This was our first Viking cruise. The experience was as wonderful as our river cruise. Service, food and itinerary outstanding. Guides were exceptional and we felt like we had real insider views from the locals of each country. The cruise offered a wide range of excursions and we enjoyed traveling by foot, bus, boats and cable cars. The food was the best we ever had on a cruise. Dining was open and it was easy to get a table whatever time we choose to dine. No long lines or hassle with reservations. The service and staff was outstanding. Rooms always clean, room service 24x7 in addition to all the diverse places to eat. Seafood buffet nightly was amazing and food in the dining room diverse and tasty. We were wowed by the entertainment, the house band and singing crew were wonderful. Everyone was up close and personal, it was a wonderful experience. Read Less

The itinerary appealed and I wanted to see what others found special about Viking. It was nice but no better than others that are far less expensive. The ship was pleasant, and the food was good. There was not enough space for clothing in our deluxe veranda cabin. The entertainment was lacking and mostly consisted of the same group of vocalists every night. Daytime programming was practically nonexistent. The included shore excursions were limited in scope and variety, and were scheduled to preclude participation at all if more interesting excursions were purchased. There was far too much “free time” on excursions, which translates to being unexpectedly abandoned in a foreign city without even a map. There was such poor advance communication on what to expect that it was impossible to know how to prepare. Example: the full day excursion to Rome was described as a motor coach tour but we were taken to St. Peter’s square and left for five hours. We were not even informed of the existence of hop on-hop off buses but were simply pointed in the general direction of taxi stands some blocks away. I might try a river cruise with Viking but will probably use a different line for our next ocean cruise. Read Less

We had done a River Cruise with Viking on the Rhine River Basel to Amsterdam. Vikings level of service was outstanding. Last Year we did our first Ocean with Viking on the Sun British Isles Explorer London to Norway 16 Days. It again was outstanding! Fantastic Itinerary. For this Summer we chose Viking Star on the 12 Night Mediterranean Odyssey. I can't say enough great things about the ship and crew as a whole. Everyone works extremely hard and pleases each and every guest. From our cabin (Deluxe Veranda) 3066, was always immaculately kept, House Keeping, Room Service, Maintenance when I locked our safe incorrectly. Wine Service all top Notch! The shore excursions were fantastic, especially the ones we chose. Unfortunately when we signed up for excursions, 2 were Sold Out, The Helicopter tour over Monaco and the French Riviera and the Gondola tour in Venice. However when we were on board Alonya working at the front desk who had sailed with us on Sun British Isles Trip was unbelievably helpful and got us waitlisted and cleared for both. Amazing Service and Amazing tours. Another familiar face was Hector the Wine Sommelier! He is fabulous and was so accommodating with our wine selections along with Ramon the wine steward. They both made a point to come to our table at dinner every night with recommendations. The Dining options are wonderful, the food amazing and the service again Top Notch, We never waited for anything whether a cocktail poolside, water service on the Aquavit Terrace or in any restaurant. Embarkation and Disembarkation super smooth. Our luggage did not make our connection as we were delayed out of Boston but the crew got it to our cabin before we even arrived. The only slight thing I would mention is that a few of our Ports of Call were not that pretty for the cruise Terminal. Would prefer to Moore off the coast and tender in but I understand all of the logistics in moving all the guests, buses etc. Monaco was Amazing. We just booked New Zealand, Australia and the Great Barrier Reef with Viking for 2020! :) Will never choose any other company than Viking. They do everything extremely Right :) Read Less

First time cruising with Viking. Won’t be the last. Really enjoyed shore excursions and cruise ship experiences (Spa, Snow grotto, pools and entertainment)! Food was delicious; Manfredi’s was favorite because of its popularity, reservations are required and availability is limited. We visited four countries in seven days. By far, Italy and France were our favorite countries and shore excursions. We enjoyed a Day in Tuscany and Pisa. We enjoyed a wine-lunch with friends on the Canal du Midi and where we had the most free-time, Avignon. We had visited Barcelona earlier this year and enjoyed revisiting our favorite spots in the city for example, the Gothic District, Las Rambla, La Boqueria and something new — Flamenco dance and dinner show. Embarkation and disembark processes were organized, safe, secure and seamless. Every crew member with whom we interfaced was knowledgable, helpful and professional. Many were multi-lingual. Overall, we had a wonderful first taste of Europe and will definitely cruise with Viking again. Read Less

