After years of wanting to go to Paris, we finally pulled the trigger on the Paris - Normandy cruise. The itinerary included a couple of places that were on our list. For me, first and foremost was Paris and Monet's gardens at Giverney. My husband definitely wanted to visit Normandy. This was our first River Cruise and it could not have been better. The longship was the Rolf. As you arrive, you are greeted with hot lemon scented hand towels to refresh you after a long transatlantic flight and travel. After checking in we had a nice lunch and then took the Viking shuttle into Paris for exploring on our own. It is about a 20 minute ride into Paris, but the bus is very comfortable and you get to enjoy the sites along the way. Paris was beautiful. We lucked out on the weather that day. It was sunny and low 60's. Arriving back to the ship, we unpacked. The room had everything we needed. We were in Veranda stateroom 315 with balcony with two chairs. Perfect location! We didn't sit out there often because it was a bit cool but the best part was lying in bed at night with the drapes wide open and watching the small French towns go by when we sailed at night!!! The bathroom was small but very nice. The shower was great. Bed was very comfortable. Suitcases went under the bed so we're out of the way. Plenty of closet and drawer space. Small fridge was great. Always had water in the room. Our cabin, and really, the whole ship was immaculate. In the evenings when we returned to our rooms there was the Viking Daily with the schedule and events for the next day including weather. The second day was a bus tour of Paris. We stopped several places including Notre Dame. They have a great vox technology to hear your tour guide (all of which were excellent). It is an earpiece and a device that you wear. The good thing is that you don't have to stand right next to them to hear. We sailed during the night to arrive in Vernon. It was November 1st and the last day Monet's Gardens were open before closing for the winter! It was a little foggy and misty but gave a beautiful ambiance to the flowers. We were surprised and delighted how many flowers were still blooming! It was gorgeous! The next day we sailed to Rouen and did a walking tour of that quintessential medieval town. Lots of free time to explore. Onto Normandy the following day. We had about an hour bus ride to the beaches. The buses have nice bathrooms on them and are very comfortable. The museum, the beaches, the town and the Memorial and cemetery were phenomenal. Viking had a private ceremony at the memorial for the veterans on our tour with America's National anthem and the playing of taps on the cerillion bells. Not a dry eye. They gave each person a rose when we got off the bus to put on a grave of our choosing! Very emotional and beautiful day! We sailed to another French town the next day, Les Andelys. There was a tour of a chateau and self exploring of this adorable town. We then sailed back to our original docking at Le pec outside of Paris and explored Paris and ended with a night tour of the city of lights and the Sparkling Eiffel Tower. Now to the Viking cruise and the highlights of the cruise itself. The staff, the food, the presentations were impeccable. Coming back from an excursion we were always welcomed back at the entrance to the boat with some kind of beverage and entertainment.Every night bebore dinner, we had cocktail hour and a daily briefing. Our wonderful chef Ricky, offered his recommendations for dinner and wine and they were spot on. The food was amazing. The wine was outstanding. I'm not much of a drinker but the wine, whites and reds and blushes were smooth. Maitre d'Manuel and Program Director Michael along with Ricky, Carlos et al were hilarious during the briefing. This ship is an intimate ship. It only holds probably 200 tops. Each tour group/ bus is broken down to small groups. We met so many interesting and nice people. We made friends we will never forget. I definitely plan on doing more Viking cruises. It was perfect. Read Less

To see Normandy and the France river views, etc. Dining was outstanding at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Servers, waiters and those in charge were very personable and willing to assist in any manner to ensure our trip was pleasant and accommodating. Rooms were very, very clean and kept that way the entire trip, while we were on or off the boat. Add on trips off the boat were very well done and articulated by the leaders. My only, and it is the only, complaint is the requirement to pay so much of the money up front and ahead of the scheduled cruise dates. We have already booked one for next July and have had to pay our total amount by June 30th of this year. While this is really not a cruise issue in itself, it is a negative with some our our family whom we are trying to get to join us on future Viking cruises. Read Less

