March 31, 2019 on Viking Magni River Cruise Budapest to Passau. First suggestion, do your homework. We booked a French “Balcony” (sliding door) on 3rd Fl. Very small. Just enough room for a double bed. No chairs so reading or TV is lying on bed. Small bathroom. Very efficient but claustrophobic. Room has fridge but only useful for bringing in shore beverages or food. Hint. Don’t upgrade the liquor package. Buy duty free or in town and save $$ as you can bring this on board and no corkage. Fridge is useless otherwise as no room service and cannot bring any bottles from bar into room (even with their best upgraded liquor package!). WiFi is free as it should be because it was terrible. With modern service I’m sure this could be improved if they wanted to but would increase expenses. Service was impeccable from everyone. As were the excursions, even those included. That is the expectation and the standard for this caliber of cruise. The entrees we had were all good but not exceptional. Superb buffet is always in addition to table menu service. Best meal was grilled sea bass served on last day. Meals are mostly served in main dining room with tables of 6-8+. Great opportunity to build friendships and share conversations with fellow travelers. Still good value and a we hope to go again but equipped with new knowledge to fine tune our experience. Read Less

Always wanted to do a river cruise in Europe and this one provided the most highlights and included shore excursions. Going that far, we wanted to spend more time so we chose a 2 week cruise. The reason for the poor review is the way Viking handled the low water situation. We had inquired about this problem before we left for our cruise and was told that there was no issue. They lied! We heard from the crew that the situation had been ongoing for 3 months! The main reason we take cruises is to avoid having to repack as we move from location to location. On this "cruise" we had to pack and unpack 3 times during the cruise and spent 19 hours on busses being shuttled form one ship n to another. We missed one location altogether and stayed on 3 different ships and a hotel! Had we known this, we would have waited to take the cruise at another time! This was an expensive trip and we feel it did not deliver the experience we expected. Most other people on board felt the same way. We all received an email less than a week before the cruise informing us of one possible issue in one section of the river. It turned out to be 4 sections! This was obviously too late to cancel. Viking has offered us 25% of our cruise fare off of another Viking cruise as compensation. I don't feel I can trust Viking to be honest and doubt that I will ever use this cruise line again! Very disappointed. That said, the included shore excursions were wonderful with local guides who spoke English very well as did the crew. Meals on board were fantastic with a good selection. My only complaint about the entertainment and activities on board were that they occurred at 9 pm when I was ready for bed! Embarkation and disembarkation was a delight after the cattle calls of ocean cruises. Read Less

We chose the cruise for the same reasons as Judhess. Because of the low water, our trip was a big disappointment. After the first night spent on the Viking Idun in Budapest, we made our first transition to another Viking Ship (this time the Magni). And, still, after a few days we made a change to another ship and then the last night to a hotel in Amsterdam. We spent many hours being transported by busses to go on excursions we had signed up for and some that the staff selected for us. A big disappointment was arriving in Cologne for a tour of the Cathedral only to find that our arrival was timed during a time when the cathedral was closed to tours. We had a tour that was dismal, ate lunch at a restaurant and then on the 20 minutes after lunch on our way to the bus, we slipped into the Cathedral for about 8 minutes. Terrible planning. We also missed the windmills. Originally we were offered at voucher for our next trip of 25% of what we paid for our GrandEuropean trip. Upon arriving home, that voucher was canceled and we did receive a voucher for our next Viking Cruise with the value of half the expense of our cruise. Likely they read the surveys, which if like ours were quite negative. It is too bad that Viking was not honest up front, had refunded our money and we could have chosen a cruise of our choice with out all of the monkey business. We know of other cruise lines that have done that when they could not provide the services they originally offered. Tour guides for excursions were mostly outstanding except for... Cologne and Nuremberg. Food was marginal to very good. Service was good.Kaitlyn, our activity director was wonderful, but ended up having to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what we were going to do next. Friends of ours took a similar cruise on AMA waterways in June and raved about the food, the service the tours and VIKING, TAKE NOTICE... the outstanding evening entertainment... they had folk lore dancers, music that was not mostly opera. They did not play three nights worth of trivia games. On the night they were in Budapest, the ship even cruised the docking area so they could see the illuminations of lights. The German night was the most fun in the dining room. Of course, we will use our 50% voucher from our past trip, and all I can say is, Viking should have refunded the 50% of our money AND, we only hope, the next trip is as good as we have heard Viking cruises can be! Getting on each ship was handled well, but the first night we learned we were moving to the magni the next day! Read Less

