The cruise couldn't have been better. I have told every one I know they must experience a Viking River cruise at least once in their lifetime. We began our Cruise in Amsterdam and I couldn't sleep all night because of the excitement. There wasn't a single detail that was missed, everything was perfect from a to z. The crew was top notch in every aspect of the of the cruise. Some of the crew were a little bit above above outstanding; our program director (George) never missed a beat; our housekeeping person (Andwar) was above and beyond in every respect; and our waiter for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (Norman) was over the top!! I really can't say enough good things regarding the crew (never heard a single complaint form the crew they seem to love what they are doing)! The ship was exceptional ... clean, organized, and comfortable (almost like being at home). I enjoyed the comforts of our room; it was nice to be able to go outside on the veranda and catch a breath of fresh air and take photos. The venues and tours were outstanding; the port of calls were well chosen and interesting. I especially the evening entertainment including the local artists that performed. Embarkation and Disembarkation went extremely smooth and to have luggage delivered to our room was a nice touch. The trip was so exceptional we have already booked another river cruise for next year and we are expecting hat our cruise will be the same if not better than this year. See you on the river next year and thank you for the experience this year!! Read Less

This was our first cruise with Viking, and our first trip overseas. Our trip was incredible. The crew was personable, very approachable, and eager to assist in any way they could, went the "extra mile" to accommodate passengers and seemed to enjoy themselves. The ship was wonderful... very comfortable, all the amenities we needed or wanted both in and out of our quarters, dining exceeded our expectations. Entertainment on the ship was okay, but not enticing enough to stay (for us). Information brochure sent previous to the trip did not arrive until a couple of days prior to our departure. This would have been helpful to have weeks in advance. We ended up reading the material on the overseas flight. We, did, however, appreciate the information on the website, as it gave us an overview of what to expect on tours. We researched each port to decide what we, personally, wanted to explore, and with the well planned free time allowed for us, were able to search out sites beyond what was on the organized tours. Extremely appreciated the free time opportunities for personal explorations. The organized shore excursions were well planned, and most of the local guides were very informed. The "quiet boxes" enabled us to always be informed as we toured. Very appreciative of that. Groups were a good size, certainly wouldn't want them any larger. Coordination with other tours in one cathedral would have been helpful, as our groups intertwined at one point, receiving on our quiet boxes from other groups, rather than ours, and difficult to find our group. It became so crowded, we couldn't even see the inside of the cathedral.(This was the Strasbourg Cathedral.) We feel we had an excellent experience, far exceeding our expectations! Met some wonderful people, continuing to stay in touch. We are looking forward to another Viking tour in the near future. Read Less

We loved our Rhine cruise so much that we are going on a cruise of the Seine in 2016 (and I am already trying to talk my husband into yet another one in 2017). The food was great, the captain and the crew were all very nice and very helpful, and we enjoyed all of the excursions, especially the winery in the Alsace region of France. My husband's favorite excursion was the pub crawl in Cologne, with the terrific guide named Udo. He was also our guide in Cologne and we thought he was the best guide of the entire trip. My husband loved the German sweet mustard (which was served with some appetizers one evening) so much that now he orders it from Amazon because we can't find it in any of our local stores. One day when we were sitting on the top deck and the weather was really cold, we were about to head downstairs when crew members suddenly arrived with hot chocolate for everyone - so we stayed! Everything went very smoothly, from the time we were picked up in Amsterdam to the time we were taken to the Basel airport for our flight back home. This trip was a great way to get an overview of places we had never been before and would like to return to in the future. Read Less

My husband and I were somewhat apprehensive of a river cruise with a view to the confinement onboard a small ship and my first thoughts were "what are we going to do whilst sailing - will it be boring. However we spent a lovely week on board the Ama Sonata, the food at all meals was delicious as was the wine at meal times and although it was classed as House wine it was the best House Wine I have ever drank. The hours and days just seem to drift by. We met some lovely people and hopefully we will stay in touch The staff in the restaurant could not do enough for you in particular Francis who served our table most of the time. The cabin was comfortable and well designed utilizing every space. The bed was also very comfortable. Wi FI in your cabin was a bonus allowing you to keep in touch with family. The excursions were well organized and although you were asked to make your choices at the beginning of the cruise you could easily change on the day. there was entertainment on a few evenings and also a resident pianist who played music relating to the Era of the passengers. We particularly enjoyed Cologne and the guide Marcus was excellent so entertaining and added a bit of humour to the tour. Bob and Jess Hefford Read Less

