee in the morning was hardly drinkable – a shocking surprise, considering it is an Italian cruise line. Luckily there is a coffee bar, where one can purchase decent coffee (although, luckily, that was included in our package). For the Aurea package there was a separate area in the regular dining room for breakfast from a menu that had fish. They never told us about it, so we missed it most of the cruise and only stumbled upon it the last 2 days. There, for example, I could get smoked salmon. We enjoyed having the coffee in the room and sitting on the balcony to enjoy the sea air. If we used room service, we had to pay extra for it, but if we bought it back ourselves, it was okay and “included.” But so many people smoke (it is not permitted on balconies, etc., but no one stops them), that all we can smell is smoke. Obnoxious. That also ruined our plan to leave the balcony door open to feel and smell the salt air and hear the water all night. I was rather surprised the windows everywhere were dirty. Again, my other experience was of clean windows. This includes dining rooms, our own suite, the gym, etc. It seems one of the most important things for a cruise ship to have clean windows for the guests to look out at things. Then there was the noise. SilverSeas attracts an older crowd dress up. This wasn’t the same. There were a lot of children running, screaming, yelling in the hallway and on balconies. The music around bars and on the pool deck was almost so loud, we couldn’t talk to each other. I suppose some people like that. Then there is the problem of getting on and off the ship. If one pays for the top tier, it seems those people should have priority for embarking and disembarking, but that wasn’t generally the case. There was some priority the first and last day, but not otherwise. Yet, families with kids and the staff were always sent to the front of the long lines. I was dreading the constant grouchy searches and pat downs required, since I have a metal knee. In each port we had to do it twice to get back on the ship. Once was in the port area after a long line and then a second time on the ship after another long line. It seems it should just be easier and more efficient. I guess I learned this isn’t the cruise line for me. I need very small ships (hundreds instead of thousands), so things just work out better. I left out the good, since that isn’t what stands out. Our dining room staff were efficient and friendly. Our room was kept clean (except for windows). Even the reception staff were friendly and efficient for the most part. Read Less
