We booked this cruise totally for the length and the ports of call. We were not sure of the quality Marella would provide but the whole experience was much better than anticipated from some reviews. Flights arriving throughout the day which meant embarkation was staggered and went very smoothly. Cabin was available straight away and luggage arrived timely. The ship is a medium sized older ship. Well laid out, decor good and plenty of room apart from deck space which was very crowded on sea days as the cruise was fully sold. Only one outside pool. We booked the basic inside cabin on the lower decks. It was smaller than other ships we had sailed on with just enough room at the side of the bed to squeeze out into the cabin. The cabin creaked and groaned quite loudly especially in rough seas. Apart from that it was very well laid out with a small seating area, dressing table, drawers and plenty of wardrobe space, hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities. No Fridge. The bathroom was OK with shower curtain but plenty of hot water and shower gel and hand soap. Dining - Islands Buffet - even on a full ship we had no problems finding a seat. It feels very airy because of the full length surround windows. Staff were very attentive and the food was varied and hot. We ate breakfast and lunch here and enjoyed both experiences. We did try the MDR for breakfast one day - if you like a leisurely meal then this may be for you. For us, we like to be up and away there are always so many things to do so we preferred the Islands. MDR - We ate most of our evening meals here. The decor of the room is lovely with tables for 2 and more, although most of the tables for 2 are so close together you feel as if you are on a table for 4 or 6. We felt the food served here was very good with a good selection and always hot and drinks served promptly. Staff were very friendly and efficient. If you eat early you can walk straight in, if you like to eat later you may have to wait for a table, generally 20 mins. This was never a problem for us as we like to go for a pre-dinner drink so we would go to the restaurant, were given a pager, would go off to enjoy our drink and then be called to eat at the time we wanted to. Great system. MDR - Italian Menu - Half of the upstairs MDR is set aside to serve an Italian Menu. There are 2 menus which are changed during the cruise so you need to keep an eye on that if you want to eat from both of them. Although you are still in the MDR, it is a different eating experience and an option if you don't fancy anything on the main MDR menu. Glass House - In the evening serves a tapas and pizza menu. Tried this once enjoyed the food, but didn't like eating next to the indoor pool and sunbeds. There is a platter of continenta meats and cheese, then you can choose from 7 tapas choices and then you choose a pizza of your choice. There is also a desert choice available. This is free of charge - you can choose a hot stone meal for which a supplement is charged. Snack Shack - Sandwiches, Salads, Fruit pots, chips, burgers, chicken Wings, Fried Fish - that type of food. Only used this when coming back late to the ship - it's OK but wouldn't eat here if other options were available. Did not eat in the paid for restaurants. Entertainment was excellent and varied, as was the activities - something for everyone and if you didn't want to join in you could find quiet parts of the ship. All the entertainment staff were excellent. To ring the changes on this 18 day cruise entertainers were flown in to perform on one or 2 days and then left the ship. There were plenty of bars depending what you like to do in an evening and the choice of drinks was excellent. We never had to wait long to be served whether at the bar or from our seat. Ports of Call - Arrived as scheduled and we were given plenty of time in each port (an average of 7 hours). Did not go on any Marella excursions but the excursion staff were helpful when asked questions and provided a printed map of the main town area. Tip - If the weather is not good try to get a seat at The Veranda at the rear of the ship, it was sheltered when the outer decks were very windy. To sum up we had a fabulous trip, Food and Drinks were Very Good, Entertainment and Activities were excellent and the staff were the best. We enjoyed it so much we would book to go again as there are still things to see at the ports of call. Read Less

