Having sailed previously on Azamara in spring 2009, I was especially curious about the new changes on this cruise. All of the described changes as listed in the new brochure are in place. Unlimited wine with lunch and dinner in all venues,bottled spring water anywhere on the ship, cans of soft drinks available anywhere on the ship including extra cans in the stateroom refrigerator, Cova specialty coffee, included gratuities,and free self serve laundry. The wine was good...and it was poured freely. Soft drinks were very nice while sitting by the pool or in a lounge. Cova coffee was outstanding. I had never tried before on my many Celebrity/Azamara cruises because it was an additional charge. If they had given each guest a free taste of the coffee, I'm sure that I would have purchased more cups...it's that good. The ship is still beautiful. Our veranda cabin was small, but comfortable. Ample room to store our clothes. Bags went under the beds easily. Veranda had 2 chairs and a table. Our cabin stewardess, Maria kept everything clean and neat. The new attendant costumes may not be fancy like the previous butler costume, but the staff likes it better. They said it was more comfortable to work in. Regardless of the uniform, the butler/attendants do a good job. Bathrooms are very small. Taking a shower with the shower curtain closed is a challenge...okay when the ship is in port...when the ship is at sea, the curtain can swing into you. Since the shower head is a hand held unit, keeping the shower curtain open works well. If water gets on the floor, there is a drain in the floor. There are plenty of hooks (6) on the bathroom door, 3 glass shelves, and enclosed cabinet with 3 more shelves. Under the sink, there is another large shelf. The cabin could use some updating. New beds or mattresses would be an improvement, cabin furnishings are showing wear, and the carpets need to be replaced. It didn't hinder our cruise, but Azamara should pay attention to the furnishings. Excursions were very good. Guides were very informative. Hosts that went along on the excursions were excellent. Liszl was superb. Our thanks to the excursion staff for their splendid efforts to make our cruise great. Food was good to great. Prime C was as good as ever. Aquilina is a close 2nd. The MDR is always nice. They try hard to please. My favorite waiter Philip was a gem. The buffet had interesting choices. Pool grill also changed some of their offerings. Room service was good and quick. Heike, the hotel director, was excellent. She always had a gorgeous smile on her face. No problem was too much for her to solve. It was obvious that the staff enjoys working with her. One of the nicest experiences of our cruise was the opportunity to dine with Heike and other selected guests one evening. A splendid evening of good wine, great food, and excellent service. The group photo was also a nice touch. We had a great time. Cruise was relaxing. I just hope that with the new price increases, they don't price themselves too high to continue. The relaxed style is a plus. Also, not having many kids on board is very nice. I love leaving the formal clothes home. I enjoy meeting and dining with a wide variety of guests. A beautiful cruise. Thanks to Heike and her staff for an excellent vacation. Read Less

It was my first cruise with Azamara, the first of two cruises booked with them. I didn't enjoy any single part of this cruise and feel "ripped off" as I did the last time we travelled with RCI. There were some points that were good, these being a nice cabin, nice ship, good service, good organisation at ports. Now for the bad points: The day time activities were beyond poor; a few trivia quizzes on sea days and two uninteresting lecturers, one talking about the past history of the ports being visited and one discussing whether China was defensive or aggressive. Certainly not topics that most women onboard would want to attend and not interesting to me. The entertainment by the visiting entertainers was reasonably good but the shows put on by Eric, the ships entertainment director and the ships singers and dancers was poor. I was fed up of seeing and listening to the narcissic Eric at every end and turn and the singers overall were far too loud and the words of unknown songs could not be distinguished. Overall, other than the visiting entertainers, the routines were amateurish. The guitar player was too monotonous and the ships pianist whilst good on the one night he played in the theatre but for the rest of the time was mundane. Few people attended the Living Room after 9:30 pm so dancing was none existent. It seemed to me that most people went to bed early. The ship in the evening was dead. However, what really upset me most was the poor quality of the food. My wife, daughter and daughter in law are all excellent cooks and we all enjoy quality food. My grandson is a trained chef and his chef uncle on the other side of the family has cooked not just for me but for Margaret Thatcher, The Queen, the late King Hussain of Jordan and Sir James Goldsmith. I know what represents good food and this didn't come anywhere near the mark. I don't believe the chefs are chefs, they are poor cooks. Breakfast was OK in the Windows restaurant although there was no Finnan Haddock and no Kippers. Lunchtime on sea days in Discoveries restaurant was uninspiring so most meals were taken in Windows Cafe. This was also disappointing as no meals were enjoyable. it was just food. Individual bowls of tomatoe, cucumber, onion, peppers and chicken served one day were in my opinion used the following day by turning them into a special salad using all of the same components. On several nights there was a theme, Indian, Morrocan and British. I decided to try the British night, my home country. Fish and chips were on the menu but I have to say that there isn't one British fish and chip shop who would offer the meagre portion of fish served by the server. There is more fish in a half a fish finger and the server then asked "Do you want one or two pieces". It was clear to me that the ships budget is limited in cost. Pasta and chicken dishes in Windows cafe and Discoveries restaurant predominate the menus. On the day of the barbecue it was held indoors. I asked why and they said it was the likelihood of rain but it was a sunny day and as we were only a few days into a long cruise it could have been postponed to another day but wasn't. There was not one single barbecue item, not a single sausage. Inferior chicken was offered wrapped in breadcrumbs to disguise the bone and gristle. A poor representation of a real barbecue. On another occasion in the cafe lamb hock was offered but since when has a lamb hock had a knee joint? After a few days of poor food I confronted the two Head waiters but it didn't make any difference. The menu in Discoveries restaurant is basically 75% the same every evening. So called specials make up the rest. Yet on one evening there was two chicken dishes and two broiled New York Steaks so limiting the choice further. One night I had the seafood soup. On the following night I had a different seafood soup but it was the same one as the day before: one prawn, one mussel and some clams. On the last night I had a lamb hock. I don't however believe it was lamb as the bones were far too big for a lamb and more likely to have been mutton. This was not five star food, I have been served better food in a works canteen. There was no sirloin steaks, no rump steaks, no steak Diane, no Tounedos Rossini, no cod loin, no chateaubriand. I have had those on other ships along with first class enrichment lectures and entertainment at less than half the price paid to Azamara. Since when has skirt from the bottom of a cow been served as a steak? The coffee in the Mosaic cafe was poor and several other people commented about this. Finally why do professional cocktail makers use measuring cups when dispensing the components of a cocktail when on Azamara the components are dispensed without regard to using the correct measures? Every drink served varies from the last one. All in all a thoroughly unenjoyable cruise. Whilst on the ship I contacted my travel agent and cancelled the second paid in full future cruise on Azamara. I will never travel with Azamara or RCI ever again. Read Less

