We went on this cruise with some friends because we wanted to take a cruise in Asia and it had to be in a very limited 3 week time frame. Cruising out of Hong Kong to Japan was very easy because it required no special visas. First, the cruise itself was very enjoyable. We all enjoyed the ports of call and the cruise staff. However, the Voyager itself is in a sad state. I had seen the reviews beforehand lamenting the state of the ship, and I took them with a grain of salt. Once I got on the ship, I saw for myself that she is in a state of fairly bad disrepair, especially for a Royal Ship. I know that she is going into dry dock very soon to get 'amped' but that is no reason for the company to let the ship fall into this state. On first appearance, the ship has way more rust than any other Royal ship I have seen. When you are returning to the ship from port and look up, it is very evident and looks bad. I am not sure why they havent spent more time cleaning this up The elevators were a very bad problem. 2 of the 3 forward starboard elevators were broke all 9 days. As for the central elevator usually 1 of the 4 was out at all times on both sides. Sometimes 2 elevators would be down. Additionally, even when they were generally working, there were times that they couldnt stop at certain floors because they doors wouldnt open properly. There were also problems at many bars where equipment was malfunctioning or broken, such as with soda dispensing. They also had a lot of AV and IT issues when setting things up for events in the public rooms This was all very disappointing and I expect better from Royal. I am not sure if it is just this ship, or how things run in Asia in general. Overall, the staff was great. The Cruise Director staff was wonderful, Specialty restaurant staff was great, cabin staff was great This was also my first time on a cruise where the majority of passengers did not speak English. Most of the passengers here spoke Mandarin, so many of the events were held in Mandarin. One thing I like was they added a Hot Pot as a specialty restaurant in the Windjammer at night. It was a really good idea and we went twice Overall, I enjoyed being on the Voyager, I just hope that they can fix all her problems in dry dock and they dont let her fall into disrepair again when she is done Read Less

This cruise is aimed at the Chinese market. Facilities on offer including food menu reflects this fact. Very limited choices and the menu’s all have pictures much like MacDonald’s. Baseball caps, shorts and general weekend wear is accepted in the dining restaurants therefore no need to pack jacket, ties or evening gowns. Splash pools on deck are used by swimmers determined to do many lengths as possible leaving little room for those who wish to relax. Extremely difficult to find a seat in the windjammer as whole families occupy tables for hours on end, despite announcements by staff. The same applies to the casino. Disembarkation is restricted if you do not book one of the organise excursions. On the plus side the places, beaches & people in Vietnam are amazing. Unable to get into the Ice show having tried at every opportunity Overall very disappointed with this cruise. We are currently Emerald members. Read Less

We booked in March for this cruise. My father and mother-in-laws have poor walking abilities and they do not enjoy flying. But they do want to see Vietnam so we booked this cruise which visit two Vietnam ports. First of all, embarkation in Hong Kong is not great. Kai Tak Terminal is very busy because this ship and Dream Cruises are both embarking on the same day. The queues are very long. Fortunately because we have two elderly people among us we could join the special elderly queue for check-in. Then the worst thing was the zig-zag bridge that connect the terminal with the ship. I completely fail to understand why this winding zig-zag bridge is necessary when a direct birdge (airport jet bridge) can do the same job! The ship is in good condition. It does not immediately feel like it is in need of dry dock work. (But it is going to dry dock in September.) The staterooms were not yet ready and we were told we could take lunch in the Sapphire Dining Room, so we made our way there. Lunch was buffet style and it was fine. After lunch we went to our rooms. We had a promenade view room and it was rather roomy for a cruise ship with two sofas. Our stateroom attendant was Iwayan, he was very good and he opened the connecting door between our room and my in-laws room for us as soon as we requested. The dining on the ship is okay. It is nothing to write about. Some of the food in the dining room can be found again in the Windjammer at late night snack time. The ship is consisted of a majority Hong Kong and China people and some of them seemed determined to eat back their cruise fare. Well, given the food served I think they had a hard time achieving that goal. For the ports, Chan May is really far away from Da Nang. We hired a driver for a day trip to Hoi An but he could not come into the port because our tour company is not "sponsored" by RCCL. We had to pay another driver to drive us out of the port gates to meet him. But he was not a very good driver as he could not speak much English and he took us back from Hoi An 1.5 hours earlier than agreed. The worst thing was he would not enter the gates of the port as promised. So we did not tip him and made a complaint to his company. Many RCCL "sponsored" tours came back late from their tours and the ship did not sail until 17:40, as opposed to 17:00. We were still approaching Nha Trang when we took our breakfasts. As this is a tender port we had to wait for our tender time. RCCL "sponsored" tours and group tours all went ashore before us. We only got ashore at 11am. Our tour guide and bus took us to the sights and lunch. Then we requested to visit a supermarket for souvenirs like coffees and dried mango. We got back at about 4:15pm and were back on board quite quickly. After all both ports were not great. One night we had an American singer who performed as many Chinese songs as English songs. He was okay but I saw a Caucasian family of four looking rather bored as we boarded the lift outside the theater. The Ice Skating show Ice Odyssey was fantastic. We watched it and then strongly recommended my mother-in-law to go. She went and she was amazed as well. We had a plain sailing back to Hong Kong after Nha Trang. Nothing to report. We also got back before the Dream Cruises ship so we got away okay. Some of the things we really couldn't get our heads around were the lack of technology on the ship. I could not believe they had to write a number on our Sea Pass cards to indicate we had watched Ice Odyssey. Also in the dining room we had a waiter come to us to write down our room number every night. I mean, aren't we in the 21st century? Can you not just scan my Sea Pass card for that? Also, the in-room television had so little choice of channels. When I was on Quantum of the Seas it could receive a TVB J2 channel but here there is only one Chinese channel which recurred the same content all through the cruise. There are loads of Chinese satellite channels in the region and that's the best they can tune their tv sets to? Once again RCCL, we are in the 21st century! I wish I had downloaded a Samsung remote control app to my phone so I can plug in my mobile hard disk to the tv and watch the movies I have in it. The service provided by all the waiters, servers and room attendants were very good. They worked really hard to keep the ship clean and the service going. I applaud them because with 3,000+ guests (many are children and elderly people) on board it was no easy thing. Read Less