Boys had good voices but the girls ,dreadful!. staff in restaurants brilliant ,Vladimir,Jason,Romaine in fact all of them. Not enough chairs in bar areas,A bit like a booze cruise for pensioners. lots of nice people,However the free flowing drink ,didnt always bring out the best in people. lots of calls for code Alfa,Alfa ,WHICH MEANS THERE IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY. all that drinking and the age group I am sure did not help. bar staff good apart from the bar manager on deck 4, very arrogant and aggressive.I saw him in action. Not a good way to handle a situation. comics in the broadway not that good they had racist overtones, one comic stood and insulted the guests . does anyone monitor the comedians?. sun loungers a problem as usual . all in all a bit manic. The departure from Jamaica was a nightmare, It was like going through prison ,the attitude of customs was really terrible. We were on the same cruise but in reverse back in April this year.. weather for first week from Corfu through the med to Canary Islands was terrible but staff managed to keep everyone amused and jolly.. A lot of staff have been moved to other ships which was a negative as a lot of staff in live lounge and atrium had none of the zip and bounce that the originals had except two..There was Shevroy an excellent bar waiter in the live lounge, a true pro, superb he really was top drawer and looked after us everyday and night, he should be head barman because behind there he would be the dogs do das as he is wasted doing what he does... TUI or Marella will lose him if not careful; then comes Phil the young lad who went everywhere with his bell ringing it dancing, sharing the love amongst everybody and quite frankly he should be the number 1 name on the crews list as it was him who everybody warmed to and was better fun to watch than the entertainment onboard. He could be found on deck 9 during day serving drinks to all with his huge smile beaming from ear to ear and then at night time he was stationed just outside the live bar which seemed strange as he should’ve been in where everybody could watch and dance with him etc...Not a bad cruise, food in main restaurant 47 a little hit and miss but the tapas and hot stone menu in the glasshouse were superb ... promote those two lads, truly great staff members Read Less

Been on Discovery 2 before, nice ship, food ok, staff lovely always smiling, especially Philip he is a credit to Marcella. Ports of call very good, weather in Europe not so good, we were in a force 12 gale one day, but we survived it. Entertainment from Headliners excellent, didn't see comidiens so can't comment. 4 Tunes very good but did not like Jon Asher. Pleased Captain didn't say it's going to be a 'bobby dazzler' as often as he did on last cruise, he must have taken heed of feedback. I must say to all those inconsiderate people who went up to the Veranda deck to move sun beds on the 5 consecutive sea days ,one night it was 3am and others it varied between 4 am and 6am you should be ashamed of yourselves and if anyone thinks of booking a Junior Suite on deck 8 think again because you will be woken up in the early hours unless General Manager does something about blocking the stairs on deck 9 that lead to Veranda deck during night time thus stopping the selfish people from accessing Veranda deck until a reasonable time. Good cruise overall, but will not book a Junior Suite deck 8 again. Read Less

This was our first time cruising and we wanted a smaller or mid sized ship with a balcony. Discovery 2 fits that bill. My wife and I, both in our 60s, would thoroughly recommend this cruise. Cabin 7006 with balcony was excellent in every way. In particular it had plenty of power points. One USA, one European and three USBs, one under each wall light.. We ate largely in 47 degrees the main dining room and found both the service and food to be very good. We ate early, rarely after 7:15, when there were no queues, but did notice queues, sometimes long, after 8:00. Upstairs in 47 Degrees Italian was also very good and free. One night we ate in the Steakhouse at £30pp extra. Well worth it, superb food and service. We did note that early booking on day 1 of the cruise is vital as after Monday this restaurant was booked solid and operating a waiting list. We found that there were plenty of lifts and we never waited long at all. There were a fair number of disabled passengers with small buggies but they caused no problem and it would seem that this is a good ship and cruise for disabled people. We took an organised trip at every stop and enjoyed them all, although we felt two of them to be poorly organised by Marella. The guides, without exception, were very good. Dress code throughout is smart casual. Something women find easy and men in my experience find difficult to understand! Same comment also applies back home at my golf club. Dress to impress night, I wore a three piece suit. About 5% wore tuxedo - well done! 20% Jacket and tie, 75% jacket or no jacket and no tie. Some even wore jeans. Didn't bother us, perhaps it's a plus that on this ship you wear what you want, within reason. We would definitely cruise with Marella again and would choose a balcony cabin. We spoke with others and saw the interiors of outside and inside cabins and those who chose them loved them. Staff were universally excellent. We spoke to people from South America, West Indies, Philippines, etc and they were a joy to speak to and to have them serve us. We watched 4 shows in the large theatre where they bring waiter served drinks to your seat. We found the shows to be well put together and the performers did a good job. The theatre was packed for 2 shows a night. Embarkation (we were one hour late from Gatwick) and disembarkation were no problems. You do have to be out of your cabin by 8am on the final day and have packed suitcases in your hallway the previous night. Read Less

