We are experienced cruisers. We got together on a cruise ship. We even got married on a cruise ship. We chose this cruise because NCL always seems to have specials and we wanted to give them a try. The Sun seemed comparable to Carnival Pride. Moreover, the ship was leaving around the time of our first year anniversary. I really wanted to like this ship and this line. However, save your money, folks. This is the worst cruise ship we have ever been on and for the first time ever....we were bored. Let's start with the first day. People were so sloppy drunk, I thought someone was going to fall overboard. And the worst part? The drinks and most bartenders were terrible. The bartenders couldn't even remember drink orders. One walked away...out of the bar...after we ordered. The food in the main dining room and the breakfast was not good at all and it sits out way too long. Crunchy pancakes, really crunchy waffles, wilted bacon, etc. The salad dressings all tasted like mustard. The hollandaise sauce tasted like mustard. The pizza was burnt at the bottom. Stick with the food at the pub. We saw our housekeeper once. He never really introduced himself. In fact, the customer service severely lacks on this ship. It is almost like the staff doesn't care. Don't go to Guest Services if you have a question. They will not know the answer or will give you the wrong answer. Our tickets for our excursions were delivered AFTER the excursion. We had to go to the excursion desk to get them. Also, they changed our itinerary due to Hurricane Dorian which I completely understand. However, it doesn't appear that they are refunding our port fees for Grand Bahamas or Great Stirrup Cay. When you ask Guest Services they don't know anything which basically means no. The casino? We are big casino players. NCL won't be getting our money. Their minimums are too high. Their slots don't even let you connect with a game. It was awful. The specialty restaurants had great food. La Cucina had just splendid Italian that really hit the spot. The steakhouse is a must try. The drawback to these specialty restaurants? The service was poor. We had to repeatedly ask for drinks before we got them. We had to wait for 20 min for our cards to be returned and almost missed a show we wanted to see. There was a plus. The steakhouse did find out it was our anniversary and did a nice small cake. It was a really nice touch. We will be reluctant to try NCL, but if we do it will not be the Sun. Read Less

We wanted a cruise experience and the Bahamas. We sadly were disappointed with Hurricane Dorian. We had travel insurance but our travel agent suggested we go cause NCL made no changes to the itinerary yet the night before. We decided to go and not cancel cause we expected at worst we would reroute to 3 other ports. One day was not enough notice to cancel everything we had set up to go even with Hurricane issues we expected we still have fun. Well 1 day in Mexico in Cozumel and a half day was nowhere near what we had in mind nor worth the cost we payed for Bahamas. Esp since My husband had been once with his parents as a teen. . The food was awful no selection for a picky eater. The specialty restaurants were lacking majorly. The buffets were edible if drunk. Same stuff daily almost, sadly not much choice. Not usually a drinker but between all the disappointments. Thankfully it was inclusive drinks....... The pool being closed 50% of time, hot tub packed and the streaming package I paid for not working after day one. I lost business not being able to use my phone and check in on work i lost a few big investors, the 10$ line was a joke. The excursion booking by phone app accidental, we couldn't get refunded. Guest services were no help anytime we went there. They didn't cancel our trip or give any info prior to boarding that we go to Cozumel... My husband had been there and I had no wish to go there, but we had boarded the boat and didn't get any info to were we reroute until another cruiser told us on the ship not even our itinerary told us till the next day. Very disappointed to say the least the have no offered any discount on a trip to the Bahamas or a partial refund! I know that Mexico is way cheaper to visit then the Bahamas and we didn't port 3 different places Nor did i even get to see the beach once. We did one excursion dolphin encounter, it was the only thing decent and we didn't receive our photos by email as we should've. They had switched our group with another's they couldn't find our photos, when tried to look and purchase them. They finally found them under a different groups number! We bought them and it was a week later I had to contact them to send them again. Overall we had a trip we will never forget and we hope to make it to the Bahamas when the poor island rebuilds. Not sure I will be going NCL We almost booked Disney even though, we don't have kids. They had 11 pools and 3 adult areas and pools. We may have at least got some swimming pool time and hot tub time while stuck on the boat for 6 days when supposed be 4 days. The nightmare getting home was another story very disappointed about the lack of updating and knowledge they never provided us during the chaos. The sun would've been fine had we ported 3 days where we planned. we could've dealt with the other issues, we had in general but honestly for our first cruise nothing went right! Room tenant was awesome remembered our names was very diligent and professional. The gift shop was pathetic and the Spa was overpriced for the deep tissue couples massage we received. I wasn't even sore afterwards as should be. Not impressed at all. We are smokers it was windy and raining off and on they only moved smoking down a level one time to keep the wind and rain less awful. We had a balcony and this was honestly the best part of the boat. However we were under the pool area, it was very loud as they picked the chairs up and sprayed the upper deck barley got any sleep! As a regular cruiser we have sailed on several ships in Royal, Carnival, and Norwegian. So this is not only a comparison to other companies but even within the same fleet. So let's begin with the ship. The Sun is an older ship, so we knew it would not have all the activities as the newer larger ships, but did not expect was certain parts of the ship including our room had a consistent smell of sewage. This was prevalent from the moment we stepped in on level 5 through our current sailing as I write this on to New Orleans due to the hurricane. More on that later. State rooms, again in addition to the smell, they are so understaffed that they don't even make the towel animals. Now this is not a big deal, but there are no details on anything. You are getting the bare-bones basics, don't expect anything else. Furthermore, beach towels, we had to constantly ask for them, our porter would not leave any in our room though we got an initial set and instructed to leave in our bathroom the dirty ones to get new ones. Restaurants, on this cruise we planned to just eat with included location as we have sailed and enjoyed the other options. Let me say bad choice... the food is blah at best. Most meals were tasteless, the soups tasted like they came from a can. The buffet food was just to fill you up, but not flavorful. In the Seven Seas dining room we did have an amazing waiter which we ensured to have every evening Lief James is amazing and went out of his way to give amazing service. He learned our wine preference and would just asked if we wanted our usual. But the food overall was okay, the best thing we had was the honey creme brulee but most of the other meals were just okay at best. Sports Bar, in most other shops the sports bar run 24/7 but not on the Sun, you gotta wait till 5:30pm. It does stay open till 5:30am, but if you want wings for lunch, tough luck. Bars, are okay. They really liquor up the drinks. But about half the bar staff are so rude, especially in the pool area. There was one Peruvian bartender who was funny and very nice to everyone but can't say the same about the rest of the pool bar staff. Activities, though their shows in the theatre were great, the rest of the ship activities are lacking. So the Cruise Director was MIA most of the time, had the personality of a shoe and shouldn't be directing activities at a daycare, little less a cruise ship. I spoke to many of the bands on board as they were pretty good, but it seemed their schedules were off, when I asked this director was new and changed it, so rather than having their top dance/party band playing the club to get people dancing, they would have them play an acoustic set in the atrium. Now about our storm experience... We were on another NCL ship when hurricane Maria went to South Florida and though a stressful experience, the ships staff on the Sky were amazing about getting information out... On this ship it has been a super horrible experience, each staff member you ask, you get different information. The Capt and Cruise Dir have been putting out bits of information and leaving much to speculation and creating havoc. Even worse, we were not allowed to cancel our cruise beforehand, only went to Cozumel though part of our charges included port charges for 3 ports, and no mention of credits or discounts on future cruises, which had been done previously. This specific part is on NCL and not the ship. As I mentioned before, my family and I have taken at least 6 other cruises on both NCL and other lines, this is the worst yet. If you are set to go on the Sun, I highly recommend recommend going on another ship. Read Less

