Six months since our last holiday, by May 2019 it was time for a break. I am a firm believer in the HR notion that a break every six months is restorative (if not to ones bank account, at least for the soul). So I looked for a cruise that would please me and my wife. A bit about us: we are late middle-aged (later 50's, early 60's), one of us still works, and we have done many cruises since 2001. Mostly on Holland America, yet more recently on Seabourn. We very much liked the almost all-inclusive nature of our Seabourn cruises, as well as the smaller ships. In May 2019 Seabourn had an interesting cruise option, yet on that ship the verandah cabin guarantee offered may well have come with the opaque (metal) balcony railings. That is a show-stopper for my wife, who wants to be able to see out her balcony while seated. Seabourn would put us in a balcony with the Plexiglas railing--yet only if we ponied up another $2 grand each. It looked like we would not be cruising after all in May. Happily, searching the usual websites, I found this interesting Regent cruise--a trans-Atlantic, which we like (the days at sea can be quite restful), some interesting ports, a departure from New York, which is only an hours flight from Toronto, and with the airfare and shore excursions included. We also would have a proper balcony in the verandah cabin, with no metal railing blocking the view. All this, including business class air for the transatlantic flight home, for about the same price as Seabourn wanted for the obstructed view balcony. Hmmm, it was time to give Regent a try. Cutting to the chase for any impatient readers, we quite enjoyed our Regent cruise and would return to them. This line is now on our list, along with Seabourn. We would also return to HAL, even though we do like not having to sign for most things, for the right itinerary and pricing. It is nice to have options and choices. We found Regent a well organized operator. Their shore staff met us at Newark airport, and we were escorted to the van (we were the only passengers) provided to take us to the port of Manhattan. Ironically, the drive from the airport took longer than our 1.3 hour flight. It was nice, accordingly, that I did not have to pay for a taxi or limo, and that such ground transportation was included. As we checked in around 2PM, we had missed the rush. On board quickly, we headed to the Verandah for a casual lunch. This was the first of many very good meals on board. Ultimately to our cabin--we had received and accepted an upsell offer for a penthouse. The basic amenity was that the cabin, same size as the verandah cabin but better located, came with a butler, who was excellent! Between the butler and our stewardess, and her assistant, we were very well looked after for the next 15 days. Having never had a butler before, and wondering what we would use him for, now I wonder how we could survive without one! The cabin was a little tight compared with what we are used to. On HAL we get a Neptune Suite, and on Seabourn a regular verandah. Yet the Seabourn ships are newer than this particular ship, Navigator, which is about 20 years old. We found that there was not quite as much drawer space or storage generally, as we have had on Seabourn in the regular verandah cabins--yet we managed to get everything put away. Still, I would not have wanted a room service dinner in the cabin. Again, other than having the daily snacks which the butler brought, it was a tad tight for dining. We were not impressed with the lifeboat drill. Held partly inside, and then being taken out to the boat deck was superfluous, as the boats you were shown at the drill may well not be the boat to which you would be assigned when you gather in the event of an emergency. In my view this is not well thought out. Either do the entire drill outside, or inside. I would also think specific lifeboats should be assigned per cabin, so everyone knows exactly where to go in case of an emergency. Other lines do this in a more organized fashion. We had a little difficulty in getting the cabin stocked with my wife's favourite Vodka, Chopin, a potato-based vodka. A substitute was provided, and Chopin was available in the bars. Ultimately, our butler scrounged us a bottle for the cabin. Unfortunately, we were told that Chopin was no longer to be provided on Regent once current inventory was finished. Too bad, as it is an excellent luxury brand. The included/available Scotches were also not quite top drawer. I mean, seriously, Johnny Walker Red? Yes, they had Black, Chivas Regal (my daily tipple), and some single malts. Yet for a luxury cruise line, at a minimum 12 year old single malts (not just one, but a choice of several) should be included, and frankly, they should provide 15 year old Scotch without a surcharge. In addition to most friendly, warm, welcoming, and personable cabin staff, the same could be said about all the bar staff. They were great. It was nice to be seated, and ones regular drink brought around without having to say a word. Kudos to them for fostering a welcoming and clubby atmosphere. The food quality was truly excellent--and we are foodies. It was the best we have experienced on any cruise. Being fair, HAL provides in our experience very good Banquet style meals. Seabourn provides very good meals as well, just not a lot of variety at times, and at times, overly salted. Regent's food was not overly salted, yet was well seasoned. There was also plenty of variety at lunch, and especially at dinner in the main restaurant. Some of the "always available" dinner items included genuine whole Dover Sole, which would be filleted table-side--a pleasure to watch. We found the food prepared "a la minute", and was an example of fine dining. Not every dish was a success, but the effort was clearly present. We were surprised that someone on the cruise after ours, a Veterans charter, did not enjoy the food. Yet that may have been because it was a charter. We enjoyed the dining room or the upstairs casual restaurant which becomes an Italian restaurant at night. Happily, it was not a buffet, unless one wanted to go up and select items. We much preferred the lovely Italian servers bringing us our meal. We also enjoyed two meals in the steakhouse. We found the personnel there most welcoming and accommodating, too. The beef was very good. Yet, as I have a great local butcher, and enjoy making a BBQ during decent weather, unlike some I do not get all excited about a steakhouse! Service in the dining room, however, was not quite as good as was the food. Some of the servers were great: warm, friendly, yet also competent. Over 15 days there can be one or two food items that are not to ones taste--the better wait staff knew to check and to quickly rectify the situation. Alas, not all of the servers fit into that category. We are used to on HAL our fixed table at 8PM, where we build a rapport with the same team of waiter, assistant waiter, and wine waiter over the cruise. While we do appreciate the flexibility of open seating available on smaller ships, one sacrifices, to some extent, that personal rapport which can, if one is lucky (and we have always had good luck on HAL in that regard), develop between server and customer. The challenge for Regent and Seabourn is to imbue their wait staff with the feeling that, even if for one night, each passenger is "their" passenger, and the goal should be to make the evening special, for each guest. Not easy to accomplish, but worth aiming for. In any case on this cruise we had a word with hotel management about some initial service issues, and happily, things improved. The ports included Bermuda, and the shore excursions, also included, were very good. Unfortunately, a couple of the afternoon tours were cancelled. As I get up early most weekday mornings, the last thing I want to do on any cruise is get up early to go on tour. I prefer a leisurely morning. In most European ports, Regent did offer afternoon tours, and again, we enjoyed them. We found the laundry to be expensive, albeit thankfully we were using "Monopoly money" (our ship-board credits) for that. Seabourn offers laundry at $50 for as much as one can stuff into a bag. Regent should follow that example. If I did not have sufficient credits, the cost of laundry would be a factor worth considering, along with the other factors such as included shore excursions, included air-fare, etc. There are, it seems, always trade-offs to be made. The lectures were in our view poorly timed. The fellow who spoke at 10 AM I would have preferred hearing in the afternoon, and I could have skipped the afternoon guy who talked about photography. The onboard shows were decent, although the layout of the theatre makes it hard to find an unobstructed view unless you arrive early. Some of the specialty performers were excellent! The piano bar was ok. While the piano player could play, he often mangled the lyrics. A little more practice to make perfect may help. Bar staff there, however, were great. The demographics of this cruise included, in our view, a somewhat older crowd. That made us feel comparatively younger (not a bad thing!). Still, we met a few folk to, on occasion, have a drink with. People were quite pleasant for the most part. We were surprised that the dress code on Regent was specified as "elegant-casual" each night. Apparently for cruises of 15 days or less, there are no formal-optional nights. I had brought a couple of ties, yet never wore one. In the main dining room, however, most men did wear a sports-jacket or the ubiquitous navy blazer. People were for the most part indeed elegantly casual. We flew home on May 30, and have to say that Amsterdam's airport is very disorganized. I would also warn folks not to connect through London-Heathrow, as the security and other line ups are horrendous. In hindsight, I would have tried for a non-stop flight which, as we all know, is the best bet. Generally, and if the price is right, we would definitely return to Regent. Yet right now they seem to be charging nearly $1,000.00 per person per day. That is far more than what we paid for this cruise. So, if one can afford it, go for it--yet it pays to shop around. We had booked a suite high and forward to limit the effects of the vibrations, i was surprised, not bad at all. The ship is smaller so it took me a while to get adjusted to the ceiling height and general smallness of the ship, it needs refreshing and i heard it was due in the near future. The smaller ship gives you a more intimacy feeling. The stewardess were as usual amazing , always smiling and they have the worst job, cleaning up after us. There was a small decrease in quality of the service especially on the veranda. Maybe a very small decrease in the number of staffs The food was very good with a few hiccups, soufflé's are basically warm cake, good but not a soufflé , the pastry/croissant were not as flaky as in the other ships, the french baguette was amazing, the selection of cheeses was very limited, every day i saw the blue cheese, there is thousand of cheeses in the world , could have been better, the food was very good in general The excursions were fine, the buses 70% of them were uncomfortable if you were unlucky on being the last ones on the small bus, you were stuck over the wheel with your knees in your face. The organization for the excursions , checking in was bad, especially when the others ships have a different system, you come in, checkin, they give you a number then you sit until your number is called, here everybody would line up until they called your excursion number, and you do not want to be the last ones on the bus, so most people are standing to get their buses tickets Tenders , especially the first one was horrid , they picked up on it and got better. We missed the meeting of the waters, the negro river and amazon because the ship was late leaving the port by one hour, got too dark, i blame the captain, he should have been more organized or in the morning announce the event by speaker. Overall, a good trip, what made the difference was the speaker Terry Green, she made this cruise, she was terrific , and reading the river of doubt , which narrates the expedition of Teddy Roosevelt down the amazon was also very helpful. The cruise director Andy is terrific as are all of the crew, always smiling and greeting you. Read Less

