We chose this cruise because it was a newly renovated ship going on a 14 day cruise, I was very upset by some extremely negative reviews right before going on this cruise and i wish to put everyone else at ease, we have been on 3 other cruises and so far, 5 days in this one is the best so far. I realize that there was a few bugs they needed to work out the first few cruises out of the renovation but things are running very smoothly on this 4th cruise of this ship, i have not seen any construction or finishing that is still not complete, so far no sewer issues. The buffet is very crowded during peak times but we knew this in advance and just worked around it. We have been eating at other venues or during non peak times. Love the blue iguana cantina, guys burger joint and the pig and anchor bbq, the bbq we did on embarkation day, it was like no one even knew it was there!! No lines, i recommend the beef, super tender!! Everything is so new and beautiful, everyone has been super helpful. Our room steward gave us a box fan for my hubby, it's been a life saver!! My advice is to ask for something, you never know if they might have it. Love the ropes course and water slides, never any lines, loving the comedy and entertainment, cruise director Chris is a blast. My daughter has trouble making friends but the youth crew has made things super fun and she had friends by the second day. I can't say enough about the great time we are having on this beautiful ship. It makes me sad that people only leave reviews when they want to complain, life is too short to be negative!! Read Less

My husband and I sailed on Sunrise from NYC to Bermuda. This was our second cruise, with the first being about 15 years ago, also on Carnival. Overall, we had a wonderful vacation, but that was most certainly in spite of Carnival and not because of them. The Good: Our room (7593) was beautiful. It was a balcony room on the 7th deck, had a very comfortable bed and sitting area, and an updated bathroom. We had no issues or complaints whatsoever with our room. Guy's Burger Joint was SO flipping good. Eat here for all of your meals (no really, see below). The brick oven pizza and ice cream 24/7 were also quite good and the pastry chef is top notch--don't skip dessert! The embarkation process was ridiculously easy, straightforward and well done. We got our bags delivered within about an hour, and had immediate access to our room (we arrived on time for our 12:30pm embarkation time). The Serenity deck was lovely. Very comfortable and quiet area; you truly felt like you were away from it all. The downside was that we had rough seas and high winds for both of our days at sea, so we had a really small window to enjoy it. This is obviously not Carnival's fault, but was still a bummer. The fitness area is also great; I got in a good workout on the ship and appreciated having access to the equipment. The Bad: The crew had inconsistent and contradictory communication throughout our time there. Paperwork says---be at your muster station by 3pm. Cruise director announces--don't go to your muster station until I tell you to (which is well after 3pm). The morning of debarkation, the cruise director announces that we should stay in our rooms until our deck is called. We do so, and housekeeping knocks on our door; each time we say we're here waiting for our deck to be called, they apologize and say they'll let someone know. After the third time, I ask the person why they keep knocking if we're supposed to wait in our rooms until our deck is called. They say that we need to be out of our rooms by 8:30am (it's 8:28am and they've been knocking since 8am). I ask how would we have known that? He says it was on our paperwork from last night, and I say we never received it. At that point, we decide that we're not waiting anymore and we get up and leave/make our way off the boat. We're on our cruise to celebrate our anniversary, and our steward (Slam) leaves us a $50 spa gift card. It expires the next day, so we call the Spa immediately to see if they can fit my husband in for a massage. They do so, and when he goes to settle up, he provides them with the gift card. They tell him that they can't accept it, that it's only good for certain treatments and that they have already discounted his service. We contact the Spa Manager, and after a bit of back and forth they take off the amount of the gift card. We booked a shore excursion and when we got to Bermuda we headed out for a leisurely morning until the time of our excursion (12pm). We decided to stop back at our room and it's a good thing we did; the Carnival staff slipped a piece of paper under our door after we left that morning to let us know that our excursion had been cancelled due to weather. The weather was lovely that day, so there's really no way we would have known unless we stopped by our room. Again, really poor communication. The food on the boat is gross. We tried the Deli, the main dining room, the Italian place and the buffet. The buffet is basically the same food as the main dining room, and it was really bland and of poor quality. Also, there are dirty cups and plates