We were a family group of six, siblings and spouses, and for all of us a first time. It seemed good value but you’ll pay hefty prices for services, drinks and excursions so be cautious about your budget. It’s an old boat but quite charming with teak decks and some quirky features. It’s difficult to fault the staff who work extremely hard and are almost all polite, friendly and helpful. The exception are the reception staff who, apart from one individual, were unhelpful and abrupt. They seem to need more training in customer service. This was a very staid and generally fairly boring cruise. The customers are on the whole very elderly, and, on the round British cruise, almost all British. The activities are limited and I found them uninspiring. Bad lectures, boring games and quizzes. The performers for the evening show work very hard but the staging leaves a lot to be desired and sound system is poor and flattens the voices of the singers. Take several good books or something to do for the lengthy periods at sea. The food - what can I say- two weeks of very boring and mostly bland food. I’m a vegetarian and the options are v limited. For example, spinach and pasta swamped in bechamel served with chips. I eat fish - but served with relentless monotony with sliced boiled potatoes and carrots. Two weeks of the same meal :(. Meat eaters complained of tough, leathery meat and we were often served luke warm or cold food. We had a booked table in the evenings but ate buffet meals breakfast and lunch. These are better but cafes often v overcrowded and no seats. There’s always bread and butter puddling and custard at lunch time and warm scones for tea. But a buffet salad for a vegetarian - chopped onions, tomatoes, cucumber, olives and cold Brussels sprouts every single day. A couple of slices of cheese. I was desperate for fresh food and leafy veg. Excursions are well organised but expensive. And not very adventurous. If you don’t book an excursion, some ports, Cork for example, mean lengthy complementary bus transfers to get into the city; Lerwick is a short walk from the dock; Kirkwall has a v efficient free bus. Mull was a tender, but v lengthy waits to get onto one if you wanted to go ashore because passengers on excursions take priority. Honfleur a shuttle bus but v close; Bristol a long way from the port, Dublin 30 minutes in shuttle but easy to do; didn’t go into Belfast but it was also a shuttle similar to Dublin. Read Less

Our first and last cruise, very disappointing especially the food which aims for quantity rather than quality. Food was very repetitive, poor choice and poor quality, for example Kraft cheese slices sometimes the only cheese on offer!! Staff not friendly, service was always slow. You've already paid your tips so I guess they don't care. In the buffet restaurant although the staff cleared the tables between diners they never wiped them so if you came late you had a dirty table. Evening entertainment was disappointing. Repetitive song and dance shows, the, best entertainment was the comedian who was actually OK. There was constant maintenance work being carried out which meant stairs up to upper decks were often closed off. They offer WiFi which doesn't actually work, so what's the point Excursions were very expensive and we heard people on the one excursion we did saying they had been to the same place 2 days running. Overall a bad experience, don't recommend it and wouldn't return Read Less

The Norwegian Fjords were stunning and the weather was spectacular, the cruise experience not so much. Disappointing... The ship while kept clean is in need of a refurb. The service in the bars and for coffee is excruciating slow. We waited for over and hour in the captains lounge just to get a coffee, and had to chase it 3 times before we got 2 cups...getting drinks was equally as slow all the time. Very frustrating and you had to wait for waiter service, no other option. The crew were not easy to engage with, and some were downright rude. Very happy to talk and laugh between themselves, but as the customers were felt like an inconvenience. Breakfast was a farce most mornings, and we tried different times, food had run out leading to long queues, no toast, not even mugs to get tea and coffee, just a joke, and set the day off on the wrong note every morning. Scots bar was closed one evening for a staff party! But the ship was heading to Newcastle when we came home then to tilbury with perhaps very few passengers, could the staff party have been then? Not a pleasant trip, and many of our travellers we ate with in the evening had complained on board about the service. Good food and service ok at the evening dinner. I would be very reluctant to recommend the Marco Polo or cruise Maritime after our experience, and it’s unlikely we would want to travel with them again, which is disappointing as they will be sailing from Aberdeen in 2020. The company need to review their management of the catering areas for b/fast and lunch, train the crew to be customer focused, and look to refresh the ship if they hope to get return Business. Not what we were looking forward to on the cruise. To let you understand how disappointed we were in 40 years of travel and holidays, this is the 1st time we have complained. A TA told us about overnight cruises where the ship is repositioned and you can stay and received food and entertainment at a reasonable price. We went from Newcastle to Rosyth(Edinburgh). We had an outside cabin that was small and dated. We were told check-in was 550pm, when we got to our room we had a message to say we had to be on the 6pm dinner sitting.(If we'd been on the later sitting we could have used the health facilites and they'd have made some money!) We got there as quick as we could and then had trouble getting served (ship was full). Late on during our meal we were told 3 times to hurry up as they wanted to prepare for the next sitting! Food apart from the tenderloin was very average. Bars and staff were lovely, drink/cocktails very reasonable. Went to the cabaret which had a delayed start but we didn't know how long the delay would be and the band were sat around texting. Show was OK but short. DJ and dancing was very good. Sadly they added £7 per person to our drinks bill and if you had a drink after midnight you got charged again. You have to vacate your room by 730am and we were told we would not disembark until 930am. Ship was chaotic as people left bags everywhere and the staff didn't manage//organise the process. Breakfast was plentiful but chaotic. Disembarkation was delayed as they had no ramp and had to submit some rickety stairs! Staff did not magage expectations and were due to passengers asking for advice as how long the delay would be at what the process would be, in the end the passengers took over and just all lined up and forced embarkation. Lots of hours of boredom. The ship is very old and has "out of service" signs in several services and machines. Entertainig activities are unatended "meetings" mostly and the shows are quite poor and focused on old people. Even Games room has no games but puzzles. Food quality is under the expectations for a cruise and it is unavailable from 8.30 p.m. to 6.30 a.m., in addition to pauses between meals, and the buffet (only place where you can get 2 of the 4 meals in the day) is too small to have seats for all passengers, so it is crowded and uncomfortable. Sound isolation in cabins is almost inexistent and air conditioner makes a consant and annoying noise that could not be fixed for the ship staff (they simply said there was not a solution for that). Worst think: Tender disembarkation system is terrible and makes you loose 2-4 hours in any port where it was necessary to use them (about half of the total). We had to wait 6 hours in Flam and 4 hours in Kirkwall, for example. Tenders are too old, had malfunctions that increased the delays and spelled diesel fumes over the passengers. The worst cruise I have ever been. Read Less

