We commenced what was supposed to be our Viking Grand European river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam with a Prague extension on 08/08/18. 3 days prior to the cruise departure from Budapest on 11/08/18, Viking emailed us advising that our planned overnight stay and sail away from Budapest as per the planned itinerary was changed due to low river levels. This was the start of our river cruise farce which I believe bordered on fraudulent behaviour by Viking. Namely, providing passengers with a vastly altered river cruise package holiday they knew they could not deliver according to their original product description and failing to advise passengers of the full extent of the impact and implications the river levels would have on their holiday. Viking had been watching the river levels in Europe for over 6 weeks prior to our departure date. Europe had been experiencing an extremely dry and hot summer and river levels were very low, Viking knew this but chose not to disclose the full extent of the situation, the difficulties passengers would face and the full impact on the itinerary. Passengers were not provided with real time facts, stopping them from making informed decisions on their travel arrangements. Our holiday commenced with a bus ride from Prague to Kormarno in Slovakia, not Budapest, to join our boat. This change to itinerary meant we never docked in Budapest overnight but were bused in for a coach drive by tour. From Budapest we were bused to Vienna to finally join our ship, the Bragi (we were actually booked on the Skadi). Viking had already repositioned some of their ships obviously to cover their bases and attempt to provide some extremely limited scenic cruising on some small parts of the Danube and Rhine. For the initial change we were offered a 25% reduction of the cruise portion on a future cruise but were also advised that we may have to do a ship swap later in the cruise. The swap did occur on 16/08/18 , we missed numerous listed port dock stays, we were transferred on numerous long bus rides to get to sights on the itinerary or remained docked in destinations like Passau for longer or alternate destinations like Mainz for longer periods. It was not scenic cruising, it was sleeping on board a ship, or completely missing out on the ports of Koblenz and Kindersdik. We were never told the entire truth about the situation, it was the Viking cover story that was continuously provided. On our last day, 24/08/18, we endured a 9 1/2 bus trip from Mainz to Amsterdam with a 1 hour walking tour of Cologne, delays of 2 hours waiting for buses that had gone to another dock area in error, a guide who did not wait for his tour group to exit the bus and took off across the street with at least half the group missing in Cologne. Many of us would have happily bypassed Cologne and been driven directly to Amsterdam. Despite requests, the Viking representative would not oblige. It was a total farce, the errors and arrangements made to rectify the errors became a major frustration for all passengers and I have never seen so many irate, angry passengers at the end of that trip. We will be demanding genuine compensation for the loss of our dream holiday as will many, many other fellow passengers. Sadly as we left Amsterdam on 25/0818 we met many people about to experience the same tour as ours in reverse, they told us they had already been advised by Viking that they would be receiving a 50% discount on a future cruise due to the changes to their itinerary. I chose this cruise because of its itinerary. From Budapest to Amsterdam along the Danube, Mein and Rhine rivers was a truly incredible journey. So much history and art. The acommodations were like a 5 star hotel and the food was excellent. The program director was tailor made for the job. He was a treat. Looking forward to my next cruise with Viking! The excursions that Viking has lined up at each destination are incredible. The hard part is deciding on which ones. Be sure to take as many as you can because they are worth it and will truly enhance your trip. I couldn't say more about the crew. The service they provide was outstanding. They were always there ready to take care of whatever you needs might be. The cabin was very accommodating and the bed very comfortable which was needed after a long day of walking around. And the evening entertainment was excellent. The pianist and his accompanying singer were very nice to listen to in the evening as you were winding down from all the days activities. Read Less

