From the time my husband and I entered the stateroom, it was very obvious it was not clean. We have been on 4 cruises in the past 12 months and 2 of them were with Celebrity. Compared to the other cruises, it was clear our room was not being cleaned properly. In fact, the drawers were so dirty (not scratched, with paint chipping) actually dirty they could not be used. My husband requested our cabin Steward bring him cleaning spray (such as windex) so my husband could clean it and the drawers could be used. The Steward was apologetic and requested we don’t to report him, and to give him another chance.. However, things did not improve. My husband actually demonstrated to him how he should make a bed, because he was unable to do that without the sheets sliding off the bed when we slept. In addition, there were a number of trays that were caked with dust. We resolved the by having the trays removed. The trash was consistently overflowing, because it was never emptied. On top of these things, our bathroom door squeaked too! Our steward asked maintenance to fix, but we suffered through it for a number of days. It is not fun to be woken up every time someone goes to the bathroom. On our 3rd night in the boat, I came back to find a hair clip placed with my belongings. It would have been great to have IF it had been mine. However, it wasn't. It amazed me that it took 3 days + the day the last passengers left to discover this. Especially when you consider that there is supposed to be a very thorough cleaning between passengers, and vacuuming daily. It became clear that there was poor cleaning going on in our stateroom. At that point, I reported these things. We were promptly contacted by someone in management. They assured me that the room had been cleaned well since my report. Things were cleaner after that (about day 4 or 5) but, it was certainly awkward to go to our room and see the steward (and his co-workers). It’s the kind of feeling no one wants to have on their vacation. In addition to the problems with our room, there were some major problems with the spa. My husband and I purchase the aqua class because it’s something he truly enjoys. On our cruise in 2013 we were in an aqua class suite (in the Reflection). Since there is no aqua class suite on the Eclipse, we were in a regular aqua class room. We spend the extra money on this because it is part of what makes our vacation a vacation. The first day of the cruise we to find out the hours the spa was open. We were told the Persian Garden closes at 9. So we went at 8. When we got there we were told it closes at 8, not 9. That 9 is only for port days, this was obviously a huge dissapointment. After traveling overseas, we were looking forward to it! On August 5th we had our first port day. My husband went at 8 ( per what we were told and what the daily schedule said the hours were). He was told it closes at 8 because the it was "a half port day". The port day was till 6pm. When he tried to explain the schedule and what we were told, the guy rudely informed him that "that they are cleaning it". We paid extra for Aqua Class and expect to have the facilities available at the scheduled times. We also, would like to be treated nicely. After this we complained to desk relations. The next day we were contacted by the spa manager and she was very nice and apologetic, she offered 30 min massage to each of us to try to make up for it. The following day my husband went at 7:15 pm (it was a sea day) and was told that the Persian garden was closed because it was being cleaned. After some arguing, he was allowed in. However, it was far from relaxing at that point. I am currently planning the summer trip we will take in 2015 with my husband. There are many things I like about Celebrity, but based on our last expieriance, there doesn’t appear to be a standard for the entire cruise line. While our vacation on the Reflection was excellent, our expieriance on the Eclipse was way below average. I have reached out to celebrity to discuss my concerns since I returned from our trip. I have written them 3 times and called twice. Everytime I call I am told to write! However, I have had NO RESPONSE..... To me, that is shocking....   Read Less

Had a great cruise on the Celebrity Eclipse for our Ruby wedding anniversary. The ship was immaculate, with great customer care. We had a balcony cabin with restricted view. This did not bother us, but it could cause a concern for some guests as the lifeboats were just below the balcony. The cabin butlers were fantastic, kept the room immaculate, and not at all intrusive. The food was good, and we chose the anytime dining and ate in the cafeteria, which had a great choice of food in particlar over lunch time. The only downside was that breakfast was hectic, and it was hard to get a table, and the tables were very close together. Entertainment very good, with a great choice of acts. The only downside to the holiday was that we always felt someone was trying to sell us something, and anytime you went near Canyon Ranch or the shops, someone would be pressing you to buy something, which was annoying. You also had to pay to dine in a number of the restaurants, and most of the classes. The gym was fantastic, and had a great choice of equipment. All in all a great holiday. Read Less

Firstly, I disagree with a lot of the other reviews for this cruise. However, there were areas that could be improved by Celebrity to make the whole experience much better. Food: The food was absolutely excellent, always at a top quality, that never fluctuated, whether you are in the Moonlight Sonata or a specialty restaurant. Always a variety of different dishes, so you are never bored of the same thing. You always fill full after, but not uncomfortably stuffed. The room-service was also similar. The quality was always at a high standard, and you had a large variety of foods to choose from. Service: The service was always excellent, the staff were always smiling, friendly and happy to help, but at times I did feel there was not the right ratio of staff to passengers. We had a wine waiter who was obviously very busy, and found it difficult to help everyone. However all in all, the staff were excellent as expected. Entertainment: Personally, I believe the entertainment did let it down slightly. A lot of the activities were similar, and targeted at the older generation. In the evenings, the shows were usually excellent, however there were 1/2 fairly boring ones