We wanted a long cruise where we could truly relax. The 15 day cruise was really great. We celebrated our 40th anniversary on board. We had beautiful weather and the shore excursions were very enjoyable. Our dining experience was very nice. We were well taken care of. The stop in Nuremberg was very moving. The guides were very knowledgeable and accommodating. Our director Marie was lots of fun. She kept us all entertained. The onboard staff operated like a well tuned clock. They anticipated our every need. The front desk helped us arrange a nice bike ride along the river that was very enjoyable. I would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting a relaxed cruise along 3 different rivers. The only thing I would recommend would be the serving of local wines. While we like Argentine Malbec at home in the USA and while traveling in Argentina, we did expect European wines would be served to us at dinner. Read Less

Beware the excellent marketing pitch given by Viking Cruise line. To see their commercials you imagine days of luxurious vistas and exclusive sightseeing. What we got on our 14-day cruise on the Danube and Rhine were hotels, ship changes and a dozen bus rides. When we were on board, we were often tied to boats three abreast or moored in industrial shipyards. The view from our patio was the patio of the ship tied up to us. Viking spokesmen blamed this on the drought and shallow river beds which they did not disclose to us until five days before our vacation. In reality this had been going on for several months. For our inconvenience, we were offered a 25% credit on a future cruise which will never happen in my lifetime. This is billed as a high-end vacation but was actually shuttling with mobs of people to crowded tourist areas in Hungary, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. Buyer beware! Read Less

Food was ok, not a big selection.Got very tired of busing everywhere, especially last day. Spent 8 hours on a bus. I paid for a river cruise! Saw some beautiful places. No place to workout, half the time, the walking deck was closed. Minimal entertainment. Not much to do on board. Some of the optional excursions were good. Loved the 3 day pre cruise in Prague. Worth the upgrade to be right in town. Gift shop is a joke unless you want to buy overpriced Viking items. While they gave us a 25% credit towards a future cruise, unfortunately that will probably go to waste as to why would I subject myself to that experience again? Read Less

Recommended by travel agent. The ship allowed an obviously sick man to board and infect numerous passengers and the crew. He should because of that person, I was infected with the flu and missed 80% of the cruise and tours, being confined to may stateroom because of illness caused by the sick individual. It was very unfair. One of the tours had to be cancelled because of a river closure. Viking refunded $40 of the $49 and kept $9. The air reservations were made by incompetent people who don't how to allow for time to get off on plane, go through security and customs and make the connecting flight. We missed the connecting flight and had to wait for a much later flight. We arrived in Budapest after midnight. Viking did not meet us at the airport. They said it was too late (their fault) and could not inconvenience an employee. Only passengers should be inconvenienced. That was the attitude throughout the trip. We had to take a taxi from the airport to the ship and Viking refused to refund the tip we had to pay the taxi driver. This was the worst cruise ship experience I have ever had. I will never travel with Viking and again. What was good? The food and consideration of the chef for my inability to eat anything solid for days. The chef made me fresh ginger tea, than broth until I could eat solid food. I have high praise for the chef. Read Less

Vacationing on a river cruise is somewhat like an ocean cruise, but in some ways very different. Viking cruise is top notch. Very refined, luxurious experience. The Danube has so much history and activities to offer! Extra stay in Budapest was amazing - the prettiest city I’ve seen at night (and that includes NYC, LA, DC, Chicago, Seattle, among others)The included excursions were great, and the extra excursions available were very well done also. Our cruise director (Wes) was fantastic and did a great job of advising us on things to do. He wasn’t afraid to tell us the excursions or things to do that he didn’t like as much, and made the entire experience so much fun. Food was incredible, with a wide selection of American and local foods. Staff onboard was exceptional. Awesome people we met on the cruise, and since there were less than 200 passengers, we got to know them better - and still in touch with several of them! It is a bit pricey, but well worth the investment for a vacation. Read Less

