We chose this cruise for the ports of call Discovery 2 was visiting and we have had a wonderful holiday. The entertainment team put on some truly spectacular shows we especially enjoyed the Freddie Mercury show absolutely amazing, also Carl the UK comedian had everyone laughing from the minute he came on stage to the minute he left and what an amazing voice he's got! The cuisine in all the restaurants is excellent, we especially enjoyed the Italian restaurant, our waiters, we're John Vicoy, Gilzen and the lovely Mary Rose, ask to be seated at Mary Rose's section of the restaraunt, I assure you they will add to your dining experience, thank you guy's and Mary Rose, you really made our holiday special and the trio of tiramasui is the best desert I have ever tasted! A mahoosive thank you to each and every crew member for making our holiday so wonderful. We will be back! Carol and Robert Parkes Read Less

This was our first cruise and we decided on the Cosmopolitan Classics cruise around the Med. Flight and transition from airport to ship was very smooth and embarkation was fast for 12 noon time of day. Our cabin was also ready when we went to put our hand luggage in it. Ship: Very clean, tidy, easy to navigate around and always seemed like there wasn't a lot of people on ship despite it being full. Staff: There was a really happy vibe on the ship and this was due to the happy and friendly staff. They simply couldn't do enough for you. Captain Chris was down to earth and gave interesting ship announcements and information. The entertainments director, Johnny, was very funny and also very informative on daily activities on his TV broadcast each day. He seemed to appear everywhere and set the fun vibe for the cruise. I can't fault all the hardworking bar staff and our cabin steward, Malvin, who's service was excellent. Entertainment: There was always something to do on the ship in the day or night from poolside, talks, dance classes, trivia and Broadway Shows. The entertainment team were top notch and the shows were amazing. The young actors/dancers/singers were all professional and amazing to watch. We went to 5 shows in 7 nights and they all worked really hard as they also work in the day and around the rest of the ship. There are also some very good musicians on the ship playing in the atrium and the live lounge. We did visit the casino some nights and had few goes on the roulette table. Food: we usually ate in the buffet as we found the quality and variety of the food to be exceptional and it suited us for time to allow us to do other things. I always find it difficult to find good vegetarian options in restaurants, but found the buffet offered so much choice for me. We didn't try the paying restaurants as we were so happy with the food in the buffet. Excursions: we booked 3 excursions for the week with Tui. Naples: the port was beautiful and very picturesque. We went to Pompeii and Vesuvius and really enjoyed this trip. Tip_ climbing the rest of the way up the volcano after the coach drops you off at 1000m was hard work, but worth it! Tui books local guides from the area who are very knowledgeable and this really makes the excursion interesting. We also went to Pisa and Wine Tasting and loved this cultural trip and even bought some wine from the vineyard. We went to Monaco and Monte Carlo as we are F1 fans and the lovely French guide gave us time on our own during the trip so we went to the 'Cafe de Paris' and had an expensive coffee and did some people watching. Some people say to not book excursions and do your own thing, but I like the ease of transport and the local guides make the trip more exciting and informative. I think the Tui excursions were value for money. I'm glad we didn't book more than 3, though as you do need time to relax. It was so exciting to find ourselves at a different port each morning and that has given us the cruise bug from now on. We also went on a 'Behind the scenes Ship tour' for £39 each. We met Captain Chris and had a 15 minute question and answer session on the bridge. We were offered tea and shown around the bridge by the third officer. We also visited the engineering room, the M1 under ship corridor, the kitchen and staff and had a glass of fizz with the Hotel manager. We also had a free photo with the Head chef and his hard working kitchen staff. This tour was great and we would highly recommend it. Overall, we had a great first cruise on a friendly and relaxed ship. All the guests were relaxed and happy due to being looked after by the staff and the happy vibe of this ship. The hardworking staff made the voyage memorable and Tui should be congratulated on all the travel organisation and ease of travel. We came home and booked our next Tui cruise for next year. Read Less

