We have just returned from a fabulous 7 days. The whole thing was fabulous. A clean and lovely ship. The staff are excellent can’t do enough for you. Cheerful friendly and helpful. Our room was well looked after cleaned everyday. Top ups for tea coffee milk etc. Our cabin was a balcony deluxe and it lived up to its name.Chocolates on your pillows. Always an animal towel in your bed lol.The entertainment was professional and great to watch.A different show each night. We had waiter service in the bars for our wide selection of cocktails.Irish cream coffees Baileys etc. The food was great .A good selection and always hot. Salads were tasty and tempting. Breakfast has a wide variety of things From English breakfast to continental. Omelettes were delicious. The trips were long days but we made lots of memories. Just need extra stops on the Rome walking tour. We packed a lot in a week but was a great holiday. Can’t wait to go cruising again with TUI. Thanks to everyone. Read Less

The flights and logistics We had a delayed departure from Gatwick 20mins nevertheless after a comfortable flight we were safely in Palma. The process of getting from baggage claim to the coach was not great as it was raining (like I've never seen rain like it before) On arrival at the port our cases were ferried from the coach (A little Wet) and we picked up our boarding cards for cabin 9176 and within 20 minutes we were on board and exploring. First impressions There is not the wow factor of Indy with the multi storey atrium but they have managed to get a lot in the ship. Areas that felt a little small to start with then we noticed how much more room you have per person we had, but the ship is in lovely condition albeit there are perhaps a few blemishes but we were more than happy. Our cabin We were in cabin 9176 which is a standard balcony. It was immaculately presented and quite spacious. where I was only allowed 3 drawers, a shelf and two hangers we reached a more equitable distribution and all our 40kg of luggage had a home. The cases fit under the bed if you lift the frame to get them past the lip. Our cabin steward Roberto was a handsome young chap and very polite and thorough. We were very content. The bars/drink We decided not to get the premium Ai package. The house red was very pleasant as were the other wine options we tried. In terms of everything else the Ai suited us as it does contain main brands and we are not fussy over whether the gin is Gordon's or Tanqueray . It has much the same effect after sufficient numbers. Of the bars we tried squid and anchor, the lounge, indigo bar and the pool bar. We really liked the lounge and also indigo was a good spot for a drink before the club started as it was quieter and had some of the best views on the ship and a thank you to Imer,Rita and Anna for great service. Places to eat/food For breakfast we tended to eat at the market place. The choice was plentiful and most days I managed to resist the temptations of the fried bread. Most days. There are good options jn terms of cereals, fruit, cooked and continental options. We had no issues in getting a table at any time. Lunches we used both the market place and the Mediterranean. The options in the market place were nice and fresh and had variety. In the med I had the bespoke pasta option. Taste wise it was very nice indeed although perhaps a little oily. For our evening meals we generally ate in latitude 53, We never had a poor meal with highlights for me being the beef Wellington. Service wise it was excellent but we had some incredible service from Annette and Capella and they are an absolute credit to Marella Explorer . Entertainment All of the entertainment from the quizzes to the meditation classes were excellent and the show cast were all very talented and excellent individuals singing at the piano including Matt CD Read Less

