We attended a Viking Cruise seminar through AAA. Got a great deal, so decided to do a once in a lifetime river cruise. Taking an early extension, we arrived in Basel, Switzerland early. The Viking Cruise guide there, Julia, was awesome. Viking set us up at The Swissotel. It was a great place, and the service was on time and helpful. The Viking tour guide, Julia, haver an office in the hotel which was great. She was awesome! Julia took us on a walking tour through Basel that was informative and enjoyable. She also gave us information that made our visit to Basel, restaurants, places to see, etc, that enhanced our visit. After boarding the long-ship, the trip really got exciting. The Captain and crew of the Alruna were the best I have ever cruised with. They could not say no! My wife and I have cruised 5 times on ocean going vessels. The excursions were well planned and conducted. At night, in a quaint and personable setting, the cruise director briefed us for the next days events. No videos or large crowds. This really prepared us for a enjoyable time in the port of call. It was like taking a cruise on ship with the advantages of a land tour. The food was delicious and reflected each region that we passed through. My favorite however, was the Lumpia served by the Head Chef. Great meal! You told the wait staff what you wanted, and they did their very best to get it for you. Did I say they could not say no? The city tours were great. We really enjoyed Heidelberg, Strasbourg, The Black Forest, and Kinderdyk, Netherlands. All were great, these were our favorites--to include the trip to the Colmar Pocket. As an American, I was so proud to visit where American troops fought valiantly to preserve our freedom. The have a great little museum in Colmar. Finally, we stayed at the Ink Hotel in Amsterdam. By far, the best hotel I have ever stayed in. I am a former career military officer and have never stayed in a hotel as good as the Ink. We are looking at trying to make another river cruise with Viking. It doesn't get any better than this. It was my wife, two other couples, and myself. There were older children on the cruise, but due to the time of year, it was mostly adults. Obviously, I am ready to go again. Read Less

We wanted to do a Viking Cruise ever since we saw commercials on Downton Abbey. We decided on a 7-day Rhine River cruise from Basel to Amsterdam with an extension in Amsterdam. We went on many extra excursions and everything, from the moment we landed in Basel to the moment we left Amsterdam, was perfectly coordinated. We had exclusive access on some of the tours and felt completely relaxed that Viking would handle everything. Even during the extension in Amsterdam, there was a Viking rep in the hotel to answer all our questions and coordinate the tours we booked during the extension. Our 40th Wedding anniversary was the day we arrived in Amsterdam. The night before, we were celebrated on board and they even remembered after we disembarked and had a lovely anniversary greeting and surprise in our hotel room. The tours were always more then expected and were expertly lead by local guides or even the Ship's Hotel Manager herself. There were fewer than 200 guests so we got to know our fellow passengers as well as the crew. The meals were great and included beer and wine for lunch and dinner. Every dinner included local traditional fare and the after-dinner entertainment was fun and engaging. There was no one under 40 but you would not believe how the crazy us older folks can get when doing the chicken dance. The Viking experience cannot be compared to other cruises. We have cruised with Norwegian and Carnival. The focus on those trips was obviously to spend as much time and money as possible on the ship with ridiculous alcohol charges, casinos and, oh, by-the-way, there are these excursions that also cost a fortune. The focus on Viking is to expose you to local life and history. You are supposed to get off the ship and learn about the places you are visiting. They even have on-board presentations and performers demonstrating local costumes, customs and foods. All-in-all, our first Viking cruise was the best vacation of our lives (and we have 2 timeshares and travel a lot). We intend to never cruise with anyone else ever again. And, with the huge and growing group of Viking ocean-going ships, we won't have to. Read Less

