Never having been anywhere else in France besides Paris, we wanted to particularly see Normandy and all the history. Totally enjoyed the overnights in several ports and the included shore excursions. Paris to Normandy round trip was fabulous. From the start at embarkation, which there were no lines and only to show your passport and get your room key was out of the norm and greatly appreciated. The ship is new and well done in terms of layout and design and colors. The cabin was beautiful. Service on the entire cruise was outstanding. Food extraordinary, better than the last time we had sailed on Viking. They have upped their game. Entertainment was ok, nothing spectacular, but just enjoying dinner and the night air was enough for us. The only con I can think of is that a plunge pool would've been a nice touch. Even though the weather was slightly inclement, being able to take a quick dip would have been nice. Or even have a couple of hot tubs to ease those aching walking muscles. Definitely would recommend this to anyone who wants to see northern France and the WW2 history. Read Less

Normandy was on our "Bucket List of Places to visit." Being that we'd been on other Viking cruises in the past, and Viking offered this particular cruise when we wanted to go, we went with Viking rather than with another cruise line. We've also gone on two of Viking's ocean ships, the Viking Star and the Viking Sea, plus we've cruised with two other cruise lines, but our first choice is always Viking. The Rolf is a beautifully appointed new ship. Villeroy and Bosch fixtures, lots glass, comfortable quarters, great lounge and dining room -- we could not have been more impressed, but then, that could be said about all of the Viking ships. They offer elegance without being stuffy. The shore excursions on all of Viking cruises are always good, and on this particular cruise, my favorite was the visit to Monet's home and gardens, and I think the visit to Normandy and the museum located there was my husband's favorite. He's a retired US Navy officer, but I also enjoyed the visit to Normandy because of being a history buff. The cruise director, whose name I do not remember, was excellent. In fact, all of the staff and crew employees were excellent. We really enjoyed interfacing with all. There is something special that Viking has going, and we truly hope they don't grow so fast that they lose it. Read Less

Absolutely the BEST experience. I would not change a thing! First class food and service. Everybody knows your name. The staff knows would you would like almost before you do!! I believe that this was one of the best vacations my wife and I have had. The tour guides were perfect in everyway and Viking has set up priority tours whenever possible. The fact that there are tours each day included in the price of the cruise and that the tours were really executed well really shows the attention to detail and value that Viking provides. The ship was spotless and I believe the fine staff cleaned our room twice a day! The daily culture immersion classes in the local culture were very informative. Most times when the boat docked you were right in the center of the town so that all one had to do was walk off the boat and start sight seeing. Don't wit, sign up for a Viking cruise! Read Less

Why did we choose Viking? Because we're not thrilled with big ship cruiseline sand thought we'd try this alternative to see different cities while taking in the sights along the river. If only we'd had such an opportunity! Apparently it's not unusual to have river cruises become tour bus excursions as they're dependent upon water levels, that are subject to risibly and falling at any given moment. In our case, as we were aware before we departed but were helpless to do anything about due to the terms of the contract, the Siene was high on account of rain. As a result, our cabin with scenic balcony was replaced with a three star European hotel with dinners served in the basement, devoid of any selection - or taste, for that matter. So much for French cuisine for the first three nights. The bus tours took us to pre-arranged lunch spots, chosen more for how they could accommodate the large number of tourists than for fine dining experience, again with a preset, and rather bland, menu. Tours were rather hurried with guides speaking through headsets given to the divided groups according to buses. I was on the younger end of the spectrum at not quite 60 and in fairly good shape so was pretty shocked when's one tour guide asked a group of primarily older adults if they could walk quick you a steep incline of a hill to get to castle ruins since she had taken a rather lengthy time explaining the history and had to be back to the bus by departure time. There were some folks huffing and puffing and nursing swollen joints by the time we descended. The staff is nice enough, some more so - and more genuine - than others. And of course we did meet some nice folks on board, a few with whom we've stayed in touch and will visit again, on land. The best part of the trip? The three days afterward at a hotel we booked on our own with private tour guides who individualized their pace to ours. Would we do a river - or any - cruise again? Heck no. Read Less

