I sailed from Dundee, not Newcastle but the option to put that on the review wasn’t there! First cruise for me and I went alone. Boarding was quick, efficient and simple. Plenty of staff to show you the way to your cabin. I felt the whole trip (to the Norwegian fjords) was extremely good value for money. Excursions were well organised and informative. On board activities were fun and well attended. The restaurants were efficient, friendly staff and good food. The Chef’s Table was a superb evening. Book it if you get a chance. Cabin was clean and spacious and tended twice daily. If I had read some of the awful reviews before going I might have cancelled but I have absolutely no complaints. This isn’t a 5 star luxury miner so if you want that, go elsewhere. It is a small(ish) friendly ship which I really loved. I will sail with this company again. Read Less

We wanted a winter cruise to celebrate my 70th birthday. Having called into the co op travel agents in Lincoln ,this one was recommended to us by one of the cruise specialists.we couldn't have enjoyed it more! The staff on board were all amazing and friendly- nothing too much trouble. I was ill a couple of days into the trip and needed to use the ships medical department. The treatment I got was first class and with a couple of days intensive treatment I was fit to enjoy the rest of the cruise. Food on board was delicious and plentiful and was presented in the first class restaurants as if in a top class hotel. There was a less formal restaurant but the food was excellent in there too. Entertainment was first class with terrific shows each night as well as many and varied day time activities. There was also a wide range on shore excursions ( not cheap as Norway is expensive) and we took advantage of a few of them which we thoroughly enjoyed. We made some good friends who we hope to cruise with again in the future with this line. Now, try as I might, I can't think of any negatives. There was an incident of burst pipes which I believe caused flooding to some areas but the staff worked so hard to sort the problem and did so quickly. I did overhear some guests complaining about various things but they all sounded quite trivial to me. I do feel that some folks complain for complaining X sake!! However, everyone is of course entitled to their opinion. We certainly enjoyed ourselves and would highly recommend cruise and maritime and the Magellan to anyone. Many thanks for a memorable trip. I was actually on the Baltic cruise 10/8/17 but for some reason cant choose that date. Very few cruise lines offer single cabins at a reasonable cost (+25%) or sail from Northern Ports (I live in Scotland) - CMV offered both along with get together events throughout the cruise for single travellers. On other ships I have felt marginalised by the guests being mainly couples and often quite lonely - not the case at all on Magellan. The cabin (on deck 6) was of a good size with twin beds/king size bed (when put together). Lots of storage space and a good sized shower room. No kettles though which meant a trail up to the free hot water machine on Deck 10... only on the last few days did I discover you could have a jug of hot water delivered at no charge. The air con was noisy but otherwise a quiet cabin - those on lower decks tended to be noisy. The food was excellent and the Kitchen catered for my food allergy brilliantly. The food was not 'luxury' grade but for just over 2,000 for a 14 night cruise i didnt expect that. I was on the very early 5:30 sitting and did feel the miss of, unlike other cruise lines, no late evening buffet otherwise all OK. The entertainment was poor compared with other cruises, the singers good individually but whoever booked them could not have envisaged them singing together as whenever they did their voices just did not compliment each other. The acoustics in some of the bars was poor and made the classical musicians sound tinny - they were much better when in the main show lounge. Craft and other activities were plentiful and of a good standard - i enjoyed some writing and watercolours classes. I did think the port presentations were really dumbed down - if you want to know more I suggest you get a guide book or research in advance. Embarkation great - staff attitude very friendly/good service all very good EXCEPT the tours desk - beware they know nothing about the (over expensive) tours they are selling- I am disabled and needed to check accessibility and ended up on free port wifi doing it myself! Emailing museums etc. Magellan gives an authentic small ship - old style cruising experience with libraries and sun decks instead of wave pools and climbing walls - I liked it so much Im going again next year BUT Im going to book my own port tours! Chose the Cruise because I could board at Liverpool. I was very disappointed with the poor choice of food in Raffles buffet at breakfast and lunchtime. It was very difficult to find a seat to eat a meal since it is so small and this was a particular problem on sea days. Lots of staff on Reception but most appeared poorly trained and they constantly had to find more experienced staff to consult. Overall, there appeared to be a total lack of communication between staff in all departments. When problems arose, few of them were willing to help solve them. The problem always remained with the customer to sort out. II thought the theatre entertainment was good and Dana was a brilliant revelation. The remaining organised activities during the day were poor. Trying to find seats in the bars and lounges in the evening was difficult because there were too many passengers for the limited facilities of the ship. Read Less

