Scenic is a scam. My family fully regrets booking scenic Gems of Danube for my grandma’s 80th birthday. The experience was anything but “5-star”. For starters, we were not informed of the lock issue on the Danube until members of our party were already flying from USA to Hungary. Therefore, cancelling the cruise was not an option. Due to the lock issue, we were unable to board the boat and instead were bused around from hotel to hotel and stayed extra nights in Budapest. The service at the hotels did not meet our expectations (mediocre food, no spirits) and we were left spending our own money on drinks and essentials like water. So much for a “leave your wallet at home” “5-star” experience. We escalated our concerns to scenic representatives, even senior leadership at corporate, and no one addressed our concerns. Instead they kept saying “we understand” and “we are working on it” but it was all talk and no action. Overall, I would recommend that you do not trust scenic with your vacation, our experience was very disappointing and no where near “luxury”. Read Less

Let me start by saying that I rarely write reviews but after the poor customer service we have had to this point I could not stay silent any longer. It all started when we received notice from Scenic 24 hours before (even though they knew 3 days before they sent notice) we were suppose to be getting on the boat that the lock that was damaged and the boat could not get to our planned departure point. You have to question if this was done on purpose giving us no opportunity to cancel. Up to this point our river cruise has been a bus tour hopping from one hotel to another. The all inclusive cruise has turned into an a la carte experience with many simple amenities having to be purchased separately by us. Hence the title of my post since one of their main slogans is “leave your wallet at home”. I do have to say the Scenic cruise director has listened to our concerns but has had absolutely no backing from upper management. Our group has escalated our concerns to Scenic management in Europe, North America and Australia and recurved only empty promises that they would address our concerns. I work within the service industry myself and find the (non)response from management totally unacceptable. We planned this trip for over 24 months to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday with 29 family members. We had thought we had picked the premier European river cruise company but that is not the case. My husband and I researched and planned this trip for 2 years before deciding on a Scenic cruise due to all the online reviews we found. Being our first time in Europe and out of the country we wanted to make sure we were getting an amazing getaway trip that we wanted. Not even 24hrs before our departure from the US we got an email stating that due to an incident involving a lock being broken (the incident occurring back in June) we were no longer able to board the boat in Budapest and given the option to cancel however the fees of canceling flights, already taking off work( my husband with no PTO), kennel care wasn’t worth it. Upon arriving in Budapest we still were not told of our accommodations for the next two nights. We jumped from hotel to hotel and ended up having to spend money on our credit cards because we had not planned on bringing much extra spending money due to everything being included. Upon arriving at the second hotel we asked the representative sent from Scenic about a daily allowance or what things would be included and were told that beer and wine and a dinner would be provided. We were on our own for everything else. When speaking to the corporate representatives (over the phone) we were given the run around and never a straight answer. Then spent 2.5 hours on a bus to Bratislava and another 1.5 bus to Vienna. Our “included” excursions were also effected and canceled due to this. For a “5 star” “all inclusive” trip we were given neither. After attempting to raise concerns to the corporate offices and get answers or any type of compromise we got no response and thus have taken to writing a review. I would not recommend using this company to anyone ever and am very disappointed in the customer service from the corporate representatives. Read Less

We signed up for a luxury river boat cruise and received a low budget bus tour. Scenic could not control the lock accident preventing our group of 29 people from loading the river boat but, they could control their reaction. Our group spent many hours of our vacation attempting to contact scenic representatives and scenic senior leadership to request simple things like free filtered water and information on what hotel we’d be staying in the next night. When we did receive responses, the representatives were unapologetic, had little to no information and failed to offer solutions or compromises. We did NOT receive complementary alcohol, plated dinners, butlers, laundry/ironing service, free water, or any type of monetary refund/credit. Instead we received a different hotel room every night, two star hotel buffet meals, and consistently canceled free choice tours. We spent countless hours on buses and waiting for hotel rooms to be ready. I will always remember scenic river boat cruises as the company that ruined my grandmas 80th birthday. If you’d like to enjoy your vacation, I’d suggest booking with viking river cruises, they actually treat their guests with respect (www.vikingrivercruises.com). If you do chose to book with scenic, I’d bring coins to pay for the numerous gas station bathrooms, as you are shuttled like cattle from city to city. Enjoy the smell! cheers! Read Less

