This was a cruise for my sister's retirement celebration. Unfortunately we had a serious illness in my family just prior to leaving and my husband stayed at home. Carnival was horrible to deal with. Guest Services were of no help - they couldn't resolve anything. Carnival arbitrarily cancelled shore excursions, added restaurant reservations (some all on the same night and time) and then wiped out my credit card so we didn't have charging privileges. Each time I figured out they had screwed up something it meant a 45 min. wait in line at Guest Services. I would be told it was taken care of then I'd find out it wasn't, leading to extra charges, rebooking shore excursions and hoping I would get a refund. The standard reply was " in 7 -10 days when you get off the cruise we should refund your money to your credit card." Couldn't give me a receipt or anything. When asked what if they don't? I was told take it up with Carnival's main office. So far no refunds have appeared. Surprise. I had booked two balcony rooms and a suite. You couldn't get to the rooms until 1:30pm day of embarkation. That's normal, however this ship has nowhere to go until then. We boarded at 1pm. Not a seat or place to stand anywhere. The ship was very hot and stayed that way throughout the cruise. Everyone was complaining. My sister's room had no air conditioning so they brought her a fan and thought she'd be happy. It took day 3 before she had air conditioning in her room. Never saw anyone cleaning. Not surprised we had a family member get ill. Food in dining room was awful. Tiny portions and no flavor. Pig and Anchor was good at lunch but awful at night. Didn't have the items to make the drinks they advertised. Food was very cold and took forever. Lobster shak was awful. Food took forever and then tasted like grocery store frozen shrimp and seafood salad. I did enjoy the trivia onboard. The cruise director and staff were pleasant and fun. The steakhouse and other pay restaurants were good except for the ones mentioned above. The casino was very small and terribly smokey. This was my last Carnival cruise - the staff could care less if your problem was resolved and the entire ship was disorganized. The lack of sanitizing was troublesome. The elevator board was disgusting -it never got cleaned. Many of the handwashing stations were out of order. Read Less

My wife and I booked this cruise with my brother and his wife. We were looking forward to travelling on the newest ship in the Carnival fleet. Embarkation in Miami went smoothly and we were in our cabins in a timely manner. Overall service provided by our room steward was very good. The cabin was clean and comfortable. Our dining experiences onboard were really hit or miss. We had a couple of good meals in the dining room and more that were very mediocre. The food portions were small and service was very slow. We had to wait long periods of time between courses and to get drinks. One night we were giving our drink orders for dinner and my wife requested coffee. The waiter said " I'll get it later" We told him no she wants it now. Then he complained about having to make a pot of coffee. Unbelievable. At the end of the last formal dinner, the hostesses at the front of the dining room were shouting about the great food and service and asking everyone to rate them a 10. One woman said it was more like a 5. (Which it was) They chased her down the stairs to talk to her. Haha. This seemed to be a theme on this ship. We ate at the buffet a number of times and we had trouble finding a place to sit because there were dirty dishes that hadn't been cleared at the empty tables. In their defense, this problem seemed to lessen after the first 3-4 days. Not sure if they picked up additional crew members or what. The buffet food was ok. Nothing great. We also tried an Italian restaurant for lunch which was free. The food was mediocre with slow service. They delivered 3 of our 4 meals but not mine. I finally shared with others while they spent 20 minutes getting my lasagna. The lasagna was awful. It had bbq pork inside of it. Literally bbq sauce. Gross. Our favorite food on the ship were the Guy Fieri restaurants. Burgers, BBQ, and the mexican food. We enjoyed those. The entertainment on the ship was good. The shows were good. The bands around the ship were good. We had fun. You will also have fun with the new fangled elevators on the ship. No buttons inside so make sure you choose the correct floor before boarding. No big deal but not sure these were any faster than normal elevators. The shore excursions were fine. We enjoyed Grand Turk. We loved Curacao and Aruba. None of us cared for La Romana however. Seemed kind of sketchy with a police escort on our tour through town. We would have preferred to skip that stop and do an overnight in Curacao or Aruba so that we could spend more time there.. Debarkation was a mess. I think this may be a Miami port problem but it took forever to get off of the ship. Carnival arranged our transportation to the airport and the driver dropped us off at the wrong terminal. Spent awhile trying to get to the correct terminal to catch our flight but we made it. After all of that, we still managed to have a lot of fun but this cruise was the worst of the 6 Carnival cruises we have taken. Hopefully they can improve the service. Read Less

Horizon was great! Our handicap room, 10205, was excellent. The room was very large, and I could use the scooter everywhere. Even though it is listed as an interior room, the room has an slightly obstructive ocean view size window, and a great view. All the staff were fantastic when dealing with handicap people... from the people helping to board, to the time we left! I was thrilled about that, as I had concerns before the cruise. The only MAJOR problem on the cruise was all the smoke in the casino!! People were having to leave the area allot just to get a breath of fresh air! I had a bad cough after 3 days, and it took me over a week and a half after the cruise to clear up. Other than that, great cruise! The food in the buffet was just okay, definitely not allot of write home about. The specialty restaurants were great!! Read Less