A ship not fit for travel especially on such a long cruise. I have disembarked early in Malta. After a disasterous first month it did not really get any better. It became a ferry for bargain hunters to fill cabins. From the Magellan cough ,llness to broken AC systems that left guests sleeping on open decks, and water poring throughdecks it was the Companys treatment of passaners that made it worse.. What should have been a trip of a lifetime had become quite the opposite. I was not alone. Over 200 passengers met and voiced their complaints on board. Entetainment and the cruise director are a shadow of what to expect on even a three star ship. Just the cabin was of passable quality. Oters ad floods and fumes and moved many times. The food was of a good quality until the chef left for another vessel. The poor layout of decks means there are no comfy seating areas or places to dine alfresco. The Eros bar area is poor and totaly unaceptable in this day and age. Managemnet on board is non existant when problems arise, like water in rooms, to fumes in the AC sysyem.... problems were endless. A gastro illness was last straw for me. Read Less

Cruise and Maritime. MV Magellan, round the world maiden cruise, 120 nights. Sailed from Tilbury UK. I joined the Magellan, on the 5th of January 2017. I have previoulsy sailed with Holland America, and Voyages of Discovery. I Picked this one as it was my 65th year. I made many friends, I particulary enjoyed the Restarant Open seating dining at breakfast and lunchtime. In the evening a seating plan was in use. The Bistro deck also had a Buffet style arrangement. Guest Relation's put on events for single travellers which was good for me, also other social events were staged, e.g. Quiz,Dance, and Bridge sessions to name a few. A range of guest lecturers kept us entertained on a range of subjects appertaing to our cruise itinery. a Full range of excursions as you would expect, reasonably priced in my oppionion. I enjoyed the trip so much iam going on CMV MV Columbus in january. This time around I aim to undertake more ship board life. Standards were genearlly good, if you are a top of the range traveller, this style would not be for you. However it was exceptional value for your pound. Read Less

The entertainment was the worst by far we have seen over the years with cmv seeming to love ex Britain's got talent losers or lookalikes their main offering which is not what you expect. The shops were ok but the staffs attitude and service were very poor. In summary, every thing was average..except dining experience. Read Less

I chose this cruise as it visited some great cities: Copenhagen, Warnemunde, Tallin, St Petersburg, Helsinki and Stockholm, I booked through Solos holidays so I would have other solo travellers to have dinner with. From the moment I arrived at Tilbury I knew it was a mistake. The waiting room to board was like God's waiting room - full of the old and infirm. I was asked twice within 30 secs of boarding by crew if I was 'alone' - thanks for reminding me. Cabin was very out of date, in dire need of a refurb. I paid £468 extra for an outside cabin (window, no balcony) and then found out 2 people in the Solos group had been given outside cabins without paying the extra. Daily programme (4 days at sea so you need some activities): they were the activities my grandma did in her old people's home : making a card, making a needle case, chair aerobics, line dancing, bingo. Plus: I could run up and down the stairs with no obstruction - all old people queuing for lifts. Food at dinner was nice, breakfast and lunch were average and a scrum to get a seat/ elbow the fatties out of the way. Drinks package is good value. On sea days when the sun came out it was impossible to get a seat in the sheltered area, full of ancients asleep with their mouths hanging open. It's a shame, although the destinations were great, the experience on the ship left me v disappointed with this holiday (and it cost me £2k plus so was not cheap). Read Less

Chose this cruise as I had always wanted to visit St Petersburg. Magellan, despite her age is in fair condition and my inside single cabin was comfortable and clean, indeed the cabin steward did an excellent job whilst remaining unobtrusive. Food on board was just about what I expected for the price paid. The buffet breakfast remained unvaried throughout and there was enough choice to satisfy everyone. Lunch, I stuck to the 'buffet' , again provided plenty of choice and quality was average. Dinner, table service often slow but good variety and the quality slightly better than breakfast or lunch. Entertainment was average and if you were on second sitting for dinner, involved you going to the early show which lasted 45 mins and then you rushed straight to your table. I found the crew friendly, attentive and eager to please. Drinks, were of average quality and price and if you are an average drinker I would recommend taking the 'Drinks package' which at £17 per day is very good value. The overall standard of cleanliness and hygiene on board was very high. Excursions, though not cheap were well organised and overall value for money. Overall, I enjoyed the whole experience and would consider cruising with Cruise & Maritime again. Read Less