We chose this cruise as an upgrade over some Carnival Ships we have been on in the past. This was a total disappointment. This was the Norwegian Sun out of Port Canaveral on 8/12/19. The main issues were that we were very late for 2 of the excursions, the food was not very good and the service was poor. Original schedule was for us to arrive on the second day to Key West at 1 o’clock. We did not get off the ship into Key West until 4:45 PM and we were told to be back no later than 8 PM which is basically a three hour excursion. There were multiple guests that had activities where they used a third-party and did not get their money back or would have to apply for a refund . The next day we were supposed to be at their private island Great Stirrup Cay at 11 o’clock. We were not able to board the ferry going to the island until 3 o’clock. We also were scheduled to be coming back at 8 o’clock resulting in a another excursion cut in half . The other issue with this is when you are waiting to disembark the ship they tell you not to engage in any other activities but wait in a common area to be called. So we sat around and waited two or three hours for each of these experiences while not being able to do anything else. The food on the ship was disappointing. The buffet was like a golden corral basic food. The finer dining restaurants had a few decent dishes but it was the same identical menu available in the two fine dining restaurants. A lot of the food even in these finer dining restaurants was like cafeteria or hospital food with little flavor. The service from the staff was also an issue. The majority of the staff including bartenders and waiters was that they appeared to be annoyed by the guests and seem to have a careless attitude about providing good service. Very little smiles or acknowledgment of the guests. On several occasions in the finer restaurants the waiter would approach the table and basically say “ what do you want to order”, with no other comments or questions. In some instances we had to ask for our own beverages without being requested. I travel for a living and have been on other cruises and this was different. I understand what quality customer service is and it was not evident on this trip. When I would approach a staff member with a question no one ever seem to have an answer and the majority of the staff was not able to communicate basic english to answer common questions like “where is the bathroom”? Or “what time are we scheduled to be at our next destination?” Based on the investment we made we did expect more. We upgraded to the balcony and that was nice but felt we did not get our moneys worth. Based on this experience this will most likely be our last cruise, we have had better experiences and we’re hoping for more on this one. NCL has a reputation of being a better quality cruise line and that was not the case on this trip. I am also considering posting on blogs and sending an email to NCL voicing my frustrations. Buyer Beware-- Stay Away! Read Less

I wanted to try Norwegian. I have been on several cruises with Carnival and Royal Caribbean and MSC. The food in the buffet was terrible. The hallway to the cabins smelled terrible. The staff was rude and the casino cheated my husband out of $3500.00. We wasted our money and our time! When we got to Key West Norwegian wasted so much of our time to be at Key West. The food was terrible. To get any decent food you had to pay extra for it. The pool area was small and was always over crowded. The cruise line only has Pepsi products. I hate Pepsi products. The room steward kept interrupting is while we were resting or trying to get ready. He kept knocking on our door asking questions. Norwegian cruise line doesn't even make the cute towel animals. There was nothing done to make you feel special like the other cruise lines! Worst cruise ever!! Read Less

I got off the Norwegian Sun today after a 4 day cruise to the Bahamas with my mom. Are you ready for this tale? After boarding on the first day, nothing was open and the rooms weren't ready. When we went to the room, we were given a single bed even though we booked a double beds. We feared my mother's luggage was lost, since it was several hours without it at the room. I spoke with another guest who said that his luggage was put on the wrong ship. We tried to call our room attendant "Brianna", but the number was a busy signal. We called Guest Services, but the number was also busy. The luggage finally arrived around 9 PM while we were eating what tasted like frozen food or bad airplane food in the main dining hall. We then met our real room attendant who explained that the number didn't work because "she went home today on vacation." Not sure why they couldn't replace the card with the correct attendant's name and number? Shortly after eating/drinking on the ship, we would get horrible cramps. We did not know the cause until after looking up the symptoms on the internet today (the cruise charged $35 per device each day for WiFi) that we had contracted THE NOROVIRUS! Why did we contract the Norovirus? "Washy Washy" was not everywhere on the ship and we watched the workers clean the tables without gloves and without disinfectant. The ship was dirty and we saw crumbs on the floor and on the tables everywhere. The tables were cleaned with wet rags and food everywhere was not bussed. So much so, that seagulls would have feasts on the deck outside on the questionable food no one seemed to enjoy. Comfortable sleep did not happen because we didn't have working AC the entire trip. We called maintenance the first night to fix the AC, but there still was no cold air circulating in our room. We would feel cold air while passing other guests' rooms and in other parts of the ship. The repair man explained that the coldest our room was allowed to get is 73 degrees and the ship utilizes "chilled recycled ocean water." However, 73 degrees would have been tolerable unlike the 80 degree room that we had. We were sweating laying on top of the covers every night tossing and turning. Everytime we reached out to Guest Services, a person who could not understand English very well would get confused and tell us everything was fine. To make matters worse, our toliet would not flush and the sink constantly made a loud gurgling sound. The toliet was fixed a total of 4 times and the AC was "fixed" about the same amount if not more. The bathroom smelled of rank sewage, so we had to constantly spray hair spray in there to not gag every time we had to enter. The shower was also repaired twice, since only scalding hot water came out. We spoke with 4 other guests that claimed their room FLOODED! The toliet and shower eventually worked on the last day of the trip, but the AC never worked. We are leaving the trip completely exausted (and sick). The entertainment on the ship was beyond cheesy and usually involved the ship begging for more money. The ship's shops were desperate money grabs, much like the $5.50 bottle of Aquafina placed in our room to "tempt" us. The food was subpar and every meal oredered was taking a chance. During one dinner, I ordered French Onion soup because I thought how can you mess that up? Much to my suprise, that was bad too. The soup tasted like only beef stock and had no flavors of onion, salt, or bouillon. The ship also kept trying to pass off certain foods as gourmet. For example, one appetizer on the menu was "cream cheese and crab stuffed wonton with a sweet chilli sauce". Isn't that called, "crab rangoon"? We noticed a lot of interesting menu items that we believed to be recycled leftovers from other meals like adding bacon to sauerkraut. We picked snorkeling/beach day for our excursion in Freeport, Bahamas which came be to around $150. When we arrived to get on the bus for the excursion, we were informed that the snorkeling was canceled due to weather. The ship did not inform us earlier of this and instead loaded up a tour bus full of guests whom we suspect were charged the full amount for a 15 minute shuttle to the beach. Instead, we went back to the ship and asked for a refund. We then caught a taxi which only came to $14 for both of us. The White Party/Glow Party was held from 10:30 PM-12:00 AM the night before a port of call was 7 AM. The party took place by the pool deck and it was raining. The workers were squeegeeing the deck and the DJ was trying to get the crowd to come out from hiding from the rain. After the rain stopped, the crowd came out to dance and consisted mainly of small children. The DJ played EDM music for a bit, then switched to explicit rap much to the horror of the parents in attendance. They had a twerk contest on the stage and parents were taking their children to leave. A woman with a see through dress and a thong on got in the splits and began dancing like a stripper on the stage for everyone to see, kids and adults alike. There were other people on stage dancing that kept it clean, but she had to be pulled off stage because she was showing her buttcrack/vagina. There looked to be children watching as young as 5-12 years old. The DJ was blasting Cardi B songs and asked the crowd of kids to sing along to the explicitly laced lyrics. I left after that, since I had no interest in twerking around little kids. Small things such as crew members not knowing guests' names, no towel animals, and no drinks being served by the beach chairs were also a disappointment. We cruised with NCL in 2015 and had a fantastic time, so we suspect there must have been a restructuring within management. The cruise reaked of budget cuts and corporate greed. We suspect that the workers were paid very little and we were told that they rarely get to go home to their families in their home countries. Sorry if this was too much to read, but I did not want to spare any of the details. I posted this on NCL's Facebook page, but it was taken down by the moderators (suprise). Read Less