Always wanted to do a Med cruise and when we saw the itinerary it hit all the spots on our bucket list. What was even better our Nephew and his wife live in Barcelona so we added a couple of nights on the front end to visit and explore the city. We also added nights on the end in Venice. Our cabin (PV1-PENTHOUSE VERANDA) was great and had some nice perks which we really took advantage of. Early shore excursion booking (we got every one we wanted) and early reservations to the specialty restaurants. Also an earlier boarding time which was great. Breakfast was in the main dining room and a buffet, but lots of cook to order choices. There was a specialty buffet every evening and they looked great, however we preferred the restaurants, not only was the food incredible but since we had purchased the Silver Spirts package so was the wine :-) Service was great and you really felt special wherever you were. We had shore excursions in every port and normally the more adventurist ones. The local guides were easy to understand and added great value. We enjoyed the sea day as a time to relax for the rest of the trip. They had a great house band and always ended the day in the cocktail lounge where the bartender always had my favorite drink ready as soon as he saw us walk in. The inhouse entertainment was top notch, great voices and well planned shows. Besides scheduled shows they would also show up in some of the lounges for singing and dancing. This was a trip that cleared a lot off our bucket list. Read Less

We have experienced 2 Viking river cruises in the past and have always received top notch service. The ocean cruise did not disappoint. The smaller cruise vessel made the experience more intimate. Our room was more spacious than other cruise ships. As always, the food and service was exceptional. My sister and niece joined us on our trip and as first time Viking travellers they were very impressed with the itinerary, service and quality of the meals. We opted for to take 6 optional excursions and found they were a good value. The service was good on all the optional excursions. The tour guide on the included Corfu tour was unfriendly and not responsive to your questions. She was our only negative tour experience. The sea was quite rough at night on the trip from Corfu to Dubrovnik but not likely something that could have been prevented. We would definitely take another Viking cruise in the future. Read Less

Daughter and I chose this cruise as she wanted to see the Krka Waterfalls and I wanted to see Pompeii so this cruise was for us. We flew to Madrid for a couple days & took the train to Barcelona which we explored also for a couple days before embarking on ship. Wonderful that we could leave our luggage with Viking before embarking and doing some touring on our own. Our deck 3 deluxe veranda room was large enough for us and enjoyed the small balcony. Plenty of dining, entertainment and activity choices. Service was excellent and included shore excursions & optional excursions also were excellent. Laundry facilities on each deck was exceptional and greatly appreciated. After disembarkation which went very smoothly, we traveled in Italy on our own for 4 days. All around perfect voyage for us so we won't travel on ocean or river cruises on any other cruise line. Read Less

Always wanted to see the Mediterranean countries and the architecture and culture. We had been told about this cruise in 2015 when we were on the Legend The ship was great but the tour company needs to step up their game. Amenities onboard were great and the staff fantastic as you expect from Viking. The various restaurants had excellent food and choices. The staff couldn’t do enough for you. Only problem onboard was the pools are too deep to stand for someone like myself who is 6’1”. Cabin steward Madi excellent . Entertainment was very good and especially in the Atrium after hours. The wine choices were very good as my fellow traveler is a wine expert and did not feel the need to purchase other level wines. I found doing the pre cruise tipping better as I didn’t have to worry about it after the trip and I then could give extra where I felt appropriate. Read Less

