We had toured parts of Europe on or own before and thought a cruise would provide a convenient lodging structure that would allowed us to spend time in various cities without searching for hotels and the flexibility to participate in group excusions or to go our own way. The Viking Cruise was perfect. We spent six days and nights prior to the cruise in the Netherlands and Belgium befoe boarding the Alruna and embarking from Amsterdam. At the conclusion of the tour in Basel Switzerland, we added another week to tour Switzerland on our own. We were very impressed with the ship. It was like being in a very upscale hotel. Service was outstanding, the room, while small, was plenty spacious, well appointed and very comfortable. It actually lived larger than I expected. This was partially because the rest of the ship was so available and comfortable at any hour as lounge, lobby, restaurant, observation platform, bar, library, etc. Food was very good, entertainment fine. Cruising the middle Rhine while on the upper deck was all that it is cracked up to be and offered amazing views and an excellent informative narrative. Shore excursions kept us busy, entertained, and educated but there was plenty of time for us to explore on our own. I have to say that our Activities Director, Alex was a highlight of the trip. His tours, and programs are simply outstandking! His contributions especially were educational but presented with great humor, and knowledge. He not only informed but entertained us. It was a joy to benefit from and watch such an accomplished professional at his craft. We really can't imagine what a cruise line could do to top the experience we had with Viking and we will go again. Read Less

First time river cruisers, our group of six had the best time ever. The staff , the food and the ports of call were amazing. We had always heard Viking was the cruise line we would be treated royally, and we were. The dining experience was delightful and delicious each and every breakfast and dinner. During the day we were able to explore the fascinating sights and pionts of interest. Our loca tour guides were extremely knowledgeable, and yet personable, with stories of interesting historical facts, people and events. We will be planning our next adventure soon. Thanks Viking for a most memorable and enjoyable river cruise. In 2018 it will be off to the Best of France. We were offered some very unique discounts towards our next cruise by purchasing vouchers, which can be used on our next booking. Just as a piece of advise, consider the Silver Package for a delightful assortment of Top Shelf liquors if that suits your taste. It certainly was worth the cost for what I received. Read Less

We wanted to experience river cruising and going to Amsterdam. Take an in depth picturesque experience with visiting cities along the Rhine River. Our prior cruises were ocean cruises and we wanted to have the daily stops and excursions on land to get to know better the different life styles. We were not disappointed at all and more pleasantly surprised on the knowledgeable excursions and guided tours. The food and service was exceptional with friendly staff waiting patiently to serve our every need. We found out a day after one of our excursions where we withdrew cash from an ATM in town that we lost the money. We asked on board the ship if any money had been turned in and sure enough it was. We were amazed that the cash was turned in which showed the honesty of the staff and other travelers. Our dining experience was so pleasant as we met so many lovely people and had no pressure at all to interact if we didn't want to. Dining was so easy going as we could dine casual or dressy as we choose. it was so refreshing to have those options. We loved all of the experience and look forward to another Viking Cruise. Incredible cruise director and cruise manager. Impeccable service began at the airport in Amsterdam and ended at the airport in Basel, and that was after we had spent a week in Switzerland after our cruise ended. The Viking rep in Basel airport spotted us hesitating at the check in and guided us through the procedure, even though we were not part of the boat that had docked that day. Local guides were incredibly informative on the daily morning tours. The cruise director, Alex Berger gave preview talks, laced with his special brand of humour, every evening before dinner. There were no surprises as the boat was on time every day. Meals were exceptional. The female cruise manager had a proficient team from the captain on down to the servers and stewards. They thought of every detail, like handing out umbrellas on our one rainy day tour. Also bottled water at the door when we left every day during a 30 C week from Cologne to Basel. Every member of the staff had the computerized information for each traveller's itinerary from the flight from Toronto and back from Amsterdam. That was the secret behind the flawless performance of every team member on our journey. Read Less

Relatives of ours had taken this Rhine River cruise and raved about it. Having done it ourselves now, we agree. My wife and I have done 9 ocean cruises and now one river cruise. This one rates right at the top. The ship was cozy and comfortable, with a good restaurant, bar and top deck for observations. The crew was fantastic - not just competent at their jobs, but genuinely friendly with the passengers. The stops along the Rhine mixed amazing history (from Roman to WWII), beautiful vistas, amazing cities, good food, wine and German beer. Highlights included the Van Gogh Museum, a canals dinner cruise, and the Red Light district in Amsterdam; working windmills in Holland; going through locks on the Rhine; Cologne Cathedral; Marksburg Cathedral; Heidelberg Castle, and Strasbourg, France. Particularly interesting was a visit to the Colmar Pocket, which both visited sites of key WWII battles and also included French wine country and a wine-tasting! This is a bucket list cruise - I highly recommend it. Read Less