Why this Cruise? - Timing - We organised this trip to coincide with half term as one of our party is still of school age. The dates were correct for us and the relatively short haul flight to join the ship in Corfu made it viable. The Ship - I am not complete convert to cruising, having only taken three cruises previously over a 30 year period. In that time the World of cruising has changed considerably. I did have concerns when reading reviews about this ship (Discovery 2) with some reports suggesting it was poorly maintained. Those reporting such things could not be more wrong. The ship was in immaculate condition with teams working to ensure it remained so. For those that chose to look closely there were signs that Discovery 2, whilst new to TUI did have a 22 year previous history with Royal Caribbean, but you would need to be picky. The Cabin - We considered the cost of the upgrade to an Executive Suite reasonable. The suite was large enough for two twin beds, a sofa and two arm chairs and was well presented. The balcony was large enough to accommodate one lounger, two chairs and a table. The bath and shower were comfortable and well kept. Room Service - Room Service has a limited menu, but is fairly priced. Wines are a little expensive, but the mini bar is pretty empty, and there seems little objection to you filling it with your own wine bought at each port. Dining - Dining was relaxed, with no fixed meal times and a fairly forgiving dress code. Restaurant 47 (degrees) is the nearest you get for formal dining, with a menu that changes daily. The food is well presented, and whilst the menu is not vast there is something to suit most tastes. The key alternative is the buffet which is comprehensive but a little bit samey. There a few speciality restaurants that do not come as part of the all inclusive package. We only tried one and found it a very pleasant experience. Entertainment - Some reports on this ship can be quite critical of the Entertainment on this ship, the term 'Butlin's on the sea' being a common expression. Whilst my experience of cruising is limited I suspect all ships can be accused of this to some extent. On this cruise a number of artists featured that in my opinion were extremely talented. If something does not appeal to you, the ship is big enough to offer plenty of alternatives. The ship has two pools. The outdoor pool tends to be a bit of a free for all and can get crowded, whilst the indoor pool is very quiet and filled with people who probably would prefer to be sailing under a Cunard flag. All Inclusive and Fellow Passengers - Whilst it was autumn half term in some of the UK, there were very few families (at least with children of school age). The majority of passengers would be over 40, with the highest percentage being 50 plus or retired. TUI is the dominant package tour operator in the UK, and has successfully expanded its market to include the packaged cruise. The cruise is now an alternative option to the four-star all-inclusive hotel, only this hotel tends to move about. Needless to say the vast majority are hard working people looking to enjoy a hassle-free holiday, but there will always be the odd one that sees all-inclusive as an challenge to drink the bar dry, and the odd complainer, who I am sure makes the ship's reception staff worth every penny they are paid. Be aware of the term all-inclusive. Whilst fruit juices is free, carbonated drinks such as Coke are not ,which somewhat negates the term all-inclusive in my opinion. You can upgrade for £50 a week to a higher drinks package, but this turns out to be £100 a Cabin as both parties in a Cabin have to take it. This is unfair if, as we were, one of our party is to young to drink. Unless you have real appetite for cocktails the upgrade seems rather poor value for money. Internet - not fit for purpose. Needs upgrading. Read Less