all over, and I wish that Carnival had a space where you could drop that stuff off versus everyone just leaving stuff on the table--gross. The service from dining room staff and the steward was basically nonexistent. No one was very friendly or helpful, and that was a shame. One night, my husband burned his hand on pizza that fell back due to a boat movement. Trying to get an ice pack for it became a comedy of errors. We went to the Medical Center our deck 0, and were sent away with plastic bags and told to go to the bar to get ice. Thankfully, another Carnival staff member saw us looking frustrated and took us up to the bar and got the ice for us. That was wonderful and much appreciated, but it shouldn't have been so difficult to get a little help. One night at dinner, several other people on the boat shared that they were experiencing sewage back ups in their rooms. Thankfully, we had none of that, but that's just nasty and not acceptable. Additionally, my husband wasn't aware of the history of the Surnise (as the Triumph), and when we got on the boat he said to me that he kept smelling an odd odor, like poop. Sure enough, even with a $200 million face lift, you can't fix some things. We loved Bermuda, and were able to find a great snorkeling spot on our own via public transport (i.e. skip the waste of money on an excursion!). We loved our room. We loved the time at sea. But, we were constantly frustrated and disappointed by the Carnival team and would not return to that cruise line. Read Less

Arrived at the port around 11 and only weddings and media were being checked in. So we waited maybe 15 minutes and then we were able to get to the check-in scanner-holding people who scanned your passport and check marked your boarding pass. On through Security and then a short wait in the lounge with the other platinum guests; boarding started around 11:45. Went to our 9C aft wrap cabin to drop off our carry-ons. Cabin decor is nice with blue and beige. Closet space could be larger, or have drawers somewhere. There just one shelf high above where hangers go in both closets. Nightstand has a little storage; prior occupant left some lotion in the cabinet. Bathroom decor updated but not the toilet as it had a black ring in it that would not come off. Shampoo and body wash were good. Mattress was very comfy. Empty fridge which promptly received our bottle of wine we brought onboard. The balcony itself has not been re-done. The flooring had holes in it and whoever mopped it got wads of mop rope in it. Also the black rubber rings around the windows were in bad shape and missing on the inside in some places. This is where Carnival lacks attention to detail. And the tvs are blaring when you enter the cabin. This is an issue with their tvs---every time you turn it on the volume is blasting. Also, I noticed there was only one lounger on our huge balcony and asked the cabin steward to get another. He had some excuse like "this is how they're doing it now" however, once I was able to reach Guest Services on the phone, (on hold way too long hearing how important my call is) that person called the floor manager and shortly after that, another lounge chair showed up. So to those who get our cabin next: you're welcome! Headed to Guy's Pig and Anchor and enjoyed an outdoor lunch there. Wandered forward to Serenity area which was very nice. Huge hot tub; its own bar area. We liked this area a lot (and it helped that we were the only ones there at that time) but since our balcony had loungers, we spent most of our lounging time there. We came across brand ambassador John Heald while in NYC port and reminisced about our 2 day Carnival Dream cruise years ago--in a nor'easter. It was an adventure on a brand new ship. He was there for the ship-naming ceremony and was soon off to catch Legend in Alaska. It's odd on this class of ship to see cabins on deck 5 aft where the piano bar, comedy club and one other club used to be. The Comedy club is now in Limelight lounge which worked out just fine although people had difficulty finding the mid-ship entrance to Limelight. The night club that used to be across from Alchemy is gone and the piano bar is now there along with Red Frog which was host to many events. Nice, open space. Didn't like walking through the casino to get mid-ship. The shops are the shops, and the Java Coffee bar that also used to be on deck 5 is now in the atrium area of deck 4. Had very interesting and delicious-looking donuts and muffins there. Game room (with board games) is gone and a few games are in the corner of the coffee bar. There is also a coffee bar in the buffet and we got cappuccinos there. The ropes course looked cool. There is a pool table up there too that we tried to use on a sea day. Can't do it when there is any ship movement. There is outdoor exercise equipment there, as well as the basketball court, and up one deck is mini golf. Water slides looked fun but we didn't get to them this cruise. Spa pass in a non-spa cabin was $69+ for the 4 days. Gave you access to the saunas, steam rooms, infrared room and heated loungers.  Liked the outdoor movie screen and we caught the end of the newer Mamma Mia movie. 