Would have like earlier hotel check in since our flight arrived at 8:30 AM and we could not check in until 3:00 PM. Once on board, everything was first rate. The ship was beautiful. The food was great. The service was as good as it could be. The crew and staff were always friendly and helpful. Cabin very well laid out and comfortable. Plenty of storage space. Bathroom big enough and well appointed. The bed was very comfortable. The TV reception was limited and not that good. The excursions were very well manage and the guides were knowlegable and entertaining. The bus transport was very good. I would have liked them to start a little later. The day of the Castles on the Rhine was spectacular. We will definitely take another Viking Cruise. We are considering a Mediterranean Ocean Cruise for next year. Read Less

Our late-August Rhine cruise from Amsterdam to Basel for an early celebration of our 30th anniversary was truly extraordinary. We woke, every day, full of wonder that we were actually cruising the Rhine in such understated elegance. The Viking team thought of everything. They are both a luxury travel company and an extraordinary logistics company. Transfers for shore excursions were always on time. Local tour guides were top-notch. The itinerary was thoughtfully planned and well balanced, providing just the right levels of activity and rest. Viking Alruna was only 15 weeks old when we sailed, and it was a delight to travel on such a young vessel. (The ship was kept spotless.)The trip was exceptional in every way, from meals to tours to accommodations to housekeeping. When we planned this trip, we thought it would be the trip of a lifetime, and it was. However, we had such a wonderful time that we hope to be able to cruise again with Viking! Read Less

I had read that Viking had been in this business of river cruising for a long time. They had new ships coming on line in 2016 which I did not know but was informed of by my travel consultant at Viking. He suggested I move my embarkation day back one and I would be on a brand new boat. I did and was extremely pleased with the whole cruise. Service was exemplary, the food was more than adequate and quite delicious and the accommodations very comfortable. The included land tours were well organized with locals doing the narration and the optional ones in the afternoon of which we picked 3 also interesting. The staff was exceptional with service and pleasing the client number one on their list. Friendly and accomodating and filling your requests with a smile. I would recommend this company with no reservation. First class in all areas: accommodation, vessel, tours, entertainment and service. Read Less

Our first Viking cruise and definitely not our last... everything was impeccable, from being met at the airport when we landed to the service on board, the food, the wine, the crew... We were on the Alruna, which was a brand new ship and although we heard of a couple of incidents involving the plumbing for the fire suppression system, we were not affected by either of them. We chose a cabin with balcony... probably won't in the future as it would give us a valuable extra couple of feet of space in the room and frankly we weren't on it that often. As I said above, the food was amazing and the wines were superb. We chose to take the upgraded beverage package and it was well worth it. As a certified sommelier, the rest of our travelling group relied on me to choose the wines for our meals and the list did not disappoint. The on-board entertainment was relaxing and non-intrusive. The excursions were the perfect length and presented the perfect amount of information on the city being visited. The only optional excursion we chose was the full day in Strasbourg and, while the description led us to believe that we would be accompanied by a chef and sommelier the entire day, that was not the case. The excursion itself was still thoroughly enjoyable and our tour guide was most informative. Read Less

We chose Viking from friends recommendations, and we liked that they published prices online without going through 'request a quote' delays. It was our honeymoon, and literally everything about the cruise was fantastic. The staff, from Nick our program director to the cleaning crews, were the best. The food, quantity and quality as well as quality wines, etc. we're all top quality. We chose the upgrade for $150 each to include upgraded liquor for the week. That included top shelf cognac bourbon and an array of the best alcoholic beverages. The view of castles and the wine country along the Rhine were breathtaking. We very much enjoyed the tours in various cities including Heidelburg and Cologne. We give the Viking organization the highest rating in every aspect, and we both really couldn't come up with any suggestions that could have improved our 'over the top' experience. Set sail on the day of our 50th anniversary. Never taken a river cruise before so we really didn't have any expectations. If we would have had any expectations, I am sure they were exceeded. The ship was great, our stateroom was ideal, the crew couldn't have been friendlier and more helpful and our shipmates were a pleasant and friendly group of people. Food was first rate, and there was plenty of it. Wines with meal were good. Shore excursions included with the cruise were both fun and educational, with the tour guides both informative and pleasant. Looking for negatives, we personally would have liked to do more daytime sailing, but the ship sailed mostly overnight so that more shore excursions could be included. A word about the stateroom: It lived bigger than its actual size because everything in it was so well designed. Two people could it in it and converse with neither having to sit on the bed. Electrical outlets accommodated both standard US plugs and the European "Shuko" plugs. Toilet amenities were first class, and "extras" were no problem, as when I needed distilled water for my sleep apnea machine. Evening entertainment was diverse and fun, particularly because the program director worked so hard at making sure guests were entertained. Don't want to go overboard with praise, but this was really a great experience for us. Read Less

