Came back to Royal Caribbean because of prior cruise. Food and service was excellent. Island activities well planned. Deluxe drink package a must and well used. Only problem was with our cabin. We were not happy with vile odors coming from bathroom and constant problems with the Heat/AC unit. The entertainment shows were high caliber, entertaining and a lot of fun. The wait staff in our evening dining room were extremely friendly, looking out for our best interests, always smiled and were extremely respectful and courteous. We did reserve one dinner at Chops specialty restaurant which turned out to be even more outstanding. We would recommend to go slowly as there was so much tasty food that just kept coming. The wait staff were high caliber and couldn't do enough for us. We were a little unhappy with the disembarkation process upon docking back at Miami. We were told we would not be allowed to disembark with out roll on luggage and would have to leave them out during the prior evening. However, there was an announcement that those with carryon bags can leave the ship anytime they wanted. I couldn't believe I heard that after the ship's personnel told us we had to check all our bags. But overall a great experience and we booked another cruise in December while on the ship. Read Less

This was my first cruise. You have to be careful of all the hidden fees. Do your homework before booking. The entertainment weren't that good and when you're confined, you don't have much choice. The excursions are overprice and not worth it. Unless you been to each location before, you might avoid certain excursions. As my firstMy cruise, I didn't have any idea what to except, so do some homework on that also. The cruise itself was nice. The staff were really great. They could have better activities on the ship and for the food, there is plentiful. Don't forget the ice cream cones...mmmmm I was in a stateroom with a view. I thought the room was going to be small with a little round window. I was pleasantly surprise when I opened the cabin door. the room was much roomier than I was told about and it was a full size window. The only thing that was small was the shower stall. Thank God I'm a small person.. Read Less

We chose this cruise based on the good deal we got, but from the moment of arrival, there was nothing that seemed "discounted" about our cruise (in a good way). We had the best time of our lives. The staff was friendly, personable, funny, charming, helpful, attentive and accommodating. The activities and theme nights were tons of fun. The ports were awesome: We chose to tour Key West on our own and had a beautiful day visiting historical sites and lounging on the beach as well as dining and shopping. In Nassau, we went to Atlantis and had a blast. This was our first cruise, so we probably appreciated the small size of the empress more than some who are seasoned cruisers. It was perfect for us so we were not overwhelmed, but there was never a lack of things to do, even during our full day at sea. The dining experience was amazing. Elegant and delicious food in both the main dining area and buffet, never a shortage of snacks and drinks available to us. Read Less

We have reviewed this ship before so I will limit this to things unique to these two four night back to back cruises. Nassau and Key West were the two ports of call with one sea day in between. Unlike most cruises to Key West, these stayed in port until 8:00 pm. Because of the time of year, this meant that it was there after sunset and so it was possible to walk around town at night. This adds a whole different atmosphere to the town than in the daytime, and it was great fun. Part of the fun was the famous sunset celebration on Mallory Pier. This consists of jugglers, acrobats, craft carts and music. Because the ship docked right on Mallory Pier you could even watch from the promenade deck if you didn't feel like going ashore again in the evening. And you could watch the sun set from the other side of the ship! It is good to se this kind of creative scheduling, as I have often wondered why ships didn't stay late enough for this event, which is a famous feature of Key West. Most things on the ship were the same as on the previous cruises. The staff remains a highlight of this ship. Diamond and above will find the receptions and special gatherings memorable, even though there is still no nightly reception. The dining room food and service remains excellent, but unfortunately the Windjammer continues to be a big disappointment. Why it is not possible to have grapefruit halves at breakfast, even though they did on previous cruises on this ship, is a mystery. And why can't they have a selection of different cold cereals in individual boxes like on every other RCI ship? Especially when most of the choices in the rather tacky bulk dispensers are sugared kids brands. This was the first time we could not have the buffet on the sea day due to the fact that the line was enormous all morning long. Not sure why, as this was not the case previously. Too bad, because this is a nice feature of the ship, but no good if you can't get in the door. Capt. Diego, Staff Capt. Chema, Rosa and Gulliana (guest services), Ricardo (loyalty ambassador), Silvia (my time dining), Rafael and Made (cabin stewards), Carlos (Boleros) and many other wonderful staff members make this a great ship to spend time on. On a final note, the seas were calm all week, which was fortunate. Probably calmer in the Bahamas this time of year than the windy Western Caribbean. Some have said on this site that this ship does not have stabilizers, but in fact it does. But if seas are too rough they can't compensate for it. No issues on these sailings, thank goodness for that! Read Less