which were more about promoting the individual performer then giving the audience a good time. However, they were usually of a high standard. Cabin: Always spotless, very big especially for a cruise ship, and the bathroom was clean and of a good size, with lots of cupboards to put things away in. We have been on 2 cruises before, but this ship was definitely the best in terms of cabin size and space. Shore Excursions: All were very very expensive. We did an excursion in Malaga and we had more time in the coach then out looking around. Quite annoying that they didn't do a service for every port where they gave you a shuttle into the city. This is apparent as Civitavechia (Rome) is 1:30 hours drive from Rome, so there were no safe/cheap ways to getting into the city (taxis were a lot, and some friends we made on the cruise nearly got pick pocketed on the train into Rome). Weaknesses: The price of WIFI was a lot especially as you had lots of sea days so there was no internet. As well as this, it was extremely slow, and at times didn't worked. I believe Celebrity should give each passenger 30 minutes complimentary wifi each day, especially as it costed so much, and there were passengers like myself, who needed it. More sun beds is an absolute must! On sea days, it got very busy, and by 9 o'clock all the sun beds had been taken. So there was nowhere comfortable to sit and enjoy the sun. The pool areas were always packed with children (understandable as it in the summer holidays), but all 3 pools were just not big enough for the passengers to be able to have a swim in without knocking into other people. Just returned from 14 night cruise around the Med. First time on Celebrity, and had wanted to try them for some time. First impressions - very good. Handed a glass of champagne on arrival, nice welcome. Cabin on deck 9, lovely - clean and airy, with a lovely shower (no more plastic curtains ...). Outside areas very nice, comfy sunbeds (people still hogging sun beds, despite no-one on them, and pool butlers, eg, keep sunbeds in the shade as well as in the sun - not friendly or considerate of others wanting beds. Entertainment - I thought this was quite poor. Main event each evening was a show in the theatre but once this was over nothing much happening - very mediocre music bands, and not enough seating areas in the other bars if an event was happening. Next the bar staff - we had a drinks package (as did most other passengers), BUT to get a drink at the bar was nigh on impossible. Not enough bar staff for the number of people ordering - is this a ploy by Celebrity who don't care whether you have a drink or not - after all you've paid for it already....! In general the staff were friendly, but some of the bar staff were surly, and no friendly word when ordering (could be due to the pressure they were under). Food in the Ocean View was smashing - lovely presentation, and could always get a seat. MDR - food not as good as I expected - although service was good. Limited choice of desserts. Excursions, altho still expensive, seemed well organised. Overall an enjoyable holiday - would I go with Celebrity again - not sure.... P&O entertainment definitely better - more to do around the ship. Read Less

We have sailed aboard several Celebrity cruise ships, but this was our first time on the Eclipse. We are a couple in our sixties who has travelled the Mediterranean on several occasions and always enjoy the ports of call. This was no exception. About the ship: The ship is spotless, the decor elegant, and the artwork located throughout is amazing. We actually did a tour of the many staircases just to have a look at the very fine sculptures, paintings and photographs that decorate the stair walls. Service: Staff and crew were polite and friendly. Unlike some other reviewers, we did not encounter any rudeness or unpleasant attitude from any of them. If I were to make a reproach, it would simply be that the service in the Dining Room at late dinner seating was so efficient, at times we felt a bit rushed... I guess it's better to have this problem than the opposite. Food quality: Typical breakfast buffet, with options for every taste. Presentation in the Dining Room could be improved. Often, food is not served as requested; twice I ordered medium-cooked steak and both times it arrived rare. Food quality was reasonable, however, desserts were boring. We noticed that the Oceanview Cafe had some very interesting options for entrées and desserts at dinner time. Entertainment: This is where Celebrity absolutely failed. There we were, in an elegant and sophisticated environment, yet served pub-style entertainment. Out of 14 nights of entertainment in the theatre, we only enjoyed two at the beginning of the cruise, the comedian (who knew how to deliver stand-up comedy intelligently, without resorting to sexist stereotypes) and the singer (Linda Hamilton - another seasoned performer). All other guest performers were mediocre interpretation of bad-taste comedy, tired magic tricks, etc. Pre-dinner entertainment with the house band (Spitfires - who played out of tune and off balance most of the time) and the jazz band was offered in the Grand Foyer where acoustics are simply inadequate. They were intended to provide some dance music for guests, but mostly delivered tunes for kids to move to. We would be remiss not to mention the annoying piped in music throughout the ship. Lounges and bars: Too few seats in any of the bars for the number of passengers. Quality of drinks was quite variable. In the Cafe, we also noticed that coffee preparation was very inconsistent. This is totally unacceptable when you pay $6.50 for a latte. Celebrity traditions: We miss the special touches that we enjoyed so much in our early cruises: the chocolate on the pillow, the theme music that played at every port departure, the sorbet parade on sea days... We fear Celebrity is cutting too many corners and will soon lose the high rating it currently enjoys. Bad enough they have seriously cut back on enrichment lectures, they are now basically delivering activities to promote their paid services. We have another Celebrity cruise planned this year, but will likely then turn our attention to other cruise lines. Read Less

