We boarded and informed the ship had only one engine. This was replaced 12 days into our cruise. This meant we were unloaded and loaded at small jetties spent hours on coaches and less time at our destinations. A lock broke near Frankfurt which put us back another 12 hours. The ship is not fit for purpose. The toilet system broke down 3 times. Internet very bad reception. T V was in German had not been switched to a English satellite. The food was O K but deserts terrible. Coffee in the restaurant to strong and cold complained to the Hotel Manager but no improvement. Staff in restaurant needed training not serving ladies first, reaching across to deliver or pick up plates. The temperature control in our cabins did not work. We some times had to endure unpleasant smells when docked closed to other ships. The ship needed net curtains to most cabins for privacy when in port or docked next to another ship. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was good value at Xmas. Everywhere was festively and attractively decorated. The staff were welcoming and helpful. The food was plentiful and well served. ( it can get busy in the buffet restaurant at peak times. The entertainers were young and personable and the shows were colouful with good dancing routines and songs. There were several knowledgeable speakers who were interesting to listen to during our many sea days. There was a range of daily physical activities and quizzes. There is a small spa area on deck 2 with heated tiled loungers and a steam room. It was too chilly to use the pool but people used the open decked loungers whenever they saw some sun. There were even some open air bbqs on deck. The itinerary was good but disrupted by the cancellation of Gibraltar ( propeller damage from a German pilot on the previous cruise) and the rough seas when at anchor in Funchal. It was disappointing to have to leave Amsterdam at 3 .30 just when the Xmas lights were beginning to shine especially as we had 5 sea days following that port. There were lots tours to select from and some presentations given beforehand. In order to keep costs down we were independent travellers in Funchal, and Lisbon. There was an excellent walking tour with a local guide in Amsterdam. My main issue was the daily Captain’s lunchtime info giving was very difficult to understand because of the language accent and the real lack of communication and leadership when 650 cruise passengers were stranded on the quay at Lisbon when the ship tenders could not attach themselves to the ship in rough seas. People spent hours in the wet, cold and dark either standing on the quayside or huddled in the bouncing tenders really anxious about how they could returnto the ship. The crew were excellent in catching the passengers thrown individually from their tenders but there was a real danger of sickness and injury. Some passengers did not manage to return til very late and the crew had the tricky task of reattaching tenders after midnight in strong winds. A real damper on what was a formal dinner and midnight fireworks in the bay. Read Less

We actually had a wonderful time on this 37 day Cruise. The ship itself was wonderful, and the staff that "waited" on us cannot ever be faulted. The problems seem to be on the small "issues". They all got the hard stuff right, but failed on the smaller "issues". We had been on this same ship in June 2018 doing the round UK Cruise. So coming back in December of the same year it was easy to see that the whole crew had changed. It was so obvious that the waiters hadn't had any training at all - they were "all at sea" so to speak. As time went along, they gained confidence, and all went well. But should this have happened at all? I would say that the major failing was the "Entertainment". Most people seem to agree that the singers and dancers (and the band), that performed in the main Theatre were good. There was a problem in that the sound guy (a Chinese looking guy with a Bart haircut) had failed to check the "sound" in areas other than his sound desk. A minor problem? Maybe he should have checked the "sound" downstairs. I'm not a sound engineer myself, but would have thought that that was a basic thing to check. There were a few "parties" on deck 10. Well they were just Discos really. The first one was an absolute abomination! Ear splitting rap music! I was around when the Pop group Slade used to play - they were renowned for their volume! This was far louder than anything that they ever did! It really was ear damaging. Bearing in mind that the average age of people here was around 70 years of age, please tell me how this could ever be considered to be appropriate? I think that there must have been many complaints - the "parties" after this did actually reflect the age of the audience. However - it was noticeable that the volume of the music apparently automatically went higher after midnight. We had a Spanish man named David. He, I guess, chose the music, the volumes and everything. He did a Zumba class on the deck. Well Zumba is an exercise prog to music - it is never dancing! He chose to interrupt every "party" with his Zumba. This includes ear splitting Rap music. I once heard a mad complain about him - David just replied "Go back to your cabin and enjoy your Cruise" I can't comment too much on The Captains Club, because we spent little time there, However, there was a duo that performed most nights - they never got even close to singing in tune, They were absolutely dreadful. Was David responsible for this? I did once walk past the Captains Club and thought that they were doing Mr and Mrs - omg. I must say that in the Taverners Bar a guy named Hernon played fantastic music every night. What a talented guy he was. From Argentina I believe. Probably the best entertainment came from the Hamptons Bar. A pianist and a violin player - three 40 minute spots, every night. Full marks from me. Ok. On to the food. Mmm How to do this to be fair? How hard is it to get the plates warm? The water cold? Breakfast - well what more could anyone want? Cooked breakfast, fruit, cold continental stuff, a guy cooking you your eggs however you want them, omelettes cooked to whatever you want...., anything really. Afternoon Tea - cream teas, sandwiches, cakes, rolls .... Beautiful - just as an aside I eat a Ham and Asparagus roll which was exquisite - I still remember it. Now comes the problem. Lunch and Dinner. Lunch was ok as it did come with some surprises. Fish and Chips? There was always the Grill outside that provided Burgers and Hot Dogs and chips. So you could always get your chips from the grill, come inside the Bistro and garnish it with a lamb chop or something. Dinner became so repetitive. Soup - always excellent quality Pasta - I gave up on that - poorly cooked. Fish - Pan fried Perch, Pan fried Snapper, Pan fried Sword Fish ...... not for me Then a concoction every night of veal or venison or beef or lamb .... So I can't say that the food was poor. But I can say that I simply got bored with it. Overall it was a great time and I loved every minute of it. Just those few "buts". Read Less