We arrived at the ship after our flight from Leeds/Bradford first impressions were wow what a ship how large it was, suppose it had to be with around 1800 passengers, check in airport security style, got a plastic card which was key to cabin, card for drinks food etc, and boarding card, got to out cabin 9100 which was deck 9, reasonable size with a large balcony with chairs table and a hammock, beds were ok, Bottled water-small bottles of wine, biscuits on what we thought was a complimentary tray, later discovered all that was chargeable, at an exorbitant rate. This is where it all started to go wrong, we booked as "All inclusive", turns out not as all inclusive as you think. In the coffee pot lounge you were charged for coffee, several other places, bars and restuarants had a charge, and not cheap. So we set sail had our first nights meal in The Market Place, which was very basic cafeteria food, which was ok, self serve pumps of red/white wine and fosters lager, this was free. had a wander around the ship seemed quite well appointed, eventually went to bed around 11pm quite a tiring day... didnt sleep at all well as above the twin beds was the air conditioning unit very noisy all night slept badly, woke tired. complained to reception asked if it could be turned off, very curtly told no, reception staff not very helpful, after talking to other passengers who also agreed they had problems with reception. tried other restuarants Meditteranean pasta and pizza, average, latitude 53 was ok, but not exactly what we would expect from a restuarant that appeared to be a bit more upmarket than others. drinks were free, rather most drinks were free, could drink oneself silly as a lot did especially on the pool deck Entertainment was somewhat amatuerish, girls and guys prancing around and trying to sing, more like yelling, too loud afoten had no idea what they were singing about, the best night was when they had the comedian steve? terry he was very funny. Excursions to Rome-Florence-Pisa etc were very expensive almost £200.00 per couple, and those places would be jam packed with tourists, All in all for us was not a good experience, could, and should have spent our money elsewhere .not on a cruise, we agreed that it was an experience not a good one and we would never ever go on a cruise again, although there was one guy who had done 54 cruises in 7 years (must have been insane) The plus side was our cabin staff were absolutely amazing Madelyn and ? cannot remeber his name nothing too much trouble. Lots of bad reviews noted before travelling but need not have worried. This was our third TUI cruise having previously been on the Dream and Discovery 2. The Explorer was larger than both the previous ships and displayed positive signs of the recent refurbishment. The Latitude 53 restaurant was very good and had enough of a menu choice to keep us occupied over a two week cruise, we dined in the speciality restaurant Kora La and Surf and Turf paying a supplement and both were well worth it. The Balcony cabin was ok, maintained very well by Andrew our steward who was perfectly discreet but kept an untidy bunch from making too much of a mess in our cabin. The kettle and fridge were a useful addition and despite the cabins being 16m sq it was just big enough for us to not be on top of one another. The service delivery throughout the ship was magnificent as always, every member of staff was polite, courteous and couldn't do enough for us wherever we went or whatever we did. Definitely the company's best asset. A special mention for the show cast who were Broadway standard every night and even the guest entertainment was very good. There is not much I could criticise but if pushed Marella should look to improve their ports of call, or indeed stop mooring in commercial locations. We didn't mind this too much initially but on two occasions there was a charge for the shuttle bus which we thought was taking liberties given the cost of the cruise. Propriano in Corsica was a very nice exception to this to be fair however. Our final comments have to go to the bike excursion team, in particular Nico and Ahsleigh for looking after us on our Rome trip - different class!. In addition head waiter Carlos and his team of Chris, Mark, Frank etc etc were amazing. A nice ship with great staff and magnificent entertainment - shame about Marellas first pub the Squid & Anchor which brought an all inclusive hotel clientelle to an otherwise perfect two weeks cruising, if you just don't go there then it doesn't impact on you too much. This was our first cruise. We had read the various reviews and as a family with children, we wanted to see whether we suited cruising, or it was something we enjoyed. The ship was clean and we could see the staff working hard everyday with maintaining the ships paint and cleanliness. The cabins are dated slightly but the beds were comfortable and the cabin steward was lovely, every day making an animal from the towels for my son. You have plenty of towels, including ones for the sun beds, which makes a nice change. The food is good. There is a selection of restaurants, some you pay extra for more elaborate dining, but the Orion and buffet food is good. The Orion staff were very much a part of the key service you can expect. My glass was never empty and they would talk to you and get to know you all. That little time spent makes all the difference to us and was very much appreciated. The captains gala is a nice feature with photos that you can have. The captain was very informative in his morning announcements and I liked the little humour he would share within his information. Also very much liked that he personally saw off every guest at the end of the cruise. The destinations are a mixed bag. We had been looking forward to Pisa, however we booked a short trip, which left us little time to explore. That was our first lesson and we learnt about what to expect. Monaco and Savona were lovely stops and we did our own thing which is easy with the information provided. I have to say that we had been dissappointed with Toulon. It felt out of place from the other destinations with little to see and do. The ship appeared busy that day, so we thought that others must have felt the same. We made a similar mistake to Pisa in Barcelona. We had picked a short excursion and so didn’t see anything of value and missed the key sites. Our fault in not selecting a more diverse tour. The entertainment is very good. There is something in every bar from acoustic to the full on broadway type productions. The costume to these are extremely good and the entertainment crew very talented. We thoroughly enjoyed the shows every night. What makes this ship is the staff. Yes the lights and decor are a little old and the toilets play up. But the staff in the most are amazingly friendly. They are attentive and helpful. The bar and drinks waiting staff are under pressure and so you do have the wait for a drink, but you can go up yourself when this is the case. We were all inclusive and sometimes felt that we were analysed for having two room numbers for five drinks ordered. I’m not sure what that was about? Basically the family have loved their first cruise. We can’t wait to book our next and know that we know want longer experiences. In that the cruise was a success for us. From reading some reviews maybe the ship sets a expectations for us first timers, rather than for a sessioned cruiser. Read Less

