We too had a bad experience due to a broken lock. We shared the horrible port with 3 other Viking ships. Cement factory working through the night. Homeless family living under bridge. Not the picturesque view we imagined to have. We spent three days traveling by bus from boat at dock. Sunday, we traveled 20 minutes each way to see sites ofcity of Nuremberg. Then Monday, Nuremberg to Regensburg(4 hours round trip) - back to horrible port, then Nuremberg to Passau (7 hours round trip)- back to horrible port, then on Wednesday finally on a bus once again Nuremberg to Ybbs(6 hours) to be transferred to Viking Gulliveg. Viking knew on June 22 locks were broken and contingency plans needed to be made. This was the best they could come up with?? Shame on them! More time on bus than traveling the river. Their response? A voucher to use for future travel. No credit for "time served" on buses. No apologies. Just matter of fact.. this is what we are offering. This was our first river cruise. Not sure what was more disappointing...The broken lock with our "port view", Viking's "best" contingency plan of more than 20+ hours on a bus, or Viking's response. Read Less

Family Christmas cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest....what a wonderful way to experience the best Christmas Markets in all of Europe. A must for any family wanting to share and create Holiday memories. The Christmas markets are an absolute must, with handmade goods including Christmas ornaments and souvenirs, local foods, mulled wine and great beers. Add in the local history and culture of each destination and it creates unbelievable memories. River locks along the Danube are also a fun and interesting experience as you travel along the river watching the scenery. Viking does it better than anyone! Great cabin accommodations, shore excursions that are included, enjoyable and fun, fabulous service and staff, nice dining and drink options and a great way to see and experience Europe. The ships are comfortable, modern and beautiful. Very relaxed cruising, with no pretentious atmosphere. This was our second Christmas cruise with Viking and we look forward to traveling more with Viking in the future! Read Less

We booked this far in advance in order to see both the sights and the Christmas Markets. Viking did a great job keeping us informed about the low water levels and the workarounds (buses). But even after the “final” ship/bus itinerary was announced, we were fortunate to get enough last-minute rain (8 feel of water added to the river in 48 hours) that the original all-cruise itinerary could be maintained. Kudos to Viking for what had to be a lot of behind-the-scenes logistics! The three-day pre-cruise addition in Prague was well worth it, and the Art Noveau Palace hotel had a great location (easy walk to the Old City Square), excellent room amenities (more electrical outlets than a typical American hotel), and a fabulous breakfast buffet (including multiple gluten free and vegan offerings). This being our second Viking river cruise, we expected top notch friendly shipboard service from the crew and first-rate food. We were not disappointed in either of those two respects. The one-star rating for Fitness & Recreation is not Viking’s fault. It was just too cold to use the sun deck at all, which was empty throughout the trip. Read Less