We chose this cruise Trade Routes of the middle Ages" due to its diversity of countries having never been to Europe but have taken many ocean cruises before.. arrival a the airport and finding the Viking representatives was swift and all questions asked and guided well (a little tired due to an over night flight with no sleep) to our buses with luggage taken for us. embarkation (and the ship in general) was quick and smooth. our luggage was left for the staff and brought to our rooms by the scheduled 2 pm. during this tie we were able to eat lunch (we were starving) and look around the ship. it is small and well defined and within one day we didnt get lost!! we found representatives all over the ship and easily approachable for directions. found the ship in general too cool for me so sweater was necessary always. Cabin: we were in 4107 which had a balcony, heated floors in the bathrooms, many toiletries a lady would need and replaced as needed without asking, adequate thick towels etc, glassed in shower, adequate places for all your toiletries brought. limited storage for clothes (shorts, etc) not on hangers (which i brought and were used) but we found space. maybe some shelving in the large hanging closet would be a great idea and put the safe in their also. great 40 inch tv which was convenient for local and world news plus movies at out leisure. used the balcony a few times. Dining: it didnt matter where you went. from the world cafe to the Restaurant, it was wonderful with attentive waiters to serve coffee, tea and soda , wine and beer at your discretion. the chefs Table was incredible but only went once. we had the Asian meal which i was afraid i wouldnt like.. impressive... Manfredies was not our favorite and we went once only and cancelled a second. I love italian but was disappointed. too spicy for us. our favorite haunt was The Restaurant where fine dining was different every night with waiters at your beck and call with a smile always.. Entertainment and activities: there was something all day every day for every one. the daily sheet of activities and where to meet for tours was well written allowing any one to plan their day. simple things such as Trivia with new made friends (we came so close so many times) was fun! lectures of WW2 and art lectures and discussion were made available and very interesting and enjoyed. attendances was good. i brought two books. i didnt open either one.. guess i was too busy... night entertainment was good with soloist singers of different types, a soloist pianist (incredible), a magician (who did he do it??). honestly my fave forever was Brian Rodriques, who was an assistant cruise director who sang solo one evening with a packed house. From show tunes to opera, he was incredible evoking emotional responses from many (including myself)/ Thanks Brian for sharing your gift! Service" no matter where on the ship or even off the ship, a Viking representative was available and eager to assist no matter what. even managers of every departments were visible each day and often. Ports and Shore Excursions: most of the included trips were educational and represented by the people of that country. the two i would not recommend were Falmouth and Belgiun as Falmouth itself is a nice quaint little town to visit (and we were there during a festival-which we missed). the included trip to cornwall was uneventful and lack of capability to see any scenery which was special . The included trip not to Brugge but to another town was somewhat okay for a few minutes then lack luster. we were dropped off in the city of " ?" to shop yet the stores were closed. we wanted to get chocolate to purchase but ummm the stores are closed??? the rest of the included trips we took advantage of with also purchasing some. i found the costs reasonable compared to other cruise companies. the best included was paris. yes! its far but once there we saw so much and given time to eat at a side walk cafe and to feel the parisian style. limited shopping was disappointing but all in all we saw so much for no cost to us!!! the only other purchased trip i would ot recommend was Amsterdams Rickmuseum (sp). very confusing, tie wasted, with tour guides (however intelligent to art) but too much time determining who was gong to take whome (limited to 20 each but did not say- you 20 stand here please) and too much detail orientation of one painting limiting us to seeing two paintings in half hour. we finally left the group and met up when we were to leave. as did many. Tak Tak Tak Viking for giving us a beautiful and memorable trip we will never forget even to the end (and in the airport-this after we had filled out our comment forms!!!) we have already planned on a river cruise next year and so looking forward to the next experience!! As the cruising industry keeps making ships bigger, we abandoned that venue. It couldn't deliver the experience we needed. We started river cruising and found that smaller ships, smaller number of passengers, more focus on the educational experience matched our needs. Now Viking has re-invented the ocean cruise experience and delivered beyond our expectations. The ship is perfect. It had the right number of passengers. The open areas were spectacular. The food was terrific. The room was luxurious. The ability to be with a group balanced with being in a quiet one on one area was perfect. The crew addressed our every need. In conversations with them you know that Viking was treating them well and they were loyal to the company. The educational programs was outstanding. Dr Laurie gave us unbelievable insights. The cruise director was informative, engaging and funny. Matching the route to historical events was enlightening and enriching. It seems that every attention to detail really made a difference. We highly recommend this ship and diving back to the ocean cruising experience. Now we can go beyond the rivers and venture back to the seas. Read Less