My husband and I choose Viking because of the great reviews from friends and PBS. We had never taken a river cruise before but will do it again. There were so many wonderful experiences that contribute to us sailing Viking again. I believe the Alruna is a beautiful ship because of its beautiful staff and crew and the homey, comfortable feeling you have on board. The staff really set the stage from the very beginning by making everyone feel welcome and special. Evelyn Kolditz, Hotel Manager, went above and beyond to make sure we felt like the only ones on the cruise. Ivan, Program Director, did a great job of including everyone in all activities and shared valuable information about every port. The bar staff, Will, Albert, Margarita have the perfect personality for their profession. They were attentive to everyone’s needs and wants. They knew what you wanted before you did. The restaurant staff were also very attentive Marislov, Peter, Yavor really stood out and were always very friendly. Then there is Judy, Queen Omoletta, her energy and spirit were contagious and she made dining up stairs an event every night. The food was extremely good at every meal. The cabin staff were like invisible fairies that wave a wand and everything is in it’s place. Some of the included shore excursions were a lot of driving for very little time. They were great once we got there but too much time spent on the bus. For the most part the local guides were good but Dana Ackerman in Heidelberg was exceptionally good. She was exited about sharing her knowledge which made the guests excited to hear it. She was happy and not rushed. On the other hand Heidi in Strausborg took our group through other Viking groups getting us confused on which group people were in, very frustrating. It seemed she didn’t have good people skills. I don’t remember the name of our guide at Marksburg Castle but he was with group B 45, he would give his information like a tape recorder ask if there where questions and then moved on. I felt he didn’t want to be there and the group could feel that attitude. I did the Alsace wine tasting at Albert Seltz. There seemed to be some confusion when we arrived. The wine maker wasn’t even there and we had to wait for him to arrive. There were elderly couples that had to stand for quite a while and were very uncomfortable. Then Albert rushed through the wine making process like he was annoyed we were there. We only tasted 4 wines and then he rushed us out of there like he had some place to be. It was not worth 79$. The musician on board was sweet, Stephan. As a musician I felt he could have had more diversity in his styles or even do theme nights. I felt he didn’t cater well to the older crowd. They need Frank, Dean, Tony, Elle, Sammy, Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney for example. Stephan is a very talented musician and pianist. The special guests on board were great as well. Evelyn told me to be very specific so I was. I want it to be contructive not complaining. I enjoyed every minute on board and felt the guests on the cruise were all having a fantastic time. Everyone got to know each other and mingled well. I never heard one guest complain about anything on board. I truly believe that is due to a staff that is cohesive and managed well and enjoys their job which transfers to the guests. I will cruise Viking again! Read Less

When my daughter and I arrived we were pleased with the organization and smoothness of our embarkation with Viking Cruise. Previous reviews and especially the agent we contacted for the Rhine River Cruise offered by Viking Cruises was very helpful and sincere. We trusted his sincerity in the company, believed, and booked. The dinning atmosphere and foods were relaxing and enjoyable. The Alruna shipcrew and Captain made this cruise very memorable and would do again. The timing and cost of this cruise ideally coincided with our travel plans. The crew, especially the staff were helpful and accommodating. All of our added excursions were insightful in understanding the history and culture of this area. If you appreciate World War II; the Audie Murhpy Memorial is a must. Activities and enthusiasm of the Alruna staff and crew was contagious. We have been taking ocean cruises for some time and on our last cruise decided we wanted to try something different, so went with a river cruise. We use a travel professional to book our travel, and after discussing our interests came up with the Rhine Getaway. It was fabulous! Outstanding accommodations, food, and shore excursions. The on-board educational activities were both fun and informing. A great mix of time to relax and to explore new countries. Our flight arrived 90 minutes early - 5:30 a.m. - but there were Viking staff at the airport who got us on a bus to the dock and we were on our ship by 6:30 a.m. Had a nice breakfast and then took the opportunity to spend some extra time in Amsterdam. We returned to the ship late morning and our room was already prepared and our luggage delivered, a very pleasant and unexpected surprise. Gave us time to clean up and catch our breath before lunch and a couple of afternoon tours. Viking makes your travels so simple. Ground transportation to/from the airport/port was efficient and comfortable, all the ship staff took time to get to know us and many were calling us by name within a day or two. Each on-shore excursion had a professional guide, and each guide was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English, as well as at least 1 other language. We're definitely planning another Viking river cruise, next time likely a longer cruise to a different part of Europe that we haven't been to before. Read Less

