We have become rather unhappy with Crystal Cruises for a variety of reasons so we have been searching for their replacement. SilverSea's greatest advantage over Crystal would be in the size of their all-suite accommodations. We found our suite to be impeccably clean, well maintained, stylish, and equipped with a wonderfully cheerful and helpful butler. The weakest element in a comparison to Crystal is the entertainment. It is constrained by the physical size & layout of the stage. The shows were rather lackluster so we spent our free evenings enjoying the pianist (Alex) and guitarist/singer (Angela) in the Dolce Vita lounge. While food quality is generally very good to excellent, we had service issues at two venues. At the poolside Grill, it was very obvious that the staff was more concerned with closing on time than in taking care of guests, even though we were seated 45 mins ahead of closing. The main dining room, Atlantide, was our biggest disappointment for dinner. It took more than two hours for our party of four to be served, and one of the two veal entrees was undercooked. Going forward, Atlantide was relegated to breakfast or lunch only. Our favorite dining venue quickly became IndoChine once I tasted their Short Ribs. My wife loved the Pho soup so much that she had it for the three days consecutive days. I found it amusing that the Asian restaurant's Osso Buco was, IMO, superior to that of the Italian La Terrazza. We found La Terrazza best for lunch due to its large buffet offering. La Dame was simply exquisite on every level. Well worth the extra charge. The same applies equally to Seishin Restaurant, who provided a perfect Creme Brulee. The other highlight not to be missed is their Spider Crab appetizer. The greatest hidden treasure we discovered has to be the Arts Cafe. The food is art for both the eyes and the palate. Change the name to Arts & Eats!! Compared to dining on Crystal, SilverSea is close, but not the clear winner. Efficiency: SilverSea could benefit from an efficiency consultant. As an example, ship ID cards should have been designed for machine scanning/contact scanning without having to remove them from the SilverSea card case. Summary: this jury is still out on declaring the winner. We are hoping that our next SilverSea cruise (Muse Feb 2019) will settle the argument. Read Less

Everything from start to finish was a wonderful experience. This 12 day cruise from Lisbon to Greenwich terrific. The ship was small and Intimate just over 600 passengers and elegantly decorated. Just the perfect size so that we felt pampered. The ship size allowed it to cruise down the Gironde right into Bordeaux and down the Thames into Greenwich. The Classic Veranda Suite was large and had a living/sitting area with a veranda deck. The bathroom had a separate stall shower and a separate tub. There was a spacious walk in closet with a dresser as well as drawers in the living area. The service from our attentive butler, housekeeper, reception desk, waiters and customer service rep was impeccable. The excursion guides were certified, knowledgeable and sometimes historians. They were always good humored and extremely personable. Restaurant food was very good and service was excellent. However, the menus could have been changed for a bit of variation during the cruise. This cruise line did a fantastic job. Read Less

After 3 consecutive cruises on Regent, I was recommended Silversea because it was good and very smoking friendly. It really is very smoking friendly. The booking was a breeze with Mr Andrew Ironstone making my life easy. Best ever. The ship is OK, I especially like the architecture having all the cabins in the front and venues in the back of the ship. It is very smart and makes the cabins very quiet. It was the quietest cabin I ever had in a cruise. The cabin was OK with good size and a nice bathroom. Nothing special. The butler service was poor. The entertainment was very limited. The bar staff was great but you could not find the beverages you like in all bars. Some had a very limited selections. The thing I liked the most were the napkins. They come in a roll like toilet paper but the texture is like linen and they are indestructible, very impressing and nice. The food was disgusting, a great deception after cruising with Regent which has great food. We tried the two Asian restaurants and it was really disgusting. The main restaurant has the same menu every night and the food is average, no fixed menu on the left and new dishes on the right of the menu every night, always the same food. We talked to our new cruise friends who tried other options and they told us it was the same bad quality, not worth the effort or the money. Breakfast had a reasonable selection but the service was horrible. It was like watching the 3 stooges. Lots of waiters running in every direction but none stopping to ask me what I wanted to drink. There is an option called Arts Cafe but the ice machine was broken, or that is the excuse and to get a glass of water can take up to 15 minutes. The best thing on breakfast are hand washing machines which are really cool. Lunch is the worst ever. The restaurant closes at 13:30 and you are left with the pool bar which serves horrible food. The hot dog which I thought was a safe option, takes like 30 minutes and is terrible. You can always order pizza which is faster than the hot dog. Are we paying 2000 a night to eat junk food? The dress code is very strict. Some old people wanted to use the smoking they bought for their granddaughter wedding. They had 2 formal nights, 2 casual nights and the rest was informal which is formal without a tie. If you don't follow, "No food for you tonight". It was really disgusting seeing a handicapped man wearing a vest, being sent back to get a jacket in order to be fed. Most of the ports were excellent and we had lunch on shore which satisfied our needs and left us ready for a light fare for diner. Average great lunch on the ports of $150 / person. There were no sea days but some ports had all aboard at 11:30 am or 13:30 pm which left no time for lunch putting us to the punishment of having lunch on board. The best part about the food was that being so bad, we did not gain any weight at all. Final question: would I go back? I don't want to close the door and if they had a great itinerary like the one we cruised, maybe. Read Less

