One day prior to embark, I received an email stating that they had to alter the route due to something that I didn't understand. Tried to call the NCL agent who sold me the trip and I got no answer. At the end, we visited one less country and spent 36 straight hours sailing. The pool is too small for the amount of people cruising, there's literally no space for anything. 50 people fill the pool. The buffet was always overcrowded, we always had to make a line to get something. The Premium beverages pkg is absurd. If you want a drink after 3 am, the only open bar tells you the bar is closed (for alcohol) The "free cruising" dining option is not convenient, there's always a line of people waiting to be seated. There a re a lot of hidden charges (communication phone to phone within the ship should be free, not 10$ per phone) The quality of food was fair, I expected a little more for the price I paid. Cruised many times on RC and NCL has away to go to compare! First time on NCL! First day my friend/roommate was hurt due to hole in ships floor! Spent time in infirmary! No one on the ship did anything to try to appolige or make up for their negligence! I ran two flights of stairs & found room where incident occurred before any medical where on scene! With the exception of the Irish pub, the food in the dining room had no flavor nd non creative options! There was no activity by the pool until the very last day! No one even knew who cruise director was! I met more people than he did! Funny enough we called the asst director to our table at 5 o’clock somewhere and expressed the disappointment without ant activity by pool! Coincidence the next day, last day on ship they did a little something by pool! Everyone enjoyed so doesn’t make sense all other days there was nothing! Other than Lesther at sky bar, Reenan the waiter in Aqua and my room steward Lunni, who were exceptional, no staff on this ship made an effort to get to know you, remember your name or display a personality! Such a shame! Even the officers were no mingling omboard until the last day! Excursions def had some wasted time organizing, days in port were short enough yet time was still wasted! Santorini was a disaster! Four ships in port with over a two hour line for cable car as the tour just drops you off and doesn’t tell you about cable car until end when you started on a bus! We did not get any time to shop or enjoy Santorini as we had to wait in this line, people were fighting not enjoyable & stole two hours of my time and a missed sunset! UGH. On that same day a women on the bus picked a fight shouting curse words across the bus the entire day! The tour guide should have thrown her off yet said nothing allowing her to taint that part of the day! I paid good money for this excursion from the ship on an island I wanted to enjoy to have it ruined! Oh and let’s point out the alternative of walking down the cliff on the donkey trail for 20 minutes in donkey poop, which was not an option to save time due to my friend being hurt on day one due to ships negligence! Last day in Croatia was cut early forcing everyone to change a schedule just to hurry up and wait causing us to get back into port in Venice over an hour late! Added stress! I feel there is a long way to go and some considerable customer service courses needed here! Almost forgot the two days my toilet in the room would not flush! Reported it, was kept up till 3 am while a man worked in closet next to room to wake up with only 2 hours sleep and still not have a toilet that works! July 2019 Read Less

We picked this cruise because of the stops we've never seen before and it was our first time with Norwegian. Very disappointing for a ship that was refurbished in 2018 take a look at our cabin review. The buffet area didn't have enough space to sit when it started to get a bit crowded compared to other ships we were on and it was badly designed there was just enough space too walk by the drink machines. We went twice to the Aqua dining restaurant, under cooked steak the first time and under cooked pasta the second and last time. The casino was super cheap, there's a game that you put quarters,it makes other quarters drop and it has bills on top, we managed to get a $10 bill out and it had only 3 one dollar attached to the it. On a slot machine I got 24 free games it gave me $0.36 cents, I know they have to make money but come on! For most excursions they made us wait 30-45 minutes in the theaters.Last thing we had an excursion that started 2 hours late on our last day and it was supposed to be 4 hours, they stopped it after 2 hours so we had to complain about that, we were 6-7 of us with the excursion manager, he took all our cabin numbers and told us he would call us that night since we were all checking early the next day, never got any response so I had to go back to guest services and they only gave me 30% off (still fighting this one). This cruise line only seem to care about making money, first and last time with them. Read Less

We choose this cruise due to its itinerary. There was a limited choice for 7 day Greek island cruises. So we choose the Star as it was recently refreshed. However you can see and feel the age of the boat. The stateroom was clean and spacious enough for 2. Food quality was average to below average. The best food was served in the open seating restaurants and we had the best meal at Aqua. Never used the buffet but it was very crowded during breakfast hours. Get ready to wait 30 minutes to na hour to get seated. We will do all future cruises only with assigned seating. Do not bother paying extra for special dining. We ate at both steak houses and meat was cold, over cooked and of low quality. We also have been disappointed with the service on board. You could feel that there are issues on the boat as most employees did not enjoy their job and it showed. Worst experience was waiting in line for over 1 hour to get tender tickets. At our first stop in Kotor, we almost did not make it even after standing inline for 1 hour to get our tender tickets. Received group # 17, so you can imagine when we got off the boat. Another issue was the length of our stops. Most of them only lasted a few hours, so everything was rushed. We booked all excursions through TripAdvisor and saved over 50% on most of them. Overall we do not recommend this ship. Read Less