We have previous experience with Royal Caribbean and we trust in the way the provide it's service: very professional crew members, good food, excellent service and lot of fun on board. We went to Key West, Florida and to Nassau, Bahamas in a four nights cruise, but even when it was a short length of time we has a wonderful trip and a very good experience as passengers of the beautiful Empress of the Sea. The ship is very comfortable and has all the amenities you need to make you feel at home. Even in an interior cabin you will have all your bear necessity cover almost in the same way you can expect from a luxury one, of course the difference is on the space but you after all you will note that this will not be an inconvenience. Embarkation and disembarkation was a pleasant process. We start planning our next vacation with Royal Caribbean today! Read Less

I am a diamond member and usually enjoy cruising with RCCL. On this cruise, my wife and I did not get any sleep because of loud banging (construction) going on below our cabin. The Director of Housing was attentive and immediately changed my room on the first night, but the noise only got worse in the new room. The first evenings dinner (NY strip) was lousy. No one at the table could eat it. I overheard other guests complain about the same meal. The headliner comedians were very funny and provided great entertainment, however, the RCCL singers and dancers seemed amateur-ish and not the usual great quality of entertainment we have experienced on past cruises. Even though gratuities are automatically added to the daily bill (as well as the 18% service charge for every service or drink) the staff still had their hands out for more. While reading at the pool, two young ladies struck up a conversation and were very disappointed with this as their first cruise. They wanted to actually abandon ship on day one and get their money back but were told it would cost them another $300 just to leave. I did share with them that while I was equally disappointed, my past experiences with RCCL were much better. Suggested that as mid-20 year olds, they might try spring or summer break cruises on larger ships. The age group, entertainment and activities might better match what they envisioned cruising would be. Read Less

My wife chose this cruise for our anniversary. I have been on nearly all of the RCCL cruise ships and I have to say, this was the worst. First of all, let's talk about the Junior Suite ripoff game they have going on here. They sell you a room as a Junior Suite, when on any other ship, it's just a balcony room. For the extra amount you are paying for a "Junior Suite", you get the same prison shower that you get on the regular balcony rooms, no fridge, very little storage, etc. IT'S A BALCONY SUITE NOT A JUNIOR SUITE. In reality, I have been on other ships in their balcony rooms which turned out to be bigger than this "JUNIOR SUITE". This is a complete rip off. Let's turn our attention to the food. Small selection and I could not find one decent piece of meat to eat. All of them were tough and dry. The chicken was actually much better prepared and seasoned than the meat. And seriously, we need two Mexican nights. Let's turn our attention to the drinks. Sat out by the smoking area most of the afternoon and not one single waiter came by to take my order. Had to flag one of them down and I realized he was like a manager but at least he was nice enough to get me a drink. Let's turn out attention to the ship itself, it's 26 years old and it shows it. It is in dire need of a lot of minor repair work. Bulbs are out, canvases are ripped, carpeting is pulled up, etc. This ship still needs a lot of work. Oh and last but not least, when decided to do the early disembark, what I like to call the walk off. We got there fairly early and people were hanging around. We sat there for like 15 minutes and then when new people started showing up instead of getting to the back of the line they just walked right up to the front and stood there. My wife said something to one of them and then another passenger said that their is no line. This created a stanpeed of people rushing for the door. The only question, I have is where are the RCL employees who are supposed to guide people when they come in. Nowhere to be found. Overall, this was a huge disappointment for us and we will never be back on this ship again and I do not suggest you go either. RCCL has much better ships with much better deals than this one. Don't waste your time or your money. Read Less