You could smell it 2 floors down in the dining area. The staff on the ship were not educated on events and where to go many times we asked. We have cruises many times and this was probably the most disappointing cruise we have ever been on. Our cabin was nice and we enjoyed having a balcony but when we tried to sit out there the people in cabin 8051 were smoking. We were not told this ship allowed smoking or we would not have scheduled a cruise in this ship. The staff when we got off the ship in customs were very rude to everyone getting off of the ship. We will probably not cruise with Norwegian again. Read Less

This was by far the worst cruise I’ve ever been on. At the terminal the guest representative was handicapped deaf and could not hear or speak understandably. Horrible ship in terms of layout and maintenance. They had poor customer service where the representatives do not understand English and most of the times do not answer their phones. This ship had filthy conditions, it was a hot ship, and had cheesy entertainment. Don’t expect clean conditions, proper air conditioning, working toilets, or temperate shower water (scalding hot only) in your room. Our room card for our steward provided a number that didn’t work and was told that the individual was on vacation! We were informed by other workers. This Ship is always warm and you really don’t cool off from the heat. The crew members Nickel and dime you for everything and the drinks are awful. Don’t expect the free coffee, lemonade, or water to be good either. Coffee is instant, water tastes funny, and lemonade is questionable. The free at sea unlimited drinks is a joke and they don’t make good drinks. You also get 1 small cup at a time and there’s always a long line. Got sick from either the improper food handling or the free water because I wouldn’t spend $5.50 for a bottle of Aquafina. For the entertainment, it’s all very cheesy. The White dance party is gone and now it’s a Glo party which is supposably family friendly, but they have rap music blasting or play Cardi B asking guests to sing along songs with the F bombs for all the younger kids to hear while they have a twirking contest with a woman in a thong doing obscene things on stage! Hardly something your kids should see! And out by the pool they had a man strip literally rip off his shirt, grind and do obscene things on the judges and then strip and wore nothing but his underwear! Also all the adult entertainment is held late the night before you arrive in port at 7:00 AM, and then again on your final night when you arrive very early as well. Poor planning on Norwegian’s part. Cruise with another company, NCL has changed, and not for the better. This cruiseline has become total trash. Read Less

This was my first cruise since I had my son five years ago. My previous cruises have been with Carnival. I will start with the positives—embarkation and debarkation were way more efficient than my experience with prior cruises. The specialty dining was amazing. I really enjoyed the private island. It was pure bliss! Beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. Now for the negatives—- The customer service was absolutely terrible. The night we got there my room was filthy. Dust, hairs, unknown crusty stuff in drawers—it was awful! I made a complaint—and housekeeping came and cleaned. Still had crusty bits in drawers and stains on pillows. The room was very worn. Chopped wood in dresses a and closet. The bathroom sink had a screw hanging out. Our steward didn’t even bother to turn down our room or anything on our last night. While most of the staff was incredibly friendly, the workers at the the customer service desk were rude and dismissive. The entertainment was so so, and I was definitely bored by the third night. We have been on several cruises from Carnival, Royal Carribean, and Disney Cruise Line. We have spent as little as $200 to as much as $1,000 per person on cruises. Before leaving we made sure we dotted all our “I’s” and crossed all of our “t’s” as far as passport and visas go. My husband has dual citizenship (Brazilian, and American) and his American passport was expired so we made sure that we could leave the country and come back with his Brazilian passport and naturalization certificate. We called a total of six times to the port and NCL to make sure we were good to cruise with those documents. Both the port of Canaveral and NCL customer services assured us that we were good to go with those documents. On May 20th we were ready to go (so we thought)…. We arrived at the port and the lady that was taking care of us seemed a little confused. Her name was Miranda. She was a very sweet lady however didn’t really know how to input our information etc… She asked a very nice lady (I’m assuming a manager) and the lady said our documents were fine etc…. Miranda continued to be confused as she had other questions so another manager by the name of David Johnson came to us and immediately urged us to go to the managers desk. We gladly went assuming that he would help us and expedite our check in. We reach the managers desk and another lady by the name of Kathleen Bianchi kept asking us if we could go home and get his “American passport”. We explained that it was expired and that we called six times to make sure we could travel with the Brazilian passport blah blah blah….. She insisted on us giving her names of people that we spoke to which we didn’t have. In the mean time Mr. David made copies of all of our paperwork and asked me bluntly, “Mam, I need to know if you will be boarding today without your husband?”. I was in shock!!!! I didn’t even know that it was a possibility that my husband couldn’t get on the boat. They NEVER apologized and acted in any way sorry for what was happening to us. There were NO lamentable feelings from them AT ALL…. We remained calm and very politely asked them to please check with immigration because we knew that we were ok to travel to Cuba with his Brazilian passport. Mr. David said it wasn’t “his job” to make sure of anything. It was “our” duty to ensure we had the appropriate paperwork. In the meantime, I advised my husband to call the duty officer at “custom and border patrol” (located downstairs from where we were). We called and spoke to officer Dusan who assured us that we were good to travel with the documents we had. He even advised us to ask Mr. David to look up the website page where it specifies the necessary documents. Again Mr. David refused. At this point Im done. Im thinking we’re not going to board and we should have just cancelled our cruise. My husband saw the young manager that initially helped us going to the bathroom. He ran to wait for her outside the ladies bathroom so that when she came out he explained our situation. She quickly spoke with Kathleen (whom at this point felt she could do something to help us) both ladies went downstairs and within FIVE minutes came back with the okay for us to board. O.K…… at this point, 3 hours later, I am exhausted, but relieved! Now it was time to enjoy our very much-needed vacation. We purchased our cruise for $1,546.18 (for two). We had done a Disney cruise a couple months prior for about the same price. I mention that because we expected this to be just as nice as the Disney Cruise. To our dismay…. It WASN’T!!!! We went to customer service every single day asking for the gift that our travel agent bought us and they denied the gift. Customer service kept saying the gift was never purchased and we needed proof. Unfortunately we didn’t snap a picture of the “proof” so we never received our gift. NO biggie….. Then, we purchased the water bottle package on our second day of the cruise. We only received it on the last day of our cruise. Everyday, I would walk to the bar and remind them that we didn’t get our water bottles and they kept saying it was on the way but we only got it the last day. When we looked up our cruise there was a deal going on that we had an option to receive one out of five perks for free. Since this was an open bar cruise, we decided to opt for free wifi. Again, customer service looked me in the eye and said we were not eligible for the free perk since we paid the cheapest rate for our cruise. Cheapest rate??? Really???? I didn’t think that almost $800 per person was the cheapest rate for a cruise. Oh…. Since this was an open bar cruise the service at the bar was horrible to say the least. I wont even get into those details. Food was “okay”… hit or miss. I was given a butter knife to cut through a steak that was super chewy and inedible. Server never checked back after food was served. Buffet food was disgusting. We ate at the buffet just once and couldn’t even go back because it was gross. I NEVER fill out surveys, I NEVER give bad reviews… I just don’t have the time to do it. However, the rollercoaster of feelings that occurred before we even boarded was so disheartening that I couldn’t let this go without saying something. It’s interesting that in the end, Kathleen (one of the managers) said this to us, “you know, in hindsight, I regret not taking 5 minutes of my time to go downstairs and gather the correct information for you guys”. That’s my whole point in writing this review! It would have all been a very different story if they had only taken 5 MINUTES of their “clock time” to make sure there was nothing that could have been done for us. We are hard working middle class people that was looking forward to a little getaway, and without any regards for us, NCL was quick to deny our cruise and never even offered any remuneration of any kind. For the reasons stated above, I would NEVER suggest anyone getting on the Norwegian cruise line…. EVER….. and I am writing this in hope that this never happens to anyone else. If we had “given up” we would have been out of luck. We would not have boarded and we would have lost our money. Read Less

