We chose Carnival for our first cruise and boy did they not disappoint us!!! We had the most amazing time and can't wait to book our next cruise. Everything from the staff, food, excursions, cleanliness of the ship and cruise director (Schwartz) were AMAZING!!! We had the most amazing cabin steward (Wai), she took care of our every need and remembered our first names from the very start of the cruise, which was very impressive!!! We swam with the sting rays in Grand Cayman and snorkeled in Cozumel. The only thing we would suggest is in Jamaica, book an excursion, the locals are very pushy and we could have done without that. Overall we had an excellent experience and will definitely be sailing with Carnival again. We did go to the comedy show and it didn't disappoint, I haven't laughed so hard in a very long time. We also played bingo, went to the casino, and ate at a couple of the specialty restaurants that were amazing. We are still talking about Guys Burgers and can't wait til our next cruise. Read Less

I have been on many cruises more than 10. I have also been on many Carnival Ships. I thought because this was a brand new ship we couldn't go wrong. That was not the case. The biggest problem with this ship is there are so many cabins for the almost 4000 people that theres not much left for entertainment. The food in my opinion was terrible. We ate in the dining room as well as the buffet and I was completely disappointed with the food. It was less than mediocre. I waited appox 25 minutes at times for a drink. They have taken all the fun entertainment away. No more Vegas style shows, no more beautiful glass elevators. No more elegant dining unless your willing to pay $95.00 a person in they're steak restaurant. They have replaced the entertainment with passenger cabins. Small pools, NO ENTERTAINMENT HORRIBLE FOOD. Sad because Carnival use to be one of the best. Read Less

Everything was perfect! We loved this boat. Our Stewart Ian was fantastic. We stayed on the Havana deck (5). It was so nice we never explored the rest of the boat! It was so worth the extra money. Carnival has changed the way they clean the your state room. If used to be twice a day, now it is only once. Your Stewart will ask which do you prefer morning or evening. The downside was not having fresh towels for that second shower of the day. It wasn’t that big of deal. If I had to pick one thing I wished it was done differently it would be the siding doors had a key pad or an exit to go directly to the pool. As it is now you have to lock your sliding door from the inside and walk through the bar to get to the pool if you want your room locked. It wasn’t a well thought out plan in my opinion. Other than that we had a wonderful time and we would do it again! Read Less

I chose this cruise because I like the new larger ships. It was also easier for my bother to fly into the area from Sweden. We traveled with 5 sibs and spouses, also my sisters oldest son and 3 of his kids. Loved the ship, but missed the awesome spa we are used to from the Breeze and Dream. They did away with that great thalasso pool! I sure did miss that! Another disappointment was the new lounge. They changes from those old school large seating areas with tables to basically folding chairs on the ground level, other seats were very hard to see anything. The dinning seamed to be better then past Carnival cruises, including the main dining room. We stayed in a spa balcony cabin, nothing changed here, still a nice room, but seams like they could work on giving the cabins a fresher look. Our steward was fine, not much interaction like on other ships. Did a great large group excursion in Cozumel, Private Oasis At Passion Island! It was $739 for up to 12 people. They treated us like Platinum VIP guests, food, drink and our own private area of beach away from others on the island. Check it out, it must be catching on, because the price just went up to $799. Para sailed in Grand Cayman, also fun, we always book with the Carnival website. Both embarkation and disembarkation went very smooth, We are Platinum sailors, but the others in our group were not, and we all managed to get on ship the same time. Read Less

We have cruise several Royal Caribbean ships, and were looking for a change so thought we'd try the newest Carnival ship, the Horizon. She is a beautiful ship with all sorts of great options for fun. From their thermal spa to the Skybikes and Skycourse we tried it all. We chose a spa balcony room on deck 11, which was a perfect location for us since we used the spa, the running track and pool areas often. The buffet did not have as many choices as we're used to, but there were a large number of free food choices available for breakfast and lunch around the pool deck also. My favorite was the Blue Iguana breakfast burritos. The pizza was great too! The staff was great, the comedians were hysterical, shows were a bit artsy for me but were ok, and the cruise Director Schwartz was amazing! His energy was infectious! Only thing I didn't love was the casino smelled terrible, like stale cigars or something. And since deck 3 didn't go through we usually had to walk through casino to get to dining room. Read Less