We have now been back for a few days so thought it was time I got down to writing my final and overall review of our two week, first ever, cruise. First thing I want to say is that I would definitely recommend a cruise on the TUI Marella Discovery 2 as an amazing experience on a fabulous ship (just in case you are wondering, it is a ship and not a boat, Captain Chris told us so). The ship is incredibly comfortable and I must say unbelievably clean and tidy, this being due in no uncertain terms to the tireless cleaning, polishing, hoovering, clearing, bed making and cabin tidying of the members of the crew who seem to be on the go 24 hours a day. Everywhere you go on board you see someone with a cloth in their hand or a vacuum cleaner running it over another bit of carpet just because. The waiting staff, in the same way, are on the go from way before sun up to well after sun down. Breakfast starts at around 6am when there is an early start to the excursions which I would guess means someone is starting preparation by at least 4am, then as soon as breakfast is over they are then getting ready for snacks, then lunch, then afternoon tea (with proper Cornish Clotted Cream for the scones I must add, yummy, and there was enough for a gurt great dollop). Sorry got a bit carried away with that memory. They are then getting set up for dinner which starts at around 6pm and with 1800 very hungry passengers, many of whom who have been away from the ship on exhausting and hunger inducing excursions, so you can imagine the chaos with this and that is not the end of it for the catering staff as once they have finished with the dinner service they are then preparing food for the midnight snack bar which goes on till... actually I have no idea what time that finishes as the latest we went to this one was around 11.30pm and there were still plenty of people coming in after us. Then just a few short hours later it starts all over again for them. As far as the individual restaurants are concerned, here we go. The Snack Shack - our first experience of dining once we embarked on board. We were wandering around the ship trying to get our bearings and we came across this one and thought, why not. It has a cold frame with sandwiches, wraps, salads and fruit which you can help yourself to and then there is a serving counter where you can get fish and chips, burgers, hot dogs, etc and then the bar area for drinks. I will say the fish and chips were lovely and everyone else in our party were impressed with whatever they had. So good start, well done Snack Shack. Islands - I must be honest, we only ate in Islands a couple of times for breakfast and the 'Cornish Clotted Cream' afternoon teas but from what we could see it was good, wholesome buffet style food which looked tasty and hot. 47 Degrees - Again being honest, we tried to get in here on our first night on board requesting a table for 4. Well... we were told it was very busy and it would be about 30 minutes to get a table. How dreadful... NOT, when you consider that right next door to the restaurant is the Atrium bar where you can get a drink on the house... or was it on our All Inclusive package?!! Sorry, back to being serious now, we were given a buzzer and told that once they had sorted a table for us the buzzer would go off, which it did, but not 30 minutes later, it was about 15 minutes, what a service. We were welcomed at the door by two smiling hostesses who passed us on to the waiting staff who again had huge smiles on their faces and we were shown to our table. Waiter service? But I thought All Inclusive was always buffet style! Not on this ship, 47 Degrees is a fully waiter serviced restaurant where you get a proper fine dining experience of the waiter placing your napkin on your lap, immediately asking what you would like to drink, and I must add, as we had upgraded to the premium drinks package, this basically meant we could have whatever we wanted (too many good quality wines and spirits to list here, I would recommend the upgrade). The menu changes every day and always has a choice of 5 dishes in each of the starters, mains and deserts. The food was amazing, again I can't list all the fantastic dishes on the menu as, like I said they change the dishes every day. One dish I will mention though is Sticky Toffee Pudding. We met the Executive Chef, Carl, on the stairs one morning and I mentioned to him how much I really love Sticky Toffee Pudding. He told me that unfortunately this pudding was not on the menu for another two weeks. Obviously seeing how disappointed I was, three days later on our table at dinner when it came to the desert course he had made a Sticky Toffee Pudding just for me. Honestly! Everyone around was so jealous especially when I wouldn't share it. Actually I did let them all taste it, it was delicious. One of the best I have had, thank you Carl! The Glass House - We ate in here a couple of times for lunch where they did a mean sandwich, chips and salad which you ordered and was made fresh for you from the serving counter. We also had the midnight snacks in here a couple of times, where the curries were lovely and the burger and chips really do sit well at about midnight, or is that sit on your stomach well at about midnight. Not sure? Surf and Turf - You pay a supplement for this restaurant but then you do get to order some impressive steaks which are delicious and tender. As the name suggests they do a surf and turf option on the menu which, surprisingly, includes a steak and some lobster. Again, three courses and a fantastic wine selection which compliments all the different flavours and choices on the menu. One other thing is that all the waiters know which wines go well with which dishes so just ask if you're not sure. And also, again, it is fully waiter serviced where everything is done for you apart from actually eating the food. Kora La - Wow! Pan Asian in this restaurant. Again there is a supplement for this one but BOY is it worth it in here! In case you're wondering from the previous sentence, this was by far our favourite restaurant. The flavour combinations and taste sensations were far better than we ever expected them to be. We actually ate in here four times on our two week cruise in the end. Only planned to eat a couple of times in the supplement restaurants but this one was sooooo good we couldn't help ourselves. Right, on to the most important areas on the ship, the bars. Only joking we don't drink that much... at least not normally. The Atrium bar is a great focal point of the ship with the six floor high, sorry meant deck high, ceiling, an amazing sight and also with the singers, guitarists, saxophonists, pianists, etc there to entertain you while you relax and have a drink, it's great place to sit and chill out after a hard days sunbathing. Then there is the live Room where, as it says on the tin, there is live music played by the resident band, the pianist, or whoever the entertainment is at the time, while you order your drinks and relax. Next up is the Venue where again, surprisingly there is live music at various times and even, once weekly a karaoke evening. Even in the Broadway Theatre during the shows in the evening there are waiters coming round constantly taking your orders for drinks and bringing them right to your seats while you are watching the amazing West End standard shows on every night. In the day time there is a pool deck bar for drinks while you are lounging around the pool, you have a choice of either going to the bar yourself or just sitting or lying on your sunbed and order your drink from the waiting staff who are constantly walking around serving you. Even on the upper decks, the Veranda at the back of the boat, sorry, I mean ship, on the sunbeds around the mini golf course, around the climbing wall or just about anywhere you can find a space to sit or lie there is a crew member coming around taking your drinks order. Amazing! Then there is the Coffee Ports dotted around the ship where surprisingly they serve coffee and cakes and other bits. Every single person we came across who is there to serve you always has a smile on their face and is forever ready to provide you with whatever your stomach requires at the time. Fantastic! Now the entertainment. All the entertainers on board are well seasoned and experienced performers who are only not on the West End stage or performing in arenas because either they are not bothered to, prefer to be travelling the world on a cruise ship seeing all the sights for free, oh, and getting paid at the same time or maybe they just haven't been in the right place at the right time... yet! The guitarist, saxophonist, pianist and singers around the ship are amazingly talented but, again, (sorry, keep saying this) I must be honest with you all, for me the stars of the entertainment are the Broadway Show Team. They perform a different show every night of the two week cruise, only having one night off a week, so that's 12 different shows they have to learn with precision and perfection, learning the songs, the dances and lines for each different show. At our amateur dramatic society we take about six months to learn and perform one show, let alone 12 shows. My hats off to you guys, and each of the shows are amazing. Well, there are other things I could have added to this but I think it is probably time I went to bed and, basically typing with one hand is taking it's toll on me so I need to rest now. I hope this review hasn't been too long and boring for you but then if it was too long and boring for you then you wouldn't have read that last line so that was probably pointless putting that in but, never mind! See you all on our next cruise! Who knows, someone from Marella might see this and employ me to review one of their other ships. We can but dream! Read Less