I'm not a review writer, and this is my first but I feel compelled to do so to share our Scenic experience. As part of a wider European vacation we booked a 14 days Gems of Europe river cruise with Scenic with Prague extension. As it was a joint 60th birthday year holiday, we splashed out on a Royal Suite (cabin 315 for those who are interested). We spent a few days in Amsterdam under our own steam and just happened to stay at the same hotel Scenic used for their pre-cruise extension and departure day room. Hilton Doubletree. This was handy because on checkout we just took our luggage down to the Scenic day room and they took care of everything else in preparation for a 3.00pm boarding. However, we were supposed to join the ship at Amsterdam but due to an issue with a lock the Diamond was stuck in Antwerp. Scenic sorted this by arranging coach transfer to Antwerp. No problem with this, we got to see a bit of Belgium on the short coach ride. The lock issue was solved and the ship sailed overnight to Amsterdam. On arrival at the ship in Antwerp we were greeted with champagne made to feel welcome and then were taken to our cabin, which was beautiful and well worth the additional expense to have the extra room and lounge area. There was plenty of hanging and drawer space in the wardrobe so most of the contents of the bags were unpacked. The suitcases slide under the bed out of the way. To cut a long story short the next two weeks was great. There were no issues. We didn't ask much of anybody but when a request was made for something it just happened. The food was fabulous the whole way. Plenty of alcohol all day if you wanted it. We found eating a light meal in the River Café upstairs at lunch was better option than the buffet in the main dining room. There is only so much you can eat in a day. The staff were all wonderful. From the Cruise Director Gary right down to our cabin attendant Mariya, everybody on board was great. One thing that impressed us was our departure from the hotel in Prague to Prague airport. This was the end of our tour with Scenic and our cabin class came with private car transfer to the airport. The limo driver claimed the luggage wouldn't fit in the boot of the S class Mercedes, so the local Scenic representative arranged for a taxi with more room for the bags. What happened next surprised and impressed us. We were happy to get in the taxi but Scenic insisted we get driven to the airport in the limo with the bags following in the taxi. That action speaks for itself in how Scenic treat their paying customers and fulfil their obligations. We are already thinking of a cruise through Southern France in two years time. It will only be with Scenic. Read Less

We have cruised with the best Cruise Ships and have most likely 100 cruises between all of us and we ALL LOVED the River Cruise on the Eistla. It was a first for all of us. The service, the food, the scenery. We loved it so much and talked about the advantage of the smaller ships compare to the masses of the big ships that all 6 of us booked again for August 2016 to cruise from Munich to Budapest. One of my sisters and her husband lives in Germany and they joined us in Frankfurt and we flew together to Amsterdam. The cabins where a little small but we spend very little time in them and so it was fine. We all had a fantastic time and enjoyed all the excursions also. Looking forward to our next one. Read Less

Sailing on the new ship AmaSerena was a delight. *Activities are well planned and various for all choices, also optional tours were available. *Service was excellent, Christian's team was always ready to assist. *Travel to embarkation port was a little confusing at the Amsterdam airport, but we did locate the Am waterways' staff and we were transported by coach, (Lufthansa on the other hand did not get our luggage at the ship for 3 days) the cruise manager Dejan Stanjik took on the task of getting our luggage back and a good thing he did, we are very grateful !! *Our state room was very beautiful with the twin balconies that we enjoyed, large bed, internet and mini fridge, good seize wardrobe and bathroom. As special thanks the service from our maids was very attentive and much appreciated. *Meals, from breakfast were you could order if you needed to but the buffet was plenty, lunch and dinner were excellent and the various choices made it easy to take on a few pounds (few only). The team of waiters with Daniel, Carmen, Elvis, Szifco who were there every morning, lunch and dinner for our table made our meals lots of fun, at the Capitan's table Constantine and his team along with Chef David made the experience very enjoyable. *Since I cannot compare other cruise companies, I would definitely recommend Amawater Ways on all levels. My wife and I had fabulous time. Many of the guest onboard were commenting that this was the best they had experienced. Read Less