I chose this cruise as the best entertainment option for my family. My kids are 12 and 3 years old, and our last cruise proved to be a great way to entertain them both. Carnival seemed to be a great option for more kids attractions so we have it a try. It was a disaster from the moment we walked on the ship. We entered on the 3rd floor/atrium, which felt tiny as the crowds of people flooded through the doors. At this point, and throughout the rest of the cruise, the silence of the staff was infuriating. They have this way of just allowing you to be lost and confused...they don’t anticipate needs, address questions clearly, provide clarity or direction...instead they seemed just as lost and confused as everyone else. You have to ask questions, no one will use cues to proactively address your needs. The hours of the attractions were confusing and inconsistent. Some days the teen room was 24 hours and others it didn’t open til 7 pm. Some days there were 4 buffets open in Lido, other days there were one. The layout of the common areas is impractical and there was constant congestion in the halls, elevators, and pool decks. Elevator wait times were also incredibly long - there were several times we just carried our toddler’s stroller up and down the stairs so we could move on with our day. For days I attempted to take my daughter to the toddler pool in the Dr. Seuss area on deck 12, and each time there were adults laying in the ankle deep water just sunbathing. Granted, the resort pool was always so crowded that they probably just wanted some space to refresh, but there was no regulation of the space to ensure kids had a designated space to play. This caused a chaotic spillover of children in adult spaces (and vice versa) so there was just no peace. The main dining room food was disgusting, either fried completely dry by heating lamps or just bland and underwhelming. The serving utensils were left under the lights and were usually so hot that you needed to wrap a napkin around the handle to use them. Food layout wasn’t thoughtful, and again no direction when it came to the lines at the buffet so there were long periods of congestion and confusion from people who entered at the wrong end or that didn’t know the selection was the same on both sides. It was usually other passengers that ended up explaining it and organizing the line, while staff looked on silently. At the other included outlets the lines were long and staff was passive and unfriendly. We patronized Meridian restaurant and were greeted by confused hostesses that didn’t know If they wanted you to wait in line, sit, or come back later - even with a confirmed table from MyTime Dining checkin. Wait staff in Meridian we’re not thoughtful, ignoring our feedback to make corny jokes - clearly a taught tactic. It was impersonal and insincere and an infuriating disregard for our experience. There were rules listed but not enforced, like dripping wet bikini-clad cruisers in the dining spaces contrary to signage, or rows of seats saved during the deck movie. There was no curfew for minors - all night, children could be found wandering through the casino and pool decks. Security had no control at all, and cleaning staff ignored them as they ran by and disrupted other passengers. Not one person said “no running” or asked where their guardians were...and many of these kids looked as young as 9 or 10. These kids also wrecked the self service ice cream spaces, leaving it on the counters and all over the floor, and staff were not attentive to the mess. On the promenade it was like walking through a flea market - every 5 steps someone is shoving items in your face trying to persuade you to buy another useless thing. Perfume, jewelry, shot glasses, scarves....everything. It was irritating and invasive. At the ports, loudspeaker announcements directed passengers to level 0 to disembark; when the elevator doors opened, another silent staff member standing there waiting for you to ASK if you should go left or right (there was no signage, and clearly multiple exits). Another lost opportunity to anticipate a common need and streamline my guest experience. The beds were rock hard, so much so that my kids even complained of back and shoulder pain. The shower drain didn’t work the first 2 days and my bathroom flooded constantly. It wasn’t fixed until I waited out my room attendant to ask her about it - who until then I had never physically seen. She admitted to noticing the pile of wet towels the prior day, but obviously never cleaned the shower or bothered to follow up on the flooding. My room attendant also accidentally tossed out my toddlers binkie while cleaning and didn’t admit it until I asked about it (after tearing the room apart). I was left with an inconsolable kid in an uncomfortable bed, every night for the rest of the trip. She also left the dirty cups and dishes in the room every time. If you are the type of traveler with any level of service expectations, this isn’t your ship. This ship is for low expectations, and people who are ok with paying $4K to still be left to find and figure things out yourself. NEVER AGAIN, Carnival! Read Less

We just got back from 6 nights on the Horizon. Had a great time and would sail this ship again. We were a family of 4 sailing at the same time as several other families from our neighborhood. My family stayed at Sunny Isles Residence Inn and loved the pool and room. Price was more reasonable than anything closer to South Beach. Left for port around 9:30 AM and we were in the priority line by 10:00. We only had to wait about 5 minutes to get into the building. They began boarding the ship around 11am and we went straight to our cabins since we had Faster to Fun. We had Havana cabins 5209 and 5211. We had a cabana and our 13 and 16 yo had an interior. Our steward was efficient but I barely saw him. Our luggage didn’t arrive until after muster even with priority. Therefore plan accordingly and bring a carryon with a swim suit and change of clothes. We loved the Havana area but since our kids were mostly upstairs on decks 10 and 12. we didn’t use it as much as we thought. I did love the easy access of our location to the back stairs and everything on deck 5 including breakfast in Ocean Plaza and Coffee at Java Blue. We also loved having elevators and stairs nearby. We had early dining for our group of 17. Servers were good. Food was hit or miss. I had great short ribs but my friends was dry and crusty. Same with the prime rib. Best meal for me was taking advantage of the steakhouse selection and getting the filet and lobster. That and the teppayaki were worth the extra money. I also loved the pizza and I am disappointed they are switching to Papa Johns. I don’t even get that at home! My husband tried the Mongolian wok and hated it. He also had Sushi with my daughter and liked it. I tried guys burger and didn’t like it as much as last year on Glory. We only ate at the buffet 1 time and that was the late day in Cozumel. It was okay but nothing special. Kids did the ropes course and sky ride. They enjoyed the dive in movies but didn’t try the IMAX. Might be because the movies weren’t something they would want to see. My daughter said the waterslide was okay but gave her a wedgie. My son went to club O2 a lot and made a lot of good friends. He even went to Sea day brunch with a group of 16. Except for a couple of comedy shows we mostly went to the casino after dinner. Nice pit bosses but some of the dealers weren’t super friendly but most okay. I lost overall but that’s just bad luck or choice of seat! Overall it was s great week. Read Less