We picked Azamara because of the itinerary: three ports in Cuba. The price was high, but it was billed as a "premium line" so we thought the cost would be worth the experience. We loved Cuba; I had arranged private guides through FerTours (hats off to Alex!) in Havana and Cienfuegos and through Out of the Box tours in Santiago (Lisandra did an excellent job). In all three cities we traveled in early 1950's cars and the cost was far lower than the bus tours offered on Journey. Our cabin was drab and it was hard to believe the ship had been renovated. The bed was comfortable and the storage was ample. The bathroom was tiny and the shower had been designed for elves. The food on the ship was always available, but the only good meals we had were in the extra cost restaurants. We ate at Prime C twice and Aqualina (delicious Dover sole) once. The service in Discovery, the main dining room, was very slow and the meats (beef and veal) were beyond tough. We discovered that sticking with fish and seafood gave us the best chance for an edible dinner. The food at the White Night buffet was good, but the crowds made getting near your choices very hard. The brunch that was held once was also good. The service on the ship was excellent. Doug Cameron, a fabulous jazz violinist, entertained twice; we could have seen him every night. We will definitely see him if he ever comes to our town. Our trip was successful because we loved seeing Cuba, but we are still wondering why Azamara is a premium line. Read Less

My husband & I & our adult son have just returned from our, carefully researched and happily anticipated cruise around Indonesia. Our son has, well controlled & monitored, Bi Polar Disorder. Our staterooms were comfortable. The food was good quality in both the buffet & main dining room. the 'Brunch was a standout. Service there was very good. We also ate in Prime specialty restaurant & it was excellent. The public spaces were pleasant & cabin attendants very good. All of these aspects validate the value of a cruise. These things, however, pale into insignificance if our priority of emotional well being is not met. The Hotel Manager, on this Azamara Journey, comprehensively failed to give this to us. To facilitate making his job easy, he sacrificed our holiday to maintain the status quo for the ' regular ' Client Base & the staff. The surreal atmosphere, once in board this ship, was one of ' team staff ' & ' team cruiser ' all working together for the elusive Superior Azamara Brand. Our son was involved in an incident of indiscretion one evening for which he apologized & expressed his great regret. After enjoying just 4 beers, he was refused service at the ' pool bar ', ( because he had had too much to drink the afternoon before ) After that , he had made a firm conviction not to drink too much. We were with him & he was happy & not inebriated. Because he was refused service, on this occasion, he became bewildered and with disappointment he kicked a bucket of ice being moved, on the ground, into the back of the bar, unintentionally slightly bruising the leg of the bar staff member who was moving it. No passages were in jeopardy of having their cruise spoiled & staff were not in danger. He was ' Tried & judged ' by the Hotel Manager. Regardless of our resounding reassurance of " no chance of re occurrence ". Heavy handed punishment was inflicted on my son ( accompanied by a strongly implied threat of being evicted from the ship if the punitive conditions were not adhered to. ) I was an after hours manager for 30 years at a large private hospital, dealing with some extremely difficult situations, so I was astounded by the Hotel Managers lack of intelligent empathy that resulted in the discrimination that destroyed our holiday... for all of us....... ( in support of my son, who was summoned to the Managers office, I was forced to miss my highlight excursion to Borobudur, our main reason for going to this part of the world ) So........ take care, & be warned, fellow cruisers, if you choose to sail on the good ship Azamara Journey, never make a single mistake & play your part in the ' team effort ' game.......because you will not be afforded a second chance to redeem yourself........... We chose the Aramara journey because we wanted a luxury holiday to celebrate our 70th birthday and we thought that Azamara would be a luxury trip. The prices are certainly luxury. The first disappointment was the cabin, especially the bathroom. My husband couldn't get in the shower and the cabin was very small. As it was a very rough crossing we had to spend a lot of time in the cabin. the engine noise was right outside the our cabin and it was noisy all night and day and prevented us sleeping. I did ask to be moved but was told there was nothing available except the cabin opposite which had the same noise problem. The lack of tea and coffee in the room was inconvenient although you could request this and wait for it to be delivered. As we weren't sleeping this would have helped if it had been in the room. The entertainment was dire. I have never seen such rubbish and we stopped going to any concerts. The entertainments officer Eric was brilliant although his staff left a lot to be desired especially the DJ. The food was faultless although as the trip was very rough a lot of the passengers didn't make it to the dining room. We couldn't use the pool a lot of the time and I think that the ship struggling in the rough weather partly due to its small size. The staff were courteous even when a lot of them were sea sick and we were very impressed with al of them. I would never choose an old ship like this again and it has certainly put me off cruising. What was supposed to be a treat ended up as an ordeal and we were very disappointed. Read Less

First of all, the crew was outstanding and also the entertainment, with the exception of the "amazing evening" which was far below average. The food was good, although on two occasions, when my wife ordered from the menu, she was told that the item was not available. We did not go on any ship excursions so I cannot comment in this area. They ship itself was well-maintained, the elevators were prompt and there were many restrooms spread around the ship for convenience. I've been on approximately 130 cruises, top to bottom, and I was expecting those "extra touches" that would make Azamara a notch above Celebrity, NCL, etc. Did not find them. To me, it's the little things that make a difference and these were lacking on the Journey. For example, there were no bananas displayed for breakfast or lunch. They were available but you had to ask or go to a special window. The volume on our TV would go no lower than "10" on the volume scale. We play trivia often; but, half of the time, it was in a room too small and passengers had to lug chairs around for the game. I expected after dinner mints. There were none. Dinner service in the main dining room was "hit or miss". On more than one occasion, we waited and waited for our next course. My wife and I enjoy a glass of wine with our meals however the included wine was quite acid. After a day or two, we switched to mixed drinks. We enjoyed trivia and played about twice a day. Half of the time, we could not understand the person conducting the trivia because of language problems. At the end of the cruise, we looked forward to receiving T-shirts, along with about 25 other people. When the T-shirts were brought out, it was announced that only small and medium sizes were available. The larger sizes had been handed out on previous cruises. Not a way to run a ship! Again, these are examples of why Azamara is not "upscale" I'd suggest cruising on a Celebrity ship. A wonderful balance of cost and quality. Read Less