And also the room service after midnight cost for the delivery. The boat was a smallest one ive been on but was god for relaxation. The food taste was great but like i said before wish it was open later for the people that have different sleeping paterns.  The rooms and bathrooms in the room were very outdated , but other parts of the ship were updated recently.  But getting on and off the ship was the smoothest and quckest ive ever wet through out of all the cruises ive been on. There was alot of older folks on the cruise and i know they had a great time . It was very easy for them to navigate with little walking. I wouldnt recommend this as a cruise for kids though. The embarkation & disembarkation was the best & smoothest I have ever seen. But As a seasoned cruiser I will tell you that...This ship is the oldest & smallest & the most dated in the RCL fleet. Their is very limited amount of things that you can do on the ship due to it's age & size. However the crew goes way above & beyond to try to compensate for this; which is a big plus. Although RCL did an update on this ship they didn't go quite far enough with the reconditioning of it & it shows. We did the Atlantis water park & all the bathrooms & 1/2 the rides were closed due to an water/ sewer main issues & none of the staff was informed about the bathrooms being closed until several hours later & then only some of the bathrooms were later opened; which when traveling with kids is a nightmare to say the least. Having been to Atlantis several times before it has gone down hill over the years & it shows. if you have never been there before you will love it unless you need use the bathroom. The Empress ship it's self is a great ship for a weekend get away but not much else.Don't expect much with it and you will not be disappointed. Read Less

The staff on the Empress were very friendly, helpful and informative. I am glad we traveled with them and will travel with them again soon. I DO RECOMMEND purchasing the drink packages (if you're going to drink more than four drinks a day) three days prior to boarding. We did but some othes did not and the price jumped $21 dollars a day per person in the cabin purchased day of cruise on the ship. I DO RECOMMEND trying out the stateroom service at least once while on the trip. I DO RECOMMEND getting out to the pool area early to save a chair in the sun. I ALSO RECOMMEND eating at the Starlight lounge. We ate there three times during our four nights and loved the food selection. *Surf and Turf was awesome! I DO RECOMMEND visiting Niki and Kamlesh (Kam) in the Schooner on deck 5. I don't believe there isn't a drink that those two can't make. Ask Niki to sing for you at least once before you leave. Remind Kam that $20 tippers sit to the right of the bar. (per Paul &Kristi). Lastly, when in Nassau try a snorkling excursion with Jake and Bing. They are located next to pier ( to the right) once outside the shopping area in port. Two very nice younger guys. With a center counsel boat. Took us out for two hours sight seeing and snorkling by Paradise Island for $50 per person. Enjoy you trip!!!! Read Less