As first time cruisers we were excited about the prospect of seeing a bit of the med via a family orientated, sparkly new cruise ship. We were disappointed from the start. The welcome was lack lustre and as a result we had no idea where to go or what to do while we waited for our cabin. Our cabin (a junior suite with balcony) was nice until night came. We were directly above the Squid and Anchor “pub” and our bed pulsated until the early hours to the beat of the music downstairs. After much complaining we were moved for our second week. This time to the tenth floor. This room whilst quieter was slightly smaller and had a much bigger problem. Every day, without fail, the toilet would block..... often while we were out..... the shared vacuum system is horrid and I saw over flowing toilets on more than one occasion. The housekeeping staff were fantastic and extremely hard working, some of the bar staff however (coffee port) were pretty miserable. The evening shows were fantastic and a real highlight!!!! The food was good but the selection could have been better, I’ve been on all inclusive holidays with Tui in the past year with much better food selection. Probably my biggest problem with this cruise though was that it is advertised as All Inclusive..... this is not! WiFi is extra and expensive, drinks before 10 are extra, ice cream..... extra. It just feels like they are trying to squeeze money out of you at every opportunity. Please note this ship is not new, it has been revamped, and well, but it is a bit rough around the edges. The gym is run by Champneys and is the best equipped gym I have ever seen in any holiday resort. Some of the classes cost extra. The 45 minute ‘no leave’ sunbed rule is not enforced and finding sun beds on a sea day is very challenging. This is branded as a family cruise ship but as our kids are at private school their summer holidays start 2 weeks before state schools. The first week we were cruising was mostly adults.....OAPs to be exact and there was a distinct feeling the kids were not welcome. The second week was better but I still heard older people joking how there seemed to be a lot of kids skipping school! In conclusion I definitely think I will cruise again but it’s unlikely we will cruise with Tui..... I will be looking for a higher end cruise with less child intolerant fat old people..... if such a thing exists. Read Less

Chose this as my first cruise and went with two children 11 and 12. Embarking was a long slow process and then the fact I had paid all inclusive wasn’t on my card , so once I realised that it was a Visit to reception, where a very unfriendly woman asked for all my booking paperwork. Finally got it sorted and they reimbursed my money already spent on drinks- although by that time it felt it was all unwillingly. The ship prided themselves on friendliness but I have to say we didn’t feel that at all. Cabin was old and dark. The beds were the most uncomfortable I have ever slept (or not, as the springs were digging in) in. Dining was extremely average, well below really - but I can’t comment about the top end restaurant as we didn’t try it. Entertainment was ok, comedian was funny. Kids not impressed by any of it. They didn’t take part in the kids club as they were just a bit too old. I made use of the gym everyday. It was small and the rowing machine had not been maintained so couldn’t be used. 2 out of the 3 bikes worked. Did tell one of the gym supervisors but nothing changed. Otherwise it was acceptable and always clean. Ports were easy and we made our own way to see sights at them - glad as the trips were very expensive. I would not go again with Tui and I think it has put me off any more cruises. Read Less

Went on the TUI Discovery as part of a cruise and stay holiday and had a great time. Have heard negative reviews of the ship and spoke to some people who didn’t like the size, too big, food not good etc, but can honestly say it’s one of the best holidays we’ve had. We have cruised with NCL, Carnaval, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Thomson and all have something different to offer, but this ship was easy to navigate, lovely staff and very clean. Room was compact but improved by changing the layout to twin opening up the space in the middle. Shower was dreaded curtain, clinging to bits I didn’t know I had. Room kept clean and the couple of issues we had were quickly fixed. Dining, MDR was very good and we used for lunch and dinner most days, always enjoying the food. Service particularly by Alex from Macedonia and Bobby from Indonesia was very good. The Italian restaurant up the stars was also very good. We used the buffet for breakfast and discovered a couple of issues, namely don’t sleep in as cups run out as does the coffee and juice, although they did eventually get replenished. It’s busy and everyone pushes and shoves. We used the glass house for the deli lunch and a couple of nights for tapas which we really enjoyed. We didn’t use the pay for as there was no need, food was excellent everywhere else. Bars, we used the Atrium, lovely place to sit and relax, the Bar 11 which housed the disco at night and were very well served by Alexsander. Live Bar was busy, it had the casino, and the Venue was quiet when we were there. Drinks were good, but ask for the bar menu and then, as there are few of them, photographer the drinks so you know what’s included in you package at all times Read Less