Our problems with Marella Cruises started just after booking: we didn't realise that when we booked through the cruise hotline we were automatically diverted to a store location (which was nowhere near us). Not only were the staff at Stockport ill-trained, but their computer system didn't even link up with the Cruise dept. I later had to give up adding an additional week hotel reservation because they could not provide live pricing and by the time they got back to me with details, the property had sold out - this happened 3 times over! I also believe the agent knowingly misinformed me about cruise details in order to secure a sale. We booked a week cruise for 7 people over 3 rooms. Even 10 months advance booking could not secure us a family room nor adjoining rooms, meaning our 10-year anniversary cruise had to be spent in separate rooms in order to chaperone the children. We decided to take our children on our anniversary cruise because the cruise was advertised as having Kids' Club from 9am until 2am each day, so we assumed we could have a couple 'date nights'. Once aboard we learned that the nearly fully booked ship considered the October school half-term break a low season, thus cancelling the vast majority of kids club. They offered 3 awkward 2-hour sessions instead of the original promise. As for other onboard offerings for children, there was a video game room which was unsuitable for our children (mainly too young to 'get it'), a 9-hole mini golf, a climbing wall (open 2hrs per day) and 2 swimming pools. Unfortunately we were not informed the the pools were re-filled with sea water each day, including the indoor one, making them far to cold for anyone to actually swim in. They were not heated in the meantime. Is this common practice on cruises? Within 3 days, our children were bored with the pathetic offerings onboard, and not able to spend entire days out at port. We found the ship clean and the food great. The ports were amazing, and obviously these can not be faulted. That said, Marella advertises Corfu as one of the ports on the itinerary, which is false advertising as they only flew us in at 10:30pm on embarkation day, and out at 10:30am on disembarkation day. Ridiculous. I might recommend this cruise to adults travelling unaccompanied by children, but it is certainly NOT fit as advertised, as Marella's flagship 'family' option. Very disappointed. This was our first cruise and we absolutely loved it !!! We can't stop telling everyone how good it was. All I would say is do what you want and not what everyone else wants you to do. The cruise had a dress to impress evening where everyone dresses up in their refinery. Not for us thank you. I wear a suit all week and this was not my idea of fun. However, lots of smiles from those that did and that is excellent. Islands self service was brilliant. I didn't want to line up and have waiter service, that was our choice and again, I welcome those that want this. Myself and my wife are very used to good food but certainly didn't want this on our holiday. I did feel certain people were judgemental on various things, one being dining self service. One couple said to us that they were "slumming it" in Islands. I can assure you, myself and my wife know good food and this was not "slumming it". The entertainment was first class apart from one comedian. However, one person's taste is not the same as another. We played crazy golf at 11 o'clock at night with no one around and loved it. We found a part of the ship at the back to sit on our own with a long drink and take it all in. This ship catered for everyone but every activity is not for everyone. I heard one person say they didn't like the ship because you coudn't do everything like you could on other cruise liners !!! The planned excursions were not to our taste and we only did one. Saying that, the others we wanted to do were cancelled due to lack of interest. I cannot recommend high enough, loved it from start to finish but I do urge you to take from it what you want. We were quite worried after reading previous reviews , however it turned out to be a very good cruise. Firstly the cons ( not many ) . As so many other reviews have highlighted they need more bar/wait staff in atrium/live room bars between 6-11pm this was the only negative review of service . ( PLEASE LISTEN MARELLA !!!! would have been 5 stars but for this !!!). Also the only other fault was that we felt some of the meat products ie burgers, cooked meats needed to be of a higher standard ( Think microwave burgers ! ). The pros , great flight and super transfer , embarcation all very well organised . The most friendly welcome ever ( previous ncl + celebrity cruise nowhere near as good in this respect). Virtually all the crew including officers very friendly ( one exception a surly barman in atrium bar ).Cabin cleaned very well by paul and charlie , lots of space and a comfortable bed.Food was generally very good and never waited long to be seated. Always managed to find a seat in islands. Something for everyone regards entertainment re dancing , bingo ,quizes , etc ( your never going to please everyone all the time as the ships passengers are a cross section of British society ).Fantastic itinery and some fairly priced excursions ( adriatic ). We thought this would be a one off cruise with marella but will now definatly book again. Go with a smile on your face and enjoy. Read Less

Probably the biggest disappointment was the food. The buffet restaurant seems to have no dress code and the food was absolutely appalling. Cheap, mass produced rubbish. The a la carte restaurants (47° and gallery 47) were slightly better but the food was all bought in and heated up, menus lacked imagination and the quality was average at best. We did have one good meal by paying £46 to upgrade to the Kora La Asian restaurant. This was almost 5 star but not quite. The ship has been with TUI Marella since 2017, before this it was Legend of the Seas and on exchange was supposed to have had millions spent on it. Apart from a nice external paint job it's difficult to see what this could have been spent on as it's all very tired and often quite tatty internally. The cabin has it's own section within this review. The entertainment was quite reasonable. The band 4Tunes are good and some of the shows were ok, though not fantastic. Why are cruise ships obsessed with Broadway shows? On good quality 5 star holidays we are used to entertainment that typifies the culture and music of the area being visited. The all inclusive drinks are ok but I don't understand why this doesn't include the cabin mini bar. Maybe the type of 5 star all inclusive holidays we are used to has set our expectations a bit high for large cruise ships due to the mixed client demographic. We certainly wouldn't sail with Marella again. Read Less