While the cruise itself was pretty good, the total mess up be NCL of the disembarkment killed all the joy we had. 2 1/2 hours to get a taxi because guest services on the ship told us they would be at the port so we didn’t need to schedule one. That was a joke. It was our first cruise and maybe our last. Everything we did on board they wanted money to give us the information we were supposed to get in the seminar. I.e., how to increase your metabolism. Teas to heal the body. Bingo etc. the ports were nice as we booked excursions at each. We did find out we could have picked someone at port for the same excursion at half the price. Go figure! The shows were ok. A few better than the rest. And you couldn’t swim in the pool the water was to cold for us. The only issue with the room was the size. Had to squeeze by to get to the other side of the bed. And the toilet area was a joke. We had a mid ship balcony on the 10th floor. Well good thing we didn’t put down a deposit for another cruise!!! Read Less

Chose this for an extended family cruise (3 suites) for our 50th anniversary. Panama Canal on our bucket list. The cabin was nice, cabin steward attentive, and the restaurants were OK but not something to write home about. Entertainment meh. We did enjoy the talks about the Canal. Customer service desk personnel were unacceptable and mostly just angered us by blaming ship problems on us (it was somehow our fault that the batteries in the cabin door locks failed twice). The Bistro restaurant was our first choice (we did 4 extra-cost dining experiences). The main dining rooms (Versailles and Aqua were OK, but the food was only OK. Strangely, the onion soup at the Bistro was excellent but really poor at both Versailles and Aqua). Tepanyaki restaurant gave a very good show; food was like Benihana. There's a big current focus on using hand sanitizers--understandable given norovirus outbreaks. There was one "washy washy" girl (as they called themselves) in the Garden Cafe who made the most of this--super friendly and entertaining. Kudos to Hannah. Promises that we would somehow be compensated for 2 days without toilets, 1 day without water, and having to lock our door fail twice proved to be empty promises, However, I did have a long talk with the head of hotel operations, and he seemed genuinely concerned about our experiences. By the way, it wasn't just our room that had major plumbing problems. The 12th deck bathroom immediately above our room overflowed into the hallway and many other cabins suffered without toilets for some days (including one of our daughters' cabins). The internet only worked sporadically and was basically down for most of 2 days in a row. The average age of passengers was noticeably older than previous cruises we've been on. Read Less

We really wanted to love this cruise but Norwegian falls short. We upgraded to a balcony room to recieve the free at sea offers. Balcony room was good. It was very clean and our room staff was wonderful. We wanted to arrive in LA a couple days early but our flights could only be booked for 1 day early. I called 2 months early to ask if we arrived in LA early on our own, could we skip our departure and just use our return flight. I was advised to call when I arrived in LA, as long as i called within 24 hours of the flight I could cancel the departure. Well we arrived in LA only for norwegian to say sorry we dont care what we told you, we are cancelling your flights. So we had no flight home! When we got on board we stood in the long line to ask guest services if we had to use the shore excursions credit on shore excursions, or if it was a credit to our room. We were told it's just a credit to the room so throughout the cruise we thought we were using a credit, only to find out on the last day there was no credit because we didnt book any excursions. The food was by far the best part of the cruise. I would say even better than royal carribean. The entertainment was hit or miss. Overall the customer service felt like a cheap cruise. The staff seemed overworked and unhappy. Usually my favorite part of a cruise is meeting and getting to know the bartenders and wait staff but none of them were that personal. Overall it was a cheap smaller cruise with a company that needs to nickle and dime its customers to stay afloat. If your looking for a cheaper option I would recommend carnival everytime over norwegian we were not impressed at all. Read Less

We stayed in the Deluxe Owners Suite. Our butler and housekeeping were top notch and need to be recognized as such. The concierge on the other hand completely abandoned her job when it came to my family and I. We had 3 of the 4 Deluxe Owners Suites and 3 other VIP rooms. Our group had a total of 11 rooms in the ship. One of the perks with the Deluxe Owners Suites is dinner reservations. Because NCL offered 3 days of ultimate dinning as a incentive perk to sell rooms on the ship they overwhelmed the premium restaurants on the ship, so my family and I who had purchased a total of 8 days of udp not only couldn't get into the restaurants, we left the ship with three unused udp dinners. All ports we visited were spectacular and fun. A "veterans" activity was in the schedule, it was at the 5 o'clock somewhere bar, the whole event was left to the veterans to manage. It was a very much missed opportunity. 4 of people in my group are coordinators for military reunions and all agreed NCL'S venue defiantly does not support any consideration when planning any reunions. I will say all the veterans made the best of the time. There was no assistance or help getting off the ship. In the past we have sailed in the Havens and Garden Villas and always could depend on our concierge, the ball was seriously dropped on this cruise. Read Less