We travelled May 3/2015 from Amsterdam to Basel. We have travelled the large cruise lines in past, but wanted to experience what a River Cruise would be like. Because we were traveling from Canada we decided to land in Amsterdam on the Friday before we would set sail Sunday. This was good decision to help with jet lag & also to get a good taste of Amsterdam. When we arrived at the airport Viking reps met us & we said that we weren't sailing for a few days but they helped guide us to the train & were more than helpful. Our hotel Movenpick seemed to be a hub for Viking for many different ships & we were able to get information as our embarking port had changed (everyone so helpful). When we arrived on board we were greeted by many Viking Crew members, one who walked us to our rooms ( Demeter also our favourite bartender)& our luggage followed in minutes. Our room was on the first floor (125)and it was very compact. We spent very little time there. Meals were good and our excursions were interesting. We purchased extra excursions which we felt were good value. The water levels were high as there was rain in Switzerland for over a week. This caused some disruption but for us, it was all part of the adventure. We were bussed to our excursions & once ate in Strasbourg instead of going back to the ship because of timelines. Viking took care of all of this. All hands on deck when we came back on board, stewards, hotel manager, & even the captain greeted us. They were appreciative of our understanding as itinerary changed, and we could feel it. It was a wonderful journey. Boyon was our cruise director & he was AMAZING. He & the hotel manager kept us up to date on any changes. Our consierge was also very helpful.I would highly recommend Viking & would travel again. Three couples travelled together & had a great adventure. Read Less

The crew on our ship - the Magni were outstanding! They liked what they did and it showed. We so enjoyed their high energy level and how much fun they were to be with all the time. As we cruised, ultimately through 67 sets of locks, we gazed at castles, churches and gorgeous scenery and enjoyed our meals that matched the region we were in with regional dishes and drink. We were entertained nightly with activities, toured many cities during the day, had demonstrations and educational lectures. Yes! - we will be back traveling yet another river with Viking! Read Less

We cruise a lot and have tried just about all the major lines. We find the celebrity aqua class fits what we like. We like the Persian garden relaxation room and the Blu restaurant. For that reason we find the buffets (on all ships) to be chaotic and do not enjoy the search for somewhere to sit. All though the way the different food stations are set up is a much better plan than 2 long buffet lines on most ships. Embarkation was easy and fast. we booked transfers from airport to ship, for convenience, but (like every transfer we've experienced) you end up waiting so they have a 40 person bus load, this time our wait was about an hour. Leaving the ship they take care of getting your luggage from your room to the airport. But... when we got to the airport everybody's luggage was stacked outside the one terminal where everyone was dropped off. My husband was trying to help the elder people get their bags as there was no help, it was a huge piled up mess. Any one could have come and taken any bags they wanted. Plus lucky for us this happened to be the terminal we were flying out of, other people had to haul all the their luggage around, which is no easy task at the Amsterdam airport. This cruise itinerary was fabulous, loved every port. As a rule we do not do ship tours, we did our own thing and booked our St Petersburg excursion on line before we left. This ship is set up with lots of tucked away sitting areas, and with the older frequent cruisers on board we never seemed to notice we were on board with 2500 other passengers. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and it was way beyond our expectations! Our room had plenty of storage, french balcony and was kept spotless by the housekeeping staff. The best part of this cruise was the food. My husband is a Celiac and the cooks went out of their way to make gluten-free dinners for him. He had a different kind of bread each day, and they could turn any item on the menu to gluten-free without loosing the sauce or flavor. He even ordered double dinners! Because of the spring high waters, we could not dock in one port, but Avalon gave us free excursions and bussed us in luxury buses. The staff went out of their way to give us and exceptional vacation!! Bath was spacious and good water pressure. Beds were so comfortable! Can't say enough about the crew. Very attentive and enthusiastic. This was our third Viking cruise. The itinerary for Tulips and Windmills was not as interesting as the previous two cruises (Romantic Danube and Portraits of Southern France). Nevertheless, the Bestla crew did their best to make this a perfectly enjoyable experience. The standard tours were all excellent (don't miss the tulips at Keukenhof Gardens), but we passed on the optional tours to explore on our own or sit on the sun deck with a glass of wine. This cruise begins and ends in Amsterdam. A city tour and canal cruise are included. Many other attractions can be reached via a short walk or a taxi. However, the city is quite busy - crowded and congested. No problem! At our request, our concierge, Nina, scheduled a private tour for our party of six at the Rijksmuseum (rated the #1 attraction in Amsterdam by Trip Advisor). We skipped the long line, as our guide took us directly into the museum for a wonderful tour (at reasonable cost). Thanks, Nina! Thanks also to our program director, Carla, our cruise director, Chris, and many others too numerous to mention. The positive attitude onboard starts with the captain, who was at the door each day to send us off on our tours. I would definitely cruise on the Viking Bestla again. Read Less

