We just got off this excellent ship after a six day cruise. Both my husband and I have physical limitations, he used a scooter the entire time, and I used a cane. This was the first cruise I can remember where when you went to get on the elevators, people held the door for you, stepped off to let you on, and helped you in ever way they could. No pushing and rushing in front of you to get on! A much different attitude. In the Windjammer, people were polite, and the crew always tried to help you in carrying your food to your table, and then even once you were seated they came over to see it they could go and get you anything. I can't remember a nicer, caring crew. When I spoke to one of the supervisors about the attitude, he told me that because it is a small ship, the crew is like family and like working together. You could tell! Yes, the cabins are small and do not have a lot of storage. Lacked a refrigerator, but would supply ice if you asked. There were a lot of hangers in the cabinet, but wished there were more drawers, also the handles to open the drawers were on the bottom, so in order to open the bottom drawer, the handle was on the floor. The bed was very hard, and was a problem after a couple of days. The bathroom was small, and the shower was the smallest ever, but the shower curtain was heaver so it did not stick to you. The entertainment was good, a nice variety with two comics, a magician, and one night of a variety show of dancers and singers. i did like that Royal Caribbean on this ship did not hound you to buy things. In fact there was never any announcement of BINGO, the only thing was a listing in the activity paper, also there are NO Art auctions! We cant wait to go back on this ship, and would book the same cabin, we were on the 4th floor, right at the elevators, but did not hear much noise. Also the only time I smelled anything smelly, was when we had to go out on deck six for the life boat drill. and then there was a sewerage smell. Read Less

My husband and I chose this cruise because we wanted to visit Cuba. The Empress of the Seas did not disappoint. We absolutely loved the ship. It was by far the cleanest, happiest, friendliest ship we have ever been on in some 20 plus years of cruising between us. The cruise director, Hugo, was the best cruise director we have ever met with a larger-than-life personality. I had to give him a hug after one of the shows! Oh, the entertainment was fantastic. The small group of musicians, singers and dancers was top-notch, and the shows were professional and incredibly entertaining. We loved them. We loved the fact that we were on the 4th mid-deck so it was very easy to get to the elevators and go up to the dining room and theatre. Everything was so convenient. We've been on the huge ships, but this was really nice and very relaxing and the ship is laid out very well. Everything is easily accessible. We chose that cabin for that reason. The food and service on this ship was OUTSTANDING! We ate in the main dining room for 3 nights and at Chops Grille for 2 nights. Chops Grille was definitely worth the premium. I had the most fantastic filet mignon there, and the jumbo shrimp cocktail was to die for. The food in the main dining room was excellent as well. All of the food in the Windjammer was fresh and varied - no end of choices. Good food is very important to me, and I was so pleased with everything. The ship was so clean! We had an inside stateroom, as we like how quiet they normally are and it was more than adequate. We've had balcony rooms, porthole rooms, and we've learned that for us, the inside stateroom is fine as we are rarely in the room, and we like the darkness and quiet of an inside room for sleeping. Our stateroom attendant was terrific. We loved all the bars and bartenders. No complaints here. Everyone was super friendly and generous. Our captain got us into Cuba a night EARLY! This was fantastic as the forecast was for rain the next day. This allowed us to change our vintage convertible tour we had scheduled to that night, and we did a tour of Havana in a hot pink vintage convertible for 3 1/2 hours. It was amazing and the weather was perfect. The next day in Cuba, since we had seen the major sites in Havana, we spent an afternoon downtown, and in a Cafe' talking to the locals, listening to local music, and drinking mojitos. Havana is lovely, and the people are friendly just as all of the other reviews have stated here. If I had only one minor issue on this 5-day cruise, it would be that unfortunately, this ship only has one pool, and the music was unbearably loud, and the pool crowded. Of course, we knew this would be the case, so we didn't spend any time there. We aren't big pool people either; however, I do like the ships that have the solarium pool, which is a separate pool with jacuzzi for adults only. This ship does not have that, but like I said, I knew this, and for an only 5-night cruise, it was fine. I did try one time to go down in the shade near the pool to read, but the loud (as in blasting loud) reggae music from the speakers drove me to the walking deck for some quiet. The walking deck was lovely and hardly anyone was there. In summary, for a short 5-night cruise, this is the ship that has it all, personality, cleanliness, great food, and service with a smile. I would do it again tomorrow. Read Less

