American's have not really discovered this Austrailian based cruise company, but we were lucky to find this river cruise while searching for last minute deals on line. We are experienced cruisers and thought why not try something different. We ended up having the experience of a lifetime and enjoyed all the benefits of a first class all-inclusive cruise. Yes, we were in the minority (we were only two of 14 Americans on board, versus about 75 Austrailians and 60 Canadians) but that proved to be an advantage. It was nice to escape the political noise in our country and get some other perspectives from those outside the daily fray. We ended up sailing on a 15 day itinerary from Budapest, Hungary to Amsterdam and were given first class treatment all the way. Even though we elected to arrive in Budapest several days before embarkation without buying Scenic's pre-departure package - they still picked us up at the Airport and drove us to our chosen hotel for no extra charge. Very few cruise lines do that for you. Our embarkation in Budapest was seamless and Scenic had the premier docking position in Budapest so we could enjoy beautiful nighttime views of the Hungarian Parliament building and several beautiful bridges our first night on the river boat. Disembarkation was also a snap and Scenic even had someone meet us at the Amsterdam airport to guide us to our airline's check-in area. So nice. Food and drinks flowed freely on board with no restrictions whatsoever. We had specialty coffees and drinks at our disposal night and day and a fully stockied mini-bar that was replenished immediately. The wine selections for dinner and lunch were truly memorable and designed to complement the deliciously prepared meals. I was very impressed by the freshness of the fruit, vegetables and salads - not always the case on many cruises. The included excursions and enrichment activities were first class and I feel they had the connections to get us into some of the best places to visit. For example, our private concert at Palais Lichtenstein in Vienna was just beautiful. Another highlight was attending a performance at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna as well as an evening tour and dinner at Marksburg Castle in the beautiful Rhine Gorge. E-bikes were available for each port and we totally enjoyed touring various cities using them. We often saw Viking Ships docking at the same ports and doing some of the same tours, but I often felt sorry for them as we seemed to have the preferred times and better guides. I don't know how Scenic does it - but they do. My only caveat would be in regard to cabins. Because we did a last minute lower-priced booking, we were only able to book one of the smallest cabins with no balcony. Although the room was very clean and well appointed, for such a lengthy cruise, we wished we had been in one of the larger balcony suites. I wouldn't have minded the small cabin for a five to seven day cruise, but after 15 days I was tired of our small shower and the minimal room in our cabin. But that was a choice we made and of course we saved over $3,000 a person in the process. Just be warned - small cabins are small!!! One final point - our on-board tour director was fabulous. Very organized, clear and well versed about all our destinations. I know that my husband will never sail any other way than all inclusive going forward and we would definitely choose Scenic for our next cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise at the last minute and did not really know what to expect. After a long flight we embarked the ship in Amsterdam with a minimum of fuss and found what should have been a hectic experience very smooth and welcoming. The staff aboard “The Pearl” were nothing short of fantastic and really made our cruise the experience of a lifetime. The cabin is small but very comfortable and the onboard amenities plentiful. We really enjoyed the the small ship experience especially the all inclusiveness. Our every need was catered for. The itinerary was extensive and we found that the experiences included of the highest quality. The food was of a high standard and plentiful, we wanted for nothing In that regard. The staff really were exceptional on our cruise and my praise really doesn’t do justice to their hard work and motivation. I can recommend Scenic enough for introducing us to the wonders of Europe. We have friends who told us the river cruises were a great way to see an area. So we decided Europe. Our travel agent recommended Scenic as a choice for an all inclusive trip for the price. From the time Scenic picked us up in Amsterdam to the time they shuttled us to the airport in Budapest everything was first class. In fact they even let us upgrade our airline tickets to business class (highly recommended for international travel) for a very reasonable fee. The trip was so well organized all the stress was removed which travel often brings. The service was exemplary. Food excellent at every venue. Cabin was spacious with all the comforts. Our cruise director, Richard, worked tirelessly to insure all aspects of our tours and free time went smoothly. Never a dull moment but somehow with time to just relax and "vacation". This was my first introduction to Europe and Scenic did it well. I told our "new friends" we met on the cruise, I have never been so far from home but never felt so much at home. Still trying to process all we've seen and experienced. I will definitely recommend Scenic. Thank you Scenic for a memorable trip of a lifetime. Read Less