2/15/19 - 3/1/19 NCL Star Panama Canal Voyage Top screw ups 1. Free internet, ha ha, ha, 250 minute perk what doesn’t work properly or frequently; isn’t free or useful. Waits at Internet cafe could be as much as 60 minutes. 2. Cable/internet stations FOX, MSNBC, BBC, were very frequently not available as is the case right now as I write this, Thursday, 2/28/19 beginning at 6:40 AM and continuing unabated at present. The Sunday, 2/24/19 Oscars was not shown. 3. You will pay $4.64 for a glass of soda if you do not elect a plan. However most of time Diet Sierra Mist was poured by can to glass not by fountain spray but only 50% of time would server give you the balance of the can; note: only Pepsi products are available but Pepsi No Sugar was not. 4. Watch out for catamaran whale watch from Cabo it’s run by children who seem more interested in loud music and serving you prodigious quantities of alcohol; but to be fair soft drinks and water are available and you paid for it all inside the ticket fee. Like a party boat for mid lifers. They considered a whale sighting to be a spout or the whale’s tail as they dive. Never closer than a 1000 meters. One of the kids is the Cetaecian expert he plays loud whale sounds and provides much inaccurate information about humpback whales. 5. Avoid the Garden Cafe at almost all costs; except for periods of time when large numbers of eaters are gone. All enjoyed slopping at the Garden Cafe trough. Soft pretzel nirvana! 6. Avoid all specialty dining except for steak at Cagneys. If steak is your thing; there’s plenty of burned meat odor and taste there for you! 7. Be aware of cultural anomalies among some of your fellow passengers; like their general aversion to order, inability to patiently wait in line for their turn and the need for necessary occasional silence when and where it’s called as a need!!!!! 8. When you arrive at NCL TERMINAL at the Miami cruise port carefully assess what the greeters for NCL are telling you to do as it may be sufficiently botched or confused that you won’t know what you heard. This was something I thought NCL had down but not on 2/15/19 9. NCL will send you color coded luggage tags for embark; but you HAVE TO ASK FOR THEM. Otherwise you’ll need 8 ft of tape and print out cutouts online and then attach them yourself. 10. All Ports of Call are at best marginal and depressed. Let’s face it if they were all St Barth’s it would be a lot more expensive and after all you get to see how the Canal works. 11. Disembarking on 3/1/19 was an exercise in futility; for 3 and 1/2 hours we waited 3 hours of it in line to get out of NCL terminal. No announcements of any kind were ever made and no explanation was ever made to explain the delay; no bathroom facilities were identified; there were a number of fatigued or ill older people who should have been treated better; best bet appeared to be to claim wheelchair access need with the requirement for NCL staff to push the chair; which allowed for express debarkation of the person in the chair and their entourage, which was often as many as 3 additional people blithely passing those waiting for hours in line. - [x] People with apparent disability, which I defined as being in a wheelchair or similar conveyance, were present on the ship in what appeared to be anecdotally but positively high numbers to their and NCL’s credit! What was not clear were the express rides which all wheelchairs seemed to get as described above. It was simply unfair as NCL had asked passengers, able bodied and otherwise, to declare their need for early debarkation to get to airports for early flights. These express rides were much later in the debarkation process. NCL needs to mend fences with CPB In Miami FL to get a better working relationship with them rather than the blame put on CPB for the line and delay by at least one NCL agent. CPB needs to be open to such negotiations and to work equally hard to reach agreement and reduce their mutual disagreement which VICTIMIZED ALL DEBARKING PASSENGERS and nobody else. I’m confident that all NCL and CPB staff were paid for their work. Right now I can’t see myself returning to NCL to cruise again. Read Less

