we were told the marella celebration was small and friendly that it was !! but in rough seas it was like a cork ( i thought the caribbean was calm ) foolish me it was my first cruise with a food and drink package you can eat and drink all day and most of the night service was excellent but they had far too many quizes on every topic, entertainment was excellent king in hemmingways was brilliant he will go far embarkation smooth and easy far too many photos at expensive prices we all have phones with cameras now do not need more paper photos shore excursions from ship expensive much cheaper to do it yourself but as long as you give plenty of time to get back to the ship and dont leave it till the last minute decide what time you are going and more important coming back some of the cruise terminal terminals are poor some like st vincent and tortola are excellent Read Less

I could hardly express how great it was! It really exceeded my expectations. We were on the Caribbean Gems cruise. Indeed, the ship is old but does not ruin anything. The maintainenace is excellent, everything is cleaned every day and every hour. We were in a cabin on deck one and it was quite rocky especially during the first night (it was the day at sea) but we got used to it quickly. The cabin was not very spacious but there was enough place for all our stuff. We were a little disappointed that we bed was not double and we had to sleep on separate beds. We had a window and could watch the waves crashing on the ship, it was fascinating. Our cabin steward was great, he cleaned the acbin twice a day and arranged the towels in the shape of animals :) The dining was perfect. Most of the dishes in Lido restaurant (the buffet) were not something really special but there was a great variety and the food was always available, fresh and warm. Mistal's restaurant provided excelent cuisine and service. The lobster and the beef were so delicious. Kora La was not as special as we expected - you could skip it. The entertainment was superb. There was something for everyone - live performances, singing, dancing, theathe, trivia, karaoke and so on. For me, the funniest moments were when the staff themselves were part of the show - they amused us a lot and you can tell that they enjoyed themselves. Speaking of the staff - they are thoroughly amazing and make you feel fantastic. Now that the cruise ended, I miss the ship, I miss the sea, I miss the staff, everything. this is definitely the worst part... Don't worry about getting seasick. I have problems when travelling by car and I often have nausea but I did not feel bad during the cruise. It is just as if you are a little drunk and cannot keep balance ;) The shore excursions were amazing too, especially Seven Sisters in Grenada and Swimming with stingrays in Antigua. The organization of embarkation, excursions and everything was punctual and smooth. All in all - it is soooooo good, do not hesitate to do it! Read Less

