I have been reading a few of the reviews for this cruise and felt I needed to add my review. This is the longest cruise we have ever done and I was wondering what I would think about a longer cruise and I loved it. We are in our early 60's, very active and have been on over 22 cruises, our 5th with HAL and second time on the Oosterdam. Embarkation was a breeze. We were traveling with friends who were in a suite and we were able to bypass lines because they had priority embarkation. We always book interior rooms and our room on this cruise was really nice, the biggest interior room on the ship, with an L shaped couch and a table and chair. The I category rooms are always a good option on HAL. We had one problem with our shower and it was fixed immediately when we reported it and they even called to make sure we were happy and gave us a plate of desserts with a note telling us how sorry they were for the trouble. Our room stewards were wonderful, Adi and Hamin. They took such good care of us the whole cruise. I like fresh fruit in the room and it was there every day for me. Adi always asked how we were doing and if we needed anything and he was always quick to honor any request. The entire staff we encountered on this cruise were excellent. I love the way HAL takes care of their passengers. Our dining room waiters were FANTASTIC. We had fixed early dining and Andri always made sure we were happy with our meals. He took the time to know our likes and dislikes and, even though I believe he was overextended sometimes (seems like he had a lot of tables to serve), he still was always smiling. The only thing that I found lacking on this cruise was the entertainment and activities. I thought the shows were average, at best, and think HAL could take a look at the Royal Caribbean production shows that I think are far superior. The entertainment that they brought in was mostly boring to me. The different lounge entertainment was mediocre, although we did love the piano bar. We like karaoke, but they only offered it in limited amounts. DJ Bruce was lots of fun and the highlight of all the evening entertainment offerings. If you are looking for a cruise where people party in the disco, this wasn't the cruise. We went in the disco a few times and were the only ones there, except one night where two ladies were dancing. The captain was entertaining and informative. The travel guide gave very good information about the ports and good cruising commentary when we went through Milford Sound. It was crowded in the Crow's nest during that time because the weather was cold and rainy and people probably didn't want to brave the cold. The cruise director was great. All in all, this was a fantastic cruise. I really have nothing to complain about. People who are complaining about this cruise in their reviews must have been on a different cruise than we were! We were an extended family group which included 6 children between 3 - 11 and 8 Adults 35 - 65, across 5 cabins. Oh yes - and we were all on our first cruise! The other members of our party were in cabins that had a window looking out to the sea, but my partner and I decided we wanted a bit of luxury and booked ourselves a balcony suite , which was absolute heaven! The Oosterdam was fantastic - particularly for the children who spent most of their time in the kids club , which they absolutely loved. We only ever really saw the children at meal times. Meal times in the formal dining room were fantastic - the waiters went out of their way to look after the kids and entertain them , they were sensational. The food was out of this world and catered so well to my partner's diabetes , he couldn't believe they made sensational deserts just for diabetics like him. We discovered an entire fridge of diabetic deserts up in the Lido dining area! Talking of the Lido , great food, from breakfast to supper. The French Onion Soup is to die for , and it is available every night in the main dining room (if you must have it every night). The Pinnacle Grill impressed my partner so very much , he said he had never tasted a better lobster tail in his life. Our cabin was 6069 on the Upper Veranda Deck. It was lovely having the veranda to go out and sit and watch the waves go by, or have a couple of other family member pop up and join us for a drink. The beds were sensational , extremely comfortable, and we were rocked to sleep every night. There was loads of cupboard space to fit all of our stuff, and the bathroom was a pretty good size too. The guys who looked after our cabin were fantastic and treated us to a different towel critter every night. I had expected to experience a little sea-sickness but didn't have any at all, which was pretty amazing given that we spent at least some of the cruise dodging cyclones. The only thing I would criticise is the coffee , it was dreadful. Even in the Explorations Lounge where you pay extra for it, it was horrible. We're going to take our own instant next time we go , yep it's THAT bad! Wow what a fantastic cruise, what a great crew, great food, extraordinarily relaxing, lovely friendly service staff and great cabins. I can't wait until December 2013. Read Less

