I chose this cruise based on a recommendation of a family member and the size of the cabin. I was not disappointed. The staff was so friendly. We had a minor accident that needed a doctor and the Cruise Director went with us to each appointment to translate for us. He even adjusted tours to accommodate our appointments. The excursions were so well planned, something for everyone. I, myself, was a "Gentle Walker" and was still able to see most of the sights. We met people from all over the world and had fun getting to know them. The small number of passengers was a great change from the large cruise ships and their thousands. It was really quaint - like family at the end. The food was excellent and the variety and availability was great. I would highly recommend Avalon and look forward to taking another cruise with them in the future... Read Less

We had taken a Danube Avalon cruise in July of 2016 with Avalon. Enjoyed it so much we decided to do the Rhine in 2017. In 2016 the ship only had approximately 80 passengers on board with crew. This summer the ship was completely full. Just with difference of 35-40 people you could tell the difference in the service level at dinnertime, Both cruises had wonderful, attentive and informative cruise directors. Each director had very different personalities, but catered to our every whim! Very knowledgeable with very good sense of humor! The crew did a wonderful job as well. Each one was very friendly and accomodating. The food was very good, as well as the bar service. We paid for optional tours on each cruise and they only added to our wonderful experience. The local guides do a wonderful job and take good care to watch over everyone. The earpieces are such a good idea! I did like the new addition this summer of having a "slow walking tour" option for those that needed it. I think that was very helpful for alot of passengers. Read Less

No one can predict water levels or heat when they are booking a river cruise. Given that, the cruise staff pulled off our trip and eked thru with the boat touching bottom at one point. We did miss one port so that the Captain could pass the most challenging point in the river before the water dropped below a manageable level. We thought he did a superb job. We went thru 62 locks, which lost its appeal after 2. Food -- as many others have commented, the food for the most part is just mediocre. Breakfast and lunch are buffets with very repetitive foods, but the omelet/egg station is notable. Only four cereal choices, one chocolate which eliminates it for most adults. They did have choices of yogurt. Dinners were okay, and the bistro meal was filing but a disappointment. Would have prefered to eat on shore more, but time limited. Rooms -- the best bed I have ever slept in. I asked the staff for the brand and they handed me the info on the web site as we disembarked -- in German. Oh Well. The sliding glass door was wonderful and we enjoyed sitting on the bed reading or watching Europe go by on the few daytime cruises. You mostly cruise at night. Unfortunately you also often dock against another boat which required keeping the curtains closed. It did not happen enough to detract from the good views. The bathroom was much larger than expected and very workable. Lots of hot water. Touring -- The heat made many tour days uncomfortable. Also the schedule was much busier than expected. Not what I would call a leisurely cruise floating down a river. We probably will not do another one any time soon. Read Less