Everything about the Marella Discovery 2 is exceptional - ship to its crew. From check in which was the fastest yet and well organised to Cabin allocation and facilites onboard. I loved every minute of the cruise. Our cabin 6001 was very quiet ( once you get used to the airconditioning ) great location. Isaac our cabin steward did a fantastic job keeping the cabin clean and tidy. Restaurants were great - waiting staff fast with service and friendly. Food always delicious and plentiful. Adult only area on the Veranda was nice and peaceful away from the frantic fun filled pool areas. Bar waiter came frequently to top up the drinks when needed. Ports - we explored on our own - hop on bus in Naples - scenic route was lovely for a change. Went to beach in Villafrance & Palamos - Olbia - walk around the town & market. Entertainment - Plentiful!! from quizs / kareoke / bands / comedian to nightly shows..Lots to do and see or just chill in the bar with the vaious musicians. Best ship for nightly entertainment.. Departure was again effortless and we were at the airport with lots of time before check in and in departure lounge in no time.. Flight was on time and back home by lunch time.. Fantastic memories were made - sad it had to end - looking forward to the next time! Read Less

We have been on 3 merella cruises before but this was the first cruise on the Merella Discovery 2. What a fabulous time we had from the moment we set foot on the ship in Palma . Secrets of the Mediterranean was brilliant, seeing Scilly, the Amalfi coast and Sardinia was great. The captain told us one day that we would be passing Capri and also the Bay of Naples in the distance and also around 10pm that night we also saw a live volcano erupting, something we will probably never see again. Everything was brilliant. The ship itself was so clean and always something to do. The food was fabulous and was plenty of choice in the different restaurants available. We had a balcony cabin, the first time we have had one and worth the extra. All the staff on the Discovery 2 were excellent but I would like to mention 3 in particular, Emily who kept our cabin 6544 impeccably clean and tidy and nothing too much trouble for her, always a smile. Thank you Emily. Alexander the barman/waiter in the Live room, always so helpful, couldnt please enough and remembered all our drinks. Thank you Alexander. Lastly Tamara in the Coffee Port, what a wonderful, socialable, lovely member of staff, always a smile and so helpful when we were trying to choose what to try each day. Thank you Tamara. Already looking for our cruise for 2020 and hopefully Discovery 2 again. Read Less

Absolutely fantastic first cruise. I Love Marella Discovery 2, in my opinion the perfect size ship for our first experience, not overwhelmingly big but still with lots of choice and plenty of things to do. The Crew went above and beyond for us. The Food was fantastic and the entertainment was incredible. I travel with a wheelchair and was worried about getting about but the crew were so helpful, the weather was rough on the first day and I struggled but there was always someone on hand to help. I even got table service in the self service restaurant so that I didn’t have to carry anything. The cabin was very comfortable and the chocolate on our pillow every evening a lovely touch. We only had a week and there was so much that I didn’t get to try, too much to fit into one week. I Can’t wait to book again. TUI excursions were very well organised and the guides very informative. We stuck with the basic all inclusive package and this still gave plenty of choice. Thank you Captain and crew. Read Less

We were a group of four - a 50+ couple travelling with our 14 year old son and my 80+ mother (with limited mobility). We selected two, back to back 7 day cruises making a figure 8 from Palma de Mallorca around Portugal, Spain, Italy and Southern France. We chose the ship and Marella (Tui) because it went where we wanted to go when we were able to go - we haven’t cruised with Marella before. First - some shout outs to the exceptional service from our cabin staff - led by Faiden - who looked after us all with great care throughout our fortnight. We particularly enjoyed the e-bike excursions led by Niko and Ashleigh - they led us through the sights and the beaches of Portimao, Corsica and St Raphael. We also used some of the coach based excursions- which were comfortable and as expected. We appreciated the peace of mind of all inclusive drinks - the upgrade was not necessary- and saw no evidence of it being abused by our fellow passengers. We were keen patrons of the coffee port, where we always enjoyed friendly service from Tamara. We ended up consistently using the Islands buffet for meals, for the pure convenience and because we tended to be earlier to rise and to bed than most, so that we tended to want our meals earlier than the other restaurants opened. We had breakfast a couple of times in the waiter service 47 degrees dining room - and it was a better experience. Islands certainly has a variety of food, but it has to be said that some of it was not very tasty - which is probably an inevitable consequence of the cooking methods required to produce food on that scale. Nonetheless we opted for convenience and there was usually something memorable on our plate each night. We frequently used the gym and adjoining spa/sauna services which were well equipped and set up. We preferred the Glass house indoor pool area which was quieter and cooler than the main pool area. In summary, the cruise delivered the experience we had hoped for with some of the staff making it that little bit better than we had expected. Read Less