We have sailed on RCI many times, but this was our first time on a Voyager-class ship. We took this cruise with trepidation because of the numerous negative reviews here about the ship and its clientele, but it was the only extended SE Asia area cruise that we could take this year. Suffice it to say that the ship was in decent, although not perfect condition, we had no issues with anyone on board, and we had a great cruise. 1. Don't take this cruise without spending time in Singapore--it really is unique. 2. Embarkation, debarkation and port stops were all relatively quick and painless, except for the one tender port where there was a very long line in the hot sun to get back on the ship. 3. Lots of power strips and other contraband were confiscated from luggage upon embarkation and kept in the bottom deck Naughty Room during the cruise. 4. We had a full (Grand) suite for the first time on RCI. We liked the extra space, the big bathroom and balcony, and the associated perks (especially the line-skipping at various times, the great Concierges who were always helping us when needed, the reserved ice show and other entertainment seating and the bridge visit). 5. The vast majority onboard appeared to be Brits, Aussies, and US, with a smattering of Spanish and Portuguese speakers, and maybe 20% Chinese and other Asians. The MDR had its usual menus (but see below) and the entertainment was almost entirely presented in English (and was generally quite good). We were told that the immediately prior shorter cruise was totally different by some B2Bers--most of the pax were Asians, and the ship's food and entertainment had been shifted accordingly. 6. Michelle, the Cruise Director, was constantly seen everywhere on the ship and did a nice job along with Kitty, the Activities Manager. 7. We chose the new Unlimited Dining Plan, which we thought was a great deal. It will be very difficult to go back to eating in the main dining room (we saw the latter's menus because we were in a suite and could have ordered off its daily menu for room service, but we never did except once for breakfast). We never ate at the MDR and only once (upon embarkation) at the Windjammer buffet and didn't miss them. 8. The ship needs its upcoming extended drydock. The elevators were not always reliable and there were worn and rust spots on our balcony and around the ship, but everything seemed to be functioning. None of that wear and tear significantly affected our cruise. 9. Three of the four port stops required one to two and a half hour land trips to get to most places you'd want to see. If that's a problem for you, don't take this cruise. One stop that worked out very well for us was taking the Bangkok On Your Own RCI overnight bus trip from the Laem Chabang port to Bangkok. Booked this cruise , our first , because of the destinations. On boarding yes you can see it is an older ship and needs it’s upgrade due September/ October but in no way is it a rust bucket. Let’s be realistic the price paid reflects the condition. Pay top $ and you will get all the razzmatazz some people seem to expect. Our Junior suite reminded me of my parents caravan from the 70s , every door you opened provided space for storage. The suite 1634 was spacious and comfortable. We were looked after very well by Suma our cabin attendant. Windjammer - not for me but perfectly adequate. We had a stay onboard day at one port and as the ship was nearly empty we enjoyed a nice relaxed lunch. The coffee shop - if late for breakfast as we often woke late( the only time in years I have slept 8 hrs solid) we came here . It was good. As was lunch, snacks and coffees any time you wanted. Freshly prepared and tasty. Dining room where we sometimes had “posh breakfast” best omelet ever. Nice surroundings , always serviced with a smile and good grace. Diner , we chose my time dining but it works better if you book a time , for us 8.15pm , same table for two every night waited on by Michael who is excellent and always added that personal touch by remembering our names from day one onwards. Food was good, sometimes better than others but beautifully presented . Trips - because of the destinations sometimes the travel was quite long to get to the designated city/ excursion point. Don’t complain do your research first. You can’t stick a port in the middle of land. When there embrace the culture and sights. WiFi- iffy at times but there again be realistic , you can’t just magic up WiFi in remote areas. Vietnam being the worst but would that not be expected as at times more remote. Crew- fantastic. Always smiling , extremely curtious and good at their jobs. Entertainment - great shows. Ice skating was excellent. Hard enough to skate on a still rink never mind one that is rocking on sea. Mr and Mrs a total hoot. Well done to the 3 couples who took part , great entertainment. Fellow Travellers- we met up with the most lovely people. By the end of the nine days we had made good friendships. However not everyone is the same and the moaners of the world will always moan. Rude people who barge in and basically think they come first will always be rude. Look around at some of the conditions in the countries you have visited and appreciate what you have. 3500 passengers will provide all sorts. To sum up - we loved our cruise. Our first but not our last. Looked after and entertained by a great crew who all work very very hard. I hope this has given a more rounded review than some after all it is not RC fault if passengers are smelly etc as in other reviews. Cheaper cruise because older ship but it gave us 9 days of a smashing holiday. Read Less