S2 Cabin. Premium Drinks Package. 7 Dinners MDR (table for 8 late sitting). 2 dinners in Murano, 3 dinners in Tuscan Grille, 2 Dinners in Qsine and 5 lunches Bistro on Five. Below are my observations of our first Celebrity cruise. • Embarkation/Disembarkation: Full marks to Celebrity, they have the slickest and easiest embarkation/disembarkation process I have ever experienced. • Stateroom: Our S2 stateroom was a good size with plenty of living space. The storage space in this cabin is amazing, there is plenty of room in the wardrobes and we were unable to fill all the drawer space. The bathroom although small is well designed with lots of storage and a shower that provides gallons of hot water. The balcony is furnished with two chairs/loungers and a table but we found the chairs/loungers uncomfortable. The room attendant kept the cabin clean and tidy and the butler was keen to offer his assistance whenever we needed it. • Public Spaces: We liked all the public spaces on the ship except for the Ensemble Lounge which we found poorly lit and old fashioned. Our favourite place on the ship was the Sky Observation Lounge. Although we did not use the sun deck there seemed to be plenty of loungers to go round. • On Board Activities: Apart from the quizzes (full marks to Sam, the activities assistant, for her whole hearted efforts) we found there were few day time activities of any interest to us. We did visit the Bingo once but at $25 per person declined to go again. • Entertainment: We attended one main show which was no better or worse than any other cruise ship show we have seen. By far the best entertainment was provided by Steve Womack the late night comic who gave three shows during the cruise. • Dining: Despite the best efforts of the waiters, service in the main dining room was very slow. On the last formal night we had only just received our entrée when the parade of the catering staff started. Wine service in the MDR was worse than the waiter service, we often had to wait 30 minutes or more for our wine order to be taken. The service in the speciality restaurants was much better. We especially enjoyed dining in the Tuscan Grille and Qsine. I unfortunately took an instant dislike of Murano, finding the waiting staff pretentious and condescending. Bistro on Five is a lovely place to have a quiet and civilised lunch with friendly and attentive waiters. It was only the limited menu in Bistro on Five that dissuaded me from eating lunch there every day. The Ocean View Café provides buffet style dining for breakfast and lunch as well as dinner for those who don’t wish to use the other restaurants. Overall we found the menus offered plenty of choice and the quality of the food on the ship to be of a high standard. • Drinks Packages: The drinks packages seem to be confusing to customers and staff alike. One sommelier confided to me that the list of drinks available on the packages was being reduced for the next cruise. My personal preference would be to have the drinks packages removed and replaced by an on board credit perk. • Overall Experience: Our only previous experience of cruising on a large ship is with P & O. Of the two companies I would choose Celebrity every time. Although disappointed with the service in the MDR and the many bars on the ship, I came away from this cruise feeling that I had had a good holiday and that I had received good value for money. If we do not cruise with Celebrity again it will be because we find the ship too big for us and are going back to the more traditional cruising experienced on the older and smaller Fred Olsen ships.   Read Less

This was our first cruise. We couldn't fault the service. It was a wonderful experience ,from Julianna and Andre keeping our room clean and tidy to our beautiful singing counter assistant Treshanna and our waiters Bang Bang and Mark and sommelier Ovidou. We would give 10 out of 10 to all we have mentioned. We also enjoyed the entertainment .The shows that were on this trip were first class. we looked forward to going every evening. The house band were fantastic with all their involvement in supporting the the acts each evening. The excursions were very well organised. although they were quite expensive. We were very impressed with the care and attention given to all disabled guests. the ship was accessible to mobility scooters and wheelchairs On excursions ,the coaches that were provided were also accessible to wheelchair users. The whole experiece was wonderful. we will do it again soon. I havn't mentioned the other members off staff by name but sufficient to say that all members of staff we met were extremely courteous and friendly. We must not forget Captain Michael, who gave us an update on position and temperature etc every day. My Husband enjoyed his talk on the running of the ship. Read Less

Ship and staff were excellent everyone is working as a team and it shows from the officers to the bar staff, everyone speaks to you even if they are painting outside or cleaning. Really have to sort out the dress code for 'dress up nights'. A complete mess nobody knows what to wear and the result looks simply ridiculous--- just make a decision one way or the other and stick to smart or formal. Also please stop the touting for sales by staff outside the shops, after a week and half of saying no to an event, raffle, red carpet day, special offer or just trying to get you into the shop or art sale it begins to grate in the same way as time share sellers. Ports were the usual mix of industrial and scenic views. Entertainment was a little orientated toward individual performances rather than stage shows from the entertainments team. Read Less

My wife and I had a wonderful European vacation which included two weeks on the Eclipse cruising the Mediterranean. We’ve sailed on Celebrity before but this was our first on the Eclipse, and we found the experience exceptional. We live in Southern California so the cost was considerable when factoring in the air fare, however, we got our money’s worth and more. The ship had much to offer and even after two weeks never seemed old. Our Aqua Class cabin was well-appointed, comfy bed, and attended by Mary who always seemed to know whenever we needed anything, yet was never intrusive. One minor constructive suggestion was we thought there could be more storage space, like two drawers under the built-in sofa. However, most of the fun was outside the cabin and there was plenty to be had on the Eclipse. The ship was spotless, with light and warmth abounding. Although the ship was at full capacity and buzzing with people I could always find a quiet spot such as up on Lawn Club or in the Library. The highlights of the ship were the