Marella Celebration Caribbean Cruise Decided on a cruise and stay with friends starting with the 1 Caribbean Gems cruise on the 17 th January from La Romana in the Dominican Republic followed by a 1 week stay at the Riu Macao in Bavaro. Flights on the Dreamliner once again could not be faulted with ample food, drinks and interactive entertainment on the monitor. Transfer to the Ship was extremely quick as all cruise passengers bypassed the arrivals hall and were transferred to the waiting coaches ( not even a passport check ) Were we actually in the Dominican !! Transfer time to the ship was only 20 minutes or so and the checking in process only took a matter of 20 minutes followed by welcome photos !! When you have been on the go since 5.00am in the morning do you really want photos before you get on the ship!! Our cases arrived within minutes of being shown to our cabins. We had opted for an upgrade to a level 7 Deluxe cabin with a large double bed, settee, bath/ shower and large windows and totally unobstructed views. We knew that our cabin had an interconnecting door to the adjacent cabin ( not our friends ) but had taken a roll of “ Gaffer Tape” as suggested on a trip advisor should noise be heard from the adjacent cabin, to tape up the door edge. As it was it happened it was easier to push folded newspaper into the gap - we didn’t hear anything from our neighbours the whole week. That evening for ease we dined in the Lido self service Restaurant and the choice of food was reasonable and overall of good quality. We also chose to dine there at lunch time and breakfast time with the breakfasts being exceptional. We dined in the Mistral Restaurant on an evening and this was a much better dining experience with a varied menu and exceptional service, also they have an open meal time arrangement where you just turn up at whatever time you want. We had decided not to go for the all inclusive drinks package as we were going to be fully all inclusive for our 2nd week at the Riu Macaoa Hotel and decided to “ take it easy “ on the ship! This we felt to be the right decision when we noticed that over 50% of drinks were subject to a supplement if on “ All Inclusive “ Typical Bar prices along with the supplements if on “ All Inclusive “ are Jonnie Walker Red £4.20 No Supplement Dewers White Label £4.30 All Inclusive £2.50 Supplement Zombie Cocktail £4.90 No Supplement Moscow Mule £4.90 All Inclusive £2.50 Supplement John Smiths Pint £3.95 No Supplement John Smiths 500mm Can £4.00 - All Inclusive Supplement £3.30 !!!!!! It should be noted that some water, coffees and soft drinks were also subject to a supplement. The evening entertainment in the main Broadway show lounge was of an extremely high standard. They advertise the shows as “West End Productions“ and they were, with all the animation crew giving 100%, the quality of their singing voices being exceptional. The entertainment in the various bars etc was equally good. As far as trips were concerned we did our own thing and used taxis which worked out at least half the price of the organised trips and visited exactly the same destinations. Worth a mention was George on St Lucia ( email georgietx479@gmail.com ) He was near the other terminal to where we docked ( past the glass pyramid building ) Also Glen Roy on Antigua ( email glenmon8@hotmail.com ) who gave us an incredible tour over to Nelsons Dockyard and surrounding areas, and was more interested in showing us the sights rather than watching the clock. He was quite a way up the main pedestrian street when you get of the ship. I can fully recommend them both and would suggest you email them first and organise a trip as you will not be disappointed with either of them - It will also save you “ running the gauntlet “ of 100s of taxi drivers and agents !! St Maarten was a beach day as it was only a 20 minute walk to glorious white sands and the warm Caribbean sea. As we were the only ship in that day we were able to secure some sun loungers and parasols for the day - if more than one ship is in I would suggest you take your towels just in case. Another ship, or should I say Yacht did turn up, this was the Eclipse belonging to Roman Abromovich with estimated costs following refits and addition of a submarine etc at 1.2 Billion Dollars - I don’t think their were any sun beds left for him though !! A word of caution on Guadeloupe - due to large Costa ship being in port at the same time their were very few taxis about, as such we ended up with a particularly bad taxi /driver / experience. Do not use a white 8/10 seater Reg BG424-EE, COQUASHANE Also note that on Guadeloupe they only accept the Euro. Overall an excellent Cruise with great ports of call and we would go on this smaller ship cruise again. I have posted a separate report on our stay at the Riu Macao Read Less

This was my first experience and will probably be my last due to Costa Favolosa. At first impression, this was a WOW. But the good impression lasted two days only. This ship is very poorly administered and lacks organization. 2,000 people eating at the same time is very hectic. The food was mediocre and not varied at the buffet, same food all week. We were charged for water. I can understand that you have to pay for alcohol/sodas, but water is the essence of life, please, this should be free. So we filled our water bottles at the cafeteria each day. Entertainment at night in the theatre was very good but not enough. We were bored most of the time at night and tried to find some entertainment. The shows were short and not always good. Positive: the room was very clean, and the steward friendly, nice and beautiful ship. Certainly no luxury trip, will never go on Italian cruise line. Read Less

Just came back from my first Costa cruise and comparing with Royal Caribbean, this is definitely way below...Just to summarize: *Bad service overall, worst attitude I've ever seen on a cruise ship. People unhappy, just walking around without a single hello. Had to clean a table many times to sit down, even though employees were close by, they didn't bother. Once, I asked them and they told me "well, we are busy, so it's going to take some time"...no need to say, I did it myself. *Food, just ok *Entertainment, if you offer 11 nights cruises, have a different entertainment for every night. We had to watch 2 times the same shows.... *Unorganized...terrible organization to get out in the ports of call, never on time with the food and opening the restaurants. Dinner never took less than 2 hours and we never ate at the same pace...some where getting second course, as other just receiving the first... The worst part is definitely the food and beverage overall..... Won't cruise again with Costa, that's for sure... Read Less