Spring break cruise with family (wife, married daughter and three grand-kids (8 - 18)). This was our 23rd cruise, 5th on Carnival. Not a big fan of Carnival and get much better perks on other cruise lines, but Carnival was my (daughters choice). Had high hopes for the new ship but was generally disappointed. Embarkation and debarkation were chaotic. Had an early debark number (#7; expectation of 8:30 debark), but the debark was probably the worst ever (longest; over 2-hours). Ended up taking a taxi vice the planned ship's shuttle to the airport as we were concerned about missing flights due to debark delays. Food (main dining room and buffet) was the worst on any cruise; all in our party of six agreed on this point. Always very long lines for omelette stations, with several stations closed inexplicably during peak breakfast hours. Ice cream stations always a mess. Very little emphasis on hand sanitation in dining spaces as compared to most other ships. Elevators were a disaster; long waits always. Elevator floors are entered in a system in the elevator lobby and you are assigned an elevator which will stop on that floor. People would give up and take stairs after waiting 5-minutes, thus elevators would still stop on floors no one on-board wanted, which further added to delays. Balcony cabin was average for a newer ship. Nothing special but no real complaints other than that any new ship should be designed with phone charging ports on either side of the bed. We were deck 9 under the rum bar on deck 10. Noisy in the early morning with deck chair scrapings above. Paid the price for highest Internet connectivity, but quality was still erratic and it was generally slow. Was constantly bumped off Internet thus had to frequently re-log in Internet and Carnival Hub. Cabin attendant did a good job; waitstaff tried hard but most dining room meals experienced long delays between courses. We usually had to skip dessert to make a show. Think they had too many assigned tables. Captain said there were over 4000 guests including over 1,000 children on board. As a result, all "play" areas/pools were jammed. This was our 10th cruise. 7th with carnival. For the most part, the ship was ok. They shortened the atrium to 3 floors so they could add more rooms. No more glass elevators. The funnel in the atrium is pretty cool. The elevators are a pain. Even when you get used to them, they keep trying to stick everyone in the same elevator. Oh well... Lol. What I liked..... Our room steward was great. Always prompt, friendly and fun loving. There was one issue with the room that most people complained about, but more on that after. The ship always seemed clean and well kept. The food and drinks were good. The entertainment, especially, the musicians, we're great. There were many other good points that I haven't mentioned. Ok, now what I didn't like...... First and foremost was the casino. I'm not much of a gambler. That being said, it's the smallest casino I've ever seen on a cruise ship. The worst part is that the ENTIRE casino is smoking. It stinks terrible. The worst part is that you can't walk on the 4rh floor promenade without going thru it. So even if you just showered and changed your clothes, you're either gonna stink or have to go up to the 5th floor to get around it. Doesn't sound like that big of a deal until you want to go to one of the other venues near the casino and you have to keep going up and down to get to them. If you're a smoker, you won't care. If not, you won't like it. Bad idea Carnival. The doors on the balconies should have been sliding doors not regular doors. So not only do you have to listen to people slam their room doors but also their deck doors. Gets pretty irritating after a few days. The wait staff in the dining room did a good job but seemed confused at times. I always got my food so no big deal. Just thought I'd mention it. The lido market place seems like it doesn't have that great of a selection of foods. Less than before anyways. They have part of it open from 11:30pm-1:00am. (Midnight buffet) The selection is the same 5 things every night. Boring really fast. Pizza is always there 24 hours, but that isn't as good as years prior. Like most of the ship, the Serenity is at the highest deck of the ship with no pool, just hot tubs. Stupidest thing they ever could have done. All of these new ships are adding more and more rooms. They need to add more pools so you can actually get in one on a sea day. By the time you figure that out as a first time cruise, they already have your money. Lastly, whoever designed the theater should be fired. The seating is terrible. Tons of places you can't see half the show. Small, again because they keep adding more rooms. If you have to sit next to the bar towards the back, you can forget trying to hear the shows. Between the mixers running and the drunks talking, forget it. They like to get on stage and tell you to keep the chatter down, but do nothing about it when it happens. Anyway, your definitely getting less for your money now than you did 5 years ago, but that is with every cruise line. You are getting more of one thing. That's RUDE PEOPLE. You know them. They're everywhere. The only ones that matter. You want to slap reality into them but know that you can't. Oh wait, the one thing about the room that was bad. It seems that they are re-using they're sponges or rags to much while cleaning the bathroom . Always had that sour dirty rag smell. Many complained about that.... My wife and I chose this ship because of it's itinerary. With stops in Curacao and Aruba, two islands that we had never been to before. First things first. This was my wife's 22 Cruise and her 19th on Carnival. She has been a Platinum member of Carnival Cruise Lines for many years. 1st when we asked for "Early dining"(6:00pm) we were told it was not available. We were given "Anytime Dining" which requires you to check in each and every evening. 1st night we didn't get seated until 8:15 pm which was totally unacceptable. When the waiter and his assistants took our orders, they couldn't remember our names, what we prefered to drink or anything of the sort. Our Room Steward was pretty much a ghost the whole cruise. We met him in the hallway for about 1 1/2 minutes and then never saw him again. Some days the cabin was cleaned, but many times it wasn't or done in a rush. I am a "Gold" member of Carnival. When I was issued my Sail Card, they issued me a BLUE card, (usually reserved for 1st time cruisers) which required waiting at the Customer Service Desk to get corrected. Service on this ship is HORRIBLE! You have to wait 15-20 minutes at any of the bars just to get a drink. We had purchased the "Cheers" drink package ($980.00 extra) but have to wait forever to get a freaking drink. Staff on this ship are RUDE, even to Platinum Guests. If you ask them a question, they act like you offended them by asking a question. With the problems with our dining times, and the very poor service, I felt like the $111.92 (each) for gratuities was like being mugged. When we contacted Carnival Cruise Lines about out poor vacation that we had invested almost $4000 in, they acted like they couldn't care less. My wife says that this is most likely her LAST cruise on Carnival after 24 years of cruising with this company. Do yourself a favor, pick a different ship, and preferably, a different cruise line. Carnival keeps raising their prices, and eliminating the perks for all levels of members. We are cruising again in January, on a different Cruise line. Read Less