My husband and I were celebrating our 30th anniversary and wanted to have a special event. We had never sailed on a luxury cruise before, and Regent seemed to be the all around best. Mostly it was, but there were some issues. STAFF: Wonderful! Did not meet a single person who was not helpful, friendly and personable. They were all an amazing group. CABIN: Were pleased with the cabin and especially the walk-in closet. Could not get the tub to work. The shower temperature was either cold, lukewarm or super hot. The thermostat for our cabin did not work; the temperature was arctic and I was in sweaters and using the extra blankets. After a week and a half it was fixed. I was surprised by how small the veranda was. The bed was very comfortable. One evening the power to the bathroom and walk-in closet went out. It wasn't fixed until mid morning the next day. EXCURSIONS: Couldn't ask for more choices. The excursion staff ran things very smoothly. MAINTENANCE: The ship had several problems, in addition to the items mentioned above. Our corridor had a water leak. One of the main lounges had a persistent water leak and could not be totally used. FOOD: Overall, our favorite restaurant was the main dining room, Compass Rose. They had a nice standard menu and an interesting special menu each evening. I was very disappointed in the "premiere" restaurant, Prime 7. I was really looking forward to the king crab legs. They were in a huge pile and mostly not legs. Bland. On another evening I ordered prime rib and it was too tough to cut. The afternoon tea event was awesome - really spectacular offerings. The ship barbecue was good. I loved the small ship size which led to making some nice friends. But given some of the problems we experienced, I did feel disappointed that the whole trip wasn't top notch. Read Less

We chose this cruise to visit ports that we had not been to and to see the fall colors. Because we live in Florida, we had forgotten how cold and rainy it gets this time of year. Of course the cruise company does NOT have control of those elements. This is our first cruise since I joined cruise Critics. I did not know how to contact the other members for the meet and mingle events, therefore we did not participate. We have another Regent cruise beginningin January and hope to understand the process better. The service and food were both excellent. Compass Rose has such a diverse menu with excellent selections. The talent that I watched, the Regent Production team put on excellent shows. We played trivia most days and had fun meeting other guests and trying to come up with the correct answers. We really liked the size of the ship and the easy of getting around. Our butler and room steward were both 5 star. We believe the excursions that Regent includes are every bit as good or many times better that we pay extra for on other cruise lines. We had a great trip. Read Less