We had the best food, crew and tours. Due to an unfortunate incident involving a damaged lock on the river, we spent the first 3 days on land in coaches and hotels which was a little tiresome and inconvenient. However, I believe they did the best they could under the circumstances and I personally think the cruise director and his staff did everything they could to make everyone happy. The only gripe I had was we travelled as a family of 4 and booked cabins next to each other, but we were on completely different floors during the entire land portion despite me telling them to rectify at the next hotel at the first hotel. The food on board was amazing, get ready to indulge in the most sumptuous cuisines and getting spoilt by the crew. The staff in all areas were wonderful and friendly and made us feel at home and we’ll looked after. I cannot speak more highly of the staff members we encountered. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was where we wanted to go and had the best ratings. The cabins were beautiful, the service excellent, and the food and drink fantastic. We were offered a variety of excursion options, and each one we chose was excellent. The staff were very friendly, accommodating, and proficient. The cities we visited were wonderful and the people who took us on the excursions were knowledgeable and often very humorous. When we encountered a broken river lock that prevented further travel by boat, our cruise Director, J.J., managed to arrange travel by bus and 5 star hotel accommodations that ensured we went to the cities listed and had available the same excursion options. In fact, the hotel stays allowed us to walk out the front doors into the heart of the cities, so that was a minor inconvenience. It was an amazing trip that we have recommended to every who asks. And we will do another cruise as soon as we are able. Read Less

My wife and I thought this was an easy way to experience Europe without a lot of pressure on us and we were right. From the start Scenic was fantastic. Pick up at airport in Budapest was the one thing we were nervous about but a Scenic employee was waiting for us in the arrival hall. A light lunch was being prepared for us when we reached Scenic Amber, which we were pleasantly surprised about, after being up for 30 hours. The ship was very clean and we were welcomed by Mauricio the hotel manager. The entire crew was awesome. From JJ the cruise director to the lounge and wait staff. We loved this group of people. It didn't take them long to know what our drink order was or "Egg benedict?" for breakfast. This group was truly fantastic. Food was great!! I have read some negative reviews about food and they make no sense to me. My wife is a picky eater and she was so proud of herself for all the unique and new foods she ate. Chef Istvan is very proud of his work and he should be. They make the bread on board and I had to have some every day. Great choices of fish or different meats that tied into the area we were traveling. Well done! We were on the Jewel Deck in a small cabin but it was fine. We liked the extra storage on the "shelf" next to the picture window...ran the whole length of the cabin. Very helpful in a tight room. Room was just a place to flop. Great shower though! The excursions were great. I loved having time, other than Budapest, to be able to go off on our own for at least 90 minutes. Plenty of shopping and sightseeing was done. The concert in Vienna was awesome as was Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna, Melk Abbey, and the trip to Salzburg. Regensburg was so much better than expected. Entertainment seemed fine. We watched a little of it. People seemed to be enjoying it. My wife and I liked hanging out in the evening air on the top deck and watching the river and lights. Again, the service by this crew couldn't have been better. We wanted to take a few of them home with us. I love friendly banter and this crew is allowed to be themselves so hats off to Mauricio and JJ for that. The crew was very attentive and made sure your glasses were full if you wanted them to be. We definitely hope to go on a Scenic cruise again...maybe the Rhine next time...after we get the two kids out of college! Well done Scenic Amber!!! Read Less