Empress is stuck in the 1990's and does not handle anything but nearly calm seas well at all. She is in dire need of refurbishment. Her crew, however, was top notch. Costa Maya is not Mexico, there I said it. As a person who has travelled extensively throughout Mexico (and not all of them tourist spots) I can conclusively say that this port is horrible. You might as not even get off the ship. I had some pesos left from a recent business trip and a local vendor barely knew what to do with them. Skip this port and head to "Mexico" at Epcot. Havana was the reason for this trip. Having never been we didn't quite know what to expect. Our tour guide definitely was on a government approved script and while I believe that we saw some of the real Cuba, most was the approved version. That said, I would love to go back and spend more time in this country. The port arrival in Miami was horrendous. We docked at Terminal J and everything was pretty smooth until we walked out of customs/immigration. Our car was parked on the other side of the port. After asking around I was told of a "courtesy" bus to get us where are cars were parked. My paraplegic father (think wheelchair) couldn't get on the bus... so I went to fetch the car. The driver dropped us off at the westernmost garage. Half of the bus occupants were parked nearly a mile away and the driver refused to get us closer. Did I mention that it was raining? I was left to walk, in the rain, and play a real life game of Frogger with crazy Miami drivers. To say I was upset would be an understatement. Read Less

I have wanted to see Cuba since I was in 7th grade. Seeing the opportunity that taking a cruise there would mean we jumped at the chance. To see the places and meet the people I could only dream about. Boarding the Empress was like a dream come true. A ship from another time. Embarkation was quick and speedy as was disembarkation We were pleasantly surprised how beautiful she was, the crew was the greatest ever, all eager to please us. The staff in the main dining room and the Windjammer went out of their way to see that every wish was granted. We were reminded how small the Empress was and having been on the huge ships she was a welcome change. We never had to wait for an elevator, the lines that are usual in the Windjammer didn't appear. And always we found deck chairs for three, even while dining there was always a table available by the window, Oour cabin attendant Manuel was always around to take care of anything we might need, And the staff of the Photography Studio were a blast, taking pose after pose saving all our memories to paper to save forever. My husband and daughter especially enjoyed the comedian they had, and again plenty of seats available for every show. We will always look back upon our journey to Cuba with a fond memory of The Empress! Read Less

We choose this cruise because it spent a day in Cuba. It was very easy getting on and off the ship. We had a private tour with Blexie and he was very informative. I walk with a cane and he changed the tour to meet my needs. We were with him for 6 hours. When asked he took us to the Jewish Synagogues. The ship was easy to get around and looked clean and friendly. Our cabin was much more spacious than I expected. We had the bed separated but it was under the window with enough space to walk between the beds. We were in an outside cabin 4100. The Windjammer, which is the buffet, had one long line. I felt I was back in a school cafeteria. The food was fine but it was difficult to get around with a cane. Very little service was offered to me there. We had Any Time dining. I made a reservation on- line for 7:15 and never had to wait more than a few minutes , The choices were good, the lobster very good and they other me extra tails. The show were good and the last night we had rough weather. The dancer could not go on stage but they offered us a show anyway. We did not take any ship excursions Read Less

The 1st & 3rd night I had diesel smell in my room....You could smell the sewer throughout the ship. I am a diamond traveler with Royal Caribbean, been on 12 or so ships, but this sucked..."Do not" go on the Empress of the seas.... I must say that we had an excellent waiter and his assistant was awesome. We went my time dinning, but requested the same table for 2 each night. We always do fine dinning, but this time we didn't...Good thing because the food was not the quality we've had in the past... Our room steward was amazing. Over all i give it a 2 from 1 to 10......poor..... Again, I do not recommend the Empress of the Seas.... Read Less