Our Paris to Normandy Cruise was scheduled while Seine was flooded. The first 3 days in Paris pre trip, we stayed at Ampere' Hotel which had broken AC and tiny rooms. The Viking representative, Pamela?, knew little of what our cruise was going to do in lieu of boarding the boat. She was more interested in making sure we each greated her before we began to talk to her. Everyone understood why we were not able to board our ship for the first 3 days of the cruise. This was NOT the problem. Luggage was lost between hotels. When asking if our luggage was found or what they were doing to find it, cruise director Michael said "it's only luggage". At the next hotel, Le Meridian, again no AC or working refrigerator. Evening meals were comical as waiters threw napkins at guests, berating guests for not using correct silverware, one tossing his coat in the center of a table, stomping off. Diners left. Tours were very rushed. No time to both dive in to a shop and find a restroom. Many, many details and monuments were left out. In Paris and Versailles, Bruno was our tour guide....rude remarks about Americans eating so much and not urbane enough to push through lines etc. He gave little historical information and wore same clothes two days. Once on the boat accommodations were much better. After only 2 days on the ship ran out of 1664 beer. Tour of Rouen and Normandy beaches were much better...though rushed. Finally, we board the Viking bus to head to the airport and home. After 4 hours at airport ticket counters and luggage check-ins for return home flight due to Viking not informing us of a change in our flights. Each of our 3 couples had to pay $3400 for new one-way tickets. Viking told us to get our refund though insurance which only covers $3000. Insurance said it's not their problem.....still fighting with Viking for a refund of our airline tickets. What a waste of our precious time and money! Never again! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to visit France and we wanted to experience river cruising as opposed to ocean cruising. And in checking with friends and others Viking was highly recommended. Because the Seine was experiencing high water levels, then changes had to be made to the cruise schedule and while Viking knew this several days in advance of our departure from Canada, we were not given any options for rescheduling our trip or refunding our money. While the staff of the Rolf made every effort to make our trip enjoyable, we certainly expected that Viking cruises would make a generous offer to compensate for our disappointment. Not so, we have been offered a 20% voucher for another cruise which MUST be used within one year. As seniors, we save for at least 2 years to take a major holiday like this (those that cost in excess of $10,000!!) so virtually they have offered us nothing. We shared this in an email with their Customer Relations department and have received no satisfaction and were told basically to take it or leave it!! And apparently there is no one with more authority than a customer relations officer to whom we can appeal; hard to believe for such a huge corporation! Needless to say, Viking will not be considered when we plan for future holiday nor would we ever recommend them to family or friends. Read Less

For our first Viking Cruise we chose the Paris & Neormandy itinerary. No knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised by the highly professional approach of everyone involved on the Viking end - from the driver that picked us up at De Gaulle airport to the Program Director, Master Chef, Wait Staff, to the Representative that assisted us upon departure. I can't give them enough kudos for their attention to detail. All in all, I would give Viking River Cruises the maximum stars possible. We enjoyed the experience so much that we booked another cruise as soon as we got home - this time the two week Grand European Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest with the front end extension in Amsterdam so we can visit the Van Gogh Museum plus the Rijksmuseum. Also added a number of added excursions along the way to fill out the experience. We leave in October and can't wait to embark! Read Less