Got a great deal, but truly in this case you get what you pay for. Small ship, only a little single saltwater pool. 1 out of every 3 or 4 deck chairs has broken bands that make it very uncomfortable. Food is great, we had one server that was very slow but the others were fantastic. Child care is a small room for 3 and over, but staff inside did a great job. He wanted to go, and when I would check on him the staff was engaged in playing with him and he was having fun. He liked the staff so much when he would see them on the ship later he would run up to them to greet them. Maintenance is really getting behind, and you can see it everywhere - miscelleneous washers to hold things up, missing brackets or fixtures, an oversized bolt with a head on it to hold the door handle in place, rust bubbles that are just painted over, etc. Don't really affect the operation of the ship, but just show the direction it is going. The other bars was not very funny...On the karaoke night, a little girl of 6 years old was singing and it was not really interesting for adults. and the service was very slow at the bars. Activities on the ship at the pool could be more interesting if they could show the activities on the screen because it would be easier to see what is going on when we are not close to the activities around the pool. I have frequently taken the RCCL Majesty of the Seas on the 3 day weekend cruise and have always loved that ship. Now that that ship isn't available out of Miami anymore, I was pleased to see the Empress of the Seas is now available. Several things made this ship better. First and foremost - Non-Smoking Casino!!! Also, some very nice seating areas around the pool (I am not comfortable on lounge chairs and have always wished there were more sitting chairs, and this ship has several areas, one in the middle, shaded, with very comfortable chairs and some small tables; as well as many tables and chairs in shaded areas, and a coffee/water/ice cream station outside as well). A hidden gem is the Boleros Lounge - great atmosphere, very comfortable seating, great bar -- and a great place to watch the sunset (when heading somewhat due east). I do wish they featured more varied music, rather than just latin (but it is Cuban-themed, after all). The food was extremely good, the best I have had on RCCL, and the entertainment was terrific. The itinerary was also great, as we had a day at sea rather than Cococay (which again has very little seating other than the very uncomfortable lounge chairs), and it was 4 days rather than 3 (which is sooooo much nicer). The cabins are still small, though, and they don't have the shelves in the closet. Tip: I found out too late that you are permitted to take one bottle of wine per person, with no corkage fee. This must be new, as I never saw that before. Read Less

We did a dauphin encounter while in Nassau, and it was terrific. We did not get off the ship at Coco Cay (which was ok) and only spent about 11/2 hours in Key West. I just love being on the ship. Ship was small, but that was good for us. Pool is very small. loud and full of kids. No adult pool. We did not like that. Food was good, lots of variety and quite a bit of healthy food. Our cabin was below the theatre, but exceptionalism for one night, the theatre closed at 10:00--so not a problem. We choose this cruise because of the dates of the sailing and the ports of call. The Good: The empress of seas is an old ship and small ship, but we actually enjoyed that part of it. Fewer lines than the larger ships, which equals more time for fun. Our dining room waiter was great and very attentive. Never had trouble getting a chair at the pool. Embarkation and debarkation were very smooth, and easy on, easy off at all ports of call. The not so good: we purchased the unlimited drink package and were a bit disappointed with our ability to actual find bars that were open in the evening to use it. One night the dance club, Viking Lounge, opened at midnight and closed at a bit past 2am, with at least 50+ people still inside looking to stay. And there were no other bars open on the ship open after that. Even the casino and its bar were closed most nights by 1:30am. Our diner time was 8:30pm, so some nights by the time were done with dinner around 10pm, and wanted to have a few drinks, some bars were already closing. We spent a lot of time in the casino, and it was HOT in there. there is a serious air conditioning issuue in there. But it was tolerable. What was unacceptable was the fact that neither my husband or I were never once asked if by the wait staff to get us a drink while playing. We had to get up and get them ourselves. We also watched 2 movies on the pool deck. One in the evening and one during the day and were once again forced to get our own drinks from the bar, as the wait staff appeared to be standing in the corner watching the movies. Food: dining room was seriously lacking in selection and presentation. We opted for dinner in the Windjammer buffet more then once after looking at the menu in the main dining room and seeing the same entrees as previous nights with 2 or 3 exceptions. The Windjammer Buffett was great, but could use some redesign in its layout. The Buffett lines start on both sides and come together in the middle causing a cluster of people all fighting for the same food. Having always cruised Carnival for the past 20 years I doubt I will stray again! Read Less