We wanted to see Havana before too many changes, the Empress OTS had been our very first cruise vacation 16 years ago and so this looked like the perfect option to be able to do both. The Empress is a small ship and the cabins are small, but if you know that and prepare for it, they are livable. The fact that there is not a formal night and you don't have to carry a suit or a tux. The stops in Key West and Havana were both great, we had some concern about the areas recovery after Irma, but in general both were in great shape and glad to have the visitors. While traveling with a power chair, it is almost useless in Havana, you really have to be able to walk, use a cane or rollator. The worse part for me were the lines to get off the ship in Havana, as you queue to get off the ship, queue to go through customs and then queue to exchange money. But it is worth it to see this very cool city and it's people. Read Less

My scooter would not fit in room as promised. It was impossible to put a stool in the shower and that was promised. I had to go 6 miserable days without a shower.we had to beg to get them to put in 2 single beds. They took out the king bed and chairs so my scooter could get in the room at all. When we booked the cruise they also told us that scooter would fit in the room if we booked a junior suite, so we did. The scooter could NOT get in, neither could my wheel chair get through the doorway without being folded UP. Poorest customer service we have ver experienced on a cruise line. It was TOTAL misrepresentation and could even be interpreted as bait and switch. Read Less

The food was very good, they serve different menus every night, I like the Latin Menu. All the entertainment shows where fabulous and good for all ages. All the people that serve was very nice and polite. This is the smallest ship I've ever been, but it was nice because I'm old and can't walk to much, everything was at small distance and there were lots of elevators. The ship was on time at all times, embarking and disembarking. We had no problems at all the ports we visited. I recommend if you go for the first time to get an excursion to know the place before going on your own. The tour guides are very nice and answer all the questions you may had about the people, the places to go, shop and were to eat. The most important thing, had a great time and be safe. Read Less

The Empress of the Seas(because it is very small compared to the fleet) was brought back into RCI Service so that it could be the first RCI ship to go to Cuba. RCI spent over a year preparing for us to have great experiences in Cuba before they made their first trips last Spring 2017. They did an excellent job. Going to Cuba was so exciting and the entire cruise was directed at having an excellent experience in Cuba, Traveler be aware that the 9th deck of Jr Suites, do not compare to Jr Suites on any of the ships in the Fleet. Our memory may be wrong, but we sailed the Nordic Empress in 2001, 2002, and 2003 and the suites maybe were larger, or it maybe our selective memory of those rooms a long time ago. Probably the previous owner two to six years ago after RCI sold the ship, maybe changed the rooms on Deck 9 to get more cabins to sell as suits. The Jr Suites on the Empress compares to normal balcony rooms on the other ships. Now a couple of very small items. 1. In the Windjammer they have sinks to wash you hands before entering. WOW first time, and soooo much needed on all RCI ships. Most people just used the Prell. Maybe RCI has this on other ships, but we have not sailed previously since December 2016. So many germs are transmitted through hands not thoroughly washed. I washed on the way in and o the way out. 2. Probably because the cost of beef is so high, the Windjammer does not sever hamburgers during lunch, only in the afternoon and evening snacks. They offered pork, chicken, fish burgers as an alternate to beef during snack time, but no turkey burgers that are on other ships. But then the overall menus may have changed on all ships for 2017 3. We had no problem with the Windjammer Director treating us a special by having the chefs fixing special vegetarian omelets for our last two days after we told him our complaint that the only option at the egg station was either cheese or ham&cheese....no veggie options 4. However, I must award five stars for the Windjammer for their foods and more options for dishes..probably because of the chefs there versus other ships and the Empress was trying its best to create more and more excitement for our venture to Cuba 5. The ship is very old, only during peak morning and evening hours when many cabins would be using hot water, could you get real hot water as we were far from the hot water tanks. No matter how long we ran water to get hot water, it would just get luke warm. One night from 1 or 2 am until morning around 6, they had the water shut down. All week they had two to four of the engineering staff working on something where the ac or water tanks closets on our hallway. 6. Beware, that the shore excursions have good buses, which are AC which work great, but for handicap people is very difficult to get in and get out. The first step is about 18 inches up fro the ground unless the bus is parked by a curb. My suggestion is that RCI require these RCI contracted buses have a booster step for the first step like may taxi vans in the U.S. Also handicap people must realize that CUBA does not ADA laws so that there are no accommodations for the handicapped. 7. the Tropicana Show was a great experience and two hours of excellent entertainment, but it is July and the theater is open air, very very hot with no real air circulation. They asked men to wear long pants, no shorts....but after a few Cuba Libras the hot was not as notifiable...and the Cuba Libra were not true Cuba Libras (Rum & Coke with lime juice or a wedge of lime)..no lime juice or lime wedges..so it was Rum (excellent Havana Club 7 year old rum) and Coke. One free 6 ounce coke with a liter of rum for the table. Extra coke $5 (5 cocs) per bottle..of well it is a nite club...just two things...if you like Cuba Libras, bring a few cans of coke from the ship and also bring all the water the ship provides you..water is $5 per bottle. With over an hour to wait for the show, in the hot atmosphere, I would have used two bottles of water. The staff keeps telling you take water..we did on the shore excursions, except we did not for the niter club, our mistake... Bottom line, we will go back to see the show again despite the $154 fee per person or the $179 VIP fee. Do Not pay for the VIP as the management staff at the Tropicana were not thrilled to have us. He acted like we were a pain in the ass to have in his club. Our tour guide over and over told us when you enter the club they can not do anything for you..it is up to the their management...their management stinks, but the waiters were excellent.....the manager seated out party almost behind the stage where you could not see half the show..and we were VIP but handicapped...they just were very impatient with two of our party four who are handicapped. The excursion staff at RCI tried to persuade us not to pay the extra $25 for VIP without reason...that they could tell you as they were forced to be super positive... Bottom line do not pay the VIP fee, take your own water, extra cokes, and snacks to go along with a liter of Rum for four people. dress for it to be very very hot, but it is worth the experience, and we will do it again the next time we go on this cruise. In conclusion: Maybe some of you look on this review as petty or knit picking, But RCI did 100% (there is no % above 100%, like some say 150% effort) to make this a super experience. I highly recommend you to take this voyage. The ship may be old, but it is super clean, actually looking brand new, the crew excellent. Read Less