Had been on Ama (wonderful), Uniworld (good) and wanted to try Scenic. Also wanted Danube cruise that went to Salzburg. The service was excellent, room kept very clean, and excursions good. Wine far better than we were expecting but food was a disappointment. Beate, the cruise director went out of her way to help everyone but she was leaving at the end of our cruise for a private job opportunity. Some of the excursions groups were too big and they should have hired another guide or 2 to keep the groups smaller. The new system for the headset didn’t work well all the time, but that was due to too large groups. The biggest disappointment was the food. Breakfast was a 10 but lunch and dinner fell short. Sometimes the food was lukewarm. The veal schnitzel was almost inedible. There were no wow factors. The salmon and tenderloin that you could always order were under seasoned. The gala night had Canadian lobster tail and beef Wellington and it was very good. Then the closing night was turkey. The turkey was good but it doesn’t seem like a luxury dinner on the last night of a luxury cruise. They could Improve by doing a grill on deck with bratwurst and cheeseburgers! Soups were generally pretty good. Desserts were average except for ice cream. We are excellent home cooks so food is very important to us. I will stick with Ama for future cruises. Or try Crystal. But Scenic and Uniworld are out. If you are a foodie, go with Ama. I’ve attached pictures of menus and wine lists and daily plans. I wish I could have received this information in advance so hope it helps others. Mark, the musician, was excellent. The dancers were ok. The concert in Vienna was very nice. Portobellos had excellent appetizers and desserts but mediocre entree. Have to submit photos separately because they don’t attach from an iPad. Read Less

Scenic provides a high end cruising experience and if you need to, start saving your money and book a cruise! We chose Scenic at the suggestion of friends, with whom we travelled. As people who have never been on a cruise (either river cruise or ocean cruise), we were excited about the all-inclusive nature of Scenic’s cruises. We were not disappointed. From embarkation until the penultimate day of the cruise, we had an excellent time. The boat itself had a luxurious feel. All the common areas were very clean and comfortable. Our room was spacious and well appointed. But what made the cruise exceptional were the staff. Everyone from the room attendants, Butlers, serving staff, bartenders, Hotel Manager, and Restaurant Manager were all friendly, kind, and helpful. They were able to accommodate dietary issues without hesitation. If the room attendant saw that you prefer certain items in the minibar, they would ensure you were properly stocked for the next day. We appreciated the hard work the staff did to keep the boat maintained at a high quality during the cruise. The level of detail from the staff was astounding. We will always remember the staff with fond memories. Shoutouts to Marica, Zania, Sijlvia, Snez, Milan, Dejon, Branislav, Vuk, Martin, Marko, Mauricio, Nemanja, Milos, Alex and Stan! They were the stars of the cruise. Special mention to Birgitta, our guide in the Wachau Valley; Wanda, our guide in Cesky Krumlov; and Dominic, our guide in Nuremberg. As with most things, there were issues that were out of Scenic’s control. While river levels were good, there were issues with the lock system on the Danube. The Cruise Director, Beate, was able to troubleshoot issues with ease; however, we took issue with her plans for disembarkation. High water levels on the Danube meant that we could not make it to Nuremberg. Instead, we were let off about an hour away. We understood why we had to disembark outside of Nuremberg, but we took issue with how the Cruise Director planned transportation for those who were to stay in Nuremberg after the cruise. Beate scheduled us and five other couples to disembark at 7am and take a coach ride to the Nuremberg airport, as we assumed some of the couples would fly out that day. From there, we were to make our own way into the city of Nuremberg. Whilst on the coach, we learned that none of the six couples had flights from Nuremberg and that the Cruise Director essentially kicked us off the boat at 7am and had us escorted to the airport when none of us had flights. We were so disappointed. Other passengers headed to Munich or Prague were able to remain on the boat until late morning. Fortunately, our guide Dominic decided to bypass the airport and take us all into Nuremberg city centre. From there, we checked into our hotel. In addition, Dominic had time to give us a tour of Nuremberg’s Old Town. It was early morning on a bank holiday, so it was like we had the city to ourselves. What was such a disappointing end to a fabulous cruise was saved by Dominic. Read Less

The food is better on the large ships (Celebrity Cruises). One night they had a special dinner with Lobster and Scallops and no one at the table liked the scallops and the lobster tail was very small. Food could be better. All the staff on the ship were amazing !!! They did an excellent job and were more then helpful. From the Captain right down to the man who cleaned our room. All the staff were wonderful. The tours were very nice and the buses were great with washrooms on board. They could also have better entertainment. The best nights we had in the lounge were the Disco night and the night they played Trivia. That was fun ! Read Less