The meals were so delicious and I really appreciated the self-serve coffee/tea/water station with snacks. Loved that we could choose between fresh fruit or homemade cookies! I also appreciated that the food changed and offered regional selections as we traveled across countries. Viking thought of everything and I felt so cared for! Before I go any further, you must keep in mind that I am a smalltown senior citizen from New York state in the USA. This old gal had never been on a weeklong trip that required a passport. However, the beauty of my local surroundings and the Fingerlakes region of New York state places the bar pretty high. That being said and all things considered, this boat cruise vacation was a WOW. Embark in Budapest, Hungary; What a way to start my vacation. Immaculate accomodations, cozy cabin, and gracious crew members to make all guests welcome. We started right off with a delicious dinner shared with other vacationers. Everyone was friendly and seemed quite happy. Our first night cruise was spectacular. Everyone went to the upper deck to take photos of the magnificently lit historic buildings, bridges, and statues. The daily (optional) tours kept us as busy as we wanted. We skipped one tour because relaxing on board sounded good. Recharged by afternoon, we decided to tour the locale by bus and on foot. You guessed it, more photos. One of the extra tours we chose was a special Mozart Concert in Vienna. Thank you Viking Cruises for this special event. Another item I must share is regarding the Viking Magni staff. Everyone, and I mean every one of the staff members who we had occasion to meet was kind, good humored, respectful, and helpful in every way. I was delighted with the beautifully appointed restaurant and dining rooms. Nicely set table service, well groomed wait staff wearing perfect uniforms, with personalities and social skills that brought a smile to my face every day. Oh, let us not forget the Chefs. There was a bountiful supply of great food prepared just the way you want it (cooked and served with a smile). We loved the on shore excursions/tours. Words really cannot do them justice. The churches were breathtaking, the shops were quaint and very appealing, the countryside vast and beautiful. All were a must see. I really want to do it again (and again). Read Less

We felt like we got acquainted with most of them. The service was outstanding! Everyone on board was delightful with deal with- any question was answered with a smile. I especially like the excursions. Each day we had an overview of the city and most days had a chance to explore on our own. An added bonus was the excursion to Cresky Krumlov. It was very interesting. My two favorite events were the night cruise in Budapest and the afternoon cruise down the river. The lights on all the buildings and bridges were magical. The afternoon cruise was relaxing and entertaining. For such a small ship, the entertainment was fantastic. Every night there was something fun happening in the main lounge. The last night on board was our 45th wedding anniversary and the staff did not disappoint. We arranged to have dinner at Manfredi's on the Aquavit Terrace and everything was perfect - the setting, the food and the service. It was a wonderful trip. Read Less

This is absolutely the way to go to relax, enjoy new countries, experience new countries and cultures, enjoy excellent food and service while cruising down the historic Danube. Nothing gets better than a Viking River Cruise! If you have never taken a cruise, this is the one you should take. The big ships are really nice, but the service, personal attention, guest relations and overall atmosphere of the River Cruise is terrific. We have already scheduled our next cruise for next year on the Viking Sigrum. The cost of this cruise is very reasonable and the air fare from Texas was ok. Our favorites were the Palace, Castle and Winery tour and the Top of Cologne. We also enjoyed Rothenberg, the Vienna Concert and the trip through Bavaria to Saltzberg. The only one that was disappointing was the Lipizzaner Stallion tour. You walk through the barn and see the horses in their stalls, walk through the gardens and eat Sacartort at a pretty restaurant. Interesting, but would have been better if at least one horse had been shown. We also would not recommend to new wine dinner. The food was ok, but the wine was not good. However, the violin player was excellent! We arrived in Budapest two days early and spent time exploring the city on our own and did a nighttime dinner cruise. Do not miss the Opera House, St. Stephen’s, Castle Hill and a tour of Parliament. We did not extend our trip in Amsterdam as we had visited there on a prior trip. Read Less

