So I fly about 3 weeks a month. Hate United because the seats are tiny, service sucks and there's mechanical issues regularly. After this, I have concluded Carnival is the United of cruise lines (last I checked, United had the lowest customer satisfaction for Airlines.) Let's be frank, I was lazy because I did not want to get on a plane and NYC worked. Decided to TAKE A RISK and try Carnival. After all, Horizon was a brand new ship. I assumed incorrectly it would be better because of the huge investment Carnival made. They want people coming back. Here's the rundown (if you have time to read): Ship: This was a social experiment. Built to float as many people in a tiny space as possible. Common areas are VERY crowded. You'll need to really manuever to get a meal, lounge chair, elevator or anything else for that matter. If mass herds of people are your thing- I recommend going on this cruise. Oh and make sure you can dodge motorized scooters. For some reason there are quite a few of them everywhere on the ship. (I feel for these folks- but found quite a few of them got aggressive and seemed to forget there was foot traffic.) Cabin: Splurged on a spa floor suite. Based on other cruises I thought I might actually have a decent balcony (NOPE) TINY and only fit two small chairs. Strike one. Strike two- promises of all access to the SPA floor only to find out you can buy access to the thermal spas and those two were over crowded and not worth it. Brand new ship- shower doors kept coming off the track. Made showering a challenge. Only benefit I saw to the cabin was the priority embarkation. That at least was painless. But would not do this again. Better off getting a balcony room and paying thousands less. Dining: Lido Deck- Line up with the herd and get ready to fight for overcooked (at best) Dorm food. Good luck finding anything remotely healthy. Even the fruit is generally canned or not ripe. You could not find a berry of any type here- only in the bars so we ate our fruit there. Did "Anytime Dining". PLAN to wait quite a while at peak times to be seated and fed. Husband also got FOOD POISONING off the steak he paid $20 EXTRA for. In bed for 1.5 days. We know it was the steak because several others I spoke to had a similar issue. Reported this to the customer serivice rep on Deck 3- she gave me SERIOUS ATTITUDE. Stated he needed to go to the infirmary. I told her "I didn't know there was a protocol for food poisoning- especially when you cannot step 5 feet away from your bathroom!" They said the matre 'de would contact us. He didn't until we dared to venture back into the dining room. Appologized and offered a drink. (Who wants to drink after days of being sick?); Tried to escape the herd again and went to breakfast in the formal dining room. Took over 25 minutes to place a simple order. Left angry and hungry after over an hour of waiting because I had to get to a spa appointment (More on that debacle in a bit) SPECIALTY RESTAURANTS: So in the spirit of nickel and diming (common practice here) they do offer, for an extra charge, specialty dining options. You'll need reservations for most of these. I suggest you make them early or you'll be eating at 9pm. Steakhouse was very good. Went back twice because frankly the main dining room was mediocre at best. Pig and Anchor- Not bad at all and pretty easy to get in and out of. Price was reasonable for the food quality and quantity. Good option if you want to avoid crowds too. Sushi- Was good and a break from the other options. Seafood shack- crab sliders were good as well as the shrimp by the pound. Clam chowder- just OK. The rest was heavily fried if you lilke that kind of thing. Asian restaurant- Went there for lunch (which was "complementary" at no extra charge. You check off what you want and they give you a bowl full of noodles and "whatever". Tasteless and took well over an hour of waiting to eat. Not worth it, but in fairness we didn't try dinner for the extra charge. Other options: Pizza (24 hour). Not bad but don't expect NY style. It was kind of dry but I was craving something hot and made right then and there (not hours before). Probably worth the wait in line. Guy's Burger Joint: Good burger and it was warm. Didn't try the deli but looked like it had to be good given the long lines every day in the lido deck. Mexican place had