food, service, and activities. Cruise director Sue generally made one public address announcement in the morning so you were never bombarded with unnecessary PA announcements. If you read the daily list of activities you could plan accordingly. One poignant event was a brief, solemn remembrance on the morning of 9/11. We were blessed with wonderful, sunny weather and calm seas so most passengers jumped on a poolside lounge early morning and basked in the sun most of the day…including my wife. You can’t write about a cruise without mentioning the food. We spent most dinners in Blu and thoroughly enjoyed the savory cuisine. Blu was bright and cozy and was expertly managed by Igor, the Maitre D, and the hostess Marie who was there to seat you with a smile. Most nights our waiter was Umesha and he was a joy, with his spot-on menu recommendations with pleasant and efficient service. Steven, was our sommelier, and he made sure our wine glass was never empty. You also got to meet other interesting and friendly couples dining on adjacent tables. We had purchased a five-night specialty dinner package but did not use all of them because we preferred Blu. The passengers were primarily from the United Kingdom and we found them to be a fun group to holiday with. Unlike many cruises we’ve been on most passengers did dress up for the evening, especially formal nights with tuxes and array of gowns. The Martini Bar was the social hub and although I’ve read complaints on the wait for service I found the bar staff quite attentive and gave each drink the time it took to make it special. If it took a few extra minutes at time it was because there were so many people enjoying themselves - and isn't that the whole point of a cruise? We chose the itinerary because of the ports and they did not disappoint. We visited Gibraltar on its national day of celebration, Villa France (our favorite) with its sparkling blue waters. We actually spent the afternoon on local beach and took a swim. Next was Rome, which was crowed on a Saturday, Then to Livorno (Florence), although we took a short train ride to Pisa. Then on to Malaga, Spain; Lisbon, Portugal and finally back to Southampton. It’s been two weeks since we’ve disembarked but the vibrant memories remain. The Celebrity Eclipse and her crew provided us with a fantastic cruise.   Read Less

I finally gave in to my husbands years of pleading with me to go on a cruise and I can honestly say, it was one of the best holidays I have ever had (and I have had some real good holidays) We sailed from Southampton and ports of call were Gibraltar, Villefranche, Citavecchia, Florence/Pisa, Genoa, Malaga & Lisbon. We booked the previous night with the Holiday Inn and used their Cruise Parking offer. Sadly I didn't know there are numerous Holiday Inns in the area and we ended up in one around 10 min drive from the port. We were given directions to Cruise Parking area which again was approx. 10 min drive from the port but the process was seamless. The driver took our luggage onto the minibus, while we took a seat, they took out car away to park and we were driven to the port. The driver put our luggage onto the carts provided and we checked in. There were numerous check in desks and no queues. We were welcomed onboard with a glass of bubbly and advised to familiarise ourselves with the boat as the cabins were still being prepared. The ship was amazing and it was spotless clean throughout. There were staff constantly cleaning the public areas and cabins. There are so many bars, shops, restaurants, activities etc that it is impossible to sample them all. We spoke to staff at the restaurants to find out the booking process for meals etc and every member of staff were very helpful. We bought the Classic Drinks package which I think we made good use of. This allowed us to have bottled water, beer up to $8, wine up to about the same and cocktails in abundance. It also allows for speciality coffees, freshly squeezed orange juice etc if that's what you like. The staff will advise you if you are going to incur an additional charge for a drink not included in the package so we were fine with this. I was a bit annoyed at having to pay a service charge for the drinks package when I had already paid gratuities, but I was assured by Celebrity that this is normal practice. I still feel that I paid two lots of tips for my trip though. We had an inside stateroom which was fairly spacious. It had a massive very comfortable bed, a sofa, a kettle, fridge and good size en-suite toilet/shower. We were provided with complimentary toiletries which were good. The bedding was cotton and the towels were lovely and fluffy. We also had bathrobes which was a nice touch. The only complaint we had with the room was the lack of pillows but we used the cushions from the couch so not the end of the world. The food was amazing. We were assigned to the Moonlight Sonata Restaurant which was beautiful and packed with attentive staff however we mainly opted to eat in the Ocean View Café as this was a buffet setting with almost every food you could ever want to eat. The staff were very helpful and the food was outstanding. Even late in the evening you could go up and get pizza & pasta which was handy. There were also speciality restaurants which cost extra. We didn't sample them as we couldn't drag ourselves away from the buffet style restaurant. There were 2000 guests onboard and not once did we struggle to find a seat. The entertainment was great. We went to the main show almost every night and watched, singers, dancers, comedians, magicians etc. Our favourite was a welsh comedian called Jack Doyle, he was also a great singer and the crowds loved him. There was also a Karaoke bar, Wine Bar, Martini Bar and various other bars throughout the ship. We spent a lot of time in the Casino Bar as the service from Floren and Alex was so good we struggled to find the same elsewhere. They were very knowledgeable and helpful and could make a great cocktail or two Hic!! There was also loads of other entertainment throughout the fortnight which we didn't manage to get to. (maybe next time!!) The casino was disappointing as the minimum bet for each game was $5. A bit pricey for people wanting to try the games out and have a wee flutter on holiday. Most of the tables were empty each night which speaks for itself. I spoke to one guest who had complained and was advised she could bet for $1 minimum and was advised she was the only person on board