To enjoy the flavor of France plus visit Normandy. The staff was fantastic and the ship was on the maiden voyage. It had every amenity that made the trip worry free. The food was delicious and I enjoyed being able to sample so many of the local wines at lunch and dinner. Everything was clean and tidy. The staff assisted us in special excursions like a meal at the oldest restaurant in Europe and first class tickets to the top of the Eiffel Tower. We had ample time for shopping at each city and enjoyed the special Boutiques along the way. We went to the homes of great artists like Van Gogh and Monet, learning about their incredible lives and influence on the world of Impressionism and still art. I loved the tours of Paris and Normandy, which satisfied my love of old world and post WWII history. The tour gave us choices to visit memorable places, which included a fabulous trip to Versailles. I also had the opportunity to meet and talk with many interesting people aboard our ship. This trip was a very memorable one! Read Less

The ship is beautiful and even my economy cabin was VERY comfortable. The staff was very friendly and helpful at every turn. The food and the service was GREAT!!! The destinations were AMAZING! The tours and tour guides were very interesting and informative, never boring or dull. Activities aboard were really fun, like cooking or a water-color paint class if you wanted to skip a tour, or if there was some extra free time. I can't say enough about what a wonderful trip this was. The itinerary was very well thought-out, so you don't feel taxed or rushed, yet can always be on the go if that's what you want to do. This was a fantastic vacation for the money. I wish I could afford to go on one every year!! Highly, highly recommend it!!! Read Less

We have told other and would love to do another. The tours and food were exceptional. Our expectations were met at every port and town we visited. We would do another Viking cruise with family. The crew was friendly and professional. We would love to cruise the Rhine river too. The Viking was so different from the Ocean cruises we have been on. We liked the personal attention and small ship experience. The tour guides were learned and friendly. The little things the crew did when we returned from town were so special. Thanks Viking for meeting all our expectations!! We hope to travel again in the need future with other friends and family. It's a trip to share with those you love. Read Less

We have traveled with Viking on two other river cruises and were greatly pleased with the ports, tours, and attention of the staff to keep us informed and address any questions. The ship (being new) was in excellent condition, as the other ships we have occupied. Our cabin, while not large, was clean and comfortable. The lounge provided a pleasant area to relax, read and enjoy the scenery as we traveled. The dining was quite good, as was the staff who waited on our table. The opportunity to choose from dining areas other than the dining room was appreciated. It was pleasant to find that staff members would acknowledge us by name and show an appropriate level of personal interest. We have, and will continue to recommend Viking as an excellent way to not only see various cities in Europe, but also gain a better understanding of their history and significance. We look forward to traveling with Viking in the future. Read Less

We wanted to celebrate our 25th anniversary in Paris but also wanted to see some of the countryside without renting a car, driving for hours and unpacking in a new lodging every night. This trip was perfect. As it was our first trip to Paris, we stayed an extra week in Paris proper, having already made the usual day trips to Versailles and Giverny from the cruise. The ship is beautiful but as ours was only it's second cruise, we did experience some "shaking down" issues with items in our stateroom. The crew couldn't have been more accommodating, however, so it was a minor inconvenience. The trip to the beaches of the Normandy invasion was far more impressive to us than we could have imagined. We enjoyed all of the excursions and we always take advantage of the optional ones as we have had wonderful discoveries with Viking's options. The food was good, the wine was too. WE met some great people among the other passengers. Some of whom we plan to see again; perhaps on another Viking cruise. Read Less