As a preface, I have been on approx. 8 cruises, with companies Carnival, Norwegian, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean. Understanding the general quality of cruise ship food and the general cruise ship experiences, I have to say this boat is the worst I have experienced. First, the pre-booking for restaurant reservations system is awful. If you misplace your email confirming reservation, you have to wait to get on the boat to determine your actual time. I spent 45 min on hold to confirm one reservation...the short story is corporate told me that “the boat” would get back to me, which it never did. They also confirmed a reservation for the chef’s table; however, when I got on the boat, told me they had no record. When I showed them the email confirmation they told me they had no openings ( this was for my wife’s birthday by the way). They called me back later to offer me two times, both of which were the most inconvenient times based on the ship’s itinerary ( middle of being in port at Curaçao and on the formal night). The room cleaning service was the worst I have ever experienced on a cruise...by far. My wife and I are low maintenance people. We keep the do not disturb on the door most of the time. We asked to have the room cleaned twice in four days at reasonable times and the room was never cleaned. We left for 6 hrs at Curaçao and when we got back nothing had been done. This is keeping in mind that we had one of the Hanava suites, which is supposed to be one of the upgraded rooms on the ship. As a side note, don’t try to get a drink at the exclusive Havana Bar....the cruise might be over before you get your drink. The entertainment is substandard for a boat of this size. The food is awful in comparison to other cruise lines. Even though it is a “new” boat it is clear that Carnival cut corners for the bottom line. All and all, stay away from this boat and cruise line. We decided on this one simply for the ports; however, I believe people would be much better served with other options. As a final note to emphasize the misery that is this cruise, my wife and I are catching a flight from Aruba to cut the cruise short bc that is better than continuing to stay on this boat. Read Less

Outside of carnivals scope, we had a great trip. The weather was perfect for us, all the excursions were fun, and we had no issues in the ports. We booked a spa cabin for a treat (regret choice of the cabin but not the spa portion although this ship's spa does not have a T-pool just a hot tub.) Embarkation (& disembarkation) was a breeze though we also had FTTF (our luggage didn't arrive till after we came back from dinner, but we were able to get into our cabin early) We received some bon voyage gifts, and they were set up before we got into the cabin and were set up lovely. Be aware there is no pool in serenity just a 'meh' hot tub, the edges of serenity zone are next to the waterworks, so that wasn't well thought out — lots of kids noise which most people are trying to avoid by going to serenity. I did like the salad and the constant cold water they had there. But the salad didn't change and it got boring I was shocked by how so many things cost more this cruise. I felt like a captive shopper there. I haven't cruised carnival in 5 years but I hadn't seen how far they have come with all the impulse purchases. The cherry on top is huge and has an outdoor seating area. All the best looking desserts were extra (like cupcakes are hard ice cream) I found nothing interesting in the many shops they had. It was pretty disappointing. I loved the carnival app, spa thermal beds, and the blue iguana. Forget watching anything at liquid lounge unless you have an hour to be there early. I picked "poor" for dining despite great services because the food was pretty boring by the 3rd day. Even guys burgers was super thin patty now. Blue iguana still continues to be good. We liked the eat your time/way, but the tables were inches apart, so it was eating with different strangers every night instead of getting to know one set of strangers. We never waited for a table though. It was great that way. I had to mark down service as this was the worst guest service team I have ever dealt with. You are a case, and they just want to close the case rather than solving the problem. No free massage is going to make up for selling a cabin that should have a noise disclaimer on it. I actually used the spa a great deal and other than one receptionist and the acupuncturist we had great service, yes they push products but just tip them and let them know you don't want it. We never had a problem with the thermal suite parts or the warm beds. There was always one free the week we went. The only reason I had an enjoyable cruise at all was because of the company I was with, the weather, and some successful port experiences. We may need to branch out or try some all-inclusive resorts again. I cannot imagine ever going on this ship again. Read Less

This was the first cruise for our family of 5 (kids ages 12, 9, and 6), but I can tell that it won't be our last! When I booked this cruise, it was chosen based on dates that worked with our spring break, the availability of adjoining cabins in our price range, and the ship having many fun activities for kids. After reading many positive and negative reviews, I knew what to expect in terms of crowds, elevators, food options, and entertainment, so I felt prepared for issues that others have complained about and they didn't bother us. Yes, there were times when the ship felt crowded at the pool and the buffet, but it was never unmanageable, and it was expected when there were nearly 5000 people on board! There were always places to go to find some peace and quiet (the deck on level 5 was a favorite of ours). Yes, the elevators were a disaster on the day of embarkation due to people not knowing how to use them and the crew working hard to get everyone's luggage onboard. But we walked a lot of stairs over the 6 days and burned off the many servings of burgers and melting cake that we consumed :). We had 2 adjoining interior cabins forward on deck 1 and this was perfect for our family-the 3 kids slept in 1 while my husband and I had our own space in the other. I'm sure a balcony or window would have been nice, but we spent very little time in the cabin and did not miss them or feel claustrophobic. There was plenty of closet and drawer space for our family. It was great to have 2 bathrooms! We felt very little movement from the ship, and only heard noise on the final day when we docked back in Miami. Our kids ate about a hundred servings of ice cream and thought this was a dream come true! We took them to the main dining room every night-it was nice to take the time to relax during dinner, and it was a great time for them to try out new foods. My son loved the alligator fritters and calamari, and my older daughter ate meat for every meal-lamb shank, prime rib, braised short ribs! My 6yo daughter was happy eating hot dogs and hamburgers for almost every meal (ugh!), but the dining room staff was very nice about getting her raw veggies and fruit to accompany her meal. The food was overall very good-we don't eat in gourmet restaurants often, but had no complaints about the quality of the food, especially considering how many people they are cooking for! The melting cake was terrific the first night, but not as warm and "melting" on other nights, to the point where we sent it back one night, as we found it just isn't very good when it is cold. We promptly received a new melting cake without any questions asked. The crew were all exceptionally friendly and I felt like everyone we saw smiled or said hello, fellow passengers included. The activities on board did not disappoint-the water slides were fun for all of us, the ropes course was terrifying in a good way (I would recommend NOT doing this in 45mph winds unless you have no fear of heights :), the sky ride was amazing, and the mini golf course was great family fun. The pools and hot tubs were crowded with kids on sea days, but some of them were our own (and they didn't care!). My girls checked out club Ocean briefly the first day and were overwhelmed by the number of kids, so did not want to go back. This was no surprise, as all of our kids are somewhat shy and I didn't expect that they would do the kids clubs. We heard from others that their kids liked it so much that they didn't want to leave! We attended the 3 shows-Soulbound, Celestial Strings, and Vintage Pop- and thought these were fun, well done with excellent musicians, singers, and dancing- and perfect length for our family (around 35-40 min each I think). We planned our own activities in port and this worked well for our family and was more cost effective than purchasing through Carnival. I hope this review helps someone else who is thinking about a cruise on the Horizon. If you have a family with kids who are tweens or grade schoolers, I can tell you that you will have an amazing time! My kids are already bugging me to plan our next cruise... Read Less