We had wanted to try a Regent cruise for a long time and had actually booked one in 2011 but I ended up in the hospital and we had to cancel. So when we decided on a British Islands trip we decided that this was the one to fulfill that long postponed desire. We went with the concierge suite for the extra hotel day in Reykjavik which we did enjoy ( although the excursion we went on was longer than I had anticipated and we ended being up for about 40 hours before hitting the sack that night). The suite was spacious, our steward was very attentive but the bed was higher in the middle than at the edges so sleeping was an adventure every night. For a luxury cruise line the tv entertainment was the most limited that we had on any of our cruises (this was our ninth) and soon got boring. We were used to larger ships so this was something new to us - a ship that had almost as many crew members as passengers. The service was great from the bar staff to the dining room staff to our room steward. We soon got to know the names of many of them and they remembered us as well. The food was very tasty but aside from the everyday choices the daily specials were limited - more so than on some other cruise lines. I was particularly disappointed in the lobster. Good lobster has a sweet flavor with a soft texture when prepared well - the two times I had it on this cruise failed on both criteria. It had little flavor and was a little tough - very discouraging. That was balanced out by some different takes on staples like onion soup. A redeeming factor for meals was the buffet - they did have a small but varied selection that was different and, at times, more exotic than on other cruises we had been on. We always enjoyed ourselves there. Entertainment and activities were limited but the ones they had were enjoyable - they just needed more than the one offering but on a small ship ( Read Less

I wanted a daylight transit of the canal.That was great! The ship skipped 2 ports... Nicaragua and Guatamala...no compensation for that. I was disappointed that coming back to New York we passed the Statue of liberty at 4AM so I missed that and I was so much looking forward to it. The officers were invisible. I saw the captain only once the whole trip. Ray was a great cruise director. Some of the entertainment was very good. The bridge lessons were very helpful...Judy was terrific. Despite the long voyage and good food I managed to lose weight! That was a shock! I ate a lot of fruit. Maybe that is the secret. I will probably try another ship for my next cruise. The Navigator is getting tired. Meeting people from all over the world is the best part of any cruise. I have many new friends from Europe and Australia. Read Less

I have taken 2 other Regent cruises they were perfect Regent has to take a serious look at their WiFi offered for free. Most times it was either so slow or not available definitely not a good experience The crew excellent the food especially the new Compass Rose menu was perfect The complimentary laundry was another disappointment why not extend the hours? The big negative was our disembarking in New York The process was smooth until you left the terminal # 88 not a Regent representative in sight Carnival reps directed us to our bus area Then the fun began I was group grey 3 The buses for grey 1 & 2 were there (for 40 minuets) finally our bus to JFK arrived loaded and left my flight was departing at 1: 00 pm the driver enters the airport at 11:35 am dros off some at Delta then drives out of the airport and come back in. He stopped the bus at a traffic signal leaves to get directions! 4 of us got out opened the luggage compartment retrieved our 8 bags and walked to our terminal we got there at 12:16 I think Regent should look at Academy Bus Co and maybe don’t use a low bidder shameful for my wife and I to unload our bags and run to the terminal I did write a note to Regent with no response I guess now that Norwegian owns them it will go down hill from here! Overall, the trip was great. Negatives are few, but pretty major. Steak House was having major inconsistency issues. We went there twice. Both our visits had the same issues. Steak house was very disappointing. Food either over cooked or very under cooked. Just not all that good when it came to even the soups, salads and desserts. Service poor. The kind of restaurant you would never go back to. Main dining room was very good and consistent. The big surprise was the Italian themed restaurant located in the Buffett area at night. It was fantastic. From our great welcoming, seating, service, chats with the on site chef, to final hugs good bye, the place was great. We ended up eating there with new friends about 50% of our dinners. Christmas Goose on Christmas Eve! What a wonderful surprise. Veal to die for! The staff in this restaurant were all so wonderful. Our room was a standard balcony and we must say the rooms are huge. Large Flat Panel TV with a great diverse Movie selection. The walls and floors on the ship must have very good noise buffering as we heard very little noise from neighboring rooms. Bedding was substandard. We have never had such hard/heavy feather/fowl pillows and scratchy heavy blankets. We were very surprised at the pillow and blankets provided. I guess we should have complained, but we are not complainers. Big bathrooms, but showers are pretty small. Lucky for us we are averaged sized people. Our room stewards were lovely and efficient. We had a very smooth trip RT to Hawaii. I was worried about possible rough seas, but we were blessed with flat seas. I wish they would use better quality coffee beans in their espresso based coffee drinks, but you can't ask for everything. They seemed to struggle a bit on the drink service in the show room before the shows. Several times I just gave up and went to the nearby bar to obtain a glass of wine. I discovered that the wine selection was much better and more diverse then what was initially offered in the various dining rooms. After a couple substandard wines during a few dinners, I learned to ask what else they perhaps had available. They always had something better available complimentary. Loved the numerous soufflés offered in the main dining room for dinner dessert. Also best escargot appetizer I have ever had on a cruise. Entertainment was good. A few of the singers/dancers were weak and the sound struggled the first couple shows, but they seemed to get "in the groove" after the first couple shows. This was our first cruise with Regent and we were pleased to see that the fellow cruisers were a very casual bunch, considering how expensive the cruise was. We really enjoyed the lovely white glove tea time served daily with live music. Staff did a nice job presenting and serving a delicious selection of sweet and savory food items. Tea selection was a bit limited. As the cruise went on what little selection of tea offered got smaller and smaller. Did we just drink too much tea on this trip or did someone forget to order up more when the ship was in Los Angeles? Bar Service selection of high end liquors was great. Beer selection was a bit limited. It would be nice if they had a few microbrews or more varieties of beer from around the world. Given most of us on the ship are very well traveled, we would enjoy beverages from around the world. If we had one suggestion to the chef, it would be to spice up the food a bit. We found it a bit bland. We know the customers on the ship are "older", but we still would of liked to have more "flavor" when it came to ethnic foods provided. Other option would be to offer up seasoning sauces that could be served on the side. For example, a curry meal needs a bit of a tasty punch to it, or a side sauce provided to give the curry the needed punch in flavor. Over all we had a great time. The ship is very well run and the staff are great. We had just a couple disappointments. We have already booked an even longer Regent Cruise for 2019. You will not go wrong cruising with Regent. We chose this cruise because we were tired of being nickeled and dimed to death with other cruise lines & the Itinerary was one we had not experienced before, in addition my sister-in-law recently lost her husband and we invited her to join us. We went to some very nice ports and a few ugly ports... Guatemala and Ecuador. I have to say that this was a very enjoyable cruise except for the lack of bands and dancing facilities. For some reason the last time they rebuilt the ship some idiot decided that two poles in the middle of the only small dance floor on the ship was a good idea. Whenever more than three couples got on the floor it was impossible to move around. Also there is only one musical band on the ship. That means that there is zero dancing anywhere on the ship whenever the band is required for accompanying any performer of the production staff and dancers. This is ridiculous and cheap for a cruise company that makes a big deal out of being all inclusive. I have one really major complaint: We booked a penthouse cabin for three adults, there are only a dozen penthouse cabins supposedly set up for three passengers on the ship. The problem is that the cabins are just like all the others. Zero accommodations made for the third passenger. Here is a list of the problems associated with this setup: 1.) The pull-out couch had a lousy mattress. We insisted and got a real mattress (6 inchs thick) assigned to the bed that had to be removed and replaced each and every night for the 29 day cruise as it would not fit in the couch. Once the pull out couch and mattress are in place the bar and refrigerator cannot be used as the cabin is too narrow to open the refrigerator. It also make the balcony impossible to use once the bed is made as you have to crawl over the bed to open it. Because of this each morning I was forced to remove the matress, and then store it between the couch and the window, temporarily blocking half of our Balcony view every morning to give us access to the Balcony. 2.) The glassware had two of everything in the cabinet upon our arrival. We had to request glassware and stemware for three occupants & several times after using the bar the glassware was not replaced properly while we were away for a show or dinner. 3.) We paid for Butler service, overall the service was excellent except... when canapé's were delivered every night they were always delivered in multiples of 2, not 3, I attempted to explain this to our Butler, who seemed to speak very good English, but after numerous attempts gave up and divided what he brought as best we could. It was almost a game to decide which of the three of us was being shorted a selection each evening. In addition several times I had to request replenishment of beer and alcohol. 4.) If a cabin is properly set up for three, there should be end tables with drawers for three, not two, instead of a lamp table with NO storage for the third person. 5.) Inadequate storage space for 3, for a 29 day cruise. Of course there was an inadequate number of clothes hangers for 3 people for the cruise. It took several request to get enough into our walk-in closet. 6.) Inadequate lighting at the bed for the third person. On this ship, the Navigator, having a third person in a Penthouse suite is NOT advisable. By the end of the cruise, because of the inadequate facilities, we determined never to attempt a third person again, at least not in this suite. It seemed to me that when you add a third person for over $10,000 you should expect better. Our cruise was supposed to stop at Catalina Island. Upon embarkation, we were informed that we were NOT stopping in Catalina, but because of some problem, yet to be explained, we instead went to the stupid port of Ensenada. I believe they waited to tell us this upon embarkation because numerous people would have been on the Cruise lines case because of the change. I would have been one of them. There has been no mention of refunding some of our money because we lost out on a port all of us really wanted to go to. Excursions; Having excursions included in the price of the cruise is a good thing. You don't have to worry about getting back to the ship on time if you stay with the guide. You also don't have to do the amount of planning and coordination that is required to do them on your own. We did run across several minor issues that I felt happened because the Cruise line was being cheap. All cruisers paid a lot of money for this trip. This kind of stuff should not happen: 1.) They give you all the water you want to carry when you leave the ship, OK, who wants to carry more than one bottle each. On several occasions once on the coach no additional water was provided by the cruise ship and after a 6 to 7 hour tour of very warm and humid conditions having to pay a couple bucks for local water should not happen. On more than one occasion when we reached our destination on the coach the tour/guide had water for sale at ridiculous prices. Why is water not included in the tours? Good question... 2.) We signed up for "Lunch with an Astronaut" at the Kennedy space center. The lunch with the Astronaut was cancelled, but everyone still thought lunch was going to be provided, just that the Astronaut would not be there. Wrong, we had to buy our lunch after being ticked to have a lunch provided. Can we say, cheap. 3.) We went to a tour that was advertised as a drive through an animal park in Guatemala consisting of driving through the park in 6 passenger covered jeeps and station wagons.... Wrong, we drove through in our 50 passenger motor coach that barely made the turns and photography was hampered by the fact that the windows were glary and would not open, and of course if you were seated on the wrong side of the bus it was impossible to see, much get good photo's.... bummer OK, not so bad, but we were promised a lunch. The restaurant made sandwiches and burgers that all of us thought should have been provided, but Wrong, our provided lunch consisted of a small cup of fries and a local beer. If you wanted more, you had to purchase it on your own dime. Another cheap play by the Cruise. Not sounding quite so all inclusive is it. Many of the excursions were excellent, but not all of them. Whenever I have paid for an excursion with non all inclusive lines, I got really nice excursions. Regent could do a much better job and stop being so cheap. I also feel they should pre-tip the guides so they did not look for handouts at the end of there tour. Read Less

