Holiday Cruise. The entertainment has its ups and downs. The comedian was very entertaining, and the dance/laser show was spectacular. However, the musicians in the lounges were mediocre at best, and poor in several painful instances. The blues band has a talented female singer...too bad she was overpowered by a bass player that was so loud, the lead guitar could hardly be heard. The dueling pianos should should have dueled to the death, doing a favor to everybody who had to put up with two poor amateurs playing off one another. The rock band was OK. The music was loud but, that's rock and roll. A real bummer was the casino personnel. As a traveler, who has made over 50 voyages, I have never been so poorly treated by the casino staff. They were rude, offensive and made even a small amount of winning into a most uncomfortable occasion. After being told how hard to throw the dice, how high to throw the dice, and how my wife should bet, we got away before the bad vibes got any worse. The personnel said these were simply the rules of the house, but as experienced travelers, who have recently played on other Holland ships, we knew this was not true. With the TV not working for several days, the bands being either much too loud or poor (or both), finding something fun to do was much harder than it should have been. Read on about the room...and the picture just gets worse. There is a pervasive language problem on the ship. Everyone speaks a little English...just enough to fool you into thinking they understand you, until you realize they don't. Thus, asking for an apple, becomes problematic, asking for sauerkraut becomes a three way conference, and asking for directions makes you wish you had a GPS, just for getting around the ship. This was my very first cruise. Embarkation in Fort Lauderdale took much longer than I expected. Other passengers in line commented that it was taking longer than they had experienced before. Disembarkation was pretty smooth. But once we were on board, it was smooth sailing! I LOVED this ship and this cruise! Entertainment: The newly added Rolling Stone Rock Room was hands down my favorite evening entertainment on the ship, in fact a highlight of the cruise as a whole! Relaxed environment, incredibly talented musicians in the Rock Room Band, and a diverse audience dancing and enjoying the shows. I was also very impressed with the BB King All Stars performances. Having those solid options to enjoy almost every night was great. The Billboard Pianos were not my cup of tea, but I saw others enjoying it regularly. The Crow's Nest was also a favorite hang-out spot for me - wish the coffee shop in there was open earlier, but it was a good place to play cribbage or other games available, or just watch the scenery on a comfy chair in a spacious area with a modern, peaceful vibe. Dining: I have only one minor complaint about the main dining room. One time we were seated with strangers without being asked our preference on that - our tablemates also weren't asked their preference, and the couple was surprised to have us join them when they were celebrating a momentous birthday! We all made the most of it and made friends -- but if it is important to you to dine alone I'd recommend specifying that if it's unclear. Otherwise our MDR experience was excellent throughout. We tried one specialty restaurant, Tamarind, which was very good. Get reservations right away, there were only a couple slots open when we called on I think night 3. Excursions: We did 3 excursions booked through HAL. The process was very easy. The prices were reasonable. Each tour had its hits and misses. The one I would definitely recommend is the Panoramic City Tour in Amber Cove (Puerto Plata, Dominican Rebpublic). Definitely do a tour that gets you out of the cruise ship center at that port - the cruise ship center is beautiful, but it is very insulated from the city and actual culture. Detailed cabin comments are below - loved the Sun Deck verandah room 11031. Read Less

We sailed the HAL Koningsdam on 12/28/18 for 7 nights on the Eastern Caribbean cruise and it was so refreshing, relaxing and enjoyable. We generally sail with Celebrity (have been on 7 Celebrity cruises in the last 3 years). We were on a wait list for the Celebrity Eclipse and Reflection but I wasn't feeling the possibility of getting on either of these ships very good so we branched out and booked a Neptune Suite on the Koningsdam. IT WAS A HEAVENLY ROOM, to say the least! Huge King size or larger bed, nice seating area, bar, balcony, large port window in the front of the ship, wonderful bathroom with jetted tub and shower, double vanity sinks and I could go on and on. We had 2 stateroom attendants that were top notch and we ate every breakfast and nightly meal in the Club Orange. It is a restaurant only for Neptune Suite holders (and above). It was a restaurant on the way to the larger dining room, which we only experienced once since the Club Orange isn't open for lunch everyday. The Club Orange is something new for HAL and it is only being utilized on the 2 new Pinnacle Class ships, the Koningsdam and the Nieuw Statendam. The food in Club Orange is wonderful, they cater to your every whim and wish. They have the normal dining menu with additional entrees added on for more selection. If you choose the additional entrees they are cooked right before your eyes in the Club Orange restaurant. Wonderful chef, hostess, manager and servers is all I can add. They leave absolutely nothing to be desired. The sommelier in Club Orange was wonderful. Celebrity YOU HAVE LOST A COUPLE OF CUSTOMERS BECAUSE THE KONINGSDAM PUT YOU TO SHAME! Entertainment was wonderful. Their theater is small so go early or you might not get a seat. We loved every show, some were over the top! Love the Piano bars and the orchestra as well. The CHOCOLATE NIGHT IS SUPERB ALSO! Read Less