I took this cruise with all five sisters and spouses. This is the second Viking cruise the ten of us have taken. We began with two extra days in Barcelona. Fantastic decision as it gave us time to see Barcelona and visit many of its attractions. When it was time to embark we everything went somewhat smoothly. Although, the constant TSA like security every time we boarded got old fast. Once on board it took many of us a while before our roo ms were ready. Yet this transition went relatively smooth considering the number of people boarding. As a group we usually ate our meals in the World Cafe. Although, all ten of us did eat at Manfredi's Italian restaurant twice. My wife and I also ate at the Chef's table a couple of times. One thing I learned early is that the World Cafe has two serving lines and generally both lines had different items. One thing about Manfredi's is that one needs to be aware of the amount of food that will be served. You could easily share the pasta, main course and dessert if you want to limit calories. The Chef's table is a more intimate setting. Each course was well described by wait staff and was paired with a fine wine, also well described. I was confused the first time we had reservations. Supposedly the Chef's table was fully booked. Yet when we arrived and during our meal there were a number of open tables. I suspect this allowed staff to focus on those dining while leaving tables for later reservations. There is also the restaurant. If you have sailed on a Viking River Cruise, the restaurant is similar to the River Cruise dining room. My wife and I really enjoyed on visits to the restaurant. However, the majority of my family opted for the World Cafe. I must compliment the Cruise Director and his assistant. They put together a fantastic schedule of daily informational speakers and evening entertainment. The highlight was the last night medley of ABBA (AKA Mama Mia) and Beatles hits. They were successful in getting the older crowd to really get stand and boogie as they completed their ABBA series. The service on board was excellent. I know all passengers were treated well. However, I am not sure that there were many on the Viking Star that received the personal attention most of my family did. Probably due to some of the very outgoing personalities evident in my family. I was actually surprised that most of the wait staff not only knew my name but also my wife's. If there was any disappointment on this trip is was some of the excursions. A caveat here is that excursions were operated by contractors and not Viking, unlike river cruises. A couple of times the bus ride for the included tours were so long that there wasn't much time for walking around. Although we were pretty happy with the optional tours we booked. My favorite was Normandy Beach. We figured the trip to Paris wouldn't give us enough time to do anything but see the sights. We could do that with pictures. On the Normandy Beach option we saw a lot of WWII history, including information about how allied military actually moved men and machines into France after the invasion. The various bunkers, military equipment and remains of the landing harbor really should impress the WWII buff. As an aside, we really loved the Porto, Portugal excursion. My wife and I spent our Honeymoon in Portugal, including a couple of nights in Porto. We talked about returning for our fifth anniversary. We didn't make it. We were 17 years late. So who's counting? One thing I should note. There was a jigsaw puzzle available to complete. Evidently it had never been done during the time of a cruise. However, we did complete it. Our cruise ended in Bergen, Norway. The included tour of Bergen allowed us time to take pictures from various locations around the town. We then were left in town to find our way back. We had the opportunity to hear a number of drum corps during the drum corps competition. We, as a family of ten, added a local three hour Fjord cruise. We were very pleased with this addition. While this tour didn't offer any narrative, we had the opportunity to see a part of Norway and the Bergen area that others didn't get a chance to do. An interesting sidelight was the opportunity to drink water taken from a local waterfall. The tour boat captain motored his boat to the cliff where the water fell. As he did a crew member used a pail that was on the end of a ten foot pole to catch this refreshing drink. Disembarkation went smoothly. Once at the airport reality set in and we had to get ready for the trip back to home. Would we do this cruise again? Definitely. However, we would be more aware of the various options and would research the actual port and its amenities before considering included excursions. I would have added a couple of pictures but there was a problem with the program. Sorry. Read Less

This was our first Viking cruise and it was a wow. We chose Trade Routes because of the itinerary and excursions. It was a wonderful way to overview several countries in great style. The Star is a beautiful smaller ship with gorgeous venues, excellent restaurants and service. We thought the buffet was very special with a raw seafood bar and different specialties everyday. The main dining rooms were spacious and comfortable. Viking also has a chef table and Italian restaurant choices included in the price which were very good. We purchased the drink package which was wonderful and reasonable. I cannot say enough about our staff and how comfortable they made us feel from the start of our cruise until our last morning off the ship. All excursions were great and we took both included and optional. Two of our favorites were Monet's estate and Cornwall. We also booked a two night precruise with Viking in Madrid and the hotel was magnificent and we enjoyed a museum and tapas evening tour. I would recommend this cruise for a first timer going to Europe or retuning for another visit. I hope to return to Viking again to try a river cruise. Our cabin was lovely and had a nice balcony with heated bathroom floors and beautiful gels and lotions. Read Less

This is our third Viking cruise and our first Ocean Viking Cruise. We loved it. The ship is stunning, comfortable, and spacious. Nothing was ever crowded. Getting off and on for excursions was efficient. The staff always smiling, open, friendly no matter where you were on the ship. We took excursions in every port and they didn't dissappoint. We had been to Amsterdam before but spent most of our time in the old city. This time our excursion started with a bus trip around the new city, a stop at a windmill, a walking tour through old city. THEN...we boarded a canal boat for a wonderful lunch while we cruised through the canals. All the while with expert and witty commentary from our guide. To cap off the tour we walked to the VanGogh museum for an afternoon guided tour. I was in heaven!! Our tour to Giverny from LeHavre was a similiar experience to Monet's house and garden with lunch at a wonderful old forge under huge umbrellas. When we got back to the dock the entire ship's crew were lined up with music and clapping and champagne to welcome us back on board ! Loved it ! Food on board ship was great. Lots of variety and always available. Our cabin was always ship shape thanks to Super and Riv. I have to say my very favorite thing (and there is quite a choice) was the infinity pool. Nothing like floating off the back of the ship with a tall glass in hand toasting a wonderful day as we pull out of port. Love it. Read Less