The MSC cruise a few years ago was my worst cruise, this COSTA was the second worst cruise I ever did. After booking I read all the bad reviews so I had contacted the cruise line and they did charge 75% of what I paid so I decided to go anyway. After the MSC I thought it could not be worse, and I was right, second worst! Mainly the food is terrible. Breakfast ordinary and long lines waiting for the food in the buffet restaurant. In the main dining room breakfast almost every time cold and long waiting time. Once I had to wait 35 minutes to get my breakfast, my 3 friends were ready a long time when finally my food came. Food in the main restaurant was really bad. I, and a few others from my table went to the buffet restaurant after dinner had been served. We did try but no taste, sorry, bad taste en mostly cold as well. Once we were too late to have some food in the buffet at night so we could eat a pizza with salad on the second floor.....they charged for it... All other cruises I have done there was a 24 hour snack! Other bad experiences, after 1 day ALL computers in the internet section were down for 5 days!!! Due to embarkation on 4 islands the crew is doing drill with new guests. Is OK and I understand but I don't understand why sometimes closing ALL bars and eateries for 1 1/2 hour because of the drill... This was the 12th cruise I have been on, all American cruise lines and they were all perfect!! The worst two were Italian ships, they don't have it at all!! shame for the cruise industry there are some bad companies like these. I booked already a 13th one, celebrity summit n December, FOR SURE it will be better. I still love cruising, but no Italian ship anymore, please consider American cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, etc. Read Less

This was our first cruise on Costa. We were apprehensive because we never cruise on Costa before. Favolosa is a beautiful and great boat, maybe the decor is a bit to roccoco for my taste but the service is top notch. We were upgraded to a suite with balcony which quite large, with many closets, a great bath with 2 sinks and a jacuzzi tub and shower. As were on a suite we had a choice of different pillows. The bed was king size. We took the private valet service for 100 Euros which included fruit and chocolates everyday, a bottle of Prosecco the first day and a dinner at the Club Favolosa. Our valet was from India and he was fantastic. The balcony was big and two large lounge chairs and a table.. I used the jacuzzi tub every night before the show and dinner. The shows were all very nice, we loved them. Now let's talk about the food: - Breakfast: we took our breakfast every morning at the suite free of charge. Eggs Benedictine were fantastic as well as the waffles, breads and pastries. The orange juce was good and the coffee excellent. - We usually had lunch at the buffet which for us was quite good (as we love Italian food). The selection were salads, foccacias, various meats, fried calamari, cod, etc. They had good mini cannolli and great panna cotta.. At the aft pool, we usually had a beer and a pina colada (we did not take any drink package). La merenda (afternoon snack). This was quite good, you had a choice of foccacias, mini sandwiches, pastries and cookies (coffee was free as well as water). Dinner: for dinner, I have a mixed review. Some nights, it was very quite good, others not. For example, we did not like the Bruno Barbieri dinner of 2016 (it changes every year. We tried the 2017 one on Costa Diadema which was excellent). For instance our dinner at Club Favolosa one night was awesome. As starter, we had lobster Ceasar Salad and as main fantastic lamb chops. As dessert, a great panna cotta. To drink, we had a carafe of Chianti red wine. During the shows we drank Spritz or Prosecco. Read Less

My husband and I just returned from a one week cruise on the Favolosa. We have sailed on almost 20 cruises with most of the major lines so have a good base for comparison. Overall we enjoyed the cruise but there were several small irritations that were sufficiently annoying that we would not sail with Costa again. The positives: cabin was very nice and kept immaculate by the steward; same goes for the ship itself. We found the food much better than expected based on the reviews. The buffet does tend to be crowded at breakfast but there are 7 different lines so they move quickly. There was ample choice of hot and cold food including 3 omlette stations. There were fewer options in the dining room than on Hal or RCI but what we did order was served hot and was delicious despite being previously frozen in most cases. The negatives: we found the staff generally to be curt. The waiter in the dining room only spoke when we asked him a question and was occassionally sarcastic. As 2 of a handful of english speakers on the ship we needed help understanding the menu (which they continually gave us in french). He was fluent in french and english but made us feel we were inconveniencing him. The cabin steward was much the same. No good morning or hello once over the week. When I asked him for english programs rather than french he said he was too busy and to go myself to the guest services desk to get them(which was always busy), same for the broken chair on the balcony. After I made a face about it he said he would take one from another balcony and give them our broken one which he did do after a day or so.We also found getting on and off the ship very disorganized most days. One day they had a staff drill during the peak time we were getting off the ship in the morning. They had one person scanning virtually everyone getting off and back on the ship. It took half an hour to get off the ship and everyone was furious. The other thing we found as English speakers, the entertainment was limited. There was a lot of italian opera type singers. We knew that when we chose Costa so its not a complaint about Costa but one of the reasons we would not likely sail with again. Read Less