We choose this cruise because of the itinerary , Panama Canal , Costa Rica , Guatemala , all those countries we haven't been ..and who are very interesting . The cabins are not very spacious , but correct . No need to take a Penthouse class , anyway the area is exactly the same , it's only the situation on the ship that differs , and you get the help of a butler . There are 3 restaurants , but the capacity is not enough in the evening , so if you want to eat in the main restaurant you have to come early, or after 8 a'clock , otherwise you wil have to wait until somebody leaves and a table becomes free . Same thing in the Italian restaurant , and for the speciality restaurant you have to make a reservation . So forget about dining at your convenance . Service is very erratic , several times we had to wait one hour for breakfast , and we had only some fruit and an omelet ! Concerning the publicity about "free unlimited shore excursions "it is far from the truth - you can only get one a day , because you need at least two hours between two excursions . And in at least one port of call we could'n have an excursion . We had a discussen about that with somebody from the staff and he says that this is a normal situation , that they don't need to have an excursion for everybody . A careful evaluation on our return home leaves me with the following comments: The best..."all-inclusive" means just that...you pay for nothing - wifi, shore excursions, specialty restaurants, booze, friendliness of the crew, gratuities...nothing! The "very good"...cabins were comfortable and well serviced, for shipboard, we had good wifi, Prime 7 for steak was excellent (though service was a bit tardy). The "average" and "below"...daily entertainment on sea days was very limited, evening entertainment was weak. Restaurant service was very inconsistent - one day every efficient, next you would have to wave down staff to check on meal. The layout of the ship...all entertainment, lounges, etc. are at med-ship or at the stern...meaning that you must go on-deck to experience any port entries, sea life watching, etc. No lounge offers sea views while sipping a cocktail. Would we go back? Only if no other line offered an equal itinerary. Read Less