We are platinum members on NCL. We thought we would give Carnival a try. Embarkation was a breeze! From cruise port door to lunch in less than 45 minutes. Great job on that. Our spa balcony stateroom was lovely, nice colors, plenty of space, comfortable. Our cabin Steward, Alfredo was top notch, friendly, always around and just a very nice young man. We thank him for being so attentive. Most common areas are ok to look at nothing that elegant or fabulous. People go crazy over the elevators but we found it very efficient, our cabin was on the top of the ship, we had no trouble with the elevators. The thing that made this cruise was the Cruise Director, Schwartz! He was really terrific and made the events quite fun. There were so many things we enjoyed in the area of entertainment, this is another thing Carnival does really well. The movies on the deck were quite enjoyable as well. Nice touch offering blankets! We enjoy the spa on any of the ships we have been on so we booked the spa balcony. The first day the staff was oh so nice after that wow they got crankier and crankier. The spa itself is very disappointing, the thermal pool is pretty tiny and can't fit more than 6 people. They do have the wondrous stone loungers but if you are not able to get one, well there's no place for your to relax and you have to leave if you have done the steam and sauna etc. The locker room was adequate. We booked the Italian restaurant and the Steak House for specialty dining, but also went to Pig and Anchor one night. The Italian restaurant was terrible. Food was cold and quite underdone, we left most of it, the Steak House served a great meal and is worth the cost. Pig and Anchor...oh my! Lunch there was pretty awful as well. Does Guy Fieri follow up on his namesake? If he did he would find out that this place is butchering his name, the food was barely edible. Most of it tasted like reheated frozen food. So that left the main dining room and buffet, both served pretty miserable foods any time we tried dinner there. Breakfast was ok, not much on flavor or variety. Trying to get an omelette at the buffet was a long long wait. The Gelato at lunch time was delicious! Cakes we pretty and mostly not very tasty. I will give good words to the Pizza place, Blue Iguana and the Guy's Burger place, all three served pretty good foods. We are still reeling from some stomach ailment we got on board, not sure what it was. The adult area, Serenity was nice but getting a chair is virtually impossible unless you go up at 6 am. Wow! It was always hard to find a place to sit, you end up milling around until you stalk someone leaving. Perhaps Carnival can convert this area or part of it to a limited access pay for area with guaranteed seating. I'd pay for that! Casino was smoky and pretty smelly, we stopped in for a brief few minutes once or twice. Getting off the ship and back on at the ports was also very easy and quick, I give Carnival great praise for people moving overall. We did our own excursions so I can't speak for ship excursions. We went to Bohio Dive Resort in Grand Turk, walked all around San Juan and had dinner at Vaca Brava, went to the Marriot St. Kitts on a day pass, and the most fun excursion was Billy Bones Cigarette Boat All Day Excursion, it included snorkeling, beaching, lunch, airport beach and more swimming/snorkeling. Lots of fun! There are a lot of things this ship does well, there are things that this ship does not do well. If a nice dining experience is important to you, I would not recommend this ship. I can't speak for all Carnival ships just this one. Overall, I give high praise to Embarkation and Debarkation, Cabins, Cruise Director, Room Steward, Steak House and Casual Lunch at Pizzeria, Blue Iguana and Guy's Burger. We unfortunately will not try another Carnival Cruise. Read Less

We took this cruise with 5 other couples and we all had a great time. Early and late seating was full when we booked and we were afraid that we wouldn't get to sit together at Anytime Seating but we were able to get a table for 12 and we were able to keep that table each night at the same time. That worked out well. We all thought the food was great--don't know how anybody can complain about the food with all the choices that are available. We were impressed with all the various seating areas you could eat at the Market Place Buffet on the Horizon. We never had a problem finding a seat even at peak eating times. The 2 aroma steam rooms in the thermal suite were great. Most of the steam rooms in most of the ships we have been on are not hot enough but these were nice and hot like they should be. The comedians were very good. The juggler that we have seen before was very good. The dancing shows in the Liquid Lounge were quite an extravaganza but we are sort of getting tired of the dancing and singing at the top of their voice (it sometimes just seems like a lot of yelling that you can't understand). Embarkation and debarkation were a breeze--the best we have experienced in the 19 cruises we have taken. The water slide and sky ride were exciting. We were surprised at how many ships were at each port. 7 ships were at St Martin and 3 of those were the individual cruise companies largest ships. However, the port seemed to absorb the 24,000 people pretty well. Seems like most of the ships leave and return on the week end and not sure why they do that. Would like to see some of them leave in the middle of the week and maybe that would alleviate some congestion at the airport, motels, and ports. Read Less

Good: The ship has so many nooks and crannies and places to get away, there was always a way to party or take it easy. Loved the skyride and my kids loved the theater and the water slide/ ropes course/ sports complex. As far as bars go, we Adored Pig and Anchor enjoyed the presentation at the alchemy bar and had fun at the comedy club and ocean plaza bar. The service was outstanding everywhere, except maybe the red frog rum bar, but they are busy ALWAYS. Ivana makes the best bloody marys at Pig and Anchor, Marvin was our room steward and he did a great job of taking care of us. Ollie was our waiter in the dining room and he was always going above and beyond for our big group of 11. Schwartz was the best cruise director I've had on a ship, he made the parties great. Sea day brunch, guys burgers, blue iguana cantina were great. We stayed in the family harbor area and loved our room and the lounge was really helpful, especially on port days for eating breakfast or having a small lunch when it was late, and awesome that we didn't have to go to lido on debarkation for lunch. My kids also loved all the free movies. The ship was also very smooth. Lastly, it was the smoothest embarkation and debarkation ever. Bad: Our room was an ocean view family harbor deluxe. It was a nice size, but tight for 5 people. (Go figure!) It needed more storage also. A big downfall is the room was underneath the elevator on the third floor and it was loud EVERY morning. We ended up borrowing an ambient noise machine from my sister and it helped a little. Also, the ship has a confusing layout, and my husband never really figured it out. The pools were really small too. Food in dining room was hit or miss. Read Less