Embarkation was slow and a little chaotic but bags were waiting at our cabin. Don't stay in 8312, we were disturbed by the constant scraping of chairs in the cafe above. Cabin kept immaculate by our steward, towels changed daily and beach/pool towels on request. Plenty of storage, surprisingly spacious and a large comfortable bed. Very few TV channels. Tatty balcony and scratched windows. Main restaurants were good, waiters fantastic, food just nice not amazing. A couple of fun entertainment nights in the restaurant made the holiday. Most of the staff were pretty helpful but very slow service and not so friendly at the pool bar. Buffet restaurants were noisy and chaotic. Very average food. Holiday camp style entertainment at the pool venue, theatre was a little better but still very amateur. We decided to do one organised trip just to see what it was like. We hung around in a queue for over an hour before disembarking, were not advised that the shops would be closed on a Sunday but were dumped in the town in the Dutch side of StMaarten anyway. The trip was supposed to be English speaking but the Italian tourists on the coach were extremely rude speaking over the tour guide who did not do much to help.Photos/videos of our trip for sale were extortionate. The cruise line is money grabbing to say the least. There were very few English speakers on this cruise so if that bothers you be careful what trip you book. After a few days of being shoved out the way and trying to do the normal Brit queuing thing, we just had to give up and become one of the crowd... Not nice !!! Everywhere was very clean and pretty well organised. Disembarkation at La Romana was shocking, waiting for hours, for immigration, who stamped the paperwork and chucked it on the floor. We will not be cruising with Costa again. Read Less

Sailed Feb.9 to 16th for the first ever cruise, lovely ship and cabin. the itinerary was absolutely perfect, enjoyed every bit of the time spent off ship on the various islands. Dining was elegant and comfortable thanks to the wait staff that spoke ENGLISH and were happy and pleasant. Two of our four shore excursions that where pre-booked were canceled, with no apology. Embarkation seemed to be easy and simple, but soon found out the so-called Information-Reception Desk people DO NOT inform you of anything, even when asked specific questions. (example) The final disembarkation procedure arrived to our cabin in French, so I went to Reception-Information to get it in English and was told to my face that unfortunately it not printed in English but he will be happy to translate the basics for me. On my way back to the cabin, my cabin Stewart approached with an apology for dropping the French sheet off and gave me one in ENGLISH.) We will not recommend this cruise to any persons that are not fluent in FRENCH for you seem to be treated as a insignificant. The Cabin Stewart, Wait staff, and Bartenders and the Beautiful islands are what we choose the keep with us on this trip. This was our first cruise but will not be our last just NOT with this cruise line. Read Less

This was our 6th cruise. We cruised with two other companies before : Carnival and Princess which were great. This was our first Costa cruise and will definitely be the last. We were very disappointed with our cruise ship: the food was very poor with no buffet option in the evening (closed early in the afternoon with only a very limited salad bar and dry pizza in the evening). Food in the dining room was bland, service slow and waiters unfriendly! No drinking water provided at the tables. You have to purchase bottled water (or other types of beverages) if you want to drink with your meal. At breakfast and lunch the buffet was like a zoo : overcrowded, difficult to find a table, staff systematically not yielding to passengers carrying food plates to their tables or picking up unfinished plates without first asking if we were done, barmen at every corner trying to sell you drinks not included with your cruise, empty orange juice or ice machines which, along with ice cream machines, were only accessible during specific and very short periods of time. Decks and pools were also overcrowded. Children running around and shouting in cabin corridors as late as 11h pm and later. The only positive aspect : The ports of call (La Romana, Catalina, Tortola, Martinique, Guadeloupe and St-Marteen) were great and most of them are not available through other cruise lines which is the reason why we picked this particular cruise in the first place...   Read Less