This cruise was highly recommended by our trusted AMA travel agent. My husband and I were not disappointed! From the moment our plane landed in Amsterdam we were treated to Viking’s amazing hospitality and friendly professionalism. The ship’s design was beautiful and exceptionally clean. Stunning river views were maximized throughout. We booked one of the two Explorer Suites which provided beautiful living space in addition to wrap around views. Dining on the Skadi was a delight. In addition to classic dining menu items, each evening featured regional cuisine selections which never disappointed. The dining room staff excelled in service as well as cuisine knowledge; this team went above and beyond to ensure a very pleasant dining experience. Guests were treated to beautiful music and songs by a marvellously talented duo; dancing the evening away while sailing to our next adventure was delightful. Our cruise director, Stein, was fantastic. He was a wealth of information on history, points of interest and culture of the regions we would be visiting. His sense of humour and boundless energy ensured an enhanced experience for all. We participated in each included port excursion as well as many of the optional ones. All were exceptional. We also added extended stays in Prague prior to sailing as well as in Amsterdam prior to returning home. We highly recommend doing any and all that a traveler’s time and budget allows- no regrets Read Less

Wanted to visit Christmas Marts in various cities. Cruise director was very mindful of our needs and was helpful all throughout the cruise. Cruise was excellent for all the stops. Easy to find the ship at various towns. Everything close to ship. Individual tour guides at each town did an excellent job describing the city and all we should see. Budapest was a wonderful city we were disappointed that we didn't come a few days sooner. Because of the length of time we spent traveling, when we got to ship we were beyond exhausted and after dinner went to bed. Enjoyed the wine and beer served at dinner. All the meals were excellent Wished we had more time in Vienna. So much to see in this great city. Wouldn't mind taking this river cruise again. It was very interesting and would see more things if we did it again. We would definitely recommend getting to Budapest a day or two before river cruise. This city is an amazing and interesting place to visit. Read Less

We started with a few extra days in Prague which is well worth visiting with so many sights, food and interesting shopping venues. We then headed to our embarkation point of Budapest where after dinner the enchantment of this cruise began with a cruise up and down the Danube River through the lit up city. It was a thrill to think that this was only the beginning. The Skadi was a wonderful ship with superb dining, fantastic crew, and outstanding service. There are superior food choices, wine with meals, gourmet deserts, and many of the meals include locally obtained produce. It is far too easy to find you have added a few extra pounds by trips end. Our cabin was on the lower level which gave us a very interesting viewpoint of the river, the shoreline and even ducks swimming by our large window. Our cabin was ample, comfortable and especially quiet. Ship noises and cabin neighbors were never even heard which was very representative of how well these ships are designed and built. Our Cruise Director and Hotel Manager could not have been better. They both made sure that they were there to answer any questions, provide services, and socialize with guests. It was very evident how much the crew likes what they do and who they work for when you see them working as a team. We were taking on supplies at one port and I witnessed them individually carrying supplies to the storerooms, not some but everyone, the hotel staff, the wait staff, the engineering staff and even the Hotel Manager, Frank, himself and the Captain. I have spent years around ships and I have never seen the Captain loading stores and provisions as part of the ship's team until this trip. The Captain told me that it is just part of the Viking package that everything works out the best for their passengers. The Shore excursions in every port are a valuable way of making sure everyone has a wonderful inclusive trip experience. Even the extra trips a good value as well as educational and fun. The entertainment provided was unique and appropriate for the local area and provided in an intimate lounge atmosphere. We were able to meet many wonderful shipmates and have continued to keep in touch and are hoping to maybe see them on a future cruise. We are already planning to travel with Viking again as soon as our schedule will permit. The problem may be how to choose between so many great destinations. Too many places, too little time. Thanks to our Captain and Crew, our Cruise Director and Hotel Manager, our cabin stewardess (who kept us clean and healthy) and our waiter (whose recommendations were right on every time and who kept our palates satiated and wine glass full), we had a trip full of memories. Just loved River Cruise. The sights on deck, the dining experience no preferred seating, the extremely helpful staff, the outings at each port, so well organized and finally the cleanliness everywhere on board’ and the very comfortable cabins. I do however suggest you do not take the outing at the baths in Budapest, they were not what we were expecting’ felt like just a big pool we have at home, other guests also felt the same way as they did not take us to the advertised place. Each port we visited we were greeted by tour guides who were well versed and were quite enjoyable. I would recommend River cruising to anyone who wants a relaxing trip and letting someone else do the planning. Sometimes it’s just fun to be so well served. We also enjoyed the casual feel of this particular cruise, you don’t need to get all dressed up if you wish to be casual or dressed up is also fine. If we were to start over would have booked a few extra nights in Amsterdam to visit since there was no time there at all, off the ship and straight to the airport for return flight. Can.t wait for our next trip. Mmm wonder where, Happy sailings Read Less