First time cruising as a single traveller. I am a very experienced single traveller both business and pleasure. Embarkation and disembarkation all very well organised. Cabin (inner) clean and tidy - well looked after during voyage. Dining - lots of choice - something for everyone. Service - staff professional and polite. But not for the inexperienced single traveller - meals - not sat with other single traveller just couples. First meet up was organised when at second sitting dinner, second meeting - just wanted our names for an end of cruise lunch (?), turned up to two meeting points for going on your own excursions - no one there (gave in)! Turned up for the end of cruise lunch - and was sat with one woman who has come with her family. Though everyone was friendly on board and quite often you would sit at breakfast or lunch and someone would talk to you. Would I do a cruise again? Yes but not with this company. Basics required set aside tables at breakfast and dinner for single travellers. Pre dinner drinks meet up point at both sittings for dinner. Read Less

Cruise to Iceland on Magellan. As usual really enjoyed it and met some very nice people on board. Sadly there were the usual moaners, mostly about the food. If I have any criticism personally, it might have been slightly over salted for some people's tastes, but I found it just perfect. My cabin was large and roomy, best showers of any ship I have been on and I have been on quite a few. All kept spotless by lovely cheery staff smiling and chatting even though they seem to do very long shifts. The weather was very rough but you don't go to Iceland for 30 degree heat and a suntan. Although some passengers never cease to amaze me as one woman thought she could be out on deck sunning herself and the brochure was misleading showing blue skies! The lectures were very good being varied and entitled living on Scottish Lighthouses, Van Gogh Sunflowers and The Aurora Borialis, saw a great film as well - Bridge of Spies. The scenery was spectacular and unfortunately a bad trip for quite a few passengers who were airlifted off the ship and ambulances waiting at quayside to take them to Hospital, however this was quite thrilling to watch for the rest of us and I hope all are well on the road to recovery by now. Going back to other reviewers moaning about the food, I'd like to know what they eat at home or in UK restaurants. There was always a choice of 4 to 5 starters, two soups, two salads, 4 to 5 main courses, 3 to 4 desserts, cheese and biscuits and coffee or tea to finish. The soups may have been on the thin side, however if you can manage 5 courses stating with a hearty lentil and bacon, then you are doing well. Choices included venison, halibut, lemon sole, ginger chicken, the pistachio ice cream was fabulous. Bear in mind this is a very reasonably priced cruise, you can't expect the same as Crystal or Seaborne. Go with that in mind and you will have a great time. Read Less

First cruise ever, so we were a little apprehensive. But as the Magellan ship is a small/medium size it is a good choice for a first cruise. Embarking at Newcastle was great and very easy. The steward met us and showed us our free upgrade room from the 4th deck to the 7th. We were surprised how big the cabin looked, and the bathroom & shower were bigger than we had hoped for.there was shampoo & shower gel dispenser in the shower and little bars of soap on the sink. The room had a big picture window was made the room very light and airy. Plenty of wardrobe space & the TV had bbc,itv etc. We didn't take the drinks package at £17 per person but plenty did and many said they had got there money's worth. But drinks are not expensive on board so we just paid as we went along. The food was a bit of hit & miss but overall the Raffles Bistro faired better than the restaurants for food. If you eat in the restaurants you get free coffe, tea & water. The shows on board were ok, although to be fair we didn't bother much with them. All the staff are just so lovely, nothing was too much trouble. You do pay £5 per day for tips which will be added to your bill at the end of the cruise. I read some reviews that said take your own water bottle, but there is a big sign on the water dispenser that tells you not to, so we didn't as it makes perfect sense health wise. Staff offer you antibacterial gel for your hands at every restaurant which again is a thing you must do to protect not only yourself but the other passengers. My disembarkation was a mess, as I hold a USA passport they make you walk to the bus them onto the terminal to go through immigration and as it was snowing very heavily I got soaked and had to return to the ship to disembark an hour later. No staff told me this otherwise I wouldn't have packed my jacket! Don't bother paying for the wifi, it's just rubbish and not worth the money as it ties so long to get onto it, even to just check emails is just so frustrating. If you want a leisurely cruise without all the nonsense of the big mega ships try this ship. Read Less