who had complained about this. I liked the fact that we were advised which nights were formal nights. I also liked that people could opt out of this as its not everyone's cup of tea. We had brought our Sunday best so we joined in on both nights just to enhance the experience a little. Some people may not be happy with this but you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. There are two adult pools (one in the solarium and one in the main pool area) there is a kids pool and also a water feature for kids. There is a pool bar and lots of pool butlers coming round to offer the bar service. There is always a plentiful supply of towels in each pool area. There are sunbeds around the pools and also on the upper decks. Despite the ship being so busy we were always able to get a sunbed even on sea days. There are several shops on board selling the usual Cigs. alcohol and designer bags at the cheapest prices I have seen (approx. £20 for 200 cigs and £13 for a litre of Smirnoff. There is also a vast range of designer watches, handbags, clothes etc. Each night there is a deal on a specific range and special sales events which is advertised in advance. Excursions are varied but quite pricey so we opted to do our own thing. We managed fine with local trains and buses being easy to use and a fraction of the price of the excursions. Overall we had a fantastic time for our first cruise and would definitely do another.   Read Less

Just spent 14 nights on the Eclipse and was a amazing choice too being our very first cruise. We a group of 4 ( 2 couples ) all being novices when it comes to cruising. My thoughts as follows :- Boarding . A complete breeze ! Very well organised no problems at all. Cabin. We both had inside rooms ( 8143 & 8145 ) which meet all our needs, Comfy , Plenty of storage space , Very nice bathroom and kept clean by our Stateroom Steward Lucy. Dining. We ate in the Moonlight Sonata room 12 out of the 14 nights and had a fantastic experiance , Very good service , Fantastic food . If we had a complaint . and it's only minor, it would be that the time between courses can be a bit short. Would have liked a little longer to fully enjoy the previous dish. On some occasions the next course would be in front of us within 2 minutes. We also dined " out " in the Tuscan Grill which was an extra charge but was worth it with again stunning food and great service. Ocean view Cafe. Was very good with excellent choice and variety. Can be busy for breakfast and the wait for certain eggs / toast can be a bit long but didn't cause us any undue stress. Overall this venue was very good. Entertainment. Again overall very good and very enjoyable. Theater shows were first class , West End style shows, Tribute act's , Singers / comedians were all good fun. The in house band were below par as were the DJ's in the Quasar " night club " . Many times we stopped in the Quasar to find it empty or people sitting there looking bored as the music was bad. 70's / 80's / 90's would have gone down well as would 60's but why he was playing rap / re mix / recent music i don't know . The DJ never took the hint as people walked in and out and left the dance floor empty. We even tried later times and it was still empty ??? We weren't looking to party late in to the night but just to have a drink and a sing song. Overall . We throughly enjoyed our first cruise and would have no hesitation in recommending this ship to anyone. Already looking to go again but will have a window room this time !! Footnote. Can Celebrity please sort out the Internet charges please ? Totally over the top , Probably the biggest moan we heard from other passengers, Not a deal breaker but would have been nice to post a few pictures of our holiday from the ship as all our friends and family were waiting and considering the amount the holiday was costing 15 minutes free internet would have been fantastic. Started our cruise with a night in the Hilton Southampton so we avoided the cramped parking at the dock. We were worried because of the times they sent to us to board, which was three o'clock. We arrived about twelve and walked straight on to the ship more aless. Not a problem in site. The ship as always was lovely although it has stated to look a bit tired, but the fact it's going into dry dock will sort that out. Our room was very nice, it was as always clean and tidy. It was a bit noisy on docking days because we were at the front of the ship. The entertainment is not always at its best, the acts move around the ship and if you like one particular group then you have to move with them. They also put a Dj on at 11 which is fine on its own but a guy with a elaborate set of drums set up next to him which really would be fine in a night club setting! Then you would see people from 50+ get up and go. The teenagers loved it but again they should have been in the night club, not in the main dance hall. The restaurant was fantastic, we chose to dine at the same time each night and got the same table. Our waiters were brilliant they couldn't do enough for us. We also noticed that the staff ratio had been cut down. We still enjoyed ourselves and would use the ship again.   Read Less

This was our sixth cruise, and our second with Celebrity. We chose this cruise for the itinerary, and the offer of the classic drinks package and onboard spend. Our expectations were high following a wonderful cruise on Celebrity Century last year, and by and large this one did not disappoint although there was room for some improvement. Embarkation was smooth and quick with no hanging around. We parked off-site (booked independently) and were bussed in from the other side of Southampton Water. I'm not sure if I would use this service again - it was rather slow (a lot of waiting for the bus to the ship, and back again after the cruise). It was significantly cheaper than the on-site parking option though, so I suppose you have to weigh up whether you want to save time or money. Our verandah cabin was on deck 9 midships. Very comfortable and plenty of room for three adults and all our clothes. The double bed was huge and very comfortable, and the sofa bed was made into a single bed for our daughter which she also found very comfortable and did not take up any extra room in the cabin when it was made up. Having the tea and coffee making facilities in the cabin is a nice touch. The food was delicious and very well presented. We ate in the main dining room almost every evening (went to the buffet one evening having returned exhausted from a wonderful day in Rome and too tired to get changed for dinner). We were on the early sitting for dinner (18:00) which for me was a bit early. I hope to persuade my husband to try anytime dining next time. Our waiters Silva and Ghosh were very friendly and attentive, as was our sommelier Ivonne, and we never had to wait long to be served for either food or drink. Two of us had the classic drinks package and this allowed us to drink limitless amounts of wine by the glass at dinner - Ivonne would top up our glasses at regular intervals without having to be asked. Our daughter does not drink much alcohol so she would drink water or a soft drink with dinner. We ate breakfast and lunch in the Oceanview buffet, there was always enormous choice and the food was fresh and tasty. I have to follow a strict gluten-free diet and this was well catered for at dinner, with the menu indicating which items were gluten-free. We did not eat in the speciality restaurants - why pay extra when the food in the main dining room is more than good enough? My only disappointment was that our maitre d' was not very visible and therefore difficult to find to talk about my dietary requirements. This was in stark contrast to our last Celebrity Cruise, where the maitre d' was often to be seen and was very approachable to ask for special requests. With regard to the drinks package, we found that information on what was included was hard to come by. Guest relations gave us a list, but it was not exhaustive, so we used to ask before ordering. We didn't feel embarrassed to do this - better to ask than to be faced with an unexpected bill to sign. The inclusion of bottled water was very useful. However I would not purchase the package if it was not included, and would probably prefer to pay less for the cruise than have the drinks package included as I am not a big drinker. Entertainment on this cruise was excellent, with a good amount of variety and the standards generally very high. We went to almost every evening show - my favourite by far was the ventriloquist Gareth Oliver, whose act was quite unique and made me laugh more than I had in a long time. I did not enjoy Bobby Davro - I felt his act was out of date and rather near the mark for a family audience. Other entertainment on board included Les DeMerle and his jazz band. I am not a fan of jazz but Les and his beautifully singing wife had me converted. We also enjoyed Steve Womack, the late night comedian and singer who was very funny. There were plenty of activities on board. We particularly enjoyed the film lectures by Howard Lanning, the lectures about the ship by the staff captain and a former engineer, and we took part in one quiz and also played bingo, although I felt that this was quite expensive ($25 minimum per session). I was disappointed that the backstage theatre tour was only available to Select and Elite Captain's Club members. This was one of a few instances where there was a noticeable "class" difference, something which I hoped had been eliminated in cruising but seems to be creeping back. My husband enjoys a little flutter in the casino but very few people seemed to use it so there was little atmosphere and we did not spend long there (just as well for the wallet!). The Hot Glass Show is a wonderful addition on this ship. The glass artists gave several demonstrations during the cruise and made some beautiful pieces, some of which were auctioned at the end of the cruise for charity. They also raffled some pieces at the end of some of the demonstrations, and my daughter was lucky enough to win a unique piece which now has pride of place at home. We made limited use of the loungers and swimming pools, we always managed to find somewhere to lie or sit when we wanted to, although the rampant reservation of loungers which were subsequently not used for long periods (or people not disposing of their towels when they had finished with loungers) was a little irritating. As mentioned previously, one of the reasons we chose this cruise was for the ports of call. We did not take any shore excursions, choosing instead to make our own way in each port. With some careful planning this worked very well, and I fulfilled my wish of visiting the Colosseum, beating the ticket queues by going to the Palatine Hill first and buying our tickets there - no queue! We felt the ship's excursions to be very expensive, the biggest rip-off being the $19 shuttle bus in Lisbon. If you are able-bodied, take the train from outside the port, either to the centre of the city or to the Belem Tower for €3.5 return! Or if you are really fit, walk! We walked one way to the Belem Tower and took the train back. The retail options on board were very disappointing. The choice in the Celebrity souvenir shop was limited, and was stocking souvenirs from its previous cruise to Norway rather than souvenirs from the Mediterranean. The perfume and beauty shop was closed for the first half of the cruise, and the Michael Kors shop was closed for refurbishment until two days before the end of the cruise. When it did finally open it was very expensive and the choice of stock (handbags and clothes) disappointing. My other disappointment was the lack of visibility of the officers and senior crew members. At the Captain's Club welcome party they seemed to visibly shy away from talking to passengers. This was in contrast to Celebrity Century last year where staff from the captain down seemed to be everywhere, and always coming forward to chat with passengers. How I miss Captain George and Cruise Director John! Overall we enjoyed this cruise and the beautiful ship very much, improvements in retail and staff interaction with guests would make it even better. Read Less