The food is top quality (as an Irish person, mashed potatoes and custard in the Buffet style restaurant a good yardstick and both were well above par demanding a second visit) and are staff very quick to clear empty plates so no messy tables. Plenty of choices for adults and kids. Visited the 47 restaurant for waiter service evening meal and again fab food and very attentive service. Entertainment was some of the best talent I’ve seen. Lots of entertainment areas to suit all tastes throughout the day and evening. Spa therapists provide a variety of treatments and are very good at providing a relaxing treatment. We went on the discovery 2 in April 2019 from Montego Bay calling at Hondurus, Guatemala, Belize and Costa Maya Mexico. We travelled over the easter period therefore some of the places were quiet. We stayed in a junior suite room 8080 but would not choose this room again. The only problem we faced really was that very morning at 7am we were woken by staff putting out sunbeds which seemed to be just thrown onto the floor, as our room was on the 8th floor, floor below sunbathing deck!! Another problem was the two whirpools that were just full of teenagers (unruly ones) who just seemed to hang around all day doing their holiday romance courting. Despite parents speaking to them odd times/checking up on them they still sat there eating food and having drinks in the whirpool then eventually leaving, several hours later, leaving behind rubbish and cups around the side of the pool. Fantastic staff, fantastic food and fantastic entertainment. Next time maybe chose adult only as can not do with rude, unruly children and parents who don't care what their kids are doing. Read Less

We choose the cruise because it was adult only. The food was fantastic latitude 53 and vista where with the fully inclusive package. Both waiter service the service and food where excellent top grade good choice and daily specials depending on which country you where in. Great wines. The market place was self service very high standard of foods different every day great for snacks fresh pizza. We only tried one premium restaurant it was 50euro charge Kora lá well worth it high standard of food but you need to book it early wasn't available a lot of the time. Pool side bar had great beer selection never too busy loads of deck chairs on 3 or 4 levels with burgers and chicken bits pizza always available for snacks. Bars were well stocked they have nearly every drink to avail of the full drink menu you need to buy premium drink package 7 euro a day a must this gives you drinks choice in every bar and restaurant and coffee hall a must. Our favourite bar was squid & anchor great fun mainly due to the staff Brendyl, Joseph and Romal who couldn't do enough to make us laugh and make our holiday a great one found ourselves coming back here every night. The entertainment was good show lounge was huge 1000 capacity the comedian was super well worth checking out and the drink was still flowing here. We didn't use the shore excursions and just ventured out on our own buses were always waiting no ques fast getting off and back on. The casino was small the machines didn't play too well but there was card and roulette dealers in the evening. The night club was busy and we got to meet the captain and all the key staff on the ship and asked any questions great idea. Our cabin was 8056 balcany mid ship very quiet roomy mini bar and 30 seconds walk to pool bar comfy bed and spotless yulia was brilliant and the cábán was spotless. Loved the food drink and especially the lovely staff who where friendly and always chatty. Will be using Marella cruises again 100% can't wait to go again great value for money Read Less

We cruised from Montego Bay calling at the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Honduras, Cozumel Mexico, Guatemala, Belieze and Costa Maya in Mexico. The ship is lovely, not to big so you easily find your way around. The crew are marvellous, so friendly, polite and nothing was too much trouble. The entertainment was excellent, wasn’t keen on the comedian but the show team productions were very good. No complaints with the food, served hot and plenty of choice. We had a balcony cabin on deck 6. Cabin stewards were very efficient, more than enough room although no fridge as not a deluxe cabin. We went on a couple of excursions but were also able to get off and wander around independently. The Tui trips were reasonably priced, we had to cancel one and there was no trouble with this. Enjoyed the dress to impress night. Would recommend and have booked again for next year. Read Less

