My husband and I chose this cruise because we both had France on our bucket list. We both wanted to see Paris, I wanted to see Versailles, and he wanted to visit the D-Day landing sites. This was our first river cruise and we fell in love! We spent a lot of time on our verandah watching the beautiful French countryside go by. We enjoyed all our meals, meeting new friends, and being served by an amazing crew. Although the cabin was small, it had plenty of storage. The queen-size bed was very comfortable. I loved that we had fresh bottled water in our room every day, and a cold bottle of water to take on excursions. Dining on the Rolf was always a wonderful experience. From the made-to-order omelets, fresh fruit and fresh pastries each morning to the chef's special regional dishes for dinner, we were always impressed. Everything was well-organized by a well-trained crew and staff. The included excursions were led by knowledgeable guides and were both entertaining and educational. The gardens and home of Claude Monet were exquisite and I loved hearing about the life of the artist. Rouen is a beautiful city with friendly people, and the Joan of Arc memorial was touching. Our trip to the American cemetery at Normandy was a highlight of the trip. Our cruise director had arranged a ceremony at the memorial and then we were given time to stroll among the beautiful graves. Our time aboard the Rolf was a dream come true. It was our first river cruise, but will not be our last! Read Less

Our cabin was very clean and efficient. Dining was a very good experience. We enjoyed the food and getting to join other couples on the trip. The service was excellent. All of our excursions were well planned and the tour guides and bus drivers were very good. Especially enjoyed the head tour director who informed us every evening as to what to expect the next day. He was very entertaining. Our trip with Viking was one of the best experiences anyone could have had. Viking did not disappoint. They did exactly what they said they were going to do and they made our vacation one of the best. We certainly would consider sailing with Viking River Cruises again. Read Less

Nothing Compares to Paris in the spring. My sister and I had planned a different cruise the year before but due to an accident we cancelled the trip. (A word of advice BUY insurance). This cruise meant so much to both of us. I cannot praise the crew enough. From the moment we landed we were treated like VIP’s. The ship was beautifully decorated, the food outstanding, the staff excellent. A special shout out to Mimi our cruise director, Nicky who sang and played every evening. The tours were delightful, especially the Giverny where the home of Monet gardens are located. Words cannot begin to describe the beauty there. After the cruise my sister and I spent 5days in Paris, we arranged this on our own. Paris, what’s not to love about Paris, it pulses life, culture , architecture, history, the people were very kind and friendly. Viva la France. Ship come and ship go, there are large ships and small ships but friendship is the best ship of all. Thank you for a memorable time. Read Less

We took our grandson on the cruise of his choice as his graduation from Middle School. He could have chosen any one of many cruises with Viking River or another cruise line, but he wanted to see both Paris and Normandy. He was not disappointed, nor were we. He had studied beforehand so he knew many of the places we went to and that added to his enjoyment, I'm sure. Our flight arrived so early, that Viking provided us with an addition excursion for four hours downtown with an excellent map in hand. It was wonderful. Then we ended our trip with the Night tour of the City of Lights. It could not have been better. We had photos of the Eifel Tower by day and by night, close by and at a distance. We could not have asked for more. I should add that each port satisfied his and our interest in historical sites. Words fails me in describing how moving the Normandy portion was. My grandson appreciated the friendliness of the crew for a not often seen teenager onboard. The dining stewards were especially helpful in answering his questions. He also was elated to choose the watercolor painting class because he is interested in art. Next year our granddaughter will begin researching her choice of river cruises and we can do it all again! Our cabin was a tad small, but we seemed to be in it only for sleeping. A river cruise was a good fit for us because it was easy on and easy off with little time wasted on the procedure. We also appreciated the variety of meals, some fitting our locale. Read Less