We chose this cruise because my husband likes the warm weather of southern Europe and I prefer the cooler northern climes. This cruise had something for both of us and took us places we had never been before. It was very interesting to have it themed to the explorers of the middle ages--we really enjoyed the lectures and enrichment activities. The shore excursions were so incredibly well organized--small groups, no waiting, comfortable buses (mostly) and knowledgeable local guides. I would prefer throwing my money off the veranda into the sea to gambling in a casino so the lack of casinos was absolutely no loss to me. The entertainment was nice--the performers were very good. The production values weren't Vegas, but, again, that is not why we chose this trip. We had fun at the performances we chose to attend. And, while I love children, I enjoy the quieter, slower, rather genteel travel opportunity to swimming pools and other venues full of screaming, poorly supervised kiddos. Call me crabby! The spa was great--so relaxing it was hard to walk back to our stateroom! The food was wonderful. Every meal in the restaurant had standard offerings every day (ie chicken, salmon, steak), local food, and some pretty snazzy special items like lobster, Chateaubriand, soft shell crabs, scrumptious fresh tuna--on and on. The specialty restaurants were very good, too, but we preferred the regular restaurant. The buffets were also outstanding. The only thing about the restaurant that I was a bit disappointing for us was that we were always seated at a table for two. Sometimes, conversation was possible with the tables on each side, but sometimes you were on your own. I really enjoy mealtime as a time for socializing and would have liked to be seated with other couples at the larger tables. (Now that I think about it, I probably could have asked for that, but never thought of it!) On the river cruise we took, we had the opportunity to eat with almost everyone on the ship--much more fun. We finished our trip with a three day extension in Iceland, which was very interesting and fun. The great service we experience on board continued in Reykjavik. Terrific hotel accommodations. Our guide was amazing. As on all the excursions during the whole cruise, entry fees were paid in advance and there was no waiting for anything. We will definitely cruise Viking again--we love the small ship format and the ambiance. We have met lovely people from all over the world. We also love the people on the crew who seem genuinely committed to making your trip memorable. In the future, I might explore arranging my own flights, because Viking Air is not always the most direct or the fastest. On the other hand, they are usually reasonably priced and guarantee that you will get to the ship. Read Less

From start to finish the cruise was a great experience. The staff on the Viking Star was so welcoming and always ready to make our cruise a wonderful vacation. The Trade Route of Middle Ages was a fantastic journey with visits to 7 countries with 10 ports. Embarkation area in Barcelona was very nice with a comfortable reception area complete with drinks, snacks and nice seating area. (our travel companions had arrived earlier and were there waiting for us) Check in personnel was adequate and the process was quick. The ship is very well appointed both in style and facilities. There always seemed to be a staff member positioned in just the right place....if you had a question or needed direction. The food service was varied with snacks, light meals, relaxed seating or formal destinations at your disposal. The specialty restaurants (no extra charge) required reservations which were not difficult to acquire. Manfredi's Italian was a favorite of ours and the Norwegian experience at the Chef's Table was truly a special meal with its wine pairings. The included wine and beer with lunch and dinner is a valuable feature on Viking as is their relaxed rule about bringing one's own spirits aboard. Our stateroom on level 5 was nicely appointed and always clean and neat. Cindy was so very attentive to our every want and need. The extra hangers that we requested were more than sufficient although I do believe that a little more drawer or shelf space would be a good addition. Suggestion: one of the two pillows (each side) might include a firmer option. The included tours were good and we availed ourselves of most of them. Our previous experience with Viking River Tours prepared us for the value of this perk. We did book the Mijas excursion...a very nice little mountain town and worth the price. Also the Norwegian Farm tour (Bergen) was a unique experience and very well done. The Bruges tour with included canal ride was also a good choice. We took Amsterdam included tour and then visited the Riksmuseum on our own. The tram system, near the ship, made the trip very easy. I will admit that the Viking staff was a little confused as to how/where to purchase tram tickets but the IAmsterdam staff near the Central train station was helpful. Entertainment was good and we enjoyed the variety of the evening shows, TED talks, special speakers and the daily port talks by staff. We took in the Movie under the stars by the pool and it was a great experience...complete with blankets and popcorn. The Afternoon Tea service in the Wintergarten was a lovely time with great food, great service and great conversation. We also used the Wintergarten area for a game of cards or quiet conversation with friends. It was easy to stay active on the ship with walks around the ample decks of this smaller cruise ship, the fitness center and the spa area; all nicely appointed and staffed. Twister46 Read Less