I only chose Marco Polo in order to get to Greenland. The boat is very shabby and I don't think much has been done, cosmetically, since her last major refit in 1995. The computers broke down at registration, causing a delay, but they then let us on ship without any security checks. From that moment everyone's security was compromised until return to Tllbury. The first tendering at Kirkwall was terrible. Ticketing started at 0900 and we received ours at 0915 but had to wait ages - until we landed ashore at 1210. They didn't have enough tenders operating and those that were, were uncoordinated. A massive list formed at return time and the harbourmaster contacted the Captain to ask for more tenders. We heard from a number of sources that the Captain refused. After a written complaint I received a letter of management speak blaming the wind??? and the harbour authorities. We had an emergency muster alarm early morning whilst most were in bed. A Faulty alarm. These things can happen but it was badly handled and we weren't given any explanation or apology until the Captain was forced to make a PA announcment mid morning. Also some staff wandered around with bouyancy aids but lacking direction. At NUUK, the Greenland Capital, coahes didn't arrive for excursions. 1st excuse - traffic, then the excursion leader admitted that the coach company had forgotten and said, "That's Greenland". Why didn't she check up the day before? The boat is poorly managed, the Bistro staff are inefficient and lack decent training.If you show them dirty cups or cracked cups, you cannot be confident that they fully understand the problem and the cups continually re-appear. Cold plates for hot meals and warm plates for salads. etc. The Bistro is not good enough to compete with transport cafes. The cupboards are like '50's kitchenettes and even poorly painted. Llttle variety of breakfast offerings. However, we dined in the main restaurant every evening and the food was excellent. terrific selection, well made, hot and well presented.A different kitchen from the Bistro, but we presume still under the head chef? The entertainment was first class every evening and the guest speakers were above par. We will not sail with CMV again. We feel they are a disgrace to the cruising industry, and clearly operate Marco Polo on a shoestring. They tsake a very poor attitude to grumbles or complaints, argueing with passengers instead of trying to solve the problem. Read Less

We wanted to go to Greenland and when the offer came up grabbed it. However wished we had paid more with another operator. Paid for a better room when booking however found on when on board some people had been upgraded to our cabin category they had paid £1,000 less than us. Ship old, no comfortable chairs inside other than the 5 in the library. Chairs in dining room dirty, chairs in Show Lounge not fixed to the ground meant anyone sitting in them restricted the view of those behind. Food average selected mozzarella and tomato as a starter processed cheese was on our plate! No lectures about Greenland or Iceland. Best of all were the staff who were all very nice. Anyone thinking of going again with C&M I advise seriously consider going with another cruise line especially if you go to Greenland - better to pay more for an expedition ship or Hurtigruten. We boarded and informed the ship had only one engine. This was replaced 12 days into our cruise. This meant we were unloaded and loaded at small jetties spent hours on coaches and less time at our destinations. A lock broke near Frankfurt which put us back another 12 hours. The ship is not fit for purpose. The toilet system broke down 3 times. Internet very bad reception. T V was in German had not been switched to a English satellite. The food was O K but deserts terrible. Coffee in the restaurant to strong and cold complained to the Hotel Manager but no improvement. Staff in restaurant needed training not serving ladies first, reaching across to deliver or pick up plates. The temperature control in our cabins did not work. We some times had to endure unpleasant smells when docked closed to other ships. The ship needed net curtains to most cabins for privacy when in port or docked next to another ship. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was a repositioning cruise and the itinerary looked amazing. I normally only give good reviews or just not review at all, if the experience was bad. However, I want people to know about this. Some things you can not make a big deal about, others are unacceptable. We were sold a bill of goods from the Cruise and Maritime Florida office. We knew the ship was older (originally Holland America - then sold to P&O - and now in the CMV fleet). However, we were told we were boarding a completely refurbished ship. That was not the case at all. There were plumbing issues throughout. Many toilets overflowing and hot/cold water issues. There were also HVAC issues. Some cabins and public areas were FREEZING and others were HOT. We had to complain 3x before someone even came to look at our cabin. It was meat locker cold. We covered up the A/C vents and kept our balcony door open most of the journey so I did not have to wear layers of winter clothes in my cabin. The thermostats were so ancient, you could not even turn them off. The cabins had nice bedding and towels - although we had to beg for bathrobes/dressing gowns (which we were told came with our level of cabin). Cabins were all original and aging - stuffing coming out if seams of the couch, peeling wallpaper, etc. It really needed updating. We had a tub with jets, but they never worked. Dining was hit or miss. Some meals were good, others not so much. In the bistro it was not serve yourself so you had to ask for portion size of specific foods. Some of the staff had little command of the English language, so they would put the wrong things on your plate. Some stations had long lines and it was not laid out very well. Also for some odd reason, people were stealing the salt and pepper shakers - so we had to keep getting up and borrowing ones from other tables. Things like this you pass off as new crew, different ship in the fleet, things will be off. I do accept maiden voyage glitches. However, there were a couple of things which were completely unacceptable: 1. We were told to board the ship on 22 April by CMV Florida office. However, when we arrived jetlagged in Singapore to the cruise terminal a porter acted like we were idiots and told us to come back tomorrow. No ship today. We were stunned and lost - not even having a hotel booked. CMV had all our contact information (phone, email) and yet they did not even tell us in advance that the date was incorrect. This is just plain and simple poor business. 2. The people working in reception on the ship initially were cold and rude. I brought receipts to them the first day for compensation for our hotel/food costs the night before (as I was instructed to do by CMV) and they basically told me I was an stupid and should have known when to board. This woman actually said, "How can anyone be so stupid to board on the wrong day? It clearly states boarding on 23 April." as she was emphatically pointing at the CMV Vasco da Gama brochure. I have NEVER EVER been treated so disrespectfully by a reception person on a ship. And I was being nice just dropping off the receipts. I never received any transparency or an explanation about this horrible mistake. It took them nearly 4 days to respond and give us a bottle of wine for our troubles - which we didn't need since we already bought the drink package. I would never take another cruise on a CMV ship. They are terrible with customer service. However, I will say this - the crew, in general, did their best with what they had to work with. Most were kind. The ports were very cool and varied. The passengers we met onboard we awesome. Despite all the issues, we had a good vacation! Read Less

