Suggested by my travel agent. I also liked the fact once you paid your final payment that it covered everything! Excursions, alcoholic beverages and gratuities! The staff of the Jewel were absolutely phenomenal. Food was awesome as there were so many choices from fine dining to a la carte to buffet. Ship was nice and clean. Nightly local entertainment in the Lounge was the perfect finale to that particular port and a great way to enjoy a cocktail and wind down. Shore excursions were informative. There were some issues with my tech device to hear the commentary from our guides. Guides were local to the area so they could add a lot more flavour to the commentary and answer questions. You could hear their passion! Prague was a great "tack on" to the cruise. Well worth the little bit extra. Lots of walking. For fit bit enthusiasts, around 15000 to 20000 steps per day in Prague. Wear comfy shoes, cobblestones can be tricky. If I was going across the "pond" again, I would upgrade to first class air. 8 to 9 hours is a long time so you want comfort. Direct flights are undoubtedly your best bet. Read Less

Lovely ship, clean and comfortable. All Staff helpful, attentive, polite. Extremely smart. Butlers charming, could not do enough for us, Their grey suits exceptional. Very comprehensive tours with excellent guides. However one criticism is that their walking pace was a little to fast for me age group they were leading. The app on the smart phone had several technical difficulties. The two external musical events in Budapest and Vienna were superb and very professional. Venues exceptional. The whole experience reflected the culture of the countries. On board entertainment was equally memorable. Food of a very high standard, good choices. journey arrangements good excepting at Budapest some confusion on arrival at Budapest airport as no one there to meet us. I rang the help number given only to receive a recorded message in what I presumed to be Hungarian!! Overall a most enjoyable and memorable holiday. Thank you o very much to everyone involved. Unfortunately we were sailing in an unlucky year as 2018 saw one of the driest condition on the rivers in 100 years. So we weren’t able to sail on our assign ship the Opal. Our embarkation didn’t happen on Oct 24 as scheduled because no ship could reach Budapest. We were able to finally board the Jewel on Oct 28 in Regensburg. The ship was comfortable and it was smooth sailing, we had a good crew. The cabin was small but clean and comfortable, the little balcony was nice when we could open our curtains. Our butler wasn’t the most attentive as we hardly saw him, when we did he was a bit argumentative although reasonably nice. The food and drink selections were great, the service in the dining room/lounge etc was superb. The onboard entertainment was very nice and we enjoyed it. The ports and shore excursions were also very nice. The only thing negative to say about those is related to the drought complications and the fact that to go to Salzburg we had to do another 31/2 hours each way by bus, so way too much time spend in the bus and our visit in Salzburg was very short and felt rushed. We made used of the ebikes once, and it wasn’t a good experience because my husband fell and we were forced to return to the ship. When back there I asked if they had a first aid kit. Unfortunately even though they had one it was quite lacking in supplies such as peroxide to clean wounds and antiseptic cream for example. They could really improve in the stocking of their first aid supplies. We were given assurance that there would be compensation for the days we missed on the boat. We were told that we would get a letter within 7days of our return providing the final amount we are able to claim. We have been back now 9 days and are still waiting for a sign of the letter. Every day since we left, our ship docks next to at least one other. Sometimes there are 3 abreast - this, in the low season. As a result, our view from our balcony (which we paid extra for ~silly us!) is into the window of the cabin of the other ship. So, no view. One night, we were apparently near the exhaust vent of another ship and so for days after, our room and all others on this side smelled of cooking grease. Food is average to poor, you have to eat at 7pm regardless if ypu’d like to eat later, so no opportunity to have a leisurely cocktail hour, most of the towns in between are largely unremarkable, just a means to provide some diversion between the two main cities of interest (in our case, Budapest and Prague). No one on the ship other than the cruise director knows anything about the itinerary, landmarks, upcoming events, so if you can’t find the cruise director, you’re in the dark. There’s about 20 of us in our mid`50s and all have did “never again”. Read Less

