What happens if your cruise never starts due to flooding or low water? Did you read the small print in your contract BEFORE you paid up? Are the crew actually employees of Emerald with decision making powers, or are they contracted staff "who need to wait for the office to open." If you are elderly or disabled how will you cope with an 800 km bus trip instead? And No, your travel insurance will NOT cover you if you "fail to sail"! The BBC's World Weather forecast on Thursday 30 April 2015, two days prior to our cruise, warned of further, very heavy rain for Switzerland on that Thursday/Friday night, a slight respite on Saturday followed by another very heavy belt of rain along with rising temperatures causing faster snow melt. They also forecast "a real risk of flooding." In fact roads were closed, some villages isolated and the police were out with loudhailers. Basel docking for cruise boats was underwater. That was before our non cruise started! And the forecasters were right! The water level in Basel rose from 550 cms on Thursday to 830 cms by Monday 4th May. Importantly, our boat had not managed to complete its previous leg and could not even get under the bridge into Basel. The day before our cruise was due to commence the Emerald Sky was moored up - NOT ON THE RHINE - but on the Grand Canal d'Alsace where it remained stuck for 6 days. Unwarned and unprepared for what lay ahead, we arrived in Basel and were bussed to a section of the canal in the middle of nowhere. During the night the Emerald Sky moved a short distance down the Canal to Breisach from where we could see the Viking boats parallel to us but on the Rhine until they managed to sail on! For the next 3 days a bus programme was instigated and a tantalising possibility was held before our noses that the Sky "might sail in which case the bus will take you to the new mooring!" Obviously, this was tosh. The rainwater had to drain somewhere and that 'somewhere' was the Rhine whose force was too great to open the Canal lock gates. Plainly, after going nowhere for 4 days, it would be impossible for the Emerald Sky to catch up on its schedule, let alone reach Amsterdam without going full pelt and non stop. Suddenly, after dinner at 9 pm on Tuesday evening we were told to 1) to pay all our bar bills immediately 2) to pack our suitcases and leave them outside our cabins by 6 am and 3) to vacate the boat by 7 am to begin days of long bus journeys and packing/unpacking each day. Not one person from the Emerald Office in Switzerland, even though one was promised and we were only 30 miles away, came to speak to the passengers or help the poor beleaguered cruise director (on a short term contract) to organise help for people in wheelchairs or flights for those who couldn't face hours of lengthy bus trips etc. So my point is this. If bad weather strikes AFTER the cruise begins, well it's "force majeure" and certainly not the cruise company's fault, although you should expect upfront honesty. However, in this case, the cards were well and truly stacked against the cruise even starting. The demographic of a river cruise will often contain a small number of immobile passengers who want to enjoy the company of their family and friends and are prepared to remain on board and enjoy the views and facilities while the others go on trips. Emerald should have warned us on that first day that they were moored on a canal, might be stuck there for several days (for goodness sake, the Rhine is a major waterway with plenty of technical forecasting) and if unlucky, they may have to turn the cruise into a bus tour. They should have given the passengers options of a refund or another cruise on that first day. In similar circumstances Tauck offer a total refund, Viking on the other hand offered a total refund or a 50% voucher for those who were prepared to take their chances (google lemons into lemonade Viking Rhone.) Emerald offered a measly £500 of vouchers to use on a future cruise with them one month after our return. No thanks. How good will your cruise company be if things go wrong? The ship, the crew, the food, the cabins were all fine. The backroom people let them down. It could have been great. Read Less