We had never been to Amsterdam, Holland and upon arrival we enjoyed walking around the city prior to the cruise. The highlight of our city excursions was visiting the Anne Frank House. We were glad that Viking told us to purchase tickets before we came or we would not have been able to see the house. We also visited the Van Gough Art Museum and the Science Museum. Additionally, we took a canal boat trip tour of the city that was informative. Our hotel was within about a mile of the downtown area and we were able to walk to the main transportation hub where we caught trollies to various sights. We had seen the Viking cruises in TV commercials and we were very anxious to experience the trip down the Rhine. The trip exceeded our expectations. The crew director was from Ireland and had an excellent sense of humor and he made the trip fun. My wife is vegan and gluten-free and the Chef went out of his way to prepare special meals for her. We felt the crew was very attentive to our needs and extremely polite. It was fun to hear the Cruise Director describe the castles on the Rhine and also to visit some of them during the trip. I particularly enjoyed the optional trip to the Mercedes Benz factory. Read Less

Well traveled friends of ours highly recommended this cruise, particularly on the Viking Cruise Line. We chose the Rhine River cruise specifically because of family heritage in the Alsace region. In summary, we found the entire experience to be absolutely first class in the truest sense of the word. In our trip preparations, it was particularly satisfying to be able to contact Viking personnel very efficiently and always got definitive responses to our questions. The personnel onboard the Viking Alruna were extremely helpful and friendly in every way which made the excursion that much more enjoyable. The efficiency with which the tours were organized was to say the least quite astounding. Our stateroom was surprisingly spacious, the food and service were always superb. We rank this trip among the very best that we have done in a lifetime of travel. While it was quite fascinating and enriching to visit windmills, castles, and cathedrals, the bottom line was it was all about the river and the boat. We were not home more than one week and we started dreaming about another Viking European river cruise in the future. Read Less

This cruise was a surprise 'Birthday Cruise' for a friend. 10 friends 'appeared' in the Viking Lounge on the first day and surprised my friend. The Viking crew went out of their way to make this cruise special for all of us. The cruise itself was memorable in every possible way. Cruising up the Rhine is one of the greatest experiences a person can witness. As usual, the meals were outstanding. We did the Lucerne extension which only added more to our unforgettable vacation cruise. I highly recommend Viking to everyone I talk to. This was our 4th cruise with Viking. I wish there were more rivers that their Longships sailed! We would be on them. Hail Viking! We have previously done the Danube cruise, the Windmills and Tulips cruise, and the Elegant Elbe cruise. The first two was fantastic. However, the ship on the Elbe was an older one and too small. That cruise was a disappointment for us - however, Viking still is the best! Read Less