It was our first experience with sailing on the Carnival Cruise Line. We have sailed 27 times using five other cruise lines in the past. The ship, the Carnival Horizon, is very nice and the decor very eye appealing. The staff was a friendly group and willing helpful and accommodating. The food was ok but not exceptional in any way. It was rather repetitive actually except for the evening meals in the dining room. The dining room evening meals did offer a variety but was just ok in the preparation and taste. I probably would have given the ship a rating of five overall except the food lowered the score. “Schwartz” was the cruise director and rated in my top three all time directors. He was super! He stayed on top of things, was very energetic, seemed to enjoy his job, and actually was some of our best entertainment. It was a very relaxing, enjoyable cruise. Read Less

Embarkation is standard - when you check in online, you get a 30 minute window to show up. If you show up outside the window, you go in another line. Passports are check before security. Keys are in your room mailbox. Getting on the ship is much faster now. Carnival app - not sure why no other cruise has this. Has all activities on the app. What food is available. Chat with your group for $5 for the entire cruise. Can check into dining for any time dining. Maps of decks. A lot of rooms are smaller and used more efficiently. The main theater is on 2 floors instead of 3. Only some small tables on the outside. The main floor seats are like dining seats, so they can be move around based on the show needs. No tables so there are more seats in a smaller area. There is a bar in the theater. Punchliner club is smaller as well. Moveable seats with no tables. Seems like less capacity than before. Need to line up to get in. There wasn't comedy every night like other ships. Not sure if that is the new standard or because this ship has a higher focus on kids. The 2 comedians on this ship repeated shows. I've been on other Carnival ships where the comedians never repeated a show. Water park area looked good for kids - large play area and 2 water slides - longer than avg. Theme is Dr Suess - Cat in the Hat and Thing 1/2 were on board. Skyride - like a bicycle in the sky. It's more exercise than a ride. There is one part where it is downhill on each track. There are 2 tracks - same length. 2 cars per track, so it can take a while to get on. Absolutely nothing allowed in your pockets - they have temporary lockers to put your belongings in. Skycourse - obstacle course in the sky. 2 tracks - 1 easier than the other. Normally lines weren't long for this one. Walk across an elevated course tethered to a beam above. Cabins - we had an inside cabin - they are shorter and wider now. Instead of 3 door cabinet, there are 2. from the washroom door in, the wall is on an angle so there is more room by the desk area. TVs are large 42" LEDs. Very few channels. CBS news instead of CNN. Beds were comfortable. Luggage fit under bed. Washroom same size as before. Desk has 2 usb plugs in addition to regular power outlets. Mini fridge in room. Standard safe. No more controls for speaker announcements. Shower have containers of shampoo and body wash. Shower head power is adjustable. Test water temp for kids - can be very hot. Room stewards come once a day - you can ask for 2x a day. Thermostat is electronic instead of dial. Dining - seemed liked there are more any time dining slots now. Food was excellent- as good as more expensive supposedly luxury cruise lines. Service was great. Big emphasis for servers to address you by name. For any time dining, you check in on the 5th floor by the cafe. They give you a ticket with your table and then you proceed to the restaurant. The carnival app allows you to check in on the app- tells you your table number when ready and you just show up at the entrance. Lido buffet - seating decor is much nicer now. Looks more like a restaurant. Food is no longer against the kitchen area. There are 2 rectangular areas for food. More efficient use of space. Separate area for salads, desserts. One day was chocolate day - entire area of chocolate cakes/treats. Snacks - Pizza normally has a line. have about 5 types of pizza, but mostly make cheese and pepperoni. Deli sandwiches. By the pool, there is a Mexican shop and Guy's burgers. Juice was always available - other ships they were only available at meal times. Specialty dining - seems like with the extra space they have more specialty dining. Steakhouse, seafood, Guys bistro, Sushi, Teppanyaki, Italian. There is a brewery on board. Entertainment - standard singing and dancing. Dancers and female singers were strong. Male singers were ok. The other musicians were more geared to the older crowd - little odd given the kids theme. Shops - more shops. Jewellery store was one of biggest I've seen on a ship. Usual great alcohol deals. Candy store is about 4x bigger than other ships and has ice cream. Atrium - main 3 story atrium has your standard bar. There is a seperate area for musicians now, instead of playing on the main floor area. There is a 3 story column that is basically a video screen - images are constantly changing. There is a 2 story one in the casino. Pool area - main pool area only has 1 pool now instead of 2 - allows for more chairs and room for dancing....makes sense. the upper decks are now narrower and only have room for 1 row of chairs vs 2 on other ships. They added a pool on the 5th floor aft of ship- need to go through Havana room to get there- not sure if it is only available to rooms backing onto the pool. As the upper decks are narrower, it is an issue to get chairs on sea days. Go early. They do walk around and put sticker on unattended chairs warning they will come back and remove your towels. Some aggressive passengers will remove your towels even if you haven't been away long. Photos - finally using technology. They are available to view electronically. they ask for your cabin # when they take your picture and you can view them later for purchase. Movies - standard big screen by main pool area. Also an IMAX theater on board - $10. Casino is still smoking. The walkway goes through the middle of the casino instead of the side....so we avoided crossing on deck 4. Ventilation was poor. Kids clubs - looked great. Dr Seuss theme was nice. If I had young kids, I would go on this ship. Looked like a lot of fun for young ones. Ocho Rios - dock right by Ocho Rios beach. $3 to get in. Clean. Go to the further area - less sea grass and less people. Water sports are available. We went snorkeling out to the reef less than a mile off shore - there was 4 of us - they started at $45 each, we got it for $20 - not much out there. There is zero snorkeling on the beach. To get to the beach, hang a sharp left out of the main port gates, towards the marina. Grand Cayman - have to tender into port. Can take some time to get off ship. If you have your own tour, go early. Sit on the upper deck to get off faster. Cozumel - The port is south of the main city. They force you to go through a duty free shop that is super narrow - like rush hour in a subway. There can be up to 4 ships in at once - I think they time it so no more than 2 arriving at the same time. They have dogs smelling for food in your bags, which slows things down as well. A variety of vendors in port - seemed expensive. Don't do the jeep tour - complete waste of money - rent your own jeep and drive around - it's safe and the roads are not busy, no crazy drivers like other islands. Jeep tour takes you to a tequila place and tries to sell you over priced tequila, then to a fruit juice place charging USA shopping mall prices, except they don't have minimum wages, rent or taxes, and the lunch places charges more for water than in the USA - completely taking advantage of tourists. Beaches on the east side of the island had nice waves - not suited for kids. if you have kids, go to Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park - just take a cab, not a tour. It is just south of the port. Debarkation - we did self debarkation. Was easy and fast. Customs was faster than normal as well. Summary - if you have young kids, this is one of the best ships to go on. Otherwise, better value on other Carnival ships. Read Less