This started poorly with the embarkation process. Very unorganized and SLOW. once onboard, no music (Usually a calypso band playing on other cruise lines), no welcome drink. To top it off, we didn’t leave Port for four hours waiting for the meat delivery! Holland did nothing to compensate for this late departure. Most lines will serve drinks or snacks or SOMETHING to ease the pain of inconvenience. Thie ship was nice, but the availability of entertainment was far less than mediocre. Also, the service was almost nonexistent at the pool and on deck. Had to keep going to the bar. The main pool was like a sauna because they didn’t fully open the roof! Forget about late-night - no food and not many entertainment options. The Main Stage Theater had less than average entertainment and the showtimes did not coincide with the dining. 2nd Dinner seating was at 7:45 and the last show was at 9:00. The staff was so slow that we had to skip dessert in order to see a show. There were two bands and a dueling piano bar. Nothing available after their last sets at 11 pm. I always felt like the staff was doing me a favor by doing their jobs. I will stick with Royal Caribbean or Carnival for guaranteed fun and better service. Holland America is not for me. Read Less

We're a couple in our mid-30s, no kids, and chose this itinerary as our first cruise. We were not looking for a "party ship" and Koningsdam was the perfect option for us. Embarkation seemed slow, several other folks in the line with us complained the terminal at Port Everglades is not equipped to handle the HAL Pinnacle class ships. It took roughly an hour and 20 mins to get through all the lines and onto the ship. We arrived at the port at 1pm. Ship: Koningsdam is beautiful and we loved that it had recently been in dry dock for some improvements. It felt clean and shiny every day, aside from a few problems with a women's restroom near the Rolling Stone Rock Room one evening. Unfortunately, the pools both felt small and crowded at times, and the Sea View pool is not very pleasant to spend too much time at due to the smokers being out there. We loved spending time in the Crow's Nest reading our books, drinking cocktails, or doing crosswords or Sudoku. Dining: We only ate in the Lido market once and did not particularly enjoy it. We found the smell of dirty dishes/cleaning materials to be very strong and unpleasant if we walked through that area, so we just generally avoided it. We opted for in-room breakfast every day although those choices were quite boring. It would have been nice to see something simple like pancakes and fruit as an option. However, we had dinner at Tamarind, Rudi's Sel De Mer, and Pinnacle Grill over the course of the cruise and thought Sel De Mer was absolutely delicious food. All three of those were worth the extra cost and we enjoyed the good service too. Activities: I will say that we wished HAL had a few more options for activities during the day that are not specifically aimed at older folks. Even though we realize that group makes up a very large portion of the typical HAL passengers, it would be nice to see some variety. We enjoyed the "Ask The Captain" talk one afternoon, the facts and figures are very interesting. The evening entertainment was excellent, and the musicians in both BB King's Blues Lounge and the Rolling Stone Rock Room are exceptionally talented. Great live music every night was a highlight for us. Service: HAL definitely gets this right, and every single staff member is working very hard with a smile on their faces! Bari and Arto were our cabin stewards and they were wonderful. The wait staff in the restaurants were also lovely and friendly. Read Less