Dining was very good indeed well for my self and Hilary as we are not fussy what we eat, great in every place we tried. Can not Fault the Entertainment at all very well presented ,and it was nice that they had the time to come and see you after the show. Activities well we are a couple of old dears so we did not do much but what i saw people seem to enjoy them. Service can not fault it were very pleased with how we were looked after. We only went on a few excursions and we enjoyed them, we met some nice Canadian ladies on board , also some nice English people, Being disabled I found quite a few unhelpful people as well. Both my self and Hilary are slow walker and people could not be bothered to say excuse me but just tutt and push past. Myself and Hilary travel together no children, did not see many on this trip. would we go again, yes to some of the countries not all. I must say as far as we are concerned we had a great time and recommend it to any one who feel in need of a break. We have not cruised with Tui before and we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived onboard. The ship is lovely and the crew is extremely friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them. The cabin was clean and comfortable with a balcony and the maid service was excellent. We thought the food and service in the dining room was excellent with a good choice and the food in the self service restaurant and other areas was also good. The shows each evening were superb and the show team are very professional, they would all not be out of place on the West End theatres. The entertainment in the Live Room was also really good. There was no need to upgrade the drinks package as there was plenty of choice on the inclusive one with all the usual well know branded drinks available. There is a small gym and sauna which is adequate and the spa is quite good. The shops don’t really have that much choice but I am sure others may disagree. The pool can get quite noisy with all of the sun beds full and the entertainment going on around it. However the covered pool is a much quieter area. So you can choose which you prefer. All in all the whole trip was fabulous and I would certainly sail on this ship again. Read Less

We researched cruises last year but couldn’t seem to get an “all-in” price so we put cruising on the back burner for another time. This year while looking for an all-inclusive resort we stumbled across the Tui-Marella Discovery 2 Cruise. We read the reviews and purchased our tickets the next day. The cruise was an all inclusive booked through Sunwing, flying fromToronto to board in Montego Bay. This was our first cruise and we loved it! We very much liked the ship. The size was perfect...not too big and not a lot of children. We are in our 50s so we wanted something a little quieter. We loved everything, the ship, our room, the staff, the food, the shows and the drinks. Sasha got to know the drinks we enjoyed and always had a great drink and a smile for us. We upgraded to the deluxe balcony stateroom, and we were not disappointed. The two gentlemen did a great job straightening up our cabin daily, Alma and Nichola (sorry if the spelling isn’t correct)! The staff on board originated from 50 plus countries around the world and worked so hard! Their incredible efforts were applauded at dinner one evening and again at one of the amazing shows. It was a privilege to recognize and thank these wonderful folks! We chose the Exotic Explorer itinerary because we heard about how great snorkelling was in Roatan. We brought our own snorkel gear and snorkelled right from Mahogany Bay (at port.) The snorkeling was excellent, we saw so many tropical fish. We felt the cruise was of great value. There were NO hidden fees at the end of the cruise. We look forward to cruising on the Marella Discovery 2 next year. Leigh and Cathy - Ontario Canada Read Less

Chose this cruise due to the ports of call. Flight out from Manchester smooth, excellent onboard service and check in at Montego Bay was efficient.I knew the ship having previously travelled on her when in Royal Caribbean brand, but transformation was great. We had an inside cabin and was suffucient for our needs as only in room to shower and change, room kept clean by excellent cabin steward. Dining-- we are early risers so we ate breakfast at the buffet in Islands restaurant, plenty of variety of food and very tasty, we also went to the same restaurant for buffet lunch, excellent choices and never had a problem finding something to eat.Had evening meals in 47 restaurant with waiter service, couldnt fault the menus, evening meals excellent choices and our waiters were superb, nothing too much trouble. Now the entertainment, this was our 20th cruise having been with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and P&O, the entertainment team onboard Marella Discovery 2 were by far the most professional group we have ever seen, so energetic, it made the cruise so special as we like the shows in the evening but this team were in a different league from previous cruises,Thanks for your hard work We visited Jamaica, Grand Cayman,Cuba,Belize,Costa Maya, Cozumel, Guatemala and Honduras. We only did 2 tours, Cuba in an old vintage car, pink Pontiac and was great fun, booked before we left with independent company at half the price. We also did the catamaran and snorkel in Roatan,Honduras, this was through ship and was excellent value. Cozumel lots of shops,Costa maya has a purpose built cruise area and this was fantastic as you could watch the dolphin show, free unless you wanted to swim with them, lots of shopping and even pool bars to swim in. Staff onboard Marella Discovery 2 were always smiling, service was excellent throughout the ship, nothing was too much trouble. I would have no hesitation in going on this cruise again, Marella excelled my expectations Just made extra special by all the shows in the evening, this for me was the highlight of our cruise, cant compliment the evening entertainment team enough. Return flight and check in once again smooth and efficient Read Less

It was the first that I tried an all inclusive cruise and I was pleasantly surprised. I have cruised with several cruise lines and I loved the entertainment The crew did a fantastic job with songs from Broadway shows and they were all so enthusiastic My friends had never cruised before and they enjoyed their week away from Arctic weather so much that they can't wait to go on another cruise The specialty coffees were delicious and the waitress was so kind to prepare them the way we wanted. We had offers of alcoholic drinks in the Broadway theatre while we enjoyed the music and that was a welcome plus The Snack SHACK served delicious fish and chips and Phillip was around serving the beer and soft drinks with his Beep Beep cheery voice sharing the LOVE There was only 1 screening daily of movies which did not fit my schedule The ports were great and we had ample time to discover what they had to offer the tourists The embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly I liked the idea of storing our luggage in the Venue room while we went to the port to look around before boarding our bus to transfer to the airport The tables around the pool were being used by smokers so avoid that if someone is sensitive to the smell of tobacco There was a variety in the Islands Restaurant and the Chef tried to make a different theme every night. All in all I would highly recommend MARELLA 2 discovery Read Less