We are very dissatisfied with the overall ‘cruise’ experience and the compensation offered by Viking to make up for the changes in our anticipated vacation - a 7 day CRUISE on the Romantic Danube River. Our group of three couples was aware of the low water situation a week prior to the scheduled sailing. We contacted Customer Relations and spoke to Megan Miulli on the Monday, August 13th requesting an opportunity to cancel our trip and plan our own itinerary since we were all committed to non-refundable airfare. Customer Relations refused to allow us a full refund prior to the trip and requested that we travel to Europe, embark the ship, and then file a complaint within 24 hours if we were still dissatisfied. We were officially notified by Viking Tuesday, August 14th at 6:16 p.m. that water levels were low and that the itinerary had been changed. We again reached out to Megan and left a voice message that we were interested a refund and scheduling our own trip. We did not hear back from her before it was time for us to travel. We flew to Europe and took the train to Nuremberg. Fortunately we took an early train or we would have missed the bus to the ship. We quickly realized how disorganized, stressful and disappointing the trip was going to be. The refreshments at the Le Méridien Grand Hotel Nürnberg were second-rate and were depleted when we arrived. We received mixed instructions from the Viking representatives on hand, an apparent foreshadowing of the days ahead of us. The bus left earlier than we were earlier told, we had no time to explore Nürnberg. After a 2 hour bus ride, with no comfort stop, we arrived in Passau and embarked the Egil on August 18, 2018. Upon arrival we discovered our cabin’s view was blocked by another ship. We did however have a great view of the other ship’s guests dirty socks drying on their deck chair. Eventually the ship moved and we had a view, sadly our friends who were on the other side of the ship now had a blocked view. The night of the 18th the on board crew relayed to us the itinerary changes for the next day. They said they were unable to tell us about the rest of the cruise days because conditions downstream were volatile and changing. We were told that the excursions the next day would be leaving at 8:00 a.m. by motor coach. Unlike most of our fellow passengers we are not retirees. We are employed individuals who came on vacation to relax and get away from the stresses of our busy work lives. We anticipated relaxing evenings on board, cocktails in hand, long restful nights of sleep, awakening leisurely in port before excursions in the adjacent port. Getting up at 6:30 a.m. was not any of our ideas of a good time. None of us wanted to get on a bus first thing in the morning. We therefore skipped the excursions on the 19th and filed an official complaint, as your brochures instruct passengers to do, within the first 24 hours of embarking. Hotel Manager Davis Thomas relayed our complaint to Customer Relations via email that day. On Sunday, August 19th, Mr. Thomas relayed to us that because the water levels were out of the control of Viking Cruises, no refund of our expenses would be given. We were very disappointed and frustrated with the lack of refund or financial compensation offered. Viking’s offer of 25 percent off a future cruise was completely a slap in the face. We wanted to get off of the boat, not think about planning a return cruise! We wanted to get off and derive our own itinerary. We are very capable of doing so and it would have allowed us to have the relaxing, stress-free vacation we anticipated. While we realize that the water levels are out of control of Viking, what was in Viking's control was the forthcoming communication of information and/or the opportunity to offer financial compensation that would have helped to make us feel less trapped and less taken advantage of. It was very difficult to have our itinerary communicated to us piecemeal by the crew and we feel strongly that this was done intentionally. When we arrived in Budapest we saw a Viking ship that we were told had been stuck there for a month! So, Viking was aware of the water conditions downstream and was not forthcoming with that information. Our trip was not relaxing. We spent many hours on motor coaches. We spent only 1½ days cruising. We were deprived of hours of relaxation on board that we had looked forward to for over a year. We came home stressed, frustrated and feeling that we had been taken advantage of by Viking Cruises. Our outreach to Viking has been just as stressful as the trip. They first offered 25% off a future cruise, then 50% off a future cruise, and then finally $500 with the condition that we sign a non-disclosure statement. Obviously, those offers have been declined in favor of informing as many people as we can so that others will make more informed decisions regarding who they cruise with. Where to begin?!?! It was disappointing from beginning to end. We actually "river cruised" 1 1/2 days versus the 7 days we were expecting. We were bussed around, lied to, stuck in an industrial "port" for three days, had our excursions cancelled (and only told "Viking is not offering these excursions at this time") A refund for the excursions that we paid for still has not been received after almost SIX months! I know there is a lawsuit from one of the travelers on our ship. We sent a letter to the head of customer relations, but guess what: we didn't get any response. They do NOT take care of their customers and blame everything on low water levels that they can't control.....which has been going on a LONG time. This is their business! They need to understand what customers expect and treat them fairly!! I can't recommend this company. Do your homework and read reviews carefully! Read Less

European heat wave while we were there. The excursions were incredibly hot temperature wise, so much so, that I had to take frequent breaks whenever I could find shade. We were there during a drought of sorts so we were not moving for the last three days. That's fine; they don't have control over that; I completely understand that, but it felt like the excursions were then just thrown together and some were cancelled, of course. A few of our excursions included a local meal...the food was just not good (I'm being polite) which included the Sound of Music tour lunch. It was so incredibly hot during these lunches, as well, that I couldn't enjoy the food. The places we went were nice, but no cool interior air. I wasn't happy with 7:00pm dinner time. I would have liked a choice, at least, to dine earlier, but I knew this going in. I thought it would be ok, But dinner was usually over around 9:00. I will say this...they have great food choices, but when I asked the waiter one night to have my salmon cooked medium rare (as it was completely overcooked the day before) he replied with "I have no control over that; they all go in at the same time." I didn't like that response, but took my chances, and yes, it was overcooked again. I just didn't order that again. Sorry, Viking, it was too hot, but I know you don't have any control over that. They do have an amazing cruise director, Oliver. The bartenders were outstanding. The housekeeping service was also great. Read Less