The Bestla was cheerful, organized, and tasteful. Our cabin was comfortable and had everything we needed and we never saw the house staff, we had one TV problem and had a repair engineer in within 10minites and fix our problem quicker than that. The daily outing were informative and interesting, just long enough, and the group leaders and size of group were just right. The food was all wonderful, a large variety, just right proportions, the servers were great, the times served were perfect and the cooking demonstration and kitchen tour were appreciated. Every meal was more than I expected and the house wine and beer were all enjoyed. The lounge for cocktails, evening entertainment, meeting people was a large area and comfortable. The house staff were everywhere and the little extra's were the best, not having to carry your passports, the water and umbrellas ready for your use every days, the warm reception at evening meals by officers, the availability of water, cookies, coffee anytime was like it was your home. The general smiles and hello's were seemed to come so naturally to staff. It was a comfortable atmosphere especially with dress, fellow travelers, staff, finding locations, and no loud speakers making announcements generally a quiet soothing atmosphere. We had very little thinking to do it was just done for you and in a nice way. It was our first and I have told friends and hope to do more River Cruising again, I have only ocean cruising to compare it to or land trips but I couldn't find one thing that needed to change. It was perfect. Some say "it is better to be lucky than good" -- in our case, that is so true. We arrived at the very height of tulip season and the flowers were at their peak for the entire 10 days of our cruise. The staff of the Viking Skadi was one of the best! They were friendly & accomodating and couldn't have been any better at making our first cruise one to remember forever. Our fellow cruisers said that the Skadi had the best crew they have ever cruised with and many of them were on their 7th or 8th cruise. A great example was when we were asked what "our song" was and although he had never heard it -- our entertainment director, found it and learned it. On our last night, while my husband & I were dancing, he played it without being prompted -- he had taken the time to get to know us personally! Viking you get it! and you get it right! It was our first trip on a river cruise and by far exceeded our expectations. All the staff were magnificent, friendly and very helpful. The organisation was great, we had all pertinent information sent to us beforehand that covered every question I wanted to ask. The excursions were beautifully arranged and you had a choice of difficulty, so usually I went on a different one to my daughter! They had these amazing voice receivers that we wore, so no matter how far away from the guide, you could plainly hear what they were saying. You could choose from a variety of excursions for all tastes, or just explore on your own, or just enjoy relaxing onboard. The ship was spacious, it never seemed crowded. The cabins were all beautiful, plenty of space and all had a view. We had a balcony which was lovely to sit out on in the evening. It was heavenly waking up to the sound of ducks and lambs walking along the river bank, or seeing 10 - 20 swans greet you. The service was excellent and always happy and friendly, the wait staff, kitchen chefs, cabin staff, excursion director, bar staff and front desk were all efficient and polite. There was always some form of fun entertainment in the evenings and/or afternoons in the beautiful lounge/bar, quite often brought in from whatever place we were moored. Or you could go up to the top deck and snooze in the sun, or play mini golf or quoits, or just walk a few laps round the deck. The ages were a good range, though mostly over about 40 I should say. I wouldn't recommend it for children under 11. I am saving up to go on another one run by Viking! Read Less