I have read some of the reviews and I wonder if the reviewers travelled on the same ship as myself. This was an excellent cruise visiting some interesting ports. I am not a hardened cruiser and possibly this is the last cruise that I will take simply because I have visited most of the places accessible by cruise ships that I want to visit. I prefer Adventure Travel. The comments about the list of the ship were correct but never of any problem and if you cross the North Atlantic in mid-Winter then you must expect rough weather and the ship responded accordingly. We did have a severe turn in the Amazon which resulted in the breaking of plates and having spoken to a retired Naval Officer who was a passenger, he said that this could well have been caused by a sudden change of direction and it should be remembered that the ship was under the control of the Brazilian Pilots at that time. I did not participate in the Bequia excursion but I agree with the complaints on the beach transfer excursion. I walked to the beach in fifteen minutes. The excursions I undertook were good and I had no complaints and the Amazonian Experience was excellent. There was several tendering ports and the crew had some difficult sea conditions particularly at Isle d'Salut and they dealt with these admirably and I wrote a letter to the Cruise Director asking him to give the crews my thanks for their good work in difficult circumstances. I refused to use the lifts so cannot make any comment except to say that many of the lift users should have tried the stairs and had some exercise. Evening entertainment was good with some exceptions and the films shown were a contrast. The Entertainment Team were hard working and were often seen on other duties. The best cabin that I have had on a cruise ship with an excellent steward Min who is now taking a well earned holiday home in Myanmar. Read Less

I sometime wonder if the reviewers had been on the same ship as myself because I found this cruise to be very enjoyable and took me to those places that I had wished to visit in the past and the programme of visits was perfect. The ship is old and well travelled but one passenger was overheard in saying that they had never travelled on such a clean ship. The crew were constantly cleaning and the use of hand sanitisers was required whenever you entered the restaurants. My cabin 6087 was the largest I had ever had and was kept spotlessly clean by Kway Min OO who is now having a well earned holiday in Myanmar. The Cabin was well appointed. Check-in was straightforward following an easy twenty minute walk from Tilbury Town Station and was ahead of schedule in spite of the ship arriving in Tilbury later than planned. I only cruise to see places that I wish to travel to so am not a hardened cruiser and this cruise took me one thousand miles up the Amazon to Manaus which is a fascinating city although as some passengers found to their cost, it has a violent undertone. The excursion that I took from Manaus, Amazonian Experience was excellent and I had no complaints on any of the excursions although I fully appreciate the annoyance of those who did the beach transfer on Bequia to a beach just fifteen minutes walk from the landing stage. The crew were excellent although I did have some reservations about the attitude of the waiters. The tender crews had some difficult work to do at times and they should be complimented for their work on Isle d' Salut where there was a heavy swell but they ensured that all passengers who wished to go ashore did so in as great a comfort as was possible. One reviewer has commented about the sudden violent vibration when we were travelling up the Amazon and has said that it must have been caused by the ship hitting a sandbank and dismissing the Cruise Director's comment that it was caused by a sudden change of course. I spoke to a retired Naval Officer just after this incident and he had said that the incident could well have been caused by a sudden change of course and it should be remembered that the ship was under the control of the Brazilian Pilots at that time. Overall, this was an excellent trip and as one reviewer has said too many passengers want Cunard standards at CMV prices. Read Less

The operations manager didn't want to listen to complaints and take emergency action but was rude. The terminal manager was great .He was frustrated with the operations manager's inaction. He provided water and coffee. We had to pay. The food on board was tepid.Vegetarian food at dinner was terrible. I have received a letter to day from management .It was defensive and not prepared to learn. I listed a no. of problems. The only way they will learn if people stop using this Ship. I would never recommend CMV . My cabin steward was excellent and the staff in the wellness centre were wonderful and on the whole efficient. The dining room staff were in need of training. This was my second time on Magellan and I had a wonderful holiday. It was relaxing and the itinerary and weather were fantastic. Very good value for money. A special mention to all the staff on Magellan who are friendly and very hard working, they certainly go the extra mile. The food I found was very good indeed. Some people complained about the size of the portions but with five courses for dinner, how much food do you want? I am a large person with a big appetite and was more than satisfied with the variety and amount of delicious treats. The soup was especially mention worthy. First time I had lemon soup. Very refreshing. The only reason my review does not give five stars are the lack of seating and size of some of the public spaces. The library is too small and the show lounge seems to have too many pillars and Perspex screens for a decent view of the stage. As the weather was very good a lot of people were on deck but I'm not sure if I could go on a cold weather cruise on Magellan. The casino which was barely ever used could be changed to more seating I think. My cabin was great. Shower best on any ship. Great supply of hot water with really good force. Read Less