2 movies showed every evening. Muster still takes too long. Carnival must be the only line that still makes you line up outside vs. sitting in a theater or restaurant. We had YourTime dining option, and the one night we went for dinner in the dining room we went to the check-in desk on deck 5, waited in a very short line, got our table assignment and took the paper to the aft dining room and we were seated right away. Worked out nicely, and has pretty much every time we've done this since Carnival introduced the option a few years ago. Forgot we could have used the HUB app to secure our table. Got a reservation at Fahrenheit 555 on board. Food and service was very good. It's a smaller restaurant since it is part of what used to be the upper area of the mid-ship dining room. Tried a few times but we were not able to get a reservation at the Italian restaurant. We were waitlisted and they did call us the last night for an 8:30 reservation which we declined. Also tried out Bonsai, and the appetizer and roll we had were both very good. Guy's burgers are consistently good. I did miss the Mongolian Grill as that was my favorite restaurant on Carnival ships. Buffet is a madhouse at breakfast time so we went to Blue Iguana where hardly anyone else was. Check the Fun Times to see where omelet stations are--there are several at various locations, as well as other breakfast options. Sea Day brunch was very nice and there is a new menu. I missed chicken diavolo and the froot loop crusted french toast, yet there were other good things to have. Pastas, burgers, breakfast items, etc. Everything we had was good at the brunch and I used my platinum drink coupon here for a mojito. I took a pic of the menu but I have to try to remember how to post it! Chocolate Extravaganza is now just a few cakes and a fondue station. The dark chocolate cake was very good. The new map channel is useless. Bring back the old one! I still do like the bridge cam to see what's ahead of us since our view was side and behind the ship. I liked CD Chris from Scotland and his never-ending selection of kilts. I loved when his announcement ended with something like "whatever you do, put FUN in it." Thought that was great. Welcome Aboard show in the Liquid Lounge. I expected to see previews of cruise entertainment, but it was Chris the CD talking to the audience and having a contest which would determine VIPs for the cruise. Just took longer than I expected. Then there was a 10 minute performance of the singers/dancers which was just ok. We didn't go to any of the shows except both comedians. The guy was very funny. Musicians around the ship were quite good. We have OBC from our TA and Carnival gives me a hard time when I want to split it among the people in our cabin. Why can't they just split it between the people sharing the cabin like other lines do. Becomes a pain to have to figure out who gets what or what to pay for on my account to cover their OBC. Also, on the tv (and Carnival Hub app) your account seems to get higher and higher $ but they don't show the OBC being deducted. You have to go to Guest Services to get that (or a kiosk to print out your statement). All things I wish worked simpler on Carnival. Platinum gift was the lanyard with the cheapest, junkiest plastic to hold your cruise card. Nothing else onboard to trade it for I was told. Believe me, I asked. First sea day was quite rough but not our first rough seas to Bermuda. During the cruise we had wind, rain, sun, more rain, more sun. Quite a variety. We arrived in Bermuda just after the beautiful Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas. It was windy in Bermuda, so we got to Horseshoe via the $7 shuttle, and no umbrellas were being rented due to wind. We did see one go flying, so we understood. Nothing here is cheap--the 2 lounge chairs we got were $44. It really is a beautiful beach and it does, in the right light, look pink. In summary, I was overdue for a cruise and it hit the spot. I love being at sea on the balcony; it's my bliss. However, I do wish Carnival had done a real overhaul everywhere bow to stern since there was rust all over the stern, the window rubber I mentioned already, etc. There was also a foul smell mid-ship on the lower decks near the lobby occasionally. I was glad we were staying at the stern. A short cruise is better than no cruise! Read Less

