This was my first Thomson cruise and to say I was disappointed is an understatement. I think had I been told this was not even 3 star I would have never had booked this cruise. The drinks service was terrible on New year it was very difficult to get a drink. One day we were asked twice in an hour if we wanted to buy a lotto ticket but we could not get a drink from the waiter. The food in the self service restaurants was cold and often dry. Not even real fruit juice for breakfast sometimes just water with a hint of juice came out. The reps seem to have little knowledge of anything and often become annoyed when asking a simple question. There is so much wrong with the ship that I would not return. I will say the staff in the Orian restaurant were great and the meals were better there. New Year meals was really good, I was a bit disappointed that we had the 6pm meal but when I heard what happened with the 8pm with some people not even getting a seat I was relieved. Our cabin a deluxe one had marks all over the walls but the cabin housekeeper did his best and was very friendly.   Read Less

We have just returned home from our first cruise. Our arrival at Montego Bay airport was a disaster!!!! Hundreds of passengers waiting in a very hot corridor, with no air conditioning, no water and NO THOMSON REP, for TWO HOURS!!! No explanation, no coaches to take everyone to the ship. There was nearly a riot. We were given a £50 credit per person by the Captain as compensation, but this initial experience certainly spoiled the beginning of our cruise. The cruise itself was very good, the excursions excellent (although a little chaotic). Our cabin was excellent and our cabin steward was lovely. The food on board was very good and the majority of the staff were very helpful, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The ship's air conditioning was too cold, I had to wear a shawl when we were inside in the evenings. The shows were excellent, very professional and enjoyable. Sadly, it was very difficult to get a sunlounger as selfish passengers had "reserved" them with towels and belongings and disappeared for hours!! Our journey home was not quite a bad as the arrival but Thomson did not control passengers leaving, which meant that three flights of people were allowed off the ship all together to queue (again) in the port building at Montego Bay. I felt really sorry for the lady Thomson rep who was doing her best to control passengers but had to put up with a lot of abuse from angry passengers. We would probably think twice before going on another Thomson cruise. Shame, as this was our honeymoon Read Less