The ship has it all and the staff was the best we have ever had. The elevators were the only challenge we had all week. It seems like Carnival has started to figure things out. Pictures were easy to see and hassle free. The production shows were completely different and diverse. Plenty of live music around the ship. The sky ride and sports complex were really nice. The lines were really long for the sky ride. It was usually over an hour wait. The ship never felt crowded after the first day. We had an ocean view deluxe room. It was the largest room we have had on a ship. 2 bathrooms! I would definitely go on this ship again. Read Less

I thought being a new ship I would be thrilled but when we walked on it felt like walking into a regular hotel. Maybe I am one of the rare few but I like the wild and splashy décor in the lobby like the other ships have. I did not like the one level dinning room with the low ceilings. This was the first time we had the 6 pm dinning and I did not like it at all, felt like we were really rushed. I realize that they have to get ready for the 8:15 dinner but I didn't like feeling like I had to eat really fast. Buffet food was really weird at times, made me wonder what your average, picky youngster would eat. Steak house was great, definitely recommend if you can go. Now on a positive note. Staff on this ship were fantastic. Our room steward Su on deck 6 was the best. Every single person we encountered was friendly and always working hard. Balcony cabin was like the others which was fine, plenty of room and storage. If you have children or young adults there is a lot of things for them to do, movies, arcade, skyride so this ship is definitely a good choice for them. We spend a lot of time in the casino, I found this one to be small in comparison to other ships but staff and casino host were great. Overall I think that I may stick to other Carnival ships which I liked more. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was going to ports that we hadn't been to before, and we wanted to go on the brand new ship, so we booked the Horizon. We loved most things about the ship, but there were a few that we were disappointed in as well. The Liquid Lounge is very small for the shows, and the steakhouse was not near as good as we have had in the past (and we were disappointed with the location, just didn't seem "special" on this ship like it has on the others). We enjoyed Pig & Anchor, Bonsai Teppanyaki, and the Italian restaurant was good too! The elevators were slow, and people didn't know how to, or didn't care to operate them properly, but it wasn't that big of a deal. The pool was small, the serenity deck is right beside the waterworks, so it was loud at times. We loved the decor of the Horizon. It was colorful and fun. The gym was small, but I think it was fine. It wasn't overcrowded when we were there. We were also disappointed in the Piano bar. The main entertainer, although very talented, could not take requests and didn't sing. He played a lot of original songs, but it just wasn't the lively time that we have enjoyed in the past. Overall we had a great time and enjoyed the ship. Read Less