We choose this cruise to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The ship was old and tired and leaked. Our cabin carpet was wet the whole cruise and I was sick the whole cruise. It was only when we disembarked that I got over the virus I had the whole cruise. The ship needs a full refurbishment so that the hallways/rooms are not full of dryers trying to dry the smelly carpets the whole time. The dining experience was not good to start with but as it was a maiden voyage the staff needed time to find their way around the ship too. By the end of the cruise the meals were fine, all except the grill restaurant where you had to pay an additional charge. We went there twice thinking it might improve but it didn't. Don't waste your money there. The steaks were tough and dry. The entertainment was not good, the person who got the biggest crowds was the lecturer who outlined the ports and the history of where we were. The staff, all except the front desk, did their best but they seemed to have been thrown in the deep end with little support from their head office. Also the hand sanitizing on the ship was not enforced and I think this must also have had something to do with the very large number of sick people on this cruise. I would never cruise with CMV again. Read Less

we've just come back from majestic fjords with beautiful scenery and weather but alas was a disaster the ship was full the room was small uncomfortable and very noisy broken sleep with funnel next door no transfer of room available several complaints unresolved reception issues couldn't get a buffet table was like being on a Costa ship Also the cost was very reasonably priced on the face of it.. but.. When you factors in cost of excursions and car parking then not so reasonable. So.. if the basics are not right.. then you can't really fully enjoy the good bits. Good Majestic fjord land Very relaxing with beautiful scenery Awesome in fact but that's the natural side of fjords for you with 3d passages that melt away and mountain overhangs you can almost touch as the ship sails through occasional narrow channels but you have to be up on deck at the right time to see them 1 particular spot was like the scene from Jason and the argonauts were Neptune pops up out of the water to save the ship from clashing cliff tops. Weather from other previous holiday comments weather could be very wet especially in Bergen but Unexpectedly the weather was gloriously sunny all week although occasionally very windy and cold Room Free use of safe Tea making but limited with small table and kettle Only 2 sockets in room Bed very uncomfortable and small for me Food Good value food with excellent English breakfast On gala and captains night the cuisine was excellent on other nights could be average though Cream teas and biscuits are to die for unfortunately everyone else felt the same.! when everyone comes back from days out at same time there are queues and shoving going on then finding a table is difficult too when ship is at capacity, which rather takes most of the pleasure out of it. The food is very good in general if not repetitive tho, sometimes bland and not very hot all of the time but one has to remember the cost of some of the cruises. The service is good in general as the staff trying hard to accommodate everyone but again because of this you can be waiting for 15 mins or more for a drink in certain bars. Cocktails of the day are usually very good and reasonably cheap at £3.50 per day. They did a wheat beer at same price which was a bonus as it's 1 of my favourites even tho its £1.25 in aldis I was just happy to see it as most cruises don't seem to accommodate wheat beer usually Bad Beds uncomfortable Small room and shower Tv poor Our room 5111 very noisy all day and all night Also had smelly gas smells from engines and main funnel Complained twice but not taken seriously. Like trying to sleep on a rollercoaster 1st time they sprayed carpet for smells 2nd time gave me ear plugs which were not adequate. Said they were full and couldn't change my room but found out later that they hold back some rooms in case of emergency. So our 50th and 60th birthday holiday was spoiled through lack of sleep and rest. 1st dining time too early and 2nd too late Only 1 buffet restaurant which was packed full several times with no spare tables and a scramble to get anything. The 2 main service restaurants too slow when busy and food some times not hot enough even when not busy. Excursions over priced and not good value when you can walk off and do some of the so called tours for nothing or a lot less when you just pop into tourist information and a small "what's available?" We wanted a taste of river cruising so this seemed ideal. Embarkation at Poole was quick however a little back to front, you picked up your cruise card at the port, then got on the ship to "check in", have passports checked etc, then were taken to your cabin where your room keys were waiting for you. We booked last minute so the only available cabin was "Inside Guarantee" which was surprisingly larger than expected although really disappointed that the beds could not be put together to form a double. No kettle/tea/coffee making facilities. Bath in bathroom was a bonus. Entertainment was pretty basic, don't get me wrong, the all worked really, really hard but don't expect any Broadway type shows! We found the menu in the Restaurant quite limited and basic, and the portions fairly small. Staff were really helpful and friendly, no long waits at either bar or restaurants. Cocktail of the Day was a nice touch. No "snacks" available late night or if you miss breakfast (which ends at 930am) Due to bad weather most out door areas were mostly closed and the crossing both there and back was the worst I've ever experienced, sick bags and sickness pills were in plentiful supply! Both stops (Honfleur and Rouen) were really pretty, we did not book excursions but visited the areas where the shuttle bus dropped you. Casino was a bit of a waste really, only 1 member of staff to run a Blackjack Table or Roulette Table alternatively between giving out tokens for the slots. Read Less

Last minute cruise with interesting itinerary; however travellers beware, you get what you pay for. The ship has limited facilities for pleasure on sea days; the entertainment was poor at the best of times. The excursions were not great value for money and were limited. Excursion staff had limited knowledge and did not understand you as their English was limited. This also applies to the reception crew. If you wanted to lose weight on a cruise this is the one to go on; the food was extremely poor with limited choice and odd combinations of food were put together. What the chef described as a cheese and onion tart was in fact a slice of quiche served with parsley sauce. The chef obviously lacked imagination and flair and did not have an educated palette for flavours. I am well aware of food recycling to ensure budgets are met; however I think bread and butter pudding or a combination of different egg custards everyday can get boring especially when lacking flavour. The best meal of the day was breakfast; however even a microwave technician can cook an egg. On a positive note the superior outside cabin was comfortable and clean. Cabin boys diligent in their work ethic. Read Less