so i book a New Year Cruise simply to Celebrate it in style, boarded the Thomson Dream with my husband and son Ajay on the 30th of december 2014 from Manchester as there were no flights from glasgow, also booked the hotel stay and car parking at Manchester Airport inn at nearly £100, we arrived at the hotel and were immediately asked if we would like to purchase transfers to the airport, eh sorry i thought this would be included, Rylie the thomson sales rep who i booked it through obviously forgot to mention these weren't included. so we wen't to the airport the next morning only to be delayed an hour after hearing that our plane was on the runway but there was a problem, a first choice plane was finally brought around and i'm thinking, hold on, aren't we supposed to be getting the Dream liner, well that's what i was told when i booked it and it's clearly on the page in the brochure. quite a few people had thought the same thing but apparently after speaking to a crew member, he said the dream liner has never been scheduled for that particular destination, it's always been First Choice planes. Arrives in montego bay after the 10 and a half hour flight, ( if your planning on watching a movie i wouldn't bother as the Headphones are rubbish) The flight in general was fine but the landing was very rough, the plane was swaying from side to side till we landed. Gets to the ship and there's a photographer to take your photo, who really wants their photo taken after all that travelling especially when my son went with a white t shirt and it certainly wasn't that colour when we got there so i kindly refused to have them done. Got to our cabin and our wee room attendant was there to greet us, very nice guy but not the best of cleaners, had to ask him to clean the toilet as soon as we arrived as it didn't look as if it had been touched from the previous family. We then had to go to the Medusa for the drill, would have just liked to have went to my bed but this is a very important procedure so wen't without complaint. New years eve was Captains cocktail night, we were so looking forward to see the bells in on the ship, excitedly got our best outfits on and headed upstairs to meet the captain, waited in a very long queue for the photo and were then sent in to the Broadway show lounge to wait for him to come and do his talk, we waited ages for that then it was time to go for dinner, i couldn't believe that people were running to the tables to get a seat, there was very limited space but we managed to get one in the end, i thought we should have been taken to our seat as this is what they usually do, the service was extremely slow and we were still sitting waiting on our dinner after 10pm, my son had fell asleep on the chair and we were all feeling very tired by this point as it had been one very long night of waiting. Eventually the dinner was brought out and i told the waiter not to bother with the dessert as i had to take my son to bed so after all that we ended up missing the bells, i was really upset that i had booked this cruise for our 25th wedding anniversary in february but decided to do it earlier especially for the New year and missed all the celebrations. It wasn't the staffs fault as they were running around like headless chickens and were very apologetic for the wait. They could have been doing with a lot more staff on that night. The drink prices are extremely high compared to the last time we were on this ship 3 years ago, the bar service in the medusa bar and deck 11 was very poor, we had to go look for a waiter or go to the bar ourselves. The ladies toilets outside the Broadway had 2 cubicals so always had to queue for them and were blocked a few times. The best toilets were the ones just after reception area, always very clean kept and had more cubicals. The lifts were a joke, my husband is disabled and had brought the wheelchair but the lifts were always full or you would wait ages for them, he ended up using his walking stick to make sure he could fit in the lift as they were very small so only the wheelchair and 1 passenger would only be able to get in at a time. A lot of the time he would tackle the stairs instead of waiting. On New years day we arrived in Playa del Carmen in Mexico, over 300 passengers got tendered off the ship and while we were waiting to get off the captain put out an announcement saying no more people were allowed off the ship due to high winds and told us we were going to dock in Cozumel instead, that was all fine for the people on the ship what about the people that were getting left behind. the tender boats had to bring all the passengers to Cozumel throughout the day. Could you imagine all them people coming back to port to see that the ship had gone! there were a lot of complaints on that day i can assure you and this was our first port as well. The following week we headed to San Blas only to be told when we got there it was too windy to tender, another disappointment, so that was another day at sea going around in circles because we couldn't get into our Next port early. Our next port of call was Colon in Panama, which as i thought we were going through the panama canal on the ship and that's why the Itinerary was called Pride of Panama, another reason why i booked this cruise , i spoke to someone else about it on the ship and they had thought it was going through it too, oh well so we booked the railway and gutan locks excursion, we fairly enjoyed it. we went back to the ship only to hear another announcement from the captain saying they had checked the weather for our next port which was Costa Rica and it was too windy to dock so we were staying in Panama for another night, well that was the last straw for me and many passengers, there were queues at the reception all complaining including myself about missing another port, i felt more sorry for the people who were only on for a week and only got to see 2 ports out of 4. We paid a lot of money for this holiday and waited nearly a year to do this Itinerary as the 3 places we didn't stop are the places we haven't been to before, we had been cuba, cozumel, caymen islands etc before and the ones we wanted to see we were robbed of. There was no compensation for the ports we didn't visit which i find very shocking and Thomson really need to sort this out. If you are going to Panama i recommend you do a ship excursion , do NOT go alone, 2 of the ships crew got robbed for their phones and the money they were sending home. They were a little shaken but ok and this was in the afternoon. Another reason i wondered why the captain would want to keep us in this port another night. it was a very dangerous place. Surely there was another port free on the way back to Montego Bay, he never gave us any option, we had to stay and that was that. Needless to say we didn't leave the ship the second day. we didn't get the £50 onboard credit that was promised to us when we booked it, my sister in law received hers and she booked her holiday 2 days after us, i asked at reception about it and they said there was nothing on their system to say i was getting it and that i would have to see my travel agent when i got home. i have read the small print in the brochure and it say only first bookings get this. Why didn't the girl at the reception desk just ask me if this was my first cruise with Thomson?? i had to work that one out for myself, i just assumed i was entitled to it because i was told that when i booked. The entertainment in my opinion wasn't as good as last time either, it seemed to be all the same kind of stuff on in the Broadway, the only thing different was the comedian once a week who were really good and also the Dreams got Talent, hence the reason why we only went to the shows 4 times in 2 weeks. but then again everyone has different taste and a lot said they loved the perfomances. my son took ill a few days into the holiday, started off as a sore throat and then a cough, he was shivering and had a very high temperature, i thought it was sun stroke so after a trip to the ships doctor she diagnosed an ear infection, so left with some antibiotics, a bottle of calpol and £64 medical bill , although i would have paid anything for my son to be better and that's how they get you. Flight was delayed an hour and a half on the way back too, thank god we were allowed to stay on the ship till 3pm and not put off first thing in the morning as royal carribean have done to us before, it would have been too long a day as our flight was supposed to be at 6.30pm and delayed till 8pm. I know this sounds like a very negative review but We have really compared it to 3 years ago on this ship which i have always described as my best holiday ever, fantastic itinerary, brilliant and friendly service, great entertainment, i always have rated Thomson holidays very highly but this ship has changed for the worse, wouldn't say it was platinum and i feel i don't want to go on another Thomson cruise again, i'm not saying i won't but definitely not at the price we paid. we met a lot of very nice people who have also said that they felt the same way. Might be hard to believe but this is the first review i have felt the need to do, Anyway, i hope i haven't bored you too much, All in All a holiday is what you make of it yourself and we really did enjoy ours, make the most of the ports you stop at cause you might not see another :), My biggest issue is missing the 3 ports, i feel really angry about that.   Read Less

While the holiday over all was very good we were very disappointed with the Dream which is now looking very old & tired. Toilets in the public areas were blocked every day & the deck area around the pool on deck 11 needed a really good clean. Thompson claim to recognise returning customers but we did not get any recognition & at times some of the bar staff were rude ignoring you trying to attract their attention. Apparently there has been a change of staff & I can only say it was not for the better. There were many problems with the airport, transfers & getting luggage to cabins which other reviewers have discussed. The £50 per person from Thompson went some way to acknowledging the problem but did not sort it out for departure which was still a bit of a nightmare. Booked a late checkout cabin only to return to have a shower & change finding the cabin door wide open with our property on full view for who ever chose to walk in thankfully valuables were in the safe. The bed had been split into singles & made up & the bathroom was in a right mess with a maintenance engineer working in the roof space. When we eventually got to have a shower we found there was no hot water! Complained to reception who said there would be no charge for the late checkout but got home to find payment still taken......thanks Thompson! This was our third cruse on the Dream but sadly it will be our last. This is not a platinum standard ship & not worth the price paid. Read Less

