We just returned from our first European river cruise. Having only been on ocean cruises in the past, we weren’t sure how this vacation would compare. We absolutely loved it! Our cabin was small, but extremely efficient and clean! Our housekeeper, Gigel (George) was amazing and did an awesome job of keeping our cabin spotless every day. Martina, the cruise manager, was exceptional-bright, witty, entertaining, kind, compassionate, and full of boundless energy! She greeted us with enthusiasm on our first day of our pre-cruise land package in Switzerland and seemed to effortlessly take care of us from that point on. Honestly, the trip wouldn’t have been near as fun without her-she is absolutely amazing-so personable and what a gift she has for history! Our group all agreed that she made the trip so wonderful for all the passengers. Martina was so good with those that needed extra assistance and related to the thirty somethings and everyone in between just as easily. She was always available and we started to wonder, when does this girl sleep?! Overall the ship was in great shape. I think it is one of AMA’s older vessels, but it didn’t show it. Our cabin’s bathroom was small, but pristine and very up to date. The water pressure was amazing and the shower had nice fixtures. Our cruise was a wine cruise so we had additional wine tastings on and off the ship which were fun, interesting, entertaining, and very enjoyable. We also had an amazing beer tasting in Cologne. We enjoyed all the ports and shore excursions. We were wishing we could have spent more time in Strasbourg along with most of the ports because the villages and cities were lovely. We were very satisfied with the onboard entertainment. A couple of nights they brought in local entertainment. (Musicians) Everyone always seemed to be enjoying themselves in the evening whether just listening to the music, dancing, visiting with newly made friends, or playing cards. There was music and dancing every night in the lounge. But, if you are looking for ocean cruise type entertainment, you will probably be disappointed. We were pleased with the food. A couple of nights we chose the fish entree and compared to the meat entree, the portion size seemed rather small. That was our only complaint about the food. Breakfast is a huge buffet with a made to order omelette station OR you can order off a menu. I had the eggs Benedict for breakfast from the menu one day. Lunch is also buffet, but you can order pizza or a burger from the menu. I had a burger and fries several times and it was very good. Dinner was delightful as well aside from the fish portions I alluded to earlier. And you can always order a steak or salmon if you don’t like the main offerings. I had the salmon one night and it was wonderful. One evening the appetizer was duck and it was amazing. Another night the entree was veal cheeks and they were so tender and delicious. Our group also dined at the Chef’s Table on the last night and it was such a fun and satisfying experience!l For those passengers who want to workout while on the cruise, the ship has its own personal trainer who was great, but not pushy! I would definitely recommend this cruise. We boarded the ship in Basel and went north on the Rhine to Amsterdam. The day we went through the Rhine River gorge, where many castles are located near the banks, Martina provided amazing historical commentary over the ship’s speaker system. We learned so much from Martina and our expert guides on the shore excursions! Overall, the entire staff on the AmaDante is amazing. They work tirelessly and long hours to ensure that everyone has an awesome cruise! Read Less

I was looking for a really special cruise for my husband's 60th birthday and Ama Waterways was recommended to me by a small ship specialist. My travel agent understood that my husband and I are not "get on the bus and tour" type of people (even though Ama does provide riding tours). We wanted walking, hiking, and biking opportunities and Ama provided that. We also wanted to be in ports in the evening to explore the towns after hours. Ama's ship, staff, food, itineraries, service, was excellent. The ports were amazing. We walked over 25,000 steps each day and loved every step. The food was delicious and local and we never found a need to eat off of the ship. The wines at dinner were outstanding and the wine stewards kept our glasses filled. The Bitburger beer was great and a must with lunch once I discovered it! The room was extremely comfortable - we slept like babies. The water pressure in the shower was great (one minor complaint - the water pooled on the bathroom floor after taking a shower so the bath mat had to be replaced daily). We had a TV that was also a computer in our room but we never used it. Did I mention the refreshing cool washcloths and flavoured tea when we returned from excursions? I could go on and on and on about this fabulous cruise. If we had to find a "negative" the only thing I can say is that it was disappointing that the upper deck of the ship was closed for part of the cruise but that is not Ama's fault and could not be helped. The bridges are low in certain areas and the railings have to be taken down to allow clearance under the bridges. We also weren't expecting to sometimes have our cabin windows blocked by another ship when in port (they dock next to each other). But, seriously, those were the only negatives. My husband would add that he would like more educational lectures. I also have to mention the staff. The purser was always ready to solve any problem and answer any question. The cruise manager organized the itineraries and excursions, and even debarkation in the most professional manner. On debarkation day, she arranged for transportation for every guest to wherever we were heading (airport, train station, bus station, local hotel, etc.) and it all happened timely and seemingly with ease. It was amazing! We will definitely sail with Ama again. AMA-ZING! Read Less