We just returned from our Spring Break cruise on the Horizon. We wanted to try a Vista Class ship. So far, we have taken 8 cruises with Horizon. Below are the Cheers and Jeers: Cheers Had a Havana Suite. The added balcony room is a treat. The room was very quiet. Exceptional service from the room steward. Got to see the Dr. Seuss Activity in action. The children were enjoying themselves. Shows were good. The singers apparently were rehearsing and we were treated to one song in the atrium (third floor on the steps). Could have listened to them sing all day. The app is nice. We always get good service from the agents when booking by phone. More efforts toward sustainability - pencil instead of a pen, fewer paper handouts each day, straws by request. Cake Buffet had a different, delicious selection each day. Internet connectivity is much better. All you trivia cheaters will love it. Jeers We ordered the Cheers pass knowing that at best, we would break-even. Never again! Carnival has cut staff and it is especially felt in this area. Wait staff rarely come around so we had to go to the ONE bar that was open on the Lido Deck on port days. That bar was two deep so the wait was considerable. For most bars, there was only one bartender even on sea days. Think carefully about ordering the Cheers Pass if you have not been on a cruise recently. It just isn't worth it. (We tip in cash with every drink that is served to us so it is not us, it is them). Carnival needs to revamp the drink menu. Same boring drinks and them seem to be more sugary sweet. We went to Guest Services immediately upon arriving because we wanted to send a gift to someone on another ship. There was one person to handle us lowly cubic-zirconia level members. Diamond and Platinum have their own line. The person that was being helped was not accepting whatever the guest service agent was explaining. I waited for 15 minutes before I asked them to summons another agent. By now, the line had grown to the elevators. I asked the Diamond agent if she could get someone else to help. No one was in her line. "Well, I will go ahead and help you," she said sarcastically. She wasn't pleased to do so. She gave us incorrect information. We ended up calling the 800# on the Carnival website. We found ourselves at guest services twice. Both times, went away feeling like we were at the DMV. They had the warmth of a TSA agent. Main Dining Room - No, we were not able to check-in for ATD on the app. Instead, we had to go to level 5 where we were rerouted to level 3. Why can't we just go to level 3 in the first place? We ate in the MDR on first night. Food/service was good. Again, getting a drink takes awhile. On Elegant Night, we went to the MDR again. This time, we were seated in a dark corridor by the kitchen door/kitchen elevator. It was so dark that it made it difficult to read the menu. We wanted to see the show, so we asked to be seated somewhere else. The waiter spoke to someone and came back and removed the silverware from the table for the other two no-shows and left us there. We didn't return to the MDR for the rest of the cruise. While we enjoyed the Havana Suite, the patio chairs are very uncomfortable. They are low to the ground and are appropriate for a preschooler. The short lounge chair has a back that does not adjust. It is too low to look at sea or to read. Whoever purchased that chair should have to sit in it for a week. TV channels are limited. There is one news channel: CBSN which doesn't cover much. From there, TCM, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, Discovery, and a few cartoon channels. To make up from this cost-saving mistake, you get a selection of Pay Per View movie channels. Many are free but they are so bad that you cannot even watch half of it without turning it off. Liquid Lounge Layout - get to the shows early. The Horizon has more passengers but it does not have more room for the Liquid Lounge or Limelight Room. Do not select a seat with a free-standing chair close to the stage.The performers use platforms in this area which means that you will miss some of the performance. Elevators - the destination dispatch elevators increases the wait time. You have no idea where the elevator you have been assigned is at in the hoist way because there are no position indicators letting you know if the elevator is coming or is being held up at another floor. Most floors do not have TV screens showing which elevator has been summoned to which floor to allow you to get on should the door open. There is no longer a PreSale Agent on board stating staff cuts. Carnival really needs to staff this position! Part of enjoying this cruise is booking the next one while on board. Read Less