We booked this back to back a year before whilst on the Journey. Check in at Singapore was the worst we’d experienced in our long cruising history. Once aboard the customary welcome glass of champagne was not offered although other guests were walking around with them. In fairness our balcony cabin was lovely - spotless clean with regular towel/bedding changes. Our biggest disappointment was the very poor inferior entertainment. No singers and dancers but a group of four opera singers who are excellent performers but I felt totally inappropriate for a cruise. Their repertoire was far too ‘high brow’ for a relaxing.cruise holiday. The only outstanding performer was Kim Purling. We’d seen him on another cruise and he is an amazing pianist which put all the other acts to shame. There was a has been singer from Las Vegas, a has been comedienne from Australia and other embarrassing performances. I have never walked out of a show before but couldnt stand to sit through these acts. Cruise director Eric did his best to hold things together with his shows. White night has now passed its sell by date as it is so predictable and not so good without singers and dancers. On the plus side we experienced two brilliant Azamaing Evenings. The crew were as welcoming as ever and the service was good. Food was excellent with steaks being the best at sea!.we won’t be rushing back to Azamara. Read Less

Sydney to Auckland, Feb18. First impressions were excellent, the online check in made things an absolute breeze, we were onboard the ship by 1pm, which gave us plenty of time to become familiar with her. The Journey is a lovely well maintained ship, very clean. Our cabin on Deck 4 was located midship starboard side around 5 cabins down from the Starboard Gangway but was extremely quiet the whole time we were onboard even with the gangway being utilised. Our cabin was extremely clean, the en suite was on the small side and if you're a big guy then you have to turn sideways on to the shower to fit your shoulders in. The plastic shower curtain is USELESS would be so much better if they just had a glass door. Our cruise was 14 days, we had plenty of storage space and for the first time on 5 different cruise lines I was able to put my Extra Large Samsonite Hardcase under the bed (big plus). Our Cabin Attendants Louis and Reynaldo met us, fantastic guys, who delivered excellent service with a smile or joke every time we met them. They kept the cabin absolutely immacuate. As for the food, well the Main Dining Room was good, good choices and well cooked etc etc as you'd expect. The Buffet up at Windows Cafe, even though it had a number of speciality nights, we saw time after time, the same deserts, the same pasteries, the same sushi served up lunch and dinner. The Chefs Top Table was a STUNNER brilliant, great food, great wine and great company. Prime C Steakhouse the food was average but it was brilliant in Aqualina, as was the service. Coffee was out and out DISASTER and NOT WORTH DRINKING. Getting served UHT Milk for coffee whilst the ship was visiting two of the BEST Dairy Nations in the world is simply not on. As for the Coffee, the beans must have been roasted badly because the coffee was full of acid, no balance and very little favour. Onboard Entertainment to these Aussies was POOR. 54 may have been great for the Americans onboard but to anyone else it was so so. No Presentations on the history of New Zealand etc etc other than the Shore Excursions was pretty poor. That said we had the only Presenter Dr Michael Fopp do outstanding presentations on the Battle of Britain, Early Female Flyers etc etc. The Public Rooms were all excellent and very very comfortable. The ship only has 690 passengers maximum onboard so it was always possible to get a seat except at 6pm for Dinner at the Discoveries Bar or the Sunset Bar on the stern if the ship was sailing. The Itinerary was wonderful with plenty of time in the various ports we visited. Gave us plenty of time to wander around or take up shore excursions. Picton is just gorgeous whilst Napier with its Art Deco buildings was also a highlight. Milford Sound we arrived with grey skies but the sun rose and the sky cleared to show Milford in all its glory. We met a number of the Officers and Crew, all of whom were very nice and would take the time to have a chat with you. Finally the Onboard TV Entertainment was woeful. Documentaries were over 20 years old in some cases, whilst the movie selection was limited and repeated after a couple of days. The first cruise line to introduce a system like the In Flight Entertainment one finds available onboard a flight with Emirates, Singapore or Qantas Airlines will make a killing. No excuse in this day and age of technology for ships not to have such an entertainment system available to its passengers given ships have more space to carry such systems than aircraft. If the airlines can do it, the cruise industry should be doing it as well. Overall, we enjoyed the cruise because of the itinerary and the ships crews. The things listed above if improved would see the Journey really at the top of its game. Read Less

We made the Singapore cruise to Bali last January of this year. It was our 4th cruise on Azamara, and number 12 of all we did. And the experience was not as good as we used to Azamara All protocol, cleaning, food, etc. was fulfilled But it lacked the "extra touch" that showed that the company was really interested in passengers. Entertainment was poor, The average age of the passengers must be 55/60 years. And we did not get the disc jockey to put on music that we could dance (with one exception of one night). The food was healthy but extremely boring in the main dining room. The shore excursions are badly organized. They had a central focus, for example, the Borobudur temple in Java, but in a 10-hour trip, we could only spend 1 hour in that wonderful place, the rest of the time in places that were not worth it. The same happened in the excursion in the north of Bali. In both, they should have provided us all with lunch boxes since the food that was included was full of flies !! (my husband and I take that forecast and end up sharing it with other passengers). Very good idea the special night with the music and culture of Bali. But nobody explained the meaning and symbols of the characters, the story, the gestures. And we lost a chance to understand such a different culture. And what ended up as a signal that the concern for the passengers was superficial was the landing in Benoa. In January Bali as all of Indonesia is in the rainy season. Being later in Bali we learned that torrential rain occurs basically from 18 pm to 10 am. The rest of the time is hot and humid and may drizzle. We had to disembark at 9 am (probably because other passengers would embark later) in the middle of a torrential rain.And something that is clear on the boat for its equipment is when the intense rain ends The ship did not have any protection (upper tarpaulin) on the stairway, they had not foreseen anything on the surface until they reached the port building, etc.etc. We got very wet, so much that I got sick the rest of the trip. Nothing to do with the treatment we had in 2017 at the Azamara Quest where we could see the capital and the officers permanently touring the ship and taking care of even a change of route to make the trip smoother. Nor the other two trips we made earlier in the Quest. When we get off a cruise, in general, we are already thinking about the next one. I do not know if we will do it again in an Azamara. One more point, I wanted to write this in the online survey they sent us (first it is a shame that a company like Azamara use SurveyMonkey program almost free) and also it closed twice and I could not complete it. Something good: the food and those who treated us in El Patio! I hope this serves to improve, especially that a new ship of the line is being launched. Read Less