We took parents on the cruise who are 85 and 86 and they enjoyed many aspects of the cruise. For us younger folks this was a bit of a burden because people in their 80's require constant attention like children and teens do. For the seniors in our group there were many activities they could sit nearby and watch, and a few they participate in. The restaurant service was good for the group with many different choices of food. We did not like the under cooked scrambled eggs served for breakfast. Under cooked eggs is very unhealthy for persons of every age so who ever thinks its a good idea to serve under cooked scrambled eggs is a IDIOT! Another thing that could have been much better on the cruise was the comedy entertainment. The singers and dancers had 2 performances [2 different nights] and were great. On 2 other cruise nights we have comedy performers, one on each night and they both SUCKED. In cases like this I think Royal Caribbean would be better off showing a hour of 3 Stooges shorts and some Bugs Bunny, Road Runner & Daffy Duck cartoons. During the boarding we could get 2 wheel chairs and 2 people to help our 80 something parents get on board and to their state room. For the departure this was not possible for reasons that are not clear to us. Also the night before departure a key member of group fell asleep early so we did not prepare suitcases for pickup. There fore on the departure morning my wife and I had to guide 2 seniors, and bring all our luggage down from level 8. It seemed like no one had any sympathy for us as my wife and I dragged 2 80-somethings down from deck 8 with 4 heavy suitcases and carry on luggage. So therefore we will not plan a future cruise with Royal Caribbean for the foreseeable future. Read Less

Then I have to share my appreciation of my stateroom agent and my waiters, these guys made my wife and I feel extremely welcomed. They were nothing less than a class act. The entertainment on board ship was awesome. Professional entertainers with a host of skills and routines that appeared to be straight from Broadway. The excursions really pulled you into the overall experience of cruising and taking advantage of the port of calls....to take it all in based on whatever activities were made available. Yes, it is the smallest and oldest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet but I enjoyed it in very much. The crowds were small, it was easy to get from one area to the next. The food, entertainment and staff were all very good. I didn't feel the ship was dated at all, the common areas were clean and modern. They shows were great, and the atmosphere was very energetic. It was a very good price for an ocean view cabin, so no complaints there. Had wonderful cabin attendant, Vera. However, the ship is very old and tired. Way too much rust and must be a nightmare for maintenance. Everything is either worn out or broken. The size of the ship is wonderful for those who dislike walking long distances and long lines. The staircases are open and easy to climb. They are almost spiraled and give you and open feeling. If RCCL wants to keep the Empress, they should follow Carnival's example with the Sunshine (formerly the Celebration). If it were refurbished in a similar radical manner, we'd go again, but not in its present condition. The dining experience was sub par, not nearly as good as Carnival or Norwegian. Dining room waitstaff were good, but the variety and quality of the food was inconsistent, some things being very good, but most being not so good. I've had some complaints about RCCL food in general over the past few years, so wasn't expecting anything great, which is wasn't. The itinerary was perfect for us, two sea days plus Key West (our favorite) and Cozumel (ok). Entertainment was pretty good but the cruise director was annoying. Check in staff were very nice and getting off the ship was pretty easy. Read Less