Well all my worries were for nothing, this was a great cruise. We left from Singapore with stops in Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Nga Trang, Da Nang/Huey and ending in Hong Kong. Embarkation was smooth, everyone went straight to the buffet of course, and then our cabins were available from 1.30. My friend and I had each packed a couple of bottles of wine in our luggage. Her luggage arrived promptly, but mine never showed so I guessed it would be at the “naughty room”, which it was. They had a note on it saying 2 bottles (which you are allowed) and didn’t seem to want me to open the bottles to check it was wine so I’m not sure what the point was, or why my friend’s luggage got through. I just had an internal cabin with a “virtual balcony” so you could see what was happening outside. Nice in theory, it worked most of the time but maybe because of salt build up on the camera plus the Perspex covering the screen, it was a very hazy picture and you couldn’t tell if it was sunny or cloudy outside, it was like an old black & white TV. The cabin was small and the shower was tiny but I expected that as I had booked the cheapest and I spend very little time in the cabin so it was fine. The ship in general was showing its age and on occasion we would get a little drip of water from the ceiling in public areas, but as we know it goes into dry dock in September. It was amusing more than anything, and at least the water was coming from above, rather than a leak from below lol. The atrium area and Sapphire dining room are quite spectacular – really beautiful. One of my concerns was the reports of hordes of pushy, rude Asian customers. In fact the majority of passengers were from the US, also English, Spanish, Australians and a few of us New Zealanders. There were certainly a few Asian passengers but I never saw any rudeness or pushiness from them, they were just as polite as any other group. We were pleasantly surprised at the politeness of the photographers, usually they are very insistent on taking your photos which we hate, but these ones were respectful. Also instead of having to look through rows of photos of other people, the photos were able to be accessed from a computer using your room number. Dining – we mostly ate in the Sapphire dining room for the late seating. Our waiters were great and the food was very good. Just once my meal was a bit lukewarm but otherwise was always hot. The curries were great. I used the Windjammer buffet for breakfast because I have little patience in the morning and it is easier to serve myself when I want it. It was certainly busy but not too bad. We had one lunch in the buffet and it was fine but we much preferred the main dining room if it was open. There were two formal nights. Sadly the baked Alaska parade seems to have disappeared completely but the wait staff did line up on the staircases and sing to us. The midnight buffet with all the carved ice etc also seems to have disappeared (now I’m showing my age). Entertainment – The ice show was amazing, and we went to the other shows almost every night. All the shows were great, even the comedian which I didn’t think I would like. The male dancers in particular were fabulous. We didn’t go to the magician as none of us are keen on magicians. I’ve travelled on MSC, Holland America, Princess, Norwegian & P&O Australia and this cruise was as good as any I have been on, and better than some. Bangkok – this was a 2 hour bus trip from the port. Bear in mind we are two middle aged ladies so my review is from our perspective only. We took the Bangkok on your own excursion. Our guide was Aey and he was very witty and informative and we really enjoyed the bus trip because of him. As for Bangkok, sorry but we hated it. We got dropped at a shopping mall and ventured out once, but the heat and traffic drove us back inside and we spent much of the time (6 long hours) in a bar lol. Also note the bars are not allowed to serve alcohol between 2 and 5pm so it was a long, thirsty wait. This probably only applies to within the mall I am guessing. So it was our own fault that we didn’t give Bangkok more of a fair go, but it was just a bit overwhelming for us. We got back to the ship about 10pm so the buffet was closed but the Café Promenade is open 24 hours so we had lovely pizza there for tea. Saigon – Because we were so useless at seeing Bangkok we changed our excursion from Saigon on your own to the Laquerware factory and market tour. I am not a shopper but my friend had been told the Ben Tahn Market is amazing with cheap (fake) handbags. Again our guide was great and we saw a couple of sights. The lacquerware factory was ok but as I say I’m not a shopper…. At last we get to the market and my friend had encouraged the guide to give us 2 whole hours there. We knew that was a mistake within 10 minutes! I have never been so hassled by vendors in my life (and I have been to Egypt). The place was in a huge warehouse with no air conditioning so it was incredibly hot, the food court area stunk of something dead, and the vendors would physically grab you and try to stop you leaving. It was about the worst place I have been in my life. In the end I had to stand by the door for an hour waiting for the bus so I could breathe. My friend hated it too, but had in her mind that she had to get a handbag. She did buy one but discovered when she got back that the one given to her (pre wrapped) was faulty and was not the one she had examined on display. Otherwise, we thought Saigon was much nicer than Bangkok, it just had more character (and a big problem with litter). Nga Trang – At last a lovely beach! We got a taxi for $US10 from the port to the beach/town area as again the heat was incredible. Unfortunately although this is a tourist area, they did not speak much English at all, so the driver seemed determined he was going to take us to the “centre” even though we kept telling him we were happy to stop here! The “centre” turned out to be a shopping mall. Anyway we were still by the beach and enjoyed a paddle. Then we found a bar on the beach with a nice breeze blowing through. It should have been perfect and we ordered drinks and lunch. Well it was a bit like an episode of Fawlty Towers, I won’t go on but the service was the worst ever and nobody seemed to speak any English at all despite it being a tourist town. There was a very long queue in the heat to get back on the tenders but the staff brought us iced water which was nice. Danang/Huey – Here we took the Hoi An on your own excursion. This was the highlight of the trip. It is an ancient town which has been kept as it was and is a UNESCO sight. The bus had to park a long distance away as they are not allowed close between 11 and 1pm. So the guide informed us we had to walk 1km to the town (again the heat and humidity was incredible). Despite the heat I found the walk interesting as we walked down a lane with houses on either side and you could see how the local people really live, rice paddies in their back yard etc. The town was beautiful, there is a river through the middle and there were ancient houses you can visit. Quite fascinating. I could have spent a lot longer there if it weren’t for the heat. It did stink of septic tanks, I guess the ancient sewer system struggles with all the tourists. Anyway Hoi An is a must do I think. Hong Kong – We disembarked in Hong Kong and took our own bags off the ship as we were flying out at 12.30 so needed to get to the airport quickly. The queue for taxis was nearly 1 hour with the sweat dripping off us. We also had the issue of no HK dollars and hoped to find a taxi that would take credit cards. Long story short, no it seems hardly any taxis take cards but fortunately we had a lovely taxi driver who agreed to take US dollars and we gave him a little extra for his trouble. To sum up, the cruise itself was great, no complaints there except at times the music in public areas was too loud. The staff were, without exception, great. The locals in each port were very kind and polite (except those ghastly women at the market and the hopeless staff at the bar in Nga Trang). The heat was oppressive and made everything more difficult. I would happily cruise on this ship again but have decided Asia is not somewhere I would go again (except Singapore which I like), I know many people love it so don’t let that put you off going. First let's talk about the ship: It's old and tired and doing a make over in September of 2019. Boy did RCCL wait longer than it should!. It's not only dated (a peachy pink in many areas. Why RCCL uses trendy colors instead of neutrals that will not get so tired so fast is beyond me), but certain areas (like the ladies bathroom by Giovanni's) are falling apart. The layout of the ship is done well and the activities are plentiful. Note: US residents do not need to arrange their own Visas. The ship does the Vietnam one for $6 each and the Thailand one is also arranged and provided (not really a Visa, but some kind of travel card). I believe it is the same for the UK, but do check. We stayed in a suite and bought the unlimited dining package, so we never ate at the regular restaurant (except day 1 at the windjammer, which was just OK). Frankly, on other RCCL ships we have been disappointed with the regular restaurants so we avoided that and just did the specialty restaurants instead. For breakfast, Giovanni's is where suite guests eat and for days at sea lunches, specialty restaurants are included in the dining package. My biggest complaint is that the menu stays stagnant in the specialty restaurants. It would be great, especially on cruises over 7 days, if they would have an A and B menu (switching 1/2 way through). I think they would have more action in them that way too. Giovanni's: Great service and good food, family style. The bad: They had no fresh (or even seemingly dry) basil, as it "turned black" days before the sailing ended. As an Italian, I can say this is really bad. They should have at least had dried basil. The tomato sauce would have been far better with traditional basil added and how the chef allowed the sailing without it is beyond me. I had the cannoli once and it was so bad, I did not try again, as the shell was soggy. The lasagna was loaded with a heap of ground beef, so much it overpowered the dish. The caprese salad was bland (lack of basil and low quality tomatoes were to blame). The good: The lamb chops, ceasar and chicken were favorites. Chops: Great service and good food. The Bad: The filet has a weird flavor. I suspected Mexican beef (slightly gamely), but they said no. Giovanni's Filet has the same flavor. The Rib Eye was amazing. Chicken also excellent. Izumi: Great service and good food. The hot stone filet was amazing.The mochi was fantastic, but they ran out of 1/2 of the flavors by the time the cruise was 1/2 over. Poor planing on the chef's part. Johnny Rockets: Great burgers, fries and shakes; however, I wish they had asked how I want it prepared, as it was a bit overcooked for my liking. The service was terribly slow. Room service: Did a good job except for one day, where they screwed up almost everything, but they made it right and sent us chocolate covered strawberries as an I'm sorry that evening. Spa: Good, typical sales game. We had one therapist for a deep tissue that could not go deep at all, even with a lot of direction. Makes me think they do not have top trailed therapists, which is unexcusable based on what they charge. They gave a discount and switched therapists for our other services. We use the spa a lot on cruises, so we get to know them pretty well. I give this one a B. Shows: We saw a few of the shows. They were all pretty good. Ports: On board in Singapore: Truly a highlight. We went in 2 days early and regretted we did not have more time. Having 3-5 days would be perfect. The Malay, Little India, China town, the Civic district (go at both night and day, light show each night) and Gardens by the Bay (also night light show that is free) were all highlights. We hired a private guide (tours by locals) for a 1/2 day tour and that was perfect. We added a drive/air conditioned van, which allowed us to see everything in the 1/2 day and not be as hot. Unbelievable restaurants. Bangkok, Thailand (overnight): Spectacular! This is 2-3 hours from port, so we got a hotel room (Asanti Riverside, which was amazing). Arrival time was 11 am (but you will not get off of the ship until between 11:30-noon, as it was very slow getting cleared and always is), this was a real bummer and I have no idea why RCCL is so short sighted on this. It should also be on a Saturday and at 6am (or Friday if you have 2 days like we did) so you can see the best floating market (the one available during the week is either in Pattaya (not real, more of a tourist trap) or way out of the way and 3 star at best). We hired a guide who provided a driver (tours by locals) for both days and it was worth every penny. So much to see and it is very hot so an air conditioned van really helped. We also saw way more than we could otherwise with a local. We saw the Grand Palace, Golden Buddah, Emerald Buddah, Reclining Buddah, Canal Ride and some other temples/shrines. Ho Chi Min City (Saigon): Amazing day! 1.5 hours from port: We hired Saigon Adventures and did a food tour with city highlights. They picked us up in a van and scooters met us in Saigon. A local driver was assigned each in our group and off we went. It was our best day and a blast. The food was amazing. The sites were good, the main tour guide was wonderful and our drivers made it stress free and fun (I would not want to drive one of those myself in the city, as it is really crazy). They dealt with all of our food issues and we genuinely enjoyed every food stop (Soup, coffee, baguette sandwiches, and BBQ pork). Nha Trang: beach city port, quick to get to. The town itself is touristy and there is a decent beach so you could stay local and just use a taxi to get where you want to go. We hired Nhatrangadventures for a jeep countryside with city highlights tour (5-6 hours). They picked us up outside of the port (a quick 5 minute walk). We got to see the countryside and how they really lived, making rice patties and traditional hats and also saw the city highlights. It was a great time and unique view of the Vietnamese and the lunch provide was amazing.. Hue: a bit more than an hour outside of the port AND you have to take a tender, so allow for an hour to get off of the ship (30 minutes if you are one of the first and all goes perfectly). We hired stopandgocafetours for a tour of the old city and highlights with a private van. My only complaint is that the owner emailed me the day prior to confirm. I had fully paid for the tour and it was a day at sea so we had no service and got a later start since he didn't hear from me until we were at port. The guide did a wonderful job. It was a sweltering hot day, so the van was a godsend between sites. We saw the lost city of Hue. Hue itself was the most pretty of the Vietnamese cites we saw and is a not to miss place. They also took us to a very nice lunch and the food was wonderful. We enjoyed the day less only because of the heat, as that was a real challenge for all of us. Hong Kong: Close to port. We hired a private guide for a 1/2 day tour (toursbylocals). We saw Victoria's Peak, the markets and different areas of Hong Kong. It's a big city and was nice, but not anything amazing. We stayed one night at the Marriott by the airport, which is a wonderful property. They have an 10 minute shuttle to the small city nearby (and and 8 minute shuttle every 30 minutes to the airport). We took it to the cable car and went to the giant buddah. This was a real highlight for us. The cable car ride provided amazing views,the giant buddah was beautiful and there is the very unique city that was part of it with amazing shopping and things to do. Very much recommend!!! Embarkation: not so good. They kept my passport cover and I had to run back to get it and the initial keys did not work and were not the gold suite keys, which you need to use the suite services. The second copy worked, but were also not golden. 3rd time was a charm. Concierge fixed it all for us and arranged dining times and helped with what we needed. Debarkation: smooth and easy. We left at 8:30 so the crowds were gone. Big Tip: Arrange a driver ahead of time or a private tour guide. The taxi line took 2 hours and was insane. There are no signs to let you know you do not have to stand in the line unless you need a taxi, so make a note. Customs was a breeze and done by the ship ahead of time. Don't believe the bad reviews. U read them and was very concerned. However, we were very pleasantly surprised. Boat was lovely - yes a little old but very clean and we'll maintained. Lifeguards on all pools. Food was great in the main dining room and in the Windjammer buffet restaurant. Staff were great - our room attendant was fantastic and they are a great source of info for first time cruisers. Things that weren't as great - communication for boarding and final checking off the boat. We were a little confused. On boarding go to the Windjammer, get yourself lunch room check in is 1.30ish. Seating is hard to get at the Windjammer but queues weren't as bad as I had read. Don't take power boards - they hold your suitcase and it adds extra drama. Lifts waiting time is massive so if you don't have a disability take the stairs or you'll waste lots of time. The drinks package thing was interesting. We took the Sosa package which did work out cost effective cause we got great coffees at the promenade cafe and lots of soft drinks by the pool. It also meant a very small bill at the end. I and my family were on a vacation to Penang and Phuket. It was afternoon when we embarked. The exterior of the ship was patchy, rusty and old. Barnacles lined the bottom. When we entered the ship, we were immediately directed to WINDJAMMER after checking in. As we had priority boarding, it was very empty then so we got our food and table within 10 minutes. The carpeted floor was littered with dirt and scraps of food from the previous voyage. The food was horrible and the Char Siew(Cantonese toasted meat) was unprofessionally bathed in ketchup, contrary to the food award certificates that were proudly hung in dusty photo frames outside the buffet style restaurant. When we finished our food, windjammer was already full to the brim and there were people pushing and shoving. People were reserving tables with tissue paper packets and loud and disgusting music was being blasted through the PA system. Meanwhile, my father was having a splitting headache and my mother was complaining. We quickly exited Windjammer to go to our staterooms. However, our rooms were not ready till 1.30 p.m. so we had to wait 45 minutes. We then decided to walk around the ship. The pool was small like the regular ones you have in a backyard and full of people and the place was rusty and old, especially signboards. The elevators smelt like rotten eggs and the buttons were worn and polished by years of use. The library was appalling. There were little books, and the remaining books were arranged in a disorderly manner. The computers had unauthentic copies of Windows on them and had no ethernet or wireless connection, hence rendering them unusable. Games were all in a mess and had lost parts. Our rooms were soon ready. Doors to the corridors were opened. We went to our rooms, the junior suites which were very far. Entering it with our Sea pass, the rustic cabin of 1998 greeted me. The ceiling panels were falling out and dents were covered with stickers. Carpet was dirty as well. The toilet had a cheap and lousy shower head. The soap they provided was watery and did little to cleanse my body. There was no toothbrush provided and drainage pipes for the sink were corroded, exposed and leaks patched with rubber seals. The hair dryer was very unsafe as it spewed out the smell of burnt plastic every time I turned it on. The balcony had rust on the ceiling due to leaks. Lack of Universal Serial Bus ports for charging electronic devices and instead we were give two American ports. We did not bring travel adapters and since our charging adapters were UK ones, we were forced to buy overpriced travel adapters found in the store in deck 5. Speaking of the promenade deck, the indoor cabins without sea view had windows along there. The loud and annoying singing and dancing at night would disturb the residents from sleeping, hence the lights to their rooms on and their bloodshot eyes staring out from the glass windows. Crowds of people were dancing to the beat of the music and the promenade cafe full to the brim. The bar and lounge were empty as people who could not stand the music(like my parents) were repelled from the promenade. The lobbies of 8 lifts on each side of the promenade are full 24/7 either because people are going back to the rooms as they cannot find a table to dine or because they are escaping from the horrible 80s music blasted in the promenade. As we squeezed into the lift, a baby started crying and a boy watched cartoons on his phone. The smell of cheap perfume and perspiration fills the air as I struggle to breathe. The lift stops at almost every floor, once in a while someone stepping on my foot or someone wanting to get in but unable to. After an eternity the lift reaches the deck our staterooms are on. That is all I have to complain about. Now, about the pros. Despite the poor leadership in the team, on the bright side, the captain knows how to pilot the cruise properly, which is something we must be thankful for. The staff, especially the room keepers are polite, greeting us every time we see each other. Although we didn’t get to swim, the Phuket shore excursion and ice odyssey skating show were indeed entertaining. Despite internet connection speeds being slow, there was still internet. The beds were comfy and I did not suffer from sleepless nights. The rustic ship, despite its worn and torn look, is nostalgic and definitely brings back memories from the 90’s. Would like to feedback a very bad behavior from the Flow Rider staff. Risk of causing accident by intentionally spraying water into my face to get me out of the pool due to miscommunication & a safety risk for me. He is a Caucasian staff. Date/Time of event is 19May, about 5pm. Pls check security camera. Pls reprimand him for potentially risking an accident. 3. Would like to comment of inconsistencies for the Flow Rider. The staff from Philippines is the best, ensuring whenever possible, to have customer knelt on the board for a memorable photo shoot & the PRC staff is encouraging. Others could not care less. 4. Poor organizational skills, in particularly the ice skating. Long snaking queues without any knowledge that all the slots have been taken. 5. Nightly performance was a drag! Only a single performer per night. A violinist for 1 night and an acrobat couple the final night. No variety. 6. Finale Night was a total let down. Small crowd, very poor attendance by the crew and staff themselves. Did not recall seeing the Cruise Entertainment Director. And only 1 performer! 7. Dining staff are extremely short handed. Tables not cleared on time. Food all over the floor. Staff expressionless face tells many stories. 8. It seems like an old ship sent to asia for retirement. Worn and rusty. Read Less