Wanted to visit Amsterdam and Germany and it was the perfect way to do it. We chose the Scenic Ruby as the ship and decor was very modern. We had the room at the rear of the ship. The rear window was wide that we didn’t have to leave our room to see the beautiful river scenery especially the castles. The food and service was five star, all our needs were met by our wonderful butler with early morning coffee and breakfast in our room. There was a also a full buffet breakfast in the dining room with a great selection of cold and hot food. Evening meals were five star. The daily soups are to die for. As you cruise through the towns and past the vineyards you get to try the lovely wines and beers in that area with you meals. It seemed happy hour all day. The bar staff would were very attentive and ready to mix your favourite cocktails. The musical entertainment on board was excellent. There was a good selection of shore excursions. Our Cruise Director was informative advising us of the next days’ tours and departure times. Comfortable coaches and guides were ready each day to take us on our guided tours. This was certainly a five star cruise. Read Less

We were celebrating our honeymoon, the moment we set foot on the ship, we were transported into a world of utter luxury. We were doted upon and treated like royalty. George, the cruise manager, always greeted everyone with a friendly smile and answered all our questions. I am sure he would have also been quick to solve any issues but there were none. He was on top of everything. Everything was done effortlessly, or so it seemed, from my perspective. The staff was friendly, upbeat and Costi our restaurant server made me laugh, a discreet comedian, suggested food and drink, made me a toddy in the evening. He was a true delight. Vlad our attentive and intuitive butler knew or seemed to know what we wanted before we even expressed our thoughts. We was extremely professional and incredibly helpful. The food was stupendous! The chef came around and wanted our feedback. No wonder! The baked goods are to die for. The lamb, wow. The soups yummy. We loved everything about our trip! What a grand adventure. Sylvia the tour organizers took very good care of us. She took great pains to explain and plan the wonderful outings we enjoyed. Our suite was wonderful, ours was the Royal Panorama. It was spacious, kept spotless and generously supplied with anything one could possibly need. Our laundry was taken care of and returned promptly. The salt room felt wonderful after our massage. I could go on, but will stop here before I write a book. I am still suffering from Vlad ( our butler) withdrawal. If you enjoy a phenomenal adventure and want to feel coddled in luxury, then sign up. You will love it! Guaranteed. Read Less

We chose Scenic in part due to the all inclusive price, no tipping, no added fees. We also received a recommendation from our travel agent. We arrived in Amsterdam 1 day early, primarily to help with jet lag. In hind site it would have been better to have come 2 days early to enjoy Amsterdam more before the cruise started. Embarkation was much easier than initially described. We were told that we would be boarding at 15:00, however we were able to board the ship at 12:30 and enjoy the lounge while rooms were readied and to start to get a feel for the ship. Disembarkation in Budapest was equally smooth and relaxed. From the very first interaction the care and training of the staff was obvious, everyone was friendly and helpful. The ship (Jade) appeared to be recently refurbished and everything was in top condition. The cabin was well laid out and easy to use. The dining experience was excellent, breakfast and lunch were primarily buffet, however a menu was available if a passenger wanted a meal with more than buffet preparation. The dinners were we very delicious and well presented. The entertainment (a quartet, a zither musician, a waltz couple and lessons and Hungarian dancing) were timed with the ports and shore excursions and provided a inspiration during time in the lounge. The service on the ship, at all levels was top flight and everyone was both friendly and helpful. The shorE excursions were also first class with lots of information and pace geared to various levels of needs. In addition the medieval dinner, sound of music show and the concert left us with very happy memories. We did face a ship shift, that is we started on the Jade but at Nuremberg we had a bus ride to change to the Jewel. We had been cautioned that this happens. On the positive side it went like clockwork. We were told what we needed when we needed it. For example we were 1.5 days ahead that this was coming, then the next evening we needed to pack then on the day of the shift, we did our normal shore tours and then after lunch boarded the buses and were in our new cabin in time for supper. For the most part the ships were identical. The jewel had not been updated and the lounge furniture was older and the shower faucet was older but worked well. The only problem was with the WIFI. On the Jade we had great service in our cabin, however on the Jewel we had no service in our cabin. Passengers on one side of us had service while the passengers on the other side of us did not have service. Despite asking reception for help (and they in turn asking engineering to look into the matter), there appeared to be nothing to be done about this, We did not have any children on the trip with us and we are both quite mobile. Would we go again, definitely. In fact we are already dreaming of future trips with Scenic. Read Less