The entire staff on the Amber went above and beyond our expectations. Our Cruise Director Beata was the entire package. She was extremely knowledgeable, patient and professional; Scenic is very lucky to have her. Our hotel manager, Mauricio, ensured our staff was more than we could have expected. We enjoyed that the Chef would explain each meal depending on our location on the river. The meal choices were equally enjoyable, we never went away hungry. Although the weather was not as great as one would want, that did not change how we felt about sailing with Scenic, it was amazing. If we could suggest anything, it would be to have umbrellas available on the buses as the weather could and did change without warning and we did not have any umbrellas available. Read Less

Loved special concert in Vienna they scheduled for us as well as a piano concert at school for deaf in Budapest. Cabin Steward was Dejuan . He was helpful in making suggestions and so very professional and cordial. Also all wait staff in dining rooms were great, Alexander, Stan, “Daniel Craig”, Andy, Wilber, Rada, JJ, etc. loved them all. Food was good and especially liked that evening meal, while elegant, was just right amount, not too much. Only recommendation would be that on shore excursions it would have been better if passengers were given hand held devices as a lot of our iPhones lost power by the end. Wish we could have had more time at all of the stops, especially Budapest which was a real hidden Gem. Also adding names of wines which we had on board to an app would be helpful updating n our return Read Less

We have tried many other river cruises companies; SCENIC is the best one so far. When it says EVERYTHING INCLUDED, everything is indeed included: no surprise such as port fees, beverages (top quality brands & excellent wines), tips for staff/guides, excursions etc.. You do not spend any extra penny if you wish (besides merchandise on board or extra tips for great staff). Dining is super:BREAKFAST- many varieties of meats, cheese, vegetables, eggs, juice, breads (to die for), a la carte items such as lamb chop, grilled steak, different types of eggs benedict; LUNCH: 2 soups every day, cold dishes, hot dishes, so many choices and not the same ones during the whole cruise, the 2 ice creams are so exquisite; DINNER: every day menu is a surprise and delight to your taste buds (we consider the chef, Milos, and his staff did a marvelous job). The wine choices by the Maitre D' were more than excellent (are you listening, other River Cruise Companies!!) Overall, the whole crew, staff and management work like a well-oiled machinery complex: we are delighted to see the little detail each wait staff is performing to the next level- which shows the degree of careful training from management- Kudos to SCENIC. Minor Problem: Scenic is introducing a new app/program you can download on your smart phones or tablets (you may borrow one of theirs) to listen to all commentaries during excursion, self-guide tours, description of cruise itself while on rivers etc... As in any new app, this one was not ready for the "grand opening" which means half of the time it did not work as described. Scenic management needs to be aware of the frustration caused to their guests. Read Less

Chose this trip because of superb reputation of the company. Were we wrong! Has the company been sold to a low price, cut the corners outfit? We were to sail from Bern to Amsterdam. They knew weeks in advance that the river was low and much of the trip would be by bus. TELL US AND LET US CHOOSE TO CANCEL. No, we learned the day before departure that there was a problem and the extent of the problem was only leaked out by the cruise director on a day to day basis. In apologizing she said they only discovered the problem 2 days before departure. THIS WAS A LIE. We encountered other passengers from competing vessels who were notified weeks in advance and given an opportunity to cancel for a full refund. I won't go into details of the itinerary--mostly traveled by bus. We missed staying in 5 scheduled ports, excursions were cut short because we had to be bused long distances and several excursions were not done at all. We had to pack-up midway and transfer to another vessel downstream. We had paid for and were in a deluxe suite on the first ship but in the new ship we were put into a smaller cabin. THE DOOR SIGN HAD BEEN CHANGED TO APPEAR TO BE A BETTER CLASS CABIN.. When confronted the staff had to admit that the new vessel had fewer deluxe suites and so some passengers had to be downgraded. Scenic has offered to GENEROUSLY allow us to claim partial reimbursement from the trip insurance we purchased for 3 of the 8 days of the journey. Five or six of the days had poorer itineraries than promised. We spent at least 20 excess hours on buses. The company has offered no compensation, no discount on a future trip (which I would not take anyhow) or other accommodation. The staff on the original vessel, the Scenic jewel, was first rate, interested in our comfort and concerned about the changes in itinerary. The crew on the Opal were uninterested, expressed dissatifaction with the conditions of their employment and generally unavailable to deliver services. Read Less