This was the first time cruising for my husband and I and I have to say it was the best holiday we have ever had. From boarding the ship at Palma to disembarking 1week later it was a very pleasurable experience. The ship is spectacular and absolutely beautiful, all the staff work so hard to keep everything running perfectly. We had booked an inside cabin and we were very surprised how comfy the beds were and how much storage space we had. It was big enough for our needs and was cleaned every day. The cleaners on board work incredibly hard to maintain the standards. Dining was a treat and you could eat as posh or as normal as you wanted the choice was yours. We found all our meals in al the restaurants on board to be well cooked, hot and well presented. The choice of food was incredible. We went to the Broadway lounge every night and was never disappointed in any of the shows. The cast of each show were exceptionally professional and did themselves proud. All the bars on board had good entertainment. We never had a reason to complain about anything on board. We booked 3 trips beforehand. These were a half day trip to Mount Etna in Sicily, Pompeii in Naples, and to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The only disappointing one was the trip to Mount Etna. It was a 4 1/2 hour trip but took just under 2 hours to travel there and 2hours back. You only actually got to base camp from where you couldn't see Mount Etna and only had about 30/40 mins there so didn't have time to travel higher up. The other trips we did were very enjoyable. We have definitely been bitten by the cruising bug and would not hesitate to book another Thomson/Marella cruise in the not too distant future. Read Less

Myself, hubby and our dear friends decided to trial our sea legs on a cruise to the Western Med. Looking through the Tui catalogue found us becoming more and more confused on where to go, how long to go for and which ship. Eventually we decided on The Treasures of the Western Med as we all wanted to do Sorrento (which unfortunately the sea was too rough to get us to port via Tender so we missed it). This did mean we had an unscheduled stop to Naples which was enjoyed with a glass of Pimms on deck - we didnt disembark here as it looked uninviting. The Majesty is an older ship and we were told she was a bit tired but provided everything we needed. Within the first 5 minutes of being in the cabin i hit my leg on the wooden framed bed as there was very little room available in the room. I found out later our friend had experienced the same bruise - both obviously in a hurry to look out of the porthole window. We went for an outside cabin but not a balcony as we did not feel the extra cost was warranted. The staff on the ship were very strict on washing hands and sanitiser which we were very impressed at as we obviously dont ever want to get sick while out in the open waves. All the staff were helpful, friendly and funny - even those who spoke very little English made every effort to be welcoming and friendly. The food was amazing, the shows were very good and the evening entertainment was great in the bars aswell as the main showroom. Some nights there was a struggle to find a seat but that is evidencing how good the entertainment team was. We went all out in the evenings and wore our best bib and tucker - not everyone did but that is the beauty of having the cruise that you want and not caring what others do - if you want to dress up then do it but if you are happy to be neat and tidy then that is good too. Some people went to the buffet for all their meals as the food there was immense and no special dress code applied. Something for everyone! Drinks package was a cheap option for us and we drank what we wanted, when we wanted and how much we wanted - GREAT! The excursions were not particularly great but it appeared that was ore about not a lot being available in the areas. Boarding and preparing to leave was easy and uncomplicated, the Tui reps were great and made all transfers very easy to deal with. The only thing that could have been improved was the excursions - value for money they are not! We loved it so much we booked again with P&O to have a flavour of another provider. This was for a shorter cruise (a taster) as i dont like the idea of accruing more costs on my holiday, i like knowing i have paid for everything already and no one is going to want to hit my debit card with extras. This was our 5th cruise. We have cruised with P&O (2 Times), Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and now this one and I must admit that this was the worst one if I compare with our previous 4 cruise experiences. The service is amazingly average. If you walk in with an issue at the reception their attitude was - "ohh what you want now" - not that they say it but their response is like that. We were entitled to free ironing one evening and we chose to use it on a formal night. We advised the guy who cleaned our room and he assured us that he will get the clothes done and we should just lay them on the bed. We came back from our excursion at 4pm and the clothes were still on the bed. We tried to get hold of the guy but couldn't. Th reception's response was lazy - they weren't interested. I sent a message to Thompson cruise team via their Facebook page letting them know that the cruise staff attitude towards us and overall, in general, was not high standards and theier response was: "Any complaints when you are on holiday with us, need to be dealt with on-board by either speaking with the staff on-board or raising this with Thomson Rep. We assist passengers who are yet to travel" This even after I explained that I have raised my concerns to the staff on board. The quality of food is average 6/10 - we were on Norwegian Jade last year and their food variety was simply amazing 10/10. Long queues at the restaurants will spoil your evening. They prey on people going to paid restaurants where a meal for two will cost £40. Do not choose them if you are getting other options. They were not very good - believe me. Raj Read Less