We stopped going to the shows. The restaurant service was okay but the lunch menu was cream soup daily. The lecturer had political opinions and didn't hesitate to state them. For one of the lecturers,. he spoke for twelve minutes about the policy of the new White House on the environment - irritating since he was Scottish. We did get to Devil's Island on this cruise. We have tried before at least three times on other cruises and never could due to weather. The Captain was Italian and had a hard time with his English We did see other officers around the ship but rarely saw the Captain. Internet serviced was impossible on the ship just about everywhere. I could only stay connected for 5 - 7 minutes at a time and then not again for many hours. Read Less

Our friends found a great deal for RSS 25th Anniversary cruise and so we jumped at the chance to join them and try our first luxury cruise (previously sailed with Celebrity, HAL and NCL). It started well with an upgrade to a balcony suite. Embarkation was smooth although they did not have our cards and had to escort us to Guest Services which was unusual. The ship has been recently remodelled and we were impressed by our cabin and the public spaces. The ship has notable vibration problems in the rear spaces such as the theatre and bars. At times all the bottles were clinking and sitting on stools almost required hanging on. It was also notable how much more this smaller ship moves. Especially in our forward cabin, this cabin was very noisy when arriving in ports as well. As a married couple in our early 40's we were regularly queried if we were entertainment when embarking so I think it highlights the average age is much higher than our previous cruise experiences. Unfortunately we did not meet our room attendant for the first 2 days and eventually when we queried how we were supposed to set up the personal bar, the assistant HK visited us with our attendants to find out why we had not been given a tour of our cabin and requests for our personnel requirements. Things improved after this. The first 2 nights in the Compass Rose we also found the service to be very casual and when my wife asked if she could taste a different wine to the daily special the sommelier quoted it was not a wine tasting event?!!? A query to the FB manager was handled quickly and professionally and we had no future problems. Many of us felt that the crew seemed very tired and uninterested and that this may have been due to them just completing the world cruise and apparently having a very rough crossing. After a couple of days service improved and after visiting Bermuda where the weather was great and the crew got a chance to get ashore, service notably improved from then on and by the end was an excellent standard. We appreciated the amazing dinnerware, quality of furnishings, pool chairs, sporting equipment, the library etc. It was a noticeable improvement in quality. We felt breakfast was average to good (except the caviar Sunday which was fun). Lunch options were plentiful but the standout was dinner. The compass Rose has a great dinner, Prime 7 was superb and the Italian was a nice change (although hard to get into with the limited seating). Entertainment was not as good as we have experienced on the larger ships, most other passengers thought the production shows were great. The last one was excellent but the earlier ones were a bit flat and the quality of some of the singing and dancing wasn't great. The theatre looks amazing but unfortunately gets very crowded and could be difficult to find a comfortable seating arrangement. We enjoyed the silly activities and the deck games. The pool area was nice but shade was limited and unfortunately rude passengers reserved deck chairs for hours without using them and this was never policed. Also many use multiple deck chairs which is even more arrogant. Included tours were quite good but we are not group tour people and with large groups and elderly members it made for very slow going. Overall we had a very fun time and appreciated the lift in quality especially as we were fortunate to sail on a very good deal which made the value for money even more outstanding. If we had paid full price the early service issues would have been unforgivable. The vibration, movement and noise issues would be annoying. At our age it is probably preferable to sail on the ships with a slightly different demographic but still appreciate what an amazing time we had. Read Less

We were a party of 4 and had cruised on Azamara,Oceania and various other cruise lines.An opportunity presented itself to try Regent so this is our review.The package was booked through Regent with flights with BA from local airport which were stress free to Athens.We booked a GTY de-luxe balcony suite but were upgraded to concierge.We were on Dk.8 FWD.It was noticeable that there was quite a lot of vibration at the aft end of the ship which has been reported in other reviews. The suite was spacious with all the amenities you would expect for this grade.All the crew were polite and looked after you with nothing begin to much trouble to them. We had booked 8 tours at the different ports which are included in the price and all were well organised and were very good. Free wi-fi was available,but if you had difficulty logging on there was a computer man on hand who was excellent in solving your wi-fi problems and made sure you were connected. "Now some of the not so good points". SHOWS: All the artists who came on board were very good,however there was 4 production shows with 3 of them just average and the last one begin very good.The singers were typical cruise artists,but the dancers were very good. FOOD: The food in all the restaurants was very good but the disappointment was the desserts which were bland and not to a standard of other competitors. My wife and I have a preference for smaller ships and although experienced cruisers have yet to explore the 'luxury' market. The small ships are rapidly disappearing from the mainstream providers and so time for a change. Our first foray into the field was Star Pride last year and of coarse any comparison is mainly against that experience. On both occasions our accommodation was a centrally located ocean view stateroom of similar size although Windstar made better use of the space and the bathroom included a double sink. A major difference between the lines was the size with Star pride having 212 maximum occupancy against the 480 of Navigator. This meant a proper theatre which was possible on Navigator and we found the shows exceptional and the theatre well designed. The MDR on both ships was the Compass Rose. Here a large variation occurred. Windstar attention to detail and quality of ingredients and presentation resulted in a far superior dining experience. Navigator hot breakfast and lunch were often left to long on the hotplate and were visually unappetising. A good cold selection was available. Star Pride had a large selection of hot and cold food which always looked appealing. Regent really was 'All Inclusive' with the result that we booked excursions that normally we would have designed ourselves, however all that we experienced were of a good standard and well organised. The above average branded drinks were provided by well trained caring and friendly staff. Before this gets boring let me sum up by saying that we very much enjoyed the Regent experience. Would we recommend it? Compared with Windstar where it was necessary to pay for drinks packages and excursions I would say that at the end of 10 days on Star Pride with big satisfactory grins on our faces. Navigator was good but not that good! Oceania is already booked. Read Less

We are dedicated Crystal cruisers and include two full world cruises among the 80 we have enjoyed. It was therefore something of a gamble when we cruised out of Barcelona on 16th August with RSSC Navigator. The main reason for this was that the itinerary include free tours as well as two anniversary dates. The gamble proved well worth while and all in all it proved to be one of the finest we have taken. Everything about the ship was excellent and the fact that we were limited to only two bookings at the speciality restaurant was immaterial. Other restaurants on board were excellent. Up till the last day I would have given full marks for everything on the cruise but, unfortunately, the last day was in fact a full sea day in glorious weather. The Navigator had around 600 guests but only about 250 sun loungers. The result was that the guests, predominantly British, were queuing for loungers around 8am armed with the under arm books. The books, and sometimes guests, occupied all free loungers all day. We are fortunate to have aspired to only six star cruises so this anomaly was totally unacceptable and something that happened only in my youth when visiting Spain with three small kids on charter holidays. This ship is due to embark on a full world cruise and unfortunately is totally inadequate. But for the lack on sun loungers we may have defected from Crystal but now will not use this ship again. I believe that other ships belonging to RSSC do not have this problem. Read Less