We choose Scenic for the all-inclusive option, where tips and alcoholic beverages outside of meals are included in the price. We also chose them because of their 5-star rating, as most in the group were seasoned travellers with discriminating tastes. Scenic met our expectations in all respects, with only a few exceptions. The design of the Jewel (not sure about their other ships) is flawed in the sense that the two most expensive suites, the Royal Panoramic Suites at the stern, are located above the engines. A member of our group staying here. The vibration and noise is quite disturbing for guests sleeping in these quarters when the ship is cruising at night which is fairly frequent. The suites are beautiful, with full length windows on two sides. This turns the suite into a sauna on a sunny day and unfortunately the air-conditioning only functioned in the entry way of the suite, not the whole suite. The windows can be opened but while in port, the suite filled up quickly with flies. Scenic should indicate on their ship maps where the engines are located so guests can be warned in advance of where the noise will most likely occur. Our cabin was midship and so quiet you didn't even know the ship was moving. There is no motion at all on river cruise ships, making it an extremely comfortable cruise. Wait staff and butlers go above and beyond, as do the cleaning staff, kitchen and our cruise director, Tadei. They can't do enough for you. In spite of the design shortcomings in the Royal Panoramic Suite, we still gave it full marks, as it would be impossible to surpass every other aspect of this trip. Read Less

We cruised along the Danube towards the Black Sea having previously sailed in the opposite direction from Vienna to Nuremberg. We were fortunate to encounter wall to wall sunshine in early to mid-October. Scenic Jewel is well up to the job of cruising with visibility from all aspects and dining second to none. The crew were superb and our tour manager, Nikola, was an accomplished host from start to finish. Our cabin was comfortable bearing in mind travelling along the river. And the panoramic views from our balcony were beautiful; we could also lower the window whenever the occasion arose. A butler service was available if you required.. All drinks and excursions were inclusive and this made socialising in the evening after a hard day's sightseeing a great pleasure. A little note about the excursions. These were enjoyable and informative although perhaps a bit of a shock when discovering the Balkan countries. Twice, however, in Serbia and Bulgaria were were served food that was cold. Perhaps I'm being unkind to the east Europeans but we in the west found it a bit disconcerting. However, we received nothing but kindness and consideration from the locals. I can thoroughly recommend this tour.. Read Less

I chose this cruise because the price I paid was all I paid (no staff tipping, alcohol was "free", trips were all included) and because I liked the itinerary. Every single aspect worked perfectly from the pick up from our house to the airport, the flight left on time (RyanAir), the pick up from Budapest to the ship, the welcome, the trips, etc etc. I cannot fault a single aspect of this unbelievable experience. The professional but very friendly staff, the delicious but healthy food, the accommodation on the ship. Nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed the 2 special meals that were included in the price and we made a number of new friends. The weather was delightful for the middle of October. We made use of the walking track daily as we cruised along. The hotel afterwards in Bucharest was probably too posh for us but the room was huge and the staff helpful.x Read Less

The stay in Budapest before we sailed was very good; that Marriott was excellent and very professionally run. Embarkation was smooth. The ship was pretty well all that we expected it to be, except for the so-called library which was a joke. The cabin was all that was required, well designed, fitted and maintained. We do not like buffets for dinner (as distinct from breakfast) but the first night was good for a buffet. All other dinners were good to very good, though the portions were no larger than needed and we thought that the choice of either pudding or cheese rather than pudding and cheese was odd - particularly in Portobello's. The wine was far less good than the food. That on the first night was poor, on other nights it was acceptable - apart from the Friday, when it was undrinkable. Service was generally good - better in the bar than in the restaurant. Of the entertainment, the regional dance troop were very good, the second dance night, which involved audience participation, was off-putting. We declined the other entertainments on offer for classic films that we had somehow never seen. Nicola, the tour manager, was excellent and incredibly helpful; top marks. The following criticism in not of him but of what was not provided. There was no historian/ geographer/ cultural expert to bring the experience of the tour and the relationship between the places that we passed or visited together. This was the significant weakness of the tour. The excursions that we took were of a good standard, and our guide in Belgrade deserves particular mention as outstanding. In our view, the visit to Varna was unbalanced. The Museum is quite simply outstanding and justifies a minimum of an hour for even the most superficial visit. We opted out of the visit to the town centre and spent twice that long in the museum and left much undone. As an aside, the lunch in the fake ship was not that great. The best lunch on a visit was in Bucharest; light, simple and cooked perfectly. The Hilton in Bucharest was not a patch on the Marriott in Budapest. The room was basically very good, but maintenance - especially in the bathroom - was poor. The dinner, an early, very mediocre buffet in a too small, noisy room was a low point. Whoever was responsible had no understanding of the space and layout required for a buffet for the number of people to be fed. The staff were totally untrained and mainly uninterested. Breakfast was OK. We had lunch in the outside restaurant associated with the Hilton and we can report that the serving staff in that restaurant were very professional (we obviously had the C or D team the previous evening), but that the kitchen repeated the mediocre performance of the previous evening. We have organised tours ourselves and know how difficult it is to get good hotels for large parties - so the Hilton may have been the best available - but keep on looking. We are not sure whether we should go again with Scenic. I think that if we took another river cruise we should try another company's offering first. In case you note the apparent inconsistency, our other cruises have been ocean rather than river cruises. Paul and Birte Kelly Read Less