I chose Carnival Sunrise because it left from Norfolk and was an easy departure point as I was taking my entire family on the cruise. It was the first cruise for many of them; so their first cruise experience. I have sailed Carnival before and have enjoyed the experience. I can not say the same for this trip. I had high expectations since I had heard so much hype about the renovations and upgrades. I was disappointed and wondered where the money was spent. There was a lot of rust in places, loose carpet, and general maintenance issues. There were long lines in the Lido marketplace at all the meals. The flow wasn’t very good. The Lido deck did have the water slide which my kids enjoyed. There was also putt-putt golf, basketball, fossball, and a pool table. My family enjoyed the pool and the rope course. My kids did enjoy their trip and the travel and the visits to Nassau and Freeport. I was disappointed in the quality of the food (very bland). The chefs seemed to want to be innovative, trying to mix flavors and textures. But the food didn’t have a lot of flavor. I heard that Guy’s BBQ was good, but I didn’t enjoy it. The Guy’s Burger Joint was awesome as usual. And ice cream was always available. The wait staff at our table in the dining room was good, not great. They seemed new and not quite sure of their role. Our waiter, Idewa, was very pleasant and good with the kids. There was no anticipation of guest needs or desires as I have experienced in the past. Service was also slow. And the “shows” in the dining room were not on par with what I have enjoyed on past cruises. I was also disappointed with the dining experience as this was a family trip. My two sisters and I had booked the cruise together and requested family to be seated together for the early dining. Unfortunately, my sister and her daughter and granddaughter were placed on the lower level and the rest were on the upper level. When she bought this to the attention of the maître d’, she was treated rudely and told that it was too late to make a change. The entertainment, family-wise, was not family friendly. I did not attend many of the shows because they weren’t age appropriate for my younger grandchildren. And the movies were PG-13. On my previous Carnival cruise 2 years ago, I spent every evening on the Lido deck watching family friendly movies. I never watched one movie on the Lido deck on this cruise. There was very little TV programming for children either while we were in the cabin; just Cartoon Network and Blue’s Clues. Room-wise, I had a spa balcony. I was originally on Deck 2 with my family, but after two room changes by Carnival, ended up on Deck 11. Not a hardship by any means. But I had requested adjoining rooms because I was helping my daughter and son-in-law with their children. I was told there was no adjoining rooms on Deck 2. Lo and behold, my two sisters arrived to find they had adjoining rooms where I was originally supposed to be on Deck 2. They had not requested adjoining rooms. There were highs and lows. Pictures were not great. Photographers were more interested in quick shots without much imagination, and not much quality. I bought a couple of my family that were ok, but discarded a lot because they weren’t very good. And as one previous reviewer commented, you were nickleled-and-dimed a lot. Disembarkation: what a cluster. It took us two hours to get off the ship. Decks were called in order, and since we were on Deck 11, we were called last. It was very difficult to get an elevator. We made it to Deck 5 and sat on the floor with our luggage for an hour. We had to be out of our cabins by 8:30, and not a lot of available public space to sit with the kids. Once our deck was called, we finally made it on an elevator to Deck 3, then were unable to get off as the area was jam packed with other guests. I can say things did go quickly once we were around the corner and in the hallway. I think feeder lines on Deck 3 and more assistance from staff for crowd control would have made this easier. Overall, I give this cruise and ship a 3 out of 5. Read Less

I have been on 10 cruises so far, mostly Celebrity and Royal Carribean. This was my first and LAST Carnival Cruise. We decided to take a quick last minute 7 night Western Carribean cruise out of Port Canaveral in a SPA balcony cabin. WHAT A MISTAKE. The food was horrible, the cabin steward only offered once a day service, we had to beg for extra towels, their dine anytime, required us to get into a line every time before the meal and get a table assigned to us and then proceed to another floor where the restaurant was located and give the table # to the staff. Really??? We ended up eating in the buffet area as the food in the dining room was bland, extremely small portions, and long wait times between courses. The buffet area dining tables were always dirty, the window shelf areas along side the tables were disgusting. Most of the time the sanitation stations had no product in them. Low and Behold, the last day I wake up with a horrible sore throat and miserable cold. NEVER AGAIN WILL I CRUISE CARNIVAL. PS. If you like tons of drunken sloppy 20-30 year olds, this would be your dream cruise. Read Less