We chose the cruise for its itinerary. Unfortunately, the "Bordeaux" stop was at an abandoned container dock 100 km from Bordeaux, so not having purchased a costly all-day shore excursion, we didn't see Bordeaux, so that was disappointing. The rest of the itinerary was as stated, and we enjoyed the ports immensely. Eleven days without a sea day made for a very busy cruise. Service was generally very good to excellent, except the day of embarkation, we didn't see the butler until I finally called him 9 hours after boarding. So much for Silversea's advertisement of a butler for each suite who will help you unpack. Food and wine quality and restaurants were very good to excellent. We got to go to market with the chef at two ports, that evening the local products the chef purchased were served on the pool deck. It was a great way to experience local flavors. The first few days of the cruise we had record heat, then the weather became chilly as we sailed farther north, a welcome change. Free wifi was only available one hour each day, and purchasing wifi was quite expensive, so we only had a short amount of time to check our email for contact with friends and family online. But that's ok, it left more time to enjoy the cruise.which we did, very much. Read Less

Friends had traveled with Silversea and we knew of its good reputation. What attracted us, though, was a wonderful Lisbon-Rouen itinerary. We do not plan to return to Silversea due to spotty service. Examples: A change in Lisbon port was not communicated to passengers, who had to "dash" by taxi from the north port to the south port, without a prompt written apology or the gesture of a shipboard credit. There were logistical snafus at other times, especially at disembarkation, and some of the tours were in larger groups than we typically experience on luxury lines. In the food realm, it could be good or poor. One evening at La Terrazza, our party of four was seated at 7:30 pm, received main courses after 9 pm, and our dessert order had not been taken at 10:30 pm. Another evening, I received the wrong entree. At a lunch, I got my salad but my husband did not get his. In our experience, the service does not compare to Regent, SeaDeam Yacht Club, Windstar, or Azamara. (Our butler and steward were, however, wonderful.) It wasn't all bad: We met some wonderful people and enjoyed the ports. But while the Italian line touts its “comfortable, warm and welcoming environment,” we think Silversea consistently delivered on just one out of three: The ship and cabin are well-appointed and comfortable. Beware: Silversea automatically includes an eleven-euro charge per person for the family charity, Maruzza. If you don’t notice or don’t take the time to complain on disembarkation day, you make an unauthorized “gift.” This is not the sign of a customer-centric line. Read Less

I did not like paying for all my excursions off the ship. Being charged additional for 2 of the 4 restaurants on board was very petty. I felt after saying all food was included was a lie. The food was excellent and so was the service. The pool was closed 2 days do to filter issues and the excersiize facility was too small. Two of the 4 machines were out of order! Not very appealing for a choice for a second cruise! I felt I was overcharged and underdelivered on my cruise package!!! I am a Colonel in a Bourbon Society in SC and the 2 Bourbon selection Jim Beam and Makers Mark were very poor A 2 star Bourbon for a 5 star cruise! You need Blantons and Woodford Reserve at a minimum! Wake up and smell the roses....we did meet 2 nice couples on board and the Artwork was excellent. You did not offer photos as a souvenir or an art show or auction.. Read Less

We were given the incorrect embarkation dock. I had to call my American Express agent in Canada (from Lisbon) for her to call the company in Fort Lauderdale to find out where the driver should take us. Our cabin stunk of cigarette smoke. We asked to be moved. They could not accommodate us. On the day of disembarkation we were put on a 5:30am transfer to CDG. Our flights were 1:15pm and 8:10pm respectively. We asked to be put on a later transfer. Reception said that the 8:30am bus was full and that they could not accommodate us. We asked if they could arrange a taxi. Reception said that they could not. We left the ship at 8:00am with the hope of getting a taxi. Seeing that the 8:30am bus was still there I asked ground crew if there was space. There was and we took the bus to CDG. I noted that there were 16-empty seats. I wish to add that I have more than 300-days with Silversea, I have sailed with Seabourn, Regent, and Crystal. Read Less

Chose this cruise because of the ports and the emphasis on Champagne . Every thing connected with that part of the trip was excellent. didn't like the fact of sooo many tender dockings and did not like where the shipswere docked when we did go to a port. They were far from the destinations. There were shuttle buses to take us to towns and that was great if you didn't go on ships tours. Oyster tasting excursion was excellent. Didn't do any other shore trips because they were frightfully expensive. Trip from Rouen to Paris airport was another long bus ride. AIrport service was excellent. Attendant at airport was very accommodating. Dining room service was excellent and so were cabin attendants. Every one went overboard to make sure you were pleased except for the reception desk. They were inexperience .One said this was her first ttime. Cruise director was very attentive and tried so hard to be helpful when something wasn't running smoothly. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it had an excellent itinerary of small ports along the coasts of Portugal, Spain, and France. Most other cruise lines only make one or two stops along these coasts. Also we had had an excellent experience with Silversea in Alaska so we expected the same this time. Not so. Our primary problem was being given an inexperienced butler which we didn't understand until half was through the cruise so when she didn't answer her pages or was extremely slow we assumed that Silversea had cut down on their service. The second problem was that dinner service was not available in any dining room before 7PM, and they have no dinner buffet or option for casual dining. Since the service in the dining room was extremely slow, it was impossible to finish eating early enough to get enough sleep before going on tour. They really seem to think that having their "guests" wear tuxedos is more important than meeting the needs of their passengers. The cabins are fine. We couldn't go to any entertainment. It was too late for us. The tours were good. I recommend the itinerary on another cruise line that isn't so impressed with itself. Read Less

This cruise went to places that we had never visited before. Having Silverseas handle all the transportion made for a more relaxing trip. Our Cruise Director, Moss was one of the best we've had in over a dozen cruises. Our only dissappointment was the limited number of speakers and other onboard activities which we were told was becasue there were not sea days. Still think there should be more as we do not go ashore or take shore excursions ever day. The shore excursions we did take were very good for the most part. There was only one that disappointed us. The fitness center could use some upgraded equipment and a little more room. There was also too few machines for the number of people onboard so you either have to wait or come back another time. Our butler was very good and went out of her way to address any of our concerns. Read Less