The overall experience was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. The crew were always happy to help with questions etc and were very efficient through out. The whole experience was really help together by the tour director/manager a guy called Nicola. He was superb . The organisation was top drawer, most days three excursions were offered which catered for most tastes the transport arrangements, the food arrangements during the tours, the guides on those tours were all excellent. English was spoken throughout by all crew, guides. The tour was made up of Australians, Canadians, Americans and Brits and all interacted throughout. We never sat at meal times with the same people twice which led to some very interesting and enjoyable conversations. The food throughout could not be faulted and was always well prepared and served by an excellent team of waiters. Liquid refreshments were available 24/7 as were small snacks along with tea and coffee. The mini bars in every cabin were replenished everyday and the piece de resistance was having a butler assigned to you. They made life that much easier and were there to help in any way what so ever. Tea/coffee in bed every morning served by them was a very enjoyable experience. The ship overall was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and we all had plenty of room to do our own thing. Read Less

This was our first River Cruise. We enjoyed the size of the ship and that there were only 168 guests, which made getting to know people very easy. The cruise director, Andreea, was exceptional - she managed all aspects of our itinerary seamlessly. The food was very good, with a varied selection of appetizers, soups, mains, and desserts. The wait staff were friendly and professional. Our cabin was very well designed so we had plenty of space to put everything. Our cabin was also spotless. I would say that I found the itinerary a bit rushed - that being said however, I also chose to not stay on the boat, which I could have. Perhaps the same itinerary could be completed in ten days, allowing a bit more time in some cities. Unfortunately on our second last day we ended being off the ship for almost 11 hours. Our tour of Regensburg was to last 4 hours. There was a problem with water levels being too low and the boat being unable to make it to our next destination. That is understandable - cannot control Mother Nature! I'm not totally convinced that there was not a way to get us on the boat earlier. So, the memory of my last excursion was a long, wet, cold day in a small city with nothing to do. When we boarded the boat everything was rushed. The next morning we had to wake up very early to be bussed to our last port of call. Unfortunately these events coloured my overall experience. Read Less

Chose this trip on the basis of recommendation from a friend and through the travel agent. The company had a good rating and no major complaints from anyone that the travel agent had booked on a cruise with them. Liked the all-inclusive package. And the fact that excursionsfterand no extra charges. Dining seemed to be varied and options to dine without a crowd of 160 around is a benefit. Scenic does a strong marketing job in Canada and there were many Canadians on board--in fact the largest group. The Aussies were the next highest representation so that made for a relaxed and fun atmosphere. The cruise director, Alex, had the organization down pat and a terrific personality to be in this position. Bar staff and room staff were exceptional. Rooms were kept neat and tidy and the rooms are spacious (we had opted for the Junior Balcony Suite which is perfect location on Sapphire deck--right at the end opening up to central foyer so getting to dining, lounge or upstairs sun deck was easy). One man was in a wheelchair and he was accommodated on most tours without any fuss. This was not easy for bus driver or tour guide. All drivers and guides were fantastic and knowledgeable. Great ambassadors for their country! Read Less

We liked that the cruise was all inclusive - no extra charges for excursions, tips, drinks. There was an ample number of choices for the excursions, or you could stay on the ship, or take an e-bike out and tour the town at your leisure. They'd even pack a lunch for you if you were going to be gone through the lunch hour. The service on board was excellent, the staff friendly and well informed about all aspects of the trip. The cabin was very well maintained, exceptionally clean as were all the public areas. The food was out of this world, and the presentation was creative. The portions were appropriate. Scenic had explored various entertainment options, offering us everything from an exquisite concert in a formal atmosphere to an Oktoberfest party, as well as some performers and speakers brought on board to entertain, amuse and educate us. It was all great. At the end of the tour, we had no outstanding expenses with the tour company. Our only out-of -pocket costs were for souvenirs for those we left behind at home. Embarkation and disembarkation went without a hiccup. Their systems have been well tested by time and experience. Things could not have gone more smoothly. Read Less