First time with cruise maritime voyages and was disappointed. I should have realized a European cruise line was not to the expectation of the US branded companies. Food was not even average and must have been tailored to the English crowd. Of the 1350 passengers 95% we from UK, 2% from USA and remaining from elsewhere. Itinerary changes made to accommodate the UK flight arrangements took us from our main stop (Belize) that I had booked this a year in advance. Also while on cruise ports of call cancelled. Read what force majeure means cause they use this as there reasons to cancel without regards to your expectations. Entertainment was lacking through out and the only highlight would be the nightly ship show. Casino non existent, food & buffets had sub par quality and no variety of choices. Cabins spacoius but a/c cooling lacked. As I looked forward to sharing this time with my wife it ended up being quite boring on board and the ports we're of great relief to find something to be excited about. No frills of the ship and the age groups were of retiree. Pools we're occasionally shut down and created a boring trip. Servers were not attentative to your needs and lacked the courtesy to ensure you were pleased & had the service you expected. Hope they find improvement moving forward to 2019 but I would recommend other companies to spend your time with. Sorry CMV but wanted to give an honest review and would like to see you improve services to better cater to your Passengers. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it was the time of the year we wanted to travel & the ship was calling into ports of calls we have never visited, competitively priced. About 2 weeks before departure we received a letter saying that we would be flying to Cancun instead of Cozumel & this meant that we would not be going to stop at Belize. Very dissappointed as this was one of the main reasons that we had booked this cruise. It is my understanding that the plane chartered from Virgin Atlantic could not use the runway at Cozumel as it was too large! Surely this was known to C&M some time before! When we landed at Cancun we waited 1 hour for our luggage then dragged our cases for 10 minutes to musty coaches that took 40 minutes to Playa del Carmen where we were marched crocodlie style through the resort for 30 minutes, to then wait 20 minutes for the packed dieslel-smelling ferry. The crossing took 40 minutes then 30 minutes to board the ship when we had to go to the theare for the Mexican face-to-face immigration then registration. At approx midnight we were offered flat Cava or warm juice and the snacks had all gone. We finally got to bed at 02.00. Many passengers were of retirement age & a few less mobile, how these people faired I can't begin to imagine! The embarkation was a totally grewling shambles. There was no apology by any of the cruise staff written or verbal. What about an appology from the captain? Shame on you. The following morning we went to reception to ask for some onboard credit (why was none given to all passengers?) after several emails to head office in the UK this was refused & 'force majeure' was used used as the excuse. We have twice written to C&M since returning home to request compenstion but none has been offered that we are happy with, nor do they acknowledge any responsbility any of this. We moved cabins 5165 to 6112 due to the boom boom of the engine, spacious & clean. Cabin stewards excellent. We were overall happy with the food. For 3 days the swimming pool was drained, 1 day for swell but the other 2 for poor water quality! The tours except for the Chiva Bus Party in Cartagena were overpriced & lacked content. The port lecturer for the Panama Canal was excellent. A large number of the activities were unhosted. The Yoga took place on deck 11 not enough mats some passengers in the sun with no shelter. Other posts have covered other shortcomings so I won't duplicate....I could go on. Overall I woud never cruise with C&M again, as their customer care was none existant compaired to other cruise lines. They are hiding behind the terms & conditions not giving a dot for good will which would possibly result in repeat boookings. The whole experience has been so upsetting to have the need to complain on returning home mars the whole trip. A gesture of good will in the form of onbaord credit to all passengers would have put C&M in a more favourable light. Read Less