decent breakfast burritos, but they were a little bit cold (again due to the fact they have to feed a very large crowd- hard to do this well) Bars: HIGHLIGHT of our trip- ALCHEMY bar. The best possible drinks on the trip. Every bartender was super fun, attentive, took great care in their craft AND wanting you happy. Ended up there most nights. If you go- highly recommended. Piano Bar- Eden's show was so much fun. He's extremely talented and humorous. Crowd was engaged every night we were there. Entertainment and Activities: Lots to do here, however you'll be waiting around for a lot of it just due to the volume of people. Some things that were fun: Karaoke (if it's your thing). Only complaint- this was really popular and most days they did it in the Havana bar which was way to small for the crowd that was in there. More fighting for seats. Piano bar mentioned above was also fun. Serenity deck- 21+ to go up there (not always enforced). A nice place to escape for some adult time as there were 5000 guests, 1800 were children. Also most days they had a nice salad bar around lunch time. RARE find on this ship. However, by the end of the trip most adults had found it and you're fighting again for seats. SPA: Had a good first round experience so the hubs scheduled two appointments for our last day. 12pm and 1:30pm. After not being fed in the dining room (see comments earlier) and racing to my 12pm appointment- Got checked in at the front desk. Waited by the "holding area" for 25 minutes.. All the 12pm people seemed to be picked up. My lady from the first massage came I and I thought she was picking me up late for my appointment. I looked up for a second- she's gone. Went to front desk to ask the same woman that checked me in, who was doing my service? She stated my appointment had been cancelled. "Really- because you checked me in 25 minutes ago..." She told my my husband must have cancelled it... I got upset, (I was hangry at this point and so annoyed!) Told them to cancel his appointement at 1:30. she wanted to charge us half because it was less than 24 hours according to "policy". I stated then they should be charging for the other one we didn't cancel too which they claimed happened at 7:30AM. We were in bed at the time. Had to make a scene to get her to waive the charges (Which I'm not a fan of doing...) Another note- Many of the "entertainment seminar" options they offer are designed to sell you something. Annoying... Service: OK, some bright spots here. The vast majority of the staff is gracious and wants to make your trip amazing. These folks work SO hard, 14 hours a day in many cases and do it with a smile. They deserve KUDOS. Only exception (ironically) is the customer service person at guest services and the spa check in person. You would think they would be better as that's their only job. Ports and Excursions: WHAT EXCURSION????? The only one we planned was in Dominican Republic and guess what- they cancelled it. BRAND NEW SHIP and they somehow could not get the mechanics to work to get us into port. They had to cancel the port and gave us a whole $50 credit per person. We did get our shore excursion money back because we booked with Carnival ahead of time so word of warning, book through your cruise line as this stuff does happen. Grand Turk- never got off the ship. Looked like a seaweed-fest at the beach though. PR- we had fun wandering around old town, had a great meal at a local restaurant and only paid $14 to walk around the fort. Would go back there for sure but unlikely to do it in a cruise ship again. VALUE: Not seeing it at all. Paid way too much for a suite that was just OK with little benefit. Food was really poor for the inclusive options. NICKEL AND DIMING abounds. Read your contracts for the drink package and be prepared for a 15% upcharge. You'll also pay for the right to use their carnival app to text on the ship + Extra if you want any kind of internet service (BTW- the internet charges are pretty common on most ships, so Carnival is not an exception). You'll pay for any classes at the gym too, even on spa floor package as they only offer two complimentary yoga classes which fill up day one. BOTTOM LINE: Made the best of it, but paid way too much for a suite on a ship that was overcrowded with really mediocre food. Will not be doing this again. Read Less