Embarkation was horrible. See previous reviews. Took us 2 1/2 hours . Cabin: Spa Balcony Who in the heck was our steward? No one spoke to us for 7 days. The room was serviced in the morning. No robes - had to ask someone in the hall who said she was too busy to get them. The next day some old sort of damp robes were delivered. There was no soap, or shampoo in the cabin. Glad I brought some. Your time dining: We requested a table for 2 on 3 nights. Only got it one night. We never returned. Serenity was heinous. There was no where to cool off. The bar was off in a cubby, the entrance to the water slides was there, guess I could have gone down those. This was the worst ship in 20 years of cruising. We did enjoy the violin group Black Diamonds and the rock band with the Have Mercy Horns. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was very inexpensive and we did not have to fly to Norfolk. We did upgrade to a Cloud 9 Spa cabin for a fee. If this was my first cruise I would never return. Because I know it can be fun and a great time, I was terribly disappointed in the experience and would never return to this ship. While waiting for my ride from terminal I wanted to tell those new arrivals to run and not get on the ship. I am questioning Carnival overall. They needed another week to complete the finishes. Embarkation • Arrived at our appointed time 3:00pm and the line was wrapped all around the outside of the terminal at least 2 hours deep and moving slowly. Thankfully it was not raining. It appeared as if no one told Carnival that their ship was leaving at 6:00pm that day. We set sail at 8:00pm. Stateroom • Paid for a Cloud 9 spa cabin 1102. This upcharge included access to the thermal suite in the Spa. It was also supposed to provide “spa” toiletries in your cabin, spa robe and slippers. After 2 days and no toiletries we asked what we were supposed to have. The Spa manager said Elemis products however, they were not on board. We saw a lady in the spa wearing a brand new spa robe and slippers. After asking for spa robes and slippers we received old robes left over that had obviously been washed and not dried several times. • No ice bucket. When we asked for ice we received an uncovered plastic tub for which they sell multiple beers full of ice in our cabin. No tongs no cover, just a tub of ice. Bless her heart she brought it every day. Spa • If you do not have a spa cabin you can pay $129 for unlimited access to the thermal suite. • The steam sauna when working was dark and water pooled on the floor with sediment. The dry sauna and infrared salt room had construction dust everywhere and there were obvious splinters on the newly constructed seating. All three were in various states of repair during the cruise. • The warm thermal recliners were awesome. However, they are positioned directly under overhead lights which are too bright and the music is too loud coupled with the hammering of sauna repairs was anything but relaxing. In that same area is an aromatherapy color Chroma shower. Did not use. However, they will make a custom scrub for you to use in that shower. Fitness Center • New equipment. Nice assortment. • A large pile of construction debris left next to the rowers. Dust everywhere all over the floor, mats everywhere. Tape on all of the mirrors as if they just put them up that day. No one came during the entire trip to remove tape for construct junk or to even wipe down the floors. Dining • Guys Pig and Anchor was not open for business. • The main dining rooms had been nicely refurbished. Brighter not hazy. However, that new carpet was shedding like a large hairy dog. Big tufts of carpet fiber were rolling like tumbleweed in the dining room and in the common areas. • Lido was bright and large. Congested and very very long lines for no apparent reason. • Food quality was decent nothing new or different. However, desserts where better, fewer offerings but more of an American flavor pallet. • Seafood shack was greasy and under cooked. It could be a winner if they tried harder. Was not busy. • The Italian restaurant had tasty lunch portions of pasta for free. However, there was dust on all of the chairs as if they just pulled them out of storage that day. • There is an Asian place in addition to sushi. They offer 3 choices during lunch of various ramen, soupy rice things in bowl. They will not survive. • Sea Day Afternoon Tea – the only free tea on board is plain Lipton regular or Decaf and Bigalow Green tea. All other tea is $2.95 for an unrecognizable brand. Tea cakes, scones, sandwiches etc. were acceptable and plentiful. • Sea Day Brunch was okay. Ship overall condition • Lots of unfinished areas. New carpet on stairs 8 out of 10 stairs finished with that strip but they did not come back and do the last 2 stairs. Common all over the ship. No one did that deck by deck walk through for finishes and delivery. • I’ve mentioned several times the dust and construction debris. • Contractors and engineers all over the ship having sailed from Spain. They were very hard working men. You could see they were working very hard fixing things. • At 10 am on several days the toilets in staterooms stopped working with no warning. • On several days without warning no cold water in shower. Yes no COLD water. That explains the notice posted in shower warning about scalding water. • ATMs out of money on day 2. • Could not use sail pass card in casino on a few days. • The expensive WI/FI was not working for anyone. Was non-existent or spotty at best. No refunds. • No map view in any common area or on the dedicated channel in your cabin. No ocean view camera. Was is not plugged in? • Captain did not make ONE announcement. No welcome aboard. No daily greeting, ships position, destination, rate of speed. NOTHING. No bye get off my ship. Shops • Decent normal selection