I have sailed forty-nine nights now on Royal Caribbean ships over the past 7 years. I guess you could say we are ‘experienced cruisers’. This past cruise was our first trip to Asia- sailing from Hong Kong to Singapore. We sailed aboard the Voyager of the Seas. Normally we have thought Royal Caribbean lines to be a slightly better cruise line than Princess and certainly heads above Norwegian Cruise Lines. After this cruise I believe Royal Caribbean may be showing signs of a major decline. Possibly this is just a worn-out ship with poor leadership. Specifically on the Voyager this cruise, I would say there is not one specific thing, but death by 100 paper cuts. ⁃ Ship is dirty. Look at the ledges or the the hanging decorations in the main centrum. They are beyond dusty. Room service was pretty good. It is specifically the public areas that are filthy. ⁃ Ship is old and desperately needs an update; many broken items. Fridge in our room did not work. We asked them to fix but they could not. Lights out on art in stairways. Ice cream refrigerator quit working at Ben and Jerry’s resulting in soupy ice cream. Ceiling canvas in pool areas rotting. Rust on balcony of our room. On and on…. ⁃ Dining staff is way over-tasked. We waited an hour+ each night between appetizer and main course. Food is fine but not as good as other ships. What is with not passing out bread anymore or taking order of desert with the main meal and the cheesy one page menu? Or what about the sales pitch on the bottom of this cheesy menu for a steak from Chops? Seems like Corporate is looking to squeeze every bit of revenue out of everything they can. ⁃ Captain is a slug. We went to the Captain’s appreciation event. The Captain spoke and recognized the crew. One crew member in specific had five years dedicated service. The Captain attempted to pronounce her name and when he could not pronounce the name, he said, “Whatever. It does not matter” and she came to the front to have her picture taken and looked very humiliated. What kind of leader does this in front of 150 people? Why not practice the name beforehand? How would he like this public humiliation for his years of service? ⁃ Shore tender was the biggest joke I have ever seen. They promised the first tender at 9:30 AM; it did not leave until 11:00 - no announcement- just make people stand in line for 2 hours in a hot-as-hell hallway. ⁃ Windjammer sucks on this ship. NEVER were there enough seats! Not on the first day, nor subsequent cruise days. WHY? Do you want to know why??? Because the hacks at Corporate decided that since this old hulk-of-a-ship made in the 1990s did not have a “Chops” restaurant, they would take 25% of the Windjammer space and put a Chops there in it’s place. More revenue, after all. So it sits empty while we stand with a plate of food. ⁃ The staff seemed unhappy, distant (in attitude) and some I got the feeling were resentful. One man I observed appeared as if he could ‘snap’ any moment. We had a good time in Asia despite these hurdles and really, anyone who can even go on a cruise ship is a lucky dog in this world. However, at the same time, Royal Caribbean (on this trip) did not meet a high standard at all. I would give this ship at the most 2 out of 5 stars. Maybe one star. I would not book a cruise on this ship. I wonder if my days of sailing with Royal Caribbean is coming to an end. Read Less