Let me preface this review by stating that we have taken many cruises, on Princess as well as Carnival and have never had an unpleasant experience, until now, on Norwegian. When we choose to spend our hard-earned money on a cruise vacation, that price includes not only the monetary cost of the trip, but the use of valuable vacation days as well as the travel costs incurred to arrive at the cruise terminal. We could have gone anywhere, but we chose Norwegian’s 5 day trip to Cuba and Great Stirrup Cay. I am going to start with the worst of it. Let’s visit this premium alcohol package that was included in the cost of our cruise. Night #1, we are pleased to see some good wines on the list, available by the bottle, so we order them. Night #2, we order these two wines again, but after taking our cruise card, our waiter returns to advise that Norwegian is now out of these two wines. Really? On night #2? After dinner we stop at our lobby bar, where, surprise, they happen to have these two wines, as they did at various other bars and eateries on the ship. It is seems apparent that Norwegian trains its staff to cut off the premium wines once a passenger has had a bottle or two. Unacceptable. We paid for premium wines and were denied the items we paid for. Additionally when we requested a substitute, the waiters refused to provide anything comparable. The second issue we encountered occurred at Norwegian’s Great Stirrup Cay, where we had reserved cabanas, as we had elderly relatives in our group. The island/cabana area is infested with biting insects, in our case, no-see-ums, which immediately ravaged every person in the cabanas. This would have been 100% preventable if you had 1. been honest that there is a problem and warned your passengers about it, and 2. Stock cabanas with insect repellent. At no time was an insect problem ever mentioned. At no time was is suggested that we bring insect repellent to the island. Please see the attached photos of the aftermath of sitting in your cabana for approximately four hours. The current state of my literally hundreds of bite scars (one month later) is that they are dark purple and not fading anytime soon. What you need to know is that I run a Tanning and Skin Care business which requires me to be at the Colorado River, in a bathing suit, where I market and sell my products. Due to this horrific scarring on my legs and arms, I am completely unable to wear a bathing suit and promote my brand. This is no laughing matter, as I am losing money on a daily basis as a direct result of Norwegian's neglecting to address a very serious matter. Aesthetics aside, biting insects transmit diseases and due to the severe infection that resulted from these bites, I have scheduled a doctor appointment to have them analyzed for contagious disease as well as permanent damage to my skin. At this point I am formally requesting that Norwegian reimburse me for the premium alcohol package that I was denied, as well as damages for the physical harm I was exposed to resulting in permanent, disfiguring scars, the severity of yet to be determined once an official prognosis is reached. UPDATE 6/20/19 - Norwegian has thus far declined to address my concerns, rather, thanking me for the feedback. I have since obtained a dermatologists report indicating that the scarring my be permanent due to my skin type. Initially I didn't even mention the food, some of which was good, but again, not even comparable to other cruises I've been on (Princess). On our last night we'd reserved dinner in the Italian restaurant. A full hour after sitting down, our party of 14 still did not even have the cocktails we ordered. Other diners had come in, been served and left before we received our appetizers. We sat another 1.5 hours before finally requesting a manager and telling the staff to forget the courses, just bring everything, as we had to get up very early to disembark the ship. Most of us did not ever receive the apps/salad/soups that we'd originally ordered. I really don't anticipate getting any sort of compensation from Norwegian, however, I do intend to warn every one I can about their sub par ship, food and customer service. You have many choices when it comes to cruise lines - I strongly recommend NOT choosing Norwegian. Read Less

We choose this cruise for it 5 night itinerary because it went to Belize and we were very excited to get out on their famous reef. DISEMBARKATION WAS AN ABSOLUTE DISASTER! Another ship was at the pier, the Norwegian Escape, so our ship had to tender ashore. Apparently this had never been done because it took over 3 hours in lines for us to get off the ship. We have cruised at least a dozen times and never experienced anything like this. There was zero communication from the ships officers and NONE OF THEM WOULD EXPLAIN. To top it off, when we finally got ashore, it was too late to go into town and get out on the reef. We had read reviews that the cruise lines snorkeling excursion was more for beginners and we are experienced snorkelers and were planning on a more exciting day trip. We resigned ourself to a nice day at the beach, but it wasn't a nice beach. It was an OVERCROWDED, man-made ugly beach with coarse sand and murky water...... As for the two sea days, there are not sufficient chairs onboard for the passengers, so a day of relaxing in the sun was virtually impossible unless you went down at 8 am and didn't leave your chair unattended. I literally saw 2 men almost come to blows over a chaise lounge by the pool. There was plenty of room on the upper deck for more chairs so why not put more up there so everyone could relax????? The food in the buffet was below average, the food in the restaurants and main dining room however was very good. As far as the open bar, the drinks were mostly good but waiters by the pool were few and inattentive. Entertainment was also lacking. The cruise director was no one to be found. Not fun at all. The only enjoyuable entertainment was the comedian. We enjoyed our snorkel excursion-beach day in Costa Maya. It was the highlight of the trip. Overall, I would think seriously before going on this ship. Choose another. Read Less

This was mine and my husbands first cruise and our honeymoon. We were sold a drink package on a free-drink cruise. The food was horrible. We never had any wait-staff ask if we needed anything or how we were. Everything started with a 30-60 minute wait in a line. We were only left 1 wash cloth a day in our room. We never made an evening show because dinner would take 2-3 hours. My husband and I are up and out of our room early (5:30-6am) and the upper decks were always a mess - everyday! Beer bottles, wine glasses, plastic glasses, just trash/mess everywhere. We should have had 100 minutes of wifi - never happened and never could catch the IT person on board. One of our excursions we were unable to make due to Norwegian messed something up with the tender boats. Second stop our excursion was cancelled. This cruise was our first and last! So sad that we had looked so forward to our honeymoon cruise! I am so thankful that we are able to have fun anywhere or this could have been much worse. Norwegian really let us down! Horrible everything. Read Less