Traveled with family 26 total, 21 adults 5 children. We had a ball. Embarkation was smooth, moment we stepped foot on deck it was party time till we return back to our home port. There were so may activities throughout the ship for all ages. Need down time? Plenty of places to relax read a book. Mike Pack the cruise director was awesome!!! He is the energizer bunny, so much energy!!!. The shows were like Broadway shows, comedians were great as well..the food OMG..so much of it.. Who ever complained about the food must be out of their mind.. There were so many different varieties to satisfy everyone and those burgers!!! Delicious.. Been on 15+ cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norweigan.. Carnival tops them all hands down as far as entertainment and having a good time The kids really enjoyed the sky ride, obstacle course, the slides & water park.. They even have a movie theatre.. Overall, had a wonderful vacation can't wait to book our next family vacation.. Of course only with Carnival the fun ship The ship was absolutely beautiful, crew was very friendly..HORIZON is the ship Want fun go withCarnival Read Less

When - July 31 - August 8 Where - NYC, Grand Turk, San Juan, Amber Cove Who - 6 People, Ages 21, 23, 24, 24, 61, 64 I read many comments as we got closer to our departure date and I was honestly weary. Many people made many poor comments, BUT please do not be as weary as we were - we had a blast!! The Food - I, and my boyfriend who traveled with my family, both have culinary backgrounds. We have worked in restaurants and understand what goes on behind the scenes. It is a cruise ship, not a michelin star restaurant. You are going to get par level food, yet it will satisfy you. Oh and remember, for the most part, your meals are free so if you are for some reason not satisfied order something else or indulge in a late night pizza. No one will judge you. My family and I ate at the Main Buffet, Guys Pig & Anchor BBQ Buffet, Guys Burger Joint, The Taco Stand, The Stir Fry Station, The Serenity Salad Area, The Pizzeria, The Meridian Dining Room (Your Time Dining), and The Italian Restaurant ($). We truly enjoyed all of the food, some more than the rest. However, I never complained about my meal. I would recommend The Taco Stand for breakfast (breakfast burritos were highly satisfying) and Guys Burgers for lunch (the burgers are juicy and the fries are perfectly crisp). As for dinner, we ate at The Meridian Dining Room around 6 o’clock each evening. To our luck, we were sat within 10 mins each time and were in and out in an hour or so (perfect if you’re trying to catch a show). I recommend using the app, it’s free and no need to purchase WiFi. With the app you can request a table and it saves a trip to the 5th floor just to be directed to the 3rd. Also to our luck we were sat in a similar section each evening, and our waiter was superb! Please be on the lookout for Andy and request him! He went above and beyond - he suggested dishes and drinks, gave us tips for when we were in port, and said hello (by name!) when we saw him around the ship. My family and I were blown away by his hospitality! The Shows - My mom and dad were slightly disappointed with the shows, as they love theatre and there were no such shows on board. There were plenty of musicians and comedians, however. My boyfriend and I saw each of the four comedians (some twice)! I would recommend the 18+ shows because you will certainly laugh for the entire show. As for the musicians, I personally loved the duo called Imprint. They played pop songs with classical instruments. The musical chords and voices were one of kind. I would have purchase a CD if available, they were amazing. I do wish there was a magic show! A magician came up to our dinner table one night and performed five tricks on the spot. All of our jaws dropped in awe. I truly wish we could have seen more of his tricks through a performance. Even so, I was satisfied with the weeks worth of shows. There was always something going on an something for everyone. Even late at night there were options. My boyfriend and I watch many of the Dive In Movies that we’re offered. You’re given a blanket and popcorn and you can lay down and enjoy a movie. I would recommend getting there a half an hour early to grab a comfy chair on Deck 11. The same is true for all the shows on board. Arrive half an hour early or you’ll be dissatisfied. There are a lot of people on the ship and small areas for performances. If you truly want to watch something, plan accordingly. The Pools - My whole family is early risers, so we never had an issue with lounge chairs. We were outside between 8AM and 9AM and were always able to grab six chairs next to each other in the Aft Pool Area. There are umbrellas here and it is much less crowded than the main pool. With that said, the pools themselves are still crowded. There were only two pools open, unless you were in the Havana Suites. The pools were small, way too small. My family would simply jump in and out to cool off. There was no way with all of the reckless children that we could actually enjoy a swim. Thus, my boyfriend and I attempted to enjoy the adult only area as much as we could. I do wish there was an adult only pool in the Serenity Area, however. The hot tubs are pointless when it is 90° outside. The Ports - In Grand Turk my boyfriend and I did a Paddle Boarding and Snorkeling Excursion. It was a perfect day and a very reasonable in price, $70 a person for a three hour experience. In San Juan my family and I explored the shops and then we walked to the historic site by the ship. It was only $7 a person and with the city views from above the stone walls, it was well worth it! In Amber Cove we all stayed in the free pool area. It was welcoming to have a huge pool to actually swim in. There were also water slides to choose from, which were free to enjoy. My boyfriend and I also paid an extra $20 a person for the all day zip line pass. I was a worthwhile purchase! I truly had the most fun in Amber Cove. The place is gorgeous and there is no need to do an excursion to take in all of its glory. Overall - My brother and I have been on three cruises, and my parents have been on four. This was the first for my boyfriend. Obviously, everyone has expectations. Some cruises do better in some areas than others, however I believe The Carnival Horizon was well rounded. For a newer ship, they could have had more clear improvements. However, the staff was always there to make up for any lacking areas. We all enjoyed our time on board! Read Less

Getting a chair on deck 10 or 11 is trying and I gave up after day one. BUT.......heading down to deck 5 was the best.....so many empty seats and a combination of sun and shade. Quiet too - so if you like to read - bring lots of books! My kids LOVED Camp Ocean and the staff in the club is fantastic. They were so awesome with my children! My kids hated leaving and couldn't wait to go everyday. The pools are indeed packed particularly on the sea days, but there is so much to do that I was never bored. We had nothing but great interactions with the Horizon staff. They were terrific! The comedy shows and entertainment in the Liquid Lounge were great. Can't wait to book my next cruise! Read Less