The food was always fresh, beautifully presented and a wonderful variety at all meal times. I would strongly recommend it. The facilities & food are brilliant. Most of the tours were enjoyable and gave us a good glimpse of important attractions and local cultures. Nikola our cruise director was very professional and enthusiastic and always ensured all passengers were well informed of upcoming events, times and places to meet which resulted in smooth transition from ship to tour & back to the ship again... The water levels in the rivers were apparently problematic, but the captain & crew moved the ship along when needed to make sure we could get through ok which we are very thankful for. This cruise really was value for money and definitely will look at travelling with Scenic again in the future. Read Less

Our first Crystal River Cruise aboard the Mahler one of their five river ships gave us many special moments to remember. We just completed the sojourn from Amsterdam to Budapest itinerary. We are savvy cruisers having experienced many ocean itineraries aboard vessels of differing sizes. Instead of detailing the ship itself which was 2 years old, I will tell you the design team knows and understands the elements of how to make the cabins comfortably luxurious and the common areas beautiful letting the natural light and colors blend harmoniously with the water and sky. The cabin size was more then adequate. The bed and bedding, choice of various pillow types covered the bases. The dining with attention to detail, creativity, menu selections were of exceptional quality time after time. Each dinner was a favorite until the next dinner. The meat cooked to the perfection it deserved. The lobster and shellfish, caviar were of excellent quality Vegans, Gluten free, and vegetarians can all expect to be happy. Food allergies are immediately noted and special meals can be created to suit you with a personal discussion of your desires. Shore excursions were well managed with smaller groups organized from the larger group. Mahler has just 106 paying guests with its own new spacious road buses. Never a problem getting on or off. Staff at the ready for any assistance before you went ashore and there to greet you upon your return. For many it was their first Crystal experience and the comments were all positive day after day with guests sharing their own “I cannot believe this person did this for me or that for me.” I loved hearing their stories because I already knew what was in store when we booked, a trip well worth the price paid. The inclusive Crystal pricing is the way to go if you have never done so before. All speakers and entertainment were top notch. Crystal has lifetime customers and we are definitely part of this group. Love this company. Read Less

The gourmet food was delicious, plentiful and well presented. The excursions and enrichment activities were very well organized and we also enjoyed the free time to explore on our own. Some of the highlights for us: The beautiful scenery, Amsterdam from the canals, Melk Abbey, Nuremberg, Saltzburg with some Sound of Music sights, the wonders of Vienna and the beautiful Opera performed just for us, ancient villages, castles and ruins and the surprise Budapest light show on our very last evening was truly spectacular. We can’t rave enough about this cruise...it really was a dream vacation. Read Less

We had friends recommend this Scenic Cruise after their experience on board last year. They were so right, it was a wonderful experience. We had never been on a river cruise, being very independent travelers, but Scenic was a perfect fit for us. You could choose any of the offered excursions, or adventure on your own using their e-bikes. Every excursion left exactly at the time stated, and returned to the boat at the precise time scheduled. The local guides were knowledgeable and added much local flavor to the tours. We can not compliment the ship's staff enough! They worked together beautifully, always with smiles, truly wanting to make the trip memorable for you. The cabins were very well appointed, perfectly designed to maximize the space, with quality amenities. The meals were delicious with many choices, and beautifully served. Be sure not to miss the sorbet dessert! I think the camaraderie of the crew carried through to the guests. Everyone was so congenial and welcoming to each other. Conversation flowed easily amongst the passengers who were mainly Canadians, Brits, Aussies and Kiwis, with a few Americans as well. The shore excursions were excellent, onboard entertainment was very good, and a highlight was the evening a Palace was opened for the guests to explore and then attend a private concert! We arrived home and began looking at the Scenic catalog for another trip! Read Less