Our guess is that everyone who takes a river cruise likes their cruise company. That said, it is hard to imagine that any company could outdo Viking with service and hospitality. This was our second Viking cruise (previously had been on a Rhine cruise on the Viking longship Ingve..sistership of the Rolf.) We wanted to visit Normandy and felt that this cruise, with stop particularly at the Monet gardens at Giverny would meet our desires....and it did! Pickup at the airport in Paris was excellent...the Viking rep was easily visible just when we left the baggage claim area. Van service to the ship was fine. The docking location in LePeq, outside of downtown Paris is not the prettiest location for starting the cruise. This location is beyond Viking's control and hopefully will be changed at some future time. However, that should not detract from anyone's enjoyment. The ship, like the other longships, is beautiful. You are greeted by staff when you arrive and the luggage is delivered to your cabin. The cabins are roomy enough with underbed storage for suitcases. The storage shelves are nicely designed. The interior is modern and well-lighted. The bathroom and shower are reasonably sized. While there is not room enough to play football, the size of the cabin and bathroom with the shower stall are certainly spacious enough. We were in a veranda cabin. The verandas are very nice...you can sit there and enjoy the view while traveling on the river. It is a pleasant spot to relax. The staff is exceptional. From the first greeting until you are released at the airport they make you feel truly welcome. Everyone speaks English well. They are each kind, friendly, and absolutely committed to making your trip enjoyable. From arrival to departure, sit back and Viking takes care of you. They go out of their way to please you, whether with making arrangements for special occasions (ordering flowers) or just about anything that you need or want during your stay. The waitstaff in the dining rooms is superb. The food is terrific...you can have a sit-down meal or slightly lighter fare for breakfast and lunch. The evening meal is sit down and served with wines that vary somewhat with the location. The food is excellent...various selections each night with certain staples always on the menu in case you do not like the chef's specials of the evening. There is usually some entertainment in the evening along with the daily briefing about the next day's activities. Daily excursions, included as part of the cruise, are on the schedule. There are often optional excursions as well. The excursions are very well organized and run efficiently. Comfortable coaches are provided.Water is provided when you leave on the excursions and on return to the ship, the staff greets you when you come aboard, sometimes with music and almost always with some type of drink. We found the tour guides to be quite good overall. Of course, there is individual variation, but we did not find any of the guides (either on this cruise or our previous one) to be substandard. Several of them were truly excellent and all were very informative. HIghlights of this cruise were primarily the visit to Monet's gardens at Giverny. We left the ship early to arrive in Giverny before most of the crowds. Our escort through the gardens was excellent. The admission tickets were of course included in the excursion, which was one of the included trips on the cruise. The trip to Normandy was amazing. While it would always be nice to spend more time, this guided tour got us to various important areas including Omaha Beach and the cemetery above the beach. There was a ceremony at the cemetery which paid tribute to those fallen and also to the veterans in the group. This ceremony, we understood, is held twice daily and Viking arranges to be at it. It was very moving. The entire experience of the Normandy visit was hard to describe...truly a memorable and deeply emotional trip, well planned and organized. The week of our cruise it had been cool, damp, overcast, with a bit of rain. We did have a lot of sun time. Fortunately the sun came out beautifully for the Monet trip and for the Normandy visit. It did rain the day we were at Rouen, a fascinating medieval city where Joan of Arc was executed...not a great day for pictures, but enjoyable and educational nevertheless! The day of departure was fine. We were taken by van to the airport where we were met by a Viking rep who escorted us directly to the airline checkin...did not have to find our way through the construction. The only issue that we had was an intermittent whistle in our cabin that appeared to be related to the sliding door. The engineer who came to check it out felt that it was a normal noise. However, we feel, and indicated on our departure survey, that this should be checked. Overall, this was a great trip. In our experience, Viking service is great. The ship is beautiful...Rolf had been in service only several weeks or maybe about two months. The staff could not be nicer. The program director, is wonderful...friendly, funny, and informative. The maitre d'hotel and concierge are superb. The waitstaff as we said was amazingly professional and ready to meet your every desire. The food was magnificent and certainly plentiful. You cannot go hungry on a Viking ship. We have no hesitation at all in recommending this cruise. Our experience, now with two Viking river cruises, has been excellent. The Viking sales staff is very professional and friendly. They are helpful and knowledgable about the cruises and the ships. Unfortunately, we do not think that the Viking air department is at the same level of excellence..that service needs to be improved. While others might have different impressions, as noted in some other reviews, we believe that one cannot go wrong with a Viking river cruise so we believe that the Viking cruise is a very good value for the money. We will be taking a Viking ocean cruise next. Read Less

Simply the best ever. This was our honeymoon and everyone on board made it spectacular! The cruise had amazing ports of call, incredible tours, food that was second to none, and some of the best wine I've ever had. Our cabin had a full sliding door so we could enjoy the scenery from our bed if we wanted. We could sit ont he deck with a glass of wine and look at a centuries old church that was only hundreds of feet away. With such a small group on the ship (I've taken the big ocean "family friendly" cruises), you got to know your waiters, Maitre D', and all of the staff. They greeted you with personalized greetings every time. We had an extension in Paris afterward which gave us a little more time to enjoy that beautiful city. I can't say enough about this cruise. I recommend to all of my friends and we will go on another Viking cruise for sure! Read Less

We choose the cruise so we could see Paris and cruise to the Normandy beaches which I wanted to see. We did run into a couple of glitches where we went on a walking tour to one of the castles and it was not an easy hike. I was fine but I ended up helping a few of the older and more feeble customers up the hill to the top. One person had to be taken off the hill and ended up going to a local hospital. I do not believe that it was advertised as a harsh climb or something similar. We also ran into a problem with the concierge desk since we had deviation on our flight and were extending it in Barcelona. There was some confusion when we were talking to the desk and I felt as if the Concierge was going to leave us on our own to get to the airport which was not close or find us a cab which she said would not come for some reason. Michael, the Cruise Director, jumped in and got us a ride to the airport but even to the last minute when we walked off the ship, the concierge I felt was holding a grudge. As far as the general cruise, it was great and my wife enjoyed it very much. It is unfortunate when things like that cloud your memories of what could have been a another perfect trip. Yes, we have purchased dollars for our next trip which we hope will be soon and we are hoping for the Scandanavian trip. I will think twice about ever trying a deviation again however. Not worth it! The staff interacted with each other in a humorous respectful way. The shore excursions were very interesting and enjoyable. The only glitch was the tour of the Normandy beaches was poor in the morning. But great after lunch for the second part of the day. Since the cruise targets people interested in the Normandy beaches I believe they need to fix this. Viking did a good job of shuttling us in and out of Paris to spend some time both at the beginning of the tour and the end so we got to spend the time we wanted. . Read Less