Went on the Cuban Fusions followed by Pride of Panama cruises on the 29th January. After a rather farsical check in at Birmingham, with 12 available check in desks and only 3 people working it resulted in a rather long wait. Flight out again wasn't great as one of the toilets was broken which seemed to cause chaos! We were very lucky with ur landing as the weather was awful when we arrived in Montego Bay, however the Captain managed to land at the second attempt, unlike a flight from Gatwick that had to divert to Kingston! From here in the process was smooth, through immigration in Jamaica, on the bus, through the port check in and on the ship in circa 1 hour 25 minutes, despite the traffic being bad due to the weather. We were show to our cabin, a Junior suite on deck 8 starboard side, and were very impressed with what we saw. Bathroom to the left, with a bath and shower, then a large bed (2 singles joined together), a settee, 2 arm chairs, a foot rest and a coffee table then leading out onto the balcony which had a sunbed, 2 chairs & a table. We noticed most other balconies had 2 sunbeds however Im sure we could have got a 2nd one of we asked. Our cabin steward Nonet was fantastic for the whole cruise, always calling us by our first names preceeded by Sir & Miss, his towel folding was great and he was a credit to the ship. Now comes my only real complaint of the whole holiday, the life jacket drill. Scheduled for 18.30, then moved to 20.00 due to late flights, which is understandable. Our cases arrived by 19.00 (about 1.5 hours after getting on the ship), so we decided to unpack, go to the life jacket drill then eat. so we arrived where we were supposed to be at 20.00, got told eventually to go to Venue to wait. By now it was 20.15 and no sign of the drill commencing, around 20.25 an announcement was made saying it would commence 'shortly', finally at around 20.50 the drill commenced, which led to a rather hangry grumpy passenger who hadn't eaten! Ports - The first day we were at sea but managed to easily get a sunbed, then day 2 was Grand Cayman. Little tip here, as its the only port using tenders on the whole cruise it was very busy between around 9.30 & 12.30 to get of, so Id advise you hang around till about 12.30 (unless you are on an organised trip). Grand Cayman was beautiful, clean, lovely bars, vibrant but be aware, very expensive! 25 dollars for a bottle of cider & a daiquiri!! Next 2 days was Havanna, again the queues to get through immigration were crazy for the first couple of hours so we waited until around 4.30 then sailed through. You are right in the middle of town so can easily do your own thing. Final port of the first week was Cozumel, again you are right in the middle of a huge shopping complex, however we did the speed boat/snorkel trip off the boat. On arriving back in Jamaica we decided to make the most of the ship being very, even eerily quiet, to enjoy some downtime. Week 2 and first stop was Santa Marta in Colombia. Again you are around a 5 minute walk into the town, its a bussling town, you will get pestered lots however I didn't feel unsafe, there are a lot of armed police around. Its an ok town however my least favourite port we visited. Next to Caragena. Little tip here, if you don't want to do a trip or venture in a taxi to the old town, then go to the little zoo/gardens place right in the port, its amazing, with parrots, flamingos, lizards, monkeys, birds, and best of all free!! Theres a lovely little bar and gift shop there, and we had a great couple of hours there. Next stop Panama. I strongly advise you do an organised trip here or stay on the boat, as Colon is very very run down and there were warnings in the Cruise news to be careful. We did the aerial tram/Eco Gardens trip, and on driving through Colon its the only place we went were I really wouldn't have wanted to walk around! The trip was great, got to see the Panama Canal, a sloth in the wild which was the highlight, and also sloths in a rehabilitation centre. The trip is a must for animal lovers. The main trip they do here is the Panama Canal Ferry, however be aware this trip leaves at 6.30am and is around 8 hours long. Finally on to Costa Rica where we did the 3 hour amazon river trip, again saw loads of wildlife, more sloths, crocodiles, monkeys. Trips off the ship are pricey but in general very good. Entertainment - The shows each night were fantastic, and Nashville was one of the best shows I have seen on a cruise ship. So please make an effort to go. Guest comedians both weeks. Also live music in Live room after the shows, in the Atrium there was often a singer too. so plenty to keep you entertained & of a great standard. Food - Plenty of choice. Islands was great for breakfast, Snack Shack perfect to grab a burger, salad, sandwich, fish & chips on the go or sit down. The main restaurant is 47 degrees, with the upstairs Gallery 47, which also has an Italian section. The food was on the whole great. If you want a table for 2 you may have to wait upto 30 mins in busy times but they give you a buzzer so you don't have to hang around. The Italian has 2 menus which it rotates so we tried both of them and theres a different menu each night in 47. We also ate at Kora La, whoch was lovely but £22.95 per person, and in surf & turf which was absolutely amazing. £28 pp, however I had the steak and lobster which wa sout of this worl, so please treat yourselves if you like a steak! Bars - Plenty of bars to choose from however our favourite was Bar 11, up on deck 11. wed go there before dinner for a drink. They do 'smokey' cocktails which are great, and come served in either smoke filled glass boxes or jars. They are free if on premium AI or £2.50 if not. The atrium bar was also nice and busy, an we used to go to the Live Room after the show. Cabin - we had 8554, slightly further back than wed usually choose however due to the over hang, which stops at around 8544, we decided to go further back. Quite a bit of vibration at times however we got used to that, and also occasionally heard sunbeds being moved above us but nothing to disturb us. All in all a great cruise, a lovely ship, fantastic entertainment, amazing staff, including Phillip who will entertain you all day with his 'beep beep, room service, no card no charge' drinks trolley on the pool deck, great food and all in all great ports Read Less