A year ago we'd never heard of Scenic and were comparing many cruise offerings for May of 2019. Fortunately my travel advisor suggested considering Scenic along with many other cruise companies I was comparing. Hands down, this cruise never disappointed and was superb! We had invited first-time river cruiser friends to join us (with some trepidation as we'd never been on a Scenic cruise). They were quite impressed as were we. Compared to our previous two river cruises, Scenic was an exceptional experience! Our stateroom was beautiful with spaciously creative designs. Personnel were friendly and professional. All excursions were well thought out and very enjoyable. Food was very good - not gourmet, but regionally representative, delicious and beautifully presented. Being an all-inclusive river cruise took most of the guest work out of this trip. The weather was spectacular and I truly cannot believe any Rhine River cruise could have delivered more than the sights and experiences we had. Next year we'd like to enjoy a Seine River/Normandy cruise and with what we now know Scenic will be our go-to company for river cruises from this time forward! Read Less

This was our second Scenic cruise "Girls Trip". We chose this particular route to see some of the highlights of the Netherlands and Germany. The itinerary was excellent and our choices of the tours each day was plentiful. We each chose according to our own interests and often ended up on different day tours. Having done a Scenic tour two years ago, we knew we could expect top notch accommodations, food and service. We love the attention to detail that Scenic has for each of its guests. We enjoyed the small pool on the sundeck as well as the saltroom and I loved the ebikes - I did both the ebike tour offered and again used an bike on free time one afternoon. Our meals were always delicious and so well presented. There were many options for dining if you opted not to have the choices offered each evening. The staff were the best! We always had the feeling that Scenic treats their employees very well as the staff from the maids to the butlers and servers as well as the nautical team all seemed very happy in their positions and eager to help guests in any way. Everything on this cruise was well organised especially free choice excursions. Nothing seemed to trouble the staff and they were excellent and helpful. The dining facilities and food were excellent and if anyone went hungry well that was their fault. The butler service was excellent as well, all staff made our first cruise that much more enjoyable. The only downside I would say was the dress standards. The A-Z booklet in the cabin recommended that no shorts were to be worn in the dining room and it was preferable for men to wear jackets to dinner. Very few of the guests took notice of this. Some even wore baseball caps in the lounge and dinning area, which to me is not the place for these items. Read Less

Wanted to cruise from Budapest to Neuremberg on the Danube. We spent more time on a coach than on the river. In fact we only 'cruised' for 4/5 hours in daylight during the whole 7 days. Please check carefully water levels before you book. We were not advised of any problems until less than 24 hours before departure. We would have expected to be contacted and offered the possibility of cancellation due to the circumstances. Fortunately for us the weather was great and we were able to make good use of the electric bicycles that were available. This enabled us to see some of the countryside along the river. Shuttle bus services were put on which we used to visit local towns. Instead of sitting on a coach for up to 3/4 hours. Remember if you book a balcony suite you could be docked for hours/dayd looking into someone else's balcony on another cruise boat. Talking to other passengers who had cruised with National Geographic before, this partnership left a lot to be desired. Their representatives were very pleasant though. Be very wary if you have an intolerance or allergy to certain foods. My experience was difficult to say the least. Read Less

