MSC Seaside

MSC Seaside - MSC Cruises

Pros

Ample outdoor space draws passengers outside to enjoy the ship's Caribbean surroundings

Cons

With so many areas dedicated to the outdoors, interior public areas can feel crowded during inclement weather

Bottom Line

This bright, elegant and technologically advanced ship is great for North Americans

I have sailed with several American cruise lines and was interested in trying MSC. Let’s just say that I should have listened to the reviews of other Americans who similarly had cruised other lines and warned about the negative aspects of MSC. Let’s start with the pros: well organized for embarkation and disembarkation. Like a well oiled machine!!! Smooth and seemless from start to finish. Technology on board, great and convenient. The ship itself, beautiful with tons of space and amenities for fun. The entertainment shows were amazing and beautifully choreographed. Cleanliness, top notch. Workers constantly wiping, vacuuming and cleaning every aspect of the ship. The negatives: lackluster excursions at almost triple the cost of booking independently at port. Limited staff availability to assist you when needed, many calls to reception went unanswered and if you need tech support for use of the app while onboard, plan on waiting over an hour for help. The staff are not the least bit warm and fuzzy or even the tab bit enthusiastic like on American cruise lines. The music on deck was either nonexistent or elevator type, with no energy and excitement of a vacay. The required need for a room card to activate electricity in the room is ridiculous. You can’t leave your phone to charge in the room if you take your room card with you. The activities like Kareoke and live music are often in other languages other than English. As an American, you will be the minority on the ship. When you find other Americans like we did, it was like finding a prize. And last but not least, the food is HORRENDOUS! Absolutely appalling. Items are repeated morning, noon and night. The food is bland, flavorless, not kept at appropriate temps, and plain disgusting. No creativity, no appeal, and repulsing. Cesar salad is warm time and time again, burgers are cold, scrambled eggs are watery like soup, etc etc. day after day. Food options at port were our only saving grace as all 5 of us dreaded eating on board. There was NOTHING positive about the food.... not one!! And none of us are picky eaters. The food is designed for the European in mind. Many breads, smelly cheeses, cold cuts, and antipasto. Even items like pizza were over cooked, flavorless and not edible. They would re-invent items from lunch to dinner by adding one additional ingredient to it and renaming it. It is basically the same disgusting item. Over and over and over again. Read Less

After cruising several times on the same brand ship we decided to venture out and try a new brand. We found MSC and saw where they do loyalty match so we started researching them. We decided on the Seaside out of Miami and booked our cruise. The day we embarked we noticed a much quicker process and loved it. Their customer service center was huge and quick. Once on board the hype was all true...this ship was gorgeous. I was definitely not disappointed. I quickly realized there wasn’t a hole punched in my room card and thought how will I wear this on my lanyard? To my great surprise they offered wristbands to wear that did all the functions of your room card. My favorite part was no one hardly wore their cards around their neck to prove status or feel privileged in some way. I was worried about the food since I personally am a picky eater, but I found plenty to eat and was never hungry. The ship was always clean and the staff was friendly. We had the privilege of meeting the captain and I must say he was amazing. He had a great personality and humor. We saw him walking on the ship one day with another officer so we didn’t even try to bother him and he stopped and spoke to us like we were family. Now the shows. I loved everyone of the shows on this ship and can honestly say all of the performers were great and you could see how they got their job. It really made the other brands shows look like amateur hour. I am so glad we tried this ship and have booked another cruise on MSC on the Magnifica. We had another cruise booked on the other brand ship and have decided to loose the deposit and cruise with MSC. Read Less

Pros: Crew members - always friendly and helpful. Our room steward, Christian, went beyond normal. Some crew members gave us free drinks or moved us to the front of the line without us requesting the favors. Cleanliness of ship (with the exception of plates in the hallway for over a day) Cabin Entertainment (except as noted below) We met some very nice people (expecially at the Meet & Greet) Cruise Critic Meet & Greet was our first and an unexpected joy Balcony experience Things not outstanding: Food (both MDR and buffet) 360 degree tour of St. Maarten (about half of it was disappointing) Cons: Does not really cater to the American market Embarkation was my worst ever Disembarkation (self-disembarkation) was my worst ever Comedy improv show stunk; almost just left Some overseas passengers think nothing of cutting in front of you Some overseas passengers think nothing of bumping you around Read Less