Chance to travel with friends compelled this trip. Got a good rate, lots of opportunities for excursions in a luxury setting. Loved the ship and crew. The crew is very responsive to every need and seemed to anticipate needs. The onboard entertainment was diverse and excellent. The excursions were varied and excellent, although the cobblestone streets on most of the excursions were a challenge to a number of the older passengers. The menu items were varied and cooked to perfection. Although I am generally not predisposed to choose fish for dinner, I found the fish dishes to be the most outstanding of all the meals. The wine was excellent in both white and red. The wait staff was friendly and excellent. They were knowledgeable regarding wine and dinner choices, and could describe cooking techniques and choices with knowledge and humor. this was our second/third cruise with Viking and we were completely satisfied. We did back to back cruises, the first one Paris - Paris and the second Lyon to Avignon. I can't say enough about the crew on board the ships - because the passenger capacity is so small, they get to know you very quickly. Tours were excellent - although mother nature didn't give us a lot of sunshine in the 2 weeks + that we were there........not something Viking controls. We had a veranda stateroom and our friends had a french balcony - the veranda is well worth the extra money as our friends had a very tight fit against the french window. Our cabin steward was in and out before we even knew it - always had our cabin cleaned by the time we returned from breakfast. Entertainment was a piano player - he had a good variety of songs and a pleasant voice. Dining on the veranda at the bow of the boat was our favourite spot - although we had dinner in the dining room. The dining room has beautiful views as long as you're not up against the wall. Very well organized when it came time to disembark for tours and when it came time to say goodbye. Food & beverages were excellent - always a good variety of choices at meals and the chef always recommends something for dinner. We travelled with another couple and are planning our adventure for 2017 - with so many river cruise options, we just can't decide where to go next! Read Less

I would have appreciated some on-board lectures giving me a better context for the yours before hand. For example, a class introducing church architecture would have been welcomed. For me, the highlight of the cruise was our visit to the Normandy battlefield. That visit had been on my " ucket list" for many years. I was not disappointed. But, there were so many other highlights that it may be unfair to single out that tour. I was impressed by Versailles but disappointed because of the crowds. I'm glad we visited there though. This was our first trip to Europe and also our first river cruise. It was the most memorable vacation we have taken. All the arrangements were made by Viking and were perfect. We did not have one mishap anywhere on this trip from the airport, to the transportation, to the cruise itself, throughout the extended stay in Paris afterwards, or the flight home. The Rolf was beautiful and spotless, our room was kept immaculate (and was very nice with an excellent bathroom), the food was incredible, and the staff was incredibly gracious every single day. Even though it was chilly and it rained on and off, France was amazing and everyplace we went was beautiful. Our shore excursions were well planned with knowledgeable guides. We loved visiting Vernon, Rouen, Monet's home and gardens at Giverny, Normandy, Les Andelys, and Versailles. We extended our stay after the cruise in Paris for three days and it was wonderful. We stay at the Ampere Hotel (which was lovely, our room was not small, and the service was excellent) and explored as much of the city as we could. Our Viking guide showed us around the area and how to use the Metro so we were ready to go and spent each day out exploring. We were only sad that we couldn't see everything!! I don't know if it was because this was our "first" for everything or that we were so excited for this trip, or because the weather was pretty much agreeable the who time, but we would do it again in a second! We have already reserved a trip next year and it will be with Viking. We are looking forward to taking more cruises with Viking to many different countries! Read Less