Everything on the cruise was awesome except the food. The main dining room food was not good at all I did an 8 day cruise we ate in the main dining room 6 out of the 8 nights. The selection was not good the food came out cool or cold never hot. I ordered the filet one night and could not eat it, it was tough cold and had no taste. That night my dinner was a salad and bread. Every night was the same food not good. The waiters and staff were very good. The buffet was ok at times most of the time the food was hot but pretty much the same thing every day. There was no variety at the dining room or buffet. There was also a problem on the ledo deck every day with groups of people playing there own music very loud. I did not go on a very expensive vacation to listen to loud nasty music. Security should walk around and stop this kind of behavior. Almost every day about 4 pm you could count on this music to start, and you would see people pack up and leave the ledo deck. This is not fair to your cruisers and should not be allowed. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it is out of NYC, and had 3 great ports on the itinerary. We were a medium sized group, and not one of us has any complaints whatsoever. The ship is modern and beautiful. The staff were amazing and helpful and always could be found. As for the food, the buffet was really good, we had lunch and dinner there a few times. The Asian, Italian and Pig and Anchor served delicious food for lunch (included) and we dined at the Italian at night and wow, what can I say, it was DELICIOUS and well worth the extra $15 per person. We enjoyed all the bar drinks, they are generous with the alcohol. As for the pool, yes it was small, but we were able to take a quick dip, and enjoyed the water park to cool off as well. It was challenging to find an open deck chair, but all we did was be PATIENT. We went to the bar next to the pool, got ourselves a yummy drink, and Gasp... we waited til a chair opened. Never an issue. As for the entertainment, there was a new show every night, and the dancing and singing was spectacular as was the stage sets WOW. We went to several comedy shows and never left disappointed. We did take advantage of the many activities offered throughout the day, including the fun trivia contests, movies on deck, bingo, crafts, and dancing lessons. All I can say is we had a great time, and are not really quite sure why other people seem to have so many issues when we had absolutely none! Would go again in a heart beat! It is what you make of it and we took advantage of everything they offered! Read Less

First let me start off saying that this is NOT my first cruise #6 but this was my first time cruising on a Carnival Ship. There was at least 30 people in my party filled with family & friends of All ages. Many who only cruise with Carnival. We had a Great time enjoying each other's company & making the best out of our cruise. Now, with that said here's my overall review of Carnival Horizon: The Good: 1. I loved the Carnial App in was the best thing on the boat & it allowed us to keep up with each other on the ship. 2. Guy Fury's Burger Joint was by far the best food on the ship. The location sucked, because the lines blocks the entrance to the dining hall. There is not enough space for it where it is located. 3. Ehar our stewardship was the absolutely BEST! He handled the rooms on the lido deck fwd 10243 what a great guy! Read Less

I chose this cruise because it was a new ship. I was very concerned when I read the negative reviews but then i have been on many cruise lines and i have found that there will always be people who are never happy and tend to criticize everything, Embarkation was quick and easy. The comedy shows were very good. We saw many of the movies on deck at night time; I was pleasantly surprised at how new they were. We saw "The Greatest Showman", Avengers: Infinity War, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Pacific Rim: Uprising, etc. I did not buy the drink package but I always bought the daily special of the day which was at a discount price. The Latin music at the Havana Bar was very good. The only thing i was not too impressed with were the luncheons at Lido Buffet. Luckily, there were other places to go for lunvh; our favorite was Guy's Burger Joint. We had the 6 pm early dining - yes, the meals were smaller portions but you could always ask for more. I actually liked the smaller portions because it left room to order dessert and i also didn't leave feeling like i had over stuffed myself which is what typically happens on a cruise. I never had a problem with getting a lounge chair at the pool; granted, I am an early riser and thus there were lounge chairs available early in the day. We stayed in an Inside cabin on Deck 1 that had 2 bunk beds. I found our cabin to be spacious compared to other cabins on other cruise lines. I especially liked that there was a self-laundry room to wash clothes. We enjoyed the ports although the time spent at each one was short. We did a Snorkeling with power scooter and lunch excursion at Grand Turks through Carnival. We had a blast and I would highly recommend this excursion. We did a zip lining tour in Amber Cove. This was booked through Trip Advisor and was less expensive than the same excursion Carnival was offering. We decided to relax in San Juan and did not do any excursions. I did not find the new elevator system to be a problem; I feel that having read the prior reviews had prepared me in advance. There weren't too many retail stores to shop at and I found that to be disappointing. Disembarkation was a breeze. We walked off with our suitcases and called an Uber. Read Less

They are cheap with water in your room afer 4 bottles for 4 people they charge you for them. Mike the cruise director is excellent always happy. The shows are great nut the sky ride is closed half the time due to wind. The miniature golf and pool tables are a joke to windy balls blew around. The balcony doors are terrible they open like a door and slams so hard you wake up early if a kid is in your next room. So I say Carinaval Horizon is rated poor for my family. I must say the princes on drinks are high one round at the pool is $46. The Imax theater is $12.95 a movie pathetic Read Less