Hello, I am in a position to be reviewed online to form service so I always ask, should I do this? And you know what, I should because telling the truth makes the world a better place. And RC needs to know and read a common experience so they can there support and advertising. First the ship is amazing, food tasty, and mostly ALL good, like five stars good. I cruise a lot and will stay on RC as I know hem. But when one two or three things go wrong, it starts to leave a bad taste. My biggest gripe is: THE FALSE ADVERTISING FOR STREAM INTERNET SERVICE. Internet is horrible and we pay tooth and nail to get a weak signal. RC will eventually Get a Class Action and get sued for false advertising. Why say you can provide a service when you cannot? Be real. Say, we will charge you half as we can only get you weak signal. Instead they lure you to pay upwards of $80 a day (four devices for nothing) I know I talked to management an got the real satellite skinny on how internet works. It does not work reliable but you'll pay anyway. RC- DO NOT FALSELY ADVERTISE-IT'S WRONG. Maybe this only happens on international waters, but cruisers beware and research before you buy. RC tell the truth. Secondly, what's with standing in lines at excursions when YOU are giving the ship money. Lots of profit in these marked up excursions. I know just look at Expedia activities and you will see the mark up. If you take our money, give staff of four so there is non line. You hate our vacation that we paid for. Lastly in room service Its a ice bonus. But two of three order so far are wrong. Of you can say, well they are busy, but again this is a staff issue or a QM oversight issue. Why should we duffer and thin k we need ot our our needs last? Do you get wrong service in Las Vegas room service, usually no... then add a manager to review plates before they go out. Worse yet, they call you three time to tell you they are out of something or you have the wrong menu. Ok this might sound petty and. maybe it is. But tow for three. Oh yeah I have not send my third order. Its sitting there as breakfast to be eaten, so we will see. I get cruises are are like "zoos with lots of people,' not all of them are nice BTW. But RC beef up the service, tell the truth. Other than than that, Most RC offerings are amazing, boat is spotless, and most staff greet with smile. The other cruiser's on the other hand, I have never seen so many push there way to first in line. It's like the "girl is invisible." So now I start to push forward like them, and my kids say I am rude. I say: "do as the Romans did and claim your space." Sorry of grammar errors. I'm on my way to excursion. This was my 7th cruise with RC and up to this point I was very loyal to them and had always enjoyed my cruises. I was traveling with my parents and wife on this cruise and they are all very experienced cruisers too. All of us couldn't believe how bad this ship, staff and ports were and the amazing corners that RC is cutting to save costs. First, the service was awful. It seems that staff has been cut by 40% versus other cruises. Bars are packed, the windjammer is always packed and crew members just seemed overall annoyed with passengers. One of the funniest (in an awful way) anecdotes to capture how bad it is was that they don't allow you to pour your own water or coffee at the Windjammer. The problem is, half the coffee machines and ice machines are broken, so there are only ever 2 stations that are fully functioning. So this creates long lines at every station, just to get a cup of water. At times 15 people would be queued up, snaking between tables waiting for water. The staff had no urgency or worries about this. At one point I was standing there for 3-5 minutes while a crew member was watching individual cubes of ice fall into a bucket from a dis-functioning machine. So finally I went behind the station to pour my own coffee. Comically bad. The ship itself is tired and worn out. Rust everywhere, stains on the carpets and a general musty smell. Our hallway on floor 7 had a roof leak so there were buckets of water dotting the halls catching drips and huge fans running all day to try and remove the growing mold. The internet almost never worked even though we paid for the "streaming" package. One day it was down the entire day and didn't work at all. The pool chairs are nasty and outside decks have dirt and stains all over them. It just looked tired and worn out everywhere. The Vietnam ports of call were nightmares. Large container ports and if you didn't make your own plans you would be completely out of luck. The tender process was comically mismanaged. It was supposed to begin at 9am and didn't start till 11am. So there were scores of people lined up on the stairs, angry and hot. Finally they just started loading people onto the lifeboats regardless of their ticket number so people who had been waiting for 2.5 hours were passed by people who showed up 15 minutes earlier. Tempers were beyond hot. Overall, this cruise ruined RC for me. I brought a list of concerns to the Guest Service deck and the exact response was: "thank you for your concerns. Unfortunately we've heard these things from hundreds of others and there isn't anything we can do. Thank you though for not shouting at me like most other people have been. Hopefully this ship is dry docked soon because there is nothing we can do." My last comment is about the leadership. I think there is a serious concern with the Captain of this ship. It doesn't get this bad without poor leadership at the top. I was actually sad when I attended the exclusive crown and anchor night and he was giving out years of service recognition. An employee was getting their 5 year award and he butchered the pronunciation of their name. He just laughed and said "oh well, it doesn't really matter anyway." How awful....inhuman and embarrassing. I felt so sad for this crew member who had given 5 years of their life to RC and was then laughed at in front of the entire room because the Captain not only didn't know their name, but didn't even care what it was. Cruise Itinerary Just prior to the cruise we were advised the our overnight in Hong Kong had been removed and we would now arrive on disembarkation day. Booking cancellation was not allowed unless the cruise was paid in full without refund. 2. Check-in All embarking passengers were checked in at the same time but cabins were not available until 13:30 so hoards of passengers were milling about with their hand luggage, people were jostling for seats in the buffet and temper were getting frayed almost to the point of fighting. 3. Safety Drill Was carried out on the open deck (Promenade deck) people were squashed together in the hot sun for over half an hour with no directions from the inexperienced crew other than to line up in rows of four. No consideration was given to elderly, disabled or infirm passengers. Instructions during the drill given by staff were not audible or demonstrations visible. 4. Main Luggage Delivery Luggage arrived at the cabin very late (long after the ship sailed) 5. Dining Room Reservation Our booking reservation for dining was completely ingnored, we eventually was offered an alternative table tucked away in a corner under the main staircase. 6. Shore Excursions Shore excursions were very badly managed, passengers for all tours were mixed up together and held in the very overcrowded theatre for over and hour past the assembly time with no idea what was happening. The staff member in charge could not express herself or tell us what was happening in English (or any other language). No announcement were made about where the gangways were located. We were walked down three decks via the stairs and moved from the forward part of the ship to the aft gangway to disembark for the tours. No consideration was given to elderly, disabled or infirm passengers. 7. Library The ships library was a total waste of space with very few books and most of which were in foreign languages 8. In Cabin Movies In cabin movies on the cabin tv were chargeable at between $10 - $15 US dollars per movie 9. WiFi On board WiFi was prohibitively expensive starting at around $15.99 per day for the basic package. 10. The majority of the Cruise Directors staff could not speak English very well which made quizes and trivia games very difficult and hard to understand. No PowerPoint or visual aids were available. The Cruise Director himself was not approachable and did not interact with the passengers. Our whole experience with Royal Caribbean was horrendous. Read Less

The itinerary: Singapore, 4 Vietnam ports and Hong Kong was great. Just enough days at sea to relax as well. Boat itself: I find all these boats tacky so I won’t comment on the looks. Now the rooms were fine, pool, exercise facilities and restaurant were just fine. Linens could be replaced and frankly did not particularly like the stains on the tablecloths. Service: again all ok. Not specially impressed. Some of the rudeness we felt we experienced was more cultural and lack of language skills. The excursion staff definitely needs improvement and I would skip altogether next time. Their overview of the ports of call and excursion was particularly appalling. Young rude personnel. Activities: they tried hard. We enjoyed the fitness center, sauna, steam room, rock climbing, skating and a couple of shows. We were never bored. Pool side activities were fun. Food: ok bit main dining not at par with other cruises. Windjammer cafe had better food. We had some bad dinners so we switched mid cruise and the windjammer was just fine. Read Less

Activities - found details on the Cruise Compass and checked off what we wanted to do. All good from fitness at sidoku, to entertainment and scrap booking. Loved tge kronos band. Food- had 2 nights of dining at tge Chops Grille and Giovanni. Both excellent value undet tge BOGO package. Main dining room the next day was quite the opposite. Gave feedback and food improved after that. The dishes were ovet salty or sweet. Windjammer food was convenient and tasty. Meats there were mostly overdone. Enjoyed the white porridge white bait fish. Eggs, bacon, sausage. Fruits and drinks. We always say at the back to enjoy watching the propeller wake. Café rpmenade was the meeting place for late breakfast and afternoon tea for many. Good bran raisin muffobs, muffin surg egg n ham, beef on rye. Service - good but mixed crew had problems covering each other.. Swimming pool was small. Read Less

