Shall I start with the positive or the negative of my experience? Three Boats, never saw the one I was supposed to be on. Three weeks before departure I started tracking the Viking Mimir the boat I was supposed to be on, and noticed that it was not moving in the direction it needed to be to board. I started asking my Travel Agent to get into contact with Viking to find out if there were going to be changes to our trip and if there were going to be issues with Water Levels or anything else. After saving money for THREE YEARS to go on a once in a lifetime trip and as I am an anxious traveler and I have high levels of anxiety. I kept getting the typical PR Responses that all would be fine. Needless to say we got on our Plane to Amsterdam on November the 10th. NOVEMBER 11 2015 at 12:22 in the Afternoon Mountain Standard Time WE GET AN EMAIL ASKING US IF WE WANTED TO CANCEL OUR TRIP AFTER ALREADY ARRIVING IN AMSTERDAM! Too Late now we are already in another country where we have no way to call and talk to anyone. We had already been gone for over 18 hours. Way to go Viking you really excelled at communication there. This is why I called every day and bugged my Travel Agent every day for a week before we left. Day 2 in Extended stay in Amsterdam, we joined the walking tour it was nice and informative. I talked with the Viking Representatives at the Hotel and found out that people who had arrived were canceling and returning home just as angry as I was. I heard others talking about how they got on-board ship credit for use on this cruise for the inconvenience. I promptly sent an email to my Travel Agent and Demanded that she call Viking and get the same for me I felt I was owed that much at least for lack of communication from Viking before I left the country. I eventually did get this on-board ship credit and it did soften the blow. Others got the Silver Drink Package for no Charge, Others got $200 each traveler on-board ship credit, some got 25% off vouchers. I got late communication and 15% off. NOT including my airfare. Yeah I was mad, livid is more like it. Day 3. I had booked an outside tour of the Jewish Museums, and Anne Frank house. Before I booked this alternate tour I called Viking directly and asked when I needed to be on board the ship. I was told as long as we made it back to the ship before 11:30 Departure we would be ok to tour Amsterdam. (NOT TRUE) The Viking Representatives at the Hotel told me I had to be on board for a 6:45 Daily Briefing and that it was Mandatory. Well my tour was not over till 8:00 that night. So I missed this Mandatory Briefing. Again another communication breakdown from the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing. We boarded the Viking Eistla on Friday the 13th. All was well. I got to know the staff. There are several Staff members that I would like to pay tribute too. Vana our room Matron on the Eistla and Baldur. Vana went the extra mile to make our stay special. She had a wonderful energy and was always so nice to see. She gives great hugs and she made the trip positive for me. With the special little room gestures from one ship to another. She remembered the Extra Blanket that was needed and had it ready on the next boat so I did not have to ask for it again. I hope that I get to see her again on a future cruise. The Maitre'd Aryan (I think I am spelling his name right) has made every day on the ship memorable, Kurt and Lucas at the Front Desk, Vanya and Mary and Marlon in the Dining Room, Kristyan at the Bar, Ohna at the Bar were all excellent in their jobs and I enjoyed interacting with all of them. Monday the 16th we were switching ships. I appreciate all the hard work the staff did to help us switch ships. I am thankful that Viking booked a Scenic Cruise from Braubach to Bingen so we would not miss the beauty and splendor of the Rhine. I am grateful that we were able to do this instead of being bused. So I give Viking Cruise Director Rob a big thumbs up for coordinating this for us. We arrived the Baldur and everything was seamless and very nice. It was a lot better than I expected. This ship was exactly like the Eistla and so I did not notice any difference. Sunday November 22nd Switching Ships Again. Sadly I had to say Goodbye to Vana our Room Matron who again I must say was the most positive and wonderful staff members I have ever come across. Time to go to the Viking Embla. After a long day out and about we got to our room. As I was unpacking I noticed a constant humming coming from the bathroom. It was non stop and very annoying. This ship is showing signs of wear and tear. While I was unpacking my suitcase I pulled out the beside table to put down a glass of water. Instead in Stateroom 225 the bedside table pulled out and fell off right on my foot. I have a lovely bruise that is fading but it was painful. The closet door in the room would not stay shut and it would open and close on its own at all hours of the night. The temperature in the Shower was not consistent. Anytime someone flushed a toilet the water would turn scalding hot and I actually got a burn on my chest from the water and a blister from the water in the Shower. The Embla did not have the same amenities that we had in the other two ships. (No USB Port and Outlets were fewer) No under light in the bathroom and no lights in the closet that worked. Needless to say it was a disappointment from the other two ships. And that constant humming noise and closet doors opening on their own, this room was a little bit annoying to say the least. (FIX THOSE THINGS FOR FUTURE TRAVELERS) Now that we are home and going over the memories we are very pleased with the experience for the most part. However finding that others we cruised with got more than 15% off for a future cruise, some are getting 25-30% off. Considering it took us THREE Years to save for this cruise we would like to give Viking another try but we are taken back that we have to use this voucher in less than a year. So I would like something done about that. Considering I did not get 100% of what I paid for I expect some form of compensation that is not a complete and total slap in the face especially since I repeatedly asked for information before I left, and I would have canceled and re-booked for a later date when Water Levels were better. But the experience even though several ports were cut short due to water levels and some of our free time was taken away it was a good trip. Read Less