We chose this ship as we had only sailed with CMV once and that on the Marco Polo, we were interested to see if they could replicate the level of service enjoyed on The Marco Polo on the Columbus. What was provided was not the Glitz and Razamataz of some of the modern ships but more of the old time glamour and comfort. They had bars and drinking areas to suit all, from the boisterous to the quiet and relaxing. The food from the buffet to the formal dining rooms was some of the best that we have had on something like sixteen different cruises. The level of cleanliness throughout the ship was something to behold, at busy times they even had full time cleaners stationed in the toilets. On the entertainment front the dancers were outstanding as were the resident singers, unfortunately the specialist acts who were Comedians from a bye gone day on TV did not appeal to us although a lot of the guests enjoyed them. The Captain of the ship was a star in as much as he toured the ship at least once a day and was prepared to talk to anyone even those few who had a complaint. We enjoyed the experience that much that we have signed up for CMV 120 day world cruise on the Columbus in January 2019 Read Less

Please note that this was an german review translated with google-translator without any correction. Orginal review in german language you could find at german page holidaycheck.de Think it may be interesting to read a review from a complete other side. We are only guest...on an english ship...... What can one expect from an 8-day cruise (Lidl-Reisen) for 569 EUR in the Glücks indoor cabin? Can you book such a trip at all or should you better leave your finger off? We "dared" the attempt and embarked on a 1-week journey in early October 2018 towards Norwegian fjords from Amsterdam. The three German reviews at Holidaycheck meet the core and we can understand many points of criticism from our own experience or confirm. Apart from the 3 Holidaycheck reviews, we also have about 135 English reviews at cruisecritic. co.uk so that we roughly knew what we were going to get involved with. The CMV Columbus is an older type of vessel with very few balcony cabins, mainly outside cabins with closed windows and inside cabins. The ratio of passengers: staff is 2: 1 Who has already used the old Tui Mein Schiff 1 or Tui Mein Schiff 2 (now Herz), will find their way immediately, because the ship concept is almost identical. Who likes this concept, knows what he is getting into. Modern is different, because much has come conceptually in the years. The CMV Columbus runs for English audience, which is very old. Maids of all kinds are on the agenda, the average age of the English guests is felt at least 65 years and is apparently without limit. Everything is aligned with this audience, i. You can not expect German entertainment program and it is not offered. On the ship, it is more leisurely and quiet outside the meal times. The staff is present, always friendly, but also not overly motivated or professionally trained. On 3 days we experienced it after waiting of at least 20 minutes that we were not served, because the bar staff just overlooked us. At other bars, however, it worked quickly and smoothly. Since we only used the buffet restaurant, it could happen that our drinks were already removed by the over-motivated pickup staff while we got our dessert. Certainly isolated cases: We would describe the motley international 615 person crew as "always striving". There is certainly still room for improvement. A large part of the staff is apparently busy with cleaning tasks, the somewhere is constantly wiped and cleaned. The public areas are very clean, which also includes the public toilets. It rarely happened that not just a "cleaning devil" went in or out when you were near a toilet. Due to age, there is rust on the ship and it is only from afar a "White Lady". A lot of paint covers some things and every craftsman is happy that he does not have to sand himself down to the bottom of all the layers of paint. The ravages of time and the environmental influences gnaw on the substance. However, one does not feel really uncomfortable when you know what you are