They asked for the measurements of my scooter which i supplied. Then i was told that the scooter could fit in all door on the ship. Which i found out was not true when i arrived on board the ship. Went to costumber service where i was told that where was nothing they could do about it. But they would rent me a walker so i could get around the room with my one leg. Or i could get off the ship. The bathroom was so small i had to use the shower chair to hop to the shower, then seat on it. the entertainment was not good. Had another trip on Norwegian for next but i canceled it. I am rewriting this review to insure that unsuspecting customer read an accurate accounting of our experience with Norwegian Cruise Lines. We all expect that such an adventure will not be “perfect” but seriously this company is the worst. With 20 cruises under our belts with Princess and Celebrity we were lured away by the enticing itinerary. Check in was pretty much the same old thing although most of our experiences for this portion were abroad. Aside from staterooms not being ready all appeared OK. The announcement was made about an hour and a half later that we could proceed to the staterooms as desired. It wasn’t until later in the afternoon that I noticed that the settee was stained with fecal matter. That was pretty nasty! I decided to walk down to the guest reception area and just happen to run into the Hotel Director and made him aware of the problem. It was handled very quickly. The “Sun” claiming to have been recently renovated was a pretty poor example of a refit and simply put you can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig. What a disappointment. Having been in the Yacht and Ship business for well over 20 years there is a certain expectation of quality which this ship, its crew and its services simply doesn’t have. Our first dining experience was in one of the two main dining room. The selection was beyond boring and when the service finally arrived some 30 minutes later we were met with attitude and unprofessionalism. I’m sorry I was under the impression that this was a dining room and not a cafeteria. We came to find out that no matter what you ordered it was bland, most often cold and especially dried up from being reheated. I for one refuse to play the upgrade specialty dining game. Why pay even more money for the same service and poor food quality? The breakfast buffet was beyond an interesting experience in that you consistently enter a war zone every time. Pushing, shoving and even grabbing food off the line with their bare hands. Line…. What line just cut in and grab what because you don’t need to wait your turn. The usual chaise lounge grab was in full play on at sea days and of course a fair number of chairs remained unoccupied for the entire day because someone put a towel on the chair on their way to breakfast at 7:30 AM just in case they wanted to go to the pool at some point during the day. There were enough scooters on this cruise to have a NASCAR race. Everything you hear non Cruisers talk about when siting reasons they would never go on a cruise came true on this cruise line. Not wanting to hassle with trying to secure excursions on the pier we paid the extra money for the ship’s excursions. For the most part these were acceptable but in one instance we registered for a walking tour of Cartagena, Columbia. Our guide Victor managed to manipulate our group stuffing us into three separate emerald stores ( high pressure sales) where he would register his name upon entering for his cut. Three emerald stores and a chocolate/coffee store later we were all but out of time needing to return to the bus to return to the ship. $150.00 later we got nothing. I mentioned this experience to the cruise director who promptly took down our information and of course absolutely nothing happen. There was essentially nothing offered except a beach club visit for $150.00 in Santa Marta, Columbia prior to the cruise. They posted a rain forest visit at the last minute apparently and by the time we found out about it they were sold out. We stood in line before dinner a few days prior to try and secure this tour and after about 50 minutes in line with about five people still ahead of us in line the excursion staff at the desk stood up and went thru the door behind them. Apparently it was time for them to close. No announcement, no one to come out and create a cut off on the line. Nope it was 8 PM and time to close. Tough luck! This sort of summed up the entire Norwegian experience. The ship’s entertainment was absolutely the worst I have ever seen on any of our cruises. There’s always maybe one or two acts that don’t get it done but this was just about a clean sweep of amateur entertainers. I was in awe as to how bad they all were. With all these pretty negative experiences I saw no point in submitting a review card onboard as it would most certainly be shredded long before management would ever see it. I decided to wait and wrote a letter to the VP of Investor Relations at the corporate headquarters in Miami. Would you believe that I never received so much as a call or even a letter. Easy to see that the attitude we saw onboard the ship must start at the corporate level. I then decided to write to the Chairman of the Board and once again nothing not a word. Not even a telemarketer. Norwegian we are done with you. You took thousands of dollars for us and don’t even have the decency to respond to our concerns. Read Less

In the beginning....emergency drill procedures: all passengers were crammed like sardines outside in the 93 degree sunshine and made to wait 25 minutes extra for late arrivals before starting. Several of us couldn’t make it through that heat with no water and had to stand inside to cool down, several older folks almost passed ou, 1 didt. The food was horrible. The staff were all brand new, inexperienced and untrained. The first day onboard the woman in front of us at the restaurant had an entire glass of ice water spilled down her back. The ship was dirty everywhere. Like they hadn’t washed the outside for a month. My balcony had rust all over the metal, dirt all over the floor. I didn’t want to touch anything without cleaning everything first. The glasses in the main dining room were served to us one chipped, and the other with lipstick still on it. They did not have anyone to spray people’s hands at the buffet doors. The shows were lousy. Every excursion was cancelled the entire week. The private island the ship hit a sand bar, so for everyone’s safety they chose to get unstuck and turn us away from the island. The bar waiters were not attentive. The bar staff were overworked and could not fill drinks for everyone. There were lines everywhere. There was nothing to do that was any fun. There were no good activities to go to that didn’t involve paying more money. NONE of the staff smiled or were happy, and they did not greet anyone, on the way onto the ship or for the entire week onboard. Smokers have been moved to one TINY area with no windows or ventilation. The internet I paid for never worked the whole trip. I tried to contact the hotel director onboard and did not receive a response from him. I just turned Platinum with NCL. They are so focused on rolling out new bigger ships but they are taking the good experienced folks from the older ships and there is no consistency in their “great customer service” policy. After months of waiting for a reply from GUEST RELATIONS, I finally received a form email explaining their policies. I never received a call back to my numerous attempts to actually speak to someone. They never offered me anything in the way of compensation for a horrible cruise and a wasted week. This past February I was on the Star and spoke to all management up to hotel director. Nice people. All of them. They tried to get another message to Guest relations for me, but never received a reply in the 14 day trip.... so I am back at square one. I have a case, I am a Platinum member and they do not care at all what happened or that I wasted over $5000 and a weeks vacation on a very poor trip. I have been told that NCL only reads cruise critic to gauge their failings. I have over 12 phone calls logged, two letters hand written and several emails sent to Guest relations with no satisfaction at all. Oh wait, I do have a case number! 02172327 although it’s apparently not doing me a bit of good. The guest relations coordinator did a very poor job of communicating to me, and never responded after sending me her form letter. Cristina Cuellar never had the courtesy to call me back even once to return all my calls. NCL customer service is awful. I am now thinking after 12 years and so many cruises with them it’s time to find a better brand, if I am paying top dollar, I expect the best! Oh lastly, I was told by an employee on board that although they raised the daily gratuities, the employees are not getting that money. It is going to build their new ships.... REALLY? It is hard not to sound harsh when you have such a terrible experience. I guess I can only be happy that we hit a sandbar and didn’t run into a dock? I did request corporate contact info for CEO office but was not given that information. Read Less