We had seen ads and decided to check out a Scenic presentation. We discovered a hidden gem in the sea of river cruise options. We knew we had stumbled on to something when we discovered that booking went quickly 18 months before departure. Scenic has thought of everything, and I mean everything. Everything is included. Drinks top shelve, meals gourmet that's all meals, professional and friendly staff made this fabulous trip even better. The excursions were all incredible. One in particular was the performance at Palais Leichtenstein, a beautiful palace complete with renaissance art. We sipped champagne and listen to an orchestra in a beautiful room. It was like going back in time. Can't say enough positive things about the rooms, sumptuous and well designed, the food, delicious and varied as was the great wine, the hardworking staff, particularly our tour director, and the excellent entertainment both on board and off as well as the beautiful picture perfect stops along the cruise This was a dream vacation and we are so happy we had a chance to experience Scenic. We were greeted at the airport and everything from there until we came home was orchestrated to perfection! We spent 2 days in Budapest before the cruise started. Communication from Scenic personnel was top notch! There was never a question about what was happening next. All of the staff were polite and friendly, funny and caring. Richard, our cruise director, was knowledgeable about every stop and knew what was important for us to know. The lounge staff were great- they got to know the passengers and their drink preferences. Sonja, Putua,Michka were a few of the staff we impressed with. Our cabin was spacious and comfortable. The food selection was awesome, prepared just the way you wanted. Port and shore excursions were well planned and the tour guides were all very pleasant and knowledgeable. Embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly and without incident! We were greeted with a warm wash cloth and glass of champagne the first night, and daily upon return from our shore excursions there was always someone at the door, greeting us, with a tray of snacks or drinks and with a welcome back did you enjoy your trip? We would absolutely recommend this cruise, cruise line and are planning out next trip! Read Less

We chose Scenic because our friends sailed with this company and everything was included. We attended a seminar and we were impressed with the information. The high water situation was discussed and so we booked in September to avoid the spring rain falls. Before we left on the cruise, we heard rumours of low water levels and scoured the internet for information about cruise interruptions but could not find any. 2 days before we left Canada, we received an email from Scenic saying our ship had been changed to the Amber and further in the email a paragraph "The upper Danube river between Passau and Regensburg is experiencing low water levels and our Cruise Director will keep guests informed of the changing river situation and required cruising amendments." My travel agent called Scenic and was told they knew of no issues with the ships sailing the route. Once we got there, we learned not 1 ship made it all the way along the route since June! We had cancellation insurance and could have rescheduled everything at that point. Scenic would have had their money and we would have had ours. If we had known we were to pack up and change ships twice and spend hours on a bus, we never would have gone on this cruise! Misrepresentation and lies is all we got. As well, on the Rhine gorge portion, you know, where you are supposed to be having a glass of wine and gazing at castles, they put us on a noisy, stinky public ferry. Adding insult to injury, as the ferry ground along, we looked over and a Scenic ship went by. They make it seem like they are doing you a big favour by moving your luggage for you and rearranging the schedule to get as much in as they promised but it is a huge inconvenience to be jumping up early and packing and unpacking to be shuttled on a bus where there are a bunch of people coughing. We both got sick from being cooped up on busses for hours. Don't be fooled by the advertising. More than 1/2 the time we were docked beside another ship, staring into someone else's cabin. The top of the ship is closed a lot as well, to get under the bridges. This route is packed with ships, way too busy. Having said all this, I must add that the facilities on the ships, the food, service and tours were amazing! I only regret I was not offered an opportunity to go at a time I could have enjoyed it to the max. I have been offered an insulting refund amount according to their "cruise guarantee" which I am disputing. They have acknowledged receipt of my letter but have not responded. It's been more than 2 weeks. Read Less