We had never been to Switzerland, Germany, or the Netherlands. We chose Viking based on recommendations from friends. All aspects greatly exceeded our expectations. Of special note were our extension in Lucerne, our excursion there including Lake Lucerne, tram to Mount Pilates, visit to Swiss dairy and cheese making. Worth every penny! The accomodations, food, and service were outstanding. One tip: traveling from Basel to Amsterdam is preferred because you travel with the river current allowing more time at each port. We were very impressed how diligent the staff was to accommodate our every request. The first evening, we ordered rack of lamb but it was very popular and the kitchen ran out. The chef came to our table to apologize and offered to make it for us the next day. It was the best lamb I have ever eaten! Another plus was the effort for us be in the same tour group with new friends we met on the cruise. Also the staff efforts to add us to excursions we had not booked. We were so impressed with Viking that we have book an ocean cruise of the Mediterranean. We also became best friends with a couple on the river cruise and will travel together on the next cruise. The tours couldn't be better! The local guidea were outstanding and informative! Food and all accomadations were the best. We are ready to go again! All went smoothly from beginning to end! Our trip required all passengers to be a minimum of 16 years old. We had a few younger ones but it was mostly seniors. I liked the sliding glass doors on the balcony that allowed one to see the landscape. The bed was very comfortable and room service was great. The evening entertainment was fun, glass-blowing demonstration, classical music, dancing, games for all. With only about 188 passengers on the cruise, the staff knew us by name and were friendly, professional and courteous. Travel was smooth on the River. Our staterooms were very comfortable, modern, and kept immaculate by the staff. I VERY HIGHLY recommend Viking for any river cruise you wish to take. On our previous Viking River Cruise we met another couple with whom we became good friends. Over the years, we have stayed close and even visited each others distant homes several times. Finally, we made good on our promises to each other and we sailed Viking together again! This time we chose the Rhine, from Amsterdam to Basel. Upon arrival the Amsterdam port was crowded beyond capacity, so our Longship was berthed at a location just outside of the main city. No problem. Viking made certain that a constant flight of shuttles and guides were ready to take us to and from the city center for exploration. We noticed on the first night that our stateroom was impeccably kept and clean - just like it was on our last cruise. The dining, if anything, was even a bit better than before, with an ever changing menu of local cuisines and exceptional service. Toward the end of the cruise we were all given a tour of the clean, efficient galley. It's just incredible that such a relatively small space can consistently produce such variety and quality. A big advantage of the Viking experience is that guests and crew really get to know each other. After a day or two our service staff began to anticipate and plan ahead for our needs and wishes. Clearly Viking has a special relationship with their crews and they are somehow able to recruit exceptional people with great hospitality skills and a cheerful sense of humor. The Rhine trip, from the windmills of Kinderdijk to the historic castles and canyon vineyards of Germany is an ever changing adventure of history and scenery. As we cruised, our cruise director provided us with cultural and historic background that would serve us upon our ground tours the next day. The tours were well organized with quality bus transportation when needed, and great local tour guides. We sometimes broke away to do our own thing when the mood and opportunity struck. As long as we were careful to note our ship's berth location and the times of departure we were free to explore on our own. The focus of Viking tours is to experience the local surroundings which we certainly did. Much of the actual cruising is done in the evening or late night while guests relax on-board. This gave our crew's social staff a chance to shine with special demonstrations of local cooking or art. Sometimes it was as simple as trivia contests over wine and cocktails. Our Social Director was a Brit with a previous career in stand-up comedy, and he was genuinely funny and engaging, encouraging shipboard camaraderie while challenging crew and guests alike to make the most of every moment. I'm sure there were a few unanticipated problems aboard as there would be with any cruise, but our crew handled everything so seamlessly we would hardly have noticed. This is why we do plan to sail again with Viking and we look forward to our next adventure! Read Less

My friend and I wanted to go on a river cruise and so after we got our husbands to agree we all decided that Viking was THE river cruise company so we chose them. We went to Amsterdam a day early and explored the city. That also gave us the opportunity to get accustomed to the time zone before we got on the ship, which I highly recommend. We took a nap in the afternoon and explored the city at night. We got to bed at a normal time and woke up refreshed and ready to start our cruise. Getting on the ship was super easy and we quickly settled into our stateroom. Because Viking sent us emails ahead of time, we had planned our entire vacation before we left home. We just sat back and enjoyed the journey. There was enough space in our room that we never felt closed in and sitting on the balcony at night was delightful. We found that with the ship being sized right, we were able to meet a lot of our fellow passengers and even though we had our best friends with us, we met many more people who we enjoyed spending time with. The shore excursions were led by people who knew their excursion area well. They were not with the ship but people who were actually living in that town and knew it very well. Because we planned two years in advance we were able to pay for our cruise over time so that part was not a burden. We will never regret paying a little more for our cruise because Viking is definitely the way to go. The crew was amazing and the food was awesome. Since we've done the Rhine, we are looking at the Danube next. Read Less

The dates worked for us, and we've always wanted to see the Rhine. Friends highly recommended Viking and this route. We loved it. We loved the ease of travel (unpacking only once), the well-organized nature of the shore excursions, the amazing food, and the even more amazing staff. Did I mention the meals? Well, let me reiterate: the variety of menu choices, the excellent wine and beer, and the first-rate service made mealtimes a delight. The ship was comfortable and well-appointed, and the service was superb. We are already planning our next Viking River cruise. We are not "big cruise ship" people, but the Viking River cruises are the perfect size. We met interesting people with similar interests, and our tour director was delightful and full of knowledge about the region. Our guides on the shore excursions were similarly well-prepared. Highlights for us included Strasbourg--a gorgeous city, Heidelburg, the Black Forest, and the behind-the-scenes tour of the kitchen. How do they feed all those people in that tiny galley. Our only regret was that we didn't spend an extra night or two in Basel at the end of the trip. Read Less