My sister from Canada invited me to go on this Cruise with her friends. The ship was extremely clean. The Shows were awesome. There were many other activities including golf and rock climbing. Every night we enjoyed the entertainment. The stage performances were great. The actors did a wonderful job. I felt as if I was in New York without paying the price for the Broadway show tickets. The crews were outstanding. Food and drinks were delicious and non-stop. I still keep hearing the bell and Mr Spread the love. I met many interesting people. We had great times at Jamaica, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. I highly recommend this cruise for the perfect sized ship and outstanding crew. It was a peaceful and very enjoyable experience. I definitely will take another trip on the Marella Discovery 2 Ship. I thank the captain for a safe trip and the crew for their hard work and outstanding services. Read Less

This was our first cruise and being in the service industry we are subjective to service levels relative to overall experience. The cabin size was very adequate and it was serviced daily with impeccablle care and attention - loved the "towel animals" - thank you Reginald our service steward! The various restaurants both included in the package and additional fee ones were excellent. The service team at Gallery 47 Lloyd, Victoria, Aimee, Carolina and Aiyu made the Italian Dinner even more special. Dinner at Hot Stone Restaurant was a unique experience and our server Jacob and his team member Rayse were fabulous. We ate dinner twice at Kora La enjoying two great dinners served by a great service team of Randy, Hoely, Jaydeep and Katut. The live performances on the ship were first class with our favourite being Nashville. We had two refreshment servers that went above and beyond, Sherene and Phillip Rickets. Phillip was the life of the boat from serving drinks to dancing and dancing with guests hence being the most photographed person on the ship - Phillip you truly are and were our star - THANK YOU!! Do people just go on cruises to moan about things??? Our holiday was perfect from start to finish. The food, the entertainment, the destinations, the excursions, the staff, the cleaners, the ship....everything was perfect! The 2 dancers on board george and alex were lovely, Katie, Harlequin and the young blonde lady who played Tinkerbell in the Peter Pan show were really polite friendly and helpful. The BEEP BEEP man serving drinks at the pool side and in the show lounge is a legend and I think he might have been the most popular attraction on the ship! We tried all the free restaurants...mostly good not perfect but that's the benefit of the buffet....if you don't like it go and pick something else! Over the course of the week I only encountered one person that I didn't find to be friendly and he worked in the Snack shack place, maybe I read him wrong but he didn't seem too willing to pour me a drink and slammed the drink down in front of me after ? Maybe I'm right maybe I'm wrong. Anyway....we loved it so much we have returned home and booked to go again in 2 months time! See you soon Marella Discovery 2! Read Less