Great opportunity to meet new friends. Actually reconnected with friends we had not seen in twenty plus years. Would like to have a little more evening entertainment. Piano player was good and the tour director was very informative and enjoyable to hear their comments. Table servers were the same each day. We got to know them and they called us by name. Also we’re willing to do special food orders when requested. We have recommended Viking many times to other friends and have already book another river cruise over a year in advance. I would recommend you reduce the number of words required in the feedback section otherwise travelers will probably avoid providing feedback. Generally one can express their positive comments in less than 150 words. Read Less

The food was super good, well presented whether buffet or table service. Viking handled air arrangments. Met us at the Paris airport and quickly got us to the ship. The excursions included in the tour package were all we needed to keep us well occupied. The tour guides were very knowledgable of the areas where they were leading. The only extra excrusion we booked was "Paris at Night" because we wanted to see the Eiffel Tower at night. This was one of the highlights of the entire trip. The most impressive part of the trip was the opportunity to see Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery, certainly a moving experience. Outstanding service, food, and shore excursions. We had been on one other Viking cruise (16 years before) and, if anything, everything was even better. The staff is efficient, polite, and friendly. The ship is well maintained. The excursions (both those included and those that are extra) are well-chosen, and the local guides were all excellent. This was their Paris and the Heart of Normandy trip: The standout was Monet's Gardens at Giverny. We got there early enough to avoid the worst of the crowds so we could really appreciate the beauty of the house, gardens, and town. There were many demonstrations (cooking, watercolors), lectures (Joan of Arc, Impressionism), and entertainers (singers and musicians) and two game nights to keep everyone entertained. Those we attended were both fun and informative. The food was excellent. One member of our party has a food allergy (gluten) and the waitstaff was very helpful. (This allergy was also discreetly communicated to the restaurant where we ate lunch the day we went to Normandy.) We are saving up for another Viking cruise. Read Less

Referred to Joan of Arc as “Joanie on a pony” an insult to all concerned Food was not of the quality I expected. Waited in line at the unorganized buffet only to find the main course was hot dogs and kraut. Room (least expensive) had an on and off sewer smell. Didn’t, bother to complain. They advise spend less time getting there and more time being there. Shipwas 45 minutes from downtown Paris. Visit to Normandy beaches was TWO HOURS by bus Certainly can not recommend this cruise especially given the premium price Won’t choose this carrier again. Way over hyped. From the very first contact with Viking reps at the Airport in Paris, Viking's service was outstanding. The ship was immaculate and very hospitable. The small size and "free range dining" allowed us to meet many new friends and share experiences. The food on board was absolutely wonderful...ALL MEALS. The service was extraordinary. Our Cruise Director, Lionel was the best. He was truly a showman and put together great entertainment packages for us throughout the cruise. The excursions were very well planned and coordinated. He made a great cruise superb! Don't know what you're paying him, but it's not enough!!!!Each guide we had was terrific, in that ,they were very knowledgeable and very responsive. There seemed to be the right amount of free time and guided tours if you so desired. I do wish there had been more time at the Beaches of Normandy, but we do understand the travel/time restraints on all. We had previously taken the cruise on the Rhine, so we were excited to take the Seine River Cruise. If you have no problems, you can have a great time on a Viking River Cruise. Unfortunately, they decided to route us from New York City, via Dublin, to Paris. Our Delta flight was delayed five hours because of lack of staff, so we missed two connecting flights. We called the weekend staff at Viking and were told that the flight problems weren't their problem, and they couldn't help in any way. We had to stay in Dublin overnight, and when we finally arrived in Paris, we had to take a taxi to the ship. Viking sent someone to pick us up, but they told us that they did not send an escort, and the escort did not see us. The ship does not dock in Paris, it is about a half hour to the City. When we finally got to the ship, we were told that people have these transportation problems all the time, and we should be happy we finally arrived. We missed the first night and day of the vacation, and I was so aggravated that I had a hard time enjoying anything. Viking did not even offer us a drink as compensation. When we arrived home yesterday, a Viking representative offered us a voucher for a future trip. We will never use Viking again. They used to be an excellent company, but I guess they decided to skimp on customer service. Beware! Read Less