We are a group of 8 who have traveled together on land tours, but this was our first river cruise, and was a complete delight! The Alruna is a relatively new ship, and beautiful from stem to stern. The long ships are quite simply laid out, you have essentially three decks to hold the staterooms, a lounge and a dining room, and the sun deck for lounging and enjoying the scenery when sailing during the day. We had classic central European fall weather, mainly cool with occasional rain, so we didn't have much chance to sit on the sun deck except for a day in which we sailed by several castles, and it was absolutely fabulous. We chose to tack on two days in Amsterdam at the start of the trip, which was a doubly good idea, as it gave us more time to explore the city and enjoy the night life, and at the same time shake off any jet lag before beginning the actual cruise. When we arrived in Amsterdam we were greeted by Viking agents, who led us to a limousine to take us to our hotel (Amsterdam Renaissance). It was pouring rain and a fair piece to the hotel, during which our driver regaled us with the history and anecdotes about the city. Once at the hotel we met with other agents who helped us plan out our city tours and activities, and one of them (Iris) led us on a walking tour of the city on the second day. All the agents were friendly, helpful, and entertaining! Iris was the best! We walked to the ship from our hotel, which tells you how convenient river cruising is compared to the experience on ocean cruises. Processing was like checking into a hotel! On board the ship, the experience is relaxing and fun, while including some education for you about the areas you are passing through and stopping at. Meals vary from day to day, following the local cuisine, although if you wish you can always get a steak or a chicken dish. The menu is limited in comparison to big ocean liners, but found them more than adequate in choices, and complete with beer and wine. Speaking of which, Viking has probably the best drinks package of any line we have traveled on. Each stop has an excursion that is included (usually a city walking tour) and a few optional ones. The guides were all top-notch, very knowledgeable, and equally amusing. Viking provides each guest with a "quiet stick", which is a small receiver and earphones. The guide uses a similar looking transmitter, so you are able to hear clearly everything they say without having to run to be at the front of the crowd. One feature of their organizing the excursions is for people who are limited in their mobility (not necessarily handicapped, but travel a bit more slowly than most), Viking organizes separate groups to accommodate them without missing any of the highlights of the tour. One excursion you don't want to miss is the "Taste of Alsace" in Strasbourg. It is a walking tour of the city, during which you stop at various shops where you taste (and may purchase), breads, cheeses, cured meats, pastries, etc, ending up in a wine shop where you have a "picnic" of the items the guide has collected, and glasses of Alsatian wines from the shop. Be sure to book early, it is limited! Another feature of Viking's attention to detail for excursions is they provide you with an excellent small city map (not the sort of map the big liners provide showing you where the Diamonds International are), and a business card with information in the local language on your ship and where it is located, and phone numbers to contact it or Viking. If you should happen to get lost or are delayed in returning to the ship, you can show the card to, say, a cab driver or policeman, and they can help get you back to the ship in time for sailing! As I said, this was our first river cruise with Viking, but it will certainly not be the last. In fact, our group has already booked for a Danube cruise in 2018, with the two-day stay in Prague tacked on to the beginning of the trip. This was another last-minute decision, and guess what, we will be back in "steerage" again, but who cares! Read Less

Very impressed with all the staff, from our hotel manager to bar tenders to chef. The food and dining experience was wonderful & we loved the Muesli at breakfast. A simple embarkation in Amsterdam, and after a day of flying from Dallas, it was so nice to be able to get on board right away to freshen up and have a light snack. Every port was just as easy and stress-free, Viking offers plenty of opportunity to explore with guides or on your own with the comfort of knowing you can get back to ship quickly by way of their shuttle buses. The included excursions were all absolutely worthwhile, with personable and knowledgeable guides and experiences you cannot get elsewhere. I can't say enough about this cruise. My grandmother and I went together, and we both had the most wonderful time. We continue to discuss it with every phone call, although it has been a number of months! We did not stay in Basel before our trip as we were fortunate enough to have relatives in the area so we stayed with them, and visited Biel, Bern, and Gruyuere. We heard on other cruises that this was one of the most scenic cruises ..and they were right. They have made the embarkation and the disembarkation process very smooth and easy One wish that I do have is that you could get more information on your day to day itinerary before you get on your cruise. The cabins are comfortable, the beds are too and if you need a different pillow or a topper for the bed just ask. the bathrooms have more room than bigger cruise lines. The food was great and the on board entertainment and cultural experiences were spot on. We had exceptional cruise director N. Hale very knowledgeable and entertainer extraordinare. Everyone was very helpful and nice, the hotel manger saw to our every need. Be prepared though on this trip there was a lot of walking..not necessarily on the excursions but to and from the ship to get to the buses. But if you needed extra assistance our cruise director went out of his way to try and accommodate you. Even if it was hiring taxis to get you to the buses..for the few who really needed it. Oh! There is also an elevator on board .not a big one but enough for a wheel chair or motorized chair. The wait staff at breakfast and dinner by the second day knew who we were and already knew what we liked wether it was who liked OJ or coffee or tea or water or wine..I find that amazing..the best part for me was I got to celebrate the taste of Germany night on my birthday. I hope this review will help you decide to take one of Viking's Cruises this was our 3rd. You will also notice all the little extras they do for you..be surprised.. Read Less