The holiday did not start well when we arrived at a suffocatingly hot airport and there were no buses available to transfer passengers to the ship. This resulted in a long, standing, wait in a huge queue in temperatures that are alien to the average Brit dressed for a journey from a cold climate. No drinks were offered. There were no reps there to tell us what was going on, or how long the buses might be. When we were eventually transferred to the ship on a boneshaker of a bus, embarkation was less than smooth. The reps were asking us to 'smile' for the camera that recorded your image for verication of your ship's card.... after a two hour wait in a sweatbox!! Not exactly how you want to be seen for the duration of your holiday! Our cabin was a couple of doors from the back of the ship. Now I know someone has to have these cabins, but they are extremely noisy and vibrate vigorously. On docking and casting off, you are lucky to hang on to your fillings! In our opinion, the food in the self service restaurants was not up to standard. It was constantly cold, repetitive and of poor quality. Definitely not a good dining experience. The Orion restaurant was marginally better. Drinks in the bars were expensive and some were positively undrinkable. Unless it came out of a can it should be avoided. The swimming pools were not inviting. The one on Deck 11 reminded me of a sheep dip. Our cabin steward was as usual, good. We also contracted the 'cruise cough'. The reps and reception staff on board were evidently receiving a lot of complaints, and some were short tempered and unprofessional when dealing with passengers, even when they weren't complaining. All in all, a not to be repeated experience. Certainly not on a Thomson ship. Its next port of call should be the breakers yard!   Read Less

Just returned from Christmas and New Year on the Dream. During a disappointing cruise on the Dream in September we were assured by the Housekeeping Dept then that the many problems that we were experiencing would be rectified and that 'all the stops would be pulled out' for the Christmas cruise which we had already booked. Oh. Dear! From the moment we landed in Montego Bay on the 23rd December, this went from bad to worse. We landed on time and were advised by the air stewards that once through immigration we would be taken to the coach and on our way to the ship within minutes. In fact we stood in a queue for over 2 hours and 15 minutes waiting for coaches. We were the lucky ones, some people waited over 3 hours. We were in a long corridor, with no air conditioning, no water, no information and NO THOMSON REP. to explain why there were no coaches to transfer approx. 900 people to the ship. When we got to the Cruise Terminal we were offered a small plastic cup of water - no apology for our long wait - nothing. The next day after I presume hundreds of complaints the Captain stated that he was contacting London to see what had gone wrong and offered all those affected £50 on board spending. We never received an explanation for the chaos. One of the problems during the September cruise was the poor condition of the cabin towels and linen. The towels were very thin and in some cases threadbare, with holes and frayed edges. This December we had the same problem. After a visit to the reception things improved but we still had a thin duvet cover with a tear. We were told by a very embarrassed Cabin Steward that they didn't have enough linen to change the beds for every cabin half way through a cruise and she was meant to rehang towels instead of changing them. Our shower curtain was stained along the bottom edge with mould. Although some of the toilets had been refurbished since September some were dreadfully shabby and on the last day al least four were blocked. On two occasions the water supply to the basins etc.,was turned off for maintenance. This happened on the final day of the cruise when people were hoping to freshen up for the journey home and had hired rooms for £35 only to find that there was no water. Each day we received info about the ports of call but when we docked at Falmouth in Jamaica the daily news gave us information about Falmouth in the South West of the U.K.!! Some of these niggles smack of sloppyness but most of them stem from a desire to cut costs. The main problem on this cruise was that scores of passengers became ill with dreadful hacking coughs - a feeling of weakness and unable to keep warm. Some stayed in bed in their cabins for a few days and all around the ship the sound of choking coughing could be heard. My brother in law was treated in the ships hospital receiving treatment for a chest infection and after three days of treatment (and a hefty bill) flew home on a planeload of fellow cruisers coughing for the whole 8 hours of the flight. The public rooms, i.e. restaurant, lounges, theatre etc., were freezing cold and although the staff were asked if the air conditioning could be turned down were told it wasn't easy to do. Lost of people sat with cardigans,or shawls to keep warm or avoided the cold rooms altogether. It was felt that the unpleasantly cold surroundings may have contributed to these infections, I have seen from other reviews that other Thomson Dream cruise passengers have had similar outbreaks during recent cruises. There was also chaos when leaving the ship for the flight home with three plane loads of passengers again waiting for coaches. The Thomson staff were completely out of their depth. Most of the people we spoke to were adamant that they would never go on a Thomson Cruise again. We are of the same opinion. This is not a Platinum cruise. However, it must be stated that as usual the cabin stewards and restaurant staff were very attentive and worked hard. Read Less