Title says it all. It is nowhere near as good as a Vikings Ocean Cruise. The ship is old has outdated decor (early Renaissance?) which is dark and dreary. The rugs are almost warn out. On the 7th floor starboard the hallway rug has a severe stain running the complete length of it which looks like there had been a sewage overflow on the cabin side of the rug. The intenet package was impossible to use, using Wi-Fi. I could seldom connect to the internet. When I did connect it would literally take many minutes to download material; uploading material was simply impossible. Internet support was very minimal and often unavailable. Had I paid the $239 for unlited service I would have been very angry. The food was good but not very good. The service was excellent though and very prompt. The same dishes were served almost every day with only a few different side dishes. We did eat in Windows,the buffet restaurant most of the time. The first time we ate in the Discovery restaurant it was so noisy that it was hard to have a conversation. We will not sail with Azamara again. That is sad because we had read so many positive reviews. Read Less

We took our first Azamara cruise in March of 2016 on Quest, on it's last voyage before going into drydock to be refurbished. Because of inconveniences (!!) and the itinerary having been shortened, the company compensated us and also offered incentives for a future cruise. Thanks offer was hard to resist so we chose this itinerary, which fit our schedule. The Journey's overhaul made huge improvements appearance the worn appearance we'd seen on her sister ship. Still, no amount of new carpet and furniture can make stateroom bathrooms larger or add much-needed storage. We found the meals on Journey better overall than we'd had on Quest. However, an alarming incident in Windows buffet at lunch on the second day ruined my appetite for some of the food their for the rest of the cruise. At the carving station a whole turkey had been sliced open, and it was found to be very red, so it was taken away. The server told people another turkey would be out soon, that he had called his manager. But to my horror the new turkey was placed on the carving board before the old board, covered in the red juices from the raw bird, was removed. The server proceeded to carve and serve as if nothing were wrong. I flagged down the dining g room manager and quietly told him what had happened. He was very concerned and left to see about it. I also had a burned burger in The Patio, topped with what I can only describe as artificial cheese. On the other hand there were excellent soups and delicious steaks. Since I'm not that fond of desserts on ships, I enjoyed the excellent fresh fruit plates. We enjoyed the excursions we took from the ship. Coming and going was a pleasure, as the security staff were always pleasant and professional. I'm not quite sure why Azamara ships so often moor in industrial port areas, far from city centers. We're not sure if we'll continue sailing with this company. I know there are Azamara loyalists as there are with all lines, but we're not there- at least, not yet. Read Less

We sailed in September-October on a four week cruise Montreal-New Orleans on the Azamara Quest, under charter by a consortium of Australian travel agents.. As far as I am aware, there was no advertising of this charter on the Azamara website, which was a pity because I am sure many Americans would have appreciated the opportunity to sail down their east coast. The major benefit would have been more rooms sold at full price, instead of the generous last-minute deals, which no doubt necessitated the charter company's cost-cutting. However, if Azamara was prepared to have its brand undermined because of what was clearly a poor relationship between it and the charter company, then that is the product presented to we first-time passengers, and the experience on which I comment. The rooms on the Quest are small and we had to walk sideways between the end of the bed and wall-mounted TV. The upright chair and coffee table were too heavy for regular movement ... but to use one, the other had to be repositioned. The curved sofa was only comfortable for one person to sit; its shape and size did not fit its corner placement, and the best place to watch the TV was from the bed. The designer of these ill-chosen pieces only needed to spend one night to know how unsuitable they are. The bathroom was minute and had no extraction. For a relatively small ship, 700 passengers, I found it impersonal. Middle management was invisible and obviously has no role in engaging with the customer ... except for the marketing people who, in a few ports, invited travel agents into the main guest lounge and spruiked their product. Blinds were lowered, a microphone and AV presentation used. How dismissive of we passengers using the lounge, when two empty restaurants were available to them to conduct business. The cruise director daily produced a long list of activities, most of which were “unhosted”. This was my first cruise where Bridge was not arranged; on ships of only 300 passengers, there can be a hardcore group of 30-40, especially on seas days. In poor or cool weather when the outer decks could not be used, the main dining room and cafeteria were over-crowded and noisy and, over a month, with too few daily changes, the a la carte menus became ordinary. The food was generally okay, but the superior meals were in the two speciality restaurants at an extra $60 a head. Standard alcohol was included, but a number of the wines were not acceptable. To overcome its aging ships, Azamara promotes its Land Discoveries as setting it apart from its competitors. Most of the 20 or so ports and shore excursions on our cruise were tremendous, but attention to detail by the ship’s staff was missing, e.g. presumably to keep down the cost of coaches timeframes were tight, and we were too often moved at a fast pace by guides (who were often half the age of most passengers, but we all kept up); guides unnecessarily cut short some tours; aging coaches; dubious drivers (one who drove with only one fist on the wheel!) who often didn’t know the route; dirty windows which have spoiled photographs. The ship’s New York berth, altered from Manhattan to a remote wharf in New Jersey with a poor shuttle service, was a disaster, and totally spoiled what most would have regarded as the major port of the cruise. Presumably this was cost cutting, and was an absolute disgrace. I have noticed reference in a previous review of Azamara’s “dysfunctional” website, and dirty windows; comments I completely endorse. Ship much older than one would think. Interior tries to intimidate the luxury of by gone days. 1). RECEPTION Check in at port excellent and quick. At reception it stated that the ship was full and no cabins were available to be changed. This was totally untrue. Upon reaching our cabin which was to be shared by two ladies we found it to be extremely small and dark and in no way suitable for a 12 day cruise. We returned to reception and as by magic another cabin materialized which obviously we had to pay for single occupancy then. 2). RESTAURANTS Open seating in main dining room which was comfortable also gave you the opportunity to meet other guests. On first night waiter came to table (when eventually full) to offer red or white wine with no knowledge of what was in the bottle. On only one evening did the waiter know or bother to explain what wine was on offer for that meal. The food was extremely poor and very badly presented. Even the menus looked like they had seen better days. Should one want any vegetables with your meal it was necessary to order these separately. Windows self service cafe gave good choices for breakfast. Nevertheless, while in port one day we had an invasion of flies. No preventative equipment to keep the flies of the food was available and the poor staff were left just using tea towels to try and swat them away. Most unhygienic. 3). DAYS OUT Excursions very expensive and tended to run over time. 4). ENTERTAINMENT Resident entertainment team good but visiting acts where at best third rate. 5). CASINO Was like a morgue with no atmosphere and no encouragement to play. 6). SHOP Well stocked and obviously over priced. 7) SHIP'S NIGHT OUT We we invited to a concert on land which was organized by the entertainment staff of the ship, This was short but enjoyable and involved an hour on a coach to spend 30 minutes at the concert. But well done for trying something different. 8). BAR The inclusive drinks package cocktails had no explanation as to what they actually contained and yet if you were to pay for a specialty cocktail then full details of what it contained were listed. 9). DAILY ACTIVITIES These were very limited unless you wished to go on a organised tour. 10). EXTERIOR AND POOL AREA. Plenty of lovely comfortable sun beds but swimming pool far too small for a swim. Merely ideal for a dip to cool off. 11). GYM Well equipped and open nice and early. Although some keep fit classes where offered early morning these were very limited. 10). TYPE OF GUESTS There were a large number of travel agents on board which in my opinion says they are trying hard to promote this ship. Average age 60 plus. 12). My overall view of this ship is that it does not compete well for the modern cruising needs of guests. Read Less