I kept seeing the Commercials on PBS, so enticing and let me tell you it lived up to and beyond what I had even imagined! The Service was FANTASTIC! Marius and Aron were truly the BEST! Executive Chef Richard Vallis & staff Amazed us at every meal. Starting with a Fabulous choice of Les Hors D'Oeuvres to Les Plats Principaux (Main Course) and many Delightful choice of Desserts. The Lunch Menu was Great. You had choice on a menu and a Delicious Salad Bar/Buffet. The wine was always flowing you NEVER had to ask for a fill, it was quickly taken to notice and done. The Excursions were Great! So many Fantastic Sites to see and things to do. Definitely do the Louve and Palace of Versilles (cost extra but worth it)! Normandy (American Memorial) is an emotional place to go. On the last day you had an option to do a 3 hr. Paris (on your own) so glad we did, we walked to the Eiffel Tower and climbed it. Rouen (Joan of Arc town) was also one of my favorite sites,so much history, so glad I had a lovely guide, the shopping was fun too. ALL restaurants that were part of certain excursions they took us to were Fabulous! My friend and I met so many wonderful people/couples and made lasting friendships. Who would think I'd be a bridesmaid on the Viking Rolf's "first-ever" wedding of cruise-friends Al & Kelley by Captain Dario Webber, it was such a Special evening! The entertainment was Average, many of us wished and asked for more dancing music and it just wasn't delivered. On walking excursions: I took notice that a few senior passengers that had difficulty walking ie:Givenchy Gardens were well attended to by our Program Director Michael Bright. It was Delightful to receive such detailed treats, from the Chocolate Bunny in our stateroom upon arrival on Easter Sunday to the arrival onto the ship greeted by staff with delicious warm broth handed to us after a cold day visiting sites. I loved our "Paris" themed-luncheon: Coming up the ships ramp hearing LIVE accordion music, ALL Staff dressed with a French Beret, handing us champagne as we entered, they made this day Superb! Again the food was just FANTASTIC! VIP all the way, I NEED to mention that before you leave you're able to enjoy a breakfast, suitcases are loaded for you, and there is a Viking Cruise Staff member "helping you" at the airport kiosk getting your flight boarding passes and directing or helping anyone passenger with Handicap needs get to the airlines. I dearly miss the Viking Rolf and the Crew and I definitely have withdrawals of my Wonderful Experience. It was truly a FABULOUS Cruise and I can't wait to go again someday and bring my Family! We; chose this cruise because we wanted to see France and the beaches of Normandy. This was the BEST vacation we ever had. The staff on the Rolfe were the best!! The trip was superbly planned, we didn't have to worry about anything!! The food was wonderful and enough choices to suit just about anyone. The day trips were very well done, there was always enough time to shop or take pictures. Often when we got back to the ship, there was a hot beverage or a quick snack. In March the weather is often drizzly, but there were always enough umbrellas. We did one extra trip to the Louvre, again very well worth it. We had at least an hour to explore on our own. The rooms are small, after all this is a ship, but the beds are very comfortable and the bathroom is well appointed. The stewards are willing to help and answer questions. We are planning another trip in 2018, and can't wait. The trips are well worth the money, this is the way to see Europe. The cruise suggests a tip of 100euros for 8 days, again the staff is so wonderful, it was a pleasure to to give them a great tip. Read Less

I chose Viking for two main reasons........destination and value for money. Viking arranged my flights and handled everything, pickup, transfers and departure. The Viking agent helped us get baggage checked in and escorted us all the way to the Delta desk........quite a help in an previously not visited airport. The Rolf is amazing, new and modern. Cabin was great, just what we had expected and reality was true to advertising. Dining was excellent with many French dishes, quality was excellent, service was terrific. I can say enough about the staff, from the maid service to the Captain.........everyone was positive, friendly and seemed eager to do whatever was necessary to make our voyage perfect. I can't say much about evening activities since we were in bed shortly after dinner each night. Shore excursions were wonderful. Guides were friendly, knew their subject matter and happy to answer questions. Each of our excursion guides was quite impressive. Read Less