So we took a cruise in April for spring break on Norwegian and it was not a good experience at all. A few of my girlfriends decided to book a weekend cruise and Norwegian offered the short weekend cruise with the dates needed. I was hesitant but thought I would give them a second chance. What a mistake.... NEVER AGAIN! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! It started with a representative telling my friend an option to board without using her passport so she got on the plane to Miami and then was denied boarding at the port. Luckily we got a fax of her birth certificate but the supervisor said he would call back to help and still has not returned her call - this was Friday.... Norwegian has the worst customer service i have ever experienced. We could not get served at the bars, had to tip a waiter cash to come back and serve us and it took hours to get our food in the dining rooms. after waiting at a bar for 10 min and being overlooked and not served multiple times we tried a second bar. After standing in line for 10 min, i reached the bar. I ordered 4 drinks and was told i could only order 2. i showed him my friends in line behind me and gave him my drink order again. he repeated it incorrecty so i told him a third time and his response to me was this - you need to have your order ready because people are waiting in line! I was floored and never went back to that bar. we sat down to breakfast and ordered at 9:20. We then heard announcement that a crew drill was going to start at 9:45. One of our orders came just as the alarm was sounding and the waiter put the food in front of one of my friends. then told us his supervisor would follow up on the rest of our food. It finally came out at 10:15 and one of them looked similar to the first dish but slightly different and was not what my other friend ordered. the waiter brough over the ticket and said it was our mistake, but turns out the waiter put the first dish in front of the wrong person and the supervisor blamed us. After quickly eating we tried to get off the ship and got stuck between two doors for 5 minutes because of the crew drill. when the doors opened, the crew member shoved her hand in my face to get me to wait. she wanted me to wait until everyone on the other side went first instead of creating a two way flow but said nothing, just shoved her hand in my face. Noone said have a good day as we got off the ship or welcome back as we got back on. in fact one day we had to wait while the attendant finished a call to scan our cards so we could leave the ship. The sad part is that i have so many more examples that I could share - it was the norm and bad service was not just an exception. the entertainment - dancers and singers were some of the worst that i have ever seen on a cruise. the band was amazing and we thouroughly enjoyed the music by the pool when they were playing. The entire cruise had complete lack of communication. the first night show encouraged the passengers to get off early because otherwise they would have to get a ticket and wait to get off the ship due to tendering. So we took their advice but when we got to the island there was no food or bars open for 3 hours. Not once did they communicate that we should eat on the ship before getting off because there would be noone serving food or beverages (unless you wanted an $8 bottle of water) until 11:30 that day. we rented floats for $16 a float and used them while waiting for the food to open. We then stacked the floats by our chairs and went to eat. came back and the people behind us told us some guy and kids came and took the floats. so we went to the float counter and was told that it had never happened and we had to walk to other end of the beach area and talk to the office to get new floats. finally they gave us four new floats even though they had recorded us earlier purchasing 4. There is a consistent lack of customer service across the entire norwegian brand. It is so bad that none our group will ever select a Norwegian cruise again - especially considering the level of service you receive on Carnival/Royal Carribean and other cruises. Save yourself money and book with a different cruise line. See my other cruise review where i had the similar experience - Not a fan!!!! on the Norwegian Dawn in April 2018. I do not recommend Norwegian and will NEVER select Norwegian for any future cruise i book - same as the group of friends that went with me. Read Less

The only pleasant experience on this cruise was the hibatchi restaurant. Staff was not able to communicate important information. Day at private beach was missed due to weather.... so they say. Overpriced and underwhelming. Stains on room floor and hallways were constantly wet from what I have no idea. Plumbing for shower drain was not maintained. Site said there was a renovation in 2018....right. When concerns brought to guests’ services attention no resolutions were offered only dismissive apologizes with overbearing security looming over help desk. Sad. I will not utilize this line for anymore of our family vacations. We missed 3 hours at Atlantis because the shore excursions’ representative was too lazy to assist us properly. Spent an additional $30 on taxi to Atlantis after local assistance. Then no Rep could located to provide prepaid wristbands. The resort assisted us and finally were allowed entry. Worst customer service ever on a cruise. Read Less

They had to bring in a mattress to lay on it. The shower and the sink didn’t drain much at all and the room had a lingering sewage smell. The crew also wasn’t as helpful or friendly as I’m accustom to. Then to top it off weather prevented us from getting off on the private island so we were trapped on this floating garbage restaurant all day. I literally got better food at the gas station than I did on the entire trip on the ship. That being said, embarkation and disembarkation weren’t the best I’ve ever had. Quick and painless. To begin with, I only booked this cruise because it was going to Grand Bahama Island, which myself and my fiancé has never been to. However, before even leaving, the only destination besides the private island was changed to Nassau which we have already both been to 3-4 times, so that alone put a bad taste in our mouths, and Norwegian would not do anything to accommodate us for the port change that was the main reason for booking this cruise. Then once boarding, we found the food to be extremely underwhelming and the staff in the buffets, seven seas, and four seasons to be extremely unattentive and not at all friendly. Not to mention the food quality was sub par, I feel McDonald's has better food quality. To make matters worse, the food made us sick every day so in the end we decided just to eat pizza and nothing else. The entertainment on the ship was sub par or not even worth going to, and the ships staff aside from two of the bartenders unfriendly and rude. One night, my fiancé and I got dressed for dinner and to take some pictures the photographer was rude, demanding, and unfriendly, almost to the point of making my fiancé cry. Needless to say, we did not purchase any pictures taken on board at all. The ship itself was awful, it was so bad from the first night the halls smelled like vomit and urine all the way through. The final night, my fiancé and I decided it was a better experience for us to just hide in our stateroom on the balcony than be anywhere on the ship itself. Just overall, the experience with Norwegian was awful and neither of us will be sailing with this line ever again in the future and I will also be letting others know about the experience we had and that they should sail with another company, that Norwegian is not at all worth your time or money. I feel as though I took some of my hard worked PTO days of the year to have a miserable experience that I cannot get back. So upsetting and I would hate to have anyone in the world, go through what my fiancé and I went through. Read Less