Just back form a 7 night Danube cruise from Nurenburg to beautiful Budapest on Emerals Sun, what a fantastic week, each and everyone of the crew were brilliant from Georgina our cabin stewardess to Robert our waiter in the dining room and Olga in the lounge bar though every crew member made sure we wanted for nothing. Simona the Cruise Director made sure that all the excursions ran smoothly and pick ups and drop offs were exactly as planned, a hard job logistically. What a beautiful ship with fantastic food. The excursions were great with very frinedly, knowledgeable tour guides, especially Eva who was our guide for the Slazburg tour, she had us all singing the songs from Sound of Music, not everyones cup of tea but it just seemed appropriate when we were in he locations were it was filmed. I will definately be back on an Emerald river cruise and would highly recommend them to all my family and friends, if you haven't tried it then I would say you are missing out on a wonderful cruise. This was our 3rd river cruise but our 1st with Emerald. The ship was changed pretty much last minute but it was identical to the 1 we were originally on so no negative impact. We flew into Budapest, got to the luggage carousel to be greeted by 3 Emerald representatives. They were very well organised and had us on the bus in minutes...an excellent start. On arrival at the ship we given a warm welcome, checked in quickly and escorted to our cabin and given a quick tour of it. We were on the upper deck and had a panorama balcony....which meant the top half of the window retracted, a very good idea and we used it quite a lot over the week. The cabin was lovely and much larger than we were expecting. We had the bed configured as a double and it might have been a bit tighter as twins. Modern, clean, great shower, plenty of toiletries, 6 large, deep drawers. Not a lot of hanging space due to the safe and minibar but there was enough for us. We liked the bathrobes and slippers too. 1 major plus for me was the hairdryer....it was actually a fully functioning, fit for purpose hairdryer....and after years of traveling worldwide a usable hairdryer is rare ...10 out of 10! We went along to the dining room for the light lunch. Food was the only thing on the whole cruise that disappointed us. It was served lukewarm most of the time. Breakfast was fine but lunch and dinner were pretty awful. The lack of choice when it came to meat dishes was a problem most days. We think we are very easily pleased with food but this cruise proved that perhaps we aren't. Service at dinner was slow and the whole dining system seemed very disorganised and badly managed. Help yourself tea and coffee all day was of a good quality. The tours at every place we stopped were all good with good guides and just the right length of time. Our tour for tea with a local family from Bratislava was wonderful.....they made wine and were happy to share it We only did 1 optional tour which was the classical concert in Vienna...that was wonderful too...excellent quality. All the staff we found to be helpful, friendly and tried to make the cruise a good experience. Very little evening entertainment....a dance troupe in Budapest was nice as was the Ummpah Band in Regensberg. 2 other nights Simona arranged some fun competitions which most folks entered into. The other nights we had a dour pianist. The most amazing person was our cruise director Simona...she was absolutely brilliant. We never saw her without a smile on her face and everything was organised, buses arrived on time and got back on time...she was just wonderful. The other guests were mainly from the UK, a few USA and Canadians. This was the first cruise on the Danube of the season so perhaps the food issues we had will be ironed out. On departure everything went as smoothly as our arrival. Would we cruise Emerald again? If someone assured us that the food would be superior to what we experienced on this cruise then Yes....as everything else exceeded expectation. It was a shame that something so easily rectified marred our experience. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I particularly wished to visit Heidleburg and I had heard people talk about the scenery on the River Rhine . River cruises tend to have fewer passengers on board and this was the case on Emerald Star. All passengers received good attention and I was especially pleased the way the staff assisted people with disabilities. There was plenty of space on board. The only time a lot of passengers came together was at Evening Dinner. The table service was great and the menus catered for most tastes. If you were not happy with the selection for the day. The staff would help to find you an alternative. The food was excellent for all the on board meals - breakfast, lunch and Evening Dinner. Breakfast and Lunch were al frescoe, one chose whatever one wanted from the central buffett bar. Everywhere was very clean and hygienic. One of the big pluses for me was the drink machine in the Reflections Lounge. This was constantly in Service and it was wonderful to be able to get a choice of hot drinks whenever one wanted. My only issue with my beautiful, comfortable cabin was the fact that there was NO READING LAMP by the bed head. I hope Emerald Waterways can rectify this for the single cabins. The shore excursions were well organised and most enjoyable. Read Less