We chose this cruise for its fabulous itinerary. It did not disappoint. All of the places visited were just fabulous. Dining experiences were mostly excellent and the refurbishments particularly in Compass Rose are really lovely. This was our second cruise on the Navigator. We had the same cruise director as last year and unfortunately many of the jokes and general commentary were recycled...would be good to have a new repertoire after 12 months... The included excursions were a little hit and miss...some were really good and others not so. Particularly the day to Cinque Terra. Many hours waiting in the sun for local boat to leave with ship tender delays and then again waiting for local boat for return journey then waiting for tenders in blazing sun with no shade in any meeting areas. Possibly not best to do this in height of the hot weather season. Hopefully they might review the logistics of this particular excursion to improve the experience. A little advice for people about the night before disembarkation. We received a notice that dress code for this night would be relaxed as it is understood people will have packed to disembark next morning and so you could be as comfortable as you wish. Unfortunately not the case. We were turned away from Compass Rose for wearing capris and collared shirt and had to then unpack our more formal clothes to have dinner. Has never happened to us cruising before on pre disembarkation night, so we were a little peeved. But all in all it was a very nice cruise. Read Less

Sailed with Regent a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. This package had two nights in Verona and a visit to the Opera which was magnificent. The Regent rep in Verona was first class and so helpful. She recommended a really good place to eat which we went to on both nights we were there. The next day we joined the ship in Venice. Transfers and boarding Navigator went very smoothly. Suites are very comfortable and roomy. The ship has recently been refurbished and suites are beautifully furnished. A bit disappointed in the shower - this hadn't been refurbished and the tiles were somewhat tired and the grouting needed attention at the bottom. However, a small point, but worth mentioning on a trip of this price. the best thing about our suite was AVON our stewardess. She was fantastic - nothing too much trouble for her and always smiling and helpful. We were in 723 and if you are fortunate enough for her to still be there - she is special!! The food is excellent and all the staff are willing and helpful although service wasn't too sharp in Compass Rose for breakfast ,so we ended up going to La Veranda. However service was excellent in the evening in Compass Rose. The meal we had in Prime 7 was really good. Overall we felt the variety of the food wasn't quite so extensive as when we previously travelled with Regent and there have been a few cutbacks - the wines weren't quite so good. Having said that you could have drunk Champagne the whole of the trip! The itinerary was good and varied. Two long days on the trot in Rome and Florence - 10 hours each day - was a bit too much for us especially having spent time in both of these cities before. The half day trips were good and most enjoyable. The shows were good but very much geared to the American market. We didn;t rate the pianist very much. All in all, a good holiday but we think we'll go back to Cunard for our next trip Read Less

We have cruised a fair amount having been on Celebrity, Oceania and Crystal. We decided to try Regent as the itinerary was great and we heard amazing things about it. There were a lot of great things and some not so great. Firstly, check in was the easiest we have ever had. Our room was the largest as well and very easy for both of us given the walk in closet. The small size of the ship allowed for a great social atmosphere. We met a lot of nice, like minded people. However, the food was not as advertised. The steak house was excellent. The Italian restaurant hit and miss and the main dining room average. The service was also hit and miss. Some places very good other places not so much. Our cabin steward was fantastic, nothing was too much. Most of the dining room staff was very average. While on Crystal, nothing was too much. Here it was more of them telling us why it couldn't be done. The workout facilities were very small and extremely hot. Not what we would expect for a supposed ship of this calibre. Overall, a great time and a lot of fun but not sure we would rush to sail with them again. Read Less

I booked a guaranteed G suite 90 days out on the April Rome to Venice cruise in spite of the adverse comments on cruise critic. I guessed the refit in early April would solve all the comments on the décor though not perhaps the vibration issues. I have previously avoided this ship as she is a bit old and not purposely made for cruising but now she is in the Med I had little choice as we are off long haul for a bit. I logged into my Regent account immediately after booking and I was surprised to see a cabin had already been allocated. Normally this would be done a couple of days out from sailing. The cabin allocated 531 was one we would have refused had we not booked on a guaranteed basis as it was right on the end next to the stairs, entrance to Compass Rose and a WC. We did complain to Regent via our agent but we didn’t really expect any change and we didn’t get any. It does strike me that maybe Regent are using the guaranteed basis (at least on this ship) to get rid of cabins no one else will book. We won’t book that way again on this ship. Around 6 weeks out from our trip we received an email from Regent via our agent asking us if we would like to swap onto one of around 5 other cruises. This email offered the alternative cruises at the same price as we had already paid in full plus cash back and a suite upgrade. We chose the cruise which was very similar to ours but two days longer. We were offered an E suite having booked a G on guarantee so jumped at the chance. So that is how we came to be on the Malta to Venice cruise departing on 13th June 2016. We were booked on a fairly late Air Malta flight by Regent and arrived at the ship around 16.40. We met the Regent rep in the arrivals hall and along with 1 other couple we were asked to make our way to the car park and take our own luggage. Not a 6 star start to the holiday? We travelled in a rather shabby Mini bus which stunk of cigarettes but fortunately the transfer is short. The driver said he would deal with our luggage when we arrive at the port and we took our hand luggage into the check in hall. Having got our suite cards we were pointed in the direction of the ship but no help was available again to take our hand luggage. When we got on board and through the security there was no one to welcome us on board except a rather bored looking wine waiter who offered us a half glass of warm champagne. He was more interested in chatting to another crew member who had just come back from a shore trip. No one gave us help to find our cabin so we wandered off still with our hand luggage and found it ourselves. Just time for a quick unpack and shower before the lifeboat drill which of course no one had told us about? We had booked one night in Prime 7 in advance and as we normally do we ordered the Fillet Mignon but although it was well cooked it was rather tasteless. On our second visit it was much better. The food in general was good with no complaints. There is of course no Signatures Restaurant on this ship which we missed. Mobility scooters have landed!! There were at least two on this cruise. I have no problem with disabled people on the cruise but I do wish they would consider other passengers and not drive fast expecting everyone to get out their way or park them across the pool bar making it impossible for others to get to it. Our suite Fridge was not re stocked with beer and soft drinks towards the end of the cruise for some reason. We ordered Room service one day but as we entered the bay of Kotor before it arrived we went up on deck. They didn’t leave our breakfast in the cabin as we weren’t in but put a message on our phone so we gave up and went to the buffet. The cruise director was friendly enough but it would have been good if he had given more information on when was a good time to be up on deck such as Kotor and Venice. The excursions were good but the numbers on each trip are creeping up with some having well over 30 guests. This not really a problem but you do need radios with large groups so you can hear the guide. We did have them on some tips but not all. The refurbishment in April has improved things but there was still some work ongoing at the end of June. Our cabin had a few poorly completed trimmings but generally it was ok. Paint was flaking off the balcony doors and of course made its way into the cabin on our feet. In two ports we couldn't use the balcony as the crew were painting the outside of the ship from a cherry picker on the quay!! Given the ship was in dry dock only a matter of weeks before I can't see why this was necessary? The new larger table makes it difficult to get to the couch now but it does give a lot more room for food and drinks. The bathroom now lets the suite down as looks a little tired and the grouting and bath sealant needed redoing. Stocking of provisions seemed to be a problem on this trip for some items such as some breakfast cereal and certain beers. We also ran out of the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which was blamed on the high proportion of UK guests who preferred that to the alternatives. There is quite a bit of vibration towards the rear of the ship in spite of Regent advising me that it was peculiar to certain weather conditions in the Caribbean. This seems to be mainly when manoeuvring or slowing down. Sitting out on deck 10 the glasses do rattle a lot. Our cabin was towards the bow so we had no problems but I would advise having a cabin towards the bow if possible. We had no issues with the crew on board as all were friendly and helpful and the service was excellent. Things did take a slight dip when many of the experienced crew left in Croatia to go and join Explorer. Some of the new crew had never worked on a ship before and had obviously not been given adequate training. This put an extra load on the experienced crew to help them out but they did a good job of making sure we were well looked after. So there is some evidence of cutting costs but Regent is still my preferred cruise line. I am looking forward to a cruise on Explorer when the prices reduce a bit. Read Less