The entire trip starting with our arrival in Paris was fantastic. The entire Viking family takes service to the highest level. Every member of the Rolf's crew went out of their way to insure the passengers had all of their needs met. We enjoyed the fact that the menu had items that were common foods in the local region. Also since their were passengers with a wide range of ages and fitness Viking insured that there were shore excursions for people of every fitness level. Also, Viking uses local guides that live in the area not guides that traveled with the ship and read out of a tour book so they are able to answer almost any question based on first hand knowledge. Since there are only about 185 passengers this was a great opportunity to meet people from all over the US and make new friends. The departure was also handled very well, a Viking employee accompanied passengers until you reached the security checkpoint at the airport to assist if there were any issues. We have already booked our next Viking cruise. Read Less

We had a credit coming from VRC and was looking for a way to use it. Upon searching their site, found the Paris to Normandy cruise. We had flown thru Paris but never spent time there. I never thought we would get to Paris, let alone Normandy. It was reasonable, so we booked it with a 3 day Paris pre-tour. We spent 3 full days touring Paris and the vicinity and by the time we took off on the cruise we were spent. VRC put us up at the Hotel Ampere which is about a 15-20 min walk to the Arch de Triomphe. A block away from the metro with restaurants, brasseries, atms within several blocks. The cruise was great, we visited where Van Gogh, Monet and the impressionist did their work. We actually were in the room where Van Gogh stayed for 70 days while painting in the area. There was a tour every day and the city guides was outstanding. Normandy was unbelievable, when you are in the American cemetery and they play The National Anthem and then Taps, it is hard to find a dry eye in the crowd. Very emotional to be there and getting to see where all this history transpired. This was our second cruise with Viking and the first was The Grand European. Both were a "10". I spent 30+ years in customer and Viking knows how to dot the i's and cross the t's. We did one optional tour, farm visit to a cider mill and it was well worth it. We don't usually do many optional tours as the provided ones are great. I have another cruise, Rhine getaway soon and will do southern France at years end. The positive attitude and dedication of the staff at all levels is amazing. The detail with which they take you thru the whole experience is beyond most people's expectations. People meet you coming off the plane, escort you to the hotel or ship depending on which you do, concierges at the hotel and ship were so informative and helpful. I have not done a competitor cruise, but I think it would be difficult to top Viking. Read Less

We chose this Viking cruise because we wanted to see Paris for the first time and to visit the Canadian landing beaches in Normandy. As always on Viking cruises we were not disappointed. We had done the Grand European a year earlier and were as happy this time as the first time. We were picked up at the CDG on time early in the morning and taken straight to the ship where lunch was ready and then a bus into Paris for the afternoon of sightseeing. The staff on the ship totally spoil all the guests with their kindness and service. We love the casual atmosphere and the size of the ship. We recently completed a cruise on a Celebrity line and were not as happy with the size of the ship. Too big! We have now booked two back to back cruises for 2018. One being Paris to Zurich and then to Amsterdam. Our one and only disappointment was the cost of the visit to Versailles - money vs value was not there at all. If we do it again we will give it a miss. The other shore excursions were wonderful and the guides knowledgeable. A favourite was the bus tour around Paris. A huge plus for this included tour. The day trip to Normandy cannot compare to anything else. A must do for Canadians. Read Less

My sister and I loved this cruise. The wonderful rooms are described below. The food was exceptional. Every meal was phenomenal! The food on other cruises I've taken has been good, but could not compare to the gourmet food on this one. (This includes the China Cruise on Viking some years ago.) We enjoyed the included shore excursions and well as one optional tour. Our favorite included tours were the Monet House and Gardens at Giverney and the Normandy Beaches. The Rouen Countryside and Farm Visit, an optional tour, was excellent. We were able to see the wonderful countryside on the way to the farm, a delightful demonstration of the sheep dogs herding sheep, and a tasting of their great apple cider and brandy. We also very much appreciated two of the suggestions in our Viking cruise documents. One was a restaurant, Au Bon Accueil, where we went to celebrate my sister's birthday. It was near the Eiffel Tower which we visited that day. The food was great and the prix-fixe menu was affordable. We also made it to the free fashion show at the Galeries Lafayette which was also mentioned in the cruise documents. How exciting to go to a fashion show in Paris! We visited both of these on our own time in Paris the week before the cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise due to our previous positive experience with a Viking River Cruise. We found the cruise line to be value priced considering the included tours, included beverages, included evening educational talks, demonstrations and entertainment. Any problems or issues with the timing of river locks, or tours were no problems for the guests. The on board staff had work around plans and deftly implemented no plans seamlessly and with no interference to the guests. The ship was very accommodating about tours of the kitchen and the bridge. The dinner staff went out of their way to enhance the dining experience. While the dining room is open seating, after several meals on board some couples would tend to look for one another at dinner time, but this did not preclude your joining different groups throughout the cruise. We found a lot of commonality with other couples and dinner conversations flowed well past the end of the meal. Read Less