First the great. Embarkation was a breeze. We (my wife, daughter and her companion) arrived at our allotted time and we were on the ship within 10-15 minutes. It was the best embarkation experience of our 19 cruises. Great job on this! The food was also great! My wife and I were pleasantly surprised to find that this ship had such an array of dining selections and the quality of the food. The main dining room was our choice for 3 of the 8 nights, and all meals were terrific. We ate at the steakhouse twice and the Italian restaurant once, both were very good. Our daughter also ate at the Asian restaurant and loved it. For breakfast my wife and I ate in the dining all but one day and found it quiet and with wonderful service and food. The wait staff remembered our names after the first day. For lunches we experimented with Guys and the buffet. All very good. Our cabin (7305) was a Grand Suite. It was very nice. The balconies on these cabins are very narrow but still nice to have. The service from Agus was top notch. Now the not-so-great. We paid over $400 to get the Thermal Suite. If you are looking for peace and relaxation, do NOT get this. Passengers are rude, noisy, and do not care about anyone but themselves and the staff does nothing to stop it. We also got 5 spa treatments while on board. Most were very good, but the upsell effort was a little too aggressive. Finally, the worst experience we have ever had on a ship was getting off this one. We were supposed to have "expedited" privileges but it was a nightmare. We had our bags checked the night before and waited over 90 minutes to get them the next morning. We missed our flight and had to rebook at our cost. My advice, if you go on this shop and have a flight before 11:30 a.m., do not check your bags. Nobody could seem to help us...we were on our own. Everyone just shrugged their shoulders. I know this is a family ship in the "value" category, so we got what we signed up for. But we probably will not be going back to Carnival even if we are taking our daughter. It's too noisy, too much partying, and that disembarkation experience did it for us. Wanted to cruise on a newer ship. We had sailed the itinerary before. The Horizon is a very neat and clean ship, because it is new. However, I did not find it to be much different than the Carnival Dream. We stayed in a cloud spa balcony room. There were a few perks, but we didn’t feel they were worth the extra cost. We bought several spa sessions, couples massage, facial, double close shave and stone massage. Be very careful and check your bill, they double and over charged us on every service. The elevators are very difficult for most people to use. You can’t just hop on any elevator and you want. You have to enter the floor you wish to go to and then go to the assigned elevator it gives you. We spent a lot of time waiting on elevators. The buffet on Lido deck was horrible. The food choices were limited and not very good. If you have been on one carnival cruise you have been on them all. We like Carnival, but did not see any difference in this ship than some of the others. The decor was very bland and insignificant compared to other ships we have been on. This is not our first rodeo with Carnival. We keep telling ourselves that "it will get better." That is why we decided to book a spring break cruise on their newest and largest ship: the Horizon. Now we can honestly say that the bigger the ship, the worse the service and amenities get. I do have to say that with a ship of this size and about 4,500 fellow passengers, I thought we would have felt somewhat crowded, but honestly we did not. There was never an issue finding a chair by the pool, a wait for a table in the dining room, waiting for service at the bar, etc. The pools were not crowded and activities still felt intimate. The only time you realized how many people were actually sailing with you was when the deck parties happened. Carnival if known for FUN and they did not disappoint in this area. If you are unable to find something to do on a Carnival ship then you are NOT on a Carnival ship. The most memorable part of this cruise and what will probably keep making me come back to the brand is the FUN concept. Our cruise director on this sailing was Schwartz and he was AMAZING!!!! Carnival picked a winner when they brought him on board. Our room was your typical balcony stateroom. The only complaint I had with the room itself is that your key card is what turns on the power in the room. This is fine, but I was quick to realize that when I left the room, all power went out. Nothing could charge, including my phone, camera, etc. while I was gone because I took my key with me. The second complaint is that there is no power outlet next to the bed, but we made do. Ohhh... and the beds must have changed. They were not comfortable at all and you could feel the seam. I don't know if Carnival intended to skimp on the stateroom service, but they did skimp indeed. Granted, we did sleep in until 10 or 11 every day and maybe this is the reason, but our room was only serviced once a day if we were lucky. A few times, not at all. We had to call for towels and toilet paper. Also, I had to call room service for ice after 10:00pm and was charged. However, when our room WAS serviced, an outstanding job was done. Lets talk food... Your best bet is the "for fee" dining. We were only able to eat at the Italian place and the Sushi place because of availability, but neither disappointed. Actually, it was some of the best sushi I have ever had; anywhere. The Main dining room had the same outstanding service and the food was good and nothing was wrong with it, but it just wasn't memorable. I don't care for barbecue so my review of the Pig and Anchor wouldn't be a fair one. Both Guy's burgers and the Taco place are outstanding. If you are able to get a table for lunch for either Ji Ji's or the Italian place, do so. It's free. Some really great looking salads came from the Serinity pool deck for lunch too. Beware of the Lido Buffet for any meal. It is disgusting and there is no variety for any meal. What you have on day one will be what you have days two through eight. The only good item here is the made to order omelets in the morning that you have to wait a hour for because they have one crew member preparing them for 2,000 people. The pizza place is mediocre and you will stand I line here for approximately 30 minutes for 2 slices of pizza. Up to an hour after 11:00pm. Room service, although delicious, is a joke. Everything is ala carte. This can add up. Other lines charge you a flat rate which is acceptable, but Carnival has you reaching deep into your pockets if you don't wait in the hour line for those 2 slices of bland pizza. All of the shows were amazing. The even premiered a brand new show on our sailing and it was a treat. The layout of the auditorium, however, is that of a very poor design. Get there early to get a seat on the main floor, close to the stage, with no pillar. Pools were great. More whirlpools/hot tubs needed. Waterpark was a favorite with the kiddos. All other outdoor activities kept everyone busy during the day. Though my son was upset that they closed the basketball courts during dinner hours. No complaints with the kids clubs. Spa was wonderful. Shops could have carried a few more personal items and apparel. Elevators, though aggravating at first, made perfect sense after a few days. All in all it was a pretty good cruise. I think I like Carnivals smaller ships better. This big ship was, well, Forgettable in some ways. For me anyway. You may think different. Read Less

Good Eastern 8 day trip itinerary , Great ports with off setting departure times . Ship was in Great Shape and crew/staff were terrific ,warm and friendly. Dinning was ok/good with no major flaw's, main dinning was accomplish in less than an hour and a half . Buffet items were also ok and with the amount of passengers that ship ship holds, items seemed fresh and not picked over Wife and I attended 2 shows and found them good, Vintage Pop and Soulbound which was our favorite the best , interaction with the players and audience make the show even better , don't want to spoil it but get there earlier for added extra's We do have issue's with what Carnival Horizon has done with the theater and seating thou, depending on where you are seated the view from the 2nd level is limited to viewing the main level as now there are no more fixed row seating on the first level and the show has extended from the stage onto the main level area . So some of the acting is out of view with the current new design if you are seated on the 2nd level . Show last about a half hour Comedy show's where just ok as we did see all comedies that week both their PG and R rated versions . there were 4 total comedies on our cruise 4900 passengers this week with spring break and didn't find the lines terrible... 5-10 mins before a show and seating was pretty easy Up-Charge restaurants were good as usual We did Pig and anchor with live entertainment while dinning , J.J's Asian and Bonsai Teppanyaki with the chief show very funny as he prepared our meal . We also had reservation set for the Steakhouse and when they called to confirm our reservation they informed us that since it was formal night dress shorts would not be allowed but jeans were ok ? As we have always done formal night's on our previous cruises we decided to pass on this cruise and just be lazy and on vacation, we did find this to be very disappointing as we both were looking forward to the Steak house as we have dine there on several other cruises and they are normally very good and worth the charge and did have jeans also but as they made it an unannounced stipulation to dine prior to our reservation made 6 months earlier that just annoyed us as we were the patrons paying additional for this restaurant . so a tip , make sure that its not a formal night when you make your reservation, as this was the first time we encounter an issue if your not planning on bring formal wear. Casinos seem to be paying with several witnessed good jack pot pay outs also speaking with several people thru out the cruise said the tables were friendly also . So go have a great time if your planning a Horizon trip and don't let the small stuff bother you, as we found on this trip there weren't many at all !!! Good Sailing ! Read Less