Having previously tried a river cruise for the first time last year on the Danube with Emerald Waterways and being so impressed we decided to go again and they were our first choice as having been in sales all my life I was so impressed with every aspect... their marketing, customer service is by far and above the best we have experienced and we have cruised and holiday with many of the leading names in the industry... Gifts of quality branded backpacks each along with your tickets & itinerary and even a complimentary afternoon at a concert in the top venue in Manchester early in the January this year ensures they demonstrates how much they value their guests and don't forget them. We joined the Emerald Star in Amsterdam and were delighted to find the same Cruise Director Patricia who is a fantastic person and makes all guests part of the Emerald family. Every member from the Captain down, go the extra mile to ensure your experience with Emerald is the best memories you can enjoy long after you return home. Food is freshly served on every occasion and of an extremely high standard & variety by some great waiters and chefs... special thanks to Sinton & Jumadi who were great characters and the bar staff with the lovely Vladimira all ensure every service was very professional. To Captain Vasyl Marichanu, Cruise Director Patricia, Chef Migh Hi (Sorry about any name spelling errors) & all the Emerald Star staff a BIG, BIG "THANK YOU" from us both... Howard & Lilian Read Less

As regular ocean cruisers we decided to try something different. We were not disappointed - this Danube, Mainz, Rhine cruise ticked all the boxes for a small ship. Great food, interesting mix of people and very efficient crew. One of the highlights was a tour of the galley which was something of an eye-opener. How five crew members worked in such a confined space producing such excellent food was a miracle! All the tours were efficiently organised and the innovative communication system recently introduced worked extremely well - all the guides raved about it! Destinations were all well worth the visit with usually sufficient free time to explore. The 'extra' tours/trips which included a visit to the Schonbrun Palace and a private concert in Vienna were excellent. Richard Grey the Tour Director was the best we had ever encountered on any of our previous ocean cruises. The only downside to the whole trip was the mayhem at Heathrow which would probably put us off from doing a similar holiday again unless Eurostar was an option. Otherwise, a most enjoyable two weeks which probably surpassed our expectations. Read Less

This was a first time experience doing a river cruise, normally we do the big ships.so off we set.arrived in Amsterdam after a bit of fun trying to find the agent from the ship we all get on the couch ,arrived at the port, ship looked magnificent,so easy to get on Sky,refreshing drink and towel was presented, nice touch. We were in our cabin within 15 minutes and luggage almost behind us,that's impressive. Unpacked ,plenty of space for all the clothes and shoes do look in the bathroom there's 2 hidden cupboards behind the mirror smart. Then it was time to explore what we saw was a clean tidy ship, staff very very friendly always asking if every thing was ok or order a drink. We opted for the premium drinks package very nice. The only real big let down was the food ,I'm not a fussy eater at breakfast bacon burnt ,a fairly good selection, but boring, lunch some food tepid again boring.dinner ,what planet did that chef come from.some weird and wonderful mixtures he produced. The entertainment was ok,nothing to write home about.excursions superb there was 2 types fast pace or meander speed,we did both meander was perfect,a nice steady pace ,saw a lot of things, really good.Would we go again, yes,I think next time Portugal. This was our first time trying this type of break, extremely lucky to be on a brand new ship the Liberte and on it's maiden voyage. Fantastic experience, visited different towns each day and received first class service from everyone involved. I could not recommend this highly enough, if you are into photography or architecture this is right up your street or in this case river. We went with no expectations and were blown away by the ship, food and all round service, no hiccups at all during booking and travel to meet the ship and return home, first class throughout the complete process. Food, cabins, drinks and weather all excellent, what more can you ask for, we are already in process of booking for next year. The staff were absolutely fantastic and really made the overall experience feel special and cannot praise them highly enough. All in all a special experience which will stay with us forever, just fantastic. Read Less

This was our second cruise with Emerald and we were not disappointed. The welcome was really good and our cabin spotless. It was cleaned thoroughly every day with fresh towels. All the crew were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for them. They always had time to pass the time of day and enquire about your well being. Our cruise director was excellent. We had superb meals with lots of choice and variety and the drinks package we had taken out proved to be worthwhile. The excursions were interesting and we were lucky to have good guides. Evening entertainment was good and other activities were available like bike rides if you wished. The small swimming pool is a definite bonus too. We met some great people whose company we really enjoyed. All in all a fabulous week. We will definitely book with Emerald again and would recommend it unreservedly. Read Less

