I choose Viking for my first river cruise because I'd heard so many great things about them, and because they are the biggest and best organized of the river cruise lines. I went in with high hopes, and they were exceeded in every way. From being picked up at the airport and taken to our hotel in Lucerne for our pre-cruise extension, to the last day in Amsterdam, every detail was taken care of and managed to The ship was sparkling and new, the cabin was comfortable and well-appointed. I was glad we'd picked the second-floor even-numbered room because it faced the water when we were docked. The food was excellent. All staff were attentive, friendly and extremely helpful. But what we really came for were the shore excursions. Starting with our pre-cruise extension in Lucerne and going all the way to our post-cruise stay in Amsterdam, every excursion, whether the included ones or the optional extras, was well-planned and well guided. The guides and the bus drivers were all excellent. I can't wait to go on another Viking cruise. Read Less

We wanted to have a bit of time in Luzern,Switzerland so we scheduled the pre trip option. The tours were excellent and it is one of the most beautiful towns I have ever seen. We were interested in the stops listed on our way to Amsterdam. Beautiful Alsation villages and historical German villages. The castles were amazing. It was a beautiful trip and we enjoyed it all. Great service was provided on the boat from the Manager down to the servers at the restaurant; informative guides and tours were provided at each stop or we could explore the area on our own. The food was excellent and the wine provided enjoyable.. The Chef provided several choices for an entree per day. You also had the option to eat a more casual meal in the lounge/deck area instead of the main restaurant area. . The deck area was lovely to sit and cruise the beautiful river with a putting green and the chef's herb garden. Read Less

We've been on 2 other Viking cruises and loved both - the Romantic Danube & Portraits of Southern France (even though our ship was disabled on our 3rd port & stuck there for the remainder of the cruise- they did everything in their power to make the best of the situation along with giving us a credit of 20% towards another cruise). Service and staff are excellent, food prepared perfectly and if you want to try 2 entree's, you can. There's no shortage of choices- if you have any food allergies or food restrictions of any kind, your waiter relays this info and meals are prepared accordingly. Accommodations are clean & smartly designed, locations are beautiful with daily itinerary literature waiting for you in your cabins along with interesting facts and history of your destinations . Guides are well spoken, knowledgeable, some being quite funny & entertaining. I will definitely continue using Viking as long as they hold to their standards & prices. Though we haven't tried other river cruise companies, so truthfully we cannot compare, we feel very comfortable using Viking again...why change when you're completely satisfied with a company? We have always wanted to take a river cruise through Europe and selected Viking based on the recommendation of close friends we had cruised with before. I must say we were more than pleased with every aspect of our experience. We found every member of the Viking team we encountered, from reservations to arrival and throughout the cruise, including the shore excursion guides, to be true hospitality professionals committed to ensuring a memorable experience for all. Our cabin was comfortable and immaculately clean (though the bathroom shower was a bit tight). As career hospitality exec, I understand and appreciate what it takes to train young folks from all over the world to deliver exceptional service and in my opinion, only a few organizations do it as well as Viking River Cruises. It is the personal touches that really sets Viking apart. The entire staff was quick to learn not only our names, but also remembered our dining preferences, sharing their knowledge of the region's wines and the best pairings with the evening's entrees. My wife enjoys relaxing with a cup of tea in the cabin before retiring at night which our cabin attendant recognized on our first night out. Every night thereafter we were treated to a fresh pot of hot water and a selection of teas waiting upon our return. I couldn't close without commenting on the shore excursion guides, who dazzled us with their knowledge and passion for their towns and countries each day. We have already booked another Viking River Cruise and are looking forward to exploring the towns along the Danube next spring. Read Less

I've been on three Viking cruises and this one had the best food. There was the usual Viking great customer service. The tours that came with the trip were good. Our guide at the dutch mills was poor, which is unusual for Viking guides. Others were the far-above-average quality that we expect from Viking. This tour was less attractive to some because a large amount of the tour went through industrial areas - more time than would be expected by watching the advertising which focuses on castles, of course. The hotel manager was entertaining and her communication skills were excellent. The cruise director was amusing and communicated well also. All staff in the public positions were considerate and helpful. Staff behind-the-scenes must be as well, as all service aspects of the cruise went extremely well. The room was comfortable for the category purchased and it is a amazing that such a comfortable bathroom can be squeezed in a small space. Read Less