Cabin We were given a tiny, windowless cabin on the lowest deck known as Carabic. The smell of diesel is so overpowering it leaves a taste in your mouth as you leave the tiny lift. We paid for an inner cabin and the offer suggested a free upgrade that never happened; despite this the cabin was serviceable and kept spotlessly clean by Lillia our Cabin Stewart. The two twin beds were smaller than a regular single but were rewarded with fresh crisp linen daily along with the white as wave towels. The cabin was serviceable and a little larger than I expected. The draw space and hanging space was well utilised for storing the plethora of formal wear needed on the cruise. 3 single wardrobes housed rails, the safe and a set of small draws along with a tie rack. The top space held the life jackets and could be used for storing larger items. The storage of suitcases was difficult but we squeezed them under the beds, this would be impossible with the hard shell cases but our smaller softer cases compressed to fit. The bathroom optimised the available space and provided a shower with a detachable head; the pressure was good and left us feeling refreshed. The toiletries supplied were limited and of a poor quality. The descenders in the showers were tricky to use when slippery and wet but we had brought our own and recommend travellers do the same. The standard of cleaning in the cabin is outstanding and I have never had a better standard anywhere in the world. Twice each day the room is cleaned and turned back at night, clothes folded for you, bins emptied, dressing area organised. It feels like Mary Poppins has visited each time you return. Captain’s Club This comfortable area is rarely unoccupied, in the day it’s bright clean interior attracts people hoping to relax and have a drink and at night it is a waiting area for people preparing for the show lounge cabaret. A delightful pianist and violinist play at various times on most evenings but they could not be enjoyed because they became inaudible within the busy room full of chattering guests. A beautiful resource that is sadly under appreciated and lost amongst the people. Sadly this area is understaffed and many guests treat the overworked staff appallingly. I have witnessed so many occasions where guests have berated, abused and directly verbally attacked the young staff. The waiting time for drinks is over 30 minutes or more and there does seem to be a favouring of those guests without a drinks package over those who have the package. This highlights another anomaly in the pricing of the drinks package. If I ordered a quadruple whisky this would be included in the package BUT a latte coffee would not. This seems rather unfair and does not encourage sensible drinking. My main issue with this area is the lack of tables for two persons. Most of the tables are laid out as 4s and so it negates any privacy or time for couples to enjoy together. Most of the time the lounge is quite full and so people sit with you and want to chat. A lovely thing to happen on a friendly ship but there are times when I would have appreciated some time alone with my husband. This layout was further hindered by the many Zimmer frames, walking trollies and walking sticks that created an ever changing obstacle course for people to negotiate. Scott’s Bar This is a lively little venue however after 10 all entertainment moves to this bar and sadly the area is far too small for the number of visitors using it. It was almost impossible to see both the show at 9 in the show lounge and then get a seat upstairs. Sadly we missed out because if this. The bar staff in this area are good and much quicker than in other areas of the ship. Many of the soft furnishings in this area are broken and are uncomfortable but this is only if you are fast enough to get a seat. Marco’s Bistro Terrible! This restaurant is appalling and I am afraid it has deteriorated during the cruise. The food is luke warm at best and stagnant and congealed most of the time. The choice is poor with mostly chopped meat dishes and diced over cooked soggy vegetables. The sweet section at lunch and dinner are poor with small portions of poorly presented sweets that include many cold puddings and whips. The majority of food has a soft blended texture ideal if chewing is best avoided! The cutlery includes only soup spoons rather than desert or tea spoons, so one must stir tea, eat cake and cereal with a soup spoon. Usually there is a shortage of cutlery throughout the restaurant at all 3 meals. My biggest annoyance was having to collect food in relays as people would take your seat between courses. Lone diners would find it impossible to eat all courses in the same seat. Main Restaurant This area is stunning and despite the tatty table cloths, with more pulls than a grandmother’s stocking, it is warm and welcoming. The staff try hard but the lack of organisation makes this a doomed enterprise. We were sat on a table of six and we were so close to other tables that the waiters played limbo to get about carrying the trays. The menus allowed for a choice but really what you received was like Russian roulette. I ordered ice cream and got sorbet, ordered pasta and got pork! This seemed to happen every night to at least one person in the table. The delay between courses was ridiculous with a 90 minute wait on Christmas Day between starter and main. This improved to 50 minutes on Boxing Day. We eventually complained and the time between courses reduced but the game of roulette continued. Midnight snacks Pathetic! These are carried around on a tray and given out in tiny portions on serviettes. I was blessed with grease down my ball gown as the waiter spilt them all down me on Christmas Eve! Not the wonderful plan I had for my dress which is now ruined. Deck Bar Swimming pool! More of a puddle than a pool. I heard it called a splash pool, a great name as it just splashes icy water over people sat at tables around it. The slippery deck is then a risk to the shuffling older people who hope to sit by it. No one used it as it is covered with a net, a complete waste of deck space and a blooming pain in the neck! The bar out here is well stocked and enticing but the wait time for a drink is so long you contemplate jumping overboard! The waiting staff meander about, avoiding eye contact and rarely engage with people. I have found this the worst area to get a drink and have often given in and had a self service coffee rather than nothing. Entertainment The entertainment team includes some excellent singers with talent way beyond this ship. Callum, Anneka and Savannah brighten every room when they enter and their talent shines through. The others are not quite as talented but what they lack in ability they make up for in enthusiasm. Mitch makes everyone smile and excelled at Elvis and some swing but he struggles with more challenging songs. Not all of the songs the entertainers sing suit their voices and even the best of them murder some songs. The Wuthering Heights needs to be pulled ASAP! Daytimes are dull. Little if any entertainment goes on and much is not hosted. The entertainment seems to be aimed at the older generation with Knit and Natter and Bridge. We attended the Creative Writing and although we enjoyed the sharing of creative works the gentleman who ran the session was poor. He talked. A lot! He then got everyone to write and share. The feedback was peer feedback with little input from him. There was no development of people’s skill, no feedback or development of ideas. The next session repeated exactly the first in format and activities. The room was too small and the delivery needs to be improved. The tutor led session was didactic and lacked any imagination. Ironic given it was a creative writing class. The exception to the poor daytime activities was the Morecombe and Wise Comedy lecture that was excellent. It was well planned, entertaining and engaging, giving rise to much laughter and good spirits. The presenter was knowledgeable and very talented. Excursions The excursions are very expensive however they are well organised and have a high standard of tour guide. We did 3 different excursions and booked a fourth that was unfortunately cancelled. The first tour of Gibraltar was on a minibus and took us to the Rock, the Caves and the museum. The guide was excellent and entertained and informed us. He was relaxed and the tour took longer than expected but it was worth every second of my time. The second tour took us around a very foggy and rainy Funchal. To be honest the tour should have been cancelled due to the weather. The views were totally covered by a thick blanket of fog making visibility about 3 meters maximum. The guide tried her best but coffee and cake at a golf club and a walk to a wine tasting cost us £48 each. Very disappointing! The 3rd trip around a freezing cold Lisbon was a march, following a bossy school mistress who barked at us and constantly repeated herself. When people asked for rendezvous times she wouldn’t give them insisting we stayed with her. The visit to the monastery allowed no time to contemplate the beautiful place or enter into prayer. It was a fast walk through and a sit on a pew whilst she talked and talked constantly repeating herself. Disappointing. Read Less

After a two hour drive we arrived in Dover getting on the ship went well, we were told that the self service was closed ( but found out later it was open) there should have been a kettle in our cabin that was missing so no warm cuppa. First evening meal in the restaurant was not very good, also we ask for a table for 6/8 given one for 4. Then found out the ship had not been repaired so had to miss Gibraltar so that meant 5 day's at sea with not a lot to do. Ship repaired in Tenerife. 31/12 arrived in Madeira> My husband went on a excursion I didn't because it was a tender. I am disabled (having a bad day) so I stayed on board. He left me at 8.45 I next saw him at 7.15 because they stopped the tenders for safety reasons, leaving hundreds on shore either sat on the tenders or stood out in the rain, last people got back around 11.30 all missing their Grand New Years Eve meal as we did. A lot of people missed the fireworks at midnight as they were either too ill or too tired to stay up. We did see the fireworks were spectacular, they were what nearly all the passages had gone to see. The disembarkation was a joke we had crew members with cases or large bags pushing passed paying passengers to get of the ship, maybe like a lot of the passengers they too couldn't wait to get off. After showing our sea passes there were new staff walking towards us to get on the same way as everyone was getting off. They were so rude bearing in mind their ages compared to the passengers, who were mainly OAP's or disabled like myself. Read Less