We have been on over 15 10-14 day cruises on Celebrity and a few on Prncess- the big and mid size ships and enjoyed them immensely. When we met other cruisers on these cruises they as well as our travel agent raved about Azumara. When we found a back to back itinerary we liked 18 months ago we booked the Azamara cruises. Due to the number of cruises on Celebrity we were at a high tier in the Captains Club and our first cruise on the Journey took us to the next level. We flew to Athens a few days early so we would not have jet lag on the cruise. We took a taxi to the port and were greeted by an Azamara rep who got a porter to take our bags and escorted us to the check in area. I was surprised to see coffee and snacks available for people who were checking in. The check in process was quick and we boarded the ship and headed to the 9th fl. for a buffet lunch while waiting to get into our cabin. Ship information After putting our things in the cabin we decided to explore the ship before we had to go to the fire drill. We had heard the ship was small but did not realize how small. One can imagine the Celebrity Constellation common areas cut down by 3/4ths. It is easy to go from the dining areas to the common areas as well as to the pool deck. Even though there are two elevators for and aft we never had to wait long for one to go between decks, The entertainment was in the Caberet lounge which was small and intimate- chairs very unconfortable though. the dining room is nice and seems to be a smaller version of the one on the Constellation. We only had one meal here though. Cabin- we had a club suite which was on deck 8. Above us was the pool deck. The nights of events and after were very noisy early am pm as the crew was setting everything up. the cabin was spacious and the only issues we had which will be corrected during the retrofit is no shower and a small tv. Our butler and attendants were great. Dining-- We are used to the fixed seat dining and could adapt to the open seating system but the menu choices were horrible. As the CC reviewer noted 1 fish, 1 meat and 1 vegetarian entree and some exotic appitizers were the menu choices as well as a small regular menu. the Windows buffet offered some great themed meals so we either ate there or at the specialty restaurant. Since there is no formal night we asked our butler to let us know when the surf and turf would be on the dining room menu. that night we went to the dining room and seated quickly. The waiter came and we ordered the flilet and 1/2 lobster tail. \our food came and we were shocked how SMALL the portions were- the filet the size of a meatball and the 1/2 lobster tail was more like a crayfish. We ate and then went upstairs to have something else to eat as we were still hungry. Looking around the dining room that night we noticed all the waiters had sad/surly/inexpressive faces while walking around and serving- Is this a result of the open seating or the inclusive tip policy? The waitstaff on the Celebrity ships in dining rooms were always smiling and happy and we enjoyed having a fixed waiter and assistant who got to know us and our tastes. Since we ate so much in the two specialty dining rooms the staff got to know us and provided service with a smile. The menu was good and the food tasty. If these two restaurants were not on the ship I would have had to bring in food every day for dinner. The Windows cafe had the theme night dinners and the food was fine and easy to get a table. the only improvement could be to play music to match the theme and some centerpieces ie Spanish night- Spanish music and a Spanish flag on ea. table. Breakfast in the Windows cafe was good- menu geared towards the British passengers as half the ship's guests were British. [same for dining room- menu favored British food}. The brunch was really good and had a wide selection of food. We really enjoyed this meal. White night included a buffet on deck- average food. Activities- limited but enough to keep one occupied. The guest lecturer was very good and gave a lot of talks. Children's program- none - the staff had to rig one up to occupy the many children on the cruise. Service- all tips were included - all the marketing kept touting this fact as well as the waiters will wait on you to bring drinks and water and food ordered at the counter. We only ate once in the main dining room and I commented on service above so I will address the Windows cafe and the 2 specialty dining rooms. All the staff seems to come from the Phillipines and mostly male. Service was hit and miss depending on the maitre de and the waiter. We were in the Cafe and our area was empty and not a waiter in sight on night. I had to go to maitre de to get a waiter. Otther times we had to get up and order drinks at the bar or find a waiter at breakfast to get our coffee. The so called waiter service again is over emphasized as it is not consistent. I resented to prepaying the tips and high fare to get this poor service. Entertainment- Erik the cruise director and the 5 singers and dancers were great!! Bad part was that they did not perform every night. the piano player was very good and the magician terrible. the last nights show is not to be missed but I would night take the cruise to see this show as great as it was. The White night was the only night where there was music by the pool- no entertainment on the pool deck during the cruise. The guitar player was horrible- playing sad blues music during an event which is supposed to be uplifting. A CD would have bee an GReat improvment. The amazing night and white night were fine but again not worth the extra cost of the cruise. Small tv and very few free movies available as well as limited tv stations. Shore excursions- few offered and since we have been to most of the ports we did not go on any. Disembark- Since we were on a back to back we did not disembark but traded our sea pass cards for new ones. NOTE- B 2 B passengers do not need visas and we noted this on our survey form and still charged the visa fees. We had to make many visits and calls to guest relations to get the charges reversed. Very poor performance considering the few passengers and high staff to passenger ratio. Summary- Not worth the extra cost for the all inclusive feature- ie tips and drinks and water. I am used to getting my own coffee and water and food in the buffet on other cruises but resent having to do it on this ship as this is a perk included in the fare. Only a few waiters/waitresses seemed happy to serve and smiling when seen. Most had a sad/resigned/surly look all the time. The ones in the specialty dining were happier as I think they liked having the opportunity to get tips. The dining room menu as well as the food was nothing to write home about. If one wants small portions of British themed food one will enjoy the dining room. I have never seen so much wine poured so freely [no pun intended]- maybe the guests were so gassed they did not have room for food or could taste the food. Read Less