The Normandy beaches were a place we had not seen despite many trips to Europe. The experience via The Rolf was a dream that came true. While I might have enjoyed another day in the Normandy area, the trip was well planned and executed. The crew was outstanding, especially Michael, the Director, who seemed to be available constantly. All were very well trained and service was obviously a priority. Since we had been to Paris many times since 1970, we simply enjoyed seeing changes, but did not take in the evening in Paris event. Food: Excellent! And the pre-dinner meetings were informative about the next day's events plus the special meal and wines. Crew seemed to enjoy bantering w/each other. Cabin: We had a AA Veranda suite - it was in perfect condition and well cared for by a wonderful lady named Viki. Shore excursions: We enjoyed most of them. As we are older, we did not take one that was listed as 'difficult' so we simply walked around the small town. Weather was fine for most of trip, but some rain and cool days. We did not travel with children nor did we see many on our voyage. There were a couple families, but with grown children. Read Less

My husband and I chose a Viking cruise because it combined Paris and Normandy. We travel internationally at least once a year and have taken many cruises. Through Viking, we arrived three days early for an optional, pre-cruise stay. Although we stayed in a suburban hotel 30 minutes Metro travel time from the heart of Paris, it was a quiet, clean hotel close to Metro, train, and excellent restaurants. Viking has a desk at the hotel to answer any questions and to help guests plan optional outings on the optional days before and after the cruise. The Viking ship was only three weeks old. The staff was attentive and enthusiastic; the excursions were outstanding with excellent guides who spoke flawless English. The average age of the passenger was 60+, and most guests were seasoned, international travelers. There were two families on board with well behaved teenagers. Our only criticism is in reference to the cabin, where there are under cabinet lights shining 24 hours a day in the bathroom; we managed to cover them fairly well with a towel. I would suggest that travelers sensitive to light bring eye masks. One of the best parts of the cruise was embarkation and disembarkation. A Viking representative met us at the airport and quickly, efficiently took us to our hotel. On the day of our departure, our flight did not leave until four pm. We were allowed to stay on the ship for both breakfast and lunch. A van took departing guests to the airport, where a Viking representative guided us through the baggage check-in process and did not leave us until we were in the actual line to check in ourselves. On many other cruises, the included, round-trip air trip ended up with air connections too close together in time, our running from terminal to terminal, and then no assigned seats with our having to beg for seats together on the particular air trip. Viking leaves the traveler with wonderful memories. Read Less

Waited at the airport for almost two hours ( after having our luggage) before we left for the ship. Still going back and forth with Viking on the transfer back to the airport. Viking made a mistake and they have yet to admit it. - very frustrating. Crew and the ship were great. Being on only the third cruise with this "new" ship was good. Meals were excellent. on board service excellent. The land tour guides were mixed; some were excellent others poor. Quite a distraction from the on board excellence service on the ship to some very poor tour guides who made you feel as though they were doing you a favor. When we did a river cruise with Avalon, every tour guide was " excellent". Viking needs to "up their game" Read Less

Every part of the trip was excellent. I think they did a really nice job with regional foods and drinks and balancing more active and less active days. The guides were very good and the choice of sights was really outstanding. Our day in Normandy was especially moving. The other guests were friendly and interesting. They were clearly people who like to travel, and we had a lot in common. The room was kept immaculate, and we really appreciated the quick service, when we needed to send out clothes. The onboard programs were interesting and varied. I liked the cooking demonstration, lemon tart, yummy and the water color class. The talks were all informative and interesting. All in all I can say that we are already looking forward to another Viking cruise and recommend the Viking Rolf as an all around delightful experience from every possible aspect. First Viking literature said they use a pre-cruise hotel a five minute walk to the Eiffel Tower. Our hotel was on the very edge of Paris in a residential area. They sent us information about a tour they would give us of 12 of the top sites of Paris stopping to see four of them. They offered us a leader lead tour by subway to one site not in the top 20. The first day on the boat they said there would be transportation to Paris. Viking took us to the boat and when we got there they said the tour to Paris had already left so we missed it. Our room was a French balcony. It had almost no floor space. They only place to sit was on the bed or a vanity stool that when pulled out blocked the only aisle to get around the room. The bed with the comforter on was within 8 inches of the wall on one side and less than 8 inches when the curtain was pulled on the other side. The room would be OK for one person, but not two people. As for the meals, there were not enough servers. The first few days the servers actually ran back and forth to the kitchen and still we never finished eating before 9:30 pm. The servers put turned over glasses on several tables saying we could not sit on those tables in order to pack us in so they would have less tables. People couldn't always sit with the people with whom they were traveling since they wanted every seat at the open tables filled. The evening entertainment was often someone from the ship reading something about a subject such as cheese and art. There never was any local people coming on board for entertainment. The excursions were fine. Read Less