We had previous experience with a 15 day river cruise in 2014 from Budapest to Amsterdam. Wanted to see if the Ocean going cruise would be as great. Had researched many cruise lines and the single most item why we choose Viking was the previous river cruise and the fact this Viking ship did not carry as many passengers as the other cruise lines. We were looking forward to seeing many different countries in Europe. We loved the ship it was almost exactly what we expected. The staff is very simple superb, friendly and helpful at all times. Execution of all aspect of this voyage were flawless and logical. All shore excursion and returns were executed with logical sequence and always pleasant. When we made our reservation we informed my brother who also signed up for this cruise the very next day. My wife also informed her best friend in Arizona who did sign up as well. My brother and his son were able to get the cabin next to us, and my wife's girlfriend and her son got the cabin directly above us. Unfortunately the cabin was not pleasant nor conducive to good nights of sleep. The very first day we noticed that we were unable to turn the HV/AC blower off and there was a constant droning noise at 40db coming from the vent. After several phone calls to staff they were unable to resolve this issue. By the 3rd day I had a very sore throat, and at best we slept maybe 3.5 to 4 hours a night. On the 4th day a ships engineer came out to try and solve the problem. He finally figured out that our cabin environmental controls were tied to the ships hallway HV/AC and could not be shut off. The engineer solution was to bring about a 6' piece of insulation to close the vent and try to mitigate the droning noise. It helped in reducing the constant air movement somewhat but the noise at night was still very intrusive and lack of sleep was still a problem. I have pictures of this "fix" but I don't see were in this review I can attach them. We were offered a cabin on deck five but we declined. We had friends and relatives traveling with us and the move would diminish our experience even more. When we made the reservation we asked to be close together in our cabin choices, and to be on the same Buses in some of our shore excursions. In conclusion I would say that this particular cabin should never have been sold to a customer on this ship. I don't know if anyone has ever lodge a complaint about this problem cabin, but in my opinion the cabin should be converted to some thing the staff can use or maybe another laundry for the convenience of travelers on the 7th deck. I hope you can understand that we are now somewhat reluctant to plan another voyage on one of your otherwise very modern and beautiful kept ships for fear of having to put up with another insolvable problem that could ruin what was otherwise a very exiting and wonderful voyage. This was our first cruise with Viking and we couldn't be happier. Their service is amazing, and the crew is always greeting you with smiles. The decor was very Scandanavian with clean lines. I can't say enough about how spotless everything was on board the ship. Our stateroom attendant was there to greet us, and he took amazing care of us the entire trip. We loved to eat in the Restaurant, our favorite place, and the food and service was impeccable. The entertainment on the ship was ok...we loved the magician, the cruise director, Nolan's show, and the wonderful talent of the assistant cruise director! The included shore excursions were wonderful with the exception of the Porto, Portugal tour. Our only downsides: the pools are too deep! You should have a pool that people can stand in. We didn't like that there was no shallow portion. All areas of the pool were deep. We don't like paying for any trip so far in advance, and Viking is the ONLY line that requires this. We were all set with our seats and airline reservations. When we received our travel documents, our seats were on them. However when we checked in, the airline did not have us in those seats, or any seats for that matter. We had to pay to upgrade so we could sit together and there were only 2 seats together on the plane that were left, both in the exit row. Viking refused to reimburse us for the cost of these seats, and they blamed it on the airline. THAT was extremely irritating and WRONG! Read Less