This was our first cruise with Azamara. We wanted the smaller ship experience and have to admit we liked it. We chose this cruise for the itinerary and a special price - double upgrade to a verandah cabin. The ship was nice, clean and fortunately well functioning. (We had heard stories of plumbing problems.) The staff was generally friendly and the food was good. The food and service were excellent in the specialty dining restaurants but you pay extra for that. The promo on this line is that the fare includes gratuities and complimentary alcoholic beverages. There is a catch. You are still overwhelmed with opportunites to tip more and the complimentary drinks includes only 3 selections of beer and they limit the wine to just one white and one red each day. You know they have the larger selection available - so why can't you get a Chardonnay when I don't like Reisling? With a smaller ship you have to expect less choices in some things but you know the wine is there - they are just going to limit you, so they can sell you another glass for $10 each. The upcharges and extra fees are obnoxious. I'll go to a real all inclusive resort next time. We do have to say the Azamara rep at the airport was fantastic. He handled a late luggage issue and sent us on to the ship, while he waited for our luggage on the next flight from Paris. Within 4 hours we had our bags in our stateroom - and that was a HUGE relief. Read Less

There were stains on the carpet. The drawers were not easy to use and the furniture was scuffed. The food was mediocre - very dry chicken on two occasions . Fine dining however was very good. Entertainment. the singers and dancers were excellent and enthusiastic but were limited by the space they had. The band was very good and mainly used for backing music.They should have been used more for dancing. On the one night they did play on deck the event was well attended. Activities were sparse. Lectures on places to visit were good and the commentary going through the canal gave a lot of background information. The captain and crew were excellent and I cannot fault them in any way. THE SHIP NEEDS REFURBISHMENT AND ENTERTAINMENT AND FOOD STANDARDS IMPROVED. Read Less

Three ports in Cuba, three days in Havana. . .all were enticing! Our first cruise on Azamara, a little pricey, but we were determined to make the trip. As others have said, we, too, were led to believe that you needed to participate in the high-priced Azamara excursions every day in order to comply with both U.S. and Cuban rules for U.S. visitors. Not true. Although we did three tours because we wanted to, on other days we sought to comply with the people-to-people commitment on our own. Basically, the Cubans care about what you bring into Cuba, but generally not what you do while there. U.S. government cares what you are doing while in Cuba, but were really lax when we returned with no one even asking what we had to declare. Go figure. A couple of months before the trip, the number of days in Havana was reduced to 2 days--disappointing--but apparently beyond control of Azamara. Same for need to be tendered, not docked, into Santiago de Cuba. Tendering took 20 minutes from ship to dock, and was well handled by the crew. For us, Labadee, Haiti--the private resort owned by Azamara's owner, Royal Caribbean--was wasted on us. Azamara passengers appear to average age 72, and I cannot imagine they took advantage of all the outdoor activities offered--again at high prices--or even just lie on the beach for a full day. There was even a charge for a nature walk around the resort. Really?! Lunch BBQ was great--avoid the food set out in the sun--but saddened by watching the under-nourished and water-denied dogs wandering about. Come on, Royal Caribbean. . .even if these animals are owned by locals, put out food & water, and perhaps have them spayed. Since this ship is the original, but refurbished, R6 (now-defunct Renaissance Cruises), we felt very comfortable having traveled on the R1. The Club Veranda Stateroom was very nice. A few minor negatives: smallish bathroom, poor quality of TV set image, magnifying bathroom mirror was fine if passenger is over 5'7". Large comfortable bed, ample storage space, a zillion hangers in a lighted closet, incredible steward service, free self-service laundry (on level 7). Public areas were comfortable and always clean. Discoveries dining room (main) is large and can be noisy--come early or late to avoid this. Service is wonderful, and the food is good quality. Because of size, however, the occasional buffet there can get a little chaotic. The more casual dining option, Windows Cafe, is always buffet, but better passenger flow. Food is tasty but some items can be more cafeteria-like. Once we saw the additional cost for the two specialty restaurants, we decided to stick with the dining that was included in fare. We're used to not being charged extra on Oceania and Celebrity. Oh, Internet was also extra--not so on Celebrity, Viking, or Oceania. Having been on small cruise ships, we do not expect Broadway shows or big entertainment events. The few singers were very good, although music selections were a little dated. The Azamara Orchestra is really a 4-man band. . .and they were excellent. The 24-year old leader plays piano and delivers witty repartee. The White Nights was much more to our liking with music and dancing from the 70s. Think most of the 600+ passengers turned out for this on-deck activity. There was one enrichment speaker for the whole trip: four presentations in ten days. He knew the material, but his delivery was deadly. I was not the only one who nodded off to sleep while the professor droned on. We will price Azamara voyages in future, but we might find better value for the same trip on Azamara's sister Celebrity ships. Yes, they are larger, but not one of the "Leviathan of the Seas" class ships! Read Less