We were looking to get out of town (Ohio) for the Christmas Holiday. So why not go someplace tropical. We have been on 20+ cruises and chose this one for the cabin location and and Koningsdam. The ship turned out to be just what we had expected. It is a very beautifully appointed ship a little over 2 years old with lots of food and entertainment options from fancy to very casual. We fall more on the casual side and tend to not enjoy 2 hour dinners in the MDR. Being in a suite, you have access to the "Orange" restaurant for breakfast and dinner It is a little on the fancy side but faster with excellent service. Lido deck buffet has all kinds of options...it does get a little crowded at time and the only negatives I heard had to do with the fact that servers behind the glass serve the food. Personally I don't have a problem with that because they will give you exactly what you as for in the quantity you ask for. And I prefer my food to only be touched by one person as opposed to everyone on the ship. Cuts way down on the sickness factor for me. Dive In for hamburgers and a Gelato and pizza place are opened quit late. Room service was not up to par on Koningsdam compared to the other 6 HAL ships we have been on. Entertainment, there is a lot of it on board from Rock and Roll bands, BB King Band was outstanding and love the music every night, Lincoln Center performances for classical music and recorded music in several of the venues. Stage shows in the 270 degree two story theater and numerous lecture on different subjects. Casino was fun but if smoking bothers you there was only one night that was smoke-free....HAL needs to get on the ball and make their ships NON-SMOKING. Several pools on the ship that never seemed overcrowded and a movie under the stars ever night at 7 and 10. Santa came on Christmas Eve and they had a beautiful tree in the atrium. Being a Christmas cruise there were way more kids that you would expect on HAL but most were under control and if not several hundred Grand Parents were there to say something. Service on board was very good from a cheerful staff but the folks in Management staff could use a little Customer Service training as most seemed a tad on the aloof side. Ports were pretty standard for an Eastern Caribbean cruise. Turks and Caicos we took a two hour tour around the island on a tram open air bus. Interesting to see how they have mostly recovered from Irma and Maria hurricanes. San Juan, Puerto Rico a little shopping and back to our balcony. St Thomas, a little shopping and lunch at Gladys' restaurant in down town CA. Half Moon Cay spent most of the day on our balcony as we have been here many time. All in all this was a nice get away on a beautiful ship. I probably missed a number of thing and places on the ship but that will be for our next voyage...there is only so much time every day for eating, drinking, reading, relaxing and entertainment. We stayed at the Renaissance in Fort Lauderdale the night prior to our cruise , and it was perfect for an overnight stay. We arrived late but were able to get good food right at the hotel. We wanted a longer cruise and felt a slightly larger ship would offer more choices in food , entertainment , and areas to relax ! This ship was perfect as it exceeded our expectations but was very easy to navigate , and I never felt worn out from walking . We already loved the other Holland ships , food , and wonderful TV in the room with free movies . Having tried most of the other lines , we found Holland was the best fit for us . We like the fact that they serve the food which is more sanitary and actually more efficient and faster service . We never saw long line ups except maybe for ice cream ! Also , pools are very important to me as I have arthritis and am a young senior . I like pools with stairs and railings down into the pool so I loved the pools on Koningsdam . (The smaller ships have ladders which are harder to use with age . ) The ship does a sail away in Saint Lucia right past the Twin Pitons and you can get amazing pictures from your balcony or deck. We paid $200 on another line to do a catamaran out to see them ! I love the way the captain sailed along the coast which was very beautiful and relaxing . In addition , Holland gives amazing service ! Although there were a few glitches as the ship had just come out of dry dock , we were so impressed with this ship and staff . The ship is far more beautiful than its pictures . Since I am not a fan of classic modern , I did not expect to love the decor but I did ! Of course , the ship is kept spotless ,and we usually had a window seat in the Lido and no fighting for a spot around the pool on this ship ! The divans and luxurious seating were everywhere , and I never saw so many people asleep out in public . The seating was so conducive to relaxing ! We only made it up to the Crow’s Nest at the end of the cruise, and it was so amazing with soft leather seating , We want to return to enjoy it more next time ! Finally , the entertainment around the ship is incredible ! The BB Blues and Jason and Mike were always the best ! There is live music for everyone’s taste ! We loved Helen Wilding , the singer who sang for the young Royals . Our only disappointment is the lack of bigger budget sets , costumes, singers, and dancers . That is the weak spot but overall there is just so much we love about Holland and this ship in particular ! Read Less

We took a Caribbean cruise on the Koningsdam last year and thoroughly enjoyed. We booked this cruise while on the ship last year. Koningsdam is a new boat and it is a fabulous ship. Great staff! The food was good, however, they need to freshen up desserts. Most are prefab, cakes using whip cream icing, not a lot of imagination until the final night when Baked Alaska was served in the dining room. (Note to Holland, Baked Alaska when served on the Alaskan cruises is made on a chocolate graham cracker or fudge stripe. Much better than the lady finger that was used on this cruise). The ports of call were Grand Turk (Turks & Caicos) very nice, although it was comical that the 'Catamaran' sail snorkeled within sight of the boat as was the beach, so much for the 'sail' portion. San Juan was still in rough shape and the 'historical' tour was interesting. St. Thomas with a 'Catamaran' sail to St. John was fantastic. The 'all lady' crew from Minnesota and Wisconsin were fabulous! Good sailors and great hosts. The snorkeling off St. John's beach was great and the beach fabulous! Two days at sea (the initial and next to final day) before ending up at Half Moon Cay were just right. A really great itinerary! We stayed in Fort Lauderdale to miss the mad dash to the airport. The taxi line was extremely long, more than 7 boats and 11-12,000 passengers were all trying to deboard in the span of about 3 hours. I wish Holland had an option of a passenger van to the local hotels. Overall, great cruise, great boat and crew, I would do it again. HOwever, it looks like Holland is raising their prices for next year, so we will see. The one 'production' show was a repeat of last year so we didn't go after peeking in. The BB King Blues Band was even better than last year. Dedrick Davis on trumpet! Billboard on Board - The Piano guys were a little off this year.... Read Less