We choose this cruise to go through the Panama Canal. From day one, it started out bad. Our one son purchased the Ultimate Drinking package, but it didn't show up on his account. Even before leaving Los Angeles, we went to the front desk and said he had it on his account. We called the agency we had booked the trip and told her the issue, she contacted someone at NCL and he sent 4 emails to the ship, which they said they never received. He even showed them a snapshot on their website showing he had the drink package. It took 24 hours before they said he had it. The staff from the waiters to bartenders seemed like they didn't care if you were there or not. Entertainment was terrible, shore excursions were expensive, and if you get sick, prepare yourself for a hefty bill. My husband got sick with bronchitis and his medical bill for 2 days of treatment was over $5700. My one son went down to medical for a bad cold and his bill was over $1000 and charged him $150 for a box of Cold and Flu 24 gel tabs. GET MEDICAL TRAVEL INSURANCE before you leave. Because your gratuity is automatically added to account daily, the staff really doesn't care. We tipped the servers individually who gave great service. You can also go down to the front desk and ask for your gratuities to be taken off your bill. Quite a few passengers were doing this. It seems like NCL doesn't really care about your complaints, although when we sailed on the Epic, it was extremely good. I doubt we will ever sail on NCL again. We did meet fantastic fellow passengers and all of us agreed that this was one of the worst cruises they had taken. Read Less

I booked this New Year's cruise for DH, DS and I to take them to the Mexican Riviera and have a fabulous holiday. It was an expensive cruise over the holiday also. Embarkation was smooth and went quickly, no complaints there. The cabin was fine, nothing special, normal balcony room. There was a maintenance issue; the shower leaked out onto the carpet near the bed. Not sure it was ever totally rectified, but a fan was put in to dry the area and someone sent a bottle of wine as compensation for the trouble. Cabin steward was good, and provided towel animals after the first night. Dining and service was where this ship had serious issues. I have an allergy, informed them well in advance, met with the designated person after embarkation and pre-ordered all my dinners. It was great they had a designated person, and he thoroughly worked in my best interest. However, because I pre-ordered, I expected the kitchen to modify the recipes to make the food enjoyable, not just leave off ingredients and essential elements of the dishes (i.e., no sauce in place of hollandaise). This was not just in the MDR (Versailles, Taste was somewhat better), but the specialty restaurants as well, Cagney's and La Cucina (Moderno was the exception, and was fine). It was not just my food that was disappointing though, as DH and DS agreed none of the food in any of the venues, except for Moderno, was up to par. Cagney's was downright disappointing. While the service in Moderno's was very good, the same could not be said about Cagney's or the MDR. There were very long waits for drinks, food courses, and no one ever came by to ask how the food was; it was like they knew and didn't want to hear the issues. I had to waive the server down in Cagney's twice to inform him my food was inedible. I spoke with the manager, who informed the server to bring me something else. No apology, no offer for another meal on a different night. We decided to have dinner on New Year's Eve in the MDR, thinking it would be something special, but the service was terrible, the food barely edible, and the entire experience disappointing. I was embarrassed to have brought my family on this cruise for a holiday. Service at the bars was somewhat better I have to say, and in general, it did not take long to get a drink at the bar or sitting at a table in the common areas. DH says they really have to work on their beer selection though. The one common area where service was entirely lacking was the front sun decks of the ship. Not one server ever came in that area that I saw for orders, despite repeated requests to the bars where we had to go to get our own beverages. The dining room staff at guest services were wildly unhelpful. I stood in a very awkward line that necessitated one to stand in foot traffic area for 30 minutes to get my son the dining package. Then, I had to stand in another 30 minute line to get the other guest services to put it on his card. This made no sense, since the two areas, dining and guest services, were co-located. I asked to speak with a manager, and she walked away from me as I was talking to her. The rudest treatment I have experienced on any ship. Entertainment was good, but not having as many venues as the larger ships was very noticeable (no comedy club or dueling pianos, no entertainment at the Sugarcane Mojito Bar). My son just turned 18, and unfortunately there was little for him to do without the benefit of the teen club. He still made a few friends on the baskeball court, but there should be more for the 18-20 set besides what he said was a lame, poorly attended meet and greet in the 5 O'clock somewhere bar. Some of the newly created areas on this ship were just strange, apparently owning to the recent refurbishment. The Mojito Bar was part of Moderno, and did not seem to be a bar/lounge area at all, but just a restaurant bar to serve Moderno and Cagney's. Spice H2O was just a big covered area that did not have a water feature (though there was a hot tub stuck awkwardly in one corner), or a big screen for movies, just a few TVs showing music videos. I think, instead of trying to pigeon-hole all the ships into having the same named areas, they should think about retaining a ship's unique character. Naming the areas the same creates expectation that are sometimes not achievable. I took one excursion, a whale-watching trip and DH/DS took a beach day, both at Cabo through NCL. My excursion was delayed by several hours, which I only found out upon arrival at the pier. There were no alternatives other than a refund, but all the whale watching tours offered by independent tour groups were gone, and it was the last port, and thus, last opportunity for this excursion, so I waited. The group that took us out were very entertaining, the ship beautiful, and the service of included drinks wonderful. We saw lots of whales (smaller ones), and several breaches, so a good trip. My husband loved the Exclusive Beach Resort day. My son went son his first wave-runner and had a blast. In Puerto Vallarta my husband and son went on an independent zip line tour and said it was great. I walked along the water and landed at a beach. We got an independent tour guide in Mazatlan, ending at a restaurant, and had a nice meal of seafood, including lobster and ceviche. We all decided we would return to Mazatlan, Cabo and Puerto Vallarta if we had the chance. However, we all also decided we would avoid the NCL Star. Read Less