This was an anniversary gift to ourselves. Clearly a gorgeous part of the world and to see it from the river was very special. The cruise itinerary had been changed because of low river water and we wondered if the changes would make us regret our fortunes but alas, Viking's extended effort to make us happy worked and we had no complaints. I commend their staff and crew for their dedication and diligence. Our cruise director Oliver deserves special mention for his professionalism and unflappable demeanor the entire cruise. The cook and his team deserved applause too for never failing to delight us with fabulous food treats in the restaurant and aquavit terrace. Our cabin service was excellent. We always had clean bottled water delivered to our room to drink. They must have straightened our room several times a day because it was always magically neat and clean whenever we returned. I loved the ports we visited and the shore trips were well organized. It felt good to feel pampered for a week. Good job Viking. Read Less

Several friends took this same cruise on the Romantic Danube months before; they just raved about how great it was; that we just had to go. So glad we did! We heeded their great advice of arriving a day early and staying over an extra night! How relaxing! In addition to all of the cruise members performing outstanding, Oliver, our cruise director, went way above and beyond to each and every guests. His last night entertaining performance was way above the top of the entertainment bar! Whatever Viking cruise lines is paying him now; his salary should be doubled! All of the knowledgeable local tour guides provided excellent, insightful, very personal glimpses of each port we were in. The ear pieces, after touching the "lollipop" to activate, was a great idea! The nightly dual food menu options were great. Especially when the Chef offered local cuisine he purchased during our port stay. We always welcomed and generally went with what our waiter, Bob, recommended. Read Less

Our friends, celebrating their 50th Anniversary, invited us to join them on this cruise. My husband gets seasick so we were a bit nervous, but decided to go. The river was calm and usually we didn’t realize the boat was even moving. The cabin was smaller than we expected, but everything was well thought out. The entire crew was excellent; personable, professional, and friendly. The included tours were excellent, though we thought all tours should be included in the price rather than offer extra charge tours daily that often had conflicting times with the included tours. WiFi was frustrating, but we expected that it might be a problem. The food was good and there were a variety of selections each meal. Our waiters were excellent. A suggestion is to serve small plates on the Bavarian night as the rush to the buffet of the entire dining room at the same time was awful that one night. Every evening before dinner our program director, Oliver would give a little talk explaining the next day’s activities etc. He was just great, handling everything with ease, answering all questions, and providing humor and entertainment. We would definitely do another river cruise if we saw one that went to cities we might want to visit. Read Less

My Wife and I chose this particular cruise for several reasons. We both have motion issues when it comes to ocean voyages, so we hoped the river cruise would be more comfortable for us and it was very smooth. Another key attraction to this particular cruise was the availability of a french balcony room. With our quick decision to take a cruise, it was great to secure this great room. The room was snug as expected, but more than met our needs. Storage for suitcases under the bed was a huge feature and storage in general was more than adequate. I also thought the bathroom was very well designed to give the user as much elbow room as possible. Our room was well insulated for noise and very quiet. The ship, Egil, was reserved elegance, classy, not showy. Perfectly designed for giving the passengers a wonderful environment for river cruising. I can't say enough about the crew and staff. Very professional, helpful and friendly, not a combination you always find. We enjoyed getting to know several of the staff members on a personal basis. The food was excellent. Breakfast was a huge feast. They covered all the bases. Lunch was light, as it should be, but very well done. Dinner was delightful every night. I had the "local" meal every dinner and was wonderful. The wine and beer selections were more than adequate. We decided to go with the beverage package--it worked out well for us. The excursions were fantastic. Absolutely loved Budapest and the tour. Some excursions were better than others, but we enjoyed them all. Can't wait to take another cruise with Viking. Read Less