We booked a 14 day cruise with Scenic from Budapest to Amsterdam, and had a very mixed experience. Due to low water levels (not Scenic's fault), we ended up on three different ships (the Amber, the Jade and the Ruby; the original itinerary was supposed to be Pearl). Overall, the facilities, food and drinks were fine and the crews on both the Amber and the Ruby were outstanding. Where things came unraveled were in communications and the transfers between ships necessitated by the low water. We were transferred on the eighth day, by bus, from Passau to the Scenic Jade in Nuremberg, although we had been told that the water was only low between Passau and Regensberg, thereby bypassing 100 km of river. The crew on the Jade were obviously upset about something (some were downright surly for a while). Then on day 11, we took a smaller third party day transit boat (obviously arranged at the last minute and very poorly appointed) from Rudesheim to Marksburg Castle, then we were bused back to the ship in Rudesheim and next day we were bused for over 3 hours from Rudesheim all the way to Cologne, basically bypassing the entire Rhine gorge, even though we saw, from the bus, the Scenic Pearl sailing upriver at Lorelei. After the bus ride, we had to wait in Cologne for another four hours for our luggage; the courier driver had gotten lost, we were told. The tour of the cathedral in Cologne was an unmitigated disaster. Clearly, Scenic had dropped the ball in dealing with the low water level contingency plans. We felt we were misled on several occasions. We were offered C$526 total compensation out of about C$20K paid and haven't heard back from Scenic on our requests for further compensation. We won't be sailing with Scenic again. Read Less

As with Highfler's review (we must have been on the same cruise), we were disappointed with the 2 ship swaps and corresponding bus rides - in particular the 3 1/2 hours on the bus to Cologne was annoying. As noted by Highfler, our bus ride was along the Rhine where we saw the Scenic Opal going upstream in the area where the Scenic Jade wouldn't sail through - puzzling and annoying to say the least. Scenic Amber was great - staff took an interest in us, food and drink was super After the ship sway, we went to Scenic Jade. The thing that most stood out for not only my wife and I but our other cruise mates, was the staff. They didn't seem to be as interested in our needs as the Amber crew. Service was average. Then another ship sway onto the Scenic Ruby. The crew here was super just like the Amber crew. But the annoying and disappointing issue with the 15 day cruise is the ship swaps - we wanted a cruise where we could unpack, leave our stuff in closets for 14 days and then pack to go home. During these ship swaps, I forgot my converter in my cabin. The bus ride to Cologne was a disappoint as well - we get to Cologne and we have to carry our hand luggage around for the "short" guided tour of the outside of cathedral. Our bus got to Cologne after 11:30am and the tour was finished at noon. Then we had 1 hour of free time to browse (while lugging our hand luggage around). We get back to the bus to take us back and then we were informed that our luggage wasn't at the ship, and we could spend more time in Cologne - at this point, I was frustrated as were all on the bus - just take us to the ship! We planned this trip as a Wedding Anniversary and chose Scenic after going to an information session. We were originally supposed to be on the Pearl but changed to Amber a few days before departure. We spent 2 extra days in Budapest, were met at the airport and transported to the Marriott very efficiently. We enjoyed the 'Hop on, hop off' bus to explore this beautiful city. We arrived on the Amber and were warmly greeted by the staff. Our time on the Amber was 5 star + +. Rooms, staff, food, and entertainment were exceptional. Thank you Giovanni, (our butler who I nicknamed 'the flash'), and all the Amber staff. They really made us feel like we were home. Then we had to change to the Jade. Yikes, the staff were Ok, but not nearly as friendly, with the exception of the bar staff, who were cold, verging on rude. I get it, you work really hard on a ship swap day, but don't take it out on the guests. The beds were hard, and I had a sore back for 2 days. I find it difficult to understand why such a reputable company would allow such different standards in customer service between ships. Thankfully we switched to the Ruby for our final days, and we were back to almost 5 star. Beds were more comfortable and staff was, although not quite up to 'Amber' caliber, very good. Entertainment on all 3 ships was excellent, and we enjoyed many nights in party mode after dinner, with all the great guests we met on board. Tours and guides (Eva and Jacop stand out to me), were amazing, in particular, the concert in Vienna, the Sound of Music dinner and the Medieval dinner theater. While I understand the need to swap ship when the river is low, this is not something new, and the process seemed needlessly cumbersome, for example our luggage truck got 'lost' on one swap, really? It seems like the river might be overcrowded and dock space, (and perhaps luggage trucks?), are hard to come by. We went by bus to the Medieval dinner and back, but passed other cruise line ships going up river, and some docked where we were going. Scenic is providing a small refund for the inconvenience which we appreciate. All in all, we loved it and would do it again if we could do it all on the Amber! Read Less