This was my first river cruise but it won't be my last. I had taken several ocean cruises and did not know what to expect on a river cruise. It was much better than any previous cruise. The crew of the Embla was wonderful from Maya who cleaned our room to Leonard , the program director, your wait staff and the Maitre D. There was not one negative thing about this experience. I traveled with my granddaughter on her first trip to Europe and she, too, was thrilled. The shore excursions were excellent with very knowledgeable guides in every port at which we stopped. The food was excellent as was the on board entertainment. Everyone on the crew with whom we came in contact made us feel welcome. The dining system of six to a table and changing tables with every meal or staying with one group was a wonderful idea and we made many new friends as a result of this. We are looking forward to taking another Viking cruise. Right now I have my eye set on the ocean cruise of the Scandinavian countries, Estonia, Poland, Germany and Russia, while she is hoping for something that includes Paris. Read Less

Although we have been on a number of ocean cruises, this was our first river cruise. It will not be our last. We had heard nothing but rave reviews about Viking and the river cruise experience. This cruise surpassed our expectations. From the time we walked out of customs at Amsterdam's airport until the time we checked in for our flight home, there was always a Viking representative there to take care of us. We never felt alone in a foreign country. The ship's accommodations and meals exceeded our hopes. The dinning and hotel staffs were pleasant and did everything possible to ensure the trip was enjoyable. The food was excellent and the portions were just right. The idea of changing tables every meal and meeting different people was great. No matter who we dined with, our wait staff of Jaycee, Josh, and Gilbert were always there to provide great service. The shore excursions were varied to the point of having something for everyone. The concierge was exceptional. He was able to arrange a private side trip from Cologne to Margraten, NL for us. The driver he arranged for us was friendly and knowledgeable. Leonard, the program director, was also very good. He had great commentary about the local scenes as we cruised the river. The man is full of energy and he spread it among the passengers. We are looking forward to more Viking cruises. Read Less

We had been watching the Viking River cruise promotions on TV for months, with a mix of fantasy, disbelief and thought this was too good to be true. Seeing is believing! So we, impulsively booked a cabin with a verandah. To our amazement, our experience on Viking Embla, surpassed our wildest expectations and we are ready to sing their praises, out loud. This was our first river cruise, from Amsterdam to Budapest; and it left us with a longing for another one, sooner than later. The ship was beautiful, comfortable, clean and had space for everyone to enjoy the view. The library and computer terminals were a great feature. The exceptional staff and crew were professional, very helpful and always cheerful. The tour director Leonard had the perfect charisma to lead us on this great adventure down the Rhine and Danube. He was knowledgeable and humourous, with a great DJ's voice that accompanied a bubbly and enthusiastic personality. He gave us interesting commentaries and shared unique legends, as we sailed along the ever-changing landscapes. 15 minutes before dinner, we were invited to the lounge to attend a briefing and power point presentation of the next day's itinerary. This helped to refresh our minds and prepare the way for tomorrow. Many levels of included and optional tours were offered, to accommodate most needs. Each evening after dinner, there would be entertainment in the lounge. Often, we would participate in an intriguing presentation of the art, music, culture or cuisine of the town that we were going to experience the following day. After which, we could relax in the lounge listening to the charming on-board pianist, or go back to the cabin and watch a movie or listen to a wide selection of music. While we were at dinner, a detailed printed itinerary for the next day would be left in our room. The whole tour was well organized and efficiently handled. Even though we hit some hurdles with the water level being too low, during the heat wave, the captain worked creatively with the staff and managed to give us a complete river cruise, whereas other ships had to coach their passengers from port to port. The food on board was varied, well-presented and relevant to the country in which we were docked. This gave us an opportunity to taste local delicacies, both in town and on the ship. The wait staff were impeccable and in a few days learnt the passengers likes and preferences giving one the feeling of personalized service. With no fixed sitting for meals, we were encouraged to reach out to new friends each day. Special onboard activities included games, glass blowing, coffee and strudel preparation, local musicians and dancers entertained us as well. It was such fun. The shore tours were much anticipated with local guides using "quiet boxes" to add extra flavour. Travel to embarkation and disembarkation points was flawless. Throughout our stay on Embla, we were made to feel "at home". I highly recommend adding a Viking River cruise to your bucket list. You will not be disappointed. In fact you will be fulfilled. This was our first cruise on Viking River Cruises. We went from Bucharest to Budapest which is the direction I would recommend for anyone that hasn't been in Eastern Europe before. Our prior cruises have all been ocean cruises and we loved the more intimate feel and personal attention of the river cruise. I believe that Viking does an exceptional job in this regard. We opted to extend our stay an additional 20 days which Viking allowed us to do. We arranged our own transportation form Budapest, Hungary (the end of our tour) to Bonn, Germany. Viking made our flight arrangements from Germany back to the USA for us. This allowed us to stay with friends in Germany for that additional time. We enjoyed our river cruise so much that we will probably forgo ocean cruises for now. We enjoyed the smaller number of people and the personal attention that we received. When we departed Budapest, Hungary on our own to Germany, the Viking staff were very helpful even though their responsibilities to us had ended. The shore excursions were great. We are usually interested in learning about the countries and people we visit and these were very informational and well done. Not to mention the opportunities to interact with people. I think the most extraordinary thing about visiting this part of the world earlier this year was that the immigration problems that Europe and especially Hungary began facing several months later were so much clearer to us. We felt that we have a greater understanding of the situation and problems. It turned into an incredible eyeopener for us. This was a unique trip at a unique time. We enjoyed the great service and personable staff. Read Less