Have tried all the other marella ships. So decided on discovery 2 to cruise with friends. Never had a balcony cabin before . Would not pay for another one as didn't use it. Our cabin was just above the atrium so noisy if you wanted a nap or early night. Entertainment was just ok. Too much daytime entertainment slots were filled with spa demonstrations which are always too overpriced. The comedian Terry Cotta was very good. The 4 tunes group were very good the banda certa group not so good. Food and drink good. Cabin kept clean by Benji. Reception staff were polite. Entertainment staff friendly. Long wait for waiters to serve you they always seemed to look the other way except for Sherene a lovely girl from Jamaica and Philip or tinkerbell as we called him always on the go and so cheery. Standard have dropped in mdr, stains on tablecloths dirty cups and twice I saw young waiters just using the glass table number stand to brush crumbs on the floor. I think more training by older experienced staff is needed. Food is good but long wait for it to be served. More waiting on staff are needed in the dining rooms. I always come back from cruise with a chest infection I put it down to air con either in cabin or on flight. Would not cruise from Corfu airport again. Long queues outside airport then another to check in then another to put your case through then another for security. If you want to use special assistance you are put on last on the plane. Special praise goes to the woman captain on the flight for her persistence in trying to land our plane in strong winds . Well done. Read Less

The ship is in real terms old, having been purchased from Royal Caribbean, 1st constructed in the mid 90’s. However she has stood the test of time and is still very welcoming, for the type of cruiser that does not wants the whizz bang that the present day builds may have. The cabins are very much the same as every other ship in both design and size. However the media systems although modern flat screen, lack Video On Demand (VOD). But the Browser based, WiFi connected via all devices, notice board system worked really well. Even down to booking specialist restaurants or checking on board account. However there did not appear to be any sea based GSM mobile system. The usual minute based Wi-Fi system was available, for those who cannot do without their Internet time. The only bug bare with Wi-Fi, is the per minute pricing, when we all know data is charged by the Mbit. Just remember when travelling in Europe and some of the islands in the caribbean, this is not a problem because you can use you home plan whilst roaming. I glad to see that all the photographic based system used by the camera crew, where again accessed via the browser or dedicated tech stations. So that there was not wastage of row after row of printed photos. Entertainment onboard in all areas was varied and excellent, you can well understand why this cruise line tops the customer satisfaction in this area. Food was varied and delicious, all venues are freedom dining, this could lead to a wait at busy times. However personally I prefer this to the now out of fashion club dining. Food service was well organised but not over the top. Room servicing as always cannot be faulted, timely and efficient. Bar service was at times a little slow, but use of electronic tablet ordering led to few errors. The only bone of contention, as regards the All Inclusive (AI) bars was concerned, where chargeable items, unless you had the premium AI, at an extra £50 pppw. However some of these, if in a cocktail, would be free, very confusing. Also bottled water was chargeable, although each cabin floor had a chilled water machine. Finally the navigational staff, ie captain etc, where not very visible, which seems a little bit of a shame. Read Less

What a shock when we opened the door of cabin 7117 a small dark room the bed had to be pushed against the wall leaving the person on the inside have to crawl over the partner to get in and out. As this cruise cost 5 grand plus we were very disappointed to spend 2 weeks in this cave never sure if it was night or day. I wasn't expecting much from this cruise - having been once before with P&O on Ventura and finding the food to be absolutely dire for the price we paid - but the itinerary and local flights from Cardiff to Corfu suited us so decided to go for my 40th birthday with my mother. And what a completely different experience it was! Firstly, I am not a fan of all-inclusive and haven't done such a holiday in over 14 years. But I am now well and truly converted, at least as far as Marella is concerned. The food was absolutely delicious, wherever we ate. It was good quality and there were definitely no short-cuts being taken anywhere. In fact, a carved fillet steak we got in the Main Dining Room (so no supplement) was the best fillet steak I have EVER tasted, anywhere....! I am not sure how that is even possible but there you go, it just goes to show the quality of the food Marella are delivering on their cruises. The drinks included had to be experienced to be believed - the only thing not included was bottled water...! Main brand drinks all the way and even better the wonderful staff were there taking your orders from your table or your sun lounger and promptly delivering them straight to you! Now, the staff.... Just wow....! I have stayed in quite a few 5* hotels that could only dream of providing the service that the staff provided on the Discovery. It was seriously that good. Bearing in mind how many staff members there are on the ship - and I could honestly not fault one single person. They worked tirelessly to give us a fabulous holiday. I am not sure how Tui/Marella are doing this at the prices they charge but it just goes to show they are definitely doing something right as every single member of staff was absolutely top notch and so happy to be there doing their jobs. Special mention for our Cabin Steward Charlie, who was an absolute angel and also to Josh Harris the actor host, who was absolutely beautiful, both inside and out! Such a lovely person who always took the time to talk to us, what an absolute gentleman. Thanks Josh! Martyn the Cruise Director was also lovely and always took the time to ask how we were enjoying ourselves. There are only one or two things I think Marella could improve upon, which isn't a lot bearing in mind how picky I am when it comes to holidays. Firstly the entertainment wasn't that great - we nicknamed the Live Room the 'Dead Room' as the resident pianist Jessica wasn't to our taste at all and neither were the band 4Tunes - we found the song choices from both were just really depressing! The saving grace was two shows from the absolutely amazing comedian Jay McGee - he was the funniest comedian I've seen for a long time and it was impossible to watch him without crying tears of laughter - my cheeks hurt from laughing so hard! Love you Jay! There was also an odd odour of sewerage in some parts of the ship which wasn't very pleasant and still not sure where it came from. Also, the taps in the cabin bathroom are horrific and need to be changed asap. They were of the 'spinkler' type and just splashed water everywhere apart from on our hands and faces! After only being back from the cruise only 1 day I am already looking to book again for next year with Marella and I cannot wait. A MASSIVE well done to all of you and thank you so much for changing my mind about the whole cruise experience! Read Less