Voyager of the Seas In 1999, when Royal Caribbean's 3,114-passenger Voyager of the Seas entered service as the largest cruise ship in the world, it was heralded as the most revolutionary vessel ever built, forever changing the world of cruising with such never-before-seen features as an ice skating rink/TV studio/concert arena, rock-climbing wall, in-line skating track, horizontal atrium (now known as the Royal Promenade), and inside cabins with a view. Having been on the ship that year, yes it was beautiful vessel Service, entertainment, staterooms, all what one would expect in a 5 Star Hotel. Having been on the ship that year, yes that was then. How things have CHANGED!!! Cruised RC many times before, including the Voyager of the Seas and loved every minute of it...NOT so this time!!! A first impression of the Ship was quite positive from dockside. Embarkation was ok and we were on board pretty quick. But once on board we were given no information about where we could go and when we could get our cabin, after an hour or so we were advised via PA, that our cabin was ready. The cabin itself at the front end of the ship, interior promenade cabin was nice and very clean, however the décor is very dated tired and in need of refurbishment. The Good Points: Cabin steward was very good as was cabin upkeep during the whole trip. Dining in the main dining room was very nice. We had booked for any time dining and had no problem arranging a table each night. The evening menu had a good selection and the food was well presented and very nice. We were fortunate to been allocated the same table each night and were very happy with our two lady waiters. Main dining room breakfast was OK, however the service was sometimes very slow as was the selection at the buffet. Promenade café, the food here albeit only snacks (Pizzas, sandwiches and cookies were very good The ice show. Stunning, absolutely fabulous and should not be missed. Bad Points: The cruise had the feel of being in an average all-inclusive hotel in Benidorm and was a real disappointment. The fact that RC push the sale of their all inclusive drink package, it was hard to find a waiter to take an order and if you wanted a drink of any kind one needed to go to the bar to get one but was still charged 18% service charge. The bands around the ship were good, but always seem to play in the wrong location, the star lounge on the top deck, which happen to be a very nice lounge always had either a DJ or recorded music never a live band. The promenade is popular place and a great idea but all of the entertainment was on the main street (in a busking style), which made it difficult to enjoy. Particularly when you have someone else playing in the pub and competing with the music on the promenade. Safety Drill (although a totally essential part of any cruise) was carried out on the open deck (Promenade deck) people were squashed together in the hot sun for over half an hour with no directions from the inexperienced crew other than to line up in rows of four. Even on the dock site the smallest shop or café over free Wi-Fi. It’s a Rip-Off. The theatre entertainment was generally Ok and the ship Orchestra was excellent. However one of the Star special guest lady singer ( Tamara ) was pretty poor. The Cruise Director (Ken Jones) himself was not approachable and did not interact with the passengers. He was hardly ever seen on the ship, he had little if no charisma as did the rest of his team. Cruise Itinerary Only during the safety drill did we find out though a fellow passenger that the overnight in Hong Kong had been removed and we would now arrive on disembarkation day. We have had 3 sea days in total due the change of the overnight stay in Hong Kong. To find a sun lounger on any deck was impossible with passenger having to lay tower on the floor to sit or lay on. According to the guest relation there where only 750 sun lounger on board for approximately 3100 passengers. Read Less

We've done a fair amount of cruising, all on Holland America. We were intrigued by the idea of our first visit to Vietnam being aboard this Royal Caribbean "Voyager of the Seas". I guess we've been spoiled by HAL. RCL falls short in so many ways. Boarding at Singapore was well-organized and moved along well. One of the first indications about our RCL experience - we were asked (no, hassled) about purchasing the "drinks package" no less than eight times while going through the boarding process! We don't understand why anyone would purchase this overpriced addition - we noted that the only ones we found that had purchased it were British passengers. Upon setting food onboard we were greeted not with a hearty "welcome aboard" but ANOTHER pitch to buy the drinks package! Enough already! Cabin areas were blocked off with signs saying they would not be available until 2pm. Firstly, our cabin. We had a balcony cabin on deck 8, forward. RCL was advised weeks ago that we would need to have electric at the bedside for a medical device (CPAP). This information never was passed on to the ship. And not only that, but a small powerstrip that is carried for this device was seized during check-in. We all know how busy the crew is on embarkation day, and since this 21-year-old ship has only one electrical connection in the room, it required an extension cable. RCL didn't provide it until after dinner - along with our luggage, which we didn't get until after our 5:30pm dinner time. The cable proved to be a continual annoyance since the ship had no gaffer's tape and refused to do anything to make the situation safe. When we DID get our luggage, we had to chuck it on the bed - which didn't have the usual leather bedlinen protection we've always had on HAL. Furniture and fittings in the room were old and tired, as were the bed linens and towels. One of the deck chairs was broken, and huge areas of rust could be seen on our balcony and the balcony of other cabins we visited. • Our refrigerator never worked properly. • The sink drain was broken when we embarked, and we asked for it to be fixed. A repairman did visit but didn't have a correct part to make it fully functional again. • The announcement speaker in the cabins is a nice touch, but ours never worked. When there was an important announcement we had to prop open our door to hear it. • The room was never OUR temperature; I don't think the thermostat did anything. With a cruise in mostly 90degree tropical temperatures, we never felt the room was cool enough. • Three days in, we had to make a special request to have our linens changed on the bed. If you don't ask, they won't do it. • No ice service from the room attendants! Really! Couldn't believe this is the case on RCL. The lifeboat drill was a joke. This was the first of many problems that RCL has created by having large numbers of passengers from Mainland China with only Mandarin language skills and NO staff or announcements in this language. There WERE announcements in German. Unlike other ships, the attendance at the lifeboat drill was recorded by hand on clipboards instead of by scanning room cards. It was clear that many passengers did NOT attend this drill. Maybe there are not the same legal requirements for this drill as there would be on cruises leaving a US port. I was disappointed with the cavalier attitude by RCL staff during this important exercise. Many (most?) from Mainland China are very inexperienced travelers and they could have benefitted from some outreach by RCL to them. Instead we had eight days of problems with what looked to be 25-30% of the passengers. DINING Windjammer Cafe (Buffet)? Had to go there while waiting around for our cabins, which were not available until 2pm. It was packed to overflowing. It was the only time we ate there - shipboard buffets are IMHO hideous. We went up to look a couple times and the food looked mostly unappetizing and uninteresting. The dining room, three floors tall, was nicely decorated and not noisy. We enjoyed all our meals in the dining room; breakfast, lunch, and dinners (early seating). The breakfast menu got boring quickly and the cheap ingredients were the same as in the buffet. We really dislike the cheap bacon and sausage used in the dining room, and the frozen hash brown potatoes were hideous. Both breakfast and lunch had a large number of items that had to be personally retrieved from a buffet set up in the middle of the room. We thought this lazy by RCL. If we wanted a buffet we would go to the Windjammer. At dinner the first night I attempted to order a bottle of wine. Should be easy, right? Nope. RCL has NO wine stewards, and the waiter at our table (who barely spoke any English) was no help. I asked if there was a wine steward in the dining room, but apparently not. I ordered a bottle of a California Cabernet Sauvignon. Sorry, don't have. They didn't have my second or third selection, either. At this point I gave up. Really glad I hadn't purchased the drinks package. LOL The first morning I ordered a Bloody Mary. NO CELERY? This was just one of many, many cheap cost-cutting decisions that we've not seen elsewhere on a cruise. Dinners had a wide variety of items, but we found that many were made with cheap ingredients - tough beef, chewy pork, and mostly an indelible duck (that found its way into a duck salad the next night). Even the ice cream was poor quality - but I guess they didn't want to compete with the Ben & Jerry's onboard. Finally, we were absolutely shocked that Royal Caribbean would charge US$10 for ROOM SERVICE. I asked our room attendant about it and he said "almost no one orders room service, the goal". ONBOARD Like the rooms, many areas of the ship looked tired and worn-out. The pools were a case in point. However the big atrium area was striking and always busy - as a respite from the small cabins, especially on the three sea days. We don't understand why anyone would buy anything but essentials at the onboard shops, nor do we understand the so-called "art auctions". ENTERTAINMENT We're not much for onboard entertainment, but we did attend a couple shows at least for a while. A female Mongolian singer was hideous - she couldn't even sing in pitch. The juggler and magician were entertaining. But the idea that "world class" entertainment is on a cruise ship is ludicrous. There was little else to do, especially on the sea days. No cooking classes, no organized exercise or yoga classes. Yes, they have wall climbing and the wave rider. Not interested. PORT CALLS We had two RCL excursions, and two excursions organized via Cruise Critic and other passengers. Vietnam has seen an explosion of tourism the last few years, and this has left their tour industry hustling to catch up. We found all of the tour guides difficult to understand and travelers shouldn't expect the same range of expertise that one would find on other cruises. We knew that going in. HO CHI MINH (SAIGON) This RCL tour was replete with problems, mainly of the guide who told stories that were blatant propaganda and largely anti-American. The war ended in 1975 and the guide wasn't old enough to have experienced it first-hand. And towards the end of the day he kept passengers onboard while he attempted to sell a book that were clearly bootleg copies. We reported all the antics to RCL the next day. NHA TRANG Nha Trang is a tender port, and RCL struggled to move passengers ashore for unknown reasons. Our tour, with a company called Shore Excursions, was well-done and interesting. Nha Trang was the most advanced tourism destination of all our port calls and the town was well equipped to handle the influx. The temple visit was interesting, and a half-day boat ride ended at a riverside restaurant. The food was pedestrian and dumbed-down for the tourists, never a good sign. The tour ended at a traditional weaving shop. Nha Trang would be great for a repeat visit. HUE, HOI AN, & DA NANG This was also an RCL tour day. The problem at this destination is that the port isn't close to anything. We planned to take the tour to the ancient city of Hoi An. This was a two hour bus ride from the port, and then two hours back. Others who visited Hue, or Da Nang, had similar harrowing stories about the long travel times. And quite often many passengers hope to see a destination "on their own" using a local taxi or Uber to get around. The few taxis at the port wanted US$200 PER PERSON to take people to Da Nang! And the walk from the port to even the nearest village was 10km. Hoi An was interesting for about five minutes. The town is a backpacker destination and ill-equipped for the large buses which (to the surprise of all the passengers) saw us dropped off in a dusty parking lot over a mile from the town! The more elderly and disabled were unimpressed that RCL hadn't told them of the bad conditions. We had a great, real Vietnamese meal for a very reasonable price in Hoi An. We also had two experiences of shops trying to rip us off. (Sigh). HA LONG BAY Tour choices at Ha Long Bay were either the Ha Long Bay boat tour, or a longish ride to Hanoi for a tour of the capital. We did Ha Long Bay and were very impressed. Again Shore Excursions organized this tour day. When we booked our cruise with RCL we were told Ha Long Bay was a tender port. And then weeks ago we were told that we would be docking. It was a new cruise terminal built there, and we were one of the first to use it. This made the whole tour day go much smoother, of course. The boat ride through the Ha Long Bay is well organized and a nice relaxing tour. The onboard lunch was adequate, but hardly Vietnamese cuisine. ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS: The internet service on the Voyager of the Seas was far better than what we've had on Holland America, but not able to stream anything despite the hype. We purchased service for two devices but could not get it to work on more than one. Onboard support was non-existent. Windows everywhere on the ship were filthy, all the time. I commented on this to several staff but was greeted with shrugs. There didn't seem to be enough staff on this cruise liner. Room attendants were rarely seen; they had too many rooms assigned to them. We've had "relationships" with room attendants and dining room staff on all our previous cruises. Not so here - they were all too busy. Long lines at the Guest Services counter were a fixture, as were staff who spoke little English. Officers were rarely seen, either. The drinks package wasn't the only thing that was being pushed incessantly. So were the "specialty restaurants". We thought them grossly overpriced and with the pedestrian quality of the meals generally, we had no illusions that these options restaurants would be any better. Conclusion? We never expected that there would be such a wide variation in the quality and experience between cruise lines - we naively assumed they were all pretty close in overall quality. We'll never go on a Royal Caribbean Cruise again. Read Less