Our Cruise started off wonderfully on Scenic Amber. We left Budapest September 3 and started sailing. However by September 10 we had to disembark, as a result of lower water we had to pack the night before so we could change to Scenic Jade. On September 9 we were not able to do our desired choice excursions due to time it would take to get there by bus. Instead we were offered a last minute tour of Linz, which was not what I had wanted to see. This trip was our one big expensive journey with many expectations. So when we got on Scenic Jade the staff were not as attentive as they had been on the Scenic Amber. The Service on the Jade was not up to the standards of the Amber ship. Restaurant staff and bar staff were extremely slow in their service, you could tell that they weren’t happy with there job and this came across to everyone. We had to endure this ship change but the staff on the Jade were taking their frustrations out on passengers. So we continued on sailing till we were supposed to be going to Cologne but were not able to sail any further and we had to disembark once again. That next day we would take a four hour bus ride to Cologne where we were going to have a shorter tour of city and then free time. We had not been told the night before that our buses we got on in the morning were not going to take us to the ship. We found this out just as we were getting on the bus. Our bus left late for some reason and also decided to take a longer route to Cologne so we only had a short tour of this beautiful city, 1 hour in total. This was originally to bean all day tour. There was one good thing we got another Crew on the Scenic Ruby, they were very friendly staff, more like the Scenic Amber although our staterooms shrunk with every ship more and more. Our luggage also got lost so we didn’t leave Cologne till after 5:30 so this meant that we wouldn’t be able to sail to Amsterdam and get there on time. So in the morning we once again had to go by bus to reach our tour trip on canals on time. The ship arrived later in day. So overall this was far from the trip of a life time, if I had wanted to take a bus so much I would have booked a bus trip. Scenic knew about water levels before and should have offered us a seven day trip with a refund for the rest. Or offered a full refund to sail when water levels were higher. We met wonderful friends on this trip and that is one thing they did give us. But I don’t feel we got compensated for the two full days of sight seeing we missed. Or the unfriendly and sub par staff of Scenic Jade. I think they should be reprimanded for the way they treated Scenic Passengers. I wouldn’t travel with Scenic again unless they compensate passengers better. Read Less

Scenic had at least 3 to 4 weeks notice of low water levels that interrupted my trip but did not advise or give any options to postpone until better conditions prevailed. I would not have had a problem if this was a last minute change to the itinerary but because this was a well know fact to Scenic they still did not communicate the problem. I saved for over 10 years for this Luxury First Class River Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam and spent a lot of time changing ships, packing and unpacking and taking 4 hour coach rides to destinations. I did not plan a Bus excursion I planned a River Cruise. On a bright note the crew, staff, facilities accommodations on board were lovely. Everyone on board was caring and compassionate. The ports of calls visited were amazing and all the excursions were packed with information from English speaking local guides. Read Less