Our group of 6 adults cruised the iconic isles cruise it was fantastic from start to finish apart from two nights of rough seas that prevented us docking in Zante but instead we docked in katakolon which was beautiful. Food and drink was excellent something to suit everyone bar staff gr8 and especially the waiter Nikola from serbea who was so good to us throughout the week. Inside cabin was compact but good for us and had everything we needed Reginald was our house keeper and always was so pleasent and friendly. Will definitely be booking again well done TUI.Embarkment and Disembarkment were exceptional smooth and as we were on an evening flight we were able to stay on book with full use of all inclusive facilities until our pick up time, luggage all colour coded and ready for our coach. Only downside was the entertainment got a bit repetitive and we didn't enjoy the comedian at all but still loads more to keep us entertained. Read Less

Been on few cruises in the last few years but would not go back on discovery 2. Corfu airport very small and massive que on way home. Some people were having to que outside as there flight was delayed. Upgraded to a balcony room on 6th floor which was lovely. Staff nice. Did three excursions. Two were on the electric bikes which were great. George and Sophie were great guides. Would highly recommend this. Did an excursion in Venice think it was called secret escape? It was awful not at all like it’s advertised. Would not recommend. Hot tubs were not hot and a few times only one worked. Service in restaurants and bars were very slow and it appeared the staff were not experienced. Never enough staff on. Entertainment was poor apart from opera singer Benjamin. Was really disappointed after spending a lot of money on this cruise.Would rather go on an older ship where you are looked after better. Read Less

We chose the Adriatic cruise leaving from Corfu because of the itinerary. The staff in every department were really great & worked their socks off. The food was good, if a little repetitive. The Asian restaurant Kora La was absolutely fantastic - far & away the best food on the ship, & the service was great too. The entertainment was great - Benjamin Gillan & Paul Greenwood were really good. We enjoyed the bands as well. One point is that the Live Room was perhaps a bit small for the bands? Change it to a pub type bar, keep the acoustics in there, put the bands in the Venue. Cabin was small but fine, if a bit tired, bit the hair dryers were awful. They had hardly any power. Eva, our cabin steward, found me another which was more powerful but had the button you had to keep pressed down & it kept falling out of the socket. Bring your own, people! Bathroom was very well designed but would have been nicer with a solid surround in the shower. All in all a good trip without beg excitement. Read Less

We have never cruised before, and were a bit apprehensive This was an amazing holiday, top class entertainment, food, accom and service - can't wait to return. Some of the shows wouldn't have been out of place in the West End Choice of restaurants was great, and the gym facilities were adequate Destinations were ideal and we had enough time in each to get to relax, soak up the atmosphere before returning to ship. We just wish we had discovered cruising years ago- the perfect balance of relaxation, activity, good food and brilliant service- Tui should be very proud of Marella Discovery 2, its staff and crew- there was a sense of pride in the way everyone went about their daily tasks only recommendation- more effort into the open air cinema programme- Hook, Jumanji, BIG and Ghostbusters but only approx. 10 children on board And charging for wifi seemed a bit cheeky Read Less