This was, however, our first experience of an "Explorer Suite". It was truly awesome. Nothing was overlooked. Chilled champagne on check in, mini bar, flowers, fruit, snacks, a generous double aspect lounge with side and rear balcony, Juliet balcony on the bedroom, roomy wet room style shower.....absolute luxury. Rolf is one of the new fleet of long ships which are all beautifully appointed. Paris was wonderful as always and the cruise includes some fabulous places you might otherwise never find. The excursions using local guides and the quiet vox machines are always excellent. On-board entertainment is a little limited because these are small ships but by the end of a great day low key entertainment works fine. Recommended Read Less

My wife and I were looking for a memorable trip to celebrate our recent retirements. Our Viking River Cruise from Paris to Normandy proved to be the perfect solution. We chose to extend the trip with the 3 day Paris pre-package. From the minute we were met at the airport Viking provided exactly what was advertised, a worry free trip. We stayed at the Rochester Hotel which is a minutes walk from the Champs Elysee, the metro and many attractions. The hotel was beautiful, spacious and well provisioned. Breakfast was delicious, with everything one would want to start the day (European and American). We especially enjoyed sitting in the cozy bar each evening, meeting our co-travelers and talking to Vincent, the bar tender. The itinerary in Paris included a walking tour with metro instruction as we visited Le Marais with the ritzy Place du Voge and the Jewish Quarter. We also visited Montmartre with it's sweeping views of Paris from it's perch above the city. The tours were fantastic and helped us to orient to the city so that we were able to easily get around during our ample free time. It was fun to try the local food, wine and delicious patisseries. We found the Parisians to be extremely accomodating and friendly. Movement to the ship, docked in Le Pecq a Paris suburb, was again seamless and we were greeted by the amazing Rolf staff. One cannot help but notice the expert leadership and training provided by Viking as we always felt a general happiness/professionalism from the entire team. This happiness magically extends to the passengers, making for a refreshing feeling of civility so missing on some of the larger cruise ships. We have to acknowledge MiMi the cruise director who is a dynamo with her finger on the pulse of not only her guests needs but the smooth functioning of the crew ad tour guides. From here, every excursion: St. Germain en Laye, Rouen, Monet's Garden, Normandy, Les Andelys, Versailles and Malmaison were led by licensed tour guides on comfortable motor coaches. It was nice to have the organized tour in each town and then to have time to explore and shop on our own. Everyone should try the French Chocolates with award winning shops at each port. The food on the Rolf was memorably good. The week went by way too fast and we were sorry to leave the ship and all of our many new friends. My husband and I decided to extend our trip to the Loire Valley on our own and Viking graciously helped us with transportation to the train station. The flight home was smooth as well. Paris is always a draw but we were particularly focused on seeing Normandy. This cruise did all of this and more. The time spent in Paris was fun and well spent. We were quickly caught up on France's great history. The Louvre and Notre Dame were great. Traveling on the river to Normandy presented great excursions. Visiting the farm in Rouen was a particular highlight and Monet's gardens and home were a real treat. Normandy was a very special experience, especially the visit to Omaha Beach. Looking at the geography of the beach, one has to wonder how our great soldiers were able to overcome the odds by making it up that wide expanse of a beach and then up the hills beyond. This has to be seen to understand how difficult a time they must of had. The ceremony at the Memorial and the walk through the cemetery fulfilled our purpose for taking this cruise. As always, the food was wonderfully prepared and served. Our servers quickly became our friends and their entertaining capability made each meal more than just a food experience. The ease of coming and going throughout the whole trip is much appreciated. Read Less

Normandy (and Paris) have been on our must see list for some time. This presented the perfect opportunity to check off one more on the bucket list. Some free time in Paris and a day trip to Normandy were exactly what we was needed, although I must say, more time is needed to explore the museums and sites of the Normandy beaches. The overall cruise was wonderful with excellent service and delicious on board meals. Alexie, our primary waiter, was extremely efficient and very entertaining! The Viking Rolf was well appointed and very comfortable. Our French Balcony state room served us well and had everything needed for a comfortable night's rest. This particular river cruise did not showcase a great amount of river cruising, which was fine. We therefore had more time in various ports that provided the opportunity for additional local exploration, as well as some very enlightening shore excursions. Highly recommend! Read Less