Our cruise was a last minute booking and as a result we could only get an inside cabin. These Cabins are very small and where a bit of a let down, the toilet is small but especially the showers, my husband is 6'2 and was unable to fit into it and if you carry any weight there is no way of getting into it, hence we were looking forward to getting home to have a decent shower. We also booked all inclusive, having had all inclusive on previous holidays were everything from food, drink and ice cream is included we assumed the same would happen on board and as we were not advised correctly by our travel agent we were very disappointed to discover all inclusive was not what it meant. Water & minerals bought by the bottle or can was charged to your account. Ice Cream in certain areas was charged and was only free from 12-2pm in the pool area. Coffee / Tea in the coffee port was charged Afternoon Tea Certain restaurants had surcharges and certain alcoholic drinks had surcharges None of this was explained to us. There is no free Wi-Fi in any part of the ship and you will find your mobile data is turned off in order for you to purchase the wi-if on board which was very expensive. We chose Thomson cruises because we were going on holiday with the family (6 Adults and 3 Children). The price was a big factor in our choice and looking for a cruise that would be more child friendly. My partner & i have been on quite a few cruises with cruise lines such as Royal Carribean, Silver Seas, Regent Seven Seas and Celebrity Cruises. We were not expecting the same quality as these lines, but the whole idea of the cruise was to let the children have a good time. On the down side of the cruise, the cabin that we had was very small and admitedly, the decor was quite tired. The cabins for the family however were really good. They were pretty spacious and they both had a fridge in them. Once we had got over the disappointment of the cabin we started to explore what the ship had to offer. We had the drinks packages for all of us. On this ship, the drinks package was very easy to understand. Drinks menus had asterisks next to the drinks that would cost extra. All very simple compared to a lot of the other cruise lines. Although the cabin was disappointing, the cabin stewards were first rate. Always a smile and nothing was too much trouble. On the Sunday each week there was a special offer on laundry - a sizeable bag, washed & ironed for approx 25 euros. No big bags of washing to do when you got home! On the food side of things, there were several choices of restaurant to choose from. We stuck to the same restaurant every night for the first week. The waiters (Manoj & Sumer) were fantastic and the children loved them. We learned that the waiters are rotated between restaurants each week, so when our waiters changed restaurant, we followed them for the second week.We had to leave behind a fantastic wime waiter (Katut) but had an equally friendly wine waiter in the next restaurant (Gabriel). The food was lovely, not over complicated and fancy like may other cruise lines. Anything that you wanted that was not on the menu was no problem, if they had it - you got it. The ports we visited were all interesting. We arrived and docked on time every port. Shuttle buses were there if you wanted to go out on your own. We did four excursions together and each one was really good, reasonably priced and well planned. Top marks for that too. Finally, most evenings we spent sitting on the top deck as the weather was so good and the children just wanted to run around and have fun. However we did go to the Theatre one night and it was very enjoyable. My partner has described this cruise as "Butlins at its best on water" , and I have to say that its a good way of describing it. The poolside entertainment during the day was great for the younger ones. plenty of fun & games and music. Overall we were really shocked at how good this cruise was compared to the much more expensive cruise lines. We have already been looking at the possibility of a future cruise for the two of us with the Thomson line. Read Less