We did "The Grand European" tour, 14 days on the ship followed by 2 days in Amsterdam. We actually were on 2 different ships because due to low water level on the Danube, we had to change ships. - We started on Magni and transferred to Baldur. In Passau, Germany, we packed up and got off and took a bus around the low water level while the guests on Baldur did the same and we traded ships. The crew stayed with each ship except for the program director. She came with us. Which was great. We had Tessa and she was fantastic! Viking made this transition as smooth as possible. We signed up for many excursions online beforehand and one thing I would have found helpful would have been for the website to talk about travel time for these excursions. For instance, some of them you are on a bus for an hour or longer to get to the excursion. That said, we still enjoyed them and had a great time. At each excursion you have a different tour guide and I was surprised by the wide variety of experience of these tour guides. Some were very good, others were difficult to understand or had unpleasant attitudes. The food was a challenge for us, but may be not for most people. We prefer to eat light and healthy and found that, that was difficult. The Aquavit Terrace is a very pleasant place to eat and breakfast is great there, lunch was o.k., but dinner only had a few selections. We aren't drinkers and found that there was a lot of focus on wine and drinking. - We expected that, but still didn't like it. The staff on both ships was excellent and attentive. We choose this 14-day cruise because it touched on all the highlights we wanted to see on our first trip through Europe. Additionally, we did a pre and post cruise extended stay. The pre-cruise stay was in Prague. The post-cruise stay was in Amsterdam. Both are beautiful cities and the hotels that Viking put us in were first class. I get seasick on the ocean, but not rivers or lakes. Thus, a river cruise was a great option. We took advantage of most of the optional excursions and can't really choose a favorite. They were all fantastic in their own ways. Food aboard the ship was both excellent and plentiful. We also had a few meals in various cities both as optional excursions and on our own. This gave us the opportunity to taste the local cuisine. Perhaps the most important thing about any hotel stay (make no mistake, a Viking ship is a floating hotel) is the attentiveness of the staff. Viking's staff and crew are par excellence! As an example, we had to change ships because the river was too low at one point making passage under bridges in that area impossible. So, we disembarked our original ship, took a bus ride to another ship, then boarded it all within a couple hours. The passengers of the other ship did the same; in essence, we traded ships. What really stands out is how smoothly this transition went and the warm welcome we received at our new ship by the new crew/staff. For continuity, our Cruise Director, Gary, stayed with us and continued to ensure we all had a top-notch cruise. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we're planning to take a Viking river cruise in China in two years. I highly recommend Viking! Read Less

The start and the end of the vacation is the horror story, the middle of the vacation was very good. I'll start with the bad part. After departing our first airport a little late due to plane issues, we missed our international connecting flight. After multiple rebookings due to weather and spending 2 nights at Atlanta and one night at JFK we finally arrived late in the day on day 3 of our cruise with no luggage. Luggage didn't arrive until day 7 of the cruise. Due to the late arrival we missed all of Budapest and all the activities of Vienna. Now here's where the horror story really got ugly. When we returned Delta apologized for the flight delays and said they would refund our ticket price but since Viking bought the ticket they would get the refund and we should contact the purchasing agent. When Viking was contacted they refused any refund and said that the cruise included free air so we were not entitled to any compensation. Therefore I will not cruise with Viking again ever. Once we were on the cruise, the scenery and stops were beautiful. River cruising is so different from ocean cruising due to the constant scenery while underway. We encountered low water at the continental divide so we were bussed passed the low water area and transferred to another ship that was cruising from Amsterdam. The ships were identical and the transfer was not a big hassle. I did want to see the river around Regensburg and the continental divide but river conditions dictate that decision. Due to the low clearance of the overhead obstructions at the locks, the upper deck was closed for a few days starting around Nuremberg. I believe this would happen even if the river levels had been different. The castles, cathedrals and palaces are all very interesting in their own ways. The cathedrals are amazingly beautiful. The Danube-Main-Rhine rivers are a great venue for a cruise. I just regret the way I was treated after the difficulty of getting to Budapest. One other thought, don't think that because you have trip insurance your losses will be covered. This is where the fine print comes into play and the insurance company is the policy interpreter. The ship was modern. The stateroom while small was well furnished and immaculate. The French Balcony provided excellent views and great fresh air. The element that was totally outstanding was the devotion to customer service. The service was above and beyond our expectations. Our cruise director made sure we were well informed and entertained. The excursions both the included and several optional ones were enjoyable and enlightening. One thing we did not enjoy was the amount of walking required for some of the tours. We avoided the one described as strenuous but many of the others involved a lot of walking which for us was a bit much because we are older. To be fair though, all the guides would inquire about the speed of the walking and did offer to go slow if that is what we wanted/needed. They did their best to accommodate us but we didn't want to be a burden on the rest of the group. I have nothing but praise for their concern for their customers. We look forward to our next cruise on Viking. Read Less

Initially the deal of 2 for was the main reason. Price was good. Itinerary was good. On arrival the reception was faultless and booking in went so well without a hitch, shown to stateroom efficiently. Stateroom was small but it was a river cruise, couldn't be widened. .The staff throughout the whole cruise were magnificent and couldn't have been more helpful.. The meals were tops and if still hungry could have had extra, had wine at meals. All the included tours were topical for the areas we were in. Included was the silver package so better wines and drinks were included and some very nice wines were tasted. More on staff at meals , they got to know your preference and were ready to assist at all times. Loved the whole experience and definitely would travel with Viking again. Unfortunately the weather was overcast most of the time but was not cold and air conditioning in the ship was good so could walk around inside in shirt and go outside for short time with shirt but not a long time. Locks were amazing for the first dozen but after that you ignored them or they were at night and all you saw was a brick wall beside your room. Read Less