In general, cruises have never appealed to us. However, the idea of being on a river and getting off each day to explore and the specific itinerary convinced us to give it a try. We were not disappointed. In fact, we had a trip beyond our expectations. The local guides were superb! We enjoyed their in-depth knowledge as well as the personal anecdotes they shared. The ship's crew was an unanticipated surprise. Although we expected them to be polite and helpful, this crew was totally engaged with the passengers and really provided an extra level of service and comfort. Being somewhat of a neatnik and a planner, I was delighted by the level of organization and all the little things that were planned for and thought of by the crew and Viking. Last but not least at all, France and all the excursions were fantastic! We went non-stop and enjoyed a mix of included excursions, purchased excursions and exploring on our own. The food was excellent and provided a lot of choice for all palates. I'm already thinking about where my Viking River Cruise will take me. Read Less

We were greeted at the airport and quickly transported to the boat at Le Pecq, just outside Paris proper. Upon our arrival we were impressed with the quick check-in and friendly staff. The two main reasons we picked this particular cruise was to visit Monet's property in Giverny and the D Day landing sites. Both moving and unforgettable. The other sites and cities were like the "whipped cream" on top of the cake. Vernon, Rouen, Les Andelys, were all delightful and a wonderful experience. All in all one of the best trips my wife and I have ever experienced. The room and the overall ship accommodations were Five Star! Our meals were memorable to say the least. Just a wonderful time. This was not our first Viking river cruise. Viking is everything we have come to expect. We were pleased with everything about the river cruise itself. Paris, not so much. I had been warned the Parisians weren't friendly and that was certainly the case. I was actually threatened with arrest for trying to take a camera into the Arc de Triumphe! Yeah, a camera. I would highly recommend the the river cruise though. It made up for the rude Parisians. Now, for the river cruise. I'm sure some people probably don't like the fact that Viking berths in La Pecq. Quite frankly, we didn't have a problem with that. It was certainly quieter than being in Paris. With the provided shuttle there was ample time to walk the streets of Paris if you choose to do so. The cruise was everything that we have come to expect from Viking. The cruise director, Mimi, was part of what made this cruise so enjoyable. And, the hotel manager, Bea, was sure to make your stay enjoyable. Contrary to Paris the locals in the rest of France were friendly and enjoyable to interact with. It was also nice that the boat stayed docked for an extra day to give you time to explore Paris. The first stop was Vernon and a bus ride to Giverney to Monet's gardens and house. Even though it was October and just weeks before the gardens closed there were still plenty of flowers in bloom. The town of Giverney is one of those quaint villages that you imagine France to be. The next stop was Rouen where we stayed another 2 days. The day you dock there is an excursion through the streets of Rouen and some of the history. Rouen is best known as the place where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Some of the historic buildings and the location of the execution are still preserved or in use. The second day is the trip to Normandy to see the beaches and the cemetery where the brave troops were laid to rest. It is very touching and emotional experience. Viking does some special things that I won't mention because you should be surprised and humbled just as we were. The Rolf was very clean and every crew member we had contact with always had a smile on their face and a greeting. The boat is laid out really well and it is very easy to get to the public rooms within an easy walk. The cabins are smaller than large ocean liners but are very functional and we thought had more than enough room to be comfortable. Honestly, you don't spend much time in your room. The food in the dining room was great. Some of the food can be exotic but we were always able to find something good to eat. The dining room and lounge staff are some of the same crew and their attention to your needs is much more than any ocean cruise. Because there are not too many people on board some of the crew will know your name within a day or two. Overall, we had a great time and I would recommend this cruise to anybody wanting to visit the Normandy beaches. We can't wait to take our next cruise. Read Less