This was our first cruise and in the middle of a short stay in Singapore and onward trip to Bali. First impressions of the boat was quite positive from dockside. Embarkation was ok and we were on board pretty quick. but once on board we were given no information about where we could go and when we could get our room, after some time i found a crew member who advised me the pool bar was open. so myself and my wife sat at the pool bar and had a drink whilst we waited information. after a few hours we were advised via tannoy, (which was very quiet) that the room was ready. we managed to find our room which was at the front of the boat and to be fair quite nice and clean even though the interior was identical to a 1980's caravan. We then tried to get some food, this was a disaster, no tables. poor food choice and poor food quality. we found a crew member about a table who tried to get us to sit with others on a table. This is not for me or my wife, i dont expect to pay for a cruise and be expected to sit at a table with people we dont know. This happened every day of the cruise and as a consequence of this both my wife and i at very little on board. Entertainment what can i say it was shocking and whoever the entertainments manager was should be sacked. We thougfht we would see a main show one night and awaited what we thought would be a quality show (from what we had been told by our friends) when the show was introduced we found out it was two mime artist. The standard and show was so poor we left after about 5 mins. The bands around the ship were ok, but have seen better in my local clubs. the best singer was a guest who sang with the band at pool side. The pool area was ok. clean and the pool bar and service stsff were really friendly and helpfull. so as a consequence we spent most of our time on board in that area. I became also fed up with the way RC were always trying to sell stuff and became very annoying throughout. All announcements i made in English were made by people whose first language was not English and we simply could not understand a word that wa said and as a result had to keep going to reception to find out about things. The cruise has the feel of being in an average all inclusive hotel in Benidorm and was a real disappointment. so all the hype we had read about was completely false. Overall it was very disappointed with the cruise. I am gald it was not longer and as it was our first has convinced both myself and my wife i will never set foot on a cruise ship again. A shame really as we both really wanted to enjoy and hoped it would be the focus of future holidays. Read Less

Great staff, great ship, awesome friends, terrific cabin...fantastic! That was a wicked week, and it all started with the staff onboard, nothing was ever a hassle. Our servers in the MDR were some of the best I have ever encountered, met + exceeded all expectations. Voyager is due for a refurb later this year, wouldn't think it needs (only a couple of things here & there) but really the ship is in great condition...the refurb will be insane! Did a splurge for this cruise and got a Junior Suite on Deck10, right under the Windjammer...but really had no idea at all, didn't hear a thing and was able to sleep in until late :) Clean cabin, spacious, a good escape when needed. Picked this cruise for the range of ports and they didn't disappoint, Langkawi always a favourite, but Phuket was just too much fun and the food! In short loved it, pretty obvious I suppose...but as always go on with the right attitude and have the vacation you deserve :D Read Less