Embarkation flowed well Only issue was our new, unopened bottles of SMART water was confiscated by Security for the reason they said "you can't have plastic bottles on the ship." However, you can purchase plastic bottles of water on the ship, and you can bring them on in the ports, and there are plastic recycle bins on the ship so apparently you can have plastic bottles on there. So, terrible reason Carnival; come up with something more honest. Also, if you can't have plastic bottles on the ship then 3/4 of my toiletries should have been confiscated too. I think they wanted our SMART water for personal use. Another confiscation was my travel iron "they" said for safety reasons. When you pull your room card out of the wall socket it shuts down all electricity in the room. So what is the safety issue? The curling irons and hot rollers don't get confiscated even though they use the same electrical outlet as the iron. Don't try to be pro wrinkle free; you have to go join the masses waiting to use the iron if you want to look nice on formal night (go early; you'll still be in a line) Once on the ship our room wasn't ready so we went to the Marketplace (buffet) and chilled. I liked the addition of the bar tables in addition to dining tables. Our room on the Spa Deck was really nice and looked just like the website photos. I did not like this ship! All through the ship you can see Carnival $ cutbacks. This ship is computer controlled everything. Hopefully, there is a backup plan for computer crashes and computer dumps. Compared to other Carnival ships the decor is boring, the clubs are boring, the biggest disappointment was the Atrium; so boring. Showtime is no longer like Broadway shows or broken up by other acts. Every night was the same group of young people singing. That was it, just singing all the way through the show. The club was unimpressive, while the group was singing "they" would digitally display these unfavorable backdrops. The midnight buffet is the same food as the dinner buffet; no longer the extravaganza display of food and talents, ice sculptures, etc. Another huge noticeable cutback by Carnival. The mercantile store was replaced by a Victoria's Secret store. So be prepared and bring enough sunscreen, headache pills, women necessities, etc. We ate our meals in the dining room for food quality reasons, but beware, there are extra charges for food in the dining room. The pool games were boring; not like the pool games of the past. Even the men's hairy chest contest is not played the same. The casino is a designated smoking area so it ALWAYS reeked of nasty, stale, gross, cigarette smoke. The second hand smoke in it will kill you -- take a mask with you to wear in it. We liked the ports, did an excursion in each of them which were all good, milled around the tourist shopping areas and felt safe. Enjoyed the outdoor movies under the stars. Don't stand in line for popcorn; the popcorn is stale and cold and hard to eat. Cruises of the past you weren't moneyed to death by Carnival for everything; now you are and on top of the pricey cruise price that you would think would cover more than it does, get ready to pay out a whole lot more. I suggest you watch the daily Fun Times for all the dining places available and take advantage of them. The only thing I found on the ship worth the money were the specialty donuts at Java Blue. I spent our whole 8 days reflecting on cruises of the past and comparing it to this one. So disappointing in so many areas. You can definitely tell where the $ cutbacks are. I actually felt bad for all the new cruisers and the young people for they don't know what they are missing. Read Less

My son picked this cruise and i did enjoy the islands, but most of all i enjoyed the weather, everyone seemed to experience snow and cold before hand. Getting onboard was amazing, we just walked on and were have lunch in like 5 minutes. The elevators worked fine if you followed the protocol of one click per person in your group, but many people would just join in our car and then when the door opened up on another floor already full, those people got mad, this especially happened on port days, so folks, follow the rules. We really do love kidding the staff they all made us laugh. Chairs were forever saved by a towel or shoe for hours with no one in them , to those people, i think you are rude and only thinking of your self. We laughed when the very strong accented captain came over the loud speakers for the daily update what he said was: this is the captain speaking from the navigational deck, what it really sounded like was: this is the captain speaking from the irrigation ditch, haaahaaa we always laughed at that one. Favorite port was curacio, wish we could have stayed a day more. There wasn't much for the 13 year old to do, so that needs to be worked on. Our family never got to use it as it was only working 2 days of the 9 days I was on the ship. The staff cleaning the rooms were GREAT!!! The staff in the dining room were ok. The time u had to wait for your food was bad!! Then they never checked on us, so if something was wrong your stuck, in fact we walked out one of the nights due to this Read Less

This is our 5 th cruise and by far most disappointing one! Food options that you don’t have to pay for are very limited and the almost the same every day. Salad bar is basically non existent. Breakfast doesn’t start until 7, so if you are a early morning person you have to wait forever to eat. The entertainment was no where near as good as any of our previous cruises. And it they scheduled everything around the same times. So you spend all day with nothing to do unless you want to pay $12.95 to watch a movie in the imax theatre. This is the only cruise we have been on that you don’t have to be early for the entertainment. You can show up 10 min late and still get a great seat. I could go on and on but don’t I don’t want to rant. We will never cruise with carnival again! Very disappointed! Read Less