This was our first trip on Scenic and we were pleasantly surprised. We were on the Diamond Deck in a Balcony Room. It was very nice and small but manageable. The balcony was a plus. Our room service was excellent. We did get a butler who was wonderful and very personable but he seemed to have other duties which kept him busy. We did get the "special dinner" which was excellent and fun to try different wines and food. It was part of the dining room but in the back. The food was good. My favorite was the German lunch!! The excursions were fine but wish we had more time in some cities. They do give you a GPS device. Now, let me tell you these when they work they are great. We only had one in our room, so we had to ask for another one which did not charge. Then we had to get another one as the sound did not work. We suggested that maybe it would a good idea to give the tour guides extra ones but I think these could be expensive. Now the river ... it was low. The lowest in years. The captain was awesome and I was amazed that we got as far as we did. Also, he was there to greet us on and off the ship at every port. Very friendly and helpful. As I stated the river was low and we did make it to Worms. We were not able to go to the castle for our concert, so they brought it to us. We couldn't make it to our last two stops but they did bus us to Strasbourg and provided lunch. We were able to see the town but being Sunday many places were closed. We were then bused to Zurich where we stayed at a lovely Marriott, They provided us with a lovely dinner with wine and beer. The next day, we had breakfast and transported to the airport. All provided by Scenic. We did not make it to Basel. Our social director, Sylvia really did a fantastic job. I wasn't sure about her first because she was like other social directors that I have had on other ships but let me tell you did a phenomenal job. The only concerned was that those who were on their own after the cruise should have been given a choice of going to Basel or Zurich with us instead of being left on the ship and transferred the next day. One more thing, when they say that everything included they mean everything!! We did not have to pay anything extra. I would definitely take another cruise on Scenic. It was not their fault that the river was low. For future travels maybe I would go in the spring!! Their care department will take care of any issues. They did go out of their way considering the problems to make it a fun cruise. Look what we have to talk about with our friends!! Read Less

I really tried to enjoy Marina she comes with a great reputation however overall I was disappointed. 1. The decor is very dated I know she was refurbished only a couple of years ago, but why make her look so dull, old fashioned and over-done? 2.The enrichment and shore information was non existent. No lectures, no on screen information just an overview in the daily news letter. Every day the local TA would be available on the ship - that's it. 3.We were hoping to dance while on the cruise but we found the band in the horizons lounge to have a repetitive repertoire with a thin sound. They also looked most of the time pretty disinterested. 4.The shuttle buses were a disaster in most ports. Long queues, long waits, lots of frustrated guests, us included. Lots of statements that the shuttle buses are provided by the local authorities and Oceania takes no responsibility. It seems to me that if Oceania advertise that their ship is visiting a locatation then they should make it their business to ensure their guests are able to get there. 5. In in room information services whilst providing next to no information about the ports spend a lot of time advertising (paid) services at the spa, the shops. 6. We went to a couple of the stage productions and they were really good. The dancing music and singing were terrific. Other nights we would walk in to see what was playing and walk out again disappointed. 7 The food was overall of a high standard in the buffet restaurant. The wines offered on the most part were very good also. 8. The coffee in Barista's is terrible.I wouldn't care so much but they make such a big deal about having proper baristas on board 9. Of the specialty restaurants we had one fabulous dinner at Red Ginger, and the second time it was average. The Polo Grill was nothing special, we had a great Italian meal In Toscano however Jacques was a real disappointment. Was that dry chicken breast with thickened mushroom sauce meant to be coq au vin? I question the (french) waiter and he agreed with me and then said: "what can I say, the chef is Canadian!" 10. The staff everywhere on this ship are terrific, friendly, nothing too much trouble 11. We wanted to see the Baltic and were not disappointed. We prefer the relaxed pace of river cruising, also because of the relative ease of getting into port, and the lack of sea days. This trip was as close to that as we could find on an ocean cruise. There was only one sea day, all other days being in port. The ports were great. We took only the Russian tours, which were essentially forced on us by Russia’s visa policies. We liked the food, and found that it wasn’t necessary to eat in the specialty restaurants as the same food was available elsewhere. We liked our fellow passengers, and their diverse backgrounds. There were only two, minor, complaints, one being a matter of taste. One is that the coffee on board was pretty awful, a common complaint by Australians and New Zealanders like us, no doubt. The barista in charge of the only espresso machine on board needs to visit Auckland or Melbourne to learn how to use it. We didn’t like quite a lot of the ship’s decor. In some public rooms it looked like an explosion in a self-conscious interior designer’s shop. Read Less