getting into. In the early evening, the German and Dutch guests a "free show program" offered, because before the dinner or the evening show you can see only Austakelte elderly ladies and gentlemen who are full of anticipation of the food or show the other audience. This is obviously the main purpose of the cruise for many older guests. We took note of it with interest, because nobody has to participate: The buffet restaurant offers at all times an almost identical food, which you have to get yourself. Incidentally, water, coffee and tea are included all day. The coffee has no pampering aroma, but is quite ok in terms of taste. A rating is always a matter of attitude: compared to my ship 1 or even 5 you can understand the negative reviews. But taking into account the travel price and that as a German here plays only an absolute supporting role among older English guests, a purely negative rating would be unfair. In our opinion therefore: satisfactory - sufficient. Eat Adapted to the English audience. Breakfast, lunch, coffee / cake, dinner (and midnight snack). In quantity more than adequate, comparable to the food of a department store canteen. Every day changing meat-fish-vegetarian dishes. Salad bar available, partly preserved partly fresh. Bread for Toothless (age-appropriate). There is no ice cream, but various sweet desserts (also warm puddings etc.). We only used the buffet restaurant (also for breakfast). Cabin We had booked an inside fortune cabin (EUR 569) and received for this price an outside cabin with porthole on the lowest person deck (4) midship. All cabins have apparently identical 17.5 square meters. The beds are narrow and relatively hard. We really liked the many storage drawers (closet). Shirts, blouses, jackets etc. can be hung very well in a kind of walk-in closet. The air conditioning is apparently centrally controlled. The mini bar was available (empty), the hair dryer we found at the end of the trip in a lower drawer, the TV was not used (as a test, we have the programs through and only discovered RTL). Overall, it was very quiet (no noise from the side cabins audible). Towels were changed daily. The bathroom area rather small, the shower relatively comfortable (size). A bit daunting was the scoured sink with white paint on the tap. Since one had the impression, it was still the Erstausstattung. Our cabin steward was very friendly and the cabin / bathroom always made a cleaned impression. Because of the washbasin one would actually have to devalue to "bad", generally a satisfactory to sufficient in view of the total price, however, it is better. Service Cabin steward 5 stars. The other staff was friendly and helpful, if not always capable. Our English is actually understandable; unfortunately not understandable enough for some. With ice / no ice seems difficult ... If one receives instead of 2 drinks only one, but in duplicate, one asks oneself already, in which language one actually ordered. The other offered services such as excursions, hairdresser or photographer we did not use. Sports We have noted the shows, but leave after the second song at the latest. In the bars there was live music (classical), which you can also listen to (even if you are not a classical fan). Rock & Pop does not exist (but you know that before), so that the music "did not bother us". With a few books in your luggage you are on the safe side :-) Trips In-house easily possible; no waiting time when leaving the ship except for Tilbury. Tips Beverage package beforehand: The 7th day is free of charge, so you have a moderate drink price for a one-week trip. When it comes to glass sizes, we sometimes wondered from which country the standard was made? However, that's all the same with a drink package (all-in). Non-alcohol beverage package also includes non-alcoholic beer. At incl. Alcohol Pact are the soft drinks included (which was not previously apparent). Hot drinks outside tea / coffee in the bistro restaurant are extra. Tips: Are included in the tour price! This regulation (comparable to Tui Mein Schiff) already applies, so that you can tip only on personal ideas (or nothing). Envelopes or prompts are none. Read Less