This was our fourth Viking River cruise, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Viking now uses its own fleet of buses which are much more comfortable than local tour buses. Also, the restrooms work, which is a big problem on local tour buses. One complaint...our cabin was on the starboard side, and the ship tied up with the starboard side facing the pier about 80% of the time. No idea why. We booked this tour to see the rivers, not the shoreline. Some other people on the cruise complained that the noise and vibration in the aft cabins was very disturbing. Walked back aft one evening while underway, and the vibration was very strong. Definitely want to be in the forward part of the ship. Rating system at the end of the cruise was very confusing. Ratings were "Met expectations" and "Exceeded expectations". This was our fourth Viking Cruise, and we have very high expectations because of our prior experience. Not sure it was possible or feasible to exceed our very high expectations. Read Less

This is our 2nd Viking river cruise. We got a voucher from our first Viking cruise in Southern France as the A/C on that boat broke down in 100 degree heat for 3 days. Anyway, I recommend the Basel to Amsterdam route as you are going with the river current and have more time docked. We had a room on the right side (starboard and odd numbered) and I would recommend having one on the left (port and even numbered) side as it will face out into the river more than into the river bank or dock. The boat was still spotless and the crew generally fabulous as is the Viking standard. The passengers were about 98% elderly, white Americans. Most were retirees, but this crowd was actually younger than the crowd on the other cruise. There was 1 couple from Australia. A few minor quibbles. The pianist in the lounge was not up to the task and played without feeling. One night, a classical duo (harp & violin) played and that was lovely. Another night, we heard that the group entertaining started off singing "Welcome" from Cabaret, it being Germany and all. Unfortunately, we had people on the boat who had just come from a pre-cruise visit to a holocaust site where their relatives perished, so that was a bad choice of songs. The food, while good and plentiful, was just not quite as flavorful as we like. Still it was very good and pleasing. The included tours of the cities were generally very good with the exception being the tour in Basel. The guide was just not very good. The Optional tour "Taste of Alsace" in Strausbourg was great, but long at 5+ hours. I have a fitness tracker that logged over 5 miles on the tour. There was a guy on the tour who had just had knee replacements and he was hurting by the time it was over. The optional tour "Dinner in Reinhaus" or something like that, was essentially a German version of a Hawaiian hotel luau complete with audience drinking games and oompah band. Very low class. It advertised a "miniature train" trip to the location that turned out to be one of those tractor driven trams that you see in amusement parks and fairs with an "engine" and a couple of cars hooked up behind it. Not up to Viking's standards. The optional tour to the Black Forest and Kohlmar was great. The open air museum was amazing. Too bad it was the 2nd day and we were still jet lagged and slept on the bus so we didn't see much of the black forest. We had good weather, sunny, but mild, but the week before, we heard it was very hot and rained all week, so be prepared. Read Less

This was my third river cruise, but my first with Viking, and it could not have been a better experience. The crew on this ship has to be the best on any European river, from the personable and approachable captain to the cleaning staff and restaurant crew. Common areas and rooms were spotless and well maintained, food was excellent and the scenery and excursions were just wonderful. Much of the credit for how much we enjoyed this trip has to go to Evelyn (the hotel manager) and Nick (the entertainment director). Their energy and work ethic were amazing and they created a wonderful team out of the entire crew. I would sail with this group any time and on any river! The only negative comments I have relate to the embarkation/disembarkation process. We had travelled on our own in Switzerland before joining the ship in Basel, so did not have the advantage of a Viking transfer to the ship. The Basel port was fairly far away from the city center and difficult to get to, especially because of the road construction nearby which kept us from being able to have direct access to the ship. Disembarkation in Amsterdam was also difficult because we were docked behind another ship and had trouble getting through that ship to retrieve our luggage. No reflection on the cruise or crew, however! Read Less