Having been to most of the cities before it was totally different to be on the water. Our accommodations were great and the serve was stellar. All the planned excursions were well worth and we could not have done better! Being able to Lang so near to the cities we stopped in was another plus and it was super easy to do our own exploration if we chose to.The ship was clean and kept immaculate, food was wonderfully prepared with detail to regions we were in. Having the predestination talks each day was very helpful and added to the enjoyment. It was great fun to gather with fellow travelers and talk about our day in the lounge. All in all it was an amazing time and we're anxious to do it again Read Less

This cruise was supposed to be shared with my husband of 40 years as my retirement gift. We had discussed a Viking tour but his passing ended the dream. As I thought about taking the trip for both of us, I was very tentative about traveling alone. When I decided to go, my anxiety ended the moment I disembarked in Switzerland and saw a welcome sign with my name. The hotel in Basel, the pick up in a luxurious bus to the Alruna, was the beginning of an incredible adventure with the most caring service by everyone on board, and the most delightful mix of people, many of whom have become my email and Facebook friends. Each day held new stunning views and sites to see, and each afternoon lunch, cocktail hour, and dinner with friends was memorable. As a woman traveling alone, I thought I might find myself taking meals in my cabin, or reading alone on deck. NOT the case if one is willing to reach out to a crew and fellow travelers. At the end of the week long trip, we were already making plans to see each other in other places. The entertaining host, Nick Hale, the captain, the hostess, the chef, each person on board the Alruna went to extraordinary lengths to see to my every need. My friend in Amsterdam was waiting for me at the dock, and as much as I was excited to be spending extra days with her, I was sad to be leaving my friends and family on the Alruna! Read Less

This was our first river cruise, although we have done several ocean cruises and have been to Europe several times on our own and with a tour..... this far exceeded any of our other European excursions. I particularly loved that we got off the ship daily (if we wanted to) to tour different towns and sites. The tour guides were very informative and the audio devices provided by the ship allowed us all to hear whether we were standing next to the guide or in the back of the group. I loved the fact that we could detour from the organized group to do our own excursions as long as we found our way back to the ship on time. Breakfast, lunch and dinner accommodated every guest with buffet and menus to select meals. Servers paid attention to detail and you never had to look for someone to refill your glass. Also the presentation was excellent. There was not one thing I would have changed throughout the cruise. We have already booked again this time with our friends and four new couples. Read Less

This was a WONDERFUL trip!! Chose this 8 day trip as a way to enjoy our first river cruise experience within the limitations of working people who don't have unlimited time. Viking and Uniworld were the two lines we were considering; Viking's price and it's support of PBS made us choose this cruise. Totally ecstatic with the experience! Every detail was seamlessly planned for ease, convenience and enjoyment. Every stop provided sights I couldn't have imagined (I had total ignorance of the wonders of the Rhine), The included tours were not 'cut rate' in any way, no sense that we would need to spend extra for additional tours -- although we did ultimately choose additional tours, because the 'basic tours' were so great! Wonderful Guides with each tour, which always helps; humorous, knowledgeable, friendly people. And wonderful locations! Beautiful, educational, historical, interesting! And the ship, the rooms, the food, the staff!!! All just wonderful! From management staff to each wait person, all were friendly, helpful, professional, ... just great! Offering gratuities at the end of this trip was a pleasure! The ship was beautiful, lounge, restaurant, decks, etc. Rooms super comfortable...great bed comfort. Appreciated the security measures aboard, to keep strangers off ship, and to protect us as Viking passengers. Very thoughtful, "casual' and easy to deal with, but thorough. The restaurant and lounge designed to get people visiting with each other, which was easy after taking tours together. We connected with several folks we enjoyed and looked forward to being with each day. And many were on this 8 day trip for the same reasons we were, still of working age, first river cruise try-out. Everyone we connected with agreed that the trip was better than expected on every level. Which means this was a REALLY good trip! Because of work schedule time constraints, we did not get to enjoy additional time at either our beginning or end city. Next time! After this first river cruise experience ... there will definitely be more! Read Less

A++++ all the way. The ship was extremely clean, even the buses we went on were great. The tour guides in each port were very knowledgable, friendly, and informative. Viking really cares for their passengers and they go out of their way to make the cruise the best you'll ever take. They have the best crew you'll ever meet. Our Rhine Getaway cruise was fantastic. We loved this cruise in every way. The staff and crew were great, especially Nick, our cruise director. The food was wonderful...breakfast, lunch, and dinner. All excursions were well organized, interesting, and varied from port to port. Rooms are small, but you don't do much more than sleep there anyway. We were blessed with beautiful spring weather so we were able to take advantage of the top deck every day. We enjoyed the entertainment every evening, again, especially Nick. There were four of us traveling together. One person was never able to tolerate an ocean cruise due to motion sickness, but this river cruise was not a problem. It has opened up a new world of travel for them. We are already planning another cruise with Viking in Fall of 2018, Viking does anything and everything to make their cruisers happy. We saw this from the moment we stepped on the boat and immediately met the captain, who was always friendly and very accessible. We also did the post-cruise extension in Amsterdam. Our hotel was perfectly located. After the included orientation walk around town, our location allowed us to walk around the city with no problems. Viking personnel were available in the lobby to help if needed. Read Less