We boarded Columbus which looked okay in comparison to other cruises which we have been on. Fred Olsen being far superior and modern. All went well until day 4 when we were awoken by the sound of rushing water which unfortunately for us caused ourselves and 80+ other passengers to be offloaded in Bergen as our rooms were out of action. We are now back in the UK after being flown home. To CMV credit the customer service was excellent and we have been given a full refund and a discount for use in the future. Columbus is to be repaired at the end of August after her last sailings and I look forward to sailing her next year when she has been upgraded. Also the food was good and variety should suit all tastes. Bars well stocked. Cabins however haven't been updated since CMV took ownership of Columbus from P&O. Read Less

Summer cruise around the Canary Islands trying a cruise company not used before, or again. We sailed many cruises using varied cruise companies. Food not much choice poor standard. Hygiene no hand wash provided when entering self service buffet, until reported. Entertainment, only one guest artist ( comedian impressionist) appeard 3 times. Dance group do most shows, not too bad. Cruise director, magician! No personality made me feel uncomfortable with his amateurish presentation, more like a children’s entertainer. Dress code, never adhered to Formal nights people allowed in main resteraunt wearing T shirts. Dress code given on daily program no one bothered. ship is described as adult only, however children were allowed on at less than £200. No entertainment for them so they ran riot in every swimming pool much to the annoyance of older passengers wanting to swim.( jumping in pools, jumping in onto large inflatables, 12 children in jacuzzi in over 18s area. Not children’s fault no supervision from anyone. Not only annoying, but dangerous. Rude staff. Read Less

The staff were all very efficient and friendly. The cabins were spacious and the beds were extremely comfortable. The entertainment was varied and the show dancers and singers were very talented. The guest acts were also good except for the tenor who could not hold a note and was consequently flat most of the time. This view was held by all the people we spoke to. We stopped in 10 ports and all were lovely. We only did 2 ships tours, Belfast and Tresco. I had gone on line and booked a taxis that held 7 on Mull. It cost a total of £100. Our table companions came with us. Excellent taxi owner Alan. He took us to places that the ships tour couldn't get to. Tour was three and a half hours long. Don't do it on Skye. Saw this cruise in the "Daily Mail". Should have been calling at places we had not been to before. Unfortunately for us the 3 places we had wanted to see was cancelled. Four days before getting to The Scilly Isles it was announced over the loudspeaker that due to bad weather it was cancelled. Our friends should have been meeting a relative. When they spoke to the relative they were told that the sea was like a mill pond with clear blue skies and sun. Portree on the Isle of Sky also cancelled, as was Tobermory. We never heard a thing from the Captain unless it was to cancel a port of call. The food was mediocre, the service was atrocious, we used to get into the dining room for 2nd sitting at 8.30pm. We were lucky if we managed to get out for 10.50pm. 70% of the staff was so surly, A month before going on the cruise we received a letter requesting the money for the tips. We always request our tips are taken from the account as we like to tip the people who we think has given the best service. When I telephoned to query this I was told they had to have the money up front before the cruise. £14 a day tips!!!!! All in all a very disappointing cruise. I would not recommend the Columbus or Newmarket Travel. PS. Some Australian people who had done a very long cruise with them said they had many ports cancelled. Due to expensive docking fees. My first River cruise. Traveled with a group of 44 people. Ship (Bellejour/Cruce Mundo) was adequate, most of the crew was very friendly and helpful, food was okay, beverage package did not include a large selection of beer and wine. Do not book cabin 101, expected some water noise but it was very bad with a loud banging noise at the side of the ship. Thankfully we were able to move to cabin 118 which was 100% better. Cabin attendant was very good. Entertainment was a keyboard player/singer (same every night). Breakfast buffet had a good selection but the area was very small and cramped. Lunch and dinner both included a salad, soup, entree and dessert. Most of the food was good but not exceptional. Cruised from Amsterdam to Strasbourg. Visited beautiful cities and the excursions from the ship were very good. I would definitely like to do another River cruise someday, but would try a different cruise line. Read Less

Wanted to see northern lights in Iceland but was way to expensive to stay in Iceland. Cruise was a cheaper and nicer way to travel plus saw faroes, shetlands, orkneys and London as a bonus. Traveled from Canada to Amsterdam to meet cruise. So... great ship for older people, very wheelchair and handicap assessable. Crew where constantly cleaning ship to prevent outbreaks which I came across on other cruises. Crew where very friendly and food was for the most part nice. ( would definitely recommend on ship restaurants to buffet.) Breakfast at buffet was not the best. Sausages ,bacon , eggs under cooked. Tea time was very enjoyable, Cons Not a lot of stores on ship, but my husband liked that. Planned on board events could have been better organized. Could not participate in some limited person art classes as people showed up super early and sign up list was ignored. Had some price problems with new drink package but was resolved. Disembarking was messy as it bottle necked at the one exit. Pros Older people... no kids. Rooms where nice and clean. Interesting events. Reasonable price trip. Read Less