This was a value for money proposition and we were not disappointed in the slightest. Booked our cruise through Sunwing from Toronto, and paid the extra $60 for the premium package. Well worth it, especially if you travel often: priority check-in and boarding at both Pearson and Sangster, advance choice of seats, and a $5o future travel certificate. As only one of us really drinks alcohol, the drinks packages on other lines have never been worth it to us. But on the D2, beyond the booze, we were able to enjoy great espresso, cappuccino, and fancy mocktails galore. The all-inclusive drinks package was perfect for us, great beer selection (Peroni, Corona, Guinness etc), Cosmos, Raspberry Collins, Harvey Wallbangers, Stolichnaya vodka, Tanqueray gin...nice enough wines with supper. The food for us was fine, but nothing special. My Beef Wellington on Dress to Impress night was waaay under, and my dessert was forgotten. But the company at our shared table more than made up for it. We had a better experience at the Italian 47'. Another shared table, great conversation, and good food. Our waiter Jayson whipped out his guitar and serenaded our table and a few others nearby. He was spectacular. We also saw him in the crew show, and at breakfast in 47. You won't regret asking to be seated in his section. Islands buffet was busy but fine. Never went hungry. Indoors we chose a table for 2 near the bow windows. Outdoors we got a shady table with a breeze. Snack shack worked for a quick bite, especially when we had an early excursion. We booked Surf&Turf for our anniversary. Attentive service, wonderful ambience and good food/presentation. They did a special centerpiece and provided a surprise anniversary cake for us. Very nice. Glass house was ok but the vibrations got to me. We tried the late-night foods and also had lunch here once while we were sitting on the Verandah (do check out this space if not traveling with kids. Aft deck 9). We enjoyed the onboard entertainment. Paul Greenwood and his guitar were great. The showteam was pretty good, with the gentlemen being superior to the ladies. We saw all the shows and enjoyed. The actor hosts were fun. Katie and Adam were our favourites. We enjoyed playing archery, darts, indoor curling and carpet boules with them, even karaoke and name that tune. The bartenders did not neglect, especially Tijana and Moka in the live room! By day 3 they knew it was coffee time when we popped in mid-afternoon and made us excellent espressos and cappuccinos. And of course Phillip "beep beep no card no charge spread the love" up on deck! Also tried a few topshelf cocktails in Bar11, well worth their £2.50 upcharge. And we never went thirsty in the atrium nor on the Verandah. The deck party with the Caribbean band can't be beat, such a fun night. Dancing in the atrium, playing moonlit minigolf, bandjam, sunsets on the decks outside bar11... all great memories. At Santa Marta we took a cab to Taganga beach and ate at TaCo beach bar. Good food, ok beach, expensive cab (he waited for us so we paid by the hour, but did not negotiate well). Sailing away from Cartegena, keep an eye out for the island castle! Also take time to explore the wildlife area right at the port, lots of toucans and other birds. We did a private tour with Dora the Explorer, highly recommended. In Colon Panama we did a ship tour including a boat on Gatun Lake where we saw wildlife from afar, and the new locks. Also option to do a nature walk at locks, but we watched a huge cargo ship go through. In Costa Rica we just walked around near the Port and saw more wildlife at the park nearby than we did on our organized tours. A momma and baby sloth, three owls, monkeys etc. Nice market, less industrial than the other ports on itinerary. Sunwing guests note you need to transport your luggage between airport and cruiseport, unlike our UK friends. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves immensely and would sail on D2 again in a heartbeat! Five Stars * * * * * for our 5th cruise with Thomson/Marella and the 2nd time for Pride of Panama. Booked through Sunwing, we flew from Toronto to Montego Bay, just under 4 hours, no time change. Aircraft (737) was a bit cramped but ok for the short flight. Immigration in Jamaica is always a bit unorganized, just take your time, make sure you have a pen. Marella reps were in the terminal to direct us to the buses for transport to the ship. This is about a 30min ride depending on traffic. Driver was entertaining, even explained the meaning of KFC! Boarding the ship was quick, just need to register your credit card, get your cruise cards and tag your baggage. Your baggage once tagged will be taken to the ship and left outside of your cabin. Bunch of locals hanging around wanting to move your luggage looking for tips etc, just ignore them. We were in cabin 6005 near the bow. This is an inside cabin above the entertainment (Venue), we found it to be quiet and all that we needed. I suspect there may be a little more roll/sway near the bow, was not a problem. I always take a(one) Gravol before retiring. Food - Really enjoyed it. Usually ate breakfast and lunch in Islands, dinner in 47. The Dining room(s) is "Any Time Dining", we never had to wait more than a few minutes, when it's busy they have pagers. You have to ask to share a table, we asked and shared every night. Nice to talk to and meet your fellow cruisers and share experiences. If you do not fancy sharing there are more than enough small tables for two. Entertainment - Spectacular! Amazing how 12 people can put on such a wide variety of nightly shows. Also did the backstage tour with Dennis & Emily, interesting and two very nice young entertainers. We are not into sunbathing, inevitable that some folks will be out early reserving there spot. We never had a problem finding a lounge away from the pool area and at times found one near the pool. Lots of places to sit out in the sun or shade. The cruise is all inclusive, we did not observe any alcohol related problems, lines ups etc. We are 1 non and 1 95% non drinker. Ports. We did ship booked tours in Santa Marta, Colon and Puerto Limon. All good except we found the Santa Marta tour interesting but too long, as we prefer ~3hours. Colon was a bus tour on the locks, on on Pacific side, the other on Atlantic side. Puerto Limon was a tour of the Tortuguero Canal, most excellent. Also did out own "walking tours" in Cartagena(cab to town) and Puerto Limon. Leaving. Always sad but inevitable. You have to have your bags packed and outside your room by 2am. You have to vacate your room by 8am. You can leave your hand baggage in Venue and use the rest of the ship. Have breakfast or lunch if time permits. We had to be off by 12 but were called at 11:30 to go to the airport for a 4pm flight. We had booked club MoBay which provide a relaxing soft seat with included drinks and a light lunch. Read Less

Where do u start? While searching for a first cruise for my husband and I , I stumbled on marella discovery 2 through Sunwing. We choose Marella mostly because of price point .. all inclusive and the ports for pride of panama. Everything lived up to our expectations, had a balcony room mid ship and was great, I loved the tea kettle in room instead of the usual coffee pot! Lots of tea bags, coffee, milk and sugar. We had tea and coffee every morning on the balcony. The food was good never had anything we didn’t like. ( well except for black pudding) I will leave that for the brits. Buffet had something for everyone. The snack shack was my favourite I like the fast food . I had the fish and chips everyday, so good! My husband loved the chicken wings and the burgers. STAFF.. ALL AMAZING!! Never waited for drinks long , served fast everywhere and all so friendly. I work in bar/ restaurant industry so I recognize good service when I see it! I know when they are busy and what drinks are a little more time consuming. I’ve been to many resorts and the staff are great.. but guess what they are they way because they want you to tip them. The staff on Marella are not being nice for that reason, as tips are included. They just like their jobs! I would Seriously say the staff on marella discovery 2 are the best I’ve seen. ENTERTAINMENT.. AWESOME .. this team works so hard to entertain the audience. They are all so talented and we enjoyed the shows so much. I really hope sunwing remains offering this package to us Canadians , we will definitely do another cruise with Marella. Oh and we did really enjoy meeting so many great people. So nice haveing a drink talking and learning about each other’s countries.made for some very interesting conversations. I could go on and on about our trip!