We had a great time. We traveled with old friends with whom we had taken two other trips. The service was terrific as was the staff in all areas of the ship. The meals were excellent and we loved the fact that we did not HAVE to change into fancy clothes for dinner unless we wished to do so. The side excursions were all excellent and the extra trips we took were well worth our time and a little extra cost. The size of the ship and the number of guests was what really made the difference for us when deciding to try a river cruise. We would do it again in a heartbeat. We took a cruise 2 years ago out of Venice on the Adriatic We loved what we saw and enjoyed family, but a cruise with under 200 people as the Viking River Cruise is wins hands down. Disembarking was a dream on this cruise with a bus within feet of the ship. Loved that! Read Less

We are not cruisers, per se, but the itinerary, the size of the ship and Viking's reputation spurred us to give it a shot. We've been on many guided tours around the world and rank Viking's Grand European Cruise as one of our best overseas vacations. The on-board staff were wonderfully helpful, professional and knew their stuff. We missed a connection because of bad weather--we went one way, our luggage another. They bent over backwards to ensure that our bags arrived before we set sail. We were impressed with most of the local guides, too. Excellent choices as far as the ports and shore excursions went. The entire tour was a history lesson of the most enlightening and entertaining nature. The options that we selected were most enjoyable and/or informative. Well worth the price. The ship was spotless, the service impeccable. A great crew! Did not rate Fitness and Recreation because we were too busy sopping up the culture and enrichment activities. The proof is in the pudding: we intend to do another Viking River Cruise in 2019. Read Less

Heard from others that they truly enjoyed this trip, so decided to try it. Was not disappointed at all. Days flew by quickly because we were so busy in a nice casual way. Up early for breakfast and then off to a tour each day. Some days were full tour days with some walk around and some on our own to wander. We had time to play cards with old friends and enjoyed meeting new ones. Freedom to enjoy the sundeck for most of the trip was great with one morning a guided tour on deck of both sides of the river. This was one of the highlights. Evening starting with a nice dinner with new and old friends and ended in the lounge. Some nights dancing to the lovely music and some nights playing team games or listening to guest musicians or a presentation of glass blowing or some educational theme. The staff were wonderful but have to highlight our cruise director. He was above excellent. He was well versed in every aspect of this adventure. There were no questions he could not answer and he took care of everyone's special issues. There was one time, someone was too long on a tour and missed their bus back to the ship. The lady could not walk with others who choose to walk back to the ship. The cruise director just called a cab for her and away she went. Another time a woman fell and broke her foot on the steps. One of the staff accompanied her to the hospital, acting as her interpreter and also being ready to pay for the bill, in case the injured person's insurance wouldn't cover it. All in all, with the diversity being offered, time was well spent in enjoyment, learning and meeting some wonderful people. I'd highly recommend Viking for their care of each individual person on board and of course what they offer. Read Less

This was our second river cruise with Viking and we liked the ease of being on the boat for 14 days with minimal packing and unpacking and cruising all of the rivers. So relaxing. While all the cities, sites, tours were incredible we liked being on the river seeing the world at 11mph the best. This was the "Easy Button" of all vacations that we have taken - it is no surprise this is the most favorite cruise they have. We all appreciated the educational, musical, and fun events in the evening. The history of the river was very interesting and educational. I dont know how the Viking staff could have done a better job of taking care of us - they seemed to be able to read our mind at times and when things didnt go as planned they changed the plans. We were on a day tour of Strassburg and on the way back to the meeting point we were informed the boat would be late due to getting through the locks so we all just met at a local bar and had drinks and mingled with the locals - a wonderful time was had by all. Would like to do the trip again except this time I would like to start in Amersterdam and go to Budapest and spend a couple of days in Amersterdam prior to getting onto the ship. Read Less