Worldcruise Amsterdam-Amsterdam early Jan.-early May 2018. What went right is too much to mention. What went wrong is too much to mention. This is sad for the staff that did their work the right way, e.g. my cabin-steward S HTIN LIN MYA from Myamar. Under the same conditions again? Hmmmmmmm. Special mentioning deserves the australian border-control. Substandard, disorganized , incompetent. On my question to this peculiar woman that this (ill)-treatment seamed inhospitable to me her initial answer was "how to they do it in you country" (sic). All passengers going ashore were kept waiting a long time for no good reason, all passengers returning were kept waiting a long time for no good reason. Clearly because i asked. Two passengers had not reported the way they wanted.... Files a complaint 12/06/18 (so 12th. of June) with the australian government/department of home affairs. In several places the border-control was ridiculous. On my question why this way, you can guess the answer: safety pfffff, the easy way out, creating anoyment. On request some additional information. The food was quite good, in seating-restaurant and buffet=restaurant. Activities were plenty, quizzes, dancing, cooking-lessons/-demonstrations, etc., presented as should be. Service in order ( at the front desk staff always smiling, confronted with an error the answer was blurry and the smile turned vague - oh well). Entertainment high level, certainly taken into account the Columbus is a small ship to today's standard, so limited possibilities on the small stage. Ship's performers were excellent, visiting performers too in most cases. Staff were attentive and suited for the job. Excursions ware sometimes very unorganized, e.g. long waiting (about 20 minutes) on the stairways, some were not to standard so money was for half returned. What bothered me was maintenance/cleaning all the time, with staircases and parts of deck closed. Avoid the easy mistakes and the "hmmmmm" will turn into "yes". So i am curieus for the upcoming reviews. Read Less

We travelled before with CMV on the Marco Polo and now we did make the trip for 75 days from Amsterdam to Hong Kong and where very satisfied over all again. The cleaning was excellent. Also the food was good most of the time. The main dishes were unfortunately often very fat. The buffet was a good alternative. There was a good choice of drinks. The information about the packages could be better. Only the all include drinking package was offered. I did find out that there were also wine beer and coffee packages. Most of the staff was very kind and help full . Also the girls at reception were very kind but they were not helpful at all. One day I asked them to find a dentist for me in the next harbour, because the internet was out again. There answer was that I had to make the phone call myself from the cabin for £7 a minute. But who should I call? A lady from the tourist office in Auckland was very helpful to find it out for me. Me be CMV can hire here. Also to other questions they were friendly and smiled all the time but did not anything to solve the problem. And this was confirmed be other passengers as well. The excursions were far overpriced. But most of them were ok. If you did complain about an excursion they tried to tell you that you were the only one who had complained, but if one insists and could prove that the whole bus was not satisfied and even the host wrote a negative report, one gets a small reduction. So look very carefully if you can make the tour on your own before booking, because cancelling is no option. The two pools are very nice to swim, and one could always find an place to sit. The gym was open very early. Most of the passengers were over 65 , but the choice of music was for teenagers and far too loud . Also in the bars in the evening the life music was too loud also , so one could not make any conversation. The cabin was ok and the service from the cabin boy was excellent. Also the air condition in the cabin was adjustable. Unfortunately the air condition in the rest of the ship was very bad. In the gym far too hot. In the theatre also too hot. In Capucino’s and the atrium freezing cold ! Disembarkation was not always very efficient. Normally excursions go first by call on a tender number, but at some places everybody was cueing to go on shore at the same time. A bloody shame was the medical centre. People were forced to have an infusion for a simple cold. If one refused to take it, they threatened that you have to leave the ship. They charged more than £ 1000 for such in infusion. Some passengers got a bill for over £ 10.000 and to pay it immediately by credit card . CMV should change this service. It looks like mafia. Never the less we go again on a long cruise with CMV next year Read Less