We selected this cruise because we had not been to this area and we had heard many great things about Viking. We went with our best friends and stayed in rooms with verandas. While the rooms were small, they were well planned with good storage. We loved that the whole ship has floor to ceiling windows. Every minute included views and they were beautiful. There were often swans floating below our balconies. I worried that we would be surrounded by other river boats but that was not the case. Though the river has commercial traffic, cruise lines seem to have done a good job of timing ships so views are largely unobstructed. The number of people onboard is much more manageable than on ocean cruises. I broke my shoulder the day before the cruise on the busy streets of Amsterdam. We decided to continue and the staff of the Alruna could not have been nicer and more thoughtful. We thought the entire staff was wonderful especially our cruise director, Nick. He was hard working, funny and always making sure things were smooth, safe and fun. The only thing we would change was the dinner arrangement. Everyone eats at 7 and tables are for 6 or 8 only. While this is fun, we would have liked some nights to eat as a foursome without having to work to make conversation in a crowded room. The food and the service was excellent. We loved all the stops particularly Heidelberg, Colmar and Strausburg. Read Less

You could sight-see by yourself or with a tour guide. All the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. Viking goes out of its way to make you comfortable both while you are on the ship or on an excursion. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we liked Viking's prices, the low cost of airfare and the route of the cruise (Amsterdam to Basel.) The ship was beautiful and exceptionally clean. The meals were delicious without being huge; especially dinner. Breakfast was a choice of a buffet or a la carte. The staff was not only friendly, they were a lot of fun. Our room steward was wonderful and kept our room neat and clean all the time Our cabin was the same size as the cabins we have had on the larger cruise ships. We really enjoyed the balcony The shore excursions that were complimentary on our trip were excellent! They were so good that we didn't see the need to pay for any additional or alternative excursions. Finally, the only part of the cruise that came up a little short was the entertainment. The entertainer they had in the lounge was an outstanding pianist, but had a very average voice. Read Less

This was our first riverboat cruise, and we decided to begin with the Rhine. This cruise was a good fit for our schedule, and we couldn't have made a better choice. The weather was sunny and beautiful every day, and I know we were incredibly lucky. The ship and our room were great - fully meeting our needs and expectations. We did many of the included excursions and some of the extras as well. The Vox speaker system worked very well. We appreciated being able to hear all of our guides, and the system was very portable and easy to use. The excursions were great and enabled us to learn about highlights of the countries we visited. The food, the chefs, and the dining room wait staff were terrific. It was fun to have open seating to be able to meet many of our fellow travelers. After dinner planned events were fun. The afternoon spent cruising the Middle Rhine was a highlight. We were blessed with terrific weather - blue sky and abundant sun. The trips through the locks were very interesting and provided totally new experiences for us. Our program director was delightful and so much fun. Hearing from the captain each evening as well as the head chef and wine steward provided a preview of our evening meal. All in all - a fabulous week. We're thinking about where to go next on a Viking riverboat. Read Less

We enjoyed our Danube cruise the year before and thought the Rhine one would be a good one too. I travel with my sister and this is our second Viking trip but our 4th European trip together. The service on Viking cruises is wonderful, the food great and the excursions have something for everyone. The castle in Heidleburg was very interesting and we had a young college student that majored in history that was very knowledgeable about the castle which gave us a lot of insight into the history of it. My sister was not able to do the Marksburg Castle because it was too strenuous and we felt it should not be the included excursion for that day. We plan to do another Viking cruise if my sister's health permits. We are thinking about the Elbe cruise or perhaps the Russia one. We are not that interested in the ocean ones as yet but perhaps at a later date. Read Less

We have been to Germany many times, and visited many of the places covered by the cruise. But we never experienced these sites from the river, and experiencing the middle Rhine with its castles, etc was marvelous. This was our 3rd Viking cruise, and it met/exceeded all expectations. One tip: Book the Lucerne extension and try to get the PALACE HOTEL, we had a great room with view of the lake. The Pearls of Switzerland Shore Excursion was an all-day tour with an excellent guide. We took a mix of included and optional tours, and each one was both entertaining and educational with local guides who added a personal touch to the tours. Another feature we love about Viking is Viking Air which allows you for a small fee to extend your stay, even changing the standard departure air port. How pleased we are with Viking is the fact that we are already booked for "Miami into the Amazon" next year. Read Less