Twenty years ago I visited Paris and went to the D-Day beaches as well as to other places in between with my mother and sister. I had always wanted my husband to see the same places, because I knew that he would fall in love with France and enjoy himself immensely. As a fiftieth anniversary celebration as well as a great start to our retirements, I booked this cruise. My husband had such a great time that--two days after we got home--he said, "I have to go back to Paris...book another cruise". I have.....and in May it will be Prague to Paris with extra days in Paris added. Having never been on a cruise before, I was eager to go, as Viking has a stellar reputation. In every respect, everything was top-drawer....food, interesting fellow travelers, tour guides, the activities director (Lional). Even though I had visited many of these iconic places previously, I learned new things this time and went to some different historic D-Day sites that I had not visited on the earlier trip. I enjoyed not having to dress up....no formal nights; the macarons at the coffee stations; the cheese course at dinner; spectacular desserts; and the scenery as we cruised. You will also never get seasick. Were it not for scenery passing by, you would never know that the river boat is sailing. After the next trip, on to Russia! Read Less

I get sea sick, but you cannot feel the ship moving at all even through a lock. The service was amazing. Our flight got in early so we were on the boat at 7:30 AM. We had a lovely breakfast and then our room was ready. They had expedited it since we were on board already. Beata, the hotel manager, was on top of everything. Lionel, our program director, was so efficient and best of all -- so much fun. I am a retired European History teacher and the guides were very knowledgable. Not one slip up or mistake. Ann Marie was our guide to a side trip to Honfleur in Normandie and she was excellent. I would not have changed a thing about the itinerary. The Normandy beaches were just plain amazing and terrifying at the same time. I have no idea who anyone survived. Viking put on a special ceremony for us at the American cemetery and we were each given a rose to put on a grave. I cried the entire time. It was very very moving. At the end of the cruise, we had signed up for the three day extension to the Loire Valley. We were the only people who signed up and we had our own private Mercedes van, driver, and guide. I think the rest of the people wanted to see Hyclere House where Downton Abbey was filmed and I had just been to UK the month before. The Loire trip was like a dream. Pertrilla, our guide, was wonderful and so knowledgable about the chateaus and cathedrals. David, our driver, was terrific. I always end up driving on vacation since we usually go to UK and I am used to right hand drive. It was so nice not to worry about a thing. In conclusion, I cannot say enough good things about Viking. Attention to detail, fabulous service, well planned trip -- it was all there and I was so relaxed at letting professionals handle every aspect of our trip! Read Less

We had an absolutely fabulous time on this cruise. We have only done Carnival before, so this was a bit of a change. Our party was my husband and me, his parents and our three children, our ages range from 73-12. Everyone had a great time. The included shore excursions were fantastic, and the staff was AMAZING!! Loved them all but especially Peter, Dragos, Boris, David, Lionel and Bea. The saddest part about leaving day was leaving them and I have to say we were a bit jealous seeing the new guests come on. Our plane was 2 hours late and Viking had a shuttle van waiting at the airport for us. It was a quick trip to the dock and the adventure began. All the stops are fabulous but don't miss the Rouen included tour during the day, and then be sure to go back to town in the evening for the light show on the Cathedral! The guides at each stop were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and the audio devices work very well. We have sailed Carnival many times and you have to pay for every excursion (Carnival led or not obviously) so having one or two included every day is great. Monet's garden is a not to miss. Actually, they all are. Viking hit this one out of the park! The food was very good, the different cheeses every day were very good. David the Piano Man is awesome and Peter is the best bartender ever. We had 3 port window rooms and my in-laws had a verandah room. We were perfectly fine with the window room and we were NEVER in our room. If we go again I would book the same room. The verandah room was nice because it had a sitting area but we would never have used it. What we didn't know until the last day was that room had beer and pop in the refrigerator and ours did not. It didn't matter though because we bought the drink package, which is a great deal. Read Less