The ship was spotless and well maintained. We did explore Budapest for two days prior to embarking on our cruise. Friends have asked if we'd go on another river cruise -- without a doubt! We were treated royally from the start to the end of our trip. We had a little glitch regarding our return travel arrangements, but Viking resolved our issues accordingly. We chose this cruise because of the Interesting ports to visit. We added the pre and post extensions to Budapest and Prague. Absolutely loved the section of Budapest where our hotel was located. The Hilton Budapest Hotel was excellent! Lovely room and complimentary breakfast. Best breakfast buffet I have ever seen! The Hilton Prague was not so great. Not a good part of town. The hotel itself needs lots of updating. However, the breakfast buffet was excellent. Hilton knows how to do food! The Budapest Viking Host was excellent. He was informative and professional. He gave us great tips. The Prague Viking Hosts were lackadaisical and didn’t seem knowledgeable. The included tours were very interesting. The guides did their jobs well. I wish we had chosen more extra excursions because they offered more in-depth information. Our Ship program director, Oliver, was excellent and entertaining. The ship’s food was very good. We had been considering a river cruise with a group of close friends for several years. Other friends had already taken a Viking river cruise and had nothing but praise for the experience. So on May 26 a group of 12 of us sailed on the Viking Egil for a Romantic Danube cruise. The staff onboard was terrific, particularly our Program Director Oliver Grozner, and our waitresses Julie and Jesse. The food was excellent and the service very attentive. Most of us purchased the Silver Spirits package and the selection of wines and cocktails was outstanding. The excursions were very interesting and educational and I felt that the guides were all very knowledgeable. The sole exception would be Szentendre (outside of Budapest) which we felt to be a tourist trap We extended our cruise on both ends with 3 extra days in Prague and 2 in Budapest, both beautiful old cities with many great sites to visit. Our hotel in Prague was the Art Nouveau Palace and was very nice. The hotel in Budapest was the Hilton Budapest City, not quite up to par. The ice machine on our floor was broken and there was no safe in our room. Returned home exhausted but extremely happy with our experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the destinations on the Danube River. We started in Nuremberg, went to Krems, Vienna, and finished in Budapest. Viking does an excellent job with the on-board services. We thought the staff through all the stations was excellent (Front Desk, Waitress, Restaurant Servers, and particularly the Program Cruise Director). Be sure to sign up for the Silver Server package (allows you to have all types of on-board wine, beer, coffee, and liquor). The evenings were wonderful - - after dinner we went to the lounge where Viking put on some brief entertainment (about 30 minutes), and then the piano musician (and a few additional instruments) played any requests. The evening winds down about 11 to 11:30 PM, so there is no disco going all night long. This is not a young adult cruise - - it is targeted for people aged 50 to 75, who are physically in good condition to take part in the excursions & sight-seeing in each town. The only 'children' on the cruise were a few college students, who were with their parents. Read Less

Viking was amazing in arranging arrival and departure and all activities during our cruise. The ship was perfect, service impeccable, entertainment with Oliver above and beyond. Our cabin with veranda was well designed and very comfortable. Sitting on the veranda as we moved down the river, often so close to the banks I could hear the birdsong, was like being on a huge canoe with no paddling! Going thru the locks was especially interesting for a first time river cruiser. Excursions were well planned and the guides were excellent and very knowledgeable. We loved to dine on the outdoor patio at the front of the ship. And during the cruise we met a group of fun, adventurous couples that made the cruise especially fun. I am still in touch with most of them. We are eager to take another river cruise and Viking will be our first choice. Read Less