The cruise was the least enjoyable out of all the cruises I've been on and I've been on a lot. The main dining rooms were terrible. Horrible service & the food was average at best. The Aqua dining room felt like a cafeteria. The service at the other main dining room was better but not by much. At Cagney's we waited 14 minutes just to order a drink. We sat right next to a counter where dirty plates, etc. were right next to us. My son had shrimp cocktail & the glass was chipped in multiple areas. I hope it was chipped prior to him receiving it. At the main dining room for example my wife ordered coffee & desert at the same time. Got her dessert & finished it before the coffee came. I ordered 2 entrees & only 1 came. She also got a dessert spoon that was never cleaned. It had chocolate all over it. I can go on & on. We scheduled 2 different spa treatments at the same time. When we got there they told us one of them was a half hour later. That was not true to we were accommodated. Then we got back to our room & had a message that we missed our appointment & the time they said was an hour earlier then we even scheduled. The Norwegian internal app that we paid for was terrible. It froze all the time when chatting & we had to constantly reset the app. What a waste of money. The days of the cruise itinerary on the app were incorrect the entire cruise & if you went to click on those days to see any reservations you had not all the days worked properly. The windows in the relaxation area of the spa were disgusting. Every single one of them was completely dirty. The casino dealers other then 1 or 2 were so unfriendly. We gambled every night & felt like we were bothering them. The pit bosses other then one of them were not friendly at all. The Ultimate Beverage package for example is way too expensive compared to other cruise lines & does NOT include bottled water as other cruise lines do. For example you charge $99 per person not including water & Carnival charges $52 & includes bottled water & an 18% service charge not 20% as you do. These are just some examples. I managed to enjoy my vacation but was extremely underwhelmed by the cruise. By far the least impressive I've ever been on & I will look to another cruise line for my next cruise vacation. Not one thing stood out. Please see some pics below of what I referred to above. Read Less

We were on the New Year’s Cruise 2019 of the star and paid for our Garden Villa about US$ 30'000 for a week. Included was an “Ultimate Beverage Package” with a value of about USD 100 per day….. The suite is great but the suite is on the wrong ship. The service of the butler and of our steward were excellent. The remaining service of the ship (including the concierge) were unacceptable. There is a sliding door to room 14500, but on the top and the bottom of the door was a whole 15 feet long and 2 inch wide. You hear every word from the other room (and all the noise from their piano). After my intervention, they repaired it provisionally. However there was still a cross ventilation and the noise was not reduced to a quiet level. I tried to discuss with the concierge the value of the “Ultimate Beverage Package”. The price of the package was USD100 per day. I asked the concierge, if coffee is a beverage, she answered with yes, I asked her what means ultimate, she told me everything, I asked her why coffee, which is a beverage and is not included in the package. The concierge told me the package is a alcoholic package. I asked her why Coke is included and she denied any further conversation…. I had a similar discussion about the Dining Package….. The food was terrible. First day in the Steakhouse the filet mignon was well done instaed of medium, the second try was rare…. In the Aqua Restaurant the food was like my experience in my military service. In La Cucina the food was really good (however the service was like in Italy, what made the experience authentical. As a suite guest we had breakfast at Moderno. The atmosphere was very cold…… Best and lovely service I had was at Aqua, I still miss the laugh of Rosalyn (or similar) Read Less

Based on the daily information showed O'Sheehans lunch open @11:30 my family went and the lady told us they need to clean up and won't open until @12:30 with rude attitude. After more than one hour waiting we finally got seats and the service was very slow. Entertainment was very poor. All entertainment activities closed at 10pm. They even lock-downed shuffleboard and ping pong table. They didn't offer much things to do on the cruise. There was some good thought. House keeping was good. They clean our cabin several times per day and always keep it clean. The two stars are for house keeping. Read Less