This was our first cruise on Viking. From the first night (when Program Director Leonard loaned us fleece pullovers to watch departure from Amsterdam), through snow in Rothenberg and our bike ride from Melk to Krems (Concierge Michal suggested and helped us coordinate), to the last night in the hotel in Bucharest, this is the best cruise we have ever taken. We participated in everything that our energy level allowed, because it was all so much fun! We like the smaller ships rather than the huge ocean going liners we have experienced in the past. After just a few days, we had met many of the other passengers and felt like longtime friends of the staff. We were thrilled to wave from the ship with Katja, our Hotel Manager, as we passed her husband on the shore waving to us from their home town. Food and dining room service was extraordinary. We made it a point to dine with our favorite dining room waiters, Gabor and Oggy. We liked that the wine came from the regions we visited. The food menus were varied and met our needs and preferences. The open seating dining encouraged us to meet new people at every meal. Our stateroom was on the main deck—large porthole, no balcony or French balcony. We loved it. Swans came up to our porthole and looked inside. Plenty of space for everything. The included tours normally had two options—walk more or walk less and more slowly. We were happy with the guides, who all spoke excellent English and provided a wealth of history and current events about the locale and country. Program Director Leonard’s daily briefings, occasional history lessons, and narrative through the Iron Gate were exceptional. We were amazed that Viking could make major itinerary changes. Because of a marathon in Vienna we headed to Bratislava that Sunday and Viking bused us back to Vienna for the concert on Sunday night. We had paid extra for the optional concert, but Viking comp’d everyone wishing to attend. We were highly impressed by the energy level of the entire staff. They were up before we were, working all day, and in bed after we were. And they all maintained their smiles and took such good care of us. Read Less

We have been on a number of European bus tours and enjoyed each one to the fullest. But this river cruise was more relaxing while still providing the sights and a wonderful variety of excursions that we enjoy. The nightly pre-dinner routine was calming and gave a sence of home and stability to the trip. On board entertainment was excellent in variety and quality, as well. Our program director, Leonard, was fantastic for this job. He was a rock! Patient, funny, smart, reliable and fun to be around. The food was fabulous! Well prepared and beautifully presented. Plentiful in amount and variety. The staff was warm, friendly, courteous in the highest degree. We loved each one! We cannot say one negative thing about this trip. We enjoyed it thoroughly. From the moment we were met at the airport and driven to the ship and welcomed onboard by such friendly staff, my two wonderful weeks had begun. The service was amazing, the dining room staff so friendly and humorous. We took all the off shore excursions, learned so much history about each community. The entertainment on board was excellent with different people from each community. Vienna was spectacular. We chose our own concert, took the subway to St Charles Church to see Mozart's Requiem, it was a beautiful night and the concert was spectacular. I really don't know what I can say about what I enjoyed the most as every day was a new place and experience. I enjoyed it all. Our tour director Leonard was informative, very friendly and a great sense of humour. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating. I felt pampered for two weeks. I loved being on the rivers. All the guides were excellent and very informative. Read Less