My wife & I really enjoyed our first cruising experience. The organisation, food, entertainment, ambience & service was all top class. We met interesting people and joined in many lectures/activities. The cruise Director Sue Denning was brilliant - seemingly everywhere ensuring all worked as scheduled! We chose right to have booked a balcony Stateroom which had good use as we were blessed with sunny weather apart from a day in Florence when we got soaked! The only minor niggle was a need to rush the ending of our 8.30pm meal sitting to get to the 10.30pm show...it would be better if start time was 10.45pm for the nightly 45min shows. The shows were of good standard & variety with 3 formal shows plus individual artists. We particularly liked ‘showman’ pianist Perry Grant & attended his shows most evenings before dinner. He has many loyal fans who follow him on cruises over the years.The El Bacio coffee shop was one of our favourite haunts during the day...with tempting cakes always on offer! This venue could do with being enlarged to cope with demand. We were on a fixed table of 8 for dining and had a nice mix of guests. Many of the Brits (70% compared to North Americans 30%) chose to wipe out gratuities and use envelopes on the final day. We felt this was unfair on many other staff around the ship who were truly superb…so we allowed the automatic $12 pp pd to stand. Although you can follow the progress of your onboard account on the TV…the accounting is confusing with a mirror of each person…and even the final printed listing doesn’t provide a full break down of exact drinks etc purchased. Overall the cruise exceeded expectations. We have already booked a Carribean cruise in Jan 2015 on the same ship! Read Less

This was our second Celebrity cruise, having previously had a week on the Solstice in the Caribbean. That was impressive and relaxing. This time, it was two weeks around the Mediterranean. Two weeks is long time on a boat you might think but luckily we enjoy the opportunity to do nothing. This cruise attracted a much older demographic (I'm mid 30's) and don't underestimate what that means, although it's beyond the control of Celebrity. So, the basics. We embarked at Southampton. Really smooth operation. Cases taken in the car park and the terminal is literally across the street. Check in was a breeze (make sure you setup everything online) and we perhaps waited 20mins in the lounge until we were allowed on. So by 12.30pm we were across the gangplank. For cruises novices (some in our party were) the 'going aboard' process is a little chaotic. Celebrity offer you a glass of fizz and then you're allowed throughout the ship. But there is often a bottle neck and alot of confusion about where to go. We knew the layout of the boat, so headed aft for the elevators. I find it's best to go topside as quick as possible and if you can find a corner for lunch in the buffet, even better. Cabins were available sooner than expected too. We stayed in a Aqualcass cabin - knowing that this has some obvious perks, such as Blu (restaurant) and the Spa access. The cabins are also higher up and forward, near the spa. The cabins on the Eclipse are pretty comfy. Alot is made of the storage space and there is loads - enough for 2 weeks worth of clothes and shoes. It was all very clean and in good condition. The bed was large (king size, albeit with curved corners) and the whole place feels roomy enough. The balcony is a good size too. Enough space to lie out. They actually give you reclining loungers unlike some lines that only give you upright chairs. We never had issues with the cabin. Everything worked (ok, one light and the phone stopped working but were fixed sharpish) and it was made up and cleaned like clock work, even if we stayed on the balcony. Only tiny issue was that some of the added value amenities (binoculars, slippers, tote bag etc) had to be asked for...some only turning up in the second week. But we were given double rations of canapés and mineral water, so I'll let that slide. On a wider note, we had breakfast almost everyday in Blu to avoid the buffet crush...and it's worth it. Also had dinner there most nights. Excellent service and classy food. Smaller portions but the attention to our party was amazing. Occasional nights we dined in the 'speciality' restaurants. Now these need some context; we had a dinner package. So, if you like theatre and flamboyance with your food give these a go. But the food wasn't much better than Blu; just different. Murano is cited as THE gourmet eatery. But it's more about lavish decor and constant theatrical service. The opposite is of course true in a Michelin starred establishment but this is a cruise ship. I'd avoid Qsine if you want a quiet meal. It's really full on. Fun but not worth it if you want to be left alone. The only one worth the true effort/cover charge is Tuscan Grille. The view form the aft is amazing at sunset. We dined early just to enjoy it. Its a slightly more relaxed ambience too. And then there's the buffet. I realise it serves a purpose and people love the perceived value for money but on this cruise it was chaos. The quality of the food was pretty good. The repetition is managed well. But the pace by which the other quests moved around the stations was maddening. Queues formed and people dithered around in circles not realising that the food is the same on both sides. Again, this is the guest's not Celebrity's fault. But some crowd control might be helpful? Amenities wise, we enjoyed the calm of the coffee shop, the solarium and the Cellar Masters club. It was mostly too windy to sit out on deck so we also hid away in the relaxation room at the end of deck 11. But the decks in good weather are extremely crowded. Cheek by jowl. I have no idea why they think we'd pay $000's to literally sit inches from partially clothed strangers! The old argument about the lawn being a waste of space is applicable here. We gave up sitting out by the pool when other guests were literally pressed up against us. Not great for a premium cruise line. We tolerated one half of a 'show' from a guest act. The ship's own company was dreadful. The hot glass show too was passable but having seen it before, I have no idea why anyone thought this would be a great longterm entertainment event. Used the gym often; it's very well equipped and has a great location looking out over the bow. In terms of ports only Livorno and Civitavecchia need excursions - there is nothing to do locally. The others have opportunities accessible from the ship. Genoa was special case with a really crappy walk to the developed harbour area, which was saturated with street sellers. Not nice. And then the negatives. We saw and felt the customer service slide some what in the second week. As if the crew were getting bored. Orders took longer and the restaurant (Blu) was more chaotic. They also ran out of some fruit and weirdly Budweiser (?). As we had an AQ Class cabin we were called to say we had a $60 discount for Spa treatments. When we enquired at the Spa reception, the woman couldn't have been less helpful. She had no idea what we were referring to and said she needed to