This was our third cruise on Navigator and we knew what to expect. Enough has been written about the condition of the ship, but she is going to drydock in March for rehab. I felt the ship was in pretty good shape considering. We booked this ship and itinerary because there really isn't much choice in the small ship market in the Caribbean. We really need the smallest ship possible for our mixed group of 5 including a 92 year old. Even after I booked the cruise I continued to worry myself by reading the mostly negative reviews, but taking them with a grain of salt! It did concern me that at one point I talked to a Regent rep about the reviews, and she stated that they never read the reviews! They stand by their product and reputation and don't care what people write. We had a mostly positive experience and really enjoyed certain aspects of the vacation. Even though tables can't be reserved at dinner, we went at 6:30 each night to Compass Rose and were able to sit at the same quiet table in the back with our excellent waiter Artiyun. We also greatly enjoyed noontimes at the Pool Grill although beverage service was spotty. Most of the time we simply walked to the bar and got our own drinks. The area in which customer service really broke down was the Destination Services situation. I signed us up - including our 92 year old - for shore excursions which were mostly bus tours. However, the walking distances from the ship to the busses was extreme and there was no assistance. It was hot and humid. Even much younger passengers were complaining. There were no golf carts or other assistance. In one port we asked the Destination Services hostess who was actually on the excursion with us for assistance in finding the golf carts (which we had seen around) for travel back to the ship and she stated that they were not her responsibility and she would not help. Finally a fellow passenger commandeered a policeman to have a golf cart come for a few of us with the promise of $20! In another port, the Destination Services staff person who was with us stated it was her first time in this port and she did not know where the restrooms were located, leaving us all with an uncomfortable 1 hour "shopping stop" with no restrooms. In another port, we were told that Regent would not allow their wheelchairs off the ship and the golf carts were not available - then we saw the neighboring Saba ship with many golfcarts marked with their banner, shuttling their passengers to the busses! Finally, the trip to Blue Lagoon to the Sea Lion Adventure was a disaster. We had taken this trip to do the dolphins 2 years ago and it was great. This year, because I knew the walking distance to the ferry was extreme, I sent our 92 year old ahead so he could walk at his own pace while I waited in the lounge for the trip tickets and the tour to be called. I even told the Destination Services staff this was my plan. When the tour was called and I had the three tour tickets, the tour operator would not give me all three wristbands. I had to run all the way to the ferry stop, get my father and husband, and walk them all the way back to the ship to get the wristbands. I almost cancelled the whole affair at that point. Finally about midway back the tour operation acquiesced and gave me the wristbands so I could get my father back to the ferry. At Blue Lagoon, we had about 5 minutes with the sea lions, then spent a very stressful and hectic hour trying to get the photos. It was chaos. When they called the 4:00 ferry I was still waiting in line. My husband told me to just get my money back, but the line at the cashier was too long to even do that. The ferry was overcrowded, and if we had not make it on this ferry, we would have been late to the ship. This is an excursion no responsible cruise line should offer to its passengers. It is indeed unfortunate that these type of experiences tainted an otherwise fairly successful trip. Read Less

The total cruise was very good, up to the expectation for Regent. Having spent over 400 nights on various of their ships, this did not alter my high expectations and observations. We had some bad luck with the weather, Hurricane edge off of Mexico-some deep holes in the water to go through- but the ships and crew seemed to handle it well-the guests were very quiet!. Jamie and Dana Logan were the cruise directors and keep things humming. Though we had to skip Cabo because of the swells, the rest of the trip was as promised and up to the Regent standards. The Destinations group reacted to challenges quickly and were very helpful in each of the ports. The routine of exchanging reservation slips for tour groups went well in almost all of the instances. This was my first time on Navigator, and at first was disapointed in the scaled down version from Marsiner and Explorer. Seemed that Main Street was Main Alley, but in retrospect, the compact style layout workes well, it was a surprise that all of the main public lounges are in the aft of the ship. No public areas in the forward portion so you could only see where you have been. The spa occupies these prime forward locations-maybe should be placed elsewhere and open to an observation lounge as on the their shops. The debarcation in Montreal was very efficient. All were off the ship by 9:30, which was a blessing. Would I go on on Navigator again??--Yes, I have booked an African leg in 2016 Read Less