We chose this ship as we sailed in her 18 months previously and apart from very average food in the Waterfront Restaurant we had a good time. We were in need of some serious R&R after a very difficult year and the children were happy to go elsewhere. We therefore booked the courier service through SAGA to take us to Tilbury & back. The day before we left the embarkation was changed to Dover where extra repairs had to be made apparently although why was never mentioned by the captain or the crew. Embarkation was fast and efficient but from there it all went downhill. The excursion to Amsterdam canals was organised during the daylight hours and the famous lights were not evident. A waste of time & money. As soon as we left there we were informed that the scheduled stop in Gibraltar had been cancelled as the repairs had not been effected in Dover. So after 5.5 days at sea suffering with very mediocre food in the main restaurant and indifferent entertainment in the Palladium we arrived in Tenerife earlier than stated. The excursion booked was thoroughly dangerous on roads unsuitable for big coaches and little or no safety barriers on bends with 400' or more drops. So decided to cancel rest of excursions but no refund given and money taken to cancel! Best was New Years' firework display but some 600 or so very bruised and battered passengers may not agree after suffering appalling conditions tendering to the mainland in rough seas when no other cruise liners were offering this and then being left for hours to fend for themselves when the weather worsened. All in all we felt that there was a lack of care for the passengers exhibited by the officers and heads of departments, although the staff on the ground so to speak were friendly and helpful. The wine cellar choice was little short of abysmal. If you drink dry wine only you will be ok as that is all they have and the spirit measures are extremely small. Luckily we took out a VIP package and came out on top. The best drinks were definitely the cocktails and the lovely coffees. Food was poor except for the buffet on the top but not easy to get drinks up there. The whole ethos of Christmas was missing. Embarkation was a total shambles and as there was a DOA in one of the cabins even more delay ensued with a free for all at the exit to the dock building. Would we go again.....answer no as it appears the shipping line is more interested in making money at all costs than looking after the comfort of it's passengers and our experience was worse than the previous trip. This xmas/New years cruise was calling at two ports we really wanted to visit. We had to embark at Dover not Tilbury because of problems with the propeller from the previous cruise .when we left Dover the captain informed us that the fault had not been repaired and so after Amsterdam we would have to sail to Tenerife missing Gib thus having to be at sea for five days not three ! Our cabin had a lot of vibration because of the fault which was repaired in Tenerife. The Canarys were fine but when we arrived at Madeira it started to go wrong the sea was very choppy but they said that tenders were going ashore which we found suprising because the Cunard ship anchored next to us did not tender. When we got ashore we enjoyed a few hours in Funchal then at 2o/c it started to rain so we went to the jetty only to be told that tenders had been suspended ! We finally got back on board at 10past10 at night after 8 hours in the rain at no time were we given any info about what was happening we missed the Gala dinner and show / fireworks and sail away party. We were so wet and cold we had a shower and went to bed. I feel that a bad decision was made because of excursions etc and passengers and crew were put at risk because of this. CMV have made a derisory offer and 20%off any further cruises after this experience we do not feel inclined to cruise. Read Less

I do not normally publish criticism however iwas gravely disappointed with this trip. As an opportunity to visit the Belgian Christmas markets and pre evaluate the Magellan ahead of booking am iceland tour i am glad i did. I appreciate iam used to the celebrity and Royal Caribbean experience but this was ahuge step down I terms of experience. Embarking was slick, no problems and kept well to time. Impresssed. Cabin. The size of my seaview cabin was fine, the protruding ciachman needs which sick or even when closed was the cause of a few bumped heads but not a real problem. Very clean throughout. Thank you to Olga. General ship experience. The ship is ok, it is abut of a midpoint between a cruise ship and a ferry but ok. Obviously too cold for the unheated sea water pool which had been drained. Food. This was one area which hugely disappointed. The breakfast range was three however the quality of good was not great. Croissants did not appear fresh, more like the long life croissants you can buy in a supermarket. Black scarred bananas, dry muffins also below par. The main restaurant food was generally acceptable but not that impressive. All edible but certainly not melt in the mouth meat for example. Additionally, availability of snacks and cold drinks was very poor. From closure of the main restaurant there was no cold drink available (not even water unless you want to drink from your bathroom tap which is not for me! ) unless purchased as as extra cost from the bar. No access to savoury snacks or even biscuits afterdinner. Only Cakes available for purchase in one bar. Formal night declared on pre cruise information brought formal wear to find Only very casual nights. Entertainment. I am afraid the cast tried valiently but the show was poor in comparison to what we have previously experienced. Long gaps between songs which did not flow from one to another, weak and unfortunately, fairly average vocals i would place in a holiday camp. (Far far better than anything i can achieve i acknowledge and not meant as a personal attack on the artists). Really nice theatre though. Excursion to brussels. Your guide Bob was very good. Knowledgeable, engaging and helpful. A good day out. Disembarkation Asked to vacate cabin before 07.30 although disembarkation scheduled for post 9.30. The ship is laid up for several days before next trip so not sure why it was necessary to crowd lounges unnecessarily either. In essence i would suggest as a first cruise experience this is an acceptable trip but if you have enjoyed the more refined offerings of the likes of royal Caribbean or celebrity this will probably not hit the mark. The cruise came in a little cheaper than the big players but to be honest when you add what you spend on the 'Missing extras' like cold drinks it works out pretty much the same cost. Read Less

Ship was good in parts; Positive aspects - - Embarkation was smooth (once we'd eventually found the car park) - Public areas clean and well presented - Entertainment in theatre better than anticipated (if a little jingoistic) - Drink prices reasonable - Excursions good value and efficiently run. However on the negative side - Muster drill - it would have been helpful if it had been made clear in advance that this was to be held outside on the open deck . Many passengers turned up dressed for the meeting points which were inside and were clearly unprepared for spending half an hour outside in December. Service - the impression was that a high proportion of the staff were completely inexperienced and had just been recruited en masse from a dole queue somewhere in eastern Europe. Although there were honourable exceptions some of the bar staff had little idea of concepts like "short" or "tall" or indeed what was on their menus. Training appeared to have been non existent and there was a tendency for less experienced members of staff to avoid any interaction with customers - which resulted in waits in excess of an hour to be served at some times - in a half empty bar! Also had the unusual experience of receiving a whiskey and ginger in a pint beer glass. Food - in the main restaurant was served slowly and often received cold. Some was absolutely dire - notably "chicken lollipops" which were battered Chicken bones, devoid of any meat (recycling at its finest). Desserts were generally poor both in quality and quantity and generally reminiscent of a fairly rough all inclusive eastern mediterranean resort. - We sampled the delights of main restaurant breakfast once only on the first day. That was quite enough. Buffet breakfast was marginally better, but totally inadequate for the number of passengers trying to use it. Buffet lunch was sparse and looked unappetising - we didn't risk it. By the time we had reached Antwerp we gave up, lunched ashore and brought cakes back to stave off hunger in the evening. Best meal of the trip. - Special mention needs to made of the wine waiter who not only appeared to be unable to open a bottle without customer assistance, but also had a retention shorter than a goldfish - having taken our order he reappeared at the table a few minutes later asking if he could take our order . . . - The shop was slightly bizarre. If you had a fetish for Whittard Teas or Greek olive oil, you would love it. Otherwise choice was a little limited and essentials virtually non existent. - Disembarkation was "different" - we had to vacate cabins by 7 in the morning (a full hour before docking) and all Express passengers (probably about 50%) had to assemble with luggage in the Atrium. Overcrowded is an understatement. Three final points - - This may sound critical of the staff - it's not intended to be; it felt rather the result of inadequate training than any failing of individual members. - It's a shame that a ship which has got things so right in some areas is let down so substantially in others. - Would we use CMV again? Unless we were convinced that the service and food issues had been resolved, not a chance! Read Less