We choose this ship as a celebration for my mum and dads 50th wedding anniversary and our 25th wedding anniversary with our children (13,19,21) The day the cabins where available we went down to Thompson holidays and booked our rooms so we could have rooms next to each other due to the occasion. We paid additional money to book rooms next to each other. On arrival we were pulled to one side to say that the rooms we booked were not the correct size for us so they had to change them and we were now not next to each other! Obviously we were extremely disappointed with this as it was going to mean we could not share our balconies and spend time with our parents. As soon as we boarded we went to reception to see if there was anything else that they could do and basically met with a really unhelpful lady on reception who said the only thing they could do was offer our allocated cabin booking money back which was £42, which we explained would not help us enjoy our holiday any more as we booked this as a special occasion to be with each other for the duration of the holiday. We then went to our rooms and realised that the only difference was one had a sofa bed and the other a normal sofa! We went back to reception and asked if they could swap the beds over if not my youngest son would be happy to sleep on the sofa, but they said it was to late and that room had been allocated to another couple and there was nothing they could do. We then asked if we could book the Steak restaurant on the Monday for my sons 13th birthday only to be told that they were fully booked on every night so clearly these restaurants are not big enough for the size of the boat. In the evenings you don't get allocated a sit down time for dinner but instead have to check in at the restaurant desk and wait to be seated - if there isn't any tables available you are given a pager and told to come back when it buzzes. Most evenings we had to wait at least an hour which was very frustrating!!! With this in mind every morning for breakfast we were having to fight with loads of other people trying to get a table in the buffet area, on a regular basis people were seen wandering around with food in there hands trying to find a table, which we have never encountered on any other ship so didn't start the day well. The staff all seemed like they were just doing there job and we didn't really get that friendly personal interaction which we have recieved on the other cruises we have been on. Where the money has been spent on the refurbishment I do not know! The rooms are quite large for the size of the boat but were very dated....as were most of the other areas on the boat. All in all this is the worst cruising holiday we have been on and we will not be booking with Thompson ever again! Read Less

Yes it is a new ship,we did 7 nights and had a great time.Obviously there are a lot of new staff on board , after 5 weeks they are finding there way round and some have never worked on ships before. We had to wait 2 times with the pager for about 20 mins, so we got a drink and enjoyed the view out on deck 4.As for no drinks waiters not true, the staff were very attentive and always happy. Our cabin stewards were outstanding and worked around us always, yes Discovery are trying new ideas , but like all new ideas take time to iron out. There wasn't a formal evening but 25+ dinners in tuxedos and evening wear,so if you like to dress up you won't be on your own . If you don't then you don't have to,the Broadway lounge was excellent and yes the drinks waiters we're constantly taking orders. So if you don't like waiting get a drink from the other bars before you go in and order another one, problem solved and before I forget if you don't like tattoos go on Cunard if you can afford.Dont forget tattoos are body art and mean something to that person.Overall cabin spacious plenty of storage, food excellent and yes islands does take time to get know where the buffet food is placed out.Overall a excellent cruise and staff couldn't do enough, only thing I dint like was reception staff in new uniforms, I think dress whites much more appropriate and proffesional.Just my opinion and would cruise on Discovery again. So you proffesional wingers stop it it's not clever and your supposed to adults,my little wing over Read Less

Some teething problems I think. We were in a suite so had priory book in, but when we got to the coach for the transfer to the ship, they waited an hour thinking more people were to come, who didn't arrive. Only when everyone got bad tempered they took us to the boat. We had priory book in but Only one staff member was dealing with our line, so was slower than the other. The photographer went before we were all checked in so none of us got a boarding photo. The person giving out the cups of water went so we didn't get a drink despite the hour waiting on the coach and 45 mins at check in. This was a cruise of two half's for me. Ship is lovely, shows were highest quality, rest of the entertainment bit same e same o every day. Used the spar excellent . Hubby booked us in for photo shoot, think they should have warned us they were not normal price but £100 each! But they were good so ended up getting 6 but won't ever do that again. We paid £200 each for the weeks drink package but service was so slow specially in the Broadway lounge where there were only 4 waiters. If you got one drink during the show you were lucky, long waits in the venue to specially during the quizzes that were the same thing daily, but the entertainment guys put their all into it. Not enough seating at breakfast, so people hanging round the tables waiting for a seat, no trays anywhere so lots of backwards and forwards to get breakfast. I'm not sure it was good value. I was also a bit upset to find other passengers only paid £120 ea some free. I had no complaints about the food but the Itilian restaurant only had two me use that alternated. The salad course and sorbet course dont exsist any more the Waite for the restaurants could be up to an hour.We could not land at one fester nation due to bad weather so we spent an extra day at see, there were no special arrangements in the way of entertainment for this. Customer service was excellent a big well done to them. Trips were great as always. We went during term time in England but unfortunately holiday time for Scotland so there were loads of kids running riot all over the show and was very upset when the lady to my left let her baby scream for 20 minutes through the Broadway show. They were running between the contestants during the quizzes. The ending of the captains cocktail party and formal night was a disappointment and the entertainment was geared up to the youngsters I'm 57. This was at least our 10 cruise and the one I enjoyed the least. I feel everything about cruising I enjoyed has been taken away, it felt like Butlins at sea. On previous cruises we were handed hand towels when we got back from trips and a drink. That's gone, some days the crew would have a little band to welcome you back, that's ended to. All that made crushing special has been stripped away. All that put me off after years of only doing Thompson cruises, I'm booking another for Venice October. If that's the same I won't be booking more with them sadly. Read Less