For us this cruise was chosen more for the ship and duration than destinations as we were already familiar with many of them. The Viking Star is a lovely ship and the public areas and lounges are really great with space always available to sit commfortably. Our cabin was all that we wished for and in our opinion anything of higher grade would not be worth the extra money. The cabin was kept immaculate by the charming crew and any requests were met very promptly. One day we returned during the cleaning and though the bed was made it was damp at the edges. When I queried this I was told that to remove any wrinkles they spray a little water. Just like home then? We found the dining in the restaurant was good though sometimes service was slow. Most food was really good though a couple of dishes were disappointing. The buffet was OK but anything cooked to order took a long time. The worst experience for us was when we ordered a premium wine and a wine glass could not be found so we drank from a tumbler. The much vaunted icecream didn't seem that special. The Chef's table concept didn't really appeal though the food was good as were the paired wines. Manfredi's was for us the best of all and we went several times and reservations were never a problem. Once there was a long wait to be seated and served. Lunch at the pool bar was good and service quick. Mamsen's was good for something different. We were really impressed by the quality and range of entertainment on offer both in the theatre and around the ship. The service must be one of the hgh points of this ship and most crew members were happy and helpful.Bar staff in particular were great fun and it was always a pleasure to see them. We took the drinks package and we think it paid off for us. Soft drinks seemed to be free during the day and wine and beer are included with meals but access to better wines was nice especially in the speciality restaurants. As stated the destinations were not a priority for us but those excursions we did take were pretty average. Catagena in particular was a waste of time as to reach the advertised Roman theatre there was a long ride and the theatre was actually 100m from the ship. With few exceptions the people we met were friendly and interesting and we would certainly consider further cruises with Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the many venues. Generally we skipped the ones that involved long bus rides. I'm much happier being dropped off in town and allowed to explore on my own. The food was middling--not much to write home about! (except for the ice cream) The Chef's Table was a major disappointment. They might try concentrating on a particular culture rather than trying to fuse them into one meal that was far more than I could comfortably eat. We cancelled our remaining reservations. Manfredi's, on the other hand, was great, both the service and the meals. Our biggest disappointment and very difficult part of our journey was the two-day extension. For one thing, we couldn't get into our hotel in Bergen until later in the day so we were put on a bus to visit the same places we had visited the day before. The second day was a nightmare. The 7 ½ hour train journey to Oslo was as beautiful as advertised. However, even though Viking provided us with vouchers for food, there wasn't enough to go around. When we arrived in Oslo, we were, once more, put on another bus to tour Oslo. The city itself is beautiful and we had, by far, the best tour guide of the entire two weeks. The hotel was another matter. 90 degrees weather, no air conditioning, no working sink in the bathroom. We were told just to brush teeth in the shower! That was not what we paid for I would like to go back to Norway on my own because it truly is a beautiful country. Read Less

First, I should state that we took this cruise at the urging of our travel agents, The Roaming Boomers. Our initial plans were to book on Crystal Serenity. The text below was posted by me on Cruise Critic after our cruise: “We just returned from “The Trade Route of the Middle Ages” voyage on the Viking Star. This was our first Viking cruise so I thought I would share some thoughts. Our previous cruise history includes numerous voyages on HAL, Celebrity, and Princess. In 2017 we sailed Oceania on the Riviera. Our particular cruise was recently reviewed by another member, so I thought I would just provide some general impressions, rather than including a discussion about the ports. I must say that, overall, we were very pleased. The Star really is a well designed ship. The service onboard far exceeded any of our prior cruises. The attention to detail was very noticeable. Our favorite venue was the Explorers Lounge which was a great place to listen to music nightly before dinner. In general, the quality of the food was excellent. We ate at Manfredi’s on 3 occasions and enjoyed it very much. I mentioned that the service was excellent. We were surprised when we disembarked that there were at least 10 Viking associates, positioned along the exit path, to guide us as we left the ship. Upon entering the terminal, there were people with signs pointing in the direction of our luggage. When we located our luggage, they were taken by local teenagers, acting as porters, to our awaiting bus. A Viking representative then boarded our bus and accompanied us to the airport to see that we went to the proper lines for check-in. All were noticeably identified by red Viking colors. We were really surprised as on other cruises you were generally on your own when you exited the ship. Another surprise was the level of entertainment. The cruise director, Nolan Dean, really made you feel welcomed. The assistant cruise director, Brian Rodriguez, was an amazing singer and performed in his own show one evening. All three of the in-house musical performers were excellent. We really enjoyed the classical trio as they performed in several venues nightly. Viking will probably be our favored line going forward. We booked another cruise while onboard; something we have never done before. They are expanding rapidly, so I do hope they can maintain the quality. I find the expansion interesting as, to my knowledge, Oceania has no new builds scheduled. Viking is opening a 3rd U. S. location in Tempe, Az this month. It will be only a 10 minute drive from the Phoenix airport. I suspect, this is only my opinion, that sometime in the future one of the other sites (California and Massachusetts) might be consolidated in Tempe as the cost of doing business is less expensive. One last thought concerns the classical trio. A Viking staff member mentioned that the contract with European talent agency used to provide the classical musicians is being discontinued. An American agency will be taking its place. The plans include reducing the group to just two musicians from the current three. That just seems like a totally unnecessary change. The current arrangement seems to work so well, that it just seems like a poor decision to reduce the number of musicians.” Read Less