My husband is a retired Naval officer and we had both always wanted to visit the beaches of Normandy. We traveled with my brother who is a retired Air Force officer and he too had always wanted to see Normandy so we all went together. We had a lovely staterooms across from one another that were small but comfortable and immaculately clean! We had chosen the smallest of the rooms because we knew we would not be spending time there except to sleep and we were right. The ship has so much to offer- beside the wonderful WONDERFUL tours off-ship- that we were always busy seeing new things, learning new things, meeting up with new friends, dancing every evening, etc. or just relaxing on the deck watching stars and the lights of the French cities pass by night of the beautiful countryside by day. The food was exquisite and the service was meticulous. We felt very spoiled! We will definitely go again. In fact we are having trouble choosing our next one but we peruse the booklets often and will soon be making our choice. Read Less

My husband and I had never been on a cruise. He didn't think he would like an ocean cruise. A family member had been on this particular cruise on Viking and highly recommended it. We both felt it was worth every penny we paid for it. The food was delicious and service was impeccable. The crew was extremely friendly and went out of their way to be of service. The cultural trips were excellent and very well organized. All guides were very interesting as they described what we were seeing. We would have liked to spent more time at Normandy. We liked the fact that we gave one tip when we left and really did not have to spend much money during the cruise. We also enjoyed three extra days in Paris prior to the cruise. Viking helped arrange this part of the trip by providing a hotel, a conseirge who spoke English and could answer our questions, help us plan sight-seeing, meals and transportation from the airport and to the ship, etc. We really took the trip of our life on Viking and have been recommending it to anyone who will listen to us. We hope we can take another cruise on Viking in the near future. Read Less

We had traveled with Viking before (Danube) and were very satisfied. My husband"s mother is very frail and the risk free offer really meant a lot to us. Paris was one of the few international cities that we had not visited. First time on a Long Boat (Rolf). We were met with a smile at Charles DeGaulle Airport. Crew went out of their way constantly. The cabin was well appointed and the bed was so comfortable. The ship was quiet at night so sleeping was a real nice dream. Dining was just wonderful. Food was fabulous! We like picking a different group to dine with each meal if we wanted. We met so many wonderful people. Entertainment was small but really well done. Loved the piano in the bar. The player was really talented. The crew was so helpful and cheerful. Loved the shore excursions. Especially the trip to Josephine and Napoleon's house and Normandy. Monet's Garden was just lovely. The Lourve was crowded and the many stairs were difficult to maneuver, but glad we saw the Mona Lisa, although anticlimactic. Dress was business casual or casual. My husband brought a sport coat and never wore it. No fancy dress for the capitan's dinner. I have told friends and family that we will travel only with Viking. Read Less

Definitely a top-notch cruise ship and cruise line. The pros included friendliness of all staff, ports and scenery (the light presentation at Rouen cathedral at night is a must-see!). Aquavit Terrace for dining in the evening is apparently a well-kept secret. We actually dined there almost as many nights as in the formal dining room....a fabulous experience to enjoy gourmet food al fresco on the bow of the ship while cruising at dusk.....however less than a dozen fellow passengers partook in this option on the nights we dined outside. The cons included having a few tour guides that almost ruined our experience: one on Giverny excursion who liked to hear himself talk, dragged the group along and whose French-accented English was very difficult to understand (and I even speak French). We finally broke away from group and toured garden and house on our own. The second guide on the Normandy excursion was completely offensive as she opted to use the long bus ride to get on her soapbox and offer political opinions that were clearly inappropriate. It takes a lot to offend my husband and he was livid. As much as I would like to say that I would recommend a Viking Cruise to adults over 50 I really feel that if we ever have the opportunity to experience Viking again (and we hope to), it'll be at least ten years before we do so. We're both 56 and were often frustrated by older passengers for whom we had to wait, and slowed down our excursions. I love and enjoy senior travelers but we wanted to pack as much as we could in this once-in-a-lifetime trip, and felt we could have easily done more if we hadn't felt pulled back. Read Less

