Celebrity Summit

Celebrity Summit - Celebrity Cruises

Pros

Smaller size means consistent service; heavy emphasis on food and wine, with good results.

Cons

Nighttime entertainment is hit or miss, with some live music shows more snooze fest than snappy.

Bottom Line

The ship presents some of the best features of Celebrity, without being too overwhelming.

We chose this cruise because we wanted to go to Bermuda and this ship sailed from New Jersey, allowing us to drive to the port instead of flying. Embarkation was efficient. The ship is very bright and modern which we liked. We had an Aqua class cabin which allowed us to use the spa and dine in the special Aqua dining room, Blu. We did not use the spa but ate almost exclusively in Blu. Service and food were definitely worth the Aqua class surcharge. We usually sail Norwegian and found the food better on Celebrity, especially the buffet. Buffet pizza was excellent and there was wait staff serving beer, cocktails, etc in the buffet. We were sailing during Hurricane Dorian but the Captain did an excellent job, getting us to Bermuda ahead of the storm, a half day early and sailing behind it on the way back to port. Weather was excellent so many people used the pool (not us, we are not pool people). We spent some time in the casino, typical of all cruise ship casinos. We booked a Ricky's minibus tour of Bermuda. It was excellent and $50 per person cheaper than the same excursion from Celebrity. Our one Celebrity excursion was the boat tour of Bermuda homes. Our guide, Mark, was excellent and we enjoyed a beautiful day on the water. We missed the O'Sheehan's bar/grill we've enjoyed on our Norwegian cruises. Late night dining was only available in the buffet. We also missed the cocktail lounge entertainers we've enjoyed on Norwegian: piano, some classical players, etc. We paid the upcharge for the top beverage package but found the bars and bar staff not as much fun as those on Norwegian. This is probably one of the reasons the Celebrity crowd seemed more subdued and formal. There were two nights when you could wear cocktail attire to dinner but it was not required. Read Less

We chose this ship because of the three day port stop in Bermuda. As an added bonus and due to Hurricane Dorian, we got an extra half day. Embarkation was the smoothest I have ever seen on any ship except Crystal. When our room was ready, the luggage was already waiting for us in the hallway. Well done. I really liked the ship and the public spaces. It never felt crowded, even at the buffet on the first day when we boarded. The food in the main dining room was delicious, and the service excellent. I also loved the sushi bar and Tuscan Grille. It was well worth the upcharge for Tuscan Grille. However, the three in our party had major issues with Qsine. The menu was weird, the service unusual, and they pushed and pushed food on us to the point that it was annoying. We don't like to waste food and kept politely declining additional dishes, but they didn't take no for an answer. I wouldn't bother ever returning to Qsine. The entertainment was hit or miss. The Beatles act was decent, I would say. The comedian was in the middle. We didn't attend any of the other headliner shows. The live music in the lounges was generally atrocious. While the musicians were okay, the singers could not sing at all. I found it difficult to listen to. The DJ'ed events were good, especially the silent disco, which was possibly the most fun we had on the ship. Loved the spa and fitness facilities. Had a salt scrub and also took a spin class. I wouldn't bother booking a room to get use of the Persian Garden- it was nothing to write home about. As for Bermuda, I would never have anything negative to say about it. We love this island and have been here five or six times. The only drawback is docking at King's wharf and having to wait for the ferry in the blazing sun. Not my favorite thing. I noticed that the Celebrity survey had no space for negative comments/room for improvement. So other than the ones noted above, I would like to state that I thought the photographers were beyond obnoxious. They wouldn't take no for an answer and at one point asked us if perhaps we "didn't like each other" and that was why we didn't want photos. On the fourth day we were talked into a "free" photo session in a private room the next evening. We were told to return the following night to view the proofs, which we did. Imagine our surprise when we found out that a) the pictures were in black and white and b) the lowest package price for five 8 X 10 images was $550! The purchase of all the images from the session would have set us back $2500! Yes, you read that right. So as we had declined all the other pictures, we left the ship with exactly zero pictures taken by the ship's photographers, and were extremely disappointed and even angered by this bait and switch technique. Not sure I would sail Celebrity again for this reason alone. I'm going to have to reflect on it more. We had a family veranda cabin, which I have reviewed below. I also want to comment on what a nice job they did of keeping the pool/solarium ladies' room clean. A woman was in there almost 24/7, constantly tidying up. In the evening, they moved the attendants up to the restrooms by the dining area. They did a great job. Read Less

We sailed on the Celebrity Summit from Bayonne NJ in the summer of 2018 and had such a great time we booked onboard for the summer of 2019. On both sailings the crew were attentive and entertaining. The ship had a refurbishment at the beginning of 2019 and the cabins are spectacular. They have been given a clean, contemporary look which is pleasing to the eye. This has brought the Summit cabins to a similar feel and quality of Celebrity’s newer vessels. The thing that Celebrity is known for is their food quality. The abundance and quality on this cruise was outstanding whether in the Oceanview Café (daily buffet) or in the Cosmopolitan (main dining room). Both of these venues have been refurbished and are absolutely beautiful. All areas are kept immaculately clean and food presentation is a spectacle. If you like shopping on board, you have many choices of high end shops and boutiques, all offering tax free goods. As a family we enjoy general knowledge trivia and found the entertainment staff excellent, especially Rhuss and Dominick. Stateroom attendant Ian and our waiter and asst. waiter Donovan and Darshena deserve a special mention, always giving service with a smile. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them. I had an issue with noise from crew members so I talked with the Hotel Manager Danuta and the Front Desk Manager Miguel. They both listened to my concerns and were not dismissive, rectifying the problem and checking in with me daily to make sure that I was happy! Now that’s service! Celebrity are an amazing company who truly value their guests. I use the word guests, as that is how you are made to feel. An outstanding experience. Read Less