of merchandise. • Very very small section for alcohol. • I got sick on day 2 with cough and sore throat one day I purchased a bag of cough drops for $3.99 and noted the quantity and variety cold meds. The next day I purchased a $17.99 tiny bottle of Dayquil one of the last 2 bottles on the shelf. Obviously other people were sick too. Entertainment • Sigh…they did their best with the 7 people in the “fun squad”. The cruise director “Flying Scotsman” has too many jobs. He even headlined his own show in the Limelight lounge. The also did the daily activity announcements. The entertainment on this ship was not as good as on other ships. Many attempts at Motown references, Harlem Renaissance, Michael Jackson nods, but NO BLACK PEOPLE in the Fun Squad or in the entertainment group singing or dancing. How could that be? Disembarkation • Again we have this Cruise director trying to prevent people who are carrying their own luggage from getting off the ship. Normally all self-debarkation starts when ship is cleared and anyone wanting to carry off can go. NOPE, he attempted unsuccessfully to make people wait for their deck to be called for self-debarkation starting in the bottom of the ship. So after waiting 2 hrs for deck 11 to be called we took the elevator to 3 to get in the mix. We could not even get out of the elevator for 20 min. It took an hour to turn the corner and get off the ship. RIDICULOUS. Read Less

Norfolk is near where we now live. We used to cruise out of Baltimore on the Carnival Pride once a year (sometimes more). Since we had NEVER had a bad cruise on the Pride, we were eager to see what the refurbished Sunrise had to offer. We were extremely disappointed, so much so that we are rethinking whether to ever cruise with Carnival again. Embarkation was a cruel joke. It was if Carnival was doing this for the very first time and didn't have a clue how to get passengers into long-term parking or onto the ship. Our cabin (Riviera deck) had a terrible vibration that kept us awake for much of the first night. After we complained the next morning, engineering discovered a large fan directly below our cabin that was about to fail (my guess, possibly catastrophically, given how bad the room-shaking rumble was). In the past, food in the main dining room had been a consistent bright spot. In our opinion, Carnival food on our previous cruises had been on par with some pricier lines such as Celebrity, Holland America, or Princess (but below Viking Ocean and River). Not this time; not even in the premium steakhouse. Ingredients seemed sub-standard and food preparation was also lacking. The library had been removed and there was very little public space where you could go to read or have a conversation. In an obvious effort to extract maximum revenue from passengers, there was also lots of annoying nickel-and-diming throughout the week. Debarkation was a relative joy as we carried our luggage off the ship, passed painlessly through customs, and were finally able to put Carnival Sunrise in our rear-view mirror. Read Less

Picked the cruise due to origination from Norfolk. Also read that this ship had been just been refitted and the price was reasonable. Embarkation was a problem with long lines and open to weather. Fortunately it did not rain as many would have been soaked. once on board things went pretty smooth. Buffet was extremely busy and not enough space and food was warm but not hot. First night dinner was average with dinner warm and a strong smell of sewage just outside the restaurant entrance. Many of the public restrooms were closed and many rooms on the 6th deck had toilet problems. Customer service said this was first trip after refit and problems are expected. The toilet problems went on for two days. The movie channel worked sporadically and the internet system was a joke. The last day of the trip was the first day that we had a "hot" not lukewarm breakfast. Most of the crew members were good as they did not cause the ship problems and they did the best they could. The entertainment was poor with the exception of the Cruise Director "Chris" who was the best we have seen on any cruise. This was our first and last Carnival cruise. Too many issues. The best decision we made was to pick a 7 day cruise as opposed to a 14 day cruise. Read Less

First run fresh from the yards, Norfolk was easy on, just don't get there before your boarding time because you will wait. We had the aft balcony stateroom, nice large balcony. The ship looks great for a 20 yr old vessel. Food was better than we expected, steak house knocked it out of the park. Seafood shack was very good as was the Bbq and of course the burgers, deli and pizza also good.Service was a little confused in the dining room the first few nights but did come together, We do not eat sushi on cruise ships so we passed on this and we did enjoy thr italian restaurant. All in all the ship did seem a little crowded at times, 3008 on our 7 day run to Grand Turk, Half Moon and Freeport, we have visited these ports before and feel you only need to see these ports once so we stayed aboard and we enjoyed the ship on these days.