I wanted to visit Cuba so I decide to take Norwegian instead of Carnival. What a mistake, it stated with the check in process. Checkin was reasonably simple, but it's the hurry up and wait routine, because as you check in you are not able to get on the boat there was about a 45 minute wait before we could board. We got on board at about 11:30 AM, but had to wait until 1:30 PM to get into the room, that's just too long considering we had a few bags with us that we didn't want to check. Next while headed to the disaster drills, I saw my bag just sitting in the middle of the hall way not even close to my room! Of course I couldn't get it because of the drill and people yelling please get to your station. After the drill the bag was still in the same spot so I grabbed it and took it to my room. Next was getting off the trip in Key West, after reading the material in my room we thought we were all set only to find that we were not. There was no mention of a ticket needed to leave the boat if at there was a ticket needed. This ticket was a total waste of time hour online to wait for it and it wasn't tied to me in any way meaning when they took it as we got off no on checked my name off of anything. On the way out people were lltalking and laughing, the security chief comes out and tells be quiet, with no other statement. First we are adults who paid to be on this cruise and I would expect a more respectful order and one stating why he need everyone to remain quiet. This brings me to the crew, they acted like zombies. No smiles, not personable at all, thought there were a few bright spots in the night sky and I did everything in my power to respond to them with a large smile and greeting to let them know I appreciated the lack of zombie like behavior! The covering of space made for a bad experience I was in one restaurant as it was changing over and no announcements were made, but they started locking door without so much as a word. I even had to ask them to unlock one of the doors because my stuff was just out side on a pool chair with my family. I would have been happy to move had I been given the opportunity. Activity schedule was a bit strange, Karaoke was only from 10-12 AM even though it was quite popular other things were like this as well. Lastly my excursion in Cuba. Again I read the information in my cabin and in my ticket envelope. I was told to be in the theater at 8:30 Am for instructions, they started giving out instructions well before that time. People were confused about the process, when they announced our departure there were no orders givin about lining up to disembark instead a mass of people just rushed the hallway doors it was a total mess. After customs our only clue where to go was to follow other people then once we got down stairs we saw a person directing us to the buses. The tour was an our late, while it was a decent tour we didn't get back u till almost 3 PM people were tired and hungry and asked about food , the guides only reply was I'll show you some places when we get back. This led to people leaving the tour group for food! With all of the Chaos I didn't enjoy the cruise at all! So disappointing!! Read Less

She NEVER replaced the pool towels either. Not to mention she never introduced herself to us until AFTER my husband lost his temper after having to wash with a HAND TOWEL in his shower. Our room bathroom smelled strongly of urine. The WI-FI WOULD NOT let us connect, yet they still charges us for it. Food was the same every day and it was just average. I had expected something a little.....more. Music was all Latin based and we could not understand it let alone dance to it. Everything closed at 8pm. Pools, basketball, etc... There was hardly anything to do on the ship. They did have planned activities through out the day, but there was only one thing going on at a time. Since there was literally nothing else to do on the ship, EVERYBODY was at the activities. This left standing room only every time. There were too many people shoved into these rooms. I am so glad that this was not my first cruise or I would never go again. This was a major let down and I am so sad I wasted all that money on this trip. Read Less

Where do I begin?! I chose Norwegian based on referrals from family/friends. First of all, our room steward never introduced himself to us and our room was only about 50% cleaned when we arrived. Our refrigerator did not work and after leaving a note, telling our room steward in person and calling the front desk it took almost 3 days to get a new one, even after mentioning that we had medications that needed to be refrigerated, that in the end went bad, so there goes all of that money!!! Second, I sent a dress to simply be pressed in time for the Cabaret show in Cuba, I sent it Tuesday morning so I would get it back by Wednesday at 6pm, which would have given me plenty of time to get ready and disembark for the show. By 4 pm it was not in the room, or 5pm, then 6pm came around and then 7pm. I called the front desk and they said "the paper says it will be ready after 6pm", IT CLEARLY SAYS BY 6PM! So I had to wear a freaking cover-up to a show that has a dress code!!! As they steward was dropping off alcohol that was brought aboard from Cuba we noticed that he was cleaning up something on the floor outside of our stateroom. HE BROKE OUR BOTTLE OF CUBAN RUM and had no remorse! We can only get this rum in Cuba. So there goes that money down the drain! If that wasn't enough, we were sitting outside on our deck on the final morning drinking mimosas, waiting for our group to be called to disembark. I was out on the deck with my mom and sister and he saw a crew member a couple of decks above us and said "good morning!" and he said it back to us. He obviously saw us and knew we were on the deck. Not a minute later, HE STARTED WASHING OFF/PRESSURE WASHING THE DECK AND BOAT ABOVE US AND WE WERE DRENCHED IN NASTY WATER!!!!!! SERIOUSLY! If the cruise wasn't bad enough. We then asked to see the supervisor of the steward. We got "She will be right up" about 5 times from our room steward. We then called the concierge desk and they told us she would be right up. 30 minutes later, after our group was already called to get off the boat, she finally arrived. After discussing everything that happened all she did was nod, she barely apologized, and we were sent on our way. I was looking forward to this cruise for 6 months since the day I booked it. What a waste of money!! Read Less

We planned this cruise for about a year and was so excited to see Cuba before it became "Americanized." This particular cruise was the only one that fell within our timeline for our group. The embarkment and disembarkment at Port Canaveral were fantastic. When we walked onto the ship, there was no one to greet us or direct us. We simply wondered the ship - checking it out. We joined the cruise director who was giving a tour of the ship. Our luggage arrived timely. Our room was small but clean. Good thing it had been cleaned before we arrived because our steward did not touch it again. The towels were left laying on the floor for days, and we eventually ran out. The food was left in our room. No tidying up at night time and no towel animals. The food on the ship was less than satisfactory. The few restaurants included in the reservation had only a few choices. It was the same food each day. The wait staff was so rude. They would literally take the plate out from us while eating. They cleaned our tables while we were still eating. The other restaurants on board were pricey. Alcohol was complimentary and a wide variety was available. The ship's customer service center lacks professionalism. They act like they are bothered if they have to answer a question. The bars and entertainment were good. The casino was just ok. The cruise director and staff were fun. Shows were professional. Entertainment was offered nightly, except for the overnight in Cuba. Half of the crew was given leave to go enjoy Cuba. That is great for them, but a lot of the ship was closed and service was slow because few staff members were left on board. Speaking of Cuba - don't go! It is just filthy. Bathroom facilities are non-existant. The "restaurants" are so dirty that we didn't eat or drink while ashore. We had to take our own toilet paper and drinking water from the ship. Make sure you attend the seminar on what to do and not to do while in Cuba. The locals were not friendly. There was no place to shop. It is stiffling hot and there is no breeze. The stinch from sewage in the streets is nasty. Some areas are great, but other areas are not. The women and children were begging for money and some were charging $5 to take pictures of them. We went on the cigar, rum and art excursion. It was interesting. We bought cigars, rum and coffee while on the tour because of price and quality. Our souvenirs were purchased from the ship giftshop because there was nothing to buy downtown. If you do decide to go, hold tightly onto your valuables while out and about in Cuba. Read Less