I sailed on the Magellan from Tilbury on 4th June for a short cruise to Amsterdam and Antwerp. I am a nervous driver so impressed at the ease of driving to port from my home in Rugby (M1,M25, short bit of A13, short bit of dual carriageway and then ship is in front of you - easy peasy! Dropped suitcase off shipside and then told I needed to drive about a mile back inland to park car in Tilbury Container Port. Friendly staff at car park (very secure) and soon on shuttle bus back to ship. Sailing time was 1600 - so impressed to have a boarding time of 1215 - in time for an included lunch - best calamari I've ever had. I love London Cruise Terminal - red brick building with stained glass windows - you half expect a film crew to be there filming an episode of Poirot set in the 1930s! Left Tilbury in gorgeous sunshine after a very thorough and reassuring lifeboat drill. Pleasant enough first evening meal in restaurant on first sitting. Average first night show in main 'theatre'. As other reviews have stated, slightly restricted viewing from pillars and perspex if you sit upstairs! Had very noisy night in cabin for first night - no idea why! Was fine for next two nights! Nice choice of breakfast as we turned round in Amsterdam - dedicated egg station is always good! Efficient disembarkation and enjoyable stay in the city - ship docks centrally! Have been there twice before on cruises so have done canal trips and zoo in the past. This time I opted to visit the Maritime Museum - excellent and easy walk from cruise terminal. One tip - Nemo is nearby - is free to climb to the roof garden for great panoramic views! Another tip - Dutch customs & immigration give you the full scale X-Ray, belts off etc departure experience. Don't expect to nip back on ship for a quick (included) meal and then back onshore - because you'll have to go through the whole rigmarole all over again! Show on second night was "Music from the Movies". Was really enjoyable. Much happier with my cabin (6002) for subsequent nights - a twin reserved for single use at a good price - and no further noise! Ship couldn't have docked any more centrally in Antwerp - short stroll to the cathedral and other historic sights. Saddened to see some very negative comments posted online about this particular cruise. This cruise had some problems with toilets on certain decks. CMV gave affected passengers a generous on-board credit. In summary: 1) Great parking (once I found it!). Friendly staff and brand new Ensign bus ready to take me to the ship via fascinating tour of Tilbury Port. 2) Loved the opportunity to board early at 1215 for a 1600 departure - time for an included lunch - and the calamari was the best I've ever had! 3) Efficient and friendly boarding, Done by Entertainment Staff as per my previous Marco Polo experience. 4) Nice historic terminal - loved the stained glass windows 5) Generously sized twin cabin for solo use 6) The "Music from the Movies" show on second night was excellent. 7) Cabin kept immaculate by Olena, my cabin stewardess - never had my pyjamas folded so neatly! 8) Friendly table drinks service from Toma Andriana in Hampton's Bar. 7) Mega-efficient disembarkation - ship cleared by customs and immigration at 0708 and I was back in my car by 0730 - brilliant! And home in Rugby (108 miles away) two hours later after painless journey on empty A13/M25/M1! I had a great cruise and passed on my comments (some positive, some negative) to CMV Customer Services directly rather than having a public rant on the internet (like this site) first. Was nice to get a written reply to my concerns. Have no hesitation in booking again! Read Less

As the eternal optimist, there were so many negative reviews about Magellan, that even I was getting downhearted. As usual I should have trusted my own instincts. I cruised on Discovery last summer enjoying it thoroughly, so booked Magellan when it came online. Boarding at Dundee, I arrived at the appointed time and was on the boat in less than 10 minutes. My cabin was huge, nice big shower with piping hot water and comfy bed. The only niggle with my cabin was (and I think all ships are the same) the hair dryer was rubbish and the plug slightly too far from the mirror, so there were some contortions going on. Food - I was pleasantly surprised, much better than I expected for the very reasonable price, and seemed to get even better towards the end of the week, but I quickly learned to eat in the main dining rooms as the Raffles Buffet was a complete free for all and rarely could you get a seat in it. The ship has an unusual layout with the galley in the middle meaning that you sometimes had to go up a floor and down a floor to get to where you wish, but you are on holiday, how quickly to you need to get anywhere? Cabaret is not my thing, I have never enjoyed it. Friends dragged me to the ABBA night, but as ever I just find it really cheesy - the quizzes were quite fun, the speaker good and I went on some great excursions. Richard did some Victoria Wood Songs and that was fantastic - laughed till I cried. The weather was good and scenery fabulous. I think cruise and maritime are still feeling their way with this new to them ship, at times there seemed to be a lot of staff hanging about doing nothing, then at the busy times,in the bars before meals - one or two people would be going like the clappers, perhaps they will sort out some of the niggles as she is now in dry dock for 45 days - I am back on board in August sailing to the Baltic, will report again then.