We chose this trip as we wanted to see Norway and the Northern lights. When we got to Tibury we were sent round in circles. The signs were few and far between and not very well positioned. We followed the signs only to be told that we were in the wrong area. It was like Custers last stand! There were cars going round and round in circles all being in the wrong place. We finally got to the right area and had to sit under a marquee with rain, whipped up by high winds, blowing through!! The first impression of the ship wasn't good. It looked pretty unkempt . We were on deck 7 and the smell of sewage and fuel oil was overwhelming . I made a comment to one off the crew and we were told " It's an old ship " and that this was it's last trip before a refit. The smell got worse over the next 4 days particularly when the Captain made a decision to sail with a force 11 predicted!! We had 7/8 metre waves and hurricane force winds. This was a full day at sea. The opinion if the guests was that we shouldn't have sailed. The smell after was REVOLTING. It made your eyes sting and you held your breath until you got away from the stairwell. The food was bland and pretty much the same every day. The trouble was seating. There simply wasnt enough seats and tables to cater for everybody. We had to sit on the window sills on two occasions!! They were constantly running out of cutlery and crockery. Mugs were at a premium. The room staff were SUPERB, as were the waiters, but other bar staff had a couldn't care less attitude. We were served the wrong drinks numerous times and had our cards swapped on 3 occasions. The shows were, well what do I say?. Queen tribute night summed it up. The backing ' band' were terrible. The 4 singers went from English to their native tounge if the couldn't remember the words. I didn't know if to laugh or cry! We walked out after the third song. Some people did say they enjoyed it to be fair. The comedian we saw had the oldest jokes you could think of. To make matters worse he tried to play the guitar! He couldn't keep up with the back music AND played out of time and time. The tours were good and we saw the Northern lights, which was the reason for the cruise. The tour guides were very helpful. We wouldn't sail again on the Meggelan. I know this was it's last trip and it showed, but it just lacked the things that make it a nice ship. Perhaps after a refit things might be different. But going on our experience, this was a outdated old smelly ship and had we known that, we wouldn't have booked it. Read Less