Our stateroom had ample room for 2 adults and a child. Had sufficient storage space for suitcases under bed and drawers in the bed. Our room was serviced twice a day and was always spotless and loved the towel creations and chocolates on the bed each evening. All staff including housekeeping, bar staff, dining room staff, front desk, recreation staff and crew always had a smile and greeted us. They would go out of their way to accommodate you and always willing to serve and make you happy. There were so many activities to do each day and the entertainment and the shows were top class, I would have paid to see the Singers and Dancers. Our 9 year old daughter had a great holiday and swore before we went on the cruise that she will not go to kids club (Club HAL) so we took her up there to have a look and the staff were so friendly that she decided to stay and continued going to Club HAL for the remainder of the cruise. The food on the ship was excellent. We dined in the Vista Dining Room for 9 of the nights and The Pinnacle Grill the other 5 nights and the food in the Pinnacle grill is amazing and the service was impecable. Our waiter and Beverage waiter were friendly, always went out of their way to make you happy and the service and food was fantastic, as was the variety. The facilities/bars/restaurants/spa/recreational facilities on board the ship were extremely clean, well staffed and always friendly staff. There are so many bars and things to do we did'nt get to go to all of them. The highlight of our trip was the 6.30pm Cocktail Sampler each evening at the Atrium Bar where we were served 4 cocktails each night by an extremely friendly and talented bar man. It was at the Atrium bar we made most of our new log life friends who we will keep in touch with. We did not do many shore excursions as we did our own thing most days but the ship does offer great excursions. Don't take a travel iron, as your luggage does go through an xray and they do confiscate it until the end of the cruise. This is definitely not my last cruise and have already started saving for the next one. Read Less

So, my sister and I wanted to surprise our husbands with a first cruise and the destination was Alaska. We chose HAL because so many reviews stated that this was a top notch cruise line with attention to superb detail. First off, the ship is so run down that it wasn't very impressive. The red leather chairs in the Vista Lounge are so dirty that the chair arms are no longer red but gray with dirt!!! The carpeting thru out the ship is a disgrace; chairs in our room were all stained. The first 2 days on ship the staff served the food for hygenic reasons thereby making for extremely long lines in the Lido buffet. There were lines everywhere on the ship! We couldn't ever make reservations for any of the restaurants because they were already all reserved. My sister had the room next to me which was a Superior Suite; she was supposed to get all these upgrades and be treated extra special for the room category; well, nada zip zilch! she didn't get anything different than me. After watching so many different movies over the years, I had a vision of being treated like a queen in a large stateroom and wearing beautiful clothes and having great dinners. So if I didn't have that impression, the cruise probably would have been fine. However, service was truly mediocre, food was so so, room was small and not very clean. I know without a doubt we won't be on HAL again. Read Less

We took fleece jackets and that was fine. In Sitka we were a little cold, probably dressing in layers is the best bet. We did not have any rain. It was cool (60's or 50's), but not really cold. Our first 24 hours we had high seas and everyone was a bit sea sick, some more than others. After that no problem. Sunday we got on the boat. Next day was Glacier Bay, you don't get off the boat, I recommend going to the bow of the boat for best views. On the boat, I paid for a massage, and also to use the jacuzzi hot tub that you have to pay extra for. If I was doing it again I would skip those expenses. We did use the hot tubs that are free and they are just as good. You have to pay for sodas, if you get a drink card for sodas you can get $50 of sodas for $25. We bought laniards to carry around the room key like a necklace, you might want to bring some along if you have them. The piano bar is good, the magician/comedian is really good, the entertainment is pretty good overall. For photos, you can get all your photos for $400 including negatives, or buy them by the sheet. We bought just a few by the sheet, but someone told me that they planned to buy all their pictures so they got as many taken as they could - there are 5 stations set up for photos on the last formal night, and they had pics taken at all the stations. There are many opportunites to get photos, and the formal posed ones are really well done, so it might be worth it to have that strategy. WiFi is very expensive, 75 cents per minute, or 55 if you buy 90 minutes. Way too expensive. We were also on 5th deck mid-ship with a balcony, it was nice. The rooms are adequate, the beds were comfortable. The service is very good. Overall we had a great time. Read Less