The parking garage for our terminal was full and we arrived at 11:30 am .we had to drive to another garage and finally found a spot on the very top deck, 3of the 4 elevators were broke . I can’t image the frustration for those arriving later or those who were older folks with difficulties walking stairs and having to carry there luggage . I have sailed on many different cruise lines and this was a complete disappointment. Giving this a mid rating. The ship was pretty, the beds were comfortable. We stayed in a balcony room and it was so loud with all the ignorant people who opened and slammed there balacony and room doors all hours of the night . We complained nightly to the manager and heard from multiple people on the ship it was continuous on every floor. The only food that was good was the BBQ from pig and Anchor & Burgers from Guys Burger joint. However these were only open for specific times . The buffet food and dining room food was gross. Even the Deserts were gross except for the soft serve ice cream. I was also extremely disappointed in the wait staff on the ship , I have never seen such minimal wait staff across a cruise ship to assist with drinks . There was only 2 bartenders per bar, and 2 on the deck . I asked the waitress after standing in line for 30 minutes at the bar if she could get me a drink , The deck waitress refused to get us drinks bc we weren’t sitting in a chair , however after 45 minutes waiting in a chair they still didn’t make it over to take our drink order. When you have 3900+ people on a ship you would think they would allocate more to wait staff. We had to wait in line at the bar for 30-45 minutes to get a drink and they only serve you 1 at a time, which was frustrating due to the wait time to even get a drink. This didn’t matter if you were getting a soda or a alcoholic drink. The plus side was embarkation and debarment, smooth and quick less than 10minutes . The 2 comedians who performed were actually funny. We had 5 kids and The kids were disappointed in the camps and refused to go back. There was minimal entertainment. I won’t get back on a Carnival ship again. I saved for 2 years to bring my family on a cruise that cost over $5K and everyone was disappointed. Read Less

Just returned from a 6 Day Western Caribbean on the Horizon. Everthing from the ship to the service was top shelf. Not a fault of Carnival, the Port of Miami is a mess. There is no communication of closed parking lots and updates. We had to park at Garage G for our ship which was close to 1/2 mile away. Could not find a shuttle to the terminal so we walked. Glad the luggage had wheels. The path was not direct and not pedestrian friendly. Embarkation was easy and the rest of the cruise was wonderful. Stateroom clean, food delicious and the staff was friendly and out going. Only negative of the ship was the smoke in the casino coming out into adjoining public areas of the ship. Not much Carnival could do so we avoided the areas. Waterworks was fun for all. Did not do the specialty dining and we thought the MDR was 5 stars. Debarkation was ok with some snags in the line once in the terminal but we survived!!! Cannot wait for our next trip..... Read Less

We chose the Horizon for the itinerary since we had not traveled to these ports- Grand Turk, La Romana, Curacao and Aruba. Each port had it's own special things- Grand Turk, the beach, Jack's Shack and Margaritaville, La Romana, the diverse souvenirs you could get there and the friendliness of the people, Curacao with its beautiful buildings and architecture. Also the good local beer and the wonderful gouda cheese., finally Aruba with its wonderful Catamaran sail. The great views, rum punch, music and people. Now we get to the ship. It was beautiful! The restaurants were wonderful, especially the Steakhouse. I Can't say enough about the bars and he service. Our cruise director, Schwartz was beyond wonderful, such energy! We went nightly to the Havana Bar for the music and dancing. The comedians were fabulous and the shows- WOW! Especially Amor Cubano. Strongly recommend Carnival and especially Horizon- Bravo to the staff! Read Less

This was a six day cruise for me and a friend (two seniors). I have been on five other Carnival cruises and over 22 on other cruise lines. We left on March 2nd and stayed overnight at the Best Western Premier since we flew in from Nova Scotia. We arrived at the ship at the allotted time of 12:30 and were able to breeze through security and directly onto the ship. We had an aft Havana balcony cabin (# 8474). I would definitely recommend the Havana area as it is private all day until 7 PM at night. There is a small pool and two hot tubs and it is adults only. The cabin was very nice with a tropical colour scheme of turquoises and oranges. Three closets: two with hangers and one with shelves and a safe. There were also two small drawers in each bedside table. The bathroom had no storage area and only six glass shelves to store items. It was a very small bathroom and the shower had a curtain and not a glass door. The water temperature in the shower was not very consistent. It was nice and hot on a couple of days but the rest of the time it was only warm no matter how high you turned the thermostat. The elevators. I have never had to discuss elevators before but the ones on this ship are the newest innovation in modern technology and will take some getting used to. There are NO buttons inside the elevator itself. There are small computer screens outside the elevator banks and you have to touch them to have them list the various floors on the ship. You touch the one you wish to go to and the screen will list a “letter” (A – Z). Each elevator is labelled with a letter above it and that is the elevator you are expected to take. At the main elevator banks there is a larger computer screen that shows which elevators are going to which floors. A very unique experience but works very well once you get used to it. FOOD: I was not very impressed with the food choices in the buffet and found that a lot of the selections were covered with sauces. We did not go hungry since the burgers at Guy’s Burger Joint were amazing and we had a lot of salads. We did eat at the Pig and Anchor once and had an excellent prime rib meal with all the trimmings for only $10.00. We ate in the main dining room only once and it was disappointing. The prime rib was thin and tasteless and the chocolate melting cake was only lukewarm so not very appetizing at all. I have had the chocolate melting cake on all of the Carnival ships and it is usually HOT and wonderful. ENTERTAINMENT: This was disappointing. This ship does not have a “theater” with stadium seating like most ships. It now has the Liquid LOUNGE which is used as a lounge with a bar and dance floor when they do not have a production show for the passengers. The main level of the “lounge” has movable upholstered chairs and some small tables. If you are sitting in most areas your view is going to be partially blocked by people sitting in front of you. There is a balcony which is tiered and I would recommend that over the main floor. One of the featured singer/dancers was injured so the show was modified and was only four singers sitting on stools and taking turns singing and three violinists (who were very good). The second show was a production number but again you could not see all of the players from our vantage point. The other BIG problem is the sound!!! I am a senior and do not have any hearing problems but I always wearing earplugs to the shows. Even when using those in my ears there were times during the performance that the loudness actually gave me pain! I have no idea why this is allowed as it is actually damaging to your hearing especially when the shows are over 30 minutes long. There is really no need at all to have the music and singing amplified to this level. CASINO: This can be summed up easily…SMOKE FILLED. We could not stay any longer than about 10 minutes because of the heavy cigarette smoke everywhere. As far as I could tell there were no areas where smoking was not allowed inside the casino. They will be losing a lot of business because people will not go there. ACTIVITIES AND STAFF: We used the mini-golf and tried the sky cycles which were great fun. It is not so crowded on port days. The staff were excellent everywhere on the ship; friendly and helpful. PORTS OF CALL: We did not take any excursions as we normally book our own and in Jamaica all the resorts we wanted to book were at least a 30 minute bus ride from the ship. The resort we planned to book in Grand Cayman was not available and we didn’t bother taking a tender into the port just to shop. There was no use trying to do anything in Cozumel as we were one of the late arriving ships at 10:00 AM and there were SIX other cruise ships in port before us. It seems the cruise lines are seriously messing with their timetables and it is making it hard to plan any private excursions plus it is too crowded with that many people. Overall we enjoyed the cruise but that was mainly because we mostly just used the pools and relaxed around the ship. I would not go on this ship again because of the smoke in the casino, the poor food choices and the fact that they no longer have a normal theater for their shows. NCL has the right idea with their new ships since they now have a separate and enclosed casino just for smokers! Carnival could take a lesson from them. Read Less