The cruise along the river was smooth and quiet and gave us a interesting view of the cities along the river. Our staff was personable and entertaining. Each evening before dinner they would provide a little entertainment and tell us about our dinner and the wine selections and the Drink of the Day which were all wonderful. This was the second time on the Paris to Normandy to Paris cruise. This was my 3rd trip with Viking. Viking continues to improve as the years go by. We were docked in Le Pecq which was an adorable suburb of Paris. I loved the excursion offered by Viking to St. Germain -en-Laye. It was beautiful and gave me a view of Le Pecq and the surrounding area. Having taken this tour before it was a welcome additional tour. I was so happy with being able to do Paris on my own and also knowing where I had to be to be picked up in the p.m. Giverny was so beautiful with tulips everywhere. I loved the house with the brightly colored rooms! This time I spent some time in town with fun shopping and a delicious creme brulee' at one of the many adorable cafes. On the way back to the bus, it started to rain which turned into...SNOW!! A beautiful ending to a wonderful excursion. Rouen was fascinating. The first two or three blocks away from the river, were of newer construction having been bombed during the war, were such a contrast to the older Rouen. The tour was interesting, but again, I was able to take some of Rouen that was new to me as I went off on my own, knowing where the Rolf was docked. I love the aspect of Viking tours! My favorite tour was the visit to Arromanches Les Bain, and the American Cemetery in area of Normandy. Arromanches is one of my favorite places in the world. The ocean is so gorgeous, it makes it difficult to think about June 6th. I love the town and the cafe that served up a very French lunch. It was even better this year. The visit to the American Cemetery always brings tears to my eyes when the American National Anthem is played. Plus I loved the fact that Viking had a small appreciation ceremony for past Vets. There were quite a few on our trip. When we docked in Les Andelys, I had already seen the castle, so I led a small cadre of women shopping in the wonderful little boutiques in town. My best memory is sitting outside at a little cafe, sipping an apple liquor, and seeing at least 6 red Viking umbrellas being held by the husbands of all the wives that were shopping in the little boutique on the corner. Then, we had a great conversation with a Frenchman whose daughter was going to school in California and wanted to show us pictures of her on his phone. It started to rain as we all ran inside the little cafe, just in time when the hail poured down!! It was once again, a great ending to a perfect day. The last tour to Napoleon's Malmaison was so fascinating. A great new tour Viking, thanks. The crew was like a family. When they would gather us together in the lounge every evening to tell us about dinner and the wine plus the next day's adventure, they had a little routine that was just adorable. It didn't hurt that the captain and several of the others, were lovely to look at!! I also thought the little cocktail hour for returning travelers was lovely with so many cocktails to try. We ended our tour with a three day extension in Paris at the Hotel Ampere. The Viking tour guide was very nice and very helpful during our stay. All in all, the best trip yet. In 2017 I am taking Viking's ocean cruise called Empires of the Mediterranean. Can't wait!! Read Less