Chose this cruise because previous Royal Caribbean cruises had been very wheelchair accessible. This one was not. There was no deck where I could get out from the interior to the outside on my own and no deck where I could get in from the outside to the interior. Because of the high thresholds and heavy doors, even with my wife helping me, we had to recruit another guest or crew member to hold the door open so we could go up and over and then down the high thresholds. Tables in the Windjammer restaurant were not very wheelchair accessible. The crew in the main dining room must have been rookies. Even though they were mostly Indian and should have spoken English well, they often got orders mixed up. One guest at our table would always ask for no potatoes and substitute with a different vegetable, but she still got patatoes and no substitute vegetables. Other crew members in the Windjammer would leave their trash carts right next to the table where we were eating. Read Less

We booked this cruise last minute via the RCL website. We wanted a short cruise and had positive experience on our past cruises with RCL. Unfortunately, the cruise was not at all what we expected. To begin with, the check-in process at the pier took well over 30 minutes, there were 5 counters opened to serve the 200+ regular guests (those that did not have priority check-in ). When we finally made it on to the ship, we were surprised at the lack of customer service we received. Friendly smiles were few and far and only appeared when one was making direct eye contact. A large majority of the staff appeared tired and disengaged. and The food at the Windjammer was pretty much the same from day one with 2-3 dishes that were new each day. Overall , good value for money if you book it last minute with a deal. Read Less

Crew were very attentive to the the needs of handicapped. They pushed the wheelchair whenever needed and to help in seating at dining. Our rooms were clean and ready when we returned from dining in the morning. The view of the ocean in the smaller ship from the dining room windows is amazing. The food was everything we had heard from friends who had cruised Royal Caribbean...excellent! both in the dining room and in the Windjammer dining room. It had only one small pool which we all got chance to use now and again, but three hot tubs which our children and grandchildren used every day through out each day. They kept the tubs and pool scrubbed and clean each day, and changed the pool water out each day. Loved the Junkano beach stop where we swam in the ocean. In all a wonderful experience, would love to do it again! Read Less

Awesome experience. Had a good time as it was my first cruise. Service was excellent. Did all the homework on how to go around Cozumel and Key West which made me easy to move around without any experience. People in Cozumel as so friendly and gave a good direction to move around. No Spanish No Problem you can pretty much understand and convey what you need. Key west was awesome too most of the place is just a walk away. I wish we had more activities for kids which seems to be less. Good entertainment had lot of fun after 7:00 pm. Embarkation and Disembarkation was simple and easy most of the staff and friendly and quick. Food was excellent along with service. We definitely would do it again in future. Planning to go again next year for sure. A good time we spent with the family together most of the time. Read Less

Housekeeping - 3 stars. Good but not great. Always stray hairs in towels or bedding. Main Dining (starlight) for Dinner and breakfast - awful experience. staff only did one job and would not complete any requests that went outside their normal duties. for example, the drink lady will only bring drinks and if asked for a new fork or napkin, the request would kindly be accepted but it would never be fulfilled. oftentimes never to see that same person again. Orders were messed up several times. at least 1 - 3 mistakes made or requests ignored per day. Getting drinks / refills was impossible. Shows were excellent, fun experience. Professional acts and experienced dancers and comedians. Bar service was excellent, fast, and delicious. The overall appearance and feel of the cruise ship was excellent and eye-catching. It is a very small ship but it was not over crowded. Read Less