My husband and I sailed to Alaska on Regent Cruise Lines' Navigator. Like many cruisers, I did a lot of homework prior to choosing a line. I encourage folks to read these reviews to help with clothing, expectations on excursions and the like. I want to start with the good. The scenery is absolutely incredible and the Navigator's small size allowed us to get to ports that some of the larger cruise lines could not. Speaking of ship size, we loved the smaller number of passengers that allowed us to get to know some really great people. The excursions were very enjoyable and Regent had plenty to choose from. Kudos! My husband is a real foody and one of the reasons we chose Regent was that our travel agent recommended it for the quality of food. Our favorite was Seti Mari and it's great Italian fare but we kept hearing about how good their signature restaurant 7 was. Well, we were disappointed to say the least. Foie Gras was 1) not good, 2) a spec on our plate and 3) the accompanying wine was subpar to say the least. I believe they sell it at WALMART! With that being said, we did not go back to 7. Breakfast in La Veranda was very good. The entertainment was great and the Navigator Lounge was always a blast. I think that any Alaskan cruise is going to end up being pricey. Regent is no exception, BUT it is great not worrying about tipping or any added expenses because all that is paid for up front. That allowed us to really enjoy ourselves. Will we cruise with them again? Yes. But I hope that they read these reviews and adjust some of there ways. Read Less

My family and I just returned from a trip from Vancouver to Seward on the Seven Seas Navigator. The landscape was beautiful. The excursions were great. The staff was friendly and attentive with the exception of some of the servers around the pool. The ship was clean. The food was excellent in the Compass Rose and Prime 7 and ok in other venues. The house wines (included) served in the Compass Rose were very good. Sometimes the service in the Compass Rose was slow. It was nice to have all gratuities included (even in the spa). The ship overall is well run and friendly. My main criticism is the fact that I was led to believe that the ship is renovated. This is far from the truth. Our cabin did have what appeared to be newly upholstered furniture, drapery, and carpet. However, the bathroom although spacious was original, and it looked it. The fixtures were accented in brass and were dated and worn. The granite was old and definitely not resurfaced. The cabinets were old just as tub and flooring as well! The wall paper throughout the ship looked dingy. The lighting in our cabin was brass (very 1980's). The furniture looked like it was from the 1980's as well. So, Regent's claim of refurbishment is greatly overstated! For the money we spent we expected real renovation--especially since we had two rooms! One good thing is that the beds were comfortable and the linens were decent. On the passaged from Sitka to Seward the seas were very rough. For the first time on a cruise, I experienced debilitating sea sickness that lasted from mid day until well after midnight. I don't know if the fact that the ship is older and/or smaller contributed toward it, but it was quite miserable. Read Less

I have previously had 9 cruise experiences with Fred Olsen, Princess, Celebrity, and Azamara over the last 9 years; all very enjoyable in their own way and using conventional star ratings I would place these progressively in the range 3.5 to 4.5. I jumped at the chance to travel on Regent Navigator from San Francisco to Alaska to Vancouver because it ticked so many boxes never having visited those parts and never having done a “six star cruise”. Included excursions, premium drinks and speciality dining sounded good although presumably we pay for these in the cruise price. What then would be the six star added value items? Before setting off I resolved that it would be anything that elicited a “wow” response. Before getting into detail I must say that this was probably my favourite cruise experience to date. Decent weather in a tranquil early season Alaska devoid of other cruise ships obviously helped but credit is due to the included excursion programme which was of good quality. 1) The Ship. It has the potential to wow with very large well fitted suites and for a smaller ship decent entertainment and activities. It is spacious and, a first for me, I did not have to queue or scramble for a seat anywhere in the entire cruise. However it has some current practical issues to contend with including vibration which has already been well-reported. Two other things stood out for me. Firstly a general lack of freshness in the décor and fittings not least in the bathrooms where the tiling looks as if it needed attention some time ago. Secondly the Connoisseurs Club for brandy and cigars; amend this to read Indoor Smoking Room which is a non-sealed and non-extracted room located midships adjacent to other public areas and a main stairwell. 2) The Food. Prime 7 was very good as was La Verandah buffet for breakfast and lunch. The main Compass Rose restaurant produced food marginally better than my previous cruises but not enough to elevate it to fine dining. It tickled me to see that even in a “six star” environment the waiting staff would still try the trick of ordering and taking delivery of consecutive hot courses leaving one to stand whilst you ate the first. 3) Premium Drinks. These seemed to be freely available in all areas other than wine with meals where the standard was fair but far from premium. For the latter you have to pay a very substantial supplement. The situation was exacerbated by two things. Firstly there was no list of what standard wines were available; they like to offer a different wine each night but you are free to ask for anything else if only you knew what there was. Secondly, and linked to this, the waiters and some sommeliers were unable to articulate what wines they had. More than once I was told they did not carry the wine I had had the previous evening. 4) Service on Board. Service standards were no better or worse that my other cruise experiences. The exceptions were negative. The bars were lightly staffed resulting in delays particularly at peak times. The waiting staff had a tendency either by accident or design to serve you with a similar drink to what you ordered if an open bottle of the former was more easily available e.g. champagne / sparkling wine. The bar staff could not make a gin and tonic unless you like a bucket of gin in a bucket of ice topped with flat tonic. OK you say ask for what you want. I did but the waiter struggled to comprehend a request for a G&T with a sensible amount of gin, a little ice and fresh tonic. I should add that they use 33cl cans of mixer so there is a good chance your mixer may have been standing open for a while. 5) Overall Cruise Management The flight arrangements, airport greet and transfer, managing people on and off the boat were all excellent and of a higher standard than previously experienced. The let-down, having been assured pre-cruise we would be looked after on disembarkation day as the included flight did not depart till 9pm, was that we were dropped off at the airport 9 hours before flight departure. To a minor extent this also involved the Regent shore side contractor not delivering on what Regent promised. So, sorry Regent, whilst there were some good and indeed excellent features I did not experience any wow moments. However, as most if not all the concerns mentioned above (and also by others during the cruise I would add) are capable of resolution there is no reason why that could not change in the future. Maybe the planned refit will deal with some. My rating for this cruise is 4.5 stars. Read Less