The staff on the ship and at the Hotel Ampere were universally knowledgeable, attentive, and caring. Our time was well spent. I would have appreciated some on-board lectures giving me a better context for the yours before hand. For example, a class introducing church architecture would have been welcomed. For me, the highlight of the cruise was our visit to the Normandy battlefield. That visit had been on my " ucket list" for many years. I was not disappointed. But, there were so many other highlights that it may be unfair to single out that tour. I was impressed by Versailles but disappointed because of the crowds. I'm glad we visited there though. This was our first trip to Europe and also our first river cruise. It was the most memorable vacation we have taken. All the arrangements were made by Viking and were perfect. We did not have one mishap anywhere on this trip from the airport, to the transportation, to the cruise itself, throughout the extended stay in Paris afterwards, or the flight home. The Rolf was beautiful and spotless, our room was kept immaculate (and was very nice with an excellent bathroom), the food was incredible, and the staff was incredibly gracious every single day. Even though it was chilly and it rained on and off, France was amazing and everyplace we went was beautiful. Our shore excursions were well planned with knowledgeable guides. We loved visiting Vernon, Rouen, Monet's home and gardens at Giverny, Normandy, Les Andelys, and Versailles. We extended our stay after the cruise in Paris for three days and it was wonderful. We stay at the Ampere Hotel (which was lovely, our room was not small, and the service was excellent) and explored as much of the city as we could. Our Viking guide showed us around the area and how to use the Metro so we were ready to go and spent each day out exploring. We were only sad that we couldn't see everything!! I don't know if it was because this was our "first" for everything or that we were so excited for this trip, or because the weather was pretty much agreeable the who time, but we would do it again in a second! Chance to travel with friends compelled this trip. Got a good rate, lots of opportunities for excursions in a luxury setting. Loved the ship and crew. The crew is very responsive to every need and seemed to anticipate needs. The onboard entertainment was diverse and excellent. The excursions were varied and excellent, although the cobblestone streets on most of the excursions were a challenge to a number of the older passengers. The menu items were varied and cooked to perfection. Although I am generally not predisposed to choose fish for dinner, I found the fish dishes to be the most outstanding of all the meals. The wine was excellent in both white and red. The wait staff was friendly and excellent. They were knowledgeable regarding wine and dinner choices, and could describe cooking techniques and choices with knowledge and humor. this was our second/third cruise with Viking and we were completely satisfied. We did back to back cruises, the first one Paris - Paris and the second Lyon to Avignon. I can't say enough about the crew on board the ships - because the passenger capacity is so small, they get to know you very quickly. Tours were excellent - although mother nature didn't give us a lot of sunshine in the 2 weeks + that we were there........not something Viking controls. We had a veranda stateroom and our friends had a french balcony - the veranda is well worth the extra money as our friends had a very tight fit against the french window. Our cabin steward was in and out before we even knew it - always had our cabin cleaned by the time we returned from breakfast. Entertainment was a piano player - he had a good variety of songs and a pleasant voice. Dining on the veranda at the bow of the boat was our favourite spot - although we had dinner in the dining room. The dining room has beautiful views as long as you're not up against the wall. Very well organized when it came time to disembark for tours and when it came time to say goodbye. Food & beverages were excellent - always a good variety of choices at meals and the chef always recommends something for dinner. We travelled with another couple and are planning our adventure for 2017 - with so many river cruise options, we just can't decide where to go next! Read Less

The only glitch was the tour of the Normandy beaches was poor in the morning. But great after lunch for the second part of the day. Since the cruise targets people interested in the Normandy beaches I believe they need to fix this. We choose the cruise so we could see Paris and cruise to the Normandy beaches which I wanted to see. We did run into a couple of glitches where we went on a walking tour to one of the castles and it was not an easy hike. I was fine but I ended up helping a few of the older and more feeble customers up the hill to the top. One person had to be taken off the hill and ended up going to a local hospital. I do not believe that it was advertised as a harsh climb or something similar. We also ran into a problem with the concierge desk since we had deviation on our flight and were extending it in Barcelona. There was some confusion when we were talking to the desk and I felt as if the Concierge was going to leave us on our own to get to the airport which was not close or find us a cab which she said would not come for some reason. Michael, the Cruise Director, jumped in and got us a ride to the airport but even to the last minute when we walked off the ship, the concierge I felt was holding a grudge. As far as the general cruise, it was great and my wife enjoyed it very much. It is unfortunate when things like that cloud your memories of what could have been a another perfect trip. Yes, we have purchased dollars for our next trip which we hope will be soon and we are hoping for the Scandanavian trip. I will think twice about ever trying a deviation again however. Not worth it!