check with her manager. They called us a few hours later, when we told them to get lost. Total break down in sales/communications. We also had a awkward run in with the manager of the Bistro; walking up for a table, we were asked if we were on the wait list. We asked what the wait was (amazed people would actually wait 40mins for a crepe)...and then noticed there were several (not one or two) empty tables. We asked why they were empty and the manager said bluntly he was 'waiting for people to turn up'. How long he'd wait was anyone's guess. He clearly didn't understand the logic that a wait list only works if people turn up on time. Really backward. And rude. We then had the worst food service experience for a LONG time in Blu. With two meals being served with plastic AND then metal pieces in them. We of course complained and the waiter, chef, and maitre'd all came to table to gush apologies. But with no offer of compensation/credit etc. We had to ask for the wine to be comp'd. Then wouldn't do this, instead offering us a bottle of champagne the following night. Which wasn't the point. They were then obsessed with making sure we filled in the survey card based on all the OTHER meals we'd enjoyed. Really tacky. Last gripe was during a port day, we went down to deck 2 to access the gangway, we turned left out of the elevators following a sign 'gangway'. However, we didn't realise that we had strayed into the crew area (them having left a door open) - until we noticed the Celebrity staff propaganda charts and the horrified stares of the off duty waiters. We were eventually accosted by an officer who both apologised and chastised us, wanting to know what we were doing wandering around down there - to which we said 'trying to get out!' (we had a wheelchair user in our party, so weren't ambling around for no reason). So, some really crappy security and customer service right there. Overall it was a pleasant and well served cruise. The whole selling point for Celebrity is attention to detail, which for the most part they do really well. Even the disembarkation was well managed. There are elements that are pretty trashy (smoking areas, junk food, flash mob dancers) but most aspects stand up to 'you get what you pay for'. Saying that, I don't think we'd sail with Celebrity again, plenty of others to try. Read Less

This was our first adventure on a Celebrity ship, having previously always been faithful to one of their competitors- Princess. We found the Eclipse to be an very modern ship with the interior decor being especially engaging. The artwork one would encounter in the stairwells - yes we took the stairs a lot - both much quicker than waiting for a lift and better for the legs ladies - was particularly mesmerising e. g a glass box filled with multicoloured knitted balloons just waiting for some athlete to attempt the inflation process. The latter installation reminded me of a quirky emergency facility - only break glass and inflate in emergency situations! Other enchanting inclusions - the lawn club, the glass blowing shows, admiring the skills of the bartenders in the Molecular cocktail bar, the Ice bar with real ice counter tops etc etc Our balcony cabin was very comfortable and offered plenty of storage space -the over the bed aircraft style lockers were a bonus . We had some issues with the TV volume controls part way through the cruise but the whole TV was replaced within an hour or so - no problem. Great cabin stewards - both cheerful and helpful. We chose anytime dining in one of the main dining rooms as opposed to the fervently advertised speciality restaurants. 98% of the time our decision was vindicated with the food on offer on only one evening being leather disappointing. The Speciality restaurants were US$45 per person and Q sine particularly rather gimmicky e.g order on an Ipad, meal in a wooden box . Why? The entertainment was hit and miss as with all cruises - we preferred to listen to one of the bands on board - Who's Carter Hayes ? Great sound and took requests. Having said that the Chinese illusionist appearing in the main theatre was incredible ! Never had a problem accessing machines in the gym and the panoramic seaview was an enticement to keep attendance regular. Port excursions were well organised and enjoyable - notable mentions included Monte Carlo , Florence and Pisa in the one day. We also loved Gibraltar although we walked into town organised our own tour. Embarkation and disembarkation were smooth and timely. Overall the cruse was very relaxing and dilemma free. We arrived at Southamton Docks about 11.15 excellent signposting told us where to park. A lorry took our suitcases away and we walked over to check in. I was amazed how smooth this was. Checking in and boarding happened like a dream and before I knew what was happening we were on the ship. We were encouraged Togo up to the restaurant where we had a light lunch, we could have had anything and everything it was Allen offer. Luckily we sat by a couple who been on the .eclipse before who gave us some good pointers and told us what would happen next. At 1pm it was announced out staterooms were ready and so we made our way tour room on Deck 8. What a lovely cabin, plenty big enough for us and with a lovely verandah . Our cases arrived a little while later and we then explored the ship. We had select diing and therefore went to dinner when we wanted, we never ever queued although we did see queues at times. We went to the gym most morning and had breakfast in the healthy bar outside the gym which was quiet and did smoothies and sugar free cereals etc. A couple of mornings we had breakfast in our cabin but given we went to to the gym most mornings it was easier to have breakfast after the gym. On days at sea if you left it too late it could sometimes be tricky getting a sun bed, but for us this was no big deal and if we really wanted a bed we got out there early! The entertainment was fantastic, something for everybody, apart from the guy who played in the piano bar. he was not our taste, but then you cannot please all of the people all of the time. We went on two organised tours and they were fine, we preferred to do our own thing. Our. Cabin steward Gelcy was kindness itself, he was so helpful and often left towels in various shapes on the bed. One evening we came back to find a frog with sunglasses on, which did make us laugh. I loved the whole two weeks, my Husband got a little bored but then I expected him to.