We had previously been on the Viking River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basil. Thoroughly enjoyed it and decided to take a longer cruise this time. Viking lives up to its advertising. The ship is spotless, Staff cannot do enough for you. I have been on "big" cruise boats and will never go back. Viking is our choice. We plan to make a Viking Ocean cruise December of 2018. This time Australia to New Zeland. The limited number of people makes for a much better experience. The river boats have a max of 190 guests and the ocean 998. this is manageable. The barman even knew what I liked to drink on the second night. Great service. The side trips vary. Some are free and some you need pay extra for. The side trips we paid for were worth every penny. Viking uses a microphone for its' guides, you have an earphone and always hear every word of the guide's presentation even at a distance. No having to get to the head of the group to hear what is going on. Read Less

The food was delicious, gourmet but not pretentious. The crew was very friendly and genuinely wished us to have a good time. One of the best things was sitting with other passengers at meals and during the delightful entertainment evenings and getting to know about them. We are American and chatted with Canadians and Australians. So as a bonus we learned about farming life in Canada and about how things are in Australia. We enjoyed the fact that we didn't have to dress up for meals or the evening, just nicer clothes than we had worn on our daily tours. This Grand European river cruise has been on my wish list for a long time. We started in Budapest on Saturday, May 6, the Skadi is a lovely ship, our cabin was nice, it would have been nice to have two chairs instead of one chair and a stool, but otherwise was comfortable. The dining was wonderful, I needed special foods because of allergies and Ivan was wonderful assisting me. The ship's entertainment was fun and the service outstanding. I was surprised at the many ships at each port we visited. Sometimes several ships had to raft and walk through to get ashore, once we had to climb up to the top deck and cross over the top deck of the adjacent ship, then descend down to get off the ship. The included shore excursions were great, those guides were outstanding and the choices of ports was good. I was disappointed in the paid excursion to the Lipizzaner horses, we did not realize we would not get to see them perform or exercise, instead we had a tour of the stables. For the price of euro 99, for "Behind the Scenes at the Lipizzans" it was not what I expected. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress tour was a disappointment too. I could have taken the Cable Car and walked through the Fortress for 8 euros instead of euro 49 because the so called guide who did a ridiculous skit as we walked through the outside to the Bier Garden where he left us to go tour on our own. Had it not been for these two excursions this would have been a 5 star cruise. There is so much history about WWII to be seen on this tour, I had read about the shoes memorial left along the Danube River in Budapest. The Skadi was anchored nearby. Seeing it saddened me to think this was done by the Nazi's. I loved seeing the castles and homes along the rivers. Cruising down the rivers and going through the locks was wonderful, it was exciting to watch the ship rise up and cross the Continental Divide then descend through the Main to the Rhine River. Passing the Lorelai and hearing the story was wonderful. Seeing the Windmills at Kinderdijk was interesting, there were too many people inside the mill to be able tours upstairs. Read Less

We choose this cruise to return to some of the places my wife and I visited during my military career some 30+ years ago. Found the cruise in your brochure and my travel agent recommended it. Everything went smoothly from arriving in Budapest to leaving Amsterdam 2 weeks later. The ship is wonderful and everything is clean and functional. The dining experiences were exceptional. The staff was outstanding and appeared to take an honest caring for you. The service they provided was what you would expect to receive in a 5 star resturant or hotel. The entertainment was satisfactory. The ports we stopped at and shore excursions were great. The best part of the trip for us was the small number of guests (87) to be around, and no children. I would highly recommend Viking and this type of river cruise anyone. We are looking into another cruise in the future. Read Less