Day 2: went to deck and placed towels on chairs while I took kids to the obstacle course on the next deck up and then down to the pool. Came back 30-40min later to a ticket stating the towels sat for too long unattended and I can find my belongings in a bag at the towel bar. At this time all the chairs in the sun were taken front, sides and back of the ship filled. The only spot available was in the shade with an obstructed view of the ocean. Day 2: night we placed our kids in camp ocean ages 7 and 8. Kids were super excited to go due to prior camp ocean experiences on other ships. We picked our kids up two hours later to 2 of 3 crying saying they never want to go back. They hated it, no games and/or arts and crafts. They made kids participate in scheduled activities. They did not provide alternative options. My daughter wanted to color instead of playing in their olympics and they told her no. They have a terrible child to teacher ratio. At one time I counted 28 kids to 3 adults. Sea day brunch and dinning took over an hour to get our food. Comedy shows were sold out every night. People started to line up an hour before hand. Terrible seating options. Seats are individual chair-no booths so there is limited seating. We chose Carnival for our first cruise and boy did they not disappoint us!!! We had the most amazing time and can't wait to book our next cruise. Everything from the staff, food, excursions, cleanliness of the ship and cruise director (Schwartz) were AMAZING!!! We had the most amazing cabin steward (Wai), she took care of our every need and remembered our first names from the very start of the cruise, which was very impressive!!! We swam with the sting rays in Grand Cayman and snorkeled in Cozumel. The only thing we would suggest is in Jamaica, book an excursion, the locals are very pushy and we could have done without that. Overall we had an excellent experience and will definitely be sailing with Carnival again. We did go to the comedy show and it didn't disappoint, I haven't laughed so hard in a very long time. We also played bingo, went to the casino, and ate at a couple of the specialty restaurants that were amazing. We are still talking about Guys Burgers and can't wait til our next cruise. Read Less

I have been on many cruises more than 10. I have also been on many Carnival Ships. I thought because this was a brand new ship we couldn't go wrong. That was not the case. The biggest problem with this ship is there are so many cabins for the almost 4000 people that theres not much left for entertainment. The food in my opinion was terrible. We ate in the dining room as well as the buffet and I was completely disappointed with the food. It was less than mediocre. I waited appox 25 minutes at times for a drink. They have taken all the fun entertainment away. No more Vegas style shows, no more beautiful glass elevators. No more elegant dining unless your willing to pay $95.00 a person in they're steak restaurant. They have replaced the entertainment with passenger cabins. Small pools, NO ENTERTAINMENT HORRIBLE FOOD. Everything was perfect! We loved this boat. Our Stewart Ian was fantastic. We stayed on the Havana deck (5). It was so nice we never explored the rest of the boat! It was so worth the extra money. Carnival has changed the way they clean the your state room. If used to be twice a day, now it is only once. Your Stewart will ask which do you prefer morning or evening. The downside was not having fresh towels for that second shower of the day. It wasn’t that big of deal. If I had to pick one thing I wished it was done differently it would be the siding doors had a key pad or an exit to go directly to the pool. As it is now you have to lock your sliding door from the inside and walk through the bar to get to the pool if you want your room locked. It wasn’t a well thought out plan in my opinion. I chose this cruise because I like the new larger ships. It was also easier for my bother to fly into the area from Sweden. We traveled with 5 sibs and spouses, also my sisters oldest son and 3 of his kids. Loved the ship, but missed the awesome spa we are used to from the Breeze and Dream. They did away with that great thalasso pool! I sure did miss that! Another disappointment was the new lounge. They changes from those old school large seating areas with tables to basically folding chairs on the ground level, other seats were very hard to see anything. The dinning seamed to be better then past Carnival cruises, including the main dining room. We stayed in a spa balcony cabin, nothing changed here, still a nice room, but seams like they could work on giving the cabins a fresher look. Our steward was fine, not much interaction like on other ships. Did a great large group excursion in Cozumel, Private Oasis At Passion Island! It was $739 for up to 12 people. They treated us like Platinum VIP guests, food, drink and our own private area of beach away from others on the island. Check it out, it must be catching on, because the price just went up to $799. Para sailed in Grand Cayman, also fun, we always book with the Carnival website. Both embarkation and disembarkation went very smooth, We are Platinum sailors, but the others in our group were not, and we all managed to get on ship the same time. Read Less