The crew and service staff and very little regard for the passengers to the point of avoiding contact. Not once was i or my wife greeted with a smile and a hello from a crew member. The cabin stewart had very little regard fro our personal property and broke a medical device i use and left it on the dirty floor in pieces. The entertainment was old and boring. Dining was very disapointing we ate in the dining room every night one night i found half eaten rolls in the bread basket my wife found a bone in a rice dish. The lido deck was scary with raw garbage being wheeled out in the food service along side the buffett the floor in the lido deck dining are was covered with trash and food. My expectations weren't very high for this cruise due to some rather mediocre reviews on CC so I was pleasantly surprised by what a nice cruise it was. Sure, there were some things I didn't care for but overall, it was a really nice cruise. We had just sailed on the Celebrity Millennium in October and the Koningsdam was a lot nicer. Embarkation took a long time as the line was quite long going in. We were told it was because of increased security but I didn't see any additional security measures. Once we reached the check in desk, however, it was very quick. Our room was ready and our luggage came quickly. We had a verandah stateroom which although small, was a nice cabin with a very comfortable bed and lovely bedding. Our cabin steward did a good job and our room was cleaned twice a day. I liked the Elemis amenities which were in dispensers on the wall. The shower was plenty big but the bathroom is definitely for one person only. We had plenty of closet space and the fee for laundry was reasonable although we didn't use it. We really liked the Lido buffet and appreciated that the food was served by servers rather than passengers serving themselves....much more sanitary. We usually ate in the MDR which was also very good and everyone in our group was happy with the food. They had a nice variety of movies on the in room TV which was a nice large flat screen. We also liked the food at the Dutch Cafe. Since we were on the ship for Christmas, the ship was decorated beautifully and they played Christmas music in the public areas. The entertainment was reallly good with the exception of the comedian which I didn't find very funny. The dancers are really talented and the shows are well done. They did a Christmas chorus on Christmas Eve and actually sang Christmas Carols. It was lovely and I really appreciated it. They also had Santa come on Christmas morning for the children. We went to Trivia several times and it was fun. There were some enrichment talks but none were of interest to us so we didn't attend. Overall, it didn't seem like there was a lot to do on sea days. We had two teens with us and it would have been nice if they had announced teen activities in the daily bulletin. They chose not to go to the Club Hal activites but might have if they had been announced. We took two ship excursions....the one on St. Thomas to the shipwreck and Turtle Cove was really a waste of money and had way too many people. The other was the horse ride on Half Moon Cay which was a lot of fun....especially riding in the ocean on the horses. We went to the gym several times and while it was very nice, there was no hand sanitizer anywhere to be found. I noticed that many people didn't wipe down the machines when they finished with them. There were a lot of programs through the fitness center for aging, foot analysis, etc. none of which I found of interest. We didn't use the spa so I have not comment on that. I didn't like the hand washing stations at the front of the Lido....most people didn't use them and there was no hand sanitizer in the area. They did have hand sanitizer around the ship but not in the Lido. There was an extra charge for smoothies on the room service menu---I think they should have been free. We brought our own water and sparkling water on the ship so we didn't have to buy any but you could bring your own water bottles and fill them with ship water. They had lemonade, iced tea, hot tea and other beverages in the dining room. They had a really nice selection of teas which as a tea drinker I appreciated. Overall, this was a really nice cruise and we enjoyed it very much. Read Less

1st Time cruiser, solo. Navigation Deck, Veranda room. Perfection at every point. Ship, people, room, meals. Ate at all specialty restaurants, which were very good. The De Libreje evening a special treat. Dining Room twice, pleasant, but a bit overwhelming for me. An array of activities to choose from, simple excursions, a broad range of people, ages, nationalities. Entertainment minimal but enjoyed by those in attendance. Have already booked for next holiday season as well as extended Mediterranean trip this August. Single supplement a definite financial drag, but veranda, sun, air, and starlit nights not to be missed. Excursions expensive but good support for people and regional n post hurricanes. Damage evident, but people in good spirits, welcoming, working to rebuild. The private island a special treat with a beautiful stretch of beach. Embarkation slow but expected. Disembarkation moves quickly despite long line. Highly recommended for a restful and beauty filled 7 days. Read Less