I have booked another cruise and giving Azamara another chance to improve their wines. Good Australian wines are not at all expensive. Apart from that I enjoyed the cruise with Azamara I like more than one day in ports and chose this cruise for that reason as well as the destinations. Eric de Gray is one one of your best assets. Edina in the restaurants was always so friendly and willing to serve us with a smile. Enjoyed Agnes Lee’s Bridge sessions. Our cabin was serviced to our expectations We could dine whenever we liked and sitting with different people in the Discovery Dining was so good. Our Excursion to Hanoi was a big disappointment. Azamazing evening was very good but too much food was offered at the venue. We had eaten on the ship and didn’t know there would be so much food offered. Great trip with friends sightseeing parts of the world that we hadn't considered before, especially the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. Although a small sample, the various visits gave a good appreciation of Arab culture and Middle East politics. The smaller ship certainly allows for docking without using tenders saving time to visit the wonders of Luxor and Petra, which were incredible. Comparing and contrasting the wonders of the old world(Luxor and Petra) to those of the new world(Dubai) are just one of the reasons to take this cruise. Dining options are varied with upscale Prime and Aqualina restaurants top notch. Crew are well trained and extremely capable and versatile. Entertainment and lectures were very well done especially cruise director Eric de Gray, who not only is an extremely capable director but also an amazing performer. Lecturer John and his passion for the universe drew me to his daily lectures while at sea. Excursions were well organized except for some confusion regarding the hop on hop off bus in Dubai with length(1 day or 2 day), where to embark, outdated maps available on the ship. Otherwise the bus provided a good overview of Dubai. A trip I would definitely recommend. Read Less

We sailed on the Azamara Journey 18 months ago and really enjoyed it so we decided to book this cruise from Athens to Dubai. We arrived after 2:30 pm so embarkation was a breeze. The ship came out of dry dock just prior to our cruise 18 months ago and the refurb is showing it’s age especially in the staterooms. The bathroom shower is wallpapered and starting to peel and the floor of the bathroom is a vinyl tile. This is not what I would expect from an upper Premium cruise line. The menus in the main dining room have meant less choices that our last cruise, especially the lunch menu. Very few choices and a buffet station every day. I find it difficult to understand why one would choose to go to the main dining room at lunch to stand in line for a stir fry or pasta. Some evenings the food was excellent others very poor. We ordered salmon and seared scallops and they were both raw. Considering that we were under a code 3 for norovirus, I would have expected more care to be taken with food preparation. The buffet restaurant was for the most part good, although they now serve frozen strawberries and blackberries for breakfast. This is the first cruise in 30 plus years that I have encountered frozen berries. We really enjoyed the shows, especially anything with Eric. He is fantastic. We particularly enjoyed the Halloween show. It was great! We did not participate in many activities as we had booked a number of Shore excursions and enjoyed the pool on Sea days. Service was excellent everywhere on board. We are having difficulty deciding whether to return to Azamara. We compare to Oceania and think that O may come out ahead. Read Less

Just back from this cruise, having left early for family reasons. We've done multiple Azamara cruises and this was our third on this itinerary, so we obviously love the line and this itinerary. Halong Bay is a justifiably world heritage area; Marble Mountain and Hoi An (from Danang) are wonderful places to visit; Ho Chi Minh City is a unique experience, if only for crossing the roads; and Bangkok always has something new to show us. With the exception of a boat tour of Halong bay, all the other places can be explored privately, aided by taxis, foot and sky train. We cruised Quest in April 16, just after the refit, and now have cruised Journey post re-fit. Several improvements are of note. The Pool Grill is a wonderful night dining addition. The Sunset Bar deck is very popular at night (often difficult to get a seat for a drink or meal) - thanks for listening Azamara. The Living Room (ex Looking Glass) is now a wonderful space, with people gathering together for pre-dinner drinks and chats, with quiet music accompaniment in the background and attentive service staff. Several years ago we enjoyed a cruise in which Eric organised several of the singers to perform solo shows pre-dinner. Didn't happen this time but the cast were on their first cruise. I hope this initiative returns. We did get a Glenn Miller Show from the band one sea afternoon and it was very enjoyable - good band; great drummer. The current DJ, Eddie, is great fun, both in the disco and for various quizzes - he has an effusive personality (other cast members would do well to observe and learn; they unfortunately inject no personality in to the quizzes - I know, they're young and inexperienced but could do better than "the next question is..."). With Eddie and Mario, Azamara have two absolute gems. The food quality, service, ambience were as good as always and we met some delightful, happy people, as we always do on Azamara - it really does have its own atmosphere doesn't it. Not to be overlooked, tenders are easy - no queuing for tickets - just go down when it suits; free shuttle buses of quite short distances - none of this 2 hours from the city in Bangkok and HCM); exceptional docking location in Hong Kong harbour. Although we had to leave the day of White Night, I have no doubt this was again the highlight of the cruise. We didn't do Azamazing to the Ancient City, as we've been twice previously and while it's a very good Azamazing night, we thought we'd pass up the 1hr plus bus trip this time. I'm not suggesting they change it - it really is one of the best Azamazing nights we've attended, given that it is in a delightful setting and gives a good cross-section of Thai cultural activities. However, I was surprised to hear there were no fireworks this time. We stayed on board; were 2 of 4 having dinner in Prime C and were amongst the 7 guests who had a few laughs from "Bridget Jones' Baby" on the pool deck. All in all, a reasonably pleasant but weird night, being aboard with so few people. Now for the areas that IMHO need some improvement. We love Voices and the other production shows. For a small cruise ship they are of excellent standard. From LCV cocktail parties in recent years, it is apparent that the number of returning guests continues to grow. It is well past time to commission Voices 2 and one or more other production shows. Return guests would appreciate a change. We were lucky enough to be offered a LCV upgrade from veranda to suite, which we of course accepted. The shower cubicle is great. However, they've removed the DVD players, leaving suite guests to cope with the measly 2 free movies per day, on a 7 day rotation. Given that there are always very few children aboard and the average age must be somewhere between 55 - 68, I feel just insulted by the deplorable movies they show. It was a succession of movies designed for very young children - e.g. Dory, Jungle Book, BFG, etc. The program was absolutely dominated by these ridiculous movies. I don't have a nanna nap in the afternoon but I often sleep badly on a ship and would appreciate only adult oriented movies. Given the money we pay for an Azamara cruise (which has undoubtedly increased since the re-fit; which no longer includes discounted pre-booked shore excursions; which has also seen 14n cruises scaled back to 13n at a higher cost - yes Azamara, we've all noticed), I would have thought they could at least put on a couple of decent free movies. We attend most of the quizzes/trivia sessions put on. There is far too much repetition. We get new cast members and I don't mind that we break them in but we too often get the same old quizzes. Is it really that difficult to find new quizzes - otherwise the more difficult / obscure questions get swallowed up by those returning guests who have heard the answers so many times they are imprinted to their memory cells. Given our need to leave the cruise early, we found the staff we interacted with very understanding and helpful - still we've always experienced a high level of service on Azamara, so we weren't surprised. For the benefit of future cruisers, we experienced quite a swell for a few days out of Hong Kong, so I think this isn't the best time of the year to cruise this region - maybe look at November if that's feasible. It wasn't too bad but we were in jeans until after we left Danang and to that point had reasonably rolling seas. On the other hand, if you prefer cooler weather, then this is your cruise. We had overnight rain but very little during daytime and none while ashore - just the occasional short shower while aboard Read Less