Service of crew members was excellent. Reception at the front desk was some of the friendliest and most helpful that we have ever experienced, regardless of the issue discussed. For some reason, Norwegian seems to be promoting drink packages and I believe they are cutting their budget for food ingredients to pay for them! Soups and sauces were watered down, meat cuts tough, selections limited. I do not know if this is fleet wide, but at this time I would not recommend the Star if you are looking for fine cuisine. Many other guests seemed to agree and it became a topic of discussion that we did not originate. We heard enough complaints about the "specialty restaurants" that we did not bother to go. The shore excursions were about as expected, with competitive pricing: there were too many "shopping opportunities" for us, but that is always a matter of individual preference. Read Less

I will write a free association ramble, sorry if I repeat myself. The food was very disappointing in all areas. The public dining rooms as well as the specialty restaurants. I had 3 very good surprising meals. Moderno, Bistro and one dish served one day during lunch in the garden cafe. But overall the food really was very disappointing. Terrible onion soup even in Cagney's. The mac and cheese was not cheesy at all. I can go on and on but in the end given how much you folks say how NCL is all about the fantastic food and in reality the food was pretty bad overall. Our room cabin was 5650 for DEC 21st 2018 cruise. The placement of the bed was right next to the fold down bed and myself at first kept on banging my head on the fold down bed. After the 3rd time I changed sides with my wife and she also banged her head 3+ times. What a bad design of the room. The room was smaller then even the smallest inside cabins of the other cruise lines we have been on. The worst part of the room was that it was under the kitchen and almost throughout the entire night I could hear some kind of very loud compressor going, items being dropped on the floor, barrels or something very large being rolled around over our heads.. who knows but the noise was at times loud enough to wake us up and keep us from sleeping a few hours each night. The large auditorium where you have the shows.. who ever installed ALL the seats have put them at a weird angle such that when your sitting on them it feels like your going to slide down them onto the floor. Of course you wont because there was no legroom so one is wedged in pretty tightly.. So yea a very uncomfortable auditorium.. Best seats in the house was the handicapped seats and they went fast. By the way the entertainment was really great. Tim the comedian was funny as all heck. Your staff from the captain down to the folks cleaning the room I can see work really hard. Unfortunately they cannot compensate for the physical issues of an older cruise ship. Of course the food can be improved upon. Portion sizes were small at best. Sometimes salads came with barely any salad in them and the main course was dished out like one was in prison. Bottom line it was very clear they were doing their very best to keep their food cost under control. So such thing as an american sized serving.. of course one can always order more food.. still it shows they want to save money not only on serving size but in quality of the food as well. OMG the french fries were the absolute worse in both the main dining hall and up stairs in the pool area grill. I am not sure how those french fries were made but really they tasted like eating dried out card board.. Why even make the effort only to put out such a bad product. I know its all about saving money!!! Overall NCL at this time would be that last cruise liner I would book a cruise on in the future. The poor layout of the room. No chairs in the room, only a makeup stool, really?? Banging our head on the fold down bed because there is no room to climb out of the bed on that side. A bathroom with sharp edges where one could be hurt if they slipped or the boat rocked to hard. The food was cheap, and it was evident of the cost savings. No Smoked salmon / LOX for bagels just a smoked salmon/cream cheese mix. Sauces on all dishes were extremely light, just the bare minimum even in the specialty restaurants... on and on this went during the whole cruise... And the noise, electronic throbbing/pulsing of some type all night long in our cabin from the kitchen above.. anyway, we paid about $1k per person for the trip, another $240 total for the specialty restaurants which really were bad except for the french and brazilian, paid about $400 for massages which my wife loved, excellent message staff. Another $1k to travel. So we paid at least $4k all in all for just a below average cruise. My expectations were much higher after all the boasting you folks did about both the ship and the food. This ship and the food really was in the minor league and truly not ready for prime time.. Nice effort but not in the same league as Celebrity or even Princess for that matter. You asked and now you know. Value for money? I won't be coming back. Read Less

We chose this cruise on NCL Star to Mexican Riviera, a repeat trip from a Carnival line 10 years ago. We are frequent (11) cruisers, and this was by far our WORST SHIP experience. We were assigned a rooms in the front of the ship, 8003 and 8005. We were not able to choose rooms when booking. The "Normal" noise level in the room was THUNDEROUS. There was no sleeping. We were told this was normal due to (depending on who you talked to) the anchor or normal noise due to the waves at the bow. If you were able to sleep for a few moments you were woken by 110 decibles and trembling rooms - enough for things to fly off the shelves. How NCL can put people in staterooms with this "normal" noise level is an atrocity. It's a statement to their desire to make money over passenger comfort that these rooms are used for paying clients. This was evident in several areas, such as "entertainment" being basically commercials such as "Better Body Without Botox" and "Non-surgical Face Lifts," etc. over what is traditional entertainment, hard sells in the gift shops, etc. Communication is poor, such as what movies are playing, where to disembark, time to be back on the ship, ship time (changes 4 times in 7 days and no clocks are available.) IF you decide to book on NCL, be forwarned that you must reserve your dinning accomodations prior to boarding or you will be left with only O'Shannah's with a very limited menu that doesn't change, the buffet, or a 90 minute wait for "MAYBE you get in." We did enjoy the shows and felt that the room steward and buffet staff were wonderful. Read Less