I’ve been cruising for the past 15 years and I will try to give an objection opinion for all of you. I won’t include the good and bad of the cruise ports we went on or the weather which have nothing to do with the ship. So, I’ve been cruising for 14 years and have seen a lot of changes in the industry. The Carnival Horizon is a gorgeous ship. It was very clean, my girlfriend and I loved the décor and the center area with its funnel shaped changing screen is a site to behold. The cabins are also nicely appointed and very comfortable. The new elevator system is neat but doesn’t always work as intended (not as fast as you would like). The restaurants that we tried were excellent. But the Carnival Horizon represents a new vision with cruising which has caused me to say that, after 23 cruises, this is my very last cruise. It used to be that you paid your cruise fare and everything was included. Tipping was done with cash and you paid extra for good service. Yes, even during formal night, a lot of the guys would wear tuxedos. Then little things started to change. You still get your towel animals done by your steward but the little mints they used to give you are gone. On past cruises, you could order room service anytime you wanted and pretty much get anything you wanted at no extra charge. This is vastly different on Carnival Horizon where room service without charge is only available from 2pm-10pm and the available free room service menu is limited to a few sandwiches. Anything else (and everything else outside of the 2pm-10pm time frames) is an extra charge. A few years ago, cruise ships added a specialty restaurant where you could pay extra to get a better dining experience. The Carnival Horizon has five such restaurants. We did try Jade ($15 extra per person) and it was a great Asian meal for sure. But Fahrenheit 555 will set you back an extra $30 per person. The regular dining room was good too but they tried to get you to buy wine or fresh pressed juices. Don’t get me wrong, all of this looked good. But it does seem like less and less is included in your cruise fare. The Carnival Horizon also has an IMAX theater which is very impressive…but a movie will cost you $12.95 per person. They also have an interactive theater which we liked. But again, this was $5 per person. I will say the entertainment on the Horizon was pretty good and better than you would expect on a cruise ship. Our favorite show was Soul Bound followed by Vintage Pop. We liked the Havana Club and pool. You can only use the pool after 7pm unless you have a Havana cabin. But the Havana pool, the Serenity adult area, the shows and restaurants were all good. The buffet was okay but I really do think it was designed on this ship to be good but not too good…so you’ll try the specialty restaurants for an extra charge. But like everyone else, I hate, hate, hate automatic gratuities and so, like a lot of people on our cruise; I waited in line (a long line) at the customer service desk the last day to have the gratuities removed. The reason is that I always pay cash tips for great service and the automatic gratuities added to your bill do not go directly to the people that waited on you or really to anyone else but the cruise line. The reason is that an employee on a cruise ship signs up for a 6 month or 9 month contract with a salary. That salary is based on what tips the cruise line would be expected to receive but I like to tip the people that waited on me directly. So, the bottom line for us is that not too much is included in the cruise fare. The cruise lines seemingly want you to pay extra for this and extra for that. I’m not even including the typical shopping on board for t-shirts, cheap jewelry and other things that we’ve come to expect. But a vacation is always about getting the best value for your money. In our case, we took a 6 night cruise, with taxes and port charges added, for a total of $1,313. But…then you have to pay $132 to park at the port…then you have to pay $144 ($72 each) for internet on board the cruise ship. This comes to about $264 a day for a very small cabin (and yes you will hear your neighbors), some decent food at the main dining room and a couple of good shows. So you really do have to ask yourself if this would be worth it to you. In our case, we think that at this point, going to an all-inclusive land based resort (such as Sandals) might be the better deal. The cost may be a little more but your room will be stunning, no constant announcements about shopping, no pre-paid gratuities, no up charges for a restaurant. So, in summary, the Carnival Horizon is a gorgeous ship, but what you get for the money no longer makes sense. Read Less

This was our first time with carnival but our 15th cruise. We thought we would give them a try and liked the look of the Horizon. We were so glad we did. We absolutely loved it! We thought carnival were excellent and the ship was modern and so beautiful. EMBARKATION was so easy, we arrived at our allocated time and we were on the ship in 10 minutes. We choose an inside CABIN as so cheap and it was surprisingly large, very very clean and had everything we needed. The ship was beautiful, we loved the Atruim, the decor, the modern art, all of it really ! The FOOD was wonderful. Ate in the dining room, buffet, Ji Jis, Mongolian Wok, Pasta Bar, Guys burgers, the Burrito place, Pizza and the smokehouse. All of it was excellent. Jij Jis was our favourite and a must do. ENTERTAINMENT was very good and there was always something to do. Watched 4 shows and SoulBound and Celestrial Strings were very very good. The cruise director Mike was excellent too. Could never get in to see the comedian as the queue was always massive. Enjoyed watched the piano player Jeffery Munks and some of the others, they were all good. The sky ride was scary, the thrill theatre good (preferred level 2 than 3) and loved watching aqua man on the IMAX. As new to carnival, a few things carnival do very well over other cruise lines - Disembarkation - they keep it simple, express check out or early or late. Easy and effective. Loved that the entertainment schedule is published in advance so you can plan your week. The many different fab food options which meant areas like the buffet were mainly quiet. The app you use on board was very effective. We could be enjoying a drink then go on the app, request a dinner table and ten minutes later they would let us know through the app , that our table was ready, so easy. There was only one thing that i didn’t like about carnival and that was the lack of hand washing. No one ensured people washed their hands at the buffet and we watched most people not bother. Not good. But apart from that, we had a blast and loved carnival and the horizon Read Less