We chose this cruiseline based on others reviews. It was a great choice. Although the cost was considerably higher this is a once in a lifetime cruise for us so we chose to spend the extra. There were other choices but I still feel we made the right decision. The service was outstanding with a crew that exceeded all expectations. The captain was always at the gangway ready to greet passengers fro the day of embarkation and every day as we returned from excursions. On embarkations every woman was handed a rose and we were greeted by the captain, cool towels for refreshing, and champagne. A butler escorted us to our cabin. The first evening dinner was a buffet but then we set sail on the river for a beautiful evening cruise around Budapest which is a gorgeous evening sight! At the end of the little evening cruise we re-docked across from Parliament which is one of the most beautiful building in Budapest. The next day, after out excursion, we walked into the shopping district of Budapest. It is a lengthy walk from the ship across Budapest's Chain Bridge, but well worth the walk. All breakfast buffets were outstanding! Lunch in the dining room was always an excellent buffet but for lighter choices the lounge and bar area had a wonderful selection of lighter lunches, pizza, soups, salads, burgers, and my favorite which was fish and chips. Dining in the dining room was always wonderful with excellent food choices, outstanding service, and great company. The Budapest excursion we chose was good It seems like every river cruise had the same excursion which created some extremely crowded conditions at some of the sights. It would be nice if the cruise ship companies coordinated their excursions so some were in the morning and some in the afternoon to alleviate some of the crowds. Every ship seemed to have groups at the same sights at the same time. The Viking River cruise ships had a much better docking area nearer to the sops and activities in Budapest - but Scenic had a nice quiet, very scenic docking area. The evening cruises through the locks would sometimes create much bumping and noises in the lower deck but that was expected. Sometimes it woke me but I never seemed to have a problem if we were just cruising. After having experienced many ocean cruises where the cruise director was always outgoing and energetic I was a little surprised by the dry, humorless cruise director onboard. He often sat by himself. He always seemed to be available for questions but did not have a very outgoing personality. He got a little better at the end of the second week. Don't get me wrong, he was very accommodating but you had to seek him out and expect to only get a minimal answer to your question. The bartender, waiters, bar staff, service staff, room attendants, butlers , everyone was just outstanding! They worked tirelessly to make sure every need was met. There is not a huge staff and they worked for hours to attend to your needs. One of the things I did not like was that with so few staff, there was very limited service if you were on the sundeck. It seemed like they would come around once in a while but if you decide to stay on the sundeck you should expect to go get your own refreshments I cannot blame the staff. When you are cruising there are many passengers, 1 or sometimes two bartenders, and most often 2 bar service staff. In Vienna the Schonburg Palace - the early excursion was good since it seemed to get more crowded as the day wore on. My suggestion ... the tour was approximately 1 hour but then you had 2 hours of free time which was way too much a=for just at the Palace. If the excursion included more passes to more of the museums then 2 hours would be good but this tour only included a tour in the main Palace and then you were on your own. The bus took you back to the ship or dropped off in town. Unfortunately the ship docks fairly far from the town and the drop off in town was too far from the place I wanted to go. My suggestion is that if you would like to see the Market then do the tour "Shop with the Chef" for that shopping opportunity. Much of the evening entertainment was too short. There were many good, interesting evening entertainment opportunities but there were all fairly short. There was not a lot to do onboard I the evening once the entertainment ended. Almost every tour (other than Schonburg Palace) did not have enough free time. I always felt very rushed and wanted a bit more time. The excursions were good but then there was never enough time to do that bit of shopping or to go back and see something that really interested you. The Best of the Sound of Music excursion was just "OK". It could have been that we had the one rainy day of out 15 day cruise that day so the show was inside a restaurant that was just "ok". The food was mediocre, the room was overly crowded. The show was ok but since it was highly rated I was disappointed. If the sun had been shining the scenery may have made up for the lackluster show and lunch - but it poured. Here we were in the mountains and hills of Austria and the fog and rain was so thick you could not see! Just the luck of the day - not any fault of the cruise line. For shopping - save it until the final days. The best shopping port was Cologne. There was plenty of time for shopping any many shops. I have to state that every excursion was very good. I always wanted more time but the content, organization, and areas were well chosen and excellently planned. Would I go again? YES!!!!! Read Less