This is our 19th cruise. I had read many disappointing reviews of this cruise so I was a bit apprehensive. This cruise did not disappoint! First, please don't beleive all the negative comments regarding this cruise. Yes, the boat is a bit tired but it is going to get a makeover soon. Yes, it is hard to find sitting places in the Windjammer, bit you can always find a spot. The food is RC quality. Don't be worried about if you wil find food since it is destined for the Asian market. You have ALL the RC faves and more! We did not go see any shows so I cannot comment on this. My negative commment goes to the SIngapore port. If you have a plane early in the morming, good luck! You have to go through immigration and then, customs with never ending lines! For the first time, we decided to book an excursion with the ship and we were VERY disappointed. The tour of Phan nga Bay is not as advertised. Forget the êrfect picture they show to sell the tour. You do NOT stop on the James Bond island and you WILL NOT get a nice picture from the crappy boat you will be on. The service was AMAZING! Our waiters and room guy were the best! The destinations are perfect. We loved our cruise and cannot wait for our next one:) Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was my brother in laws 60th birthday and 9 of us booked to go. I was feeling rather worried after reading quite a few bad reviews after I had booked the trip and we even thought of cancelling. In fact we actually went to cancel and then changed our mind on the day. So glad we didn't cancel. The cruise was great. I had seen quite a few bad reviews, mainly about the food and the staff but also petty ones about the size of the TV in the room, the ship being run down etc etc which I just ignore anyway. Yes the ship is going in for a refit but it still looked really good. I noticed some reviewers whinged about the size of the TV but for goodness sake they need to get a life. If you really do want a big TV in your room then I suggest you pay three times the price and go 5 star on another ship as this won't work for you. I could not believe the speed in which we got on to the ship. I was anticipating a couple of hours but from start to finish it was only about 30 minutes or so. Smooth as!. Getting off was a lot slower but the Queen Mary had also docked and there were over 10,000 of us trying to get off the two ships. So the delay was due to congestion through immigration which is not the ships fault but whoever is responsible to allowing two large ships to disembark at the same time. The food was excellent. Bear in mind this was not an expensive 5-star cruise. We mainly ate in the Windjammer cafe for breakfast and the smorgasbord was really good. We always found a seat no matter what time we went and we never felt crowded or had bad service. Most of the basic dishes were the same every day but many of the main dishes changed every day. we even had Yorkshire puddings on Sunday with the roast. The food included one-off things like Lancashire hotpot, scottish tattie pancakes, grilled prawns, banoffee pie plus all the regulars like curry's, noodle dishes stir fries, roast meats, salads and veggies and cakes galore, hamburgers and fries. All in all the food was excellent. My husband is a chef and he was quite happy as was I with the food provided. Each evening we had pre-dinner drinks at one of many bars and lounges and then went to the Sapphire dining room and had a fab 3 course dinner from an extensive menu that took about 1.5 hours. Then a show afterwards and off to bed. Casino, dancing bars etc went on until the early hours in you wanted to stay up. We didn't buy the drinks package as we are not heavy drinkers. If you are, as were some of the Aussies on board who must have had pickled livers by the time they got off, then the package will be good value for you. We were offered it cheaper on the first day when we got onto the ship, than we could buy it beforehand. It worked out with the discount about AUD $1000 for two people for the 7 nights. We just bought a bottle of wine between the two of us and if there was any left after dinner they keep it for you for the next night. All of the staff that we encountered were friendly and helpful. We are easy going people so perhaps why we didn't have any issues. I imagine if everyone thinks you are a pain in the rear then you will find some problem with this ship. The problem will most likely be that you are on it. The staff were really polite and very helpful. We encountered no rude staff at all. We went to four of the shows after dinner and enjoyed them all. We also went ashore each day and took a cab and did our own thing as we have been to KL, Langkawi, Penang and Phuket before. Personally if I ever went again on this particular cruise I would stay on board for all the destinations apart from Phuket and just enjoy the relaxing holiday on the ship. KL is an hour each way from the port, worthwhile if you want to do some shopping especially shoes as it is shoe shopping heaven providing you have small feet (under size 38 or size 8) You can find good day trips available through trip advisor if you don't want to pay the inflated prices on the ship. Remember everything that you buy on the ship is in US$. All in all I will now do another cruise with Royal Caribbean and would go on this ship Voyager of the Seas again Read Less

This was planned to fit in with sightseeing in Cambodia and Vietnam before and staying with friends in Singapore afterwards. We are regulars with RC so now the ropes quite well. Check in was good, really only Miami seems bad. Gold card saves a few minutes. Cabins were ready by the time we had had our first drink. Clean, not as worn as our last ship over the years though, things like tissues and moisturiser have disappeared. $10 worked the trick! Food was up to the usual standard. We like smaller portions. Everything wrnt like clockwork Kuala Lumpur trip a bit wasted as we only got 3 hours in town. Penang was wonerful, Patang Bay really great and the elephant trip worth every penny Disembarking fine, luggage clearly marked waiting for us. Only moan was the lifeboat drill was interminable. Possible passengers the problem, but the longest one we have ever endured. On board high spot was the pianist in one of the bars. The shows mediocre, otherwise might have upped a star. The one meant to be showcasing Broadway shows was such short clips as to be useless. Probably saving royalties. All in all though, a great week. Read Less

Chose this cruise as it was part of a "cheap as chips" package from Cruise First. Probably won't book another holiday with them as was not that impressed with the service and having to fend for ourselves with all of the transfers. This was my first experience of Royal Caribbean having previously only sailed on celebrity and p&o. My first impressions were not good. Minimal communication, the worst online check in experience and a dreadful website. Forms, half the fun of a cruise is using the cruise personaliser to tailor the cruise but there was a long delay before we received the magic code and even then the website was confusing (and I work in the website business). Anyway, the day of the holiday finally arrived with the flight to Singapore on Singapore airlines. Considering we were at the back of the plane in cattleclass , the flight was really good. Singapore was an amazing city and a brilliant port to embark from. If doing an overnight, get downto marina bay for the lightshow and the gardens. The cruise terminal was a bit of a zoo as two cruises were boarding at the same time but check in was very well organised and painless. We boarded relatively early so had to wait for the cabin to be ready so rather stupidly headed to the windjammer for lunch. Not my choice as I was with my in-laws but OMG what an experience. No seating and more Australians than an ashes match at the MCG made for an experience, never to be forgotten (or repeated if I get my choice). However that is fairly normal for any cruise as people want to take full advantage of the free food from the moment they get onboard. To be honest, RCL is similar to other cruise lines (I guess it is now a proven formula) so other than the conflict created by cruising with a different mix of nationalies (predominantly Aussie and Chinese onboard which made life interesting). Good points: First time in an ocean view cabin and was actually quite impressed. Cabin steward was a bit useless with the daily newspaper missing on the first couple of nights and no statement of account on the last night. The odd duster left in the room for good measure. Dining in the main dining room was amazing. RCL had managed to book our party on different tables even though the bookings were linked but did resolve this painlessly. The menu had an Asian feel to it which was really welcome and the addition of a self service section for breakfast was a great idea. Promenade cafe. What a brilliant idea. So nice to be able grab snacks without having to fight my way through singlet clad passengers to get lunch was really welcome. The pizza and sandwiches were of really high quality. We frequented this quite a lot. Access to helipad on the front of the boat. This made for excellent sailaways as well as somewhere to hide in the evenings. The ice show. Stunning, absolutely stunning and should not be missed. Bad points Entertainment. Only went to one show which was the Aussie boys and had to walk out as it was so bad. Poolside. I am probably getting old but why oh why do the entertainment team assume that lying peacefully by the pool needs to be accompanied by loud music and inane games. Worlds sexiest man? Really? 30 minutes of my life I will never get back Smoking in the casino - why in this day and age would this be allowed. Quite beyond me. The promenade. I am sure this is popular and a great idea but all of the entertainment was on the main street (in a busking style) which made it difficult to enjoy. Particularly when you have someone in the pub playing and competing with the music on the promenade. Shops were pretty rubbish too. Lack of quiet areas with comfortable seating for those of us who enjoy a quiet evening. Other than the cabin, there are no quiet areas on this ship 3d films on the sea days. Just wanted something else to do than put up with the inane entertainment by the pool and watch a film and they decide to show 3d films. Really? Thought wearing stupid glasses to watch a film was acfad in the eighties. Obviously not in RCLs eyes. The windjammer. This was good for diets as the food was so bad. It was always busy as it was the only restaurant that allowed singlets and shorts but the food was either cold or inedible (and in some cases both). Overall the destination was amazing with amazing weather and excellent ports. The excursions were poor but that did not detract from the destination. RCL obviously targets a certain type of cruiser so if you want a really lively cruise where dressing up for a formal night means putting on a clean singlet and shorts and the entertainment is pumped out at you at load volume, wherever you are then RCL in general and this itinerary in particular is perfect. Unfortunately this does not suit me so will not be sailing with them again. Read Less

Stayed in a Junior Suite. Room is big and relatively clean, though it looks old and outdated. TV is small and bed is comfortable. House keeping is efficient and service level is acceptable. Turn down service is great. However a dirty cleaning towel was left in the basin after making up the room. All other services were terrible. Requested boarding assistance for seniors during booking but at the checking area, no assistance was offered even though she approached 3 staff. No smiles, no greetings from the staff Who looked tired and unhappy. Many staff acted as policemen onboard, telling passengers to queue and queue and to follow whatever rules they set to control the crowd. Lack of dinning tables and activities, shows. Saw two friends queuing to enter the buffet restaurant but they were told to go in two different batches and find each other inside the restaurant later. Certain sections of the main dinning rooms were always closed, scheduled show was cancelled due to technical reason. The only exception was the salesman who kept on introducing their chargeable items. Food is sufficient. Read Less