My Daughter and I decided to go on a river cruise, as I don't like sea cruises! As it was our first river cruise we wasn't sure what to expect, but from the information pack we each received prior to the trip, to the ease of getting to the airport at the end, the whole cruise was a much greater experience than we anticipated. Everything was covered, information was easy to follow, the staff were incredible, funny, over-the-top helpful and hardworking. The ship Kvasir was beautiful, graceful, quiet and clean. The Cabin was very well designed and seemed large, especially with the lovely balcony. It had everything we needed, wifi, shower, tv and wonderful support from our cabin staff. The entertainment often reflected the area we were passing through, how to make a particular liqueur coffee, guest singers and entertainers. There was always something on to watch or listen to. We had a great pianist who was always playing in the lounge, A nice bar and comfortable seats and was never crowded. There was a little coffee, tea and snack place open 24 hrs. The food and the waiters were both top notch and it was fun to make new friends. The upper deck was great for relaxing in the sun, or running (not me!) round the track or playing games. All the time there was wonderful scenery and fantastic tours. Beautiful cathedrals, churches, markets and cafes and always very informed guides. I particularly liked the voice boxes we were given so we could hear the guide without having to be right next to him, or gathered in a circle! I was so impressed I am going on another one this year! This was our first Viking River Cruise and we depending strongly on reviews to choose our trip. In the course of our week long cruise we found that most of the other passengers had taken a previous river cruise with Viking. We found that we'd have to agree with their confidence. The first point to mention is that most of the Viking Long Ships are very new. The ship we sailed on, the Viking Baldur, was about a year and half old. The accommodations are functional and nice, if not overly large. There is a lot of attention to comfort and small touches to making time in the room pleasant. Don't expect to spend a lot of time in the room. The food was plentiful and nicely done. The service staff was so good that it added to the enjoyment of our meals and I cannot say enough in praising all of the staff in helping to make our trip better. We arranged a private side trip that deviated from the cruise schedule and the concierge did a very good job in helping us plan the side trip. The activities were very good with only a couple of minor suggestions for improvement. We were on the Legends of the Rhine cruise. The second day featured a trip to a World War II museum in Overloon, The Netherlands. If you are a war buff you might find it enjoyable, but I think the general reaction was that there was probably a better way to spend the time. The other minor suggestion is that on an excursion to Remagen, which was new on the tour, we arrived in time to visit a historic church, but the tour guide made that the end of the tour in that city. That meant the church had closed. It would have been easy to begin at the church since the bus was parked a block away. The tour guides were knowledgeable and there was often free time to explore on our own. I might have enjoyed extra time in some of the cities we visited, particularly Cochem and Heidelberg, but the tour company cannot anticipate differences in what all their customers will find most interesting. It should be noted that we began in Amsterdam and finished our cruise in Frankfurt. People making the cruise the following week did the trip in reverse, beginning in Frankfurt. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we had no previous experiece to use as a criterion for this one. We chose Viking instead of one of its competitors because of its reputation as the most expensive cruise line, and the best. The ship was a real surprise for several reasons. Our stateroom was one of the aft cabins and we had misgivings about the engine noise before we ever did any cruising. Those new engines were virtually silent and we never heard them or felt them. The ship itself was very easy to get around and conveniently designed for its passengers, but the best part of our experience was the ship's crew. They were superb in every area. They were always pleasant and warm from the lowest member of the crew we encountered to the Captain himself. It was interesting to see how engaged he was in the sailing process and we saw him frequently out an among the passengers and crew. Of particular note was Jens, our Hotel Manager. He was fabulous. Always available to both the crew and passengers, always smiling, alway responsive to everybody. If I owned a cruise line I would immediately make him the commodore because he was perfect in every way. Above all else, the food services were remarkably good and equal to the best hotels we have ever stayed anywhere in the world. The food was delicious, beautifully presented at every meal, fresh and delicious, generously served and plated perfectly. The waiters, waitresses and bar personnel were friendly, efficient, and very well-trained, without exception. We never received an inferior meal or service that was less than perfect. We have told everyone we know that "A Viking cruise is the only way to go," and all of our future cruising will be with Viking's superb fleet and excellent crews. Thanks to all of you. Read Less

Our 30thieth anniversary needed to be something special and the advertisements for Viking Cruises looked as if a river cruise would fit the bill. Booking was easy and talking with Walter and making the arrangements was an indication that this trip would be well planned and flawless. It was. We started with 2 days in Bruges before boarding the Baldur in Amsterdam. Everything was taken care of from our arrival at the airport in Brussells to checking into our hotel. The tours were interesting and informative and we didn't think things could get better. When we boarded the longboat in Amsterdam our expectations were exceeded. The stateroom was roomy and comfortable and the lounge and other public rooms were beautiful and inviting. The food was incredible and the wine was so good I was glad it kept flowing at dinner. Our tours at the stops along the Rhine were conducted by tour guides who knew their history as well as exciting stories to tell at each turn. We enjoyed the company of many different people on board at meals and evening activities. The saddest part was realizing that the trip was ending. Everyone on board had done their utmost to make us comfortable and feel pampered and the staffs attention to detail was evident. It was a trip well worth the money and the perfect memory for our 30 years together! Read Less

This Viking cruise was a new and exciting travel experience, our first time in Europe and also our first river cruise. Our ship was on its maiden voyage and we couldn't get over the many amenities it offered. The food was beyond fabulous - every meal was eagerly anticipated. The whole crew made us feel like family and our tour guides gave us a thorough, flawless side-trip at each port. Viking also was there for us on our extension destination with transportation and concierge service. We loved the trip. Read Less