From the moment we handed our luggage to Milos outside the ship our vacation was perfect. The team work was fabulous! Every crew member pitched in to make the cruise magical for everybody. Evelyn and her team from the front desk were great. JJ, a server assistant and bartender, showed us our room and from there we had a running joke that he is following us. Every time we turned a corner there he was, smiling at us and making sure we had everything we needed. Our server John was magical! He would remember our drink order, meat temperatures and breakfast items from the first time we step food in the restaurant. John and JJ created a dream team. The service they provided was 5 star European service and it was amazing. Our cruise director Nick was funny and considerate. We traveled with my 72 year old mother in law and Nick would go out of his way to make sure she would be able to do the excursions. He also helped locate souvenir spoons in various shops. Nick's guest service skills are amazing! The food ... Chef Mark Anthony and his team made the most tasty and delicious. Captain Bartosz had an open door policy for his wheelhouse and it was obvious that the entire crew respected him. Dejan, the Maitre D', and his team functioned perfectly and he was very hands on working side by side with the them. Read Less

My husband and I and brother and sister-in law took a lovely River Cruise down the Rhine on the Viking Ship Alruna. We certainly enjoyed the ship, the staff aboard and the wonderful food! We were in a lower deck cabin and was very roomy and certainly enjoyed the heated bathroom floor. We enjoyed all of the ports and shore excursions. We always looked forward to coming back on board: we were welcomed back so enthusiastically by the staff. Our weather was not the best, but the staff accommodated us with umbrellas and warm drinks whenever they could. It was a wonderful week!! Upon arrival in Amsterdam, the staff offered us a walking tour of Amsterdam that was quite unexpected and most appreciated. We chose this cruise because we had not been on a cruise in a long time and are not into the hug ships with thousands of people, we love the intimacy of the river ships. The itinerary was important, the ability to see so many wonderful things that we might never have experienced. There were 10 of us in our group and we all had such a wonderful time, making new friends and having a life of wonderful memories. Our cruise director Nick made the trip fun and he made the shore excursions exciting and interesting. For me the best day was Heidelberg , Nick helped me find the perfect spot the spread m mothers ashes. My parent met during WWII in Heidelberg, the were both in the Army, met & married there and my brother was born there, so mom came full circle. His wit and humor made our days. We had great wait staff especially at dinner. We choose this cruise for a couple reasons. The Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland were areas we wanted to see for their beauty and history. We were excited to see these places that have history and buildings dating back over a 1,000 years. We were excited to see and visit some of the Castles along the Rhine and to taste the local cuisine and to eat in a restaurant that has been serving patrons for over 500 years. We were excited to walk the streets where my ancestors came from! We were excited to visit the magical Black Forest. There was not one disappointing excursion on our cruise! The ship itself was a gem! It was just beautiful. Because the ship was only 200 or 300 passengers, we met a lot of different people at our meals. It was possible to get to know several other passengers and engage in lively conversation! The food was always plentiful and delicious. Service was impeccable. The dining was fun! Our entire cruise staff was awesome. Nick Hale, the Cruise Director, was always a perfect 10 in terms of his comedic and entertainment talents! He always had the entire group laughing and having fun. Our room was very, very nice. Plenty of room for everything. The bed was great, Loved the veranda! The amenities were also top notch. I would most definitely take a Viking Cruise again. I would love to take the one that sails on the Danube. Okay, honestly, I would like to take them all! You spend less time unpacking and packing as you would on a land tour. You spend more time in Ports, as you usually sail in the evening. The one day we had no excursions we sat on the top deck and sailed past beautiful towns and countryside and castles high atop the hills. The staff came up and served us hot cocoa with brandy to warm our spirits and our tummy's. Yummy! Read Less