Started cruise in Basel, Switzerland. Side trip to Lucerne Switzerland the day before by taking a one hour train ride from city center, easy and further the time. Took a cruise across the lake and then a tram to top of Mt Pilatus, great experience. Both citiies fun to explore. The market areas in Basel are very nice. The staff of the Amadante very welcoming and always smiling. They all appear to enjoy people and their jobs. The crew manager Edward fantastic. He planned so much and took care of everyone’s questions or needs. The chef and dining room staff was amazing. Great history lessons about the towns and Germany from friendly tour guides on every excursion. Visited beautiful towns and tasted delicious things on culinary excursions and on our own. Met great people from around the world. We appreciated the smaller intimate number of cruisers on this size ship. It makes it inviting to create friendships. This was our first river cruise and it exceeded expectations. Interested in doing another river cruise on a future vacation. Ken and Cathy Read Less

Amawaterways was recommended by a travel agent friend and I am so thankful to her. While I've traveled on ocean cruises and several land trips, this was my first river cruise and I wasn't sure what to expect. A friend had heard me talking about this trip and joined me in the adventure - two 70 yr. old women off on an adventure! We planned to arrive in Basel the morning prior to our sailing date but due to flight problems didn't arrive until late the night before sailing so weren't able to explore Basel as much as we'd hoped. We did make it to the Dreiländereck - the point where Switzerland, France, and Germany meet. It's in a working dock area- certainly not lovely but it is a cool photo op spot. We boarded and boy, lots easier than the ocean cruise ships. We were personally escorted to our room (room 311) which was properly set up with twin beds. The room was spacious enough to allow 2 women to get themselves ready for the day without too much bumping into each other. The was ample storage and the sliding glass doors opened to the french balcony. The food far exceeded any expectations. Keep in mind, beverages at meals - both alcoholic and non - are included in the cruise price. That means mimosas for breakfast, wine and/or beer for lunch & dinner. Every night you receive the ship's scheduled events for the following day and that includes the cocktail of the day - there's also a daily cocktail hour. There is also the Chef's Table that you can sign up for once a cruise(also included). We went the first night & it was truly a special evening. The dining area is in the rear of the ship so the view is lovely. And this brings me to one of my favorite aspects of the cruise - the people. Both guests and crew became so familiar to us. With less than 200 people including guests and crew you quickly make acquaintances and even friends. While there is a set time for meals in the dining area, you are free to come and go, sit where you want, when you want, and with whom you wish. Delightful! Breakfast and lunch offer both menu and buffet items while dinner has a menu with Chef's Recommendations and a la carte. There was always enough variety that vegetarians, meat lovers, seafood lovers - we all found ample choices. My friend missed the big entertainment venues provided on the ocean cruises but since that was never my thing, I didn't miss it. She would have liked more & varied entertainment. Bristra entertained us each night on the piano and there was a delightful entertainer, Lindsay Hamilton, one night. Spectacular! A glass blower came on for a demonstration, a speaker, and, of course, the constantly changing scenery and going thru the locks was fun. The excursions (most included in the cruise price) were geared to all abilities. There were walking tours for the "gentle walkers", active, hiking, and biking. I took several of the active walking tours and 2 of the bike tours. My travel buddy did walking tours and also some of the culinary/tasting tours. There were also wine tasting tours that I really enjoyed as well. There are a couple of optional tours available at additional cost. And remember, staying on the ship is totally OK! And the crew? So interactive and helpful. On the ocean cruises we never saw the captain, much less interacted with him. Not the case here! The crew all spoke English and were all a joy to be around. It's not hard to know when you're around people who enjoy what they do and these people are fun. This ship also offered a Wellness Program. Viktor, the Wellness Director, led classes daily and also accompanied the bike tours. Great chance to keep up with my workouts and get to know even more people. Plus Viktor was nice to look at! Because the ship is smaller and there are fewer people, the opportunities to mingle, converse, and get to know each other is wonderful. After the water portion of the cruise, we continued on the land portion for 3 days in Prague. Again, choice of excursions and a super hotel. Wish there was more time - but isn't that always the case? Would I go with Amawaterways again? In a heartbeat. I'm already looking for my next cruise with them. Sorry to be so wordy, but I really found this cruise to be a delight & want to share. Read Less

We sailed on the AMADante from May 17th to May 24th, 2018 on the new Medieval Treasures cruise. This sailing was the inaugural voyage for this particular itinerary. We started in Basel and ended up in Nuremburg. We sailed the Rhine and Main Rivers. Our second cruise with AMAWaterways. I cannot say enough good things about AMA. From the moment you sign into their website after booking, every part of the experience is professional and so well done. Their website is easy to use and you can get some great information and videos on it. The paper documents you receive along with your lovely luggage tags are such high quality. You do not get booklets of information like this anymore from ocean cruise lines. When you board the ship, the staff is waiting for you and if you are early it doesn’t matter. You are welcomed into the lounge to wait until your rooms are ready. You are given a nice lunch while you are waiting. Our stay prior to our cruise was in Lucerne and then Basel, so we took a taxi to the ship and arrived shortly before 11 AM. It wasn’t long before AMA had the canopy