we have never on this ship before, last year we were on the celebration and loved everything about the cruise, with not 1 complaint, right from the start this cruise failed, no one from Thomson to meet us as we got off the plane to tell us that we had to collect our own luggage or even where to collect it from, nor were we told HOW to exit the airport terminal, once we found our way out of the airport we were finally meet by the cruise director and taken to the coach, it was only when we got to the ship we found that WE had to collect our luggage, it then cost us €25 to get our cases from the airport. TV was unwatchable, off more than on, we were woken up at 6:45am 2 mornings by kids NOT being looked after by their parents. cabin crew wanted to clean cabin just after 8am even though we had do not disturb. No UK sockets and no adapters available on board ship. the stuff left in cabin for drinks ( tea coffee etc) made 1 drink each then had to go to coffee bar to order more drinks, the drinks left in cabin to buy were not even in a fridge so red hot as no fridge in cabin. we eat in the buffet all the time building up friendships with a few of the waiters as well the head waiter who set up a wonderful surprise on our wedding anniversary, we always found the staff really excellent, the entertainment was good even met a singer (Benjamin Moss) we had made friends with on the Celebration singing on the majesty, we found the cost of shore excursions to much and a total waste of time so we went ashore when we wanted to and got more enjoyment that way finding our own way around the places we went. Me and my husband have just returned from this cruise and we can honestly say we loved it. We will definitely be going again next year. I looked at all the reviews and spoke to some people and quite honestly, some were awful, so I wasn't expecting much from this so we were very pleasantly surprised. The food was very good, our outside cabin was good although a little small, but that's not thompsons fault. We had a look at some other cabins, so next time we know where will choose. The entertainment team are very good, although the 2 little bands who sing around the ship at various times need to shake up their repatoir a little. Having the sunny destinations to visit after the constant downpours in England was amazing. The trips are quite reasonable although we only did the Madeiran one, we got the shuttle bus on Lazarote as its a bit far to walk. Embarkation was very good, easy. And a reasonable time to vacate your cabin min the last day, 9.oclock in the morning. Hygiene was maintained at all times, and very clean. The photographers were not to persistent, and the maid service was especially helpful and very polite. All in all, a great time was had. Read Less

Let me start by saying we had a fabulous holiday around the med on this ship and I'm sad to see it go. This ship has had its fair share of bad reviews however as a first time cruiser I have nothing more to compare it with other than the time I had onboard. Yes with the age of the ship it was a little dated but it certainly exceeded my expectations. Embarkation was swift and so well organised we quickly were given key card to our cabin and everything was ready for us to settle in. The cabin was 7550 on deck 7. It had 2 twin beds and a fold down bunk which was not needed, a picture window, It had lots of hanging space and drawer space and space under the bed to put suitcases. Believe me I took a lot of clothing and there was more than enough room for what we needed. The bathroom again was small but perfectly adequate with shower sink and toilet with toiletries. Satpal our cabin steward deserves a special mention. He was a most efficient cabin steward who kept our cabin extremely clean and tidy and basically looked after our room for the 2 weeks we were aboard. I loved the towel art he added as finishing touches and he was so happy and polite. Let's move forward to the dining areas. Dining was buffet style unless you booked a la carte at an additional charge. It was help yourself style and for what I paid for the holiday I most certainly can't grumble about the standard and choice of food. There was carvery meat and veg on every night and many different alternatives. Choices of starters and desserts too? The waiters again were extremely helpful and Midy and Ronny deserve a medal for looking after us. They looked after us so well it made our mealtimes very special. Drinks on board were all inclusive unless you ordered cocktails, branded drinks and speciality coffees fro the cafe. The unbranded drinks were excellent and the supplement cocktails were at very reasonable suplpliments we tried the hot stone a la carte and found it a great experience. Next to mention was the entertainment. Ross the entertainment director has a very special team of entertainers. Including Ross they are all extremely talented and provide entertainment as good as the west end. I can say this as I've been to watch many shows in the west end and I found the musical showson ship as impressive. The other entertainment was from a very young team and I can't say enough how talented this young team was. As for Ross he was fantastic (and doesn't do the amount of work for a chuffing 0/10 and quite rightly too) it certainly wasn't Benidorm at sea as one review described it. We did many excursions and I thought were organised extremely well and I thoroughly enjoyed them even though I walked my socks off. However I didn't go on a cruise to spend my time on the ship when there was so much to see. Finally all people I spoke to had a fabulous time and were pleased, they booked it. There were many planning to cruise again with thomsons in the future because of the experience. Hopefully this review will set those peoples mind at rest for the four weeks of travel this ship has left. Read Less