Strap in folks, this is going to be a long one but well worth your time if you're considering this cruise (or any cruise really). First, something you should know about me - I am the most optimistic person you will ever meet. My wife says I wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed every single day, no matter what. I can see the good in any situation whatsoever. However, by the end of my cruise experience, I was waxing poetic about the bowels of the hell that was this ship - so please keep that in mind. Also, for the record, this was my first cruise. My wife and I typically take 2-3 vacations a year (usually an all-inclusive in the Caribbean and another trip in another foreign country). Let's start with embarkation day. You arrive at the lackluster cruise port terminal (which is essentially a less glorified and less amenity-filled version of an airport) and promptly proceed to wait in line. Pay attention, because that will be a running theme throughout this trip. When you "check-in" online before you arrive, you select an arrival time. This time is a complete farce. You can show up whenever really because no one is checking anything with respect to your check in time. Waited in line about 30 - 45 minutes and finally were able to enter the ship. (Pro tip: Only bring carry-on luggage, especially if you plan on arriving late or leaving early on disembarkation day. If you leave your luggage with them at check-in, you don't get it until ~8 pm that night. Also, if you need to have them offload your luggage you need to leave it outside your room the night before you disembark and they pick it up). We arrived promptly for our 12:30 pm check in and get to our room by about 1:30 pm. My wife was tired and wanted to nap for a bit and I wanted to explore the ship. However, once you get on the ship, your room isn't ready AND not every part of the ship is open yet. They usher you into one of a few different large areas to "hang out" or, you can do like we and EVERYONE else did and head to the buffet to eat. (Pro tip: DO NOT go to the buffet at this time, it will be like wading through the worst sea of humanity you could possibly imagine for less than mediocre food.) After eating we finally had access to our room around 2 pm. Great, now vacation can begin... or so I thought. You are immediately bombarded with announcements that you MUST ATTEND the safety demonstration at 3 pm. My wife was trying to nap for a bit but this incessant noise from the tv and the loudspeakers made that nearly impossible. We arrive promptly at 3 pm to find huddled masses and even more massive confusion across the deck. You are assigned to a lettered station based on your room assignment and have to check in with some person in a magic vest that checks your name off a list and then get shoved into a huddled crowd. Now this is all outside in Florida in the summer time. It was crazy hot and humid with little to no air circulation whatsoever. They keep telling the group to move back and form tighter as more people show up! It is the epitome of cattle car-ing people. In fact, a woman (maybe late 40's/early 50's) ends up passing out from heat exhaustion and the (I kid you not) chef of the Italian restaurant who moonlights as an EMT (or has some sort of medical training) was brought out to assist her. Overall the safety demonstration is like 15 minutes long and utterly pointless. This whole process was extremely inefficient and utterly pointless. I find it hard to believe in 2018 that we can't figure out a better and more practical solution. Next, let's get to the real meat and potatoes of the cruise - the food. Going into the cruise, all I ever heard anyone ever talk about was the food was on their cruise. I'm not sure what cruise they were on but I felt completely bamboozled after my first complete day on the boat. The best thing I can say about the food is that it wasn't rotten and I didn't witness anything that would lead me to believe there were any food safety concerns. HOWEVER, there is a wide berth between that very, very low bar and the delicious food that I envisioned. The food was barely edible and overall lacked any flavor whatsoever. I searched high and low for any semblance of a dish that I would desire to eat again and I came up empty repeatedly. This was a "Freestyle Cruise" whereby you didn't need to make reservations anywhere and you can eat wherever/whenever but that doesn't mean much when the food isn't worth eating in the first place. I could go on for days about how bad the food was but there's A LOT more to get to. For the record, we only ate at the restaurants and buffets included in our package and did not eat at any of the specialty restaurants on board but from speaking to fellow cruisers, it did not seem that we missed much. There were a bunch of specialty restaurants on board but each and every one of them was an upcharge... which brings me to the biggest gripe with the cruise overall... Do you remember the episode of the cartoon Rocko's Modern Life where they go on a trip and see a billboard for a ski resort that looks amazing? The sign says "everything only $5*". Yes, that asterisk was important because, much like myself, after paying $5 to enter the ski resort, Rocko finds out that every single thing in the resort costs $5. Everywhere they turn, there is a constant $5 charge that ends up adding up to a huge sum by the end. THAT is the best to describe this cruise. Now this cruise is sold as an "all inclusive" and "freestyle" cruise where your package includes all the food, drinks, and everything else you can possibly want... with a HUGE freakin' asterisk. Everywhere you turned on the damn boat there was someone trying to sell you something or, even when you asked for something that was included in your package, someone was trying to sell you something else "for a small fee" that would be charged to your room. You want coffee that doesn't taste like they scraped it out of the Captain's porcelain throne this morning? $3. You want a wine that is actually drinkable? $5. You want to use the mobile app to allow you to message your friends for "free" throughout the cruise? $9 (back to WiFi and internet later in the review...). Water. Clean, drinkable water is the essence of life and NCL knows this. As a result, you cannot get a bottle of water anywhere on the ship without paying for it. Sure, they will give you as many cups of filtered water as you want but anything with a cap? $4. Also, from before you even get to the cruise port throughout the entire trip, they are constantly selling their "water packages", which consists of 6 bottles of water for $18! I can only imagine the amount of marriages that ended over ridiculous amount of charges racked up by an unsuspecting spouse over the course of a trip. Yes, you can charge your gambling credits to the room as well. Also, EVERYTHING you charge to the room has a 20% surcharge (example, my wife wanted one $5 glass of wine.... total charge $6). They also seek to penalize you at any moment. Did you lose your pool towel? $25. Do you need medical attention (yes, my wife wanted to see the doctor due to a mild allergic reaction)? $150 JUST TO BE SEEN BY A DOCTOR WHO IS A PART TIME CHEF. Whatever school that man went to was truly a heck of a bargain to come out as both a chef and a doctor. Internet is the biggest scam of all on this ship. They have different packages for WiFi but essentially it's either per minute (at the low-low rate of 99 cents/min.) or $120 for unlimited internet for 5 days. This ship has 11 levels roughly and it only worked reliably on the top 2 decks. For reference, we were on the 9th deck and it was spotty at best. Finally, there is the iConcierge app, which they don't tell you about whatsoever and we only learned about it from our rental car shuttle driver. This app is a piece of garbage and didn't work for 4 of the 5 days on the cruise. Purportedly you were supposed to be able to message your cruisemates "for free" - yea, right. $10. There is an "internet cafe" on board as well but it is NOT free and subject to the same rates as the WiFi. The shore excursions were good and definitely the highlight of the trip. However, for Key West, you arrive at roughly 1 pm and have to be back to the boat by 7 pm. Yes, it is a small island but that's barely enough time to do anything. Our group was pretty ambitious so we ate lunch (Conch Republic was delicious), headed to the beach for a dip, and then walked around town. We felt pretty rushed and didn't get a chance to experience any of the nightlife there. Oh well, onto Havana. Cuba was interesting to say the least. We did a 3 hour tour of the sights of Havana, which did a pretty good job of explaining the area and it's rich history. However, the tour guide really seemed to be reading directly from a script most of the time. (Pro tip: anytime they tell you to look in one direction, look the exact opposite direction and you will see something they definitely DON'T want you to see). It was really great to see an experience but is still not really tourist friendly yet. Give it time and it will soon be like every other island. We ate at two paladars, which were, by far, the best meals of the trip. I'm going to purposefully leave out their names because I don't want them ruined. Do a little bit a research and I assure you that it will be worth your time. Disembarking was fine, nothing spectacular to it and it was somewhat faster than getting on board. I could go on for a while about all the little annoyances and ridiculous things that happened but I think I made my point clear. Overall, I don't think I would do a cruise again, with this cruise line or any cruise line really. The whole thing was so lackluster and felt like a huge money suck. When I go on vacation, I don't want to have to follow a bunch of dumb rules and tried to be upsold everywhere I turn. I want to relax and do things on my time. I searched high and low on the ship and there was no quiet place I could just lay out and relax (except for my room). Every area with lounge chairs (mostly by the pool) had music blasting or live entertainment all damn day. I definitely didn't return relaxed or rested and already need a vacation from this last alleged "vacation". Read Less