The entire staff was professional and certainly met all of our needs. This cruise was smaller than the ocean cruises we have been on in the past, but it was more personable. The ship was indeed excellent in finding your way around. The cabin was comfortable. I enjoyed our veranda. It was relaxing sitting with a glass of wine on the veranda watching the beautiful sites. I am an artist, (painter) and have always wanted to visit Giverny and Paris! It was perfect! The ship dining was lovely and intimate affording us to meet new people. There was a variety of dining and the food was exceptional. There were 2 dining options, and we chose the dining room at night with the less formal terrace fro during the day. The specialty cuisine of France and Normandy were beautifully prepared, chosen and presented by the chef and staff. All the workers were friendly, courteous and hard working. Because of my Disability, I would recommend a Veranda cabin which is closer to the center of the ship, as well as it is larger to accommodate my wheel chair. The bathroom was handicap accessible if you are able to walk, though there is a step to go into the bathroom. The room is nicely appointed, clean, maintained, and very quiet. If it is good weather it is lovely to sit out on the veranda and enjoy morning coffee while cruising. However, once at shore, your cabin veranda could face a shore wall, or other ship with no light or privacy to sit out. The tours were varied and wonderful. Unfortunately at times disabilities were not considered well in the planning...Examples being: Buses for tours parked too close to walls to accommodate the width of a wheel chair, sidewalk barriers prevented access to buses. We should have received warning ahead of time in order to not have to rush. Access to land and bus tours, sometimes required everyone having to traverse up to top deck stairs, down and up next ship over stairs because 2 or three ships are docked next to each other. There is no assistance from crew on this so it is necessary for the person travelling with you to facilitate the process. My husband carried the wheelchair, while I climbed the stairs. This took extra time and energy and a warning ahead of time would have been helpful. Seeing Paris, Giverny, Rouen and Normandy Allie Beaches was incredible and the highlights of our trip. Rouen Cathedral Laser Light Show was amazing and not to miss. The cruise brought us everywhere we wanted to go and more! I would do the trip again. Read Less

This trip was a special present to my wife who was celebrating a milestone birthday and special it was thanks to the people at Viking! We had never on been on a river cruise so this was somewhat of an experiment. We had heard about Viking river cruises from the ads and in conversations with friends who had been on Viking river cruises before (including the very one we took--Paris to Normandy with the 3 day extension in Paris) and gave nothing but rave reviews. We chose this particular route because we had been in Paris briefly many years ago and wanted to return. Also, being a gardener, my wife wanted to see Monet's gardens and the gardens at Versailles, as well as the gardens in Paris. The day trip to the Normandy Beaches and the American Cemetery was a plus for me as my father served in Europe after D-Day--it should not be missed by any American, Brit or Canadian. The stops along the way--Giverny, Vernon, Rouen, Les Andelys--and the time spent on the upper deck or on the cabin's veranda were wonderful. (Don't miss the nighttime light show in Rouen). Start to finish the trip was first class--the Viking website is a great resource and if used properly, greatly facilitates the trip; transfers to and from the ship were well organized and minimized the stress usually accompanying foreign travel; the ship was immaculate and well suited to relaxation; the cabin with veranda was comfortable and accommodating; the crew was friendly and eager to help; the food was plentiful, high quality, delicious and included many special dishes (including a special birthday cake on my wife's birthday); the tours were well-planned and well executed with excellent local guides and we didn't feel like we were being rushed around just for the sake of checking off "must see" sites (there was often time available to explore the towns on your own). The 3 extra days in Paris were all we hoped they would be thanks to the friendly guidance of the Viking concierge at the hotel (Ampere). The hotel was small and somewhat removed from the hustle and bustle, but that was no problem. The plus was that a lovely park (Parc Monceau) was within walking distance and we spent our last evening there. There was a Metro station within a block of the hotel and we were able to get around the city with ease after an in-station tutorial by the Viking concierge. She was also of great help planning our days and managed the departure to the airport very efficiently. An unexpected bonus was being greeted at the airport by a Viking representative who literally walked us though the check-in process, saving us time and possibly some grief. All-in-all, the best trip we have ever taken. We've already signed up to take the Lyon & Provence cruise and French Riviera extension next spring. Thanks Viking! Read Less