This was our 8th cruise. Previously we have cruised with Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity, and Holland America. This was my 3rd Holland America cruise. I had a good experience in the past. The service was superior and the food was fantastic. But I was disappointed by my recent experience on Koningsdam. To be fair, the boat is quite new. The bathroom was an upgrade with glass sliding door and more spacious shower room. The shower water pressure was very good but the toilet had bad smell all time even with frequent flush and closed lid. The actual stateroom was smaller than other Holland America ships. Good in room movie selection. The buffet services was good. The dining room selection was limited and the service was slow and not very diligent. Two nights the server skipped a course of our dinner without informing us. The fitness center was small. No space for people working on mats by themselves. The studio room was always busy with classes to sell people skin care or shoe inserts. The evening performance and performance during the day was subpar. No comparison to what we saw on Celebrity and Princess ships. The casino staff was non-ethical. They kept soliciting my 74 year old mother to gamble more. One night after losing over $1,000 they solicited her to charge to her room another $1,000 at 2:30AM. Of course my mother is an adult and responsible for her actions, but it was non-ethical of the casino staff to keep soliciting a senior with obvious health conditions to gamble more. There was no educational materials to help people with gambling issues displayed in the casino. Most casinos have something educational displayed. Making money is certainly important but it is more important of being a conscientious human kind to not take advantages of the elderly. Read Less

One head waiter Zahar was exceptional. David in the Lido was great. The entertainment could use improvement. The dancers featured too much ballet. The costumes were plain with little or no scenery, benches only in the farewell review. The ventriliquist got boring after 10 minutes as he kept calling guests up to the stage. One guest especially seemed uncomfortable. He was paid to entertain no the guests. There was a lack of music during the day. The same BBC Earth was played over and over poolside. Enjoyed the Holland America Cruises from the past and this one was on a fairly new ship. I don't really understand why there are negative reviews as this ship does not deserve them. It had many restaurants and food selection better than we have seen on other ships and other cruise lines. We loved the Dutch Cafe especially the two ladies that ran it during the day. Everyone on the ship took the time to explain the different venues and food selections. I worked in the food industry and the ship absolutely deserves the top housekeeping score it receives. No one except the servers touched the food including the Lido deck . The food was interesting and quite different, many quick selection items were available. as well as many types of foods sourced from different countries. We ate one night at Sel de Mare and had an excellent seafood dinner, and it was worth the price. Watch for 25 % discount nights for the speciality restaurants as they are advertised that day on deck three. We also found a Tapas bar every night at 4 pm on deck 2 below the Casino. with novelty drink selections. The interior design of the decks was more modern that other Holland America ships and the decor was not the usual dark wood and Old Masters paintings. Our room was on the sixth floor and had easy access to elevators and main venues. We had no noise from adjacent rooms or above us. We made use of the couples spa package and were very happy with the sauna, spa, warming beds and speciality pool. We went on a non school vacation week and there were only 28 children. Average age of the ship was mid 70's, but there were age groups from all stratas. There is no kiddie pool or kiddie swimming area on this ship. I highly recommend this ship , it was worth it. This was our fifth cruise on Holland this year but our first time on Koningsdam. I am still in utter disbelief how they could screw up this new ship so much. Our cruise was a complete trainwreck from start to finish. Ten days of barely a day without some sort of debacle. Let's start with the good. The cabins are very nice and I will say the bathrooms have a huge improvement over the old ships. One downside is the balcony rooms no longer have bathtubs. The ship is new and very very clean! Our room attendants were wonderful. First off the ship is poorly laid out and no matter where you go you feel cramped in tiny hallways and restaurants that are too small for the size of the ship. This is the first Holland ship we have ever gone on that had a line for the dining room every time no matter what time you went. The service was spotty. A real hit or miss. The food was definitely not nearly as good as other Holland ships and was always cold!!! Specialty dining couldn't have been worse. The Tamarind took 2 hours for dinner and we left before dessert. The waitress was slow and the food made PF changs look good. Cold, bland, uncreative and the list goes on. The Canalletto was the worst dining experience I have had in years. We couldn't have felt less welcome. Our waitress was rude, we didn't even receive bread for 20 minutes and 30 minutes between course, all of which were disgusting. They never filled our water glasses, cleared plates. Bottom line we walked out and nobdoby cared. Bottom line is this ship puts a tarnish on Hollands reputation. It is an embarrassment to their name and the cruise line we have grown to love. If you are going on Holland go on other ships but not Koningsdam. We would never step foot on that ship again even it if was free. My complaints to corporate about our experience have gone completely unanswered which doesnt sit well. Read Less