Friends asked if we would like to join them. Our first and with somewhat of a surprise we were delighted Of course with exception. The change in flight schedule. Then loss of a day in Barcelona our debating port. Worsened by bad flight connections. And loss of another day in Barcelona The ships crew was most friendly The food particularly breakfast and lunch very good. Dinner not so. But not bad. Fresh fruit always seemed available and most welcome. Making reservations was impossible but we survived without them. Although incredibly hurried the wait staff was most cordial and helpful throughout our journey The accommodations were very good. Everything about the cabin was quite good. Even the small but accompanying balcony We were concerned about the 900 people capacity but not to be a concern as we never felt crowded. Even at meal times. Will we do it again? Looking forward to a river cruise. Read Less

All the hype couldn’t wait to cruise this line. The ship was beautiful, the staff and service was wonderful. Embarkment was ok except when came on had to leave luggage in lounge and claim later did own transfers. The cabin was Good but I have had nicer on other ships. PV1...Dining was also good not spectacular. The open table with wine pairings was the best. Manfredos was nothing special. We did not do any entertainment outside of hearing music here and there and high tea which was nice. Our excursions were early and the talks seemed to be during dinner. It was nice that it was a small ship and no children. The silver drink package was well worth the money as the pours are much better then the included drinks. That being said we did optional excursions which for the most part were good, but we got abandoned on one and spent a lot of time with guest services and excursions trying to remedy the situation. We imagine older guests should beware. The reluctance of the line to remedy the situation for a small amount of money when the tour did not follow Viking standards was disappointing. Small things like not having an ATM on board was a big inconvenience in Europe. Overall we had a nice cruise but we are not in any hurry to board Viking unless the itinerary warrants. Read Less

We choose this cruise because it was advertised as 2 days in Barcelona and 2 days in Florence. We were very disappointed because several months before the departure we were notified that we were only going to be in Barcelona until 10:00 P.M. This left us 11 hours to see Barcelona after an all night flight! We did not get to see Florence at all because you had to add on an excursion to do that. Had we know we were not going to see Barcelona, we would have added on to the beginning of the trip. But it was too late to change our plane tickets! The other ports they added, Palamos, and St. Topez were boring The ship and cabin were very nice. The lunch and dinner dining were exceptional, but the breakfast left a lot to be desired. The entertainment was fair, but we have experience much better on other cruise lines. The service was first rate. The free shore excursions were fair, but the ones we paid for was excellent. The embarkation and disembarkation was smooth, but the staff at the embarkation seemed very unsure about when the ship was leaving port. We had previously been told 10 P.M., but as we boarded the sign said 5 P.M. We asked 5 staff members and no one seemed to know. It would have also been nice to know that there was a free shuttle bus to take you into the city. We paid for transportation. We would NOT go again unless we could be sure that we were getting the trip which was advertised Read Less

We had cruised with Carnival and Princess before and this year went upscale to a Viking Med. Ocean Cruise with our brother and wife as travel partners. The positives: 1) Food was excellent, 2) Less crowds with smaller passenger loads. The negatives: 1) Simple requests required escalation to management. We had a plumbing problem with the shower, special requests for honor bar drinks, that took several calls, finally to the customer service manager to resolve. 3) Our deck four laundry was broken more than it was working and the response to get it fixed was poor. 4) Some shore excursions, especially the one to Pisa was poorly managed for toilet breaks...in this case no breaks until the end of the bus ride and tour during our short free time. 5) The Spa was hard to get appointments for a simple pedicure (again requiring elevation to mgt) and this costly pedicure's quality was sub par for the $69 price tag. 6) The ship cancelled one of two days in Barcelona (a big disappointment) and getting reservations at times desired for fine dining and shore excursions was onerous, even though we reserved early. 7) Lastly, Viking seeks manual input surveys for feedback but in a short cruise with no sea days there was virtually no way to get these forms back in...they truly need an online survey system and allow customers up to a month to provide input...subsequently they probably do not get an adequate sample size. In summary, Viking costs quite a bit more than the traditional big carriers and for that cost we had many reasonable expectations that were not met.... while we enjoyed this cruise could and should have been better managed. Perhaps they are still in a learning curve with ocean cruises, an off shoot of their river cruises that they are known for. Read Less