We had never done a cruise before; ocean or river and decided it would be a terrific way to celebrate our wedding anniversary. While scheduled to go on the Scenic Amber our ship in Nuremberg was the Scenic Jade due to low water levels and Amber's inability to travel the Danube. Our Scenic travel arrangements were seamless. We were met at the airport, taken to our hotel that we were staying at the night before our cruise date, and then met in the hotel lobby then next day for transport to our cruise. All we dealt with were lovely, professional, courteous, and friendly pointing out interesting places en route. When we arrived at the ship it was prior to 3 pm but we were welcomed aboard enthusiastically. Our cabin was a bit roomier than we expected it to be and our butler Igor was charming. We were welcomed with a lovely card and a bottle of bubbly for our anniversary. A wonderful touch. The cruise director Richard was helpful, informative and upbeat. He had a bit of a job as we had been warned that we would likely change ships midway through the tour due to water levels and unfortunately had to do a bit of a dance until it was confirmed. He handled it all well from our point of view; difficult role to play being the messenger. We enjoyed the varied dinner menus with multiple options, riverside cafe, our special dinner invitations to Portobellos and Le Rive, the people we met, the well-organized tours, the tour guides, the ability to opt out if we wanted to explore on our own and the myriad of additional touches we experienced along route. We did change ships to the Scenic Pearl (apt as Pearl is the marker for 30th anniversary) midway through, missing Passau and our only wish was we had done this the other way around starting our voyage on the Pearl, as the Pearl cabin felt a bit smaller than the Jade but the staff were super. We were so impressed with everyone's attention to detail and the farewell night song to the travellers was hilarious. We are definitely fans of river cruising now and already investigating where else we want to explore. Kudos to all onboard Jade and Pearl. You helped create the most fabulous and brilliant wedding anniversary memories we will treasure always. Read Less

My husband and I were celebrating several special events: We had our 50th anniversary, I retired two months prior to the cruise, and my birthday fell during the cruise. We highly recommend Scenic Tours for creating an amazing journey for us that was first class in every way. We were switched from Scenic Amber to Scenic Jasper before we boarded, but the ship was beautiful, modern, impeccably clean. Service was outstanding. This cruise was all-inclusive, so we were constantly approached by staff asking if we wanted anything. The dining experiences were nothing short of amazing. Huge buffet breakfasts and lunches, regional foods, great choices. Dinners were four or five-course meals that were outstanding, delivered with perfectly appetizing plates and with wonderful presentation. The ports we visited were abundant in rich history, ancient cultures, and unforgettable scenery. Even when faced with Mother Nature's wrath (low rainfall resulted in the Danube River becoming so shallow in spots that navigation was tricky), the staff performed above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction. At one point we had to swap ships, where we transferred from Scenic Jasper to Scenic Jade, so that we could continue one more day of our river cruise before disembarking in Nuremburg for our trip to Prague. The transfer was held with precision and professionalism. All the excursions were totally amazing, and the historical descriptions we were given both by our very knowledgeable tour guide and/or the electronic, hand-held "blue box" ensured that we knew what every landmark was. The cabins were small, but we expected that! We didn't come on this cruise to sit in the cabins! The accommodations were extremely comfortable, ultra-modern, and highly satisfying. We cannot recommend this cruise enough to anyone who wishes to be immersed in the amazing history of Austrian and German castle ruins, palaces centuries old, storybook villages, with impeccable dining, wines, mixed drinks - anything we wanted was offered to us! We hated to see the trip end! Well worth the cost! Read Less

We chose Scenic because of newer ships—rooms bigger and ships lower. They had great reviews as a touring coach company. Our trip was delayed starting out because of storms. Missed our connection in Amsterdam but Delta and Scenic had us covered. We were rebooked on next flight and Scenic still had representative to meet us in Budapest. We even made the evening dinner cruise to see Budapest at night. The next day, Scenic picked up our luggage before we were taken to ship, which turned out to be the sister ship, Jasper. Our room was the same and it was quite comfortable, plenty of storage space and loved balcony sitting area with top of window coming down. Our cruise director was wonderful—he kept us informed, organized, and entertained us! The local entertainment was very enjoyable. The service was outstanding. When Scenic said all inclusive they meant it. No service charges, no drinks charges and no extra excursion charges. The food on board was excellent—especially the specialty meals. Our ports of call and guides at each were great. The voice devices were great! My husband does have very bad hearing and had trouble until we used his own iPhone ear plugs. My hearing aides worked fine with the devices. They even worked as we traveled the Danube. They would beep if there was an interesting place to describe. My husband and I traveled traveled alone, but met so many wonderful people on board. I would go on this trip again! Read Less