We booked this cruise last minute via the RCL website. We wanted a short cruise and had positive experience on our past cruises with RCL. Unfortunately, the cruise was not at all what we expected. To begin with, the check-in process at the pier took well over 30 minutes, there were 5 counters opened to serve the 200+ regular guests (those that did not have priority check-in ). When we finally made it on to the ship, we were surprised at the lack of customer service we received. Friendly smiles were few and far and only appeared when one was making direct eye contact. A large majority of the staff appeared tired and disengaged. and The food at the Windjammer was pretty much the same from day one with 2-3 dishes that were new each day. I chose this cruise to celebrate my birthday which I do every year. The price was right and thats why I chose this particular ship. The Empress of the seas was recently refurbished, but it shows its age. The cabin is still very small in contrast to todays standards, but its still a beautiful ship thats small and does not feel crowded. Dining was a hit and miss. Most food was usually cold by the time it got to the table and the coffee was bad most of the time. The only great thing on Royal Caribbean was the lobster night on sailings of 5 nights or more. Entertainment was also hit and miss on this small ship, the same with on board activities. Service by the staff was top notch. They try to do their best with a ship thats been in service since 1989. The shows were pretty much typical cruise show productions. The piano bar pianist did a really good job. Personally, I didn't care for the comedian duo. Their type of comedy left me uncomfortable. I was so relieved when they didn't call me out for anything! Our biggest complaint was the times when none of the dining areas were open in the afternoons. Also when they would only let me get ice cream in a cone even after explaining my allergy to the wheat in the cone. Very pleased with shore excursions staff. The seas were pretty rough at Key West and the excursions staff quickly and easily cancelled our excursion and refunded the money to us. Overall, a great trip and I would do it all over again. My girlfriend and I chose this ship because it was cheap and we were curious about Royal Caribbean. We typically cruise with Carnival, but this time around they did not have any of the destinations we wanted at the price we were looking for. This overall cruise is getting a poor rating because of the following: -The cruise porters will damage your luggage or tear off your luggage tag if they are not satisfied with your tip -A majority of the crew members do not acknowledge the guests -The entire crew as a whole seemed like they were in training -Breakfast was a mess, the eggs were runny and not cooked enough, cold french toast and pancakes every morning We did have good experiences with our stateroom steward. He was very detailed and quick. We wish more of the crew aboard this ship was more like him. We are hoping this is just an isolated incident and do not want to hold Royal Caribbean to this experience alone. Please, Royal Caribbean, take this experience to better your staff and improve on-board experiences by raising your level of detail. Read Less

Got the cruise as it was 5 days and the cost was very attractive. HOWEVER. the bargain ended there. I am a platinum member and got directed by a Royal Caribbean employee to the wrong check in line and wasted almost an hour in a line I should not have been in. On Sunday, it was the NFC and AFC Championships and many off us requested the games be played on the big screen on the top deck. "Not happening" was the response. Instead they made about 100 people stuff into the Schooner bar with no food brought in or even nearby. That rubbed many people the wrong way. And then during the games, they run a stupid trivia contest for about 5 people and shut off the volume of the football game to accommodate the the trivia contest during the first game, which caused an uproar, and simply turned up the mic volume for another trivia game during the second game. I thought the Steeler fans were going to riot for that bad call. Second worst thing is the poor lighting in the interior cabins. Couldn't use the safe in the room as there is no light to read the instructions on how to use it. Another light at the "Make -up" desk is also needed. The Windjammer coffee urns are way too small and seem to be empty more often that they should be. Every morning the same story waiting for coffee. The Coco Cay experience if the final subject I will write about. Nice island overall. Tenders were okay. Problem is they totally close the food area at 1:30. That includes even cookies....nothing available after 1:30 even though the final tender off the island is 4:30. When they closed the main bar on Coco Cay at 2:30 I got pissed. I paid for the Ultimate Liquor package and got shortchanged here. If you want beer, that was available at smaller stands, but those stands did not have the mixers for the drinks I wanted. Read Less

And when he was around, he was not chatty with the passengers. He was just walking through. The cruise shops were so so. Not very big, so not a lot to purchase. My cabin was small (its a small ship). However, I had an amazing person who was super sweet and kind everyday that cleaned my room. He was very smiley and always asked me how my day or night was. I ate a lot of salads because there was nothing good that I liked on the daily menu that never changed. The spaghetti tasted like tacos. It was gross. There was not a lot of entertainment. A few shows but nothing spectacular. The gym was small but I used it everyday. It was best to use after 11 am. Read Less