Had travelled on a smaller ship in the past (Silver Whisper) and enjoyed the experience plus like the idea of all inclusive. Ship boarding was painless and quick. Disembarkation for shore excursions was well organised and painless, as was final disembarkation. Journey had a recent refit so all areas were very nicely presented and we enjoyed the ship. Weather was not so kind to us, which puts a bit of a strain on facilities when going on deck is not an option, but no real hassle and meant we got to talk to more people than we probably would have - seemed a very nice group of people onboard. Shame the White Night and Opera under the Stars had to be cancelled due weather as I am sure they would have been great, but can't blame the ship for bad weather. Considering it is a small ship the entertainment was excellent. The small song and dance group were very good, better than some seen on larger ships. We were lucky enough to have Briona Daugherty onboard, a very versatile singer and her night at the opera was outstanding. Comedian/magician a bit average, but our experience is these acts tend to be a bit hit or miss. Eric the cruise director is also a talented entertainer in his own right and his shows are not to be missed - Azamara is lucky to have permanent staff like Eric. As you would expect, the gym is small and can get a bit crowded at times. The menus in the main restaurant (Discoveries) were spectacular but the food did not always live up to the promise, although generally good. Buffet was good. Prime C and Aqualina were outstanding and would rate as 5+, well worth the supplement. Chef's Table also provided a very nice experience. Overall rating is a balance of the main and supplemental options. Wine and alcohol are included but with upgrade options available. These can be purchased any time during the cruise. Included are 2 white, 2 red, a bubbly and Rose on offer each day and changed on a daily basis. Wines are from all around the world. We were going to upgrade to a wine package but enjoyed the daily wines well enough and didn't bother. Stewards were always happy to let you try the wine before selecting. The crew were great with the majority coming over as genuinely friendly and helpful. Shore excursions were by far the most expensive we have seen (and the basis of our rating) but well run and we enjoyed them - the bicycle tour in Ho Chi Minh is not for the feint hearted! Shuttles were provided at all ports and were convenient. A big advantage is the ability of the ship to dock 'downtown' in places like Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh. Enjoyed the Hanoi tour but be warned the advertised 3.5 hour transit from Halong Bay is more like 4.5, which reduces time in Hanoi, and the drive back was a bit painful. Hanoi itself was great. I think they would be better having an overnight at Danang, which provides access to Hue and Hoi An, and just a day stop in Halong Bay (where the cave is not to be missed), others might disagree. Azamara seem to sit somewhere between the regular cruise lines and those such as Silver Seas. They are are more expensive than the regular cruise lines but you do have inclusive wine and spirits, no additional charges or tips, the staff were great, the ship seems to attract a nice group of people, and in most ports is conveniently located close to the action. If an attractive itinerary comes up we would travel with them again. Read Less

We went on this cruise as we had missed calling in Vietnam on an earlier cruise this year, when we were on the Quest. We loved the refurbishment on the Journey and yes the bathrooms are still small etc but you don't spend a lot of time in the bathroom. Embarkation in Hong Kong was very smooth and quick, after a welcome champagne our stateroom was ready and the luggage arrived promptly. Sailing out of Hong Kong harbour at night was a spectacular sight the nightly laser light show was happening as we sailed. We had all our meals in Discoveries restaurant and thought the food was excellent, portion sizes were great and lots of variety each night, drink service was excellent with a choice of 2 red and 2 white wines each day. A couple of highlights for us was the 'White Night' and the Aazmazing Evening in Bangkok, for the Aazmazing evening were bussed from the ship to a beautiful setting in the ancient city. One thing we really like is Azamara's attention to hygiene, each entry to any dining area is staffed at the hand hygiene station and you have to sanitise. Another nice touch is that when you return to the ship, every staff member you meet will give you a warm "welcome home" and it does feel like coming home. All in all a great cruise. Read Less

Embarkation was speedy but there was no food available and we had missed lunch. The patio area was not open at about 3.30 pm when we boarded despite indicating it was in "Pursuits" Crew were helpful and accommodating. Service with a smile. Dinner in the dining room was very good in terms of quality and choice. Breakfast and Lunch in Windows cafe was a little repetitive and no sushi offering at lunch. We did not eat in Windows nor use the other 2 restaurants (Aqua and Prime)any evening.. Ports were interesting Entertainment was poor. We don't go to shows preferring music while we have a pre or post dinner drink or coffee. Guitarist and piano player were both poor and repetitive.. Can't comment on the shows as we don't do shows. Wifi is expensive and poor. Azamara need to address this as it could be a deal breaker for us TV entertainment is extremely poor. We were on-board for 17 days and films from 1st week were repeated on the second week. Some cruisers spend time in their cabin and like to relax and watch a film, not so on this ship. Offering was really poor unless you wanted to pay for a film. Some passengers don't want fancy shows but prefer quieter entertainment. Communication in "Pursuits" needs to be a bit more forward thinking e.g. "no bus into port a Salalah" needed to be communicated well ahead of the night before we docked. This resulted in a rush to book a tour for those that wanted to go ashore after 4 nights at sea. Read Less

We chose this cruise line because we had sailed with it the year before and had enjoyed it so much. We like the smaller size ship with fewer passengers thereby giving it a more intimate feel. Also gratuities and complimentary drinks are included so your know where you are so to speak when you commence the cruise. However, the standard of the complimentary wine list for 2016 was not as good as last year. As an example of this, there were no Australian or New Zealand wines available on any day and many Californian ones. The crew from the Captain downwards were marvellous and we could not fault them - welcoming, friendly and attentive. We feel that this cruise line suits people who want a quieter time enjoying talking and mixing with each rather than attending big variety shows - they did have evening entertainment but not on a large scale. The itinerary of this cruise is quite demanding as 4 of the 10 days involved very early starts and late evenings. The food in all restaurants was good but the MDR could supply more vegetables with dishes rather than having to ask for them every time. Read Less