People left boat at 3 am and rolled luggage over our heads. We had that room as it was the last one available when we signed up. Don't pay for a balcony as Viking double docks and triple docks ships so you can't use your balcony and not be about 3 feet from the ship parked next to you. Nice. This was our first Viking river cruise, and will not be our last. The cities visited were beautiful and fascinating, and all the excursions were great, save one. The food was very good, but not quite as delicious as the ocean cruises we have been on, although we liked the fact that local dishes were on the menu daily, along with some staples like roast chicken, fish, and steak. The ship is every modern and up to date. The service was superb throughout the ship. The evening entertainment was a "piano man" and his computer, which got pretty boring quickly. On two nights, Viking brought in local entertainers, which was fine if you like Opera. We were very disappointed with the value realized during the "Hueringen Evening" excursion, which was supposed to be a local celebration of the wine harvest. Poor wine, little food, and very poor entertainment. When we complained, Viking tried to make it right. Don't let me negative comments scare you off, I still rated it a 5/5, and we WILL be returning. So many people have asked me what I liked best about our Danube River cruise, and I respond the variety of experiences made available by Viking. We got to visit small towns and large cities, explore magnificent cathedrals and humble churches, linger over extravagant meals and linger even longer over simply delicious cups of hot chocolate. Never was there a boring day because Viking thoughtfully planned for, allowed for variety in excursions and free time. So the ports of call were the visual highlights of the trip, and the Viking crew was the pleasant auditory component. From Oliver’s witty pre-dinner evening talks to guides’ riveting commentaries to waiters’ attention to detail and engaging personal conversation, there was always something going on to keep your attention and wondering what joys lay ahead. The only suggestion for improvement that I think Viking could consider is installing more soundproofing materials in the dining room. Conversation was difficult during the dinner hours. We booked this trip over a year ago, chose the room we wanted and we chose perfectly. We had room 324, it was one of the larger rooms, a bedroom and sitting room, two TVs, a much larger shower, very comfortable. The Stewart was in twice a day, restocking the fridge, changing the fruit tray out, replenishing the diet cola and water, he left the wine and champagne just in case we changed our minds and decided to have some. The beds were comfortable and you could set the temperature for each room. The balcony was large enough for two to sit on, and a pair of binoculars were in the room. There is a coffee station on the third floor just outside the lounge, several different coffee selections are available plus hot water for tea and hot chocolate. There is always pastries or cookies provided in baskets in case you get the nibbles during the day. The loung is where you meet up with fellow passengers and the cruise director each night, he runs through the next day’s activities and this is where you find out about the included excursions and optional excursions. We ate all our meals in the dining room, the breakfast had many selections to choose from, from porridge to scrambled eggs, fresh made omlets, toast, pastries, fruit, or you could order off a menu, French toast etc. For lunch they had soup, sandwiches, salads, at the buffet area there was usually a pasta dish, fresh made, or again, you could order off a menu, usually from a selection of two items. Dinner was fantastic, each night there was a different selection, or again you could order off the menu, I did have the steak a few times from the menu, as it was very delicious, ALWAYS a great dinner and the wait staff were fantastic, if you wanted to taste something from the menu, but you had taken the buffet, they brought it to you right away, always, ALWAYS there with water, wine, coffee anything you wanted, you got, can’t say enough good things about them The included tours were very good, nice guides very informative then you would have the rest of the day to discover the cities on your own. May I suggest, if you have on board credits, and you plan on purchasing items from the ships gift store, used your credits early, as we found out, they don’t replenish the items, and I was disappointed twice on items that I wanted to get. When it came time to leave, Viking took us to Prague for our cruise extension, they provided shuttles from our hotel to the centre of the city all day and until late in the evenings, every hour, and when it came time to leave for the airport, a guide came with us on the tour bus, checked us in at our airline, provided us with a box of food as we left the hotel so early and pointed us in the right direction to security, always, they were always there for our needs, what ever we thought we might need or desire, can’t say enough good things about the viking crew. When you returned from the included excursions there was always staff waiters no to greet you and offer either a small hot chocolate to warm you up, or a small treat to help tide you over, totally awesome Read Less

The cabin was very clean and maintained clean throughout the whole trip. Beds are comfortable and the food was excellent. Service provided by the crew members was beyond my expectation. I really wish to give 10 stars out of 5 - I would definitely recommend Viking Cruise to anyone who is considering sailing. The cruise ship sails so smoothly that you can't even realize that it is sailing. Food was served fast during lunch and dinner and you get to experience local food which I thought awesome. All the excursions were very organized and done in a professional manner. Every crew members are very open to helping you throughout the trip. If I were to sail again, I would definitely go with Viking. Much thanks to Carl and Timhomir who helped us in every way on Viking Egil from Nov 18-25. The trip was flawless because of you. Thank you.