Poor points regarding the cruise (some of these will not apply to you, they did to us) Before the cruise Scenic did not communicate with us in regards to changing the ship,(we were originally on the Amber which is one year newer) our documents arrived late (this didn't really matter since you didn't need to have them to get on the ship) and the water was so low that we did not get to one of the ports (they seem to be okay with this it was just a quirk of the river level, however we had paid for insurance for just this reason and were not given a chance to back out and had called repeatedly to ask for updates) The cabin - see below Dining - as a vegetarian I was disappointed in the dinner food. The service was slow and the staff in the dining room was lacking in training. I am not sure with all the changes in itinerary was helpful. The food case at the bar never looked like the pictures. They had an evening meal for each of us in another section and it was called the Portofino restaurant -- the service and food there were excellent and the levet we had expected the entire cruise to be at Director -- He was great, but the constant changes were difficult to keep up with Shore excursions -- these were mainly overview of each area. The concert was lovely, however it had been moved and the dancers were on the main level with the seating so if you a few rows back it was difficult to see. We had an organ concert that was exceptional Public rooms -- these were very nice, however there was really no where in the evening for a group who would like to play cards, you couldn't use the dining room and often the entertainment was loud. All in all, having been on other river cruises I was not as impressed as I had hoped to be for the additional price. Read Less

I chose Scenic for our Rhine River Cruise based on web research (including this site) and other independent sites. Obviously Scenic is not as well known in the U.S. due to their lack of advertising. Every time we would mention that we were going on a River cruise folks would say, "On Viking?" Ah, the power of PBS advertising! I knew that with water levels low in Europe this summer the potential for an interrupted journey on the Rhine was a possibility--and, yes, that's exactly what happened. However. I give Scenic high marks for handling this in stride and my remembrances of this cruise will be about the wonderful experience, service and excursions rather than the slight trip disruption. Having never taken another river cruise I don't have a basis for comparison but I doubt that any other company could pull this off any better than Scenic. We disembarked Amsterdam on the Scenic Ruby (instead of the Jasper as advertised) and Scenic was very open that up river problems caused them to switch boats. No problem, the Ruby was an excellent vessel that was refurbished not too long ago. Great crew (excellent butlers), great food and entertainment and top notch cruise director. Shortly before we reached Koblenz we were informed that the trip would be interrupted so we had to repack. After our morning excursion to Cochem (outstanding) and lunch (o the Ruby) Scenic put us on a commercial sightseeing boat to go through the Rhine Gorge for three hours (i.e., not bussed but still cruising) and then coaches for the last 40-50 km meeting our new ship (Crystal) at Rudesheim. When we arrived in our new cabin all our luggage (including carry ons) was waiting. The cruise continued as normal, albeit with a different ship which was virtually the same as the Ruby although the Crystal was several years newer. Never crew but same great service, food and entertainment and our Cruise Director (Kathy) stayed with us which really helped the continuity of the cruise. I would recommend Scenic and take the exact same cruise EVEN IF I knew there was going to be a water level disruption. The Scenic people are pros and this was a first class cruise. Scenic made a big deal about how we continued cruising despite the interruption whereas other cruises required passengers to finish much of the tour by coaches. I don't know how true that is, but I will remember this wonderful cruise experience, not the slight trip interruption. Kudos to Scenic. Read Less