On the negative side, not enough staff to offer a 5 star cruise, food tried to present as ostentatious but failed, wines local and uninspiring. Enhanced experiences very nice, but other trips disappointing. Onboard entertainment less than one would expect for the price and claimed luxury standards. Cruise Director comes in for critism as a poor communicator, inefficient and with a sense of humour that could be interpreted as irritating by many. Enticed by the images of castles, green pastures, churches and villages of Europe, it was time to book a comfortable more leisurely exploration of this part of the world. Scenic's blitz of advertising in print and TV was timely, the information day at Sofitel, Melbourne helped consolidate my decision being an Australian organisation. Budapest to Amsterdam - Jewels of Europe River Cruise Not having to embark till mid afternoon meant there was enough time to explore Budapest for a few hours. We were offered afternoon tea and cakes at Budapest Marriott with the opportunity to meet fellow travellers. On boarding Scenic Jewel we were greeted by crew and Captain with flowers, drinks and a refreshing face towel, much appreciated as it's summer. By the time we found our 'home' for the next fortnight, our luggage was awaiting to be unpacked!! Not being an ocean liner I prefer the cosier feel of a smaller vessel, yet large enough for smooth and stable travel. Our cabin was compact, with more than adequate storage, mini bar (fully stocked) and security safe. Ensuite was well stocked with French toiletries and diligently restocked daily and cleaned/tidied twice/day. Buffet breakfast (with option for continental breakfast for early risers) and lunch with dinner being a la carte there's an Italian Dining Option as well in the Reserved Restaurant area. It was near impossible to not overeat and portioned sized evening meals was most welcomed. Given the vessel has a small kitchen it was amazing the range and variation of mainly European delectables that were consistently created, the meals would arrive hot and freshly cooked. The fresh fruit sorbets were out of this world!! Difficult diners (with multiple allergies) were not a problem and nothing was an issue. As it was an open bar offering; including cocktails and wines from local regions were the norm. Being an almost non drinker - an odd sip is all I can tolerate - I enjoyed the occasional mocktail. It is my understanding many other shipping companies offer only beers and wines!! (shared by fellow travellers). Entertainment at the end of each evening was well sourced, varied and interesting - allowed us a further appreciation of the region's culture. Because we had to traverse through 69 locks with each one taking on average 30 mins the sundeck was invariable quarantined from being used as deck equipment and canopies had to be constantly flattened then re-erected - this meant less space for those of us trying to burn off the calories - thank goodness for the small gym, but there's nothing like fresh air, majestic views and vit D. Take drip dry clothing - a complimentary 1kg laundry/cabin was most appreciated otherwise laundry service can add up. It is obvious the crew enjoy working on smaller vessels and with Scenic, as many have worked on ocean liners (small cities) previously. As each day passed we were like one big extended family of 140+ plus crew. Small surprises like venturing back to our cabins to find a different towel sculpture awaiting our return........this is not a dream!! Service overall was consistent, professional, obliging and "can do attitude" is commendable. Understandably some ports were not worth viewing as nothing was opened (on weekends), whereas other ports needed further exploration but there was not enough time although too small to make another trip to see these little gems. Not sure what's the best solution as I understand we have a schedule to keep to arrive at our final destination. Some places warranted at least 1 - 2 nights like Vienna, that is why these cruises are viewed as teasers or samplers of a region for further exploration without constant packing and unpacking one's luggage. The Shore excursions were well planned with supporting transport for those unable to walk steep inclines, though would have appreciated viewing some artisans, craftworks (like in Amsterdam), cottage industry rather than just more eating and drinking (a thought), although half a day excursions restricts how much one can achieve. Very impressed with Scenic buses along the way. Overall, really had a memorable magical 15 days with Scenic, enjoyed travelling with largely Australian travellers, felt very at home, so glad gratuities were included and it was up to us if we wanted to reward individually. Will share this experience with my travel agent, will continue to explore future regions with Scenic, although unsure how to balance travelling and spending say 1 - 2 days in some larger city locations without having to come back to that region with another travel organisational group. Thank you Scenic for some lovely memories. Read Less