Everyone was wonderfully friendly. As a first-time cruiser I really didn't know what to expect and was open to anything. We were a party of 5, (mom, dad, 2 kids ages 7 and almost 3 and Nana in tow). All first-timers! The food was very good and plentiful with many choices. For breakfast Lido marketplace was the place to be; omelettes, Eggs Benedict, scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, bacon. Anything you could think of - cereals, fruit, danishes it was all there, and I sure do miss it!! Their midnight buffet had three selections, my favorite being the grilled ham and cheese sandwiches . They were awesome for late-night munching. If you're looking for BBQ the Pig and Anchor is YUMMY, go on "at sea" day for lunch at no cost. One thing, the beverage pack doesn't seem cost effective and if you're a Pepsi person you might do better bringing your own. So much entertainment and found many things of interest but always seemed to gravitate towards Lido deck aft to meet new friends, chat and laugh. Very kid friendly- waterworks, build a bear and Camp Ocean was great for them while we adults took a little time for ourselves. Shore excursions we booked lived up to expectations except one. My Sea Trek excursion was cancelled last sec, literally, because of compressor malfunction. But better still on dry land instead of underwater at the time. This is the only reason I gave 3 stars for excursions. Was offered any remaining excursions for 35% off which was appreciated but sadly I panic trying to snorkel. Overall the GREATEST vacation I've ever had!! Bucket list- Cruise Caribbean check! Read Less

i chose this cruise in order to be on the newest carnival ship, i enjoyed all the new amenities on this ship, was however dissappointed in some things. the one thing i was really looking forward to was the sky course which was unfortunately under maintenaice for our whole cruise , this was one of the reason we chose this ship., this was very disaapointing ,i also feel like the dinner menu is getting pretty bad, this was my 8th cruise and i use to dress up and go to dinner each night but for this cruise and my last one , i have skipped dinner several nights because the menu was not good at all, you can get the same stuff at the open service on lido, menu needs to be revamped, my last complaint is the hold carnival places on your account on the day of embarkation, it is probably written some where when you book your cruise but it needs to be high lighted or place in big bold letters so you are aware, this caused lots of confusion and my daughter account to be locked to futher charging ability beccause we were unaware of this. thanks to Talum, customer service manager for helping us out.good things were , we had a great cruise director, so much energy and fun, the carnival app is great, down load it to your phone and you can get all the info you need, everything, also the tv in your room has all your account information, you can view your pictures, this great !!!!!!!good job carnival, overall i had a great time and wonderful memories Read Less

This is a review of the six-night Western Caribbean itinerary. We are a middle-aged couple who have traveled extensively and have been on seven cruises including three on Carnival. Embarkation in Miami was a breeze as you no longer have to stand in line if you check in online and use a credit card. The sail and sign card is at your cabin door. The ship: Being new the ship was clean and in good shape. The atrium was small and unimpressive. The elevators system was hit or miss. Sometimes it worked great and other times it was down or assigned too many people to a car. The problem with the system is that when a person selects a deck number it does not know if they are alone or with ten family members. The casino was large but stank of smoke. The main pool deck had no whirlpools. It was hard to find an empty place on the Serenity Deck at times and there was no shade. My favorite place was the Lanai on deck five which is shady and quiet. Shopping: You can buy a fancy watch but there was no place to buy over the counter medications, sunscreen, candy bars, magazines, toothbrushes, Dramamine, diapers, etc. What were they thinking? Service: Our cabin steward kept our cabin clean and remembered our names. The buffet attendants whisked away dirty dishes amazingly fast. We did not eat dinner in the dining rooms so I can’t comment on waiter service and we don’t drink so we did not use any bars. We never received a final bill under our door so we had to request one via the internet. Instead of crediting us $100 for our gift card they credited $10! We had to fax them a form to fix it. Food: Since we were not feeling well and did not bring formal clothes we never ate dinner in the main dining rooms. The food at the buffet ranged from unedible too average. There were only about ten foods to choose from plus the salad bar. Cakes were dry. I remember huge buffets with multiple stations on past cruises. The deli was ridiculously small and understaffed so the lines were always long. Guy’s Pig and Anchor was OK as was the Mexican restaurant near the pool. There is a limited breakfast service in the Ocean Plaza that is quiet and not crowded. There are few free options for dinner if you don’t feel up to the main dining room. Why can’t they offer a Ruby Tuesday quality restaurant that is free? Surely this would be cheaper than a three course meal in one of the dining rooms. Entertainment: There are many options for entertainment although there is too much trivia. The Liquid Lounge performers were good although the sight lines in the theatre are terrible. I never had a problem getting a seat. Unlike other cruises I have been on there were no live bands in the pool area playing reggae, steel drum or calypso music. The SkyRide was still down. They should dismantle the whole thing. Noise: The main pool had very loud, almost painful, music at times. There was also loud music in the atrium. We could hear people talking outside our cabin, kids running down the hall late at night, doors slamming, people above us opening their balcony doors and moving furniture and when the ship was moving fast, waves hitting the side. Also a couple of times there were announcements in the middle of the night. Water shuttle (tendering): You don’t need tickets for the water shuttles in Grand Cayman and the cruise director will say that nobody waits for more than 12 minutes but what they don’t tell you is that you may sit on the rocking water shuttle for up to 30 minutes while it loads. They hold over 300 people which is why they take forever to fill. If you have a private excursion reserved allow at least an hour to get to land and find your tour company. Fellow passengers: There were over 600 kids on board which seemed like a lot for a school week. Most people seemed lower to middle class and spanned the age spectrum. Don’t worry about looking chunky in your bathing suit at the pool as there is fair number of people of size on board. Read Less