Good food both in Dining Room & Lido Buffet area. Truly enjoyed the Canaletto and the dining hit of the entire cruise was the Tamarind -Great Lobster - Good Beef tenderloin & a fantastic server name Santi. Also a callout to our Wine Steward, Joel. Enjoyed the ship décor and open spaces to move about. Plenty of areas to hang out both inside and outside. Overall a very pleasant ship & great crew. The Casino was even politely kind; no big losses but no big wins either - breakeven was a good thing. Cabin was on Deck 11; great location and very quiet; but, Cabin service was very slow & a couple of days cabin was not even service until after 1:00PM. And, we left the sign out to have the room serviced. First time on HAL this has ever happened. Hope it was a fluke and not a sign of things to come. CONCERN: While we truly understand and accept the ADA and allowing Service Dogs on ships & planes and other public venues. Was greatly concerned over the dog on this cruise - Never saw animal wearing any identifying vest or tag, dog weighed well over 100lbs, was not always kept on leash while in public areas (Lido Deck during movie & on Half Moon Cay). As well often saw person with dog out and about on ship without the dog? Hopefully while HAL is obligated to allow Service dogs on board they will better manage this event. At a minimum I hope they leave a card in staterooms where Service animals have been so the next guest has the opportunity to deny staying in the room in case they have allergies. Again; a great cruise, good food and wonderful staff. Read Less

Embarkation was well organized and quick. We got to the terminal about 11 am and were on board about noon. We had a verrandah cabin on deck 6 aft. that was comfortable and clean. Bed was comfortable, air conditioning worked well, and there were no issues of any kind. Cabin stewards were very good. The bedside electric outlets and USB ports are very handy. Wall mounted TV with on demand tv and movies is nice. The food was very good in every venue we dined in. We liked the new Culinary Arts Centre. They held cooking demonstrations during the day, hosted by the Americas Test Kitchen. Between 4 to 6 pm they had happy hour, with half price drinks (off their menu) and also specially priced appetizers. They played nice background music and were eager to serve. Highly recommend you try them. Food in the Lido was quite good and had lots of choices. We really like the fact that the crew serves the food instead of the passengers helping themselves. This is especially good after seeing people not wash their hands after coughing into them, blowing their noses and worst of all, leaving the bathroom without washing! The Lido can be really busy, but we always managed to find a table. The MDR is also nice, but chaotic at times. We found if we went to dinner around 8pm we were seated quickly and it was a bit quieter. Staff in the MDR were good and eager to please. Tamarind is our favourite on board restaurant and it did not disappoint. Canaletto was also good. The entertainment was good. The cooking classes in the Culinary Arts were offered 3 times a day and were very well attended. There was lots of trivia in different locations. BB Kings was always well attended, as well as Lincoln Center Stage and Billboard On Board. We do miss having a proper library on board, and heard the same from lots of others. We also miss having loungers to sit on the promenade deck. The crew is wonderful. They really make your cruise special. We never felt crowded on this ship. There were always areas you could find that were quiet to sit and talk or read a book. Overall, we had a great cruise and I would recommend the Koningsdam. I think she may be my favourite ship. We wanted to try the new ship and also liked the ports as we are avid snorkel enthusiasts. We flew down 2 days early and stayed in the GalleryOne hotel which is on the water taxi stop. This was an early celebration for our 35th anniversary. Embarkation-we got there early and being 4* were sent upstairs. The staff explained to all that we would embark by the rows in order of when people showed up. However, she walked away and a male then came and said all 4* and 5 * can board now and it was chaos. Disembarkation was smooth-we took expedited because we had an early flight. Our Signature cabin was fantastic. We were surprised to see a murphy bed in it. The one disappointment is the bathroom-as most others have stated the angle of the toilet is very strange. We are also used to having a shower stall and a bathtub/shower combination in the previous Neptune or Signature Suites we have been in. In our suite this time there is no combination bathtub/shower and the shower stall is smaller. (we checked in a friends cabin that was in a regular balcony and their shower stall was wider). This can create issues for large/tall people. Service was excellent. Our room stewards were fabulous. All staff seem very happy. We did 8 HAL excursions and all snorkel ones. Most were fine but one was over crowded which made for a safety issue. We dined in the MDR (had as you wish dining) a few times and service was great and when we requested a table for 2 always got it. The Lido was great. Loved the Gelato (milkshakes were delicious). We dined in the Pinnacle a couple of times and seemed like there was more staff and service and food was excellent. Entertainment still lacks on HAL especially after the BBKings finish. We did find them repetitive after awhile too. The World Stage productions were good and we liked that there were usually 3 show times you could choose from but again-being on a longer cruise some of the productions were repeats. The aft pool seems smaller than normal which was a disappointment as we like to be in the pool a lot. Read Less