An amazing 2 weeks. We did a 3 day 'add on' to our cruise and travelled from Prague to Budapest - a great way to meet a group of fellow travellers prior to the cruise starting. Loved our balcony cabin on Scenic Jewel. It was great to be able to be open the window and actually sit out on a balcony - not just open a window and sit looking out as seemed to be the case on many ships we saw on the river. Staff were amazing - so friendly and obliging, nothing was any trouble. Shore excursions from the ship were all excellent - information provided beforehand was very informative. Afternoon/nightly entertainment was varied and excellent quality. Food in the main dining room was first class - great variety. We also enjoyed a visit to two other dining areas on the ship (open to all passengers) and the food in those was very impressive. Loved the 'cocktail of the day' in the dining room, the early morning cup of tea, the daily crosswords and suduko, newspapers, the 'raffles' and competitions and so on. This was our first cruise with Scenic - it will not be our last. Read Less

We were so impressed with the bike ride when there was many more people opting for this than usual instead of disappointing anyone the team organised to hire more bicycles so ensure everyone could go. Hunor our cruise director was fabulous and always made the port talk interesting and amusing and nothing was too much effort. Thanks to everyone on board the Scenic Jewel for a memorable holiday!! My husband and I did the 24 Day Eastern Europe Explorer & Jewels of Europe River Cruise and it was one of the best trips we have ever done. We couldn't speak too highly of Scenic .... the Company was just fantastic. The first part of our trip covered Eastern Europe by land and the tour content, hotels, tour guide etc. were excellent. Upon reaching Budapest, we emarked on the Scenic Jewel late afternoon where we were greeted with champagne by the crew before going to our cabin. The cabin was reasonably spacious considering it is just that "a cabin", with plenty of storage, comfortable bed, excellent aircon and bathroom facilities, complete with make up mirror (a must for us ladies)! The balcony was small but adequate. Our butler was very professional and nothing was too much trouble. Food on the ship was excellent and varied. Every drink imaginable (wine, beer, cocktails of all descriptions) were available 24 hours per day and all inclusive. The little "cultural extras" Scenic does for its guests, goes above and beyond what anyone would expect. Tours were well managed and all the ports we visited were fantastic (with the exception of Nuremberg) which was a little disappointing. We had a situation on our trip where there was flooding in Europe and at one stage our ship was unable to sail under the bridge and so we were bussed to the next port, had our tour and were to board the ship again once the water level had dropped (as was expected that particular day). When we arrived to board the ship it still had not arrived. So, instead of letting us sit on the bus, our Tour Director (Kurt) organised to take us all to a restaurant where he ordered food and drinks for all of us until we were able to board the ship about an hour later. Fantastic service! I could go on and on but to sum it all up ..... Scenic are very professional, genuinely care for the guests and have fabulous itineraries. Book with Scenic and you won't regret it. Traveling with Australians is a whole lot more fun than 140 other Americans. The Aussies's attitudes toward life in general is refreshing - they know how to have fun. The Jewel was in excellent shape, the crew very attentive, and the shore excursions well chosen. Scenic is "all inclusive" never need to reach for a wallet or credit card. Scenic even provided us with a private limo for our transfer to our Amsterdam hotel at journey's end. Read Less

The make up of the passengers on Scenic Jewel for our cruise was 2 English (we are not Brits), 16 Canadians, 140 Aussies and only 6 of us from the US. Great fun, the Aussie take on life and humor was the icing on the cake of a wonderful cruise experience. After reading other reviews and the professional review, I can assure folks that the Jewel had cured any staff training problems. They multitasked and worked hard and long hour very cheerfully. The ship's captain not only greeted us almost every time we returned from a shore excursion, but was seen helping the deck hands in setting the bicycles on shore before the ride. Patrick, the tour director was excellent, the best we have seen in over 30 cruises. The ship itself was clean and well maintained. The balcony with the roll up windows is an excellent feature, Scenic cruises should be proud of the amenity. The breakfast buffet was excellent, including all the fixings for lox, bagels and cream cheese, except no bagels. The omelet cook was great made up for the lack of bagels. The soups were exquisite. The only real failure was the kitchen's attempt at weiner schnitzel, based on my 4 1/2 years of living in Germany, this wasn't close. Everything else was very good to excellent. The speciality restaurant Porto Bello was a real treat. The cruise was truly all inclusive, no charge for tours, drinks or tips. Nothing was added to what we had paid in advance. If you are American or Canadian and enjoy irreverent sense of Aussie humor Scenic is for you.   Read Less