We stayed on the MSC Armonia for family vacation (one week cruise). My parents booked the trip and my girlfriend, brother and sister was traveling aswell. I took time off work to go on this trip and can say on behalf of me and my girlfriend that we most likely don´t want to go on a cruise ever again. The experience was not good at all. My advise is don´t ever travel with MSC cruises! - The customer service was non existence. Generally language wise employees had problems understanding english and some didn´t understand english at all. In addition the reception gave bad information regarding activities at the designated islands where the cruise ship stopped. We were told that we had an all inclusive package, but experienced extra fees everywhere if you wanted something out of the ordinary (like smoothie etc.) - The standard of the cruise was depicted by the travel agency was not at all near our expectations. I agree with other comments here regarding the standard was poor, it was said to be a newly renovated cruise ship. This was NOT true, I got an allergic reaction on my noose because I´m sensitive to dust (picture can be provided). Even my GF got sick by staying on the ship because of the dust and air quality. In addition the bathrooms looked old and tarnished. We actually had to clean our own cabin when we arrived ourself because there was hair in the bathtub. - We were promised that there would be gluten free alternatives onboard, my girlfriend has gluten intolerance. The restaurants there had almost next to none alternatives, they provided some dry bread, thats it. We had to use all day and our time and effort to find alternatives for her.Every time we arrived at the restaurant we had to explain and ask for gluten free alternatives even though there was the same people that served the meals every time. In addition my parents had problem with their cabin the air ventilation did not work and there was a bad smell in the whole cabin. The people working there came up with no good alternative. They said the cruise ship was full, so they had to sleep in this smell for seven nights.   Read Less

We have just returned from a seven night cruise on the Island Escape starting from Palma and visiting Ajaccio, Livorno, Villefrance, Toulon and Barcelona. This was our first time on the Island Escape and indeed was our first cruise. So what is there to say about the ship and the experience. Well it's a tale of many parts, some good some not so good. The ship itself is an ageing refurbished car ferry. Although clean and functional it has reached the point of no return really. There are numerous areas where the accommodation is worn and damaged. So it most definitely is not plush. In a way we didn't mind that so much. But we did object to the fact that the main cafeteria called the Beachcomber was too cold. We saw quite a few older passengers huddled against the cold that was caused we were told by the fact that the air-conditioning could not be controlled to particular zones. The next part of our tale which was the very friendly staff. They were kind and helpful. The service in the dining rooms and bars was excellent. If you put a plate down or finished your drink the plate or glass was gone and staff offered to get you something else. Another part of the tale was the catering. There was a constant supply of freshly cooked food all day. I really do mean all day. The range of meals can best be described as basic English fayre. But it suited us and we had no concerns about that at all. I am very fond of custard and crumble and was pleased to see it served every day, The dining rooms were spotlessly clean. Yet another part of the tale was the entertainment. This was very popular each night with the theatre being full for a range of shows such as games, comedies, musicals and reviews. To be honest and not to be unkind the shows reminded me of well meaning and earnest sixth form presentations - they lacked any real merit or content but the staff tried hard. We only managed to ensure about 10 minutes before the experience was too unbearable. The captain tried his best to shake hands with passengers and to grin his way through painful photographs with passengers ... It must be hard to remain enthusiastic each week. I felt a bit sorry for him having to do the rounds and to profess an interest in people's life-stories .. I think that on board prices were expensive and there was a feeling of Thomson always wanting you to spend money on something or other. The wife said that the hairdressing prices were well above high street rates. To be frank they must have been high for her to notice. We thought that the excursions were unreasonably expensive. Our advice is to avoid them and make your own arrangements. So overall would we travel on the Island Escape again. Well the answer is yes ... if ... if the main package prices were competitive and if the destinations suited us .. So, we can sort of give the Island Escape our endorsement .. it's worth a try but don't expect a plush cruise ship ... which is okay for us ... Hemster Read Less