We sailed on a “Scenic Luxury Rhine Highlights River Tour from Amsterdam to Basel in late September. We are seasoned cruisers and this was our second Scenic River Cruise in three years (Danube in September 2015). We also have enjoyed Mediterranean and Caribbean cruises. Our experience with Scenic on the Danube in 2015 was indeed 5 star. Our experience this past month on the Rhine was the polar opposite. What a disappointment it was. We were told two days before the cruise that we would be on the Ruby, not the Jasper. The Ruby is 6 years older than the Jasper. We later learned that the Jasper had been on the Danube all summer but no passengers were informed of this. We stayed at Scenic’s designated Doubletree Hotel in Amsterdam the night before embarkation, and learned that the 10th floor was the designated floor for Scenic travellers. The rooms were bare bones to say the least. Two days into our time on Scenic Ruby, the Cruise Director informed us that ‘she just learned’ that we would have to be transferred to another ship (Scenic Crystal) because of low water levels. We felt like we weren’t treated like intelligent adults, as we now knew that this had happened to every Scenic ship for the entire summer. This deception did not sit well with us. We will not focus on the effects of the water levels, as we had the same problems in 2015. We will say, however, that the low water levels definitely impacted the quality time we could have spent on the ship (one ship change, two technical stops). The focus of this review is the significant deterioration in service, amount and quality of food and drinks. The following quotes from Scenic’s website marketing material were definitely not our experience: "Diverse and delicious food experiences…; ...a gastronomic masterpiece dining experience on our ships…; ...onboard luxury of one of our boutique 5-star state-of-the-art Space-Ships…; …extensive selection of complementary beverages all day…” FOOD: We dined in the upscale Portobello restaurant one night and it was excellent. Breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Crystal Dining room was far from a 'diverse, delicious, and gastronomic masterpiece’. This was a huge step down from our 2015 experience, which included meal themes according to where we sailed, an abundance of food, and delicious variations (not to mention far superior entertainment on board). The breakfast and lunch buffets in 2018 offered the same items every day with maybe 2 items changed per day to represent regional fare. Long lineups occurred for the hot specialty items as they ran out of food quickly and despite staff saying more would be ‘coming in 5 minutes’ - this rarely happened. There was simply not enough food for the amount of people to feed. Dinner didn’t offer a lot of choice, and portions were generally small, overcooked and underwhelming. For example, the much anticipated Surf-and-turf night consisted of a thin, tough piece of beef with a silver dollar size medallion of tough-as-leather Gulf Coast lobster tail (not a full tail, but merely a cross-section). BEVERAGES: Scenic cruises are marketed as 5 star, all inclusive with complementary beverages all day, every day. Our experience in 2015 was wonderful, with several varieties of quality wines to choose from; there was a table display of 4 types of red and white wines outside the dining room for guests to preview. This year, there was no display at all on the Scenic Ruby, and a very small one on the Crystal. Each night at dinner the same two (German and Italian) low quality red and white wines were offered. It was abundantly clear that staff were instructed to pour small portions. The staff did the best they could but were clearly understaffed and it seemed to be an imposition when we requested anything other than wine at dinner. Coffee was never offered following dinner as it was on our 2015 cruise; we had to ask for it. OVERALL: In summary, the predominant observation was that Scenic has cut back significantly on food, food quality, food selection, and staffing. We suspect management has implemented cost cutting measures as reflected in the decline in on board passenger experience. Our butler introduced herself the first day and from then on was consumed with taking on several other roles. Ship staff were clearly overworked and this was evident in their demeanor. In contrast, the staff in 2015 were friendly, interactive and appeared less stressed. Entertainment and excursions were below expectations as well. We so enjoyed the group of Bavarian slap dancers in 2015 that came on to the ship, whereas on the 2018 cruise there was only a pianist and violinist on board to entertain. While our 2015 Scenic experience was 5 star, our 2018 experience was a 2.5 star despite paying a 5 star price. We will not recommend Scenic nor will we ever cruise with this company again. A huge disappointment. Read Less

We took a scenic cruise from Basel to Amsterdam in September for our 40th wedding anniversary. It was wonderful to see so many beautiful places, and the tour guides were awesome. Due to low water levels we had to change ships on our second day, but the staff did their best to facilitate the transition. We were also given a credit for the day we had to use buses, which we appreciated. I thought that the food was good, portions were adequate, many different choices. The service was top notch in every way. Our cruise director was very well organized and kept her cool while dealing with the low river levels. I felt the cabin on the Ruby was adequate but smaller than the Jade, and the bathroom was not quite as updated. Also, the first balcony on the Jade had a permanent structure which was good for privacy, and on the Ruby, the balcony was separated by a thin partition. We did not use it much. That would probably be my only complaint. Thank you for a memorable trip. Read Less