Just returned from a Viking river Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. This was first river cruise and we must say that we were glad that we booked with Viking. We have done all kinds of big ship cruising which we have thoroughly enjoyed but we have now found a new experience that is even better. Although the price of a river cruise surpasses the cost of liner cruising it is a totally different experience and worth the difference in price. The biggest difference is that you are experiencing amazing scenery each and every day. There are no "sea days" where you only see water everywhere you look. Even though there are a couple of days(out of 15) where you don't dock, you are always seeing vistas of the lands that you are passing through. To begin with, the Viking crew was amazing. We sailed on the Skadi and every crew member was pleasant and helpful. Each and every one of them was pleasant and helpful and it made you feel totally comfortable and safe. The fact that you are mingling with only appprox 190 guests, makes the experience much more personal. After a few days, you almost know everyone on the ship and interact with them all on a personnel and collegial basis. The only regret that we had was that we did this trip a bit late in the season. We sailed on Oct 1st and as an afterthought it probably would have been better around the first part of September as the weather was a little cool and wet. However, we got through all that and still managed to enjoy ourselves. As for the cruise itself, the one nice thing is that Viking provides a tour at each stop which is included in your fees. There are also optional tours that are offered at an extra cost. The Viking provided tours had excellent guides that were very knowledgeable of the cities that we visited. The food that was presented was both plentiful and delicious and again, the wait staff in the dining room were exceptional. The ship itself was absolutely immaculate. The staff were continuously cleaning every aspect of the ship, from the hall ways, the open areas, to the top open deck area. We have never seen such attention to cleanliness throughout the ship. One of the things that impressed us was that every Viking staff member went out of their way to make the cruise enjoyable. One day stood out in our minds as to how they take care of their passengers. We were on a tour of a city and there was going to be a delay when the ship was available to pick us up(due to backups in the lock system) for about an hour. So, the cruise director arranged for us all 180 of us to go to a pub while we waited. As we arrived, several members of the crew were there to greet us and then we were provided free refreshments while we waited to re-board. A nice touch! We also tacked on a couple of days in Amsterdam after our cruise and again we experienced the attention that Viking pays to its passengers. To begin with, your bags are brought from your room directly to the transportation that will take you to your post stay hotel. (No looking and claiming your bags in a huge warehouse like a cruise ship). Once we arrived at the hotel, there was a Viking rep to greet us and to answer any questions that we had. They were there every day of our post cruise stay to provide assistance. Then of the final morning, they were then again present to make sure that everyone got off to the airport. Once we arrived at the airport, there was another Viking rep to greet us and make sure that we got to the proper check-in location for our flight home. To say the least, the service was amazing. Of course, there are pros and cons to each style of cruising. The setbacks to this type of ship is that there are no amenities to enjoy as on the bigger ships such as fitness rooms, saunas, spas, pools. However, these are intended to be more site seeing experiences. Another nice thing about these ships is that you don't have to go through the screening that you see on the big ships. You don't have to have your bags scanned and you are allowed to bring whatever you want to enjoy on your cruise. In fact, you are allowed to bring local wines on the ship and they will serve them to you without a corkage fee. In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise and are planning our next one. Read Less

We took the Grand European cruise because it was on sale, we wanted to take a last minute trip, and we had never done a river cruise. In February we had travelled through Australia on our own ,so we're looking forward to having someone else worry about the logistics. From the first day aboard, we were delighted. The service in our room and at the restaurant were wonderful. Each time we returned to our room, it had been refreshed. We always ate lunch and dinner in the same area so had the same two waiters. They were great. One afternoon, I asked for dome chocolate ice cream which wasn't on the menu. Our waiter brought vanilla with chocolate sauce. I thanked him, but told him I would skip dessert and maybe someone else would like this. About five minutes later he returned with chocolate ice cream which he had found in the neighboring sister ship. SERVICE!!! All but one of our included tours was excellent. The individual transmitters allowed us to hear all that our local guides had to share. Nothing was too strenuous. The daily briefings and the suggestions of our concierge were a big help, as were the daily news sheets. We had such a wonderful time that we've booked the Russian cruise for next year. Read Less