We chose this for its destinations, as it was along the lower reaches of the Danube, which we didn't know. Embarkation was very smooth, though it was a pity there wasn't more time in Budapest. The cruise was full of interesting trips, including visits to a school in Bulgaria, and a lunch with a local family in Croatia. All of the local guides were experienced, very knowledgeable, and spoke good English. The Cruise Director also gave us interesting daily talks on the countries we were visiting. On two evenings we had excellent local dancers/singers on board. Everybody I spoke to enjoyed the cruise very much; the ship is lovely, with good size cabins and lounge, and the food reflected the countries we were visiting. The service was excellent, and the staff (mainly East European) friendly, relaxed and efficient. There is an attractive indoor swimming pool, and a minute fitness room. WE did feel that during the one day with no port stop there could have been more activities arranged, especially as it rained solidly all day.We finished with 3 nights in the Sheraton in Bucharest, which is a stunning city. We mainly found our own meals in Bucharest, but we did feel that more could have been made of the final night's dinner, which was uninspiring and a big contrast to the excellent on-board meals. We certainly plan to travel again with this company, and would recommend this particular cruise as something a bit different. Read Less

My wife did extensive research with emerald and several other cruise companies and found that emerald was closest to our ideal , the frosting on the cake was that all tips and taxes were included. The flights arranged and meeting at airport efficient and easy . Coach ready and then our luggage was taken care of and next saw them in our cabin. Same on homeward journey arrangements transfer and Ie plane boarding check in all handled efficiently. Biggest praise was for the staff and crew. All were always cheerful and pro active in their approach. Efficient, rembering our names , polite friendly service was smooth but not intrusive. Cruise director Nina van Loon very personable and helpful interesting talks and info. And shore excursions well balanced for all age types and plenty of free exploring or resting time, excellent choice of locations. Boat was smooth and quiet and well maintained could hardly feel any motion. All in all we are sold on river cruising and particularly Emerald and look forward to booking with them again. Read Less

We chose this cruise because I have always wanted to see the tulips at Keukenhof Gardens and what a display they have, not just of tulips but all the flowers are just so wonderful and you just cannot believe the colours and the size of them. The orchid house was so so beautiful, you could just be in that for hours let alone walking round the outside. A must if you really like your garden and flowers, cannot wait to get the tulips I ordered in October and plant them in my own garden to remember the gardens. Also Amsterdam and Antwerp are cities we had not visited so it was a good chance to explore them also, plus the excursions all sounded so interesting and were. Arnhem where we visited the Airborne Museum which is dedicated to the battle of Arnhem in 1944 was so good plus the war cemetery, was very moving. It was a busy 7 days but we so enjoyed it plus meeting new people most in our age group was great. All service, food and staff are wonderful a friendly smile no matter what time of day it is. We really hope to book and go on another one next year making it our 3rd with Emerald , really nothing is to much trouble for them. Read Less

Our second trip with Emerald - we enjoyed the Danube cruise last year, oddly on the same ship, captain and some of the crew! I can't recommend Emerald enough! Immaculately clean, comfortable accommodation. The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. The food was excellent - we even had a tour of the galley! Breakfast and lunch are buffet style with an amazing range of dishes available. The evening meal has table service and a menu with a choice of about 3 starters, soups, 3 main courses (although steak, salmon etc also available) then 3 desserts. Each day there is a Chef's Choice menu which we tended to pick each day. Excursions were very good with excellent, amusing well informed guides. My only slight negative is one I should have realised! The ship had a long distance to cover and so there did seem to be a lot of time to enjoy the scenery from a comfortable chair or the sun deck where I would have preferred to be a bit more active. We unreservedly recommend Emerald Waterways. Read Less