While it was a relatively new boat, the service of keeping every clean and tidy was very good. Servers were all excellent and enjoyed finding out about their backgrounds. We spent three days in Paris before the cruise started and were able to see a lot of the sights there. One suggestion is to bring in local entertainers in the evenings. Everything went very smoothly. Liked the ability to have input on which flights we were on. Things were handled well during our arrival at Charles de Gaulle airport, at the hotel in Paris and our trip to the embarkation point for the river cruise. We had been looking at Viking cruises for several years. We decided that the year I retired, we would go. We asked friend if they would like to go, and two couples went on the cruise. We chose Paris to Normandy because our fathers had been in WWII, and two had been at Normandy. We chose the pre cruise 3 night stay in Paris, someone who had taken the southern France cruise said it was a good way to escape jet lag before getting on the ship. It sounded good in theory, but we did so much those days, we were pretty tired when we got to the ship. The night we landed, we went to the Moulin Rouge for dinner and a show. The next day we took a walking tour organized by Viking which was excellent. The last night we had dinner at the Eiffel Tower, the next day we were bused to the cruise ship. Checking in was a very easy process, we were led to our cabin and all the amenities in the room were explained to us. I was very pleasantly surprised at the storage, the fit and finish of the room. There was more storage room than in our hotel. That night we had a meeting to meet the crew, Michael Bright, the director; Chef "Ricky"; and Manuel - food services. Each evening Michael told us about the next days activities, Chef Ricky made dinner recommendations and Manuel had the selected Wine. I will say that every day we went with the recommendations and were never disappointed. It was like eating in a 5 star restaurant every evening. Another high point was waiting each morning at breakfast for Manuel to bring out the fresh and still hot croissants. The crew couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful. I will definately take another cruise with Viking. I will mention the low point of the whole experience was flying Iceland Air. I have flown hundreds of thousands of miles for business and have never been as uncomfortable in a plane. The seats were narrow and very thinly padded. I let Viking make the air arrangements, I will try that again but will not fly Iceland Air. Read Less