This was the second time on the Paris to Normandy to Paris cruise. This was my 3rd trip with Viking. Viking continues to improve as the years go by. We were docked in Le Pecq which was an adorable suburb of Paris. I loved the excursion offered by Viking to St. Germain -en-Laye. It was beautiful and gave me a view of Le Pecq and the surrounding area. Having taken this tour before it was a welcome additional tour. I was so happy with being able to do Paris on my own and also knowing where I had to be to be picked up in the p.m. Giverny was so beautiful with tulips everywhere. I loved the house with the brightly colored rooms! This time I spent some time in town with fun shopping and a delicious creme brulee' at one of the many adorable cafes. On the way back to the bus, it started to rain which turned into...SNOW!! A beautiful ending to a wonderful excursion. Rouen was fascinating. The first two or three blocks away from the river, were of newer construction having been bombed during the war, were such a contrast to the older Rouen. The tour was interesting, but again, I was able to take some of Rouen that was new to me as I went off on my own, knowing where the Rolf was docked. I love the aspect of Viking tours! My favorite tour was the visit to Arromanches Les Bain, and the American Cemetery in area of Normandy. Arromanches is one of my favorite places in the world. The ocean is so gorgeous, it makes it difficult to think about June 6th. I love the town and the cafe that served up a very French lunch. It was even better this year. The visit to the American Cemetery always brings tears to my eyes when the American National Anthem is played. Plus I loved the fact that Viking had a small appreciation ceremony for past Vets. There were quite a few on our trip. When we docked in Les Andelys, I had already seen the castle, so I led a small cadre of women shopping in the wonderful little boutiques in town. My best memory is sitting outside at a little cafe, sipping an apple liquor, and seeing at least 6 red Viking umbrellas being held by the husbands of all the wives that were shopping in the little boutique on the corner. Then, we had a great conversation with a Frenchman whose daughter was going to school in California and wanted to show us pictures of her on his phone. It started to rain as we all ran inside the little cafe, just in time when the hail poured down!! It was once again, a great ending to a perfect day. The last tour to Napoleon's Malmaison was so fascinating. A great new tour Viking, thanks. The crew was like a family. When they would gather us together in the lounge every evening to tell us about dinner and the wine plus the next day's adventure, they had a little routine that was just adorable. It didn't hurt that the captain and several of the others, were lovely to look at!! I also thought the little cocktail hour for returning travelers was lovely with so many cocktails to try. We ended our tour with a three day extension in Paris at the Hotel Ampere. The Viking tour guide was very nice and very helpful during our stay. All in all, the best trip yet. My husband and I chose a Viking cruise because it combined Paris and Normandy. We travel internationally at least once a year and have taken many cruises. Through Viking, we arrived three days early for an optional, pre-cruise stay. Although we stayed in a suburban hotel 30 minutes Metro travel time from the heart of Paris, it was a quiet, clean hotel close to Metro, train, and excellent restaurants. Viking has a desk at the hotel to answer any questions and to help guests plan optional outings on the optional days before and after the cruise. The Viking ship was only three weeks old. The staff was attentive and enthusiastic; the excursions were outstanding with excellent guides who spoke flawless English. The average age of the passenger was 60+, and most guests were seasoned, international travelers. There were two families on board with well behaved teenagers. Our only criticism is in reference to the cabin, where there are under cabinet lights shining 24 hours a day in the bathroom; we managed to cover them fairly well with a towel. I would suggest that travelers sensitive to light bring eye masks. One of the best parts of the cruise was embarkation and disembarkation. A Viking representative met us at the airport and quickly, efficiently took us to our hotel. On the day of our departure, our flight did not leave until four pm. We were allowed to stay on the ship for both breakfast and lunch. A van took departing guests to the airport, where a Viking representative guided us through the baggage check-in process and did not leave us until we were in the actual line to check in ourselves. On many other cruises, the included, round-trip air trip ended up with air connections too close together in time, our running from terminal to terminal, and then no assigned seats with our having to beg for seats together on the particular air trip. Viking leaves the traveler with wonderful memories. Read Less

Airport transfers ( to/from) left a lot to be desired, i.e. poor. Bad first impression, made only worst with the last the last impression. Waited at the airport for almost two hours ( after having our luggage) before we left for the ship. Still going back and forth with Viking on the transfer back to the airport. Viking made a mistake and they have yet to admit it. - very frustrating. Crew and the ship were great. Being on only the third cruise with this "new" ship was good. Meals were excellent. on board service excellent. The land tour guides were mixed; some were excellent others poor. Quite a distraction from the on board excellence service on the ship to some very poor tour guides who made you feel as though they were doing you a favor. When we did a river cruise with Avalon, every tour guide was " excellent". Viking needs to "up their game" Read Less

Every part of the trip was excellent. I think they did a really nice job with regional foods and drinks and balancing more active and less active days. The guides were very good and the choice of sights was really outstanding. Our day in Normandy was especially moving. The other guests were friendly and interesting. They were clearly people who like to travel, and we had a lot in common. The room was kept immaculate, and we really appreciated the quick service, when we needed to send out clothes. The onboard programs were interesting and varied. I liked the cooking demonstration, lemon tart, yummy and the water color class. The talks were all informative and interesting. All in all I can say that we are already looking forward to another Viking cruise and recommend the Viking Rolf as an all around delightful experience from every possible aspect. Every member of the crew was wonderful. Thank you, Viking! Read Less