I myself am 71 years old but felt a youngster on board this ship.It was like being in an old folks home.Ship was Ok,nothing to write home about.Cabin was very nice, especially the shower.Food was excellent, too many speciality eateries My God,if you cannot find something to your taste in the main dining room, then there is something wrong with you.Pools were fine,a little on the small side for the size of the ship. The crew was excellent, especially the cabin and main dining room staff.Getting on and off ship was very efficient.Ports of call where very good, they could have left me on Half Moon Cay,that really was like heaven.Tv,s in cabin where of very good, good selection movies. My last gripe was the cost of the visit to the Captain,s deck and boiler rooms, which was US$150.00,not that I was even interested if it was free but for that amount are they mad?All said and done had a good time but was happy to leave this geriatric ship. The 10-day itinerary was perfect and the food was better than on other cruise ships. If you plan on drinking, though, be prepared to be gouged. They had a drink package, but each person would have to drink $65/day to break even. Bottle of mediocre wine was $40 and a glass was about $8. It is a newer ship and the rooms were very nice; even the shower, which is usually awful on most older ships, was well designed. The exercise facility was large and modern, too. Oh, and the price for a small bottle of OTC cough syrup was $24 in the dispensary (store was closed, where the price was a mere $18). Don't be in a position in which you need to be able to communicate via the internet (e-mail). When it did work, it was agonizingly slow and chewed up the expensive minutes. And be very careful in Bonaire if you use a private vehicle or are being driven by someone using one. The policy there is not to roll windows up and lock the doors because the thieves will just break the windows anyway and the vehicle owners will get stuck with the glass replacement cost. I had my watch stolen and another guy had all his cash stolen from the unlocked truck when we were shore diving. If you plan to dive or snorkel in the Dominican Republic, arrange with Aqua Adventures at Sosua Beach. Very professional, perfect English, personalized, and an excellent snack bar/small restaurant attached Like most cruise lines, the excursions are over-priced, so we booked activities online ourselves before the trip. This cruise was a wonderful experience! Overall a true 9 out of 10? Please let me start with stating that I am an optimistic person, who feels wholeheartedly that a vacation experience is what you make it. The ship is lovely. The staff was lovely. I would cruise on it again. The balcony rooms are small, but they are clean, have a really nice shower, television, and lots of storage. We enjoyed the movies at night, and the shows and entertainment were very good. We don't do excursions or gamble much, but want to give Kudos to the Happy Hour specials, because we do enjoy the occasional pina colada or Miami Vice. What I love about Holland is that the food is good every day! I would suggest eating lunch at the Pinnacle Grill. It is a great value for the upcharge of $10. You will need to make a reservation, because they only offered it two days on our 7 day cruise. The Crows Nest is one of my favorite places on the ship......relax central. They have the best Happy Hour drinks too. Just like a frozen dessert. This was an Eastern Caribbean route we have been on twice previously, but we love the BEACH DAY at Half Moon Cay.....this place is paradise....the most wonderful place to swim in the clearest, blue water. I would hope everyone could experience this in their lifetime. We would definitely cruise with Holland again. Read Less

Ship and room: The ship was very nicely decorated and designed. Our biggest issue was the design of the bathroom toilet. But according to other guests we are not the only people to complain about this. My husband couldn't sit on the toilet without hitting the shower doors. He had to use a restroom elsewhere the entire 7 days. Quite a disappointment. Dining: The other concern was with the size of the main dining room. We made reservations at the restaurants for 4 nights but was planning on going to the dining room for the others. Our first night we tried we were told that we had to wait for 60 minutes. others in the line had indicated they too had to wait over 70 minutes for a seat. We had decided on open seating to be able to come whenever we wanted. Unfortunately, after this first try we never returned. We ate in the lido buffet for 2 nights and the other was hamburgers and pizza. The restaurants which you had to pay extra for were very good. We went to the caneletto twice, pinnacle twice and the tamarind once. Our favourite was the tamarind. Service & Staff: Staff were extremely kind and very helpful. Always had a friendly smile and they seem to like their jobs. Entertainment: was fabulous - comedians were great, and the shows at the world stage were top notch! We spent every night in the casino after watching the shows. it was small but not over run. Guests should not be allowed to smoke in there since it was so small. They payouts on the poker and black jack were less then a vegas casino but still entertaining. The majority of the guests were over the age of 65...many were in their late 70's early eighties. I was quite surprised. Not many facilities or children which is what we wanted. Not a fan of going to Half moon cay - island owned by HA to spend the last day of our trip. it was a complete waste of time and another way the cruise line can make money. I definitely would return on another HAL cruise in the future. Read Less