out and welcomed us to board and took our luggage from us. We had a nice lunch and then our rooms were ready and we were escorted to them. Our luggage was already there for us ready to unpack. Our housekeeper, Vladimar showed us the features of the room. The staff cannot do enough for you to make your stay as welcoming as possible. The entertainment on board was top notch. We especially enjoyed Enrico Novi, a solo artist with the sound of a band. As soon as Enrico started playing his music which everyone was familiar with, the dancing didn’t stop until he did. Enrico was so personable and friendly and such a great singer. The other entertainers were excellent as well and we enjoyed all the shows put on nightly. We enjoyed the new Sip and Sail program and not only did it include the cocktail of the day but there was a drink menu that you could order from. Very well done, AMA. Wine and beers were included with your meals. There was always a great selection of food items daily either from the buffet or menu. The Chef’s recommendation was very popular each night. No one was in a hurry to get you to finish up a meal, but waited on you with professionalism and charm. The waiter that made the omlettes, David, did a fantastic job each morning. Once he knew your preferences you could almost guarantee he would have your selection ready and waiting for you with a big smile. The ports of call were amazing on this particular cruise. We left Basel and our first stop was Strasbourg, France, a beautiful city. We did the walking tour and our guide was excellent. Juliette Bossert was our guide and she was very informative and kept our group moving along at a perfect pace for this type of tour. We stopped at Ludwigshafen and Redesheim, Speyer, Frankfurt and if you wanted, you could do a full day excursion to Heidelberg. Miltenberg, Wurzburg, Rothenburg and Bamberg were the last ports of call. All beautiful. My husband, friend and I decided to stay on the ship between Miltenberg and Wurzburg and it was an amazing sail. Our ship had 124 guests and 20 of us stayed onboard for this sail. What a lovely afternoon of relaxing in the sun and seeing so many great views along the way. So many extras included with your trip. From the ice cream social to the lovely beer, pretzel and sausage snack in the lounge. A fresh rose from the Captain, champagne, and the lovely Captain’s Farewell dinner. A lovely afternoon tea was set up each day between 4 and 5 pm. Included sandwiches, sweets, cakes, etc. It was all special. One thing to note for people that have gone on ocean cruises and not on a river cruise, there are no long lineups for anything. You do not go through security to get on and off the ship. You are treated like an adult. You just swipe your card to leave and enter the ship. For tours, you use your Quiet Vox machine and your complimentary headsets. You take your little Quiet Vox transponder and match it up to your tour guide’s colour lollypop and you only hear the narrative from your tour guide. Busses are lovely and new, and there was never a long wait to start your excursion. If you signed up for an excursion and you didn’t attend it wasn’t any problem. You didn’t have to notify anyone in advance and you could leave the excursion if you wanted to and go out on your own, as long as you notified the tour guide that you would make your own way back to the ship. Our cruise director had a great sense of humour and was always available for any questions you may have. Edward Sengel knew how to keep the groups interested in his lectures and also, if he had to make any quick changes, he was right there to fix any issues that may have popped up such as the ship was a little longer getting through the locks one day so the bus took a little longer tour than usual to wait until the ship caught up. This particular cruise went through 54 locks, which is a lot of locks but it went amazingly smooth. We were in room 332 which is at the back of the ship near the Chef’s table. My only complaint about that room is that we did get some engine noise from the bow thrusters. We were very pleased to see Aurora Teodorescu, the purser, and Alex the Maitre’ d on the AMADante. They were both on the AMASerena last year so it was nice to see familiar faces when we boarded this year. Always so professional with a great smile and sense of humour. Mitko Georgiev was a great waiter and so pleasant. Always a smile and a laugh. Our pianist/singer was excellent and very professional. She played each afternoon and evening and did a fantastic job of entertaining everyone. Our two bartenders, Johnny (Stamin Ionut) and his partner, who went by the name of “I love you” as his name was hard to pronounce, did a fantastic job of keeping everyone’s glasses filled as required. Anna Maria was an excellent bartender as well. Another waitress in the diningroom that made our experience special was Gabriella Ciorioana. Always working with a big smile and making sure you were well looked after. Other staff on this ship included Sonia Ferrera, the hotel manager, a very professional lady with a great smile. Always helping out on the ship from scooping ice cream, to helping the bar staff and the front desk staff, a true professional. Captain Klaussmann did a great job along with his co-captain. We will be sailing with AMAWaterways as soon as we can. We always recommend this River Cruise Company to any of our friends when they ask us which ships we have sailed on. People ask us what we liked best about the trip and as you can see from our review, we loved it all. The new AMA Cruise App is a great tour to share photos, read your dailies and send postcards to friends or allow friends/family to follow your trip online while you are onboard. Although the App wasn’t available for our cruise, I see it now holds twelve of the ships with upcoming cruises. I have test driven this app and it seems to work very well. I will use it in the future for any upcoming river cruise. There were no children on this particular cruise. Our age group of people would be from early 50's and up. Approximately 60 Canadians out of 124 guests. Many from Nova Scotia, Canada. A great cruise. Read Less