15 days of being looked after 24 hours a day. A1 cabins - there was nothing that Scenic hadn't thought of for our comfort. Brilliant crew; tasty food; enjoyable entertainment; interesting day trips; friendly passengers. Plenty of activities but also plenty of relaxation. It was our first Scenic holiday but definitely won't be our last. Can thoroughly recommend a Scenic river cruise. Read Less

My wife and I recently took a European River Cruise on the Scenic Jewel from September 15 through 29, 2014. This cruise started in Budapest, Hungary, followed the Danube through Austria and southern Germany, then took the Danube-Main Canal to the Main River, and finally ended up on the Rhine, with the cruise ending in Amsterdam, a total distance of about 1800 km. Through good fortune, there was hardly any rain for the duration of our trip, with temperatures above 20 Celsius nearly every day. We are experienced ocean cruisers, but this is the first time we have taken a river cruise. We also arranged air transportation through Scenic, and the transfers between the airport and the ship were quick and flawless. The Jewel is a new ship, completed last year expressly for these waterways. It holds about 160 passengers on three decks, the top two having balconies with sliding windows that can be opened or closed depending on the weather. The cabins are spacious with every amenity and we found the beds very comfortable. All rooms featured an entertainment system with which you could access television, music, shipboard information and the Internet though we found with all the activities we hardly used that. The ship features the ‘Crystal’ dining room which featured buffets at lunch and usually sitdown dinners. The food was uniformly good and they were very careful to point out dishes that might trigger my nut allergy. There is also an Italian restaurant called the Portobello that all passengers can try. The ship has a lounge which also functions as an entertainment venue and bar/café. The entertainment was low key, consisting of folk artists, lectures and demonstrations. For those used to the splashy shows on ocean cruises, it will seem pretty small scale. Finally there is a sun deck where you can watch the world go by, for every day on a river cruise there is something to see. On the Danube Main canal, access to the sundeck was restricted because of low bridges. All excursions were included in the price we paid. The biggest problem we had was trying to choose one of the two or three options sometimes on offer. Scenic attempts to create experiences for their passengers so that in addition to the usual city tours, you can also do things like attend musical performances, wine tastings, “medieval feasts” and so on. There are power assisted bikes for those that like to explore on their own, and audio players that may be used for self tours. We were kept very busy with all the activities. The local guides were uniformly superior and in keeping with the all inclusive nature of the trip would not accept tips. In every respect, this cruise exceeded our expectations. The service from the 50 staff members was uniformly friendly and attentive, and when this cruise company says that their cruise was “all inclusive” they really meant it, right down to the mini bar in the room and the free Wi-Fi. The only extra cost we incurred was laundry. There’s no doubt that all inclusive river cruising in Europe is expensive, but in this case you get what you pay for. Another good thing about river cruising is that with only 160 passengers you soon get to know your fellow travellers, unlike a large cruise ship where you hardly ever see the same person twice. We would unreservedly recommend Scenic to anyone considering a European river cruise and will use them again ourselves.   Read Less

From the time we arrived at Budapest Airport to the time we left Amsterdam Airport our river cruise on the Scenic Jewel can only be described as First Class. We were welcomed by our butler and the Captain with a glass of champagne, which set the tone for the whole trip. The Scenic Jewel was impeccable, sparkling throughout, as was the crew and service. This was due to the Captain and Cruise Director running a happy ship. The cuisine was wonderful and when Scenic say "all inclusive" it certainly was. Nothing was too much trouble. The tours were first class and enhanced by the provision of personal GPS units which had details of all points of interest programmed in. There were also Scenic Enrichment concerts, a banquet at Marksburg Castle, what a fun night, and not forgetting the Schnapps tasting!! The passengers were mainly Australian with a sprinkling of British, Canadian and New Zealanders, a great mixture, the whole ship gelled really well and we now have new friends in Australia and Canada. In all it was the best cruise we have been on, have not stopped talking about it since our return. We have now booked a Canadian Tour with Scenic for July 2015. Read Less