It was very informative and the ship, staff, food and facilities onboard were excellent. The gym and pool I used a lot and the talk/ slide show by the cruise director was very good. All local guides were very well informed and I enjoyed all the meals onboard. Having bikes available to use was a bonus. We had lovely weather which helped. A GPS tracking system showing where the ship was at any tome would be a very good addition, however we were given complimentary guide books and river maps which was a nice touch. I would definitely recommend this cruise to friends who wanted to visit eastern Europe on a travelling hotel! Read Less

It fitted our timetable, and we had not experienced the Douro before. The travel brochure promised a wonderful river cruise experience. We expected Local/Regional cuisine served on board-especially fresh fish; however we were disappointed. We were also expecting more wine tasting. Prior to start of the cruise, the travel documents arrived late and it was difficult to contact the Customer Services. The promised second back pack never arrived. Although we were told that complementary wine, beer and soft drinks would be served during lunch and dinner, we were refused drinks during lunch on final day, 20th May. The evening entertainment consisted mainly of piano music and an occasional quiz. The staff were polite, friendly and attentive and worked well together. The food at dinner time was slow to arrive, and not piping hot. The barbecue was a success and enjoyed by all. Please note we boarded and disembarked the boat on the Douro river at Porto. Read Less

Clean and bright ship, friendly and caring crew with a very competent Captain. Quality of meat and hotness of food in the restaurant could be improved. Tepid scrambled eggs are not nice! Meat was often tough. The efficiency of delivery of the evening meal needs to be smarter as there is a long delay in receiving the food after the taking of the order. Doesn't need to be served at speed but there is a happy medium. It was obviously a first time cruise together for the staff, they do need to improve their efficiency and delivery of information to guests. Some staff are more experienced than others however and they compensated for those who were inexperienced. Crew should endeavour to be quieter during the night time hours as there seemed to be constant moving about on the ship both on the out side top deck and inside the ship. Read Less

We chose this ship/cruise because we had sailed with Emerald 2 years ago from Bucharest to Budapest. I like the lines of the Emerald ships. They are sleek and clean-looking. The staff are welcoming, courteous and accommodating. Housekeeping is generally good with clean cabins and bathrooms. The trips were very well organised and interesting. If I could change anything about the itinerary I would have dropped the Volendam/Edam trip and replaced it with a full day in Amsterdam. We had only one half day in Amsterdam which is not really an adequate time for exploring and visiting the Rijksmuseum, for instance. Also the trip to the cheese factory, the day before, was a wasted morning. Most British passengers are not interested in watching cheese being made. We do make our own cheeses in Britain. Compared with our previous Eastern European cruise the food on this trip was not truthfully as good. The portions were tiny, not that I want huge portions. The fish for the main courses was pre-frozen and then cooked for dinner, and should really have been returned to the kitchen. The final dinner, the Chateau-Briand, was however, excellent as were the lunch time salads - superb. Timings and organisation to and from the airport were excellent. The Tour Director was informative and competent. The spoken English of a couple of the guides was difficult to understand. It was a nice touch when the Captain came to each bus on departure to say "Good bye" and to shake hands with all of us. Read Less

We decided to do this cruise as a change from our normal sea cruises and not having been in the area before it proved to be a perfect choice. The Emerald Sky has a really happy atmosphere and we enjoyed every moment of the trip from Amsterdam to Basel The cruise director Darren made every effort to explain the following days itinerary and always made everyone laugh by telling one of his jokes or poems before we went to dinner. . He did a fabulous job as did everyone else onboard. The Captain was always there to wish you a good trip and again to welcome you back onboard which we thought was a nice touch. The tour guides were all very knowledgeable and gave you all the relevant facts without bombarding you with too many dates etc. There were a couple of special guest entertainers and the violinist who came onboard as we sailed down the middle Rhine area was fantastic. Normal entertainment was provided by a pianist who also proved to be a great DJ putting on a couple of lively disco nights. All in all a great cruise when we met lovely people who all added to the enjoyment of the holiday. Read Less