Overall - The food on this ship was shocking. Typically it was to a standard I wouldn’t accept if I was cooking at home. On the plus side, nobody I knew gained weight from eating on the cruise. Deserts were limited and when available, nothing to write home about! - The only drinks available were water, tea or coffee. Some juices were available with breakfast - Waiters at breakfast and lunch were of Indian extraction and had very poor command of English, leading to poor service. - The entertainment was very 'Carry On', as though people's taste hadn't progressed in 60 years. It was often offensive on many levels. - I tried lodging a complaint after the cruise but none of the e-mail addresses for communication were working. All my e-mails bounced back and the help line is only for pre-cruise communication. They only communicate with people before a cruise. - My mother is an active 82 and she had been looking forward to this cruise. There are few pleasures in life when you are senior but food is one of them. Breakfast My mother (who is 82 and has blurred vision and poor hearing) would attend breakfast sitting at the Kensington Restaurant. The canteen on deck 10 was too much busy for her. She is careful not to trip and fall. 1. The eggs when requested were typically served hard when boiled (with a black ring about the yoke) or the omelette included ingredients, such as peppers, not requested. 2. The porridge was closer to concrete than pre-soaked oats. My mother eats porridge regularly and is not convinced that the raw material was, in fact, oats. She believed it to be some type of gruel. On one occasion an attempt was made to ‘top’ the offering with canned fruit cocktail. 3. The fruit ‘compote’ offered was actually canned fruit cocktail. 4. None of the pastries offered in any restaurant were freshly baked. 5. Accessing fresh drinking water was an issue in the Kensington. Water had to be requested and then was served luke warm. I don’t drink tea or coffee. The reluctance to put a jug of water on the table at all meals was not appreciated. 6. Juice was removed from the ‘bistro’ after breakfast and so for all other meals, water was the only beverage available to me. Most of the staff in the Kensington restaurant during breakfast / lunch have poor little English. Explaining to them that when ‘fruit compote’ was ordered, the guest didn’t expect what arrived, was an unnecessary burden. Indeed attempting to explain a problem was often likely to yield no benefit and cause further frustration to everybody involved. Lunch Again, my mother sought to have lunch, as much as possible, in the Kensington. If the quality of the food on offer was not good enough for her to contemplate eating, she found herself hunting for a meal on deck 10. In general, the hot meals served in the ‘bistro’ were of canteen quality – over cooked, lacking in flavour, stodgy and closer to the kind of food served at a busy truck stop or in a good café frequented by builders. A number of times, because of entertainment and excursion commitments, my mother was unable to lunch in the Kensington and so attempted to lunch in the bistro. However, the only food offered when she attended late was pizza, not food she has ever chosen to eat before this trip. While younger people with a different digestive system might welcome pizza, it is not suitable for an older person, who needs to ingest as little processed food as possible. Based on the demographic make up of the ship, why is pizza offered as the only food to bridge the lunch / dinner gap? Surely it is for the convenience of the kitchen than the comfort of a group who mostly senior citizens. Even an omelette, while also part of the breakfast menu, would be a soft, nutritious and freshly prepared food. For a lady of almost 82 to find herself moving from restaurant to canteen, seeking food, when she has paid so much for the service, is unsatisfactory. On the day of the BBQ, I was looking forward to, what should have been a good meal for her mother. This was a pool side event on Deck 10. Unfortunately, because the management were busy ‘upselling cocktails’, many guests who had been off the ship on excursions, were unable to find seating to enjoy this meal. The chaos of people hunting for chairs and tables as well as the noise generated by the team tangoing with cocktail shakers, detracted from what should have been an enjoyable occasion. The meat and vegetables on this occasion were satisfactory. Some more dry madeira cakes with various flavours were also presented. Indeed, ladies who were experience bakers offered their opinions on why the fruit fell to the bottom in one of the deserts. Dinner On the third day of cruising, when the new group of British guests boarded, a manager inquired at our table (Waldorf, 31 on the first sitting) if we were satisfied with the food. This was the first full day for the British guests to be on board and there was a marked improvement on the food offered in the restaurants on that particular day. I explained to the manager that, while the food that particular evening was adequate, the quality, on the whole, was not satisfactory. I noted that the potatoes offered in the bistro were overcooked so that they were unrecognisable. Other Irish guests had also wondered about potatoes served in the bistro that day. While I thought they were just boiled to mush, many agreed they were from a box. The people at the table were introduced to a cook and he listened to our concerns. When I discussed the quality of the food with the cook at the outset, he asked what could be improven upon. Not having any professional cooking qualifications, I was not in a position to advise the gentleman. I encountered that cook during the trip, but was never in a position to agree that the quality had improven on the whole. Often cheese or a cream sauce was put onto an element of the meal, for no apparent reason. It was assumed by the guests that this was to disguise something. Occasionally items appeared on the dinner menu that caused comment and guests to dare each other – the most amusing being Marmite Soup Henry IV. There was also a salad that was described as ‘greens with potatoes, turnip and carrots’. Most of the deserts offered both in the bistro and in the restaurants were not made on board and were very industrial. Frequently we would see a cheesecake with a pastry base or a variety of very dry madeira-based cakes (with pieces of quince and various other additions, in an effort to create flavour). Brownies were served in the bistro on the day when the British guests boarded and were never seen again. Toward the end of the trip ‘Chocolate afternoon tea’ was provided in the bistro. It appeared that the deserts missing throughout the trip had materialized in one fell swoop. Pretty looking deserts could be purchased in the coffee-shop next to ‘Sinatra Bar’ on deck 9 throughout the trip. However, I believed that we had paid for the food and were not about to pay more. Indeed, I learned that people who did pay more for the ‘surf and turf’ dinner, did not receive a satisfactory meal either. On the last night of the cruise, a ‘feast’ was held at 11 pm. Guests were invited to photograph this, including the ice sculptures and displays with company logo’s nearby. While the food was pleasant, it seems a poor idea to offer such a meal to people, mostly in advance years, at that time of night. Certainly, some elements of the ‘feast’ including the salmon and chocolate cakes could have been served earlier in the day to facilitate the guests. The infrequent presentation of food of an adequate quality demonstrated that the staff could perform but less for the benefit of the guests and more to make an impression worthy of photographs. It appears to me that strange menu choices, coupled with poor ingredients and limited skill resulted in the low-quality food offered on the Magellan. Strong flavours were routinely used rather than light subtle, natural flavours of the food. Occasionally effort would be expended to create a ‘display’ (such as the chocolate tea, Feast or the BBQ) but these served to highlight the poor quality of food offered on the other occasions. When discussing the food with guests, many people, including our clients, agreed that they could and did, cook better at home themselves. For many people food can be a pleasure but during this cruise, no meal was enjoyed to any degree because of the food served. It was nutrition with without the pleasure that food can bring. No meal included anything new or inventive. There was no culinary excitement but apprehension before each meal. There was no place on the comment card, provided at the end of the journey to outline issues with food, specifically and in details. The politeness and competence of the hotel management and captain were queried, in detail. It must be noted that hygiene on the ship was to a very high standard. However, poor nutrition can also leave an elderly person vulnerable to infection and this needs to be considered, particularly given the demographic of the ship. Read Less

Extremely disappointed in this cruise on two counts. I was woken every night by noise from the cabin next door. On two nights there were full blown parties in the cabin until 6.00 am. The passenger then slept in all day. I didn’t get one good night. After numerous complaints to staff I was told passengers are entitled to entertain in their cabins. There is no code of conduct to ensure sleep is possible between midnight and 6.00 am. This needs urgent attention. I keep to a gluten free diet and found making a dish gf meant taking things off the plate and not replacing. For afternoon tea there was one gf cake and it remained the same for five days. The food generally was of a lower standard than on other cruises. The evening meal is not five courses. If you order five only four arrive. Also disappointed the dress code was not observed. Come on men, make an effort. Breakfast is supposed to be free seating but I was told where to sit each morning and the staff grumbled if I chose to sit elsewhere. The crew were of very mixed nationalities and did not always support each other. On the positive side the theatre is lovely and the entertainment was enjoyable. The ship is attractive. The excursions were good. Port stays were very short so not enough time to see as much as I would have liked. As a solo traveller I felt I was always fighting my corner and did not feel pampered. Have travelled with Cruise & Maritime before - took advantage of 2 for 1 offer by booking early.. Lots of good points - Entertainment excellent., cabin steward Jaya brilliant & also Anna - Maria in Hampton Bar.. Most excursions also very very good Whole experience badly let down by food. We chose to eat in Grill as found times of restaurants either too early or too late. (Perhaps they need to consider "open dining" as on other lines). Food was often lukewarm to cold - main dishes dried out for sitting too long. Not often a jug/tureen of sauce offered so food very dry. Vegetables a disaster - mixed veg EVERY night & boiled potatoes 9 times out of 10. (& my husband hates sweetcorn !!). Hot dessert rotated between 3 or 4 choices. Staff did try very hard to correct individual problems ie heated our plates & added sauces. But shouldn't have been necessary. Other complaint was itinery. We knew it in advance but as we have only cruised 3times in past didn't appreciate how many days at sea there were. Too many & we didn't enjoy this aspect although, to be fair, spoke to others who did. Felt end of cruise was badly organised with 3hrs in Aarhus then 2 days at sea. Bad weather (no-ones fault) meant we only had very limited time in Cobh Read Less