We had never been to Europe and had heard excellent things about Viking river cruises. We decided to take the Paris to Normandy cruise and are thrilled we did. From the moment we were picked up at Charles De Gaulle Airport, until we were dropped off at the airport the following week, we were treated in the finest manner. The ship was clean and very modern. We had a French balcony room. Though somewhat smaller than we expected, it was always clean and utilizing under the bed storage for our luggage we maximized the size of the room. We appreciated the heated bathroom floor, as well as the excellent quality of toiletries that were always replenished. It was a nice touch to have bottled water in our cabin, replenished daily. We enjoyed our dining experience. The food quality and choices were excellent and we enjoyed our wine choices. We met many delightful dining partners, many of whom we have kept in touch with. The dining staff was excellent and helped make each meal special. We enjoyed having an outdoor breakfast and lunch on the Aquavit Terrace. The buffet choices were plentiful. We enjoyed the entertainment, particularly the pianist and many of the interesting lectures. The cooking class where we learned to make a lemon tart was enjoyable. A highlight of the trip for us was the excellent shore excursions. The program director made sure everything ran smoothly. We found all the tour guides to be excellent with a wealth of information to share. We particularly enjoyed our trip to Monet's Garden and our visit to the American Military cemetery will not be forgotten. We took advantage of some of the special tours, like the trip to The Louvre, Versailles and the tour of Paris at night and they were excellent. This cruise was chosen as a retirement gift to ourselves for my travel companion and me. She wanted to travel and see France and take a Viking cruise. So, I found a cruise that allowed us time in Paris and gave us a taste of the northern French countryside. This cruise allowed us to begin a few days early in Paris to enjoy that wonderful city. Those few days were special and made more special by the Viking assistance in the hotel. The hotel was ideal as a base of operations on those few days and both the Viking representative and the hotel staff went out of their way to allow us to have a great Paris visit. My friend has a gluten allergy and the hotel staff went out of its way to find us restaurants where she could eat. Amazingly, one that they found was about a block from the hotel and wonderful. And, the hotel was convenient to the Metro so all of Paris was within our grasp. The ship was well beyond what I had been told to expect. It was modern, comfortable and inviting. The crew was friendly and attentive and the service was beyond compare. A couple of incidents will explain this feeling. As I mentioned earlier, my friend has a gluten allergy and we informed Viking beforehand about this. From the first meal that we had on board [and on excursions], she was recognized and taken care of. She never had to explain that she had an allergy; it appeared every staff member was aware and sensitive to her needs. She felt like she was being treated like royalty. Also, one of the days of the cruise, my friend was ill and could not participate in the planned excursions. I informed the desk that she would be in bed for the day and they went out of their way to make her comfortable and to make certain that she was fed and provided with water and the beverages to stay hydrated. At one point, I found the cruise director delivering a bowl of soup to her personally. The entire cruise was a journey into the beauty of northern France. Each port, each excursion was eye-opening. The beauty and history of the cities were what I had hoped for and more. I was a history teacher and I learned much from the tour guides. One part of the cruise was a visit to the Normandy Beaches. Even though we were Americans, we decided to take the Commonwealth version of the excursion as we wished to see the Bayeux tapestry. The tapestry was all that I expected it to be; but, I had a profound experience visiting the Commonwealth [Canadian] beaches. The group that we were with was smaller than the American tour; so it allowed us to interact with people who had a deeply personal contact with the D-Day experience. I was moved by their depth of feeling and of the atmosphere that this visit engendered. I would like to add a word of praise for the concierge. Our flights had been arranged through Viking with Air France. On the final days of the cruise, I was informed that there was an Air France strike and our flight arrangements would need to be changed. Working along with the Viking travel office, our concierge spent the better part of two days making certain that our new flight arrangements would "work." He went out of his way for us. One final memory that I will take with me is flowers. The cities were filled with flowers, Monet's Garden was filled with flowers, Versailles and Malmaison were filled with flowers. Flowers were a beautiful background to the entire trip. My friend and I were so pleased with the voyage that we are taking another. This time, though, we are heading to central Europe and the Danube and the Rhine. We are expecting nothing but the best. Read Less

Our friends raved about the Viking and they talked us into going on this trip with them. This was the first Viking Cruise we took and will not be our last. We already booked the Roof of the World cruise with them. It was top notch! Everyone on board was fantastic, friendly and helpful and caring!! We loved our crew! The food was delicious, the ship was spotless and the excursions were great! We did so much. This was Paris to Normandy and every city we stopped in was just lovely, and our guides were full of information. We loved the Rolf and our Captain! We also had the pre trip Paris 3 day add on and then we added the extension to Oxford England, which was outstanding! Viking took care of everything from the minute we landed to the minute we departed, they were with us every step of the way! We loved being pampered!! Thank you again Viking! Read Less

The cruise on the Rolf took us out to the beaches of Normandy. It was a great trip for anyone that is interested in history and WWII specifically. The Program director had a very touching ceremony at Omaha Beach and honored all of the veterans in the group. My husband was one of the honorees and it was one of the few times I have seen him with tears in his eyes. The Rolf was a brand new ship and the crew was handpicked and worked together so well you felt they were family from the first day. The cabins are small but that is expected on a riverboat cruise. The stewards were amazing. Everything was done almost by magic. The food was great and the servers remembered what you liked and provided it without being told. You could not go hungry if you wanted to! The excursions were relevant to the area and very interesting. The local guides made the experience very personal. Some were more difficult to understand than others but they were all very knowledgeable. I would recommend not only this ship but all of the Viking's riverboats. This was the third one that we were on and all were great. We have another one planned for next year. All the crews get to know you and make you feel very special. Read Less