We are very active cruisers and although not 100% loyal we are mainly loyal Norwegian cruisers. Let me start by saying that the itinerary and overall travel experience was good. We had been into the canal but never through the canal and up the coastline so this was our opportunity. We had a veranda stateroom (9222) that was in very good shape on the Starboard side. First off the service for the dining rooms including O'Sheehan's was very, very slow. We found O'Sheehans to be the worst. On multiple occasions we witnessed very disappointed customers complaining and even getting up and walking out. This involved both getting initial service (15 minute waits just for water) followed by long waits for food. I have to be honest here we have cruised on 5 other Norwegian ships multiple times and the service dining on the Star was by far worst than any other experience. I did take the time to speak with Adine (I seem to recall that name) the Restaurant Manager and he assured me we had just hit an "off afternoon" but that was not so as it continued with a little improvement only. He was very polite so I am not trying to throw him under the bus here but he stated " Star had recently been renovated and 80 seats added to "O Sheehans without enlarging the kitchen and it is an issue." Maybe Norwegian Executives need to know this and help correct the problem? Our other dining venues were not nearly as bad as O'Sheehans, although there seems to be the "specialty" missing from the upcharge specialty restaurants as we ate 5 meals in them and there really is nothing special about them anymore. Because of the recent renovation the ship was in good shape so no complaints here. The Housekeeping team was great and earned our rave review as they took care of everything on a timely basis! The entertainment was up and down. This could be because of our preference though as others may have felt all was great. We really liked the Comedian and the Flashback Four. Amazing talents the sang very difficult selections. The bar staff was over-all good especially at 5:00 Somewhere lounge. I do wish that lounge was open earlier in the day though. I thought the Captain and his staff were ok but not nearly as visible around the ship as we are used to from the other Norwegian ships we have cruised on. On opening night the Captain gave his opening welcome chat and did not promise a great cruise but "guaranteed" it...…….something he could not follow through on. The cruise Director was less engaged than we are used to seeing but his Assistants Phillip and Marta and his team were very engaged......kudo's to each of them! Finally the ports were ok but I certainly felt skipping Acapulco for a safer port that offered more would be appropriate. It's hard to feel safe with all the Military and Police carrying automatic weapons and lots of them. We really enjoyed Cabo and spent the day at a marvelous "All Inclusive" called Breathless. It was very nice and relaxing. I would recommend this cruise as the canal is amazing and the narrator on board was very informative. I think that other Norwegian ships would have made the trip more enjoyable and that there is room for much improvement with this crew, hopefully these shortcomings will be addressed. Read Less

We looked forward to this cruise for over a year. Last time we cruised with NCL meals were awesome, entertainment top notch, service was excellent and staff very friendly. We purchased extras on this cruise, unlimited beverage package, tour package and paid gratuities. During this cruise it was very hard to have someone to take a drink order while around the pool, you had to go to bar and order your own drinks. Highlight of the cruise was our waitress in the Gatsby Lounge she was awesome and spectacular, along with our speciality restaurant Cagneys. The Garden grill had same boring meals breakfast, lunch and dinner. Complimentary Dining Versailles and Aqua hands same meals each night. If Lobster is on your plan or a nice steak sorry your out of luck. Size of appetizers are so small, I ordered Rack of lamb and was looking forward to it and was completely taken back when plate came to me with some kind of shaved meat. Every meal I ordered was the same except for when I order the Fish and Chips from O'Sheeans it was LongJohn Silver quality. The tour in Cano San Lucas highlight of tours. Not sure I will cruise with NCL again unless changes are made. Disappointed. Read Less

I do not believe I will ever travel on NCL again. The staff was fair to say the least, of course there were some that were excellent but they were very few. Most were not very personable. The dinning and food was terrible unless you were in the specialty dinning areas (which you have to pay more for). The anytime dinning was not convenient, if you did not pre-book your time before your cruise you had to wait to get a seat or go late at night, Or go to the buffet (which I did not care very mush for that food). The seats in the theater were so tight that anyone over 5.5 feet tall their knees hit the seat in front of them. There was very few areas to just sit and read or play cards and if you had more then 4 people in your party you could not find a table anywhere to play cards. The shore excursions were nothing to write home about and the entertainment shows were just awful, except for one show. Embarkation was just fair but again the staff seemed a little grumpy, not the sunshine smiles I am use to on other cruise lines. Disembarkation was the worse I have ever been through. And something that I have never seen before, we found mouse droppings in our cabin. Read Less