We have been to Europe several times but this cruise took us to places we had not been before. Viking Cruises and this particular cruise had been recommended to us by friends on two separate occasions. The food was excellent and the dining room staff was always very pleasant, friendly, eager to serve and sometimes even entertaining. We couldn't ask for a more pleasurable dining experience! The excursions were well organized & well thought out. The attention paid to detail was appreciated (umbrellas, bottled water). The 'quiet boxes' are a wonderful idea - and they always worked!! The one comment I could make concerning the excursions is the fact that a 'leisure group' was always offered for each excursion. Having this information at the time of booking would have been most helpful as we could have made more informed choices. During the day the lounge and front deck were cool, quiet areas to go with a book or a visit with a friend. The whole cruise was very well organized. There was never any reason on our part to feel confused or uncertain. The transfers to and from the airports (Budapest & Amsterdam) were smooth & efficient. The staff at the front desk dealt with requests & inquiries calmly & efficiently. The pre-dinner updates were very helpful and the evening entertainment was a fun ending to the day. Read Less

He was with us from when we embarked, he was with us on the tours, he briefed us every evening, he entertained us at night and he made what could have been a huge problem seem like a drop in the bucket. The highlight of the cruise was the three hours in the afternoon sailing slowly down the Rhine. With many castles on each side of the river, Gary explained what we were seeing and what was coming next. The included tours were very entertaining and kept us very busy. Suprisingly I met a number of people from my home town in Southern California and a number more who were plesant and good company. Bring a single, it sometimes was awkward which is the only thing that I have that did not go as well as I had hoped. On the other hand, I was not open to meeting any new women, other than as casual dinner companionship dut to recently meeting a woman that I was quite smitten with. We are now an item so you can expect a twosome next time. Is this a useful review? Date of trip is from memory, as I do not have the exact dates with me. Read Less

We did a pre-cruise visit to Prague. The city tour provided by Viking was informational and gave us a nice history of the city. Worth the visit. We boarded the boat at Budapest ( ship name Skadi) and it went smoothly. The cabin suited our needs and the bathroom was a good size. Our room attendant's service was superior and very friendly. The dining experience provided us with a wonderful variety of excellent food and wonderful service. We liked the idea complementary wine or beer with lunch and dinner. Each port and shore excursion gave us a sample of the city's history and famous castles or cathedrals. Viking also offered optional tours, we took advantage of 3 different tours. The tours were very well planned and transportation was on clean, air conditioned buses. Cruising along the rivers was relaxing and the sites on the shore were breathtaking. Vineyards and castles dotted the shoreline. Embarkation and disembarkation went very quickly, with all needed information provided. We also appreciated the provided transfers to and from the airports, this helped to make sure we had a very enjoyable trip. Read Less

This was our first experience as river cruisers and we would rate it 10 out of 10. We travelled with two other couples, all of us of varying ages. The included excursions are suitable for almost all levels of fitness and mobility. We were very impressed with the tour buses and operators, extremely clean and knowledgeable guides. The city guides in all cases were exemplary. We initially thought the cabin was small but it was very nicely appointed. We did find we spent very little time in the cabin as there is so much public space on board with lots of seating for groups large and small (2). The food was beyond excellent with a variety of meals offered in two different venues. The dining room was always our choice for dinner and the staff was top notch. Lunch was at times in the dining room and otherwise in the lounge upstairs, buffet style. We are definitely going on a river cruise with Viking in the future, hoping for China Sept 2017. Our best advice is GO, it is a great way to travel and Viking took care of everything including air transport and pick up and delivery to and from airports. Read Less