We've been on 15+ cruises over the years and go between CCL and RCL. The Horizon was by far, the most dissapointing ship out of all of them. The pros and cons: PRO: More seating in the public and buffet area. Never had to look for a seat to relax or eat. Guy's burger's Casino (small) but good lay out Every area was always cleaned up and tidy. Our cabin service was excellent. The FASTEST and easiest I've ever been on and off a ship in my life. CONS: NO elegance to the ship at all. No large atrium. They made more room for staterooms and people, and condensed everywhere else. Lines were way too long for comedy show, etc. Made you want to give up on even going to shows. Dining room had low ceilings. I miss the double floor open air. No elegance. We skipped dinner twice due to this. Our service was horrible. Most of the same food was at the buffet, which is a good thing, I guess. **TIP: use the Purell before and AFTER using the serving utensils at the buffet. The Promenade deck had less bars/shopping/seating and had too many PAY restaurants. Booked a Spa interior on the 11th floor. Very small and NO storage. Do not book! My husband lived out of his suitcase that was on top of the desk, and my suitcase was at the end of the bed that I had to walk around going in and out of bed. Drawers and safe are in the closet. The spa was smaller than my living room. Walked in, walked out and asked the receptionist if that was it, and walked back out never to return. Total waste of money to book a Spa room. Service at the pool bars (I know beyond busy) was slow and they were overwhelmed. Only one friendly bartender the entire week. Drink service in the casino was not to be found the first few days, then they wouldn't leave you alone the last 2 nights. Went to guest services for a request, and he just blank stared at me the entire time I was speaking. Needless to say, I will not be booking a cruise on The Horizon or it's sister ship,The Vista. I have never had a check in process go so smooth and quick. Literally, from terminal drop off to on the ship was less than 30 minutes. We didn't have "Faster to the Fun" and we are not Gold, Diamond, Platinum or Elite cruisers. In 30 minutes we were having a burger and fries at Guy's on the lido deck. Amazing. The disembarkment took more time, but it ran seamlessly with little waiting in any line. The Carnival Horizon flagship had a guest population of around 4,600 according to Mike the cruise director. I was concerned with the amount of people and limited space. I've read many reviews and usually start with the worse reviews. My main concern was I'd be spending most of the time in a line of some sort. This proved not to be the case. I would have never guessed there were so many guests. I have cruised on Carnival before and it wasn't any worse than other cruises and in some cases I'd say it was better. The only big issue was the sail away party. Most of the ship was on the lido deck all wanting drinks. The wait for drinks was insane, but that was the only time. I would recommend getting to the lido early on departure to get a seat at one of the bars if that's your bag. My wife and I had the endless bubbles plan (soda) and it was worth it. The food was typical. I wish the Blue Iguana Cantina was open for more than breakfast and lunch. We tried Guys Pig and Anchor. I had the prime rib and my wife had the baby back ribs 1/2 rack. Both were excellent. I also had the nachos which were just ok. It costs extra to eat there, but the cost was very reasonable for the quality of food. It seemed any of the food venues that cost extra were worth the added cost for the most part. At the Seafood Shack, which also costs extra, the clam strips and fried shrimp were excellent while the lobster roll was flat tasting. As usual the deli and pizza were nice options at no charge. Guy's Burger was a staple and the buffet was also good. Again lines were not a problem and I'm not sure why. On sea days everyone has to eat. We saw both comedians and they were excellent. The PG shows were just as funny as the R shows. The last night of the cruise they had both comedians do a special late show in the Liquid Lounge which was great. There is so much to do and see on this ship we didn't get to some of it. It gives us something to look forward to on the next trip. I liked the smart elevators. They were easy to use and efficient once we learned how to use them. Read Less

This ship was beautiful, very clean, modern and the food was great! We had not vacationed in 2 years and wanted to cruise. We wanted a super fun time so we picked carnival. We got what we asked for. Lots of fun. The deck parties, adult Quest game, Love and Marriage game, club. The staff was very nice and the dining staff in the Merridan was incredible. They interacted with the guest and went out of their way to make sure that u had what u needed. We had so much fun on the Carnival Horizon that we go home and booked another cruise on that same ship. The only disappointment was the the sky ride bikes were not working the entire cruise. They sent out a notice saying mechanical problems and weather. I think everyone should have been given some type of ship credit for the inconvenience as I'm sure that was a lot of people reason for picking the ship. Everyone in the cabin should not be forced to get the drink package if u do not drink. The Broadway shows should start earlier on Eligant night to give people a real chance for a dinner and movie. The late dinner people will miss it every time or have to leave mid show to make it to dinner. Over all...a fantastic time! Read Less