Just finished a week on the new Koningsdam. I really was hoping for a fantastic time on the new ship since it was new, but was left very disappointed with this ship. Embarkation took over an hour to board, the longest ever for any cruise I've been on. It seemed that the terminal in Port Everglades was an older terminal and couldn't handle the amount of people boarding. Lines snaked outside before the long lines inside. The new ship was pretty from the onset and was excited for a great week. My Oceanview Cabin on Deck 1 was decent in size. The bed excellent as was the air conditioning system. The real mess up was the design of the bathroom. First, I have to say, this ship has the best shower anywhere...a large shower stall with great pressure. The oddest thing was the placement of the toilet. It's at an angle facing the shower stall and you have to sit side-saddle to use it. This was the strangest set up ever and everyone on the ship was talking about it. Our shower stall smelled like cat pee every day. We asked our steward about it and he said that it was drain backup issues and that he'd pour something down the drain to take care of the smell. That never happened. The sink was extremely small as well. It was nice that it was new, but not too functional. The TV stations were very limited and showed old shows with little selection. The new World Stage was very beautiful and do not have anything but compliments for that. All of the other public places blended from one right to another. The whole ship is claustrophobic with this layout. Several areas with entertainment were being drowned out by other open spaces with entertainment. The two areas that were the most disappointing were the main dining room, the Lido buffet and the Lido Pool area. First, the Main dining room is very closed in with low ceilings. Hard to described, but it felt like you were sitting inside a large whale carcass. The food was horrendous in the main dining room too. Holland American prides itself on their quality, but it sure was lacking on this cruise. The Lido buffet was bad as well. Lots of choices, but bad execution. This ship had tons of new specialty restaurants and I'm beginning to think that they bad dining room dinners push guests to spend extra money on a decent dinner. Tamarind Restaurant at $25.00 is the best option ever on any cruise ship I've been on. Excellent. Went there twice last year and twice this year. The Lido Pool how it is designed only allows a very small amount of lounge chairs. The Back Pool had more seating. Would I spend money to go back on the Koningsdam? No, I wouldn't. Too many things on the ship just didn't make sense. I would choose one of the older Holland American ships instead. As in many cruise lines now, the idea is for them to get you to spend additional money to upgrade in every aspect to have a better experience. Read Less

It was a Charter with a group I have been sailing with for the last five years. This was the third HAL ship they have used. Will very beautiful, services are slipping fast. Breakfast room service it very limited. There is no direction of staff in Lido. Never see Officers around the ship. The World Stage is not a good idea at all. HAL shows are not as good as in the past. Think the venue does not allow for big production shows. Met with the Customer Service manager twice to request a meeting with the Hotel Manager and it never happened. The Customer service Manager was rude and totally unprofessional. Tour I booked in advance of sailing had time changed that ruined our day in Grand Cayman. It did not deliver what was promised and timing was totally off. No refund was offered. Drink prices were higher than last year and drinks weaker. Culinary Arts Center, while interesting is not worth the price. We were looking forward to this new HAL ship as we totally enjoyed the Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam in the past. Read Less

I have enjoyed mostly every cruise on Holland. One of mine was not so good, but that was do to a typhoon from Russia that hit us after we stopped at Sitka. It was very scary and they chained the doors shut so no one would be foolish enough to go out and see the very high waves washing over the deck. That was the bad,, but no fault with Holland on everything else. The latest one on the new Koningsdam was fantastic. The food was perfect in the dining room and on the buffet. I liked the way the buffet served with separate booths and employees serving everyone and not as much waiting as the old style standing in a line for all of us to serve ourselves. This new way made it very sanitary and prevented a lot of people getting sick as has been in the past. The entertainment was the best I have seen on any cruise I have done, and this is my 37th cruise on many different lines including Holland since the 1980's. From their Lincoln Center with 5 young ladies with violins, Cello and piano..it was packed every night. The BB King stage was wonderful and lots of room to dance in the ship. The large dining room served fantastic meals and all the waiters I had were just plain fantastic also. Boarding and Debarking was so easy and done so well. I enjoyed all my ports and the tenders when needed were clean and comfortable. If you are looking for an upscale experience with a price for everybody.... you can't miss this ship especially. The cabins are designed so well and what a large shower I had in my inside cabin. I like the dark cabin at night and sleep so well. The large TV in the wall was one of the largest I have had on most ships. The sliding dome cover on the main pool allowed at great breeze and the configurations of seating overlooking the pool with lounges like beds and drawing sheets to separated many on them so you have a lot of privacy was perfect. The only bad thing about this cruise was I HAD TO LEAVE! Read Less