Aegean Shores – TUI Marella Discovery 2 (7 day cruise) This was our second TUI cruise and overall it was enjoyable and due to the ports of call. Booking I booked through the TUI offices in West Lothian and spoke to a lady called Lynne. She was absolutely fabulous and I can’t thank her enough for her time and assistance. Flights and Transfers The flights were on time and the in-flight service was excellent. My only issue is that once checked in we then had to collect our cases on arrival and haul them to coaches. Previously, once we’d checked in, the next time we saw our cases was outside our cabin door. Cabin Our cabin was spacious and I only have praise for housekeeping staff, Irinya who serviced our cabin on a daily basis and was excellent. Food We ate almost exclusively in the 47° restaurant for breakfast, dinner and the occasional lunch. The waiter service was friendly and efficient. Sometimes we had to wait for a table but never longer than 20 minutes. The food was varied and of good quality. Unfortunately the food elsewhere on board was not so good. Snack Shack – This busy pool side food area serves chips, battered fish and chicken wings, all day EVERY DAY! This became very monotonous which was frustrating and disappointing. Also the sandwiches were wrapped in a paper bag and had minimum fillings of very poor quality. The salads came in a flimsy cardboard container that fell apart once you picked it up and the salad was 80% lettuce. The Glass House – Only visited this once and that was enough. Very poor selection of food available which was hidden behind glass counters, very poor quality and variety. The Islands – Busy self-service restaurant, only visited this for afternoon tea. Again very disappointed in the quality and variety of food offered here. Sandwiches made with thick sliced bread and minimum fillings. Selection of cakes (if you could call them cakes) was of very poor quality and the only hot choice on EVERY DAY was sausage roll! With the exception of the 47° restaurant the food on offer was of poor quality and cheap! Drinks It is an all-inclusive package so most drinks are included in the price. My only issues with this are: * Unless you pay an extra £50 bottled water is chargeable * When ordering drinks if you don’t specify the brand name of the alcohol you want you get served the cheap rubbish! * The bar staff were very thin on the ground and on occasions you had to wait some considerable time to get served. And the bar staff had trouble keeping a check of who was next to being served and on occasions just wandered off. * The cocktails were very disappointing, the bar staff simply threw them together so each time you had one they tasted different. Also the glasses were never decorated or accompanied with fruit that you would expect to be part of the cocktail experience – again very disappointing. Entertainment This was the most disappointing aspect of the cruise, with the exception of the Broadway Show Lounge. Elsewhere on the ship the entertainment was shabby, boring and a holiday camp could have provided a better standard. There were 3 grand pianos on board, one in the 47° restaurant, the Atrium and the Live Room. The only piano played was in the Live Room. So no background pianist during dinner or in the Atrium, despite the fact a pianist was on board. In fact on one occasion two of the entertainment staff were holding an evening dance class in the Atrium bar and the music came from a laptop placed ON TOP of the piano! It seems more common that the Atrium is used for entertainment when a pianist playing music or taking requests would have been more than sufficient and relaxing. On the last night the entertainment staff gave a farewell musical event in the Atrium bar, they were all casually dressed, un co-ordinated and singing to a backing track which was very amateurish, uninspiring and cheesy. The opera singer was superb but singing Time to Say Goodbye on the last night was a cringe-fest. On the day of departure many of us had late flights but had to vacate our cabins by 08.30. As a result passengers were sat in the Atrium and other bars killing time and milling around. During the whole day no entertainment was provided and the shops were shut. Passengers sat around as if they were in an airport departure lounge or doctors surgery, very disappointing. Clearly an example of key staff assigned other duties and a possible reflection of how understaffed the ship was. Excursions The excursions were more expensive than our last cruise and we only booked two as a result. The Athens excursion cost £65pp. We set off about 9am and were back on the ship by 1pm. During this time we spent just over an hour at the Acropolis, the rest of the time was spent on the bus with places of interest pointed out to us as we drove past. This was by no means value for money and I certainly would not recommend this excursion to anyone. Although our guide was excellent and well informed and her capabilities not a result if any input from Marella. The bicycle ride in Crete cost £36pp. On our last cruise we took a bicycle excursion in Ibiza which we thoroughly enjoyed. They are not cheap but as we enjoyed the bike ride we booked again in Crete expecting similar. I have to say that the staff in charge of the bike excursion were fantastic (Sophie & George) and I have no complaints about them, however I do feel disappointed with the excursion. My complaint centres the duration and time spent actually cycling. Within 20 minutes of starting we had a 45 minute stop in Heraklion, which was fine. We then cycled for approx. 30-40 mins to some obscure beach and spent about 11/2 hours there. We then headed back to the ship and arrived approx. 2pm. All in all very disappointing due to short duration and minimum time actually cycling! Summary Aspects of the cruise were enjoyable and met our expectations but it was crystal clear that TUI were trying to cut costs wherever possible, particularly the standard and quality of food offered, the entertainment and the number of staff. It’s tempting to say that it was a floating holiday camp when, with a little creative thought and small expense, it could be so much more than it was. It has certainly made us think twice about booking again with TUI. Read Less