The staff was amazing, things happened and you never saw it happen-such as your cabin being cleaned while at breakfast and the balcony wiped down, the "treat" awaiting after each outing and the list goes on.......Food allergies for me were accommodated in a most delicious fashion. A superb crew helped to make our trip down the Rhine wonderful. The excursions in France, Germany, and the Netherlands were most all interesting and the transportation and guides for these trips quite good. The boat had a relaxed vibe, and all meals had two options for dining--the main dining room, and the lounge upstairs. The main dining room had multiple entree options, different each day, while the lounge had a limited list of some lighter fare...but they were happy to bring you anything they had prepared in the galley. Both options were great, and the food was outstanding. In only a couple of days, it seemed some of the staff knew what we liked. We were on the lowest deck in the smallest class room, but it was well appointed and we spent very little time there. The bathroom was nice and functional, and the Internet and video service was not extensive, but just fine...we were not there to watch television and movies, after all. Read Less

She deserves recognition (if I only remembered her name!) My favorite tours were Kinderdijk (a network of windmills and flood management devices--both fun and instructive), Heidelberg (beautiful ruins of Heidelberg Castle with a view from the castle of the Neckar River Valley and all the red roofs. Make sure you stop at Gundel Bakery for outstanding pastries.) and Strasbourg (charming blend of French and German influences, Magnificent cathedral.) My wife and I were looking for a low-key, uncrowded boating tour, and while 6000 people on an ocean cruise was not our thing, we found exactly what we needed on river cruise with max 250 guests and crew on the Rhine. Although the crew on the Viking Alruna were very professional and serious about serving their guests with the highest quality, each member of the staff was fun, cheerful and friendly - from the hotel director, program director, chef, concierge, waiters and waitresses, all the way up to the room servers. Even the guides for the town and tour excursions were very professional and trained to provide the most interesting tours as they walked us through Strasbourg, Cologne, Heidelberg and the castles. Most of the guides were phd's or in a doctorate program. One pleasant surprise that we had not counted on was the beginning of several meaningful friendships. Conversation at each breakfast, lunch and dinner was very enjoyable. And even though there were many opportunities to talk and engage with other couples, my wife and I could sneak back into a corner and just have a quiet dinner or breakfast alone. The balance was perfect. We only took part in the included excursions, giving us a nice balance of touring and just walking the towns. Read Less

Literally spent $53 on board our cruise from Basel to Amsterdam and we lacked for nothing. We could not have asked for a more relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. The daily tours were educational as well as entertaining. You could experience them or stay on the boat. It was totally up to you. The night time entertainment was unexpected and quite good. Really enjoyed the German night especially since we were on the Rhine and the trivia nights were great fun. It was also very interesting to see how the boats maneuvered in and out of the locks. Met a lot of interesting and fun people. With only 120 guests, it was easy to get to recognize if not talk to everyone. Thoroughly enjoyed our time spent on Alruna. The ship was adequate in size and mostly quite comfortable. Compared to our other cruises on Windstar, the cabin was about the same, food was comparable, and the number of passengers greater. Amenities on the ship were a little sparse, ie. no exercise room, casino, ship's store, etc. compared to small ones on Windstar. The included onshore excursions were great and the days we opted to just walk around on our own, there was plenty to do and see. (We even stumbled upon a Wine Festival. It would have been nice to know ahead of time - samples were given out to those who had glasses - , but the focus was always on the excursions and that day both excursions were extra.) Entertainment on the ship was educational and interesting. The main complaint was that the tipping was not included and needed to be done in Euros. (On Windstar it was comprehensive and tips were only given for special services.) We had great service in Basel during our pre-cruise stay and Kia advised us to go to Luzern instead of going on the walking tour since we would have another prior to departure and it was going to be very hot. Her information about everything was excellent. The provided mobility ticket for the trams made the stay even better! The second night was pretty noisy because of a street fair, but otherwise accommodations were great. In Amsterdam, we also stayed an extra two days, taking the Haarlem trip (extra) which was very enjoyable. Our tour guide in Amsterdam was also very good. Read Less

Our flight arrangements were taken care of by Viking from out of Toronto to Amstrerdam and the cost of the flight was very low. We arrived in Amsterdam earlier than our river cruise departure date, so we had a few days to explore the city and relax after the long flight from Canada. Getting aboard the river cruise was very easy and comfortable as the staff welcomed us and took our luggage on board. The cabin was on the main level just a wee smaller than the river cruise cabin we experienced in China with another company, but everything was new. Our cruiser began its life in April of 2016 so you know everything was working when we got on board. The dining was so enjoyable lots of variety and and plenty to go around , please note if your on a diet too bad. Entertainment came from different sources and different cities, from local singers at the ports we stopped or local experts on the a variety of subjects. Our staff kept the room in top shape and our excurisons were very interesting. We are seniors and do travel on at least three trips per year. Our children are grown and they have children, however we had not travelled with them on this occasion.