Just finished a Panama Canal cruise on the "newly refurbished" NCL Star. While not a major cruiser (15 cruises total) I unfortunately have to rate the Star's layout as Poor. While not important to some, I feel cruise ships should have a bar or siting area that is enclosed and shows a view of the ocean or pool area. The Star has neither. It does have an open area on deck 14 that views the pool but on windy or cold days...it isn't a place that I wish to sit at. In addition, the Garden Café buffet area is not set up well for either private or small groups...basically either square or rectangular tables that seat 2 to 4. Also, this is my first ever cruise that I have dined in a buffet seating that never was I asked if I wanted coffee, a water, a juice or even a refill. Poor to say the least. Maybe I have just had above average service on my other cruises. For the okay or good about the Star. It was clean and nice looking in the common areas. Food was okay but nothing special (I did not eat at any of the specialty restaurants. Bars were well staffed and wait times wasn't a problem. Quality of wine and drinks was very good. Wait times at the Chinese (free) restaurant could be one hour. Quality of service in the Main Dining room was OK...but, plan to take at least one hour if you have an appetizer, a main item and a desert. Only one time was I asked if I wanted coffee with desert. I rate the Main Dining room food and service as only good. Overall: Boat in good to great shape. Food OK but nothing special. Service has to be rated as on fair to sometimes good. Read Less

We recently did an eleven day southern Caribbean cruise on the Star. We had an outside cabin with an ocean view. The 1st night was ok, but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th we could not get any sleep because of something banging on the outside bulkhead. I called guest services and nothing was resolved. The banging stopped for 2 nights then a different noise like a heavy line or cable rubbing against the side of the ship. That finally when away and was replaced by slouching sound like water is a tank slouching back and forth. So no sleep. Guest services sent me a bottle of wine and some chocolate covered strawberries. I am sorry but that does not make up for a terrible trip. The day we were in St Maarten, we went back to the cabin in the afternoon for a short nap. We woke up to a toxic odor of paint solvent. I called guest services and they said they would send someone down right away. Well, he showed up 24 hours later, we could have been died by then. Luckily, the ship sailed and it dissipated the odor. The food: Most of it was unrecognizable and bland. The only thing with any favor was some beef stew at the Garden Cafe. The dessert sucked no favor, so we ate a lot of ice cream. At the Aqua and Versailles restaurants the only eatable entree was the New York Strip, the rest was garbage. The Ginza Asian restaurant, we ordered sweet and sour pork, it was so bad that we left the plates full and when to the Garden Cafe. We ate lunch at O'Sheehan's Grill several times because they did make a descent burger much better than the Topsider Grill. Entertainment: The entertainment was overall pretty good. The best was the singer Jenene Caramielo, she was fantastic. If you ever have the opportunity to see her show do not miss it! The Russian high wire act good also. The other singers and dancers were good also. We have been on several cruises from different cruise lines, this was the worst experience overall. They should have given us a refund instead of a bottle of wine. I could have asked for a refund of the gratuity but I did not want to punish the cabin steward. Read Less

This fall my husband and I traveled from Rome to Miami on a repositioning cruise on the Norwegian Star. We had traveled on the Star before and had not liked the layout of the ship because it lacked quiet bar areas for reading and viewing the ocean. Norwegian touted a complete renovation of this ship so we thought we would give it another try. Quiet space was harder than ever to come by. More of the spaces had been converted into villas and suites for the wealthier clientele. Every time we found a quiet place, once of the crew would start up a game of something which drove us out. We have been latitudes club members for years and my husband was looking forward to at least receiving his silver pin on this cruise. We found out they have eliminated most of the little perks that used to be there for members. The member party was really a sales pitch for future cruises (kind of like when they try to sell you condos.) The one port we had never been to was Madeira. That port was cancelled because they had to spend extra nights in Barcelona on a major engine repair. I understand the engine repair is for our safety. The part that bothered us was that the Captain lied to us and told us there was rough weather in Madeira and that was the reason we could not go there. Any fool can google the weather these days and know he was covering up the fact that our ship needed further inspection before we hit the Atlantic. It seemed that Norwegian had changed many policies and turned them into sales pitches and additional fees of various types. I am a gold member of latitudes (which means nothing, except I can get a bag of laundry done for half the price...big deal). There are many other cruise lines that value their customers and I am going to change ships and find them in the future! Read Less