This was our first ever cruise. We were a bit dubious at first and wasn’t sure if it was for us, but after a couple of days, we found our feet and began to enjoy it. The day at sea, the boat was very very busy (understandably), the pool area looked like seal colony, people were packed in like sardines, which I didn’t like. Days at destinations was fine - plenty of room. The staff are EXCELLENT! Very friendly and always happy to help you and serve you. Certain staff really stood out ... the Head Waiter Josico ... great manager and really goes out of his way to help. Charity the waitress in the steak restaurant is just lovely! Sofie on the destination desk was lovely and so helpful. Some of the entertainment is fantastic ... our favourites were the singer Maynia / Jessica Drake on the Piano / the comedian is a must! He’s so so funny. Those 3 entertainers were the highlight of our cruise. The Steak restaurant for a supplement is well worth it! The food and service are amazing! The only thing that was a bit of a let down was that every day you would be pretty much guaranteed to be served a drink that was not 100% clean. We sent back lots of drinks because lots of glasses had lipstick marks on them. Read Less

I have previously cruised with Tui, on this ship and a sister ship. The quality of the food has gone down hill to the point of being very average now. The Italian restaurant was a choice of three menus that just got rotated. The main restaurant choice was poor and didn't arrive as described too often. Peach Melba came out as tinned peach slices and ice cream. Truffle oil came out as olive oil. Cream came out as custard. Mature Balsamic Vinegar came out as straight Balsamic that had sugar added. Vegetable Tatin came out as onions and sweet peppers.... The list goes on. The ship shows its age badly. Broken doors on the wardrobe, scratched tops to the dressers, rust holes in the edge of the balcony, wet rot on deck boards, trip hazards on deck drains, scratched hand rails on stairs. Even the seals were falling out on the glass on the balcony. The staff, ( lots less than last year ), were great and tried really hard but we're on a hiding to nothing. Short staffing just doesn't work! Probably the most annoying thing is the vibration that ship now has all the time. So much worse than last year. If not it was the lifts. They only seem to have half of them working and if they did they missed some decks completely when called. The most unsettling point was the continuous list to port, nothing was vertical always leaning to the left. Yes, I checked with the inbuilt level on the camera and even made a plumb Bob with cotton and a spool. Great itinerary and trips, but they were so expensive. £23 to visit a site that is a 4 Euro coach ride away on the quay. Will be cruising again, but not with Marcella. Oh and finding out that booking 18 months in advance just got me stiffed for 30% higher cost than friends we made on the trip in that had a better cabin on a higher deck. Read Less

flight to corfu .....no problem . 1 hour after getting bags at airport we were in the cabin ...the cases arrived promptly. Cabin ...a junior suite was spacious with a big balcony ....spotlessly clean and kept that way by the steward who was brilliant. Meals in Islands restaurent ....most of the time ....i thought were good ....lots of negative comments on this site however ....speak as you find ..if you wanted finer dining you had options ...but booking well in advance was necessary or wait till called ....which didn,t appeal to us . The islands buffet was probably the best of its type we have experienced on our cruising experiences...quite quiet after 8 .15pm suited us ...give them some credit the staff were brilliant .. Timing is important on a cruise ship re dining ....go at peak times and you get what you should have expected ...we planned our days to avoid busy times and found the whole experience to be relaxing. Sunbathed on the balcony ....make sure you get the correct side of the ship for the most benefit of this and beware of the deck 8 cabins forward under the overhang which restricts sun. We read about noise above deck 8 before we went but never experienced any problems. must have been lucky ? The itinerary was great...i loved being in a different port every day almost and we did 3 excursions which were worth doing. Enertainment was exactly what we expected ...decent standard .....cruise ship musicals ....a comedian etc.....surely customers have an idea what its going to be like ....most night the Broadway theatre was pretty full ...dancers and singers were excellent. Individuals and groups playing in different areas of the ship were generally excellent. Disembarkation was smooth ...wait your.turn ...relax on ship ....on the bus ...corfu airport experience ok ...despite the prophets of doom on the ship.....and there were plenty of them.....flight on time ..great. To summarise ....a good relaxing holiday ....nice ship ...staff great ..worth the money . Came back home pleased with the whole experience. Read Less