We were looking for a cruise around X'mas time and the New Year, so the cmv Magellan to Madeira Cape Verdes Canary Iles seemed OK. We embarked in Amsterdam and soon found out that the average age of the passengers was about 80.Lots of wheel chairs, electric scoot mobiles with beep sound signals etc. The cabin was OK and the steward was exellent. Only the airco smell in the cabin was like a smokers room that lasted for 22 days. The ship is old and very unstable it rolls fiercely in waves of only 3- 4 m. Lots of old passengers fell of stairs and in cabins. The hospital and the Servian female doctor was very busy with all the coughing guests. The pneumonia germs were spread throughout the ship by the apparently not well filtered or sanitary cleaned airco air. Twice a rescue helicopter had to collect sick passengers. The kitchen chef was Indian as well as most of the cooks. The soup was every day the same only a different name and colour. At breakfast the bacon was dried out because it was baked in the middle of the night. The entertainment girls and boys came from the former East block . The quality was below the standard one would like to experience on a X'mas cruise. The excursions were acceptable except for the waiting time for diasbled passengers that were coming while they could hardly walk up a stair. The final bill showed a creditcard charge of GBP 141 for payment of an amount of GBP 1690 , a small charge for paying by credit card we would accept but this is robbery. In short we do not recommend this ship or cruise line. Our experience with the HAL is much better. Read Less

The ship is not well mainatined and not well furnished. The German cruise directrice wa not well organized ad the whole ship was and not very empathic to us Germans. So we did not feel well. No rules and regulations are visible or exercised probably for the regular passenger. The bistro restaurant was very unhygenic, the food not very tasty. The menue in the main restaurants, regardless if breakfast, lunch or diner did not change over 4 weeks time. Some of the food was found to be not eatable. The outboard excursions were not well organized. The embarkation was extremely dangerous especially for the elderlies because all people have to queue up over several levels of the ship and there was a constant boxing and tumbling on the (slippery) stairs. Our cabin stuart was always nice, fiendly and helpful.. Coffee, tea, water and bisquits have been free of charge 24h per day. I really appreciate this. Same with sauna and steam bath. This was excellent. The general routing of the ship has alo been faboulus and very well selected. Read Less

Our dinner was served at the Waldorf restaurant, good quality food and TOP service by our waiters Ashley and Ivan. We used our breakfast at Raffels buffet restaurant, the varierty of the food was excellent. A lot of fresh fruits. Restaurant can become crouwded due to people who remain sited after they have finished their breakfast, lunch or tee due to the cold weather. Reception staff was not very friendly and lost ?? a form for a refund request on our account statement. The saying "how colder the destination the older the passengers" was correct, we felt that we (age 46 & 55) were bringing down the avarage age on board. In relation to the destination of the cruise "North Cape" we were shocked about the high number of disabled people on board. During the evacuation drill we were the only ones waiting at the lifeboats for a long time. The lifts could not handle the high amount of olderly people. Read Less

I can't really see why people are so negative about this ship... this was myself and my daughters first cruise and we enjoyed it very much... We would definitely go on this ship again... Lovely!! Our cruise (we are Dutch) with the Marco Polo was not too bad taking into account some negative reviews on this site. The ship is old and that shows. During our trips there was a lot of repairing and painting going on, restricting the available space on the decks. The itinerary is interesting but remember the Amazon is very wide so the panorama is rather boring and there are many seadays. The crew is mainly eastern european. They are in general friendly and kind but not too service orientated. Ours cruise started with the aftermath of a Noro virus and halfway there was a full power breakdown luckily on the Amazone and not on a rough open sea. The failure was blamed on incoming rainwater and that is rather alarming. PRO's: The food was good, sometimes very good. The showteam was excellent. The atmosphere among the travellers was fine WEAK's Public space limited Cabaret old fashioned Prices and quantity of drinks Dinner time available CONS's Coffee very poor, buckets of boiled water added Smoking policy very liberal and no effective control Very loud music everywhere, good if you do not like to communicate Port information insufficient Poor isolation of cabins, you can hear your neighbours talking Lots of noise from the waves Poor view from the interior Decks are not cleaned sufficiently Excursions expensive, few transfers and costly if